It made me laugh, anyway - always a good start to the day. Thanks, bythebrook!

I would say "jewlry" and "febry" ARE the "correct" pronunciations and they have changed simply because more people learnt to read and, therefore , started pronouncing words as they were spelt rather than the way they were traditionally said.

But the poem about the little girl doesn't make any sense if you say "Fore-head" instead of "forrid"

I've just seen the following post on a local community website.

"I am after some recommendations for a local tradesman or a company who could put up some wire mesh around our solar panels on the roof to stop birds nesting under there at an affordable price."

I'm sorely tempted to reply and suggest it would be a lot easier just to increase the rent!

The word driving me crazy at the moment is accidently - found now in many novels and newspapers. Grr!

I know that hashtag posts don't work with apostrophes, but I think Amazon might wish to reconsider advertising the new series of "The Grand Tour" as "#amazonshitcarshow" .

Yes, rather unfortunate - but maybe accurate?

Meanwhile, in GO fiction mode, I was amused to read the flap on a box of tea-bags 'Tear back and tuck in' - they'd be a bit chewy, though, wouldn't they?

A Sky News reporter commented this morning that the government's economic plans might need to be "re-looked at". Is there something wrong with the word "again"? "Re-looked at"?!

Yes, I hate "publically" too - but it's actually in the OED (which meant that I couldn't do a global correction in the book I was copyediting  ):

publically, adv.

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: public adj., -ally suffix.
Etymology: < public adj. + -ally suffix. Compare earlier publicly adv., and also earlier publical adj.

= publicly adv.
1797 in Catal. Prints: Polit. & Personal Satires (Brit. Mus.) (1942) VII. 328 I do not Consider myself accountable for them after thus publically Warning every Person.
1854 E. G. Squier Honduras & Guatemala 13 That the Government of Honduras has purchased arms in the United States, which were regularly and publically shipped, is no doubt true.
1940 W. C. Reckless Criminal Behavior xiv. 271 Punishment is being exacted visibly or publically in the spirit of appeasing the community.
1972 D. Holbrook Pseudo-revol. viii. 140 Individuals leaping on to the stages of Danish sex clubs and publically copulating.
1998 Daily Tel. 13 Aug. 23/3 That is the target for which we are publically accountable.

Syntax!! I am looking for some books on the history of New England. I was directed to "The 10 Best Books About Early Colonial History of 2019".

Then I looked on Amazon for a copy of one of the books mentioned, and the seller had helpfully commented that the book was "a bit warped" .

A student emailed me to ask when the curse ends.

The witch in me wants to make an appropriate response.

The teacher in me wants to send him a lesson rather than a response.

Mostly I just giggle...

The pub I was at last night, according to large gold lettering in the snug, sells beer, wine and spirts.

I did not have any spirts.

Today's local paper includes an interview with an "ancestor" of one of the victims of the Peterloo Massacre.

They look remarkably good for someone who must be at least 250 years old.

That one seems to be increasingly common, Alison. I blame the influence of the popular press, who also can't tell emigrate from immigrate and when Prince Louis was born, talked about his brother and sister's 'descendants' (pretty remarkable for a couple of tots).
