Before.

Kathie crept down the dark Oxford streets. She was alone in this task. Her friends had laughed at her, saying the biscuit wasn't worth the risk. It was cold and she could see her breath in front of her as she walked carefully on the icy streets.

The idea was borne out of one of those silly late night discussions. They had laughed at the situation. Said how ridiculous it was, especially here in Oxford. They all agreed that someone ought to do something. Then Kathie spoke up and said she would, now and they all laughed and tried to talk her out of it. Not worth the risk of being caught. Just a joke really. They didn't even take her seriously.

She had a small can of black paint in her hands and a paintbrush. As she walked through the city, being careful not to be seen she left evidence of her night time prowling behind her. None of her friends would have to question if she really did carry out her threat, the evidence would be there in black and white for all to see.

It was the posters and placards that were receiving her attention. All the mis-spelled words and incorrect apostrophes. She went through the city like an avenging grammar angel.
“And I'm not even a language student” was her final thought.

My mother does that... When the road to her village was shut, there was a local diversion, but other traffic started using it, so the owner of the field put up a big sign saying "No HGV's" which infuriated my mother so much she jumped out of my car and rubbed it out!

I'd be there too and have been known to correct grafitti in public loos! (Like Niles Crane at Cafe Nervosa). I once, driven by insane rage, pointed out to a shopkeeper that PENCIL usually has a C, not an S as he had it. He was very, very snotty so I retired clutching the shreds of my dignity.

After

"Thank you for your efforts, and don't worry. Tomorrow will be great. We often have a bad dress rehearsal and the Christmas Play is always a huge success." Kathie Ferrars dismissed the cast with a sigh of relief, and went up onto the stage to pull the curtains across, ready for the next day. As she reached out for the cords, the door to the hall opened again and someone came in.

"Hi Kathie. How did it go?" asked Nancy Wilmot, Headmistress of the Chalet School since the retirement of Hilda Annersley at the end of the previous term.

"About what you'd expect. The chorus was all over the place, so many folk forgot their words that I lost count. And to cap it all, 'Mary' dropped 'Jesus' in the final tableau!"

Nancy laughed, and ran lightly up the steps onto the stage. "A typical dress rehearsal then. Are you done here? I can run you back to the school and we can have Kaffee und Kuchen in my sitting room. You look as if you need a break."

"I do rather. Thanks Nancy." Kathie pulled the curtains closed, shutting them in on the stage. She was just parting the curtains to step through when there was a sudden cracking sound, followed immediately by a loud crash. Kathie jumped and turned around to see one of the scenery flying bars, complete with cloth, had somehow fallen to the stage floor. Peeping from under the folds of cloth were Nancy's feet.

Kathie flew to get help, but the place was deserted. The girls had gone back in the coaches, and only Nancy's little car stood outside the door. Luckily the building had the phone connected in the front office, and Kathy rang for Gaudenz and anyone else he could find to help. It took time for them to arrive, and she knew that time was something that Nancy may not have got.

By the time Gaudenz and his helpers arrived at the hall 30 minutes had passed. Jack Maynard was already there, waiting to get at his patient. They ran onto the stage and lifted the heavy bar off the body lying to still on the stage. Jack knelt down and felt for a pulse, then slowly rose to his feet, shaking his head.

"We're too late," he said heavily. "I suspect we were too late from the time it fell. I'm sorry Kathie, I know that you and Nancy were close."

He came and put his arm around the sobbing Kathie and led her away, while Gaudenz supervised the lifting of the body onto a stretcher to take to the San. Once back at the school Jack insisted on Kathie having a hot cup of coffee, into which he put a little dose, ensuring a good night's sleep. As Deputy Head she would have to be fit enough to take up the reins the following day. The Christmas Play would naturally be cancelled.

The next day a subdued-looking Kathie walked into the Head's study and settled down behind the desk with a hot cup of coffee. Behind the serious demeanour was a good deal of satisfaction. She had the post she had coveted, and no one suspected a thing.

I didn't see that one coming.

Our local garden centre had a sign saying "shed's gates". I always assumed the gates were neither made by nor belonged to the sheds .....

And here was I thinking it was a genuine accident! Is there anyone at the Chalet School who hasn't done something illegal, apart from the bodies littering the place up?

During

In the privacy of her own room at the Chalet School Kathie Ferrars removed her skirt and started at the mess down the front – it was just too bad – she thought rebelliously. That dog had managed to slobber all over a perfectly decent skirt – one that was now going to require dry-cleaning the next time she went to Interlaken. She could have done without that additional expense, the salary for a junior Mistress was not so high that the exorbitant cost of cleaning could be done without some sacrifice. She changed into another skirt and attempted, without success, to brush the slobber from the soiled one. She sighed, she loved it here, this was only her second term and she really loved her job, her form, her colleagues, the senior mistresses and Head, everyone. She also got alone very well with Joey Maynard who lived next door and was always there when someone needed a sympathetic ear or a friendly face,

'Joey just seems to have blinkered vision when it comes to that dog though,' she thought to herself, 'I mean He's a lovely animal and I really do adore dogs, especially large dogs – but he's had next to no training, And Joey's no help – seems to think it just hysterically funny whenever her dog bowls one of us over – she wouldn't like it if it happened to her...' she stopped as a rather wicked idea suddenly presented itself.

That night, just after midnight, a black-clad figure crept along the path from the Chalet School to Freudesheim and through the gate cut into the bushes. Through the gardens that used to be a cabbage patch and into the kitchen using the spare key left under a flowerpot for just such an occasion. Once inside the figure removed some items from her pocket and crept upstairs and along to the main bedroom. Working silently she managed to get in and out of the main bedroom without waking either of the two sleeping inhabitants. She then left and returned to the Chalet School as silently as ever.

It was not until mid-morning that she discovered that her plan had worked. Nancy Wilmot had been across to Joey's for a coffee as she had a free lesson but returned early and almost breathless with giggles,

“What on Earth's the matter?” Kathie demanded, Nancy made an heroic effort and stopped laughing, though she still had tears running down her cheeks,

“I've just been across to Joey's,” she began, “to discover Joey flat on her back with Bruno sat on top of her. It took Anna, Joan and me twenty minutes to drag him off of her.”

“What happened?” this from Biddy O'Ryan.

“Joey had no idea,” Nancy replied, “she'd been stuck under him for almost thirty minutes – I mean right under him, Bruno had sat on her face! You've never seen such a sorry specimen, her clothes were ruined – one of her best twin sets too, and her face was so red I thought she would burst. No idea why Bruno would suddenly so something like that but Joey insists he's going to obedience classes tomorrow.”

Kathie smiled, it was a good thing no one had discovered the aniseed she had sewn into Joey clothes – now, hopefully, she wouldn't have any more skirts ruined.

I think I might try that last trick with my father's dog, which is a similarly hefty and ill-mannered mutt. I always think of him when Bruno/Rufus flattens someone.

Brilliant, though scurrilous(!) stories, all of you Advent Drabblers; thanks so much for all your efforts.

Goodness, I didn't know anise attracted dogs!

Kathie's apostrophe efforts reminded me of this drabble by Alex et al. (and also including my it's/its poem). :D

Thank you, ADs.
