I hate "reaching out"!

It's particularly annoying if you're making a complaint!!

New verb heard on BBC news. Young woman commenting on new quarantine rules on returning from Spain, “my life is upheavelling “. I quite like it!

The appeals system for A-level results is going to be "operationalised".

Anyone who uses the word "operationalise" has got no business being in charge of school exams!

Ah...so the appeals system is going to be started, operated, applied, implemented...or any one of several real words...

Think this is a malapropism worthy of note! During a discussion of whom should be tested for COVID, one participant emphasised the need for those with no symptoms to be tested in case they were carriers, « these asymmetric people really need to be tested ». Have visions of those people with slightly one leg longer than the other being herded in line for testing! Or those, like me, with one shoulder higher than the other!

A certain edge when she spoke of Mrs Maynard, certainly, but, after all, not everyone could love Joey.

It's particularly annoying when it's a complaint. "Thank you for reaching out to us," when you've contacted them to say that your parcel never arrived!

Gifting is one of those that's actually quite old - 16th century - but it always feels a bit contrived to me in modern English.

The use of "gifting" seems to me to be an advertising ploy. No longer can you give someone a present that is personal and something they want or would like. Now you have to give a "gift" and advertisers are very clear that "gifts" for "gifting occasions" come from "gift ranges".

I've mentioned before that I do online surveys and you do get surveys about "gifting occasions" where it's clearly beyond the comprehension of the setter that people buy and want to buy presents outwith "gift ranges".

I hate "gifts" because they seem designed to be most impressive at the point of opening, to make someone say "oooo, that's nice", rather than be of any use apart from that moment. Give me a book, give me a DVD, proper stuff, not some bow-wrapped nothing.
