Title: STAFF ACTION  - MARK 2 (FCS)
Post by Jennie on Dec 31st, 2003, 10:07pm
Two days after Mary-Lou's disastrous journey to Interlaken, the Staff of the Chalet School went to visit Hilda Annersley, totally ignoring the fact that some of the were supposed to be on duty. Their blithe assumption that they would not be missed was based on the fact that their esteemed Headmistress was in fact snoring merrily in her cubby-hole of an office, helped in her slumbers by a small (ish) canister of gas which had been concocted in the School's very own Science lab and piped in through a hole conveniently cut through the wall by Gaudenz, the School's invaluable handyman. Alas, the assembled stff had no reason to suspect that Karen the cook had also decided to take a little time out from being nagged by OOAOML, and had put a sleeping pill into the young lady's Kaffee.

Hilda answered the door, beaming at her former colleagues.

'Well', she said, 'quite a deputation. Why don't you all come in and tell me what's been going on? I take it that you have some news for me about our little campaign.'

'Well, yesterday we had the two Freung brothers, one at nine o'clock and one at ten o'clock. As they're identical twins, it was quite laughable to see her face when I showed the second one in.' said Rosalie.

A wicked grin spread over her face. 'Especially as she had such a bad time of it in Interlaken the day before, going down there for a non-existent appointment. She tried to blame me for that, but I showed her the diary, and there was the appointment written down in her own handwriting. She tried to accuse me of fixing it up, but I told her that I had seen her writing it down herself. She tried to argue with that, but I told her that if she tried to blame me for it, I would leave and then sue the School for wrongful dismissal. That told her,' Rosalie concluded triumphantly.

'What exactly happened to her in Interlaken?' asked Hilda.

'Oh, she went down there for an appointment that didn't exist, as we told you, then Biddy Courvoisier met her and kept her talking so that she would miss the train back. Apparently she looked absolutely exhausted. Biddy left her to make her way to the Bahnhof, but of course she had to wait for several hours for a train. It seems that she fell asleep on the Station, but she was twitching so much in her sleep that the station staff thought she was a drug addict and called the Police. She was dragged off to the Police station, given all sorts of tests by a doctor they called in, and had a lot of trouble convincing them that she was the Headmistress of the Chalet School. She finally arrived back here at three o'clock in the morning, driven by the Police, and had a terrible job to wake Gaudenz to let her in. Isn't it strange that someone who's usually so meticulous should just happen to mislay his keys on that very night?' Rosalie concluded with a beaming smile.

Feel free to join in Ladies. Here's a little more.

.......................................................................................

'Then of course she had the Freung brothers later that day, one came for an appointment at  nine o'clock, then the other brother at ten o'clock. She looked completely and utterly confused as they are identical, but very different in character. To make it more complete, I pretended that she'd had only one appointment and even showed her the diary to prove it. She looked as if she wanted to slaughter me there and then, but I just smiled sweetly at her, and asked her if she had a headache.

'She said that she had, and I've got to admit it, she looked an absolute and utter wreck.  Then she stamped off to bed, but got up again a couple of hours later, and I noticed that she kept touching her ears. I think Nancy's alarm clock must have done her a power of good.'

The entire staff erupted in gales of laughter, and Hilda soon had to hold her sides as they were aching.

Then she asked, 'How have you all managed to come over here, shouldn't some of you be on duty?'

'Really Hilda,' Rosalie replied through her giggles, 'You know perfectly well that I can forge anyone's writing. I put a notice on the Staffroom board to say that our beloved Leaderene was taking Prep duty tonight so the staff could all have a free evening. of course, we took her at her word, so here we are.'

Meanwhile, over at Freudesheim, Jo Maynard was having a snappy sort of evening. Every time her husband, Jack, tried to talk to her, she snapped back at him, which made him, in turn, feel aggrieved.
'What's got into you this last couple of days, Jo? You're permanently short- tempered, you're snapping at everyone, the children are upset, Anna's muttering darkly about the lack of appreciation and you still carry on as though you were a nasty little corgi, yapping and snapping at everyone. Now, what's wrong with you?'

'There's nothing wrong with me, I'm just a little tired with everything I've got to do, that's all.'
'Such as...?'

The house, the children, my writing, isn't that enough?'

'Considering that Anna does the housework, Rosli looks after the children, and you don't happen to have a book on the go at the moment, no, it isn't enough. So, what's wrong?'
'Well, I'm not sleeping properly. I keep waking up, thinking that I can hear the telephone ringing, but it's never actually ringing.'

'I don't know, Jo. If it's not one thing with you, it's another. I can't hear this telephone of yours, and don't forget that we sleep in the same bedroom. I think you're hearing things. We'd better have you admitted to the San for a complete overhaul, see if we can't put you right. Telephones ringing, indeed. You'll be telling me next that Mary-Lou needs support in her new job.'

'She does, Jack. Just think, she's new to it, and she neeeds my experience and advice to help her through settling in to her new job.'

'Mary-Lou happens to be perfectly sane and competent, my girl, she doesn't need any help form you. No, it;s the San for you, for at least a week, until we get to the bottom of this. I'll just go and give Eugen Courvoisier a ring, and tell him to let Biddy know. She'll be able to pop over every day to see that the children are all right. We'll soon have you feeling more like your old self again.'

At Hilda's chalet, the staff were sittig down enjoying the excellent coffee that had been served, when the noise of the phone ringing disturbed the general air of well-being.

Hilda went to answer it, and after listening intently for a few minute, returned with a huge, beaming smile on her face.
'That was Biddy,' she announced. 'Apparently, Jo has been rather on edge these past few days, suffering from a mysterious episode of telephone bells in the night. Jack is insisting that she goes into the San for a check-up, she will be staying in for a week at least. They've asked Biddy to pop into Freudesheim every day to chack that the children are all right. Now ladies, who do we know at the San who will be willing to help us. After all, we need to keep her off balance for a good long time. Put your thinking caps on, and let's have some plans to ensure that she has a nice long rest in the peace and quiet of the San.'

Here Hilda sniggered in a most unladylike way that would have shocked the asembled girls of the Chalet School if they had been able to see her.

What the assembled girls of the Chalet School were able to see was their 'beloved' Headmistress storming and stamping around the School, looking for her errant Staff.

The Prefects were all sitting in their room laughing and chattering, after all, if the Staff could have the evening off, so could they. This pleasant state of affairs was shattered when Mary-Lou erupted into the room, brandishing a piece of paper and yelling, 'Who put this up on the notice-board? Come on, own up whoever didi it.'

'Who did what, Miss Trelawny? asked Angela.

Put up this, this, this ....'

'I don't think we know what you're talking about, Miss Trelawny,' Angela replied. 'Is that something from the Staffroom?'

'Don't play the innocents with me.' yelled the enraged Head, 'I'll demote you all and appoint my own Head girl and Prefects. You're all fired, sacked, deprived of office.'
'That's your privilege, Miss Trelawney,' replied Angela insolently, 'but just who are you going to get to replace us? I'm going to write to Daddy, and he'll want to see that paper that you're accusing us of writing.'

She snatched the paper out of OOAOML's hand and looked at it closely, then burst into speech.
'This is your handwriting, Miss Trelawny, so why are you blaming us for this notice? Well, since I've been sacked as Head Girl, I'm certainly not going to help with seeing that the Juniors go to bed quietly. I'm going to send this to Daddy, and ask him to deal with this.'

'I'm not going to Prayers, either,' burst  out another girl. 'I just can't feel it's right to listen to prayers read by someone who's just falsely accused me of forgery.'

With that, the assembled body of the former Prefects stood up, and left the room to go the the Middles' Common Room, where they found these young ladies playing a wild game of poker dice whilst eating all the contents of their tuck-boxes which they had broken into in Matey's absence.

Fortunately no one had found Miss Annersley and miss Wilson's stack of cigarettes yet. There were certain things that were quite OK, but underage smoking wasn't a good idea. They wanted to get rid of Miss Trelawney, not the whole school.

Jo had arrived at the San, and had been met by Eugen and a new doctor with whom she was unfamiliar. He introduced himself as Herr Doktor Carlmund Freung, and at this pronouncement Joey went white, and collapsed into the waiting arms of Hilary Graves.

"It will be no problem. I'm sure she will benefit from our de-programming clinic. I assure you that her writing abilities will not suffer, and she will still be able to contribute to the family income."
"I'm sure that Jack wouldn't mind losing that, if she also lost her obsession with having more children."

Although she was the Matron, Helen Graves (I hope that's the correct Christian Name) told the doctors that she would be the one who would 'special' Jo.

No-one actually knew of the resentment that Helen harboured against Jo Maynard. Helen had fallen rather hard for a very nice young doctor who had come to the San a couple of years before to see if he would like to work there. Matters had been progressing very nicely until Jo Maynard had met him on one of her much dreaded 'visits' to the San, otherwise known to staff and patients as 'that b****y Jo Maynard's interference'. Jo had immmediately latched onto him, employing all her famous 'charm', and had issued invitations which the poor young man had felt unable to refuse.

After an indigestible tea at Freudesheim, in the course of which he had been forced to accept that all the Maynard offspring would henceforward call him 'Uncle Jonathan' and had been almost overwhelmed by the eleven of them who were in a particularly rambunctious mood which their doting mother had fondly described as high spirits, the young man had staggered back to the San, vowing that he would never set foot in Freudesheim again. As he glumly looked at all the sticky fingermarks on his face, neck, hands and ears, not to mention his best suit, shirt and tie, he addressed his deity in terms too vulgar to mention on a refined board such as this.

However, Jo being Jo, she had been unable to let matters rest, and had pestered him with phone calls and personal visits until the poor young man had seen only one  solution to the problem. He had packed his cases and left the San, saying that he did not think a career in TB would suit him at all.

Helen had never heard from him again.

Smiling sweetly at the doctors, she assured them that she would take very good care of Mrs Maynard, very good care indeed.

Her sweet smiles had changed to a look of grim satisfaction as she entered her patient's room, bearing with her the hot soapy water, large bed-pan and rubber tubing with which she intended to give her patient the first of a twice daily series of extra-strong enemas.

Meanwhile, Mary Lou had gone to Freudesheim, only to find Jack very blissed out, naked in the arms of Anna. This was the real reason she'd stayed with him all these years - as a non-Catholic she was free to use the pill, and therefore Jack had been able to find alternative satisfaction.

Mary lou was horrified, and sat down in the middle of the Saal, which was somewhat inconvenient...

The Staff of the world-renowned Chalet School had seen her departure for Freudesheim with many expressions of happiness and satisfaction.

They swooped down on the unruly Middles and snatched all their tuck away from them, carried it back to the Staff-room, and promptly ate the lot. When they had wiped the last crumbs from their mouths, they settled down to a prolonged episode of serious plotting.

The first suggestion was adopted unanimously. Someone would write  anonymous letters to The Times, The Sun and the Daily Express telling them of the inability of the new Headmistress to control and manage the school. As so many rich and prominent people sent their daughters there, they were hoping to hear the howls of indignation generated in London from the elevation of the Gornetz Platz. Kathie Ferrars won the toss for this job, assuring the losers that their
turns would come very, very soon.

The second suggestion which they unanimously decided to accept came from Matey. She, being a wizard with pills, lotions and potions, suggested that a certain 'tonic' of her own concoction should be added to Mary-Lou's food.

Karen the cook, who was sitting in on the meeting as a representative of the kitchen staff, volunteered for the job of ensuring that Mary-Lou received her due dosage. When she had finished her short speech of reassurance that OOAOML would soon be feeling much better, she uttered the immortal word, 'Yessss!' and waved a clenched fist in the direction of Freudesheim. Unfortunately, her middle digit came loose from the muscular contraction, and waved wildly in the air.

Which was rather accurately mirroring the action of Helen Grave's finger as it headed towards a waxy Joey.

Mary Lou had sat down in the nappy bucket in the middle of Freudesheim, and Anna despatched Rosli to mop up the mess.

Jack insisted on administering her with shots there and then, in case she'd contracted something.

"Uncle Jack, I'm sure the shots aren't supposed to come out of a .22 rifle."

Title: Re: STAFF ACTION  - MARK 2 (FCS)
Post by Jennie on Jan 2nd, 2004, 3:23pm
Jack was recalled to himself by these words, and with a muttered oath, he threw down the rifle, which he had fortunately forgotten to load, and went off in search of an alternative 'remedy'. Rooting through the drawers of his desk, he found a large bottle of the pills which he prescribed for Jo under the guise of vitamins intended to keep her healthy, something that he described as a necessity for the mother of eleven *eleven* children, as she really needed to be careful of her health as a safeguard against the TB.
'Safeguard against driving me mad, that's more like it,' he said, picking up the bottle which contained not only a mild(ish) sedative, but also a mild(ish) hallucinogen, plus a large dose of contraceptive hormones plus one or two other little things, (too numerous to mention) that ensured that Jack spent at least some of his time happily (i.e. without Jo).

Walking back into the Saal, he presented OOAOML with the bottle, saying, 'Take one of these three times a day, WITHOUT FAIL, at mealtimes. They'll soon have you in a better state of mind.'  Thinking, (Almost comatose, which HAS to be better than your usual self.)

He guided her to the door, repeating his instructions about taking her tablets regularly, then returned to his study. Sitting down in the big comfortable chair behind his desk he began to think about how he was going to manage without Jo and Mary-Lou.
'I'm going to throw an absolute monster of a party' he said to himself. 'A proper party, none of your b****y cakes full of honey, nuts and cream, none of your hot chocolate with positive featherbeds of whipped cream, a real party with lots of booze and a lot of hot women'.

Here we must  leave Jack for the moment, smiling beatifically to himself, contemplating a life free of his wife and his children. He even, for a brief blissful moment, contemplated putting them up for adoption, but then realised that there probably wasn't anyone in the whole wide world who would be fool enough to want to take them on, any of them.

Mary Lou realised that these were the ones that Joey kept throwing away, and did likewise. There were another packet in the box though, marked 'Viagra'.

Unfamiliar with the name, she took one, feeling sufficiently stressed not to care. Immediately, she turned round, and headed back to Freudesheim. Jack, naked, was hot.

Fortunately Jack had foreseen this development, and had locked and bolted all the doors and windows at Freudesheim, thus denying entry to OOAOML.
What OOAOML (and Jo) had failed to realise was the the packs called Viagra in fact contained tablets of the very same substance(s) as the tablets which they were supposed to be taking, with the addition of a little something that kicked in first, then subsided quickly, leaving the patient in the desired condition. Unable to get into the house, Mary-Lou returned to the Chalet School where she ignored the fact that the Sixth Formers were having an energetic lesson in dancing the can-can as they were the ones who were giving the entertainment on the Saturday evening, and had decided to invite some of the younger doctors and scrummier - looking medical students for the occasion, instead of a decorous evening with the Juniors playing paper games.

Mis Dene had aided and abetted them by signing an order form for various sophisticated foodstuffs and a gross of bottles of wines and spirits, signed in OOAOML's writing, of course.

Back at the San, Jo was lying wretchedly in bed, feeling that she had had her insides scrubbed out with a brillo pad and wondering when the pain was going to stop. Her thoughts were interrupted by the entrance of Matron Graves who smiled at her and said in her brightest, most cheerful tones, ( she had been longing to get her hands on Jo Maynard for a couple of years now, and was determined to make the most of it whilst she had the chance) ' Well, what a long face. You really must try to cheer up, Mrs Maynard. A good, positive state of mind will speed your recovery, you know that very well. So, stop sulking, it's time for your physiotherapy.'  (What Matron kindly refrained from mentioning was that Jo had frequently counselled their    terminal patients to adopt a cheerful, positive frame of mind, thus rendering their deathbeds horrific with feelings of guilt, Mingled with relief that at least if they were dead, they would not have to suffer any more of Jo's visits.

Matron dragged Jo out of bed, put her into a wheelchair, pushed her to the San's fitness room, and tipped her patient out of the chair onto the treadmill. She hauled Jo to her feet, tied her hands to the bar at the front, switched on the machine to its  the highest speed, and then said brightly. 'Just twenty miles for your first treatment. We don't want to overdo it, do we?'

Probably an '18' for the rest of this

----------------

After her nap, Mary Lou found some blue pills in her bedside cabinet, and wondered what on earth Miss Annersley had used them for.

She felt compelled to dress in her G-string, short skirt and best stockings, cutting a fine figure. Jack, who, feeling guilt at dosing her, had slipped over to school and met with this rather nice blonde.

(actually his real intention had been to invite the legal sixth formers over to his wine and wenches party with the doctors from the san)

He walked into the annexe and....

Unfortunately, the first person OOAOML encountered, was the father of Angela Russell, who had flown over to Switzerland in response to an agitated phone call from his daughter. He had been none too pleased to have to drop everything and hurry himself up to the Gornetz Platz, especially as he had had to take the mountain railway, which he thoroughly disliked.

To see the supposed Head of the Chalet School dressed in this way shocked him to the core. He was too stunned to speak for a moment, but then burst out, the first words from his tongue being an outright condemnation of  the treatment of his daughter.

In the Physio Room at the San, Jo Maynard was reaching the last stages of exhaustion. she had managed a mile on the treadmill at the top speed, but had then begun to slump so that her legs were dragged our behind her with her feet touching the floor.

Matron Graves, observing this, had stopped the treadmill, raising Jo's hopes of a speedy release. These hopes quickly slunk out of the room when they saw the glint in Matron's eyes. She hauled Jo to her feet, (no easy task considering that she had had had eleven children and it showed,) and forced her to run again, saying in her sweetest tones (with just an undercurrent of finest stainless steel)  'Now then, Mrs Maynard, be positive and cheerful. How often have I heard you say those very words to our patients here? Follow your own advice and this will soon be over. Only nineteen miles to go, now, so, off we go.'

Jo looked at her with lacklustre eyes and slowly and pathetically began to run again.

Mary-Lou was also receiving some treatment, applied by the sharp edge of Matey's tongue.
'Get up at once, you have Prayers to take, classes to teach and a meeting of the Board of Trustees to attand. Stop behaving like a spineless jellyfish. and get up and get on with the day. If we all collapsed after a little set-back, where would this school be? Here, take this tablet, it will soon have you in a suitable state.'
Dear Readers, please not that Matey offered no definition of the word 'suitable.)

Mary-Lou obediently swallowed the tablet, then docilely followed Matey's orders to wash her face and get dressed.

Matey then gave her push towards the door, and Mary-Lou, who for some reason could not quite seem to manage her usual self-assurance, ambled off downthe corridor to the Hall.
When she reached the Hall, she went in, only to discover that Nancy Wilmot was hissing at her. 'You said that you were taking the Catholic girls today, you should have been in the Gym five minutes ago.'
With that, Nancy turned her round and guided her out of the door.
After she had slowly made her way to the Gym, feeling puzzled, as she definitely could not remember saying that she would lead prayers for the Catholic girls, she entered the Gym to find Jeanne de Lachennais taking prayers, with the girls kneeling in reverent attitudes.
As Mary-Lou lurched in through the doors, the atmosphere was completely broken  and Jeanne de Lachennais looked up in annoyance.
As the girls all turned around to look at their Headmistress, no-one actually saw Jeanne taking photographs of Mary-Lou. Whipping the camera back into the pocket of her gown, she quickly called the girls to order, then instructed two of the Prefects to escort the Headmistress back to her office.

Mary-Lou collapsed into her chair and put her head between her hands.  Something funny was happening - or at least things were happening that she didn't remember - or something.  Her head felt funny, as if it didn't belong to her, and everything was out of control.  Before she had any chance to marshall her thoughts, the intercom buzzed,a nd Rosalie's voice came through.
"The prospective parents ahve arrived, Miss Trelawney.  Shall I send them through?"
"NO!" squawked Mary-Lou, just as the door opened, and a most peculair couple came into the room.  The man was dressed in full Indian chief regalia, including a huge headdress of eagle feathers, while the woman was wearing the grass skirt of the South Sea Islander.  Mary-Lopu was faitnly relieved to see that she was also wearing soemthing round her top, as she had a faint idea that such women often wetn topless!  Taking a deep steadying breath, she rose to her feet.
"Welcome to the Chalet Shool" she said.

At least that was what she meant to say, but it actually came out as "welcome to the camera school". Then she gave an unearthly wail and collapsed on the Indian man, bringing his feathers down in her fall.

If Mary-Lou was in any fit state to notice, this would have revealed the Indian Chief to be Gaudenz, but the mixture of drugs she had been given had really kicked in by this time, and she was too far gone to notice anything.  Gaudenz turned towards his accomplice (Biddy Courvoisier) and grinned.
"She is far gone, nicht war?  Have you the camera, that we may capture this moment?"
"Sure an' I have." Biddy replied, and pulled a small camera out of her grass skirt.  The resultant photograph showed the Head of the Chalet School flat out on the floor, her skirt rucked up round her hips and a trail of 'something' hanging from her mouth.  A more unpreposessing site could not be imagined.  The two grinned at each other, and left the room, leaving the door wide open.

When the parcel arrived at the Round House, Madge did not, at first, notice the photographs, as she had been expecting the papers they had been sent with, and was immersed in them for some time.  However, as she laid them aside, she noticed the photos lying on the floor, where they had fallen as she had pulled them contents from the envelope.  She bent to pick them up and stared in disbelief!  That was surely not the Head of the Chalet School?  Swiftly she leafed through them, noting the obvious signs of intoxication or drug use - it was impossible to tell which from the evidence she held.  As the initial shock wore off, her eyes took on the steely look that early Chalet School miscreants had learnt to dread.  She walked into Jem's study, and lifted the phone to put through a long distance call to the Gornetz Platz.

She was unable to get Jo on the phone as that lady was, unknown to Madge, a patient in the San. So, Madge rang the Chalet School and was able to get hold of Rosalie Dene.

When sh spoke to Rosalie, at first that young lady pretended to be in a state of total ignorance of the present condition of  OOAOML, but when Madge spoke in her sternest voice, (which Rosalie had secretly been hoping to hear) Rosalie poured out all the thousand and one transgressions committed by the new Headmistress. she then finished by saying that they had not been able to get any advice from Mrs Maynard, as she had been admitted to the San, suffering from a bad attack of phanton phone bells.

'We really don't know what to do, Lady Russell,' Rosalie added. 'If only you were here to take charge, we might get some guidance in this situation'

"It's starting to affect the girls," she went on.  "The Prefects are finding that they are not being obeyed as they used to be - they have always been seen as the Head's Representatives, if you remember."
"I do!  We certainly have to do something about this.  I shall have to consult my diary, and speak to Jem of course, but I shall come out as soon as possible."

Meanwhile, back at the aforementioned San, Jo Maynard was beginning to wish that she had never been born.

After being forced to run twenty miles on the treadmill, she had been dragged (I mean helped) back to her room by Helen Graves. That good lady had improved the shining hour by administering yet another hot, soapy enema from hell to her patient, who afterwards lay, still, grey and to all appearances............

Later, Jack Maynard popped his head round the door of her room and saw his moaning, groaning wife. he smiled sweetly at Helen, and said, 'Well, I see that she's much improved from what she was yesterday, keep up the good work, Matron.
I'll look in again tomorrow. Make sure she has a good night's sleep tonight, won't you.'
'Of course, Dr Maynard.'  demurely replied the Matron.

Jo felt as though her whole world had disintegrated.  Nothing was as it should be, and she didn't know why.  Why ws Helen Graves being so cruel to her?  Why was she here at all?  Why wasn't Jack helping her?
Nothing made any sense, and she was too physically exhausted to think about it. Her eyes closed and she fell into a deep sleep.

As soon as Helen Graves saw this on the monitor, she smiled grimly.  Sleep was a known healer, so she hurried down the corridor, and burst into Jo's room like a mini hurricane.
"Come on, Mrs Maynard, no malingering here you know.  Up you come.  We must get you to Occupational Therapy for your daily session.  Doctors orders.

Esmeralda, I'm ashamed of you. Feeling sorry for Jo, forsooth! You should know better by now.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As Jo was being manhandled, sorry assisted, down the corridor by Helen Graves, she began to wonder what she had done to deserve this sort of treatment. She began to make timid (for Jo) enquiries, only to find her words cut off before she could utter more than a couple. Ignoring the piteous expression on Jo's face, Helen snarled at her, 'No more of that moaning and whining from you, young lady. If you can tell people to keep a smile on their faces, you'd damn well better take your own advice. Now shut up and smile.'

Jo found herself being led, none too gently, down the stairs to the boiler room.

This room, in the bowels of the building, and the mere thought of the word bowels gave Jo immense surges of agony, was dimly lit, very hot, with a deep red glow around the doors of the boilers.

She began to whimper, but was ignored by the kindly Matron. (I wish to state unequivocally here, that if we had been patients at the San, Matron Graves would have treated us with the utmost kindness. Besides, she wouldn't be anything but kind to people who devised such interesting tortures for Jo.)She  dragged Jo over to an enormous heap of coke, thrust a shovel into her hands, and said, 'Now, you've got two hours to shovel that heap of coke from there to here, and don't let me see you slacking.'

Jo attempted to whimper that she was tired, but her pleas were ignored. She began to shift the heap of coke from its location to the place indicated. Every time she began to flag, she was soundly slapped and told to work harder.

At last she had finished. Jo thought it was probably the hardest two hours of her life, which of course, just goes to show that she was a complete stranger to honest toil. Seeing that it was finished, the entire three tons of coke having been moved, she rested, trembling, on the handle of her shovel.
She rested too soon. She found herself being slapped awake again, and then was told in no uncertain terms to shovel the entire three tons back to its original place.

The deep booming of the gong for Abendessen brought mary-Lou partially back to her senses.  Enough for her to understand that she needed to be in the Speisesaal.  She staggered to her feet, and groped her way down the corridor from the Annexe, clinging to the wall as she went.  She had no idea of the way she looked, which was probably just as well for her peace of mind.  Her hair was standing up in spikes all over her head, just as if it had been Brillcreamed!  (Funny that - it had!).  Her skirt had become rucked up and caught in her knickers, showing that she still wore the regulation Chalet School gym knickers.  Her blouse had become untucked from her skirt, and some of the buttons had been torn off, so that it gaped open in all the wrong places.  As she walked into the Speisesaal, and the girls saw her, and deathly silence descended, broken only by the occasional splutter from those girls who were incapable of controlling hteir mirth.

Accepting the silence as her due, she made her unsteady way to the head table, where she proceeded to stumble through the bief latin grace, unmindful of the fact that the meal was already half over, and desert was about to be served.  The staff managed to remain serious throughout by some heroic contortions, and the Prefects followed their example pretty well.  However, as soon as they had reseated themselves, the rest of the school gave way, and howles of laughter threatened to shake the very foundations of the school.  mary-Lou looked about in bewilderment, wondering what the joke was.  Turning to Rosalie, who was sitting beside her, she asked "What have I missed?  There must have been something funny happen just before I came in."

After shovelling three tons of coke from one side of a dark, hot boiler room to the other and then back again, Jo Maynard was in no state to offer any resistance to Helen Graves. Observing this with a deep sense of satisfaction, Helen then dragged Jo back up to her room. On the way they met Eugen Courvoisier, who smiled benignly on seeing Jo, and spoke to her cheerfully. "Glad to see that you're responding to treatment so well, jo. Keep up the good work, Matron.'

'Oh, I shall, Dr. Courvoisier, I shall, believe me.'  She gave him a beaming smile and quick-marched Jo off back to her room.
There, she proceeded to strip the mattress off the bed, and forced Jo to lie on the bare springs.
'Now,' she said brightly, 'time for your temperature check'
Jo, by now too weak to resist, obediently opened her mouth.
'Not that way, on your side.'
Jo tried to protest, but found herself face down on the springs, with her reduced backside in the air. Helen then inserted not only the traditional daffodil, but also three tulips and a pot of hyacinths.
'Now don't move, it could be dangerous for you. I'll just give it time to take, be back soon.'
She then left the room and went to her office where she drank two cups of coffee in a leisurely way, ate a cream cake in a cntemplative fashion, popped two bezedrine tablets, then burping gently, returned to her patient.

'Tut tut, Mrs. Maynard, I can see from here that your temperature is up. I shall have to do something to reduce it fairly quickly.'

Put on the spot, Rosalie choked a little, and then managed to give some sort of reply.  "Someone said soemthing funny and it had just goen round the room.  I can't remember what it was well enough to tell you properly.  You wouldn't get the joke."
Karen came in to serve Mary-Lou herself, which ensured that she received a good hefty top-up to her drug levels.  By the time she had finished eating, her speech was once more almost unintelligable, though she insisted on dismissing the girls to their rest period herself.  Naturally, the topic of conversation for the whole half hour rest was the state of the Head.  Talking was banned during the rest period, but no-one was enforcing such things these days.  The girls were aware that this was likely to be only temporary, so were determined to make the most of their opportunities.

After Mary-Lou had been helped back to the study, Rosalie brought the wire from Lady Russell that had arrived earlier in the day.  "Arriving Berne airport 18.00 hours.  Please meet me."  ML blinked at the wire in an owlish fashion.
"What does this mean, Rosalie?  It doesn't make sense."
"Lady Russell is flying out to Switzerland, Miss Trelawney, and would like you to meet her at Berne Airport at 18 tonight.  You will need to set off straight away if you are to get there in time.  If you don't mind my saying so, you don't look in a fit state to drive yourself.  Would you like me to drive you?"
Rosalie was having a hard job to keep a straight face, but ML only picked up the pseudo-concern in her voice - which she took at face value, never dreaming that Rosalie was her enemy.  Truth be told, she was in no fit state to realise anything very much, only that she had to go to Berne to meet someone important.  Rosalie had already made up a nicely doctored flask of coffee, which she would give to ML just before she met Madge.

By the time that Rosalie and ML had got to Berne, ML was in exactly the condition that Rosalie had planned for.  She could walk, just, and speak, more or less.  The two women staggered into the Arrivals Hall, Rosalie supporting most of ML's weight.  A security guard on patrol eyed them warily, but seemd to believe that the problem was drink.  He walked away, but kept a wary eye on them.  Rosalie smiled softly to herself, hoping her timing would hold up.  She deposited ML in a seat in the waiting area, and went to check the Arrivlas monitors.  She could see that the plane had landed, but the luggage had not yet reached the baggage hall.  Glancing back at her Head, she saw that ML had slumped sideways, and looked as if she was dozing,

As soon as the monitor told her that the baggage was available for colection, Rosalie skipped back to ML.  Dipping into her bag, she produced the vaccuum flask that looked as if it held coffee.  In reality it was coffee +.  She roused Jo sufficiently to enable her to have a nice long drink, and then hauled her to her feet.  As they made theri way to the gate, Rosalie was pleased to hear ML start to sing, loudly.  When Madge came through the gate, she was electrified to see the Security Guard talking to Rosalie and ML, and as she reached the group, he took ML's arm, and started to lead her away.
"Excuse me, could you tell me what is going on?" she asked. "That lady is supposed to be meeting me."
"I am taking her into custody for her own protection, mein Frau.  She is obviously intoxicated, or under the influence of drugs of some sort, and willbe far better sleeping it off in a nice cosy cell.  She will have to go to court tomorrow for disturbing the peace."

I'm beginning to see that I am going to have to write a counteractive drabble - showing just how well Mary-Lou runs the school, and how supportive Joey Maynard is!

Rachel, I love all your writing!  It's fantastic.

Rosalie and Madge returned to the Chalet School almost in silence.  Madge was determined to get tot he bottom of the situation, but wanted all the staff together before she started delving.  Rosalie was very pleased witht he way things had goen so far, and didn't want to push her luck.

Once back at the Gornetz Platz, both retired to bed immediately, as it was very late.  The following day Madge called an emergency staff meeting, leaving the Prefects in charge of the school.  Needless to say, there was no trouble from any quarter, whilst the meeting was in progress.

In the staff room, everyone settled down to some serious talking.  It was not long before Madge had a grasp of the way things had gone since ML became Head.  Her delusions that she could take two different sets of Prayers at the same time, the lack of discipline exhibited by both ML and the rest of the school, that the staff had been 'powerless' to deal with.  The damning evidence mounted,a nd Madge looked grimmer and grimmer.
"I understand that Jo swung the opinion of the panel in ML favour, saying that the school needed a young person with fresh ideas at the helm.  Do any of you think the experiment has been a success?  I have the power to ask for ML's resignation and appoint soemone else in her place if I feel it necessary."

"I believe the experiment could have been a success were it not for one little fact." Only one person was speaking in Mary-Lou's defence, and all the mistresses immediately swung round to see who was going against them - who was the fink.

Matron Gould stood, strong and proud, returning glare for glare. The mistresses had made the usual mistake of thinking Matron Lloyd was the one, the only, the true matron of the CS. Now was Matron Gould's chance for revenge, and she meant to take it.

Ina a calm voice, Matron Gould lais out all the other evidence for Madge Russell; the tales of druggings, cruelty to the young Headmistress, the conspiracy to undermine the young woman at every turn. As Matron Gould continued her tale, more than one mistress was seen to blush; wordlessly they confirmed the truth of the tale.

Madge stared around at them all when the tale was finished. "You bunch of evil old cows!" she said at last. "Consider yourselves all dismissed without references!"

Another voice spoke up.  "However, that is neither here nor there.  The school's reputation has suffered, and Mary-Lou was not drugged or drunk all the time.  At the beginning she made enough mistakes to alienate all the staff, the Prefects, and much of the school.  Think, Lady Russell, why would a loyal staff ever consider this sort of vendetta unless they had good reason.  Think also of who will teach the girls if you sack all the staff - for it will be all of them, I assure you.  Matron Gould may have supported ML, but she did nothing to help her, and that makes her an accessory, does it not?"

Madge turned in surprise at hearing Biddy's voice, for she was not aware that the former mistress had been invited to the meeting.  The seriousness of the situation had robbed Biddy of all her Irishness, and this alone was enough to make Madge consider her words very carefully.

Okay, this is the first real go I've had at joining in this story, and I'm working on a very faint memory of the first few parts, so be indulgent, please.

Mary-Lou rather nervously watched the scene in the staff room unfold. She wasn't at all keen on the idea of being drugged and mocked so mercilessly by almost all members of staff. Also, it had to be admitted, she was astonished that Matron Gould, of all people, had sprung to her defence. Mary-Lou was under no delusions that she wasn't overly popular with that person, but that Matron Gould had kept quiet, knowing that her opinions would find few, if any sympathisers.

*   *   *

With a start, she looked around to find herself once more in the staff meeting at which the future Head of the Chalet Shool was being discussed. Mary Lou looked around at the familiar surroundings and heaved a silent, but thankful, sigh, at the same time cursing her overactive imagination. Joey sat opposite, not in the San, having her 'temperature taken' by a sadistic Matron Graves.

"And so," Madge's voice interrupted Mary Lou's thoughts, "I would like to hear applications for the next Head."

Kathie Ferrars rose to her feet. "I propose Nancy Wilmot," she declared.

A murmur went around the room, with heads nodding, and then there was silence.

"Anyone else?" Madge asked, and when there were no other offers, "Well, that seems very straightforward. I would, however, like to have the proposal seconded."

"I'd like to second it," Mary Lou suggested, rather timidly, from her seat.

Jo Maynard nodded at Mary Lou, and then at her sister, who smiled around the room.

"Well, thank you, ladies. Your decision will be announced to the school in the next few days."

Mary Lou sat back in her chair with a sigh of relief, before turning to Nancy and wishing her all the best for her time as Head of the Chalet School.

Like this KB - that the entire scene is Mary Lou herself visualising what may happen if she were to become Head at that point in time!

Perhaps it's time to call it a day? Not sure - after all I've only watched this one - but that would seem to be an effective ending!

Thank you KB - I think that makes a nice ending point, dreams/daydreams can be such useful plot devices can't they?

And what have I done to anyone which even approaches the viciousness of Matron Graves?
