Title: a second reunion
Post by Marianne on Jun 2nd, 2003, 2:34pm
I am afraid my writing is poor but, hey tough!

Joey walked through her home one last time before her visitors were due. It was a great day for her because huge numbers were decending upon her, she only had two children at school, all of her others had left and made lives for themselves. Besides her beloved family was her much extended family, including the Robin who she hadn't seen for may a month. As the clock crept to 10 o'clock her heart skipped.

There was the sound of the door opening and she hurried out excitedly, only to be greeted by the sight of her husband.  He chuckled as he saw her face.
"Joey, I do believe you're even more excited than the grandkids at Christmas!"
"Well do you blame me?"  She retorted.  "Oh Jack!  To see Robin again - I never believed it would be possible!"
"Nor I!"  A beloved voice sounded from behind Jack and a petite lady threw herself at Joey.  "Joey!  Oh Joey!"

As soon as they had finished embracing, which wasn't for some time, Robin stepped back and assessed her Jo. Jo's old tendency towards excitement had shown again and there were the telltale signs of black rings under her eyes showing the lack of sleep yet their was also colour in her cheeks which calmed Robin down. She had three months of leave, herself to recover from an illness, and the brisk air where she stood now was only one of the many reasons she intended to spend it all here.

"Oh Joey I'm so glad to be here and to see you again at last!" Robin said.
Joey, who had no use for tears usually, was looking suspiciously bright-eyed. "Oh Robin, darling, it's been so long since we last met. Letters really aren't the same thing at all!"

Jack, who had been hovering near the doorway unnoticed for the past five minutes spoke up. "Now Joey, calm yourself. Robin's here for the next three months. Why don't you two come in here and have some coffee and some of Anna's delicious bread twists."

"Oh Jack, you're still as practical as ever" said Robin as she flung her arms around him.

"Steady on old lady!!" Jack grinned at Robin. "Now come along and eat something - you look like you need it".

Robin's face flushed slightly as she followed him in to the sitting room. She had lost weight during her illness, and she knew Jack would be asking questions tomorrow...

As Joey and Robin sat talking, in between eating the delicious food Anna had brought down for them they became aware of loud voices approaching. Robin lept up excitedly as she recognised one of the voices. "Joey" she cried "Isn't that .. isn't that Daisy?".

It was, who was accompanied by her sister Primula, the four stopped and stared at each other before running excitedly at each other and embracing. Robin, who was now in tears despite her education in self control simply declared, 'I wish this mment could last forever.'

Joey, uncharacteristically recvered herself first, 'You two must stay here! You can share one of the guest rooms!, Anna, show them to the bluie one will you, and get my charming husband to take up the bags!'

After that was a stream of guests, all Joeys children arrived having traveled from far and wide, in all the excitment, Joey had failed to spot her third daughters distress...

The other two trips and Ruey had seen her distress though and the four of them slipped out into the garden so they could talk without distracting from the reunion. Daisy, seeing the departure, commented to Jo on how proud she must be of her girls and then returned to sharing with Jo and Primula the latest exploits of Tony.

The school itself was on vacation so many of the old girls were staying there and looking forward to the excitement of returning to school. For some of them it would be to rooms they had once lived in, for others they would be seeing the school for the first time in these settings as they themselves had been members of the school many years since.

Those with young children who couldn't be seperated from them were staying with some of the doctors wives along the Platz. Much of the Reunion would also take place at the school given the overwhelming number of people who had returned for the event.

Out of the triplets, they had all forged Careers for temselves; Len had married Reg and trained as a teacher after oxford, Con had gone to london to make it in the world of poetry and Margot had become a nun and travelled to India to teach orphans. The three embraced each other in sisterly love.

'So come on Margot, you never were very good at hidingwhen you were upset - out with it!' comemted the eldest triplet.

'It's terrible len, i am a terrible, terrible, person, its awful!' replied a sobbing Margot.

'Oh it can't be, your a nun! your pupils love you, come one, what can it be?'

'You will all hate me, but i will tell you. This morning i realised...i realised that i was with child, i'm going to have a baby...'

Len had had hold of her sisters hand but let go in shock, 'Gosh Margot, oh dear, damn, what a mess.' He cursing became considerably worse asthe potentiality of the sisutation dawned on her, Con had gone palest white and sat down.

'Oh Len, i knew you'd hate me! but please help i can't deal wih this on my own.' Margot pleaded with the sister so many looked to for help.

'Of course yu can't Margot, but we must wait untill this evening to tell Mamma, untill then we must play good hosts!' Ok?'

Con, now much older and wiser than her last school days had seen her, looked compassionately at her sister. "Mamma will help Margot" she said hugging her sister, as Ruey also offered encouragement.

Sitting by one of the windows over looking the gardens Daisy glanced out and saw the troubled looks on each of the four girls faces. Knowing something of the situation for Joey had phoned her to ask her suggestions as a doctor; Daisy nudged Joey and the pair slipped out of the room. There was so much chatter going on from the excited members who had begun arriving for the reunion that they were sure they would not be missed too greatly.

"Margot" called Jo gently, could you help Anna to serve more tea to our guests. Margot pulled herself together and went to assist while Jo turned to the remaining three.

With as much strength as she could find, Jo explained to them that she knew all about Margot's situation. A letter had come a week before from the Reverend Mother of Margot's convent which explained that Margot had been under great strain. Each day she treated many dying people and had formed attachments to the young children who she treated. Her longing to comfort them had led her to imagine that she was with child. She would recover for awhile and then start thinking this again in the face of another death. Jack, Jem and Daisy had all been consulted and believed that the loving care of her family and time apart from her work would help Margot to readjust.

When Margot had retired to her bed for the night, in the room she was sharing wth the triplets and Ruey Joey went in and sat on the foot  of her grown up daughters bed.

'Margot, i understand, i know, i have been told.'
'Oh Mama, really? But i don't know how  became withchild...'
'It's ok Margot, you're not, Margot, i promise, come on daughter, sleep now.'
Margot lay down, most confused but the child like trust she had for her mother had returned in her distress and she fell asleep, sleeping more peacefully than she had done for weeks.

As Joey left the room, Len followed her, 'Mamma, its so good to see you, it's wonderful with reg, but i do love being at home' Len threw her slender arms arund her middle aged mother and whispered in her ear, 'You'll have to start really knitting Mamma, you're going to be a grandmama!'

Joey shreiked in delight and danced around in a happy circle with her eldest daughter. 'I couldn't say earlier with AMrgot in such a state, and i don't want too many people to know untill Reg and I know their safe.'

'I understand Len.' Said Joey then it dawned on her 'their' 'Oh Len, it 'it' mor than one'

Len nodded and smiled, 'Yep, quads, they can tell things like that now you know!'

'I know Len , i am married to a doctor too you know!' Joey retorted i pleasure, but then she realised, 'Isn't that awfully dagerous, for the children, and you?'

'Well it can be, but there'snot alot i ca do about it now though!' The two women embraced in mother - daughter companionship, as Len departed, back to bed, Joey considered how like herself her eldest daughter was.

Jo rejoined the smaller party of women who were still gathered downstairs. Everyone had now left except those who were staying with the Maynards. Robin, Daisy and Primula were all as much family to Jo as anyone could be and she confided in them the latest about Margot (which Daisy knew already) and Len's news of quads. Robin burst into a fit of giggles as she heard of Lens news "How like you Jo!" she cried echoing Jo's sentiments of only moments before.

'I wonder what she'll call them?' robin asked, but it was a rehetorical question for she continued, 'I heard you facied calling your triplets Jane, Joan and Jean - just to continue the J tradition, i wonder wha Len will opt for!' Said Robin laughing,

'Oh Robin, call your self a nun!' retorted Joey, jumping up to tell the younger women off, bu she was too slow, Robin had run, simply saying, 'I'm exhausted, time for sleep!'

Primlula followedthe Robin, cleverly leaving Daisy and JO to discuss the other nun living in the household.

Earlier Jack had been called out to the San to look at a difficult new case and now he returned home. Jo quickly recounted the events of the last few hours as Jacks face became increasingly stern. "I think the best thing for Margot would be a few nights in the san Jo where we can observe her" he said. "It would be quieter also while the reunion is on and we can just let them know she is unwell, nothing more needs to be said".

Jo agreed far more easily than Jack had imagined. Margot had always been delicate and while the Canadian air had done much to fix that many years ago her recent time in India had worn heavily on her health.

Margot also agreed with this. She slipped in to her parents room the next morning after waking early and explained that she was actually feeling much better. She had noticed the early signs of pregnancy in Len though and had reacted to that.

'Mamma, Papa,' Margot whispered having never strayed form her childhood naes for ther parents. Jack sat up in bed expecting a disaster to have occured, 'What is it Margot, are you ok? Is it Len?'

'No Papa, i am feeling much better, i have realised what imust do...'

(Sorry to be picky but isn't Margot the first Maynard to stray from Mamma and Papa to Mother and Father ...... I thought she got all grown-up about it when in Canada and reverted to Mamma & Papa at emotional times? Which means it is OK to use it now .... just not to say that she had never strayed ....)

(Yup you are right rachel :) she was, she did, I can see EBD doing that also though and forgetting they'd begun calling her mother. I just read in Joey goes where Jo is asked if she can be called mother)

Jack hastily explained his idea of the san before Margot was able to answer which she agreed with. That morning saw her being driven to the san with Ruey going along to keep her company. The other triplets were needed to help with the big events planned for that day. Actually as far as events for the day were concerned it was mostly more old girls arriving to the school for the reunion, however all and sundry were pressed into service.

In the evening a concert would be given featuring a combination of the work of old and new girls. Felicity was excited to be singing in the event and was busily preparing.

Felicitywas also to dance as her greatest ambition  to join the royal ballet school had been fulfilled. Jo smiled as she watched her daughter sing and dance with ultimate grace.

As mistresses rushed to rescue the sobbing Felicity a small voice was heard with bell like clarity 'That's my sister'.

Phil's outburst did wonders to clear the worried looks off the faces of the girls and staff and the performance continued.  It even helped to make Joey feel better about Felicity, and take away some of the strain, as she was always given to reactly badly to these things.

She did, however, vow to talk to her youngest daughter later that night about not making a spectacle of herself.

Felicity was whisked away to Matron's room with the help of Adam Blakely. He was the newest doctor at the san and had arrived only a few weeks before so this was the first time he had visited the school.

Felicity was quite embarassed at the fact that Adam had seen the whole incident. She tried to brush her injury off, but couldn't help wincing when she put the foot on the ground. Seeing her grimace, Adam, in one swift movement, effortlessly picked the young girl up and put her back down onto the bed, disregarding her loud protests with a chuckle and a grin.

(ooooh I hadn't even thought of that!!! but no ... I'll spare you that KB)

Felicity had stopped her sobbing and was now letting her foot be attended to with a minimum of fuss although it was a bad sprain. Dr Blakely was impressed with her pluckiness, amazed by the talent of her singing and dancing and decided there and then that he would like to get to know her better.

Title: Re: a second reunion

(I was thinking about 15/16 ... it's many years after the trips left since Margot has qualified in her job and been in India working for years, Len finished her teaching and married Reg and is now expecting quads and Con is established. So if Felicity is 10yrs younger and they are about 25 or so now ... then that doesn't seem young considering when Reg first notices Len. All he is desiring is to know her better, nothing more than that.)

"Consider me snubbed" said Mary-Lou as she turned back to her conversation with Verity. Inwardly she was feeling more than a little upset.

Hilda Annersley sat from the staff table watching the crowds and crowds of old girls. She felt more than a little proud as she surveyed them. At her old table sat a mixture of past and present staff all looking as excited as young schoolgirls themselves. This next term would be her last at the school before retirement and Hilda was glad she had remained until after the reunion.

"Now girls" began Hilda Annersley, which was greeted by laughter from all directions.

She paused to let the laughter subside and then continued, 'It's wonderful to have you here, to see past pupils of every generation, some of you older than others..' Hilda looked overat Joey and her old school friends, allof whom were in their fifties. '...Thankyou for coming, i hope you enjoy your meal and the company...any one else like to say a few words?'

Hilda laughed at the predicability of tha pair and said, 'Go on then, you can both say a FEW words, no long speeches please, i'm famished!' The pair laughed, Joey in Chalet school fashion gav way tothe younger women and st down to listen to Mary-Lou's speech, which went on, and on, and on, and on...until.
'Come onw Mary-Lou let Joey say her peice, we want to eat as well today!' Mary-Lou laughed but was a little put out, howevr she still let Joey take her place.

'Thankyou mary-Lou,'said Joey smiling, 'Now folks i wontbe long, i just wanted to say hello, i'm here, and blow my families trumpet for a moment!' There were inward grones from a few of the wmen who had become at one with the non-Chalet school world, 'I'm so proud of my children,' continued Joey. 'Margot, has been in India but is at the san because she's not feeling to good, Con is fast becoming an established author in London, and Len has her on peice of news..' At this Len looked very embarrased and vowed to severly chastise her mothr after. 'Stephen and Mike are both doctors at the san, Charles is studyng for a degree in music at the moment. Felix is at school in England, but hs joined me for a week, young felicity is the only one of my girls not to finish her education here, she joined the royal ballet school a few years ago and would have bee providing you with entertaiment but she damaged her ankle. Both girls had remained close friends and although Janes own acting career was taking place at a great rate they were both present at the reunion and helping out by taking over the arrangements for the day. Firstly those in attendance would be broken into smaller groups and then short rambles would be the order of the morning.

"Oh, I do so hope we get the Auberge" exclaimed Mary-Lou.
"Why's that?" asked Evvy, momentarily jolted out of her disgust at being in the same group as this insouciant young woman.
"But of course, you won't have been before" gushed Mary-Lou "It's simply marvellous - I just know you're going to love it"
"Yes - but what's so special about it" demanded Evvy impatiently
"Oh, I couldn't possibly tell you - it's a surprise for everyone their first time and I'm certainly not going to give anything away. And that goes for the rest of you .." Mary-Lou glared meaningfully at the rest of their group before breaking into a merry peal of laughter.

Evvy inwardly rolled her eyes but knew it was pointless to press the matter further. She had heard an awful lot about this Mary-Lou character but privately she was beginning to wonder what all the fuss was about. Her first impressions had been of someone rather self-important and grandiose in manner. Evvy was a down-to-earth a person as you could hope to meet for all her title of "Lady" and she did not look favourably upon others who were seemingly less modest than herself.

*tsk - what an over-reaction, the spineless jellyfish  ;))

The group hurried into their sturdy boots and heavy overcoats with shawls pinned across their chests and headed out into the wintery sunshine, each clasping an alpenstock. They grouped together in twos and threes marching out behind Mary-Lou and Verity in quick procession.

Mary-Lou was thinking hard about her exchanges with Evvy and was moved to mutter sotto voce to Verity
"Whatever's up with Evadne Lannis? She seems to have taken a violent dislike to me and I've no idea why .."
Verity smiled "Shades of Miss Ferrars, I think"
"Whatever do you mean? This woman's never met ne from Adam and she's certainly never taught me"
"Mary-Lou - I mean it's just you being ... well, being you ..." and Verity continued to explain "...You're so self-assured and confident and treat everyone as your equals, even when you've never met them before, that it can be easily misconstrued. I expect Evvy just thought you were being a bit rude whereas we know it's just the way you are with everyone and you don't mean anything by it"
Mary-Lou nodded, remembering the same conversation she had all those years ago with Vi and Hilary
"Goodness" she said, "I hope I don't have to end up dragging her off the cliff face at the Auberge before we get this sorted ... I must see what I can do to put things right."

With Mary-Lou, to think was to act ....

So in a flash Mary-Lou had hurried over to Evadne in an attempt to put things right, 'Evadne, um, i say, i'm sorry if i offened you, i never meant to! I was always getting told off for not being frmal enough in my school days, i forgot i was still the same,' (she paused waiting for a reaction) 'Will you forgive me?' she asked fervently. However Evadne turned coldly away from the women and rejected her offer of her hand.

Inwardly quaking, Mary-Lou followed her through the door. She felt miserable inside. Hadn't she done so much for this school? Hadn't she been one of its greatest successes? As she passed a table of chattering people, they all fell silent and watched her progress out of the door. In that case, why was everyone treating her like she had the plague?
"Erm, Peresephone? Where are you?"

"Why can't I see you then" asked Mary-Lou curiously.

"Because you never look past the end of your own nose" came the reply.

At this Mary-Lou almost tripped she was so startled. All those years of helping others only to be told she never looked past her own nose? What could this mean.

At that moment Vi Lucy and Barbara McIntrye (previously Barbara Chester) walked into the room and pounced on Peresephone embracing her in a hug. "Perri" cried Vi in excitement, how glorious that you could make it. Mary-Lou stood stunned, Vi and Barbara obviously knew this person how could it be that she who had been Head girl and always led their forms had missed her so entirely.

"I thought you had been ill? But you look marvellous and so young! You don't look a day over eighteen!" Vi said, are you coming to the concert tonight?"
"No, I think not," Persephone said. "I'm only here for today."
"Pity, you never wrote!" Barbara said.
"I couldn't, but it's nice to catch up on things."
"Yes, Please write, or come visit, you know where I live." Vi said. "I'm still at home!"
Vi and Barbara walked out of the room, as they went Mary Lou could just catch Barbara's comment, "I thought Perri c...."
Mary Lou shook her head and turned to Perri. "They ignored me! My best friends ignored me!"
"They didn't know you where there, they couldn't see you?"
"Couldn't see me, why I was standing rght next to Vi."
"Yes, but I made them not see you. I'm here to show you your past, and your future if you do not change. Come," and Perri held out her hand.
"Perri?" Mary Lou said, "I thought you committed suicide in the summer holidays after youleft St Mildreds?"
"I did." perri said.
There was a blur of colour and the room spiraled away to a be replaced by a new scene. A scene full of appliances MaryLou had never seen before, a sleek, black, colour TV stood in the corner of the room and a girl dressed in a short top and trousers was sitting at another screen, with a typewriter type board in front of her.
"Where am I?" Mary Lou asked.
"In your future."

Marylou wasn't given to fainting so she didn't, but it did occur to her she might be having a terrible nightmare, yet i also occured to her she might not.

'Perrie, w...w what do yu mean? How can i be in my future? Are you a goast?'
'Not a goast Marylou, but an echo, i was re awakened when you all came to this place. This place is a magical place, this is where i had my most memorable times, my memory was preserved her by ancient magic. Do you see?'
'No, not really..' trailed the stunned marylou. Th echo surprisd Marylou fo it laughed, hysterically, not happily.
'What, whats funny?' asked marylou with more confidence than she felt.
'Oh you Marylou, your mind is so mundane, you wont possibly understand anything. The magic that has preserved me, is beyondyour comprehansion because there isn't an ounceof magic in you Marylou. You have no sprit, no soul, your life is worthless marylou!'

The scene changed to a sleek room full off typewriters and swivvel chairs. A hard faced woman with curley brown hair was sitting behind a desk. "It's no good Felicity, I don't care that you'e the daughter of Mrs Maynard, I'm not giving you time off."
"But I've got to see Phillip..."
"No,"
"You knew me at school! Surely..."
"Yes but I'm a business woman now, not a school girl, and so are you. You can't get out of things because you're the daughter of mrs Maynard here."
"You got away with more stuff than I ever..."
"GET OUT! You're fired, I can't have lazy, cheeky workers here..."
The scene faded. "That girl was the daughter of someone who cared for you once. You can't see beyond the end of your nose, to see that the girl needs her fiance t tell him something vital. You never think that other people could ever be in love."

Here, I'm taking you back in time now, to see your past through other people's eyes..."

Mary-Lou was back in the junior common room in St Briavels. Standing next to her was Phil Craven. "Oh my gosh! I remember Phil, she was the most stubborn and sulky girl I had the misfortune to meet!"
"Sulky with good cause" said Perri. "You never realised just how much you got away with did you? Phil did. She reacted against you, and you and your clan shunned her, believing her to be in the wrong. She was not". A series of scenes fashed in front of Mary-Lou. Her younger self answering and asking questions in a way that had her class mates rolling their eyes. She saw a girl from another class anwsering in the same manner as Mary-Lou and she was sent outside the room for cheek. There was another girl who was sent to the head for the same thing, and yet Mary-Lou escaped punishement.
The landscape changed, and they were now inside the Swiss Chalet School...

Drat! I've left Thedodora downstairs!!!
MaryLou saw herself telling off Len for butting in, slowly she began to blush...
"Why did I tell Len off for something that I've always done..."
"Perhaps it was because you never thought that you could be wrong, that anyone else could do your job?"
"I think that's it... But how can I stop this?"
"By only butting in when you need to, letting others choose their own destiny..."
"I'll do all that!"
"And letting others finish what they were saying."
"I I'll try." MaryLou said.
"I know you will, you've always been trying!" Perri laughed pleasantly.
The scenery spiralled away and the only thing MaryLou could hear was Perri's laughter...

Suddenly Mary-Lou found herself standing in the Maynards spiesalle (sp?)  watching her 16 year old self interupting a candle-light meal for Jo and Jack. She remembered the incident, she had come over to tell Jo about how she had dealt an unruly middle. What she didn't remember was the disappointed look in Jo and Jack's eyes as their rare chance at a romantic meal for two was interuppted.
"But...but" Mary-Lou stuttered
But Joey held up a hand to silence her, a sad look in her compassionate eyes "there is more and worse to come" she said in her beautiful voice.

Mary Lou felt sick when she remembered how worried they had been over Phil.
"But I only wanted to help, I thought you needed a rest"
"No Mary Lou, you thought you knew better that I did" said Joey, sorrow in her golden voice, "And even that event did not bring home to you what type of person you were becoming. Watch this"

Slowly the scene changed. This time Mary Lou recognised herself stood outside the San talking to a younger, but tired and worried looking Joey.

"Well I'm glad you have been able to leave Phil for a few hours " She heard herself saying "Come to the school, the prefects would love to have you to tea, and you can help decide what to do about the middles latest, and about the end of term. It will do you good to fill your head with somthing else, and we have seen so little of you recently"

Mary Lou recognised the brisk tones she often used to show that she would brook no arguement, but as she looked, she saw how tired and grey Joey looked, how she spoke very little to Mary Lou as they walked back to the school, and how there was longing in Joey's eyes as she walked past her house, where she obviously longed to be.

"Why didn't you say somthing?" she asked Jack and Joey

Mary-Lou tried to argue this, but then the scene changed again to a funeral.  'What's this, who died' asked Mary-Lou turning pale.

'Our littlest girl, our twelfth child, Emilia, she died when she was only a few days old, said Joey sadly, her eyes filling with tears.  'You never even bothered to ask.'

Suddenly a swirling mist rose up, hiding Jo from sight. "Jo, Jo where are you?" whimpered Mary- Lou. "Don't leave me, I'm scared".
An indistinct figure drifted in and out of Mary-Lou's focus and a booming voice rang out "Mary-Lou, great as your crimes have been, none were so great as that against me!"
"Fa..Father."Mary-Lou stuttered "Is that you?"
Mary-Lou gasped as the face of her father, barely recognisable from dusty photographs and half-forgotten memories appeared in front of her. “Yes, Mary-Lou, it is I” and as his breath heavy with the stench of rotted flesh caressed her cheek like icy fingers from the grave, Mary-Lou stepped back and looked up into the hollow voids of her father’s eyes. A single blood-freezing scream came hurtling from Mary-Lou’s terrified lips….

'Mary-ou, wake up, if you don' stop that sreaming i shall slap you!' yelled Matey over the noise of Mary-lous pettrified screaming. Mary-lou obeyed and stiffled her screams so that she could coherenatly speak to them,
'W-what happened, i've hadthis terrible, terrible time, my father was there, Jo and Jack were there, they said i hlped kill Emilia...it was awful!' wailed a very dstressed Mary-Lou.
'What an earth are you talking about child, Jack and Jo only have six children, they havn't got a child called Emilia, much less a dead one! Pull yourself together Mary-Lou. You fainted thats all during Kester Bellevers speech, Jo and I had to carry you out, look here she is with some coffee!' said Matey to the eleven year old Marylou.

Matey had left Mary Lou alone with Joey. Joey turned to Mary Lou who was sipping the milky coffee and trying to regain her equilibirium. (sp?)
"Well Mary Lou, it appears that you have a choice to make."

Mary Lou looked up, her fear returning, "You mean it was real after all?"
"I mean that it can be real, or you can listen to you final visitor and let another reality take place"
"My final visitor..."
"Oh yes, you will hear what your father has to say."

The cubicle curtain shifted slightly and when Mary Lou turned she saw her Father standing there. This time there was no smell, no empty voids, no icy fingers, her father looked as if he had stepped straight from the photograph besides her mothers breath.

Mary Lou gulped

Mr Trewlawney spoke

Suddenly Mary-Lou felt a surge of anger welling up inside.  What right had her father to appear now, after all these years, to lecture her?  Where had he been when she was growing up?  Ever since he died, she had been taught to idolize him for his strength of character, his bravery and his leadership - yet now here he was, criticizing her for trying to emulate those same characteristics!

Well, Mary-Lou decided firmly, he'd gone off to risk his life in the Amazon with total disregard for the small daughter he left behind, so he could just butt out now.  This was none of his business.  It was no surprise if she'd turned out a forceful young woman - just look at how weak her mother had been.  If someone hadn't taken charge, they'd probably have ended up as paupers.  It was all very well for the Chalet girls to deride her resourcefulness as interference.  What did they know of absent fathers, weak mothers and broken homes?  She, Mary-Lou, had survived all that - without the help of a handful of siblings - and if she had occasionally treated staff as her equals, that was hardly a surprise.  Honestly, what world were the Chalet girls living in to always be so childlike and unquestioning of their elders?

Mary- lou fell to the ground, her hair splayed about around her face, her arms and legs sprawled apart as if she had been thrown a great distance. Jack performed a lightning fast examination and rose to face the anxious crowd.
'I'm afraid it's true,' he said, his bottom lip trembling, 'she really has gone. After so long, so many malicious attempts to bump her off, she's finally kicked the bucket.'
Another voice piped up, 'really Jack,' it was Jo, 'a mixed metaphor? You should know better than that! Now,' Jo was brisk and business-like, ignoring the tears pouring down her husband's face, 'I suggest we all take it in turns to carry Mary-Lou to the San, as there's no way we can bring an ambulance up here. Then one of the doctors can do a post-mortem, even though they'll be scarcely qualified being lung specialists and all. Well, what are you all staring at?' Jo demanded of the astonished gathering, 'Oh, now you can't pretend you're sorry! You, Perri, you aren't even really here, and you know this girl is practically the cause of your death!' Jo appealed to various members of the group, 'and you Vi, you can stop that hysterical wailing at once. Why, just before I saw you walk straight past Mary-Lou without a word! As for myself,' Jo added, turning away and lowering her voice, 'well, she always stole my thunder. Maybe I'll be able to get back to my Reunion now, instead of being overlooked, yet again!' With which highly unreasonable statement, Jo flung her black cape around her shoulders, hopped onto her broomstick and zoomed away, cackling evilly.

(I'm so sorry, I've made it into a ridiculous farce again.)

Your wish, oh exulted Head Girl, is my command...

Jo, having wafted about in the ether for a bit, was soon bored with simple poltergeist activity at the San, and decided to drop by and see Hilda.  "I'm sure she won't mind," Jo mused "I was always popping in before".  With Jo, to think was to act, and she promptly sped over to the school, and the Head's annexe there.  Sadly, Hilda was at that point indulging in a long hot shower, and was not best pleased by Jo's choosing to appear in the bathroom!

(If you can't beat them, join them!)

Reeling drunkenly, Hilda flew back out of the cistern and over to Nell Wilson. Weaving her astral form sinuously around Nell's ah additional assets she suddenly pulled taut.
Nell Wilson shot up out of the bath, turned a terrible greenish-grey colour, and expired!

Almost before she/he had time to react to the fact she/he was dead she/he was assaulted from all sides by Hilda.

"all these years I've thought you a woman, why the **** didn't you tell me!" screeched the vengeful spirit.

"N-n-now Hilda, calm down!" Nell's voice was curiously high for some reason!

Title: Re: a second reunion

"You idiot!" screeched Hilda, "you should have told me! All these years of fending off your advances because I don't do women! If you'd only told me!"

"Now, now Hilda, that's enough" the spirit of Joey tried to calm the two co-heads.

"You can push off Joey Maynard!" Hilda's deep and low voice seemed to have been left elsewhere in the ether. "You've been getting some these past 20 years! I haven't!" with that she grabbed hold of Nell by a certain part of his anatomy and dragged him into the bedroom. "We've got twenty years to make up!"

Joey goggled at Hilda.  "Hilda Annersley, do you honestly mean to say that you never shacked up with Nell before this?  We were all absolutely sure you two were an item."

The Abbess's wraith glared vindictively at her erstwhile pupil.  "Please don't be so vulgar, Josephine.  I would never be so unprofessional as to sleep with a colleague."  She hovered for a moment in mid-air.  "At least, not while I was alive!"  She emitted an evil cackle and whooshed out of the room with Nell in tow.

Sorry, it's originally a minicom/ textphone abbreviation for 'go ahead.' you use it every time you've finished your say and to let the other person know they can reply. Minicom interruptions just don't work- they're liable to turn into gobbledegook! I thought people might know GA as many other minicomisms have translated into general internet/ txt usage.

LOL. Some of the recent clangers in exams included the Japanese Army bombing Pearl Harbour, which occurred alternatively in 1940 and 1942, depending on which universe you are in. It wouldn't be so bad if they were secondary students, but they're first year uni and sometime the latter year ones are even worse. I just failed an essay on Newton, which was meant to examine why he was so highly regarded in the 18c. The essay didn't even have any contemporary commentary on Newton, his works etc. It opened with 'Newton was a genuis' and went rapidly downhill after that. And this was from a 2nd year student. It can get frustrating at times, can't it ???

In my MA year at uni I helped out a *final year* student who didn't know the first thing about how to structure and write an essay. As for putting decent books into a bibliography, forget it! I believe one of the tutors was quite rude about it and I could see why. Because of that, when I was teaching in secondary I was always very fussy that I *did* explicitly teach essay technique, since I don't believe it was particularly well taught to my generation at school.

Essay technique was taught when I was at school (early 90s- that makes me feel old!) but has steadily declined since I've been teaching uni- past five years. Secondary school here in Victoria at least has become a sausage factory where students have to finish school with decent enough marks to get into uni: even if they do not want to go. And it has turned into that here at uni. We are simply moving from one piece of assessment to the next with no opportunity to teach them anything about technique, documentary skills etc. I've just got a 2nd year piece who has absolutely no idea about primary and secondary sources AND she completed a first year sequence in history where she should have learnt about it. >:(

Oh it/s the same in the UK. And kids never seem to grasp the idea of primary secondary sources in any case. Or you think they do and three years later they've forgotten all they ever knew about it. The other difficult one is chronology!!! I understand it, but I hate teaching it as it's so mathematical and maths is *not* my strong point. If you're Australian, you're right. I was in Victoria (Dandenong) between 1990 and 1992, and much though I hate to admit it, most of what  I now know about SPAG/ GAPS and, to an extent, essay writing can be dated to those years.

I was never taught how to write an essay, which put me at a bit of a disadvantage, as it tended to be assumed that everyone knew how to write essays at my secondary school. Grrr!

Title: Re: a second reunion
Post by Lisa_T on Aug 26th, 2003, 12:25am
That'd be par for the course, Vikki. Especially if you went to a grammar. Comps are sometimes more on the ball about it- they *have* to be as it's mixed ability, and with league tables and all, you do all you can to help those kids get the grades. Not for them, oh dear no! For the school!

As you can imagine, whilst I do love kids and teaching per se, in other ways even just a year's experience has made me rather cynical. Sad, really.

It should be taught then. But students are being taught the wrong method: ie, being told what to write by the teachers, without actually going through the learning process of trial and error and having a firm grounding in the all basics. IMHO students are finishing uni now with the same skills that they were expected to have acquired by the end of secondary school in the past.

Lisa, yes it was a grammar! I think most of the other kids may have been taught essay writing at primary school, but my primary school obviously didn't feel it to be a neccessary skill! ::)

Title: Re: a second reunion
Post by Lisa_T on Aug 26th, 2003, 12:37am
That really annoys me. I think there's still too much of the idea that bright kids will be fine by themselves, and obviously all the disability legislation has led to a greater emphasis on meeting the needs of SEN kids. Personally, I think bright kids should be labelled as 'additional needs' and catered for accordingly. Again, this does happen in comps through the Gifted and Talented scheme (otherwise known as G&T  ;)) but there are obviously greater difficulties in a grammar school environment, where *everyone* is arguably G&T to some extent.

I do agree with what you are saying. This summer I marked 710 GCSE English Literature scripts. Very few of the candidates could wrtie an essay. Even fewer could write a sentence, and as for spelling and punctuation, forget them!
And these kids have had 11 years of education.

I'm just very very grateful that I went to an old-fashioned Girls' High School before the trendy theorists got their hands on education, and we had to learn our grammar, spelling and punctuation.  I may be an old pedant, but ........

Title: Re: a second reunion
Post by Kathryn on Aug 26th, 2003, 8:54am
But grammar, spelling, punctuation all form the basis of a sentence and sentences form paragraphs and paragraphs form essays. So it shouldn't be too much to ask or to expect those things within an essay, should it?
And with students who don't have the firm basics of writing we are meant to teach them how to interpret documents, formulate their own arguments and present it in a coherent fashion. We're lucky if we get beyond them recognising the differences between primary and secondary texts. And that still isn't guaranteed at third year.
*piles of marking awaiting*

A major part of the problem today is that everyone is flooded with poor language by all the media. They don't hear or read enough of the good stuff to be able to tell the difference or to learn by example.

They speak and write in a sort of code. For example, I was told this year in many, many scripts, that the First World War was 'a scary place to be'. The question asked them to to describe and analyse the emotions felt by two war poets. Horror, pity, grief, anger - none were recognised, but they could recognise the lesser-spotted simile at  twenty paces.I'm just an old cynic, but I do feel that it's about time we rescued our language before we lose it.

agggghh! Worse and worse. I think general English is a problem. The pervasive swearing contributes too- kids just automatically reach for one of a dozen swear words to express their feelings rather than attempting to expand their own vocab. Yes I *know* I sound like one of EBD's rants against slang as delivered by the Abbess, but I happen to agree with her on that. This then understandably leads on to affecting every aspect of written work. And even 'children's reading' now isn't much, Harry Potter excepted. Especially if you compare it to the complexity of many of the GO writers... which of course explains why all of *us* on this board are such high achievers  ;D ;)

Unhappily Weighthingychers was taken by Mlle de Lachennais, who proceeded first to drown the insides of Con and Margot with coffee- minus the obligatory blanket of whipped cream- and then dragged them off climbing to the highest alp she could find. Not surprisingly, both Con and Margot expired from heart attacks shortly after attaining the summit, and Mlle, thinking that that was nice to them, to die in such a convenient spot. promptly disposed of them down a handy crevasse. She then blithely returned to school.

She marched up to Madge in the study, and found her in the middle of a violent argument with the ghostly Head over who had rightful ownership of the Annexe. Being the good little nun that she was, Robin overrode all Madge's protests, fished out one of those handy tranquiliser things that Cs people always carry, and knocked Madge out quite handily. And the fact that all those cubicles in the dormitories had their pretty curtains replaced by solid plaster walls, which were all painted the blandest, most boring shades of grey and magnolia imaginable. In addition to that, each little -'cell' I suppose we should now call them- had a door that locked. The key was given to the dormitory prefect each night and woe betide her if she then forgot to return them to Matey, who secretly relished the new state of affairs.

However, they were also provided with a jug of that icy cold mountain water last thing at night before bed, and a huge basin. The dormitories were unheated and unlighted, and the girls, in addition to their normal dormitory tasks, now also found themselves trying to wash and dress themselves in the dark. Robin decreed that it was the best way to train them out of their vain ways! The pupils were getting *very* annoyed with the way the school was now being run. They had tried to remove the ghosts of the mistresses but had found thid impossible. They had then tried to modify their new uniforms and sleeping arrangements but this had been proven impossible as well as they were constantly watched by OOAOML/Jo/Madge et al. They found sleeping in their cells very unpleasant (Matron had gone as far as to put bars across the windows and alarms and sensors in the cells so the girls couldn't move), in fact what had been a very well respected school had been turned into the Chalet School Prison...

Madge was so impressed with the new arrangements (she had always wanted the CS run this way) that she put an add in the Prison News Weekly and advertised for some warders I mean staff whoops... Madge felt that she needed some more staff that the girls could actually see and employed Jim Fenner as the new Head Teacher and Yvonne Atkins as the new Matron. Madge hadn't actually discussed her plans with Matey so she cunningly gave her a large glass of hot milk which contained a lethal dose of mercury...

Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) Matey loathed hot milk as much as any of her charges, which may have explained her sadistic delight in forcing it into them. Consequently, after thanking Madge profusely for her concern, she disposed of the hot milk into the balcony flower garden.
