Title: Santa in July? Santa in July. (Real Chalet School)
Post by Lesley on Dec 1st, 2003, 12:59am
Hi everyone! This is an idea I've had for a sort of 'Christmas Special' for Real CS - I'll be posting on and off - though not as intensely as for original! Will be finished before Christmas! BTW I couldn't actually write this until Rachael had posted her last bits - weird eh? (With thanks to KB for info!)

It was the final week of Term Two at the Real Chalet School, the 1st of July, when Madge Russell called her Deputy Head and Senior Mistress to her Study for a conference.

“This is really just to let both of you know that I intend to announce my resignation as Headmistress of the Real Chalet School during assembly tomorrow,” she began, smiling at both Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson, “You will be Head and Deputy effective immediately.”

“Earlier than you anticipated, isn’t it, Madge?” Miss Annersley asked softly,

“Yes, but there was no reason for me to delay the announcement, Hilda. You’ve proven over the last four months that you are fully recovered and I know that you will take over the reins without any difficulty.”

“That’s good to hear,” Miss Wilson smiled, “It won’t interfere with our plans for the coming holidays though will it, Hilda?” She looked toward her friend with a little concern.

“No Nell, we’ll be away for ten days, but back six days before the start of the next term. That should be ample time for us to arrange things!” Hilda Annersley smiled across at Madge Russell, “I should like to clarify a few points though Madge,” she continued, “If you’d prefer it to be in private Nell can leave us!”

Nell Wilson looked thoroughly disgruntled at that suggestion!

Madge Russell noticed and smiled, “Hilda, you and Nell work as a team, whatever you have to say, just say it!”

Miss Annersley nodded, “Madge, I appreciate that this School reports to a Board - after all both Nell and I are Directors - and I know that your capital started the School. But I must insist on autonomy if I am to be Headmistress. By that I mean that I,” she stopped, smiling at her partner, “we, have control over all appointments and dismissals of teaching and domestic Staff, and have final say in the acceptance or not of any pupils. I cannot accept this position if my every move is to be second guessed by yourself or other Board Members.” Miss Annersley smiled to relieve the sting in her words.

Madge Russell returned the smile, “Hilda, as I said before, you are most fitted for this role, I trust your judgement. I will have my hands full with being the Chief Executive of the Real Chalet School Board. I will not interfere.”

After talking about a few other matters the meeting broke up. Miss Wilson followed Miss Annersley into the Deputy Head’s Study,

“Congratulations, Hilda,” she said softly, “good to see the autocrat is back!” she grinned.

Miss Annersley smiled over at her friend, “have you arranged transport for the day after tomorrow?”

Miss Wilson nodded, “Yes, it’s being delivered tonight, so I’ll have a chance to practice before we head off to the mountains! Oh, and before I forget, Alison asked if we could join the Prefects for tea this afternoon, I said we’d be along about half three.”

“No problem Nell, we’ll need to finalise arrangements with the girls anyway. See you later.”

Later that afternoon Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson walked over to the Prefects’ Room, they were immediately made welcome and given tea and cakes. Miss Annersley looked around, smiling,

“Well I suppose you want some information about where we are going?” she asked with a twinkle,

“Of course we do, Miss Annersley, all you’ve told us is to pack for the cold,” this from Carol,

“Which has actually meant we’ve had to buy for the cold!” Sue Travis, the editor of the Chaletian put in, “it’s a good thing we could all go shopping with Miss Bruce and Miss Brown, last weekend!”

Miss Annersley’s smile grew wider, “Nell?”

Miss Wilson grinned, “We’re going skiing girls!” she said, “Place called Mt Hotham, it’s about 220 miles North of Melbourne, and we travel via the Hume Highway to Wangaratta then onto the Great Alpine Road direct to the resort. We’ve hired a minibus so we can please ourselves how long it takes. And as I’m probably going to be doing most of the driving it’ll be in easy stages!”

“We will be able to hire any equipment needed at the resort. Obviously they have skiing equipment, but if any of you want to try out snow boarding or any of these other ‘new’ sports they’ll be available as well.” Miss Annersley continued, “and I should tell you girls, as you are all over 18 neither Miss Wilson nor I intend to nursemaid you!”

At these words the Prefects all exchanged smiles.

“We’ve hired a chalet while there,” Nell Wilson smiled at the word, “it sleeps 18 and has 6 bedrooms, so you may divide them off as you please but remember to leave one room for the pair of us!”

The talk continued for some time before Miss Annersley, with an eye to the clock and the amount of work she still had outstanding, stood up to leave.

“We hope to get a reasonably early start day after tomorrow,” she said, “if you can all be ready to go by 10am that’ll give us plenty of time for travelling. We must go now girls, there is a great deal of paperwork I must still tackle!”

“Oh yes!” Alison looked as though she had just remembered something, “We nearly forgot! Congratulations on becoming Head once more, Miss Annersley, and for being Deputy Head, Miss Wilson. Madame is very sweet, but it just didn’t feel like the School without the pair of you in charge!”

The rest of the Prefects added their congratulations before Hilda and Nell left. On the way back to Miss Annersley’s Study, Miss Wilson spoke,

“Hilda, how on Earth did they know? Madge isn’t announcing it until tomorrow. We’ve told no one except Ruth, and she’d not have said anything. Did Madge mention it to anyone?”

Miss Annersley shook her head, “she said she was going to keep it quiet, Nell. I think there’s only one way they can have found out and as soon as I’m in the Head’s Study I’ll be searching for those bugs! Our Prefects definitely have criminal tendencies. My one worry is that, as their Guardians will we be held responsible if they are ever caught?”

The autocrat is indeed back! Good on Hilda! And I love the idea of the Prefects bugging the Head's study.

*Well certainly not all of it, Carolyn!*

It was the day after Term Two had finished; most of the Real Chalet School pupils had now departed - the Board had managed to place nearly all those pupils who had transferred over from the original Chalet School the year before with adoptive families. Those remaining included only a small number - 26 in total - still awaiting final approval for families - they had all been invited to spend the holidays with Joey Maynard, Biddy Courvoisier and Hilary Graves. The kitchen staff had mostly departed with only a small number remaining to serve breakfast to the only remaining pupils - the fifteen girls who made up the Prefects. Once they had departed, scheduled for later that day,  the School was to be closed for a weeks worth of thorough cleaning.

In the cottage shared by the two Heads, Nell Wilson had finished loading her luggage into the trailer on the back of the minibus and was waiting for her friend to descend with her luggage. Hilda Annersley appeared moments later with a large rucksack on her back, she placed it in the trailer next to her friend’s and went back into the cottage.

“It’s only just after nine, Nell, they’ll be a while yet,” she said, “are you making coffee?”

Nell Wilson appeared, carrying two mugs, “yes, here,” she passed a mug across.

Hilda Annersley looked at her friend and smiled,

“What is it?” Nell Wilson asked,

“Oh, it’s just strange getting used to you having auburn hair again, Nell,” Hilda’s eyes were laughing as she watched Nell.

“Yes, I must admit I’ve not got used to it yet either! Still, after nearly a year that’s more than enough time for all the white to have grown out!” Miss Wilson looked across at the Head and smiled in turn, “I can’t get used to seeing the calm and dignified Headmistress of the Chalet School dressed in jeans and sweatshirt!”

“Headmistress of the Real Chalet School, Nell, the other one doesn’t exist!” Miss Annersley looked down at her apparel, “and the clothes are comfortable and functional, they do not appear to be out of place for the 21st century.”

Miss Wilson grinned, “No, Hilda, but it might have been more appropriate for you to have a different brand name emblazoned on the sweatshirt!”

“I’ve no idea why, Nell,” Hilda Annersley’s voice held more than a hint of amusement, “what’s wrong with ‘FCUK’ anyway?”

I'd always wondered what was going to happen to the girls out of school. I also love Miss Annersley's (faked?) innocence about the jumper. ;D

Pat and Rachael, I know you were only joking! It's just December's not a great time for me! I get a bit depressed because work is so chaotic all through the month, and by the time christmas comes I'm knackered! And I've just discovered that the General Manager at work doesn't want to let us close on Boxing Day!  >:( >:( It's okay for him! He doesn't have to work it!! I've done the last couple and we were dead both times, so it's not even like it's financially viable! Last year it cost them about three times as much in wages as we actually took!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! Don't mention it!  Re phone socket - if there's no one likely to come in, there's no one likely to ring!  If there isn't a phone in the bar, a length of extension cable is reasonably cheap!  You can get them with phone connectors already attached.

The journey to the ski resort took most of the day; Miss Wilson did most of the driving, especially once the snow line was reached, although Miss Annersley did take the wheel a few times to give her partner a break. While travelling the Prefects were checking through the papers for information about the projected snow fall.

“Lyn, what does it say in your paper?” This from Helen, “I know it’s a local one for Melbourne but it should still give us the info!”

Lyn White, fathoms deep in a story, had to be nudged awake, “Oh, sorry Helen,” she began to read, “Police still have no leads on the case of the armed robbery committed at the First National Bank on Tuesday. The three man gang reportedly stole over 3 million…” Her voice was silenced by Helen throwing a woolly hat at her.

“Not the headlines, dumbkopf! The weather reports for this Mt Hotham!” Helen suddenly stopped and flushed, seeing Miss Annersley watching her. The Head said nothing, just smiled. Carol took the paper and was able to report that the snow was thick on the ground - unusually so apparently, and more snow was forecast in a few days.

They arrived at the resort just as it was getting dark and swiftly found the chalet. The group quickly divided up into threes to take the rooms, Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson sharing one of the smaller rooms at the top of the chalet. After unpacking they looked around their accommodation; the downstairs was almost totally open plan, with a number of large, fur covered sofas around what appeared to be an open fire situated in the centre of the room - closer inspection found that it was a gas fire, but the effect was the same.

There was a large kitchen and a sauna, as well as a patio at the back with a barbeque - apparently a favourite pastime was to host a barbeque in the snow! The chalet was one of a number of holiday homes situated nearby, all within easy reach of the holiday village, with its shops, restaurants and hire shops. For the first night Miss Annersley announced that they would all be going for a meal in one of the larger restaurants - as a welcome for all of them.

“After tonight, though,” she said, smiling around at the girls, “If you wish to go somewhere, without Miss Wilson or myself, that’s fine. The only stipulation I would make is that none of you go off alone, but otherwise, well, you are adults, Nell and I have no intention of spoiling your fun!”

The meal was a great success, Alison, greatly daring, asked if the Heads’ minded if they had wine to drink, and Miss Annersley smiled and ordered a few bottles of both red and white. They all drank a toast to the next 10 days holiday. After the meal they all went along to the open air skating rink. Unfortunately, although none of the girls had drank to excess, the one or two glasses of alcohol they had each imbibed was enough to ensure that their balance was poor, and none of them could stay upright for long.

“Never mind, girls,” Miss Wilson sympathised from where she and her partner stood, easily keeping their balance on the ice skates, “the effects will wear off by tomorrow and you’ll know another time. Just remember to drink lots of water tonight!”

“We should have watched you two, Miss Wilson,” this from Louise, just after falling over for the third time, “after all you can only have drunk a very small amount and it’s had no effect!”

Both women smiled before heading out toward the centre of the rink, leaving the Prefects clinging to the hand rails, as they reached the middle Miss Annersley whispered into her friend’s ear,

“Nell, I’m sure I drank three glasses of wine, how about you?”

“The same, Hilda, but let’s not tell the girls that. It’s nice that they think we were sensible.”

“You mean rather than that we can tolerate more alcohol?” Hilda Annersley’s voice was amused, “Yes I thought that, too!”

Do I take it you don't like the advent drabbles? ;D

Lesley did that suggestion make you feel even worse than I did when some kind soul suggested that the advent drabbles  could all be written up later into full length drabbles?

(Quite possibly Carolyn!)

Over the next few days the group divided up to take part in the winter sports; to begin with everyone went skiing, but after the first day or two some of the girls decided to try out some of the other sports available. Hilda Annersley and Nell Wilson, by virtue of their many years spent in the Swiss Alps, found even those ski runs judged as difficult to be ridiculously easy. Their style and grace on the runs attracted comment and they found themselves being asked for tips and suggestions by a number of the other skiers.

On the third day the Heads were persuaded to try snow boarding. It was not a complete success. Miss Wilson, by virtue of her athletic build and the fact that she had become somewhat proficient at surfing, was able to translate these attributes to the snowboard. Keeping her balance well and beating most of the girls in terms of both speed and distance.

Miss Annersley however had not, yet, been persuaded to try surfing and, although she had completely regained all weight lost during the previous year, had always had a slim frame, an ectomorph rather than a mesomorph. An expert on skis, she found it extremely difficult to adapt to one board. Although encouraged by her partner and watched over by the girls, the Head kept finding more and more novel ways to fall over! This culminated in her totally losing control of the board at the top of a small rise and careering down towards a huge mound of snow.

Some of the Prefects kept pace with her, shouting instructions on how to slow down and, to be fair to Hilda, she did attempt to follow the shouted commands. Her forward momentum was too great though, five yards before the mound, in attempting to swerve, Miss Annersley and the board parted company, the board continuing its run to the bottom of the rise. Miss Annersley, deprived of the object allowing her to skim across the snow, ended up turning a complete somersault before landing on her back in the large snowdrift!

She lay there for a minute, unhurt though a little winded. As she lay there she became aware of the stifled laughter from the girls. Alison appeared to ask if she were alright. Miss Annersley looked at her Head Girl, Alison’s eyes were bright with unshed tears and she appeared to be biting the insides of her cheeks to prevent a grin from forming. The Head sat up and turned an expressionless face to look at the rest of the party, they were all in exactly the same situation!

“Exactly how many of you thought that was amusing?” Miss Annersley’s voice was also expressionless; the girls were prevented from answering by the appearance of Miss Wilson,

“Oh Hilda,” Miss Wilson’s voice was too innocent; “I’ve just had a couple of people on the phone offering you a job!”

Miss Annersley looked across in some puzzlement.

“Yes,” Nell Wilson was having extreme difficulty keeping a straight face, “One was from Hollywood - seems they need more stunt women for their latest Bond movie, and the other from Gerry Cottle’s Circus - he’s short a few clowns!”

The Head looked across at her friend in righteous indignation to be met with a broad grin. She stopped, looked around her again, and then her face split into a wide smile and she started laughing. The rest of the party joined in thankfully! Once the initial burst of laughing was over, some of the girls had helped Miss Annersley out of the drift, the Head then announced her retirement from snowboarding!

“Tomorrow Nell, how do you fancy skiing off-piste?” She asked softly as the friends made their way back to the chalet. “It will be a challenge to be away from the normal runs, and I‘d like to prove to myself that there are some winter sports at which I excel!”

*hysterical* Oh poor Hilda! Lesley, you have an absolute genius for putting the Head in the most un headmistressy of situations!

This reminds me of one of my brother's exploits when he tried to go coasting on Mt Buller in Oz. He went down the slope no probs- although very fast, as you'd expect. There was a hedge around the area with a hole in it. My brother sailed perfectly through the hole in the hedge and landed in a heap in the middle of the road next to the ski hire place. He was only 8 or 9 at the time and wailed for the next hour 'cos his toes were cold! ;D ;D

*Hope everything went OK for you Xanthe at the hospital.*

The next day, the two friends entered the resort ski instructors’ lodge to discover the best places to ski ‘off-piste’. The resort catered for the expert skier and ran a cable car further up the mountain to runs untouched by man. Only the best skiers were allowed access to the cable car and initially the staff were sceptical about the two women’s ability. One of the more experienced instructors however, had seen both of them skiing two days before and was able to reassure the rest as to their expertise. The journey in the cable car was taken along with a small group led by one of the younger instructors. The group, all reasonable skiers themselves, had never before experienced ‘off-piste’ skiing and the instructor planned to show them the correct methods of tackling this potentially very dangerous sport.

He invited the Heads to join the group, indicating that he would welcome their input, however Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson decided they would rather strike out on their own. At the top of the cable car run was a small but well equipped safety hut and another resort employee busy ensuring that all skiers had suitable equipment with them. He professed himself pleasantly surprised that the Heads were both carrying first aid boxes, torches and whistles. He also checked out their mobile phones to ensure they could receive a signal.

“Have you skied here before, ladies,” his soft Australian voice in complete contrast to the women’s obvious English accents,

“No, this is the first time we’ve visited Mt Hotham,” Miss Annersley smiled,

“We have though spent a great many years living in the Swiss Alps,” Miss Wilson replied.

“The Alps themselves?” the man sounded intrigued, “Now that’s somewhere I’d love to visit. Although I’ve heard it’s all getting commercialised now. My dream would have been to visit there back in the 1950’s - hardly any tourism then!”

“Funny you should say that!” Nell Wilson’s voice was very quiet and only her partner heard her.

After checking that the two women had maps showing locations of natural hazards and of safety huts to be used in the event of an emergency, the man turned his attention to the other party. Here he found he had to issue a great deal more equipment. Left alone the two friends decided that their first stop would be a long, downhill slope - and a race!

Starting together, both Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson sped down the pristine, powdery snow, negotiating trees, rocks and short jumps on the way. Although both excellent skiers, Miss Annersley proved, just slightly, to have the edge, and drew slightly ahead of her partner. As she reached the bottom of the run some 3 yards ahead of her partner she came to a stop and turned with a grin toward Miss Wilson. The Deputy Head looked across at her and held up one hand,

“Not one gloat from you, Hilda,” she ordered, “if I hear you gloating then I’ll be publishing a story on the CBB entitled ’The Headmistress and the Snowboard!’”

Miss Annersley looked at her friend and sighed, “you would, too!” she said softly, “Oh very well, I must say I think you’re being very unfair though!”

*More today!! I spent five and a half hours on the M25 today going nowhere - eventually gave up turned round and came back home - anyway as always - it inspired!!*

The Heads managed another three runs down the slope - travelling cross country to catch the cable car back up to the top each time. Miss Annersley managed to beat her friend twice more while on the third occasion they adjudged the result a dead heat. By then it was after one in the afternoon and they stopped to eat the packed lunch they both carried within the small rucksacks on their backs. They were discussing whether to change to cross country skiing while travelling on the cable car back to the top again when Miss Wilson suddenly stopped dead and stared out of the window toward the East.

“What is it, Nell?” Hilda Annersley sounded somewhat alarmed,

“Trouble!” her partner replied, “Look at the clouds over there, and the wind is rising. If I know my weather signs - and they’ll not have changed regardless of the continent - there’s a blizzard on the way, it’ll be here within the hour!”

Fifteen minutes later, as soon as the car came to a stop the two women hurried into the safety hut and relayed their concerns to the man there, the high winds were already making themselves felt,

“There are warnings of a blizzard later today, ladies,” he said slowly, “but nothing to say it will arrive so quickly.” He stopped, thinking, “You’ve lived in the Alps, you say?”

Miss Wilson nodded, “for more than half my life,” she said firmly, “I know my weather signs!”

The man nodded, “very well, I’ll take the chance. In situations like this we automatically recall all parties.” he said, “hopefully they can get back here in time to travel back down in the cable car, otherwise they can shelter in one of the huts. Other than yourselves there are two parties up here, the one you travelled up with, and a group of experienced skiers over on the ridge up there.” He pointed to a ridge, it looked exposed and free from any sort of shelter.

“Are you able to contact the parties?” Miss Annersley’s soft voice.

“I’ll try, ma’am,” the man smiled, he turned to the radio situated to one side and quickly contacted the leaders of both parties, giving them the message that severe weather was on its way and an immediate return to base was recommended. The men he spoke to were obviously professionals as they both acknowledged that they would be moving their parties instantly.

Less than twenty minutes later, some ten minutes before the hour prophesied by Nell, the blizzard arrived! Although not, yet, at full force, the swirling snow was enough to cause the cable car power supply to shut down, but the safety hut was warm and safe. However neither of the parties had yet arrived and the resort employee, Jack Simons by name, was getting worried. A call on the radio informed him that the group out on the ridge had reached one of the huts scattered across the mountain, and were prepared to wait out the storm there, Jack Simons was happy about that, however the silence from the other group worried him further. There was a sudden call put through on the radio, however the news was not all good, the ski instructor came on to say that two thirds of his party were safe in one of the huts but that three people were missing, the instructor also mentioned that he had managed to twist his ankle and could not ski.

“We’ll look for them.” Miss Annersley’s voice was firm and permitted no thought of refusal, she spoke briefly with the instructor, ascertaining that the three missing were in two separate locations, they checked the large map and found them easily. The two women started to prepare for the trip outside, thankful that the modern clothing was so much warmer and more waterproof than the clothing they had been used to in the past. Jack Simons stopped them momentarily,

“Look, ladies, you don’t need to do this,” he began,

“Who else is there, Jack?” Nell Wilson returned with a smile, “don’t worry, we’ve seen worse!”

The resort employee, aware that both women were far better skiers than he, nodded, he retrieved some emergency equipment for both women, including radio locators, so he could keep track of them, and radios. Once outside Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson travelled in silence, peering through the swirling snow that reduced visibility to only a few yards. The radios had small headsets that each woman wore so they could speak to and hear each other and Jack. He was able to guide them close to the locations detailed by the instructor.

“Nell, we will have to split up if we are to find these people quickly,” Miss Annersley’s voice suddenly sounded in Miss Wilson’s ear, “Mr Simons will be able to direct both of us,”

Miss Wilson agreed and the two women parted, each obeying the directions from Jack.

Some fifteen minutes later, with the storm now directly overhead, Miss Annersley suddenly came across one of the stragglers, he was unhurt but totally lost and extremely pleased to see her. She managed to indicate that he should follow her, and, listening to the directions being relayed via the radio, was able to guide her charge to the hut already occupied by the rest of his party. Inside, Miss Annersley found that the other two stragglers had also been found and had managed to get back, she looked around for her friend but couldn’t see her. One of the party came up to her,

“My ski had broken, your friend gave me hers, said she’d walk back,” the young man, he could only be 16 years old at most, swallowed nervously, “it wasn’t that far, she should be back soon.”

The Head nodded, a little alarmed, she contacted the man back at the cable car station, who confirmed that her friend had reported that she was walking back. He checked her locator and reassured Hilda that Miss Wilson was moving toward the hut. Miss Annersley waited by the door, then suddenly Jack Simons contacted her again, Nell wasn’t answering his calls…

*More later - have to go tidy house!*

At this news Hilda Annersley immediately prepared to go back out into the blizzard; one of the other skiers, a big, brash man, prevented her leaving the hut.

“Are you crazy, woman?” he boomed, “Visibility’s down to zero out there! If you go out we’ll be looking at two casualties rather than one. This is no time to try and be a hero!”

Hilda Annersley looked up at the man, her eyes piercing his as she said softly, “for her, I’d walk into Hell itself. Now release my arm and get out of my way.”

The man made to say something more, but the look from those eyes quelled him, he gulped and moved aside. Hilda looked around and saw the boy Nell had given her ski to, she beckoned him to her,

“I may need to find this hut quickly,” she said, “could you please stay just outside with a light and whistle. If you keep shining the red light it may pierce the blizzard and make it easier for me to find my way back. Blowing the whistle may give me some direction.”

The boy nodded and followed her outside, standing within the alcove of the door, slightly sheltered from the wind. Hilda nodded to him, smiling slightly, before pulling on her hood and goggles and preparing to enter the full force of the storm. The initial shock of entering the storm almost took her breath away, the wind was so fierce that Hilda realised immediately that there would be no point in calling - no sound was likely to travel more than a few inches. Pulling a small compass from her left sleeve, Hilda noted the location of the hut and then, after speaking to Jack, back at the cable car station, she set off into the storm. Within seconds it was no longer possible to see the hut behind her, and even the red light was very small and indistinct. Jack’s voice in her ear told her she was heading in the right direction and she slowly walked on - using her skis in the cross country style - moving first one then the other in a parody of a normal walking pattern, while her sticks were used to provide balance and a little additional push.

After some minutes, Jack’s voice told her that she was directly on top of Nell’s locator button and that her friend should be there! She looked around but saw nothing, thinking to check slightly further on, she walked a little further and her ski caught on something - it was the button! It had obviously been dropped or discarded. Hilda picked it up, looking from it to her surroundings, her spirits flagged, ‘where on Earth was Nell?’

*This is a Christmas story you know!!*

She looked all around her once more, only able to see clearly for a few yards, a little to her left a slight movement caught her eye and she saw that it was Nell Wilson lying there. With her heart pounding she reached her friend, Nell was awake, just, but there was a glazed look in her eyes. A wound on her left temple showed Hilda that her friend must have been hit by something. She knelt down and shook her friend,

“Nell, Nell wake up!” the command was shouted directly into Nell Wilson’s ear, she responded.

“Hello Hilda, tree branch hit me, I’ll be OK in a minute or two!” Nell Wilson’s eyes closed as she said this and she seemed prepared to sleep.

“Nell, you cannot sleep here, this storm is too fierce,” Hilda’s voice projected some of the urgency she felt and Nell Wilson attempted to respond, hauling herself to her knees before her strength gave out and she slumped back onto the snow.

“Later, Hilda,” she mumbled indistinctly, “just need to rest a while,”

Hilda Annersley tried shaking her friend again with no response, she also tried lifting her but realised that her strength was insufficient. There didn’t seem time to go back and ask for help - especially as she wasn’t sure how long it would take her to find the hut, while thinking this she was also, suddenly, aware that her link with Jack Simons had disappeared, she was on her own. Hilda discarded her skis and sticks and knelt beside Nell once more. Placing her mouth against her friend’s ear once more she spoke again, and this time her voice was as cold as the storm around them,

“Helena Margaret Wilson, stand up! I cannot carry you!”

For a moment she didn’t think it had worked, then Hilda noticed her friend’s eyes open, they appeared to be more alert, and she moved. Slinging her friend’s arm across her shoulders, Hilda helped Nell stand. Although extremely unsteady on her feet, Nell was awake enough to take just enough of her weight and allow Hilda to support her. The journey back to the hut was long and hard, Hilda thanked God that over the last six months she had concentrated on regaining and adding to her strength.

Although aware she would never have the physical strength of some, the Head had worked hard at her physical fitness, partly as a way of combating the mental stresses that had plagued her since her rescue from EBD. She considered that she had made a full recovery from those stresses, although she was not naïve enough to believe that they would never attack her again, but had continued her fitness on discovering that she enjoyed the exercise. She was exceptionally glad, now, that she had done so!

Nell was trying to talk to her, but Hilda, concentrating on her small compass to ascertain the correct direction, was only half listening. She suddenly looked across at her friend,

“What did you say?” she shouted, the storm making it impossible for her to communicate any other way,

“I said, did you know they have Father Christmas up here?” Nell’s voice was distinctly slurred and she became even more of a weight across the Head’s shoulders.

“Never mind that, Nell, walk. Otherwise we’ll neither of us live until Christmas!” Hilda replied grimly, her tone must have worked as Nell Wilson made another effort and was able to relieve some of the strain from her friend.

A few minutes later she realised, with relief, that she could see a small red light being swung in the storm. Heading toward the light the hut suddenly appeared, on seeing her, the boy dropped the lantern and hurried to help, moving to Nell’s other side and supporting her. They moved into the hut and the rest of the inhabitants looked on in silence as they placed Nell onto one of the small cots along one wall. Then, as though that was a signal, a number of the others rushed to help, providing blankets and hot drinks for both of them.

Hilda sat beside her friend’s cot, sipping some hot coffee, Nell Wilson, revived somewhat by the warmth and the drink, looked across at her,

“Hilda, I thought we’d agreed that you would not use that voice on me again!”

Hilda Annersley smiled slightly, “I cannot recall ever agreeing to that, Nell!” she said gently, “I think it was just your request. And anyway, I couldn’t think of any other way to get you to stand!”

Nell’s eyes closed in acknowledgement and she smiled, then a short while later she looked back at her friend,

“That’s the second time you’ve saved my life, Hilda.” she said mildly, “I’m not sure I like being this far in debt!”

Hilda looked deep into the grey eyes and spoke softly, “Nell, after all you did for me at the end of last year and the beginning of this, I would say you are still well in credit.”

*Next bit!*

Nell Wilson smiled again and lay back on her pillow, her eyes closed, Hilda Annersley sat, leaning against the cot. A sudden escalation of noise from near the front of the hut disturbed them both and they looked across to see two of the skiers having a furious discussion with the ski instructor. He was sat with his foot on a stool, attempting to contact Jack Simons via the radio. A slight noise from the cot caused Hilda to turn to her friend once more, Nell Wilson was looking over at the noise with interest, her gaze moved to her friend,

“I think, Hilda, that you are needed.” she nodded toward the three men before closing her eyes and sleeping.

After checking that someone could keep watch over Nell, Hilda Annersley walked over to the front of the hut. The three men were arguing loudly and did not see her arrive.

“Gentlemen,” Miss Annersley’s voice suddenly projected into the midst of the argument, they all three turned to look at her, “might I suggest, gentlemen, that instead of wasting time arguing about this situation, you start to do something practical to resolve it?” The tones, soft and low, but faintly ironical, would be recognised by generations of those that had attended the chalet school in the past. They had the desired effect; all three men stopped talking and flushed.

Miss Annersley turned to the first man, it was the same man that had attempted to stop her heading out to rescue Nell, “Sir, I believe the first thing that needs to be done is to ascertain exactly what supplies of food and drink we have available, it is possible that this storm will hold us trapped for some time.”

The man swallowed slightly, then nodded before moving into the hut to take an inventory. Hilda turned to the second man, an older man who introduced himself as a professor, he had been concerned about the health of the skiers.

“Well I would suggest you attempt to find out if there is anyone here with any medical or nursing skills, however obscure or out-dated,” Miss Annersley’s voice was soft, “we have two known casualties, my friend and the instructor here, any skills would be welcome.” The man stared into Miss Annersley’s impassive face for a few seconds before agreeing.

The Head turned to the Instructor, he was attempting to use the radio, “have you managed to contact Mr Simons?” she asked softly,

The man nodded, “I was trying to tell those two, they weren’t listening to me!” he smiled, “I think you have more experience at getting people to listen!”

Hilda smiled, “just a little!” she admitted, she took the headset from the instructor and listened intently for a short while, then, “Mr Simons, this is Hilda Annersley, we are all safe and well, we have some injuries but nothing, I think, that is likely to be serious. Are you able to say how long this storm will continue?”

A little later Miss Annersley was able to address the remainder of the party,

“This storm will abate overnight, and the cable car will be working by morning.” Her low tones reaching all parts of the hut, “We should be on our way down the mountain before midday!” She smiled as everyone cheered then continued, “we have plenty of provisions and two of our number have medical training,” she smiled at the two men that had obtained the information, “in fact, we may look upon this as just another part of the holiday experience!”

The rest of the company laughed at this and Miss Annersley rejoined her companion; Miss Wilson had been checked over by one of the women in the party, a Sister on an Intensive Care Unit, she had pronounced that her wound did not appear too serious and that there was no evidence of concussion. Indeed Miss Wilson had recovered sufficiently to be demanding to be allowed up! She lay back, grumbling, though when her friend threatened to let everyone at the School know that she had mentioned seeing Father Christmas!

*Here you go Abi!*

The following day, a little after eleven am. The cable car containing most of the trapped skiers, including Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson, delivered it’s cargo back to the resort. All the Prefects were waiting for the Heads and, as soon as they appeared, let out a cheer! Miss Annersley, her arm through her friend’s, supporting her, smiled at the girls,

“Did you receive information yesterday about our location?” she asked worriedly as she guided Miss Wilson to a seat.

Alison nodded, “One of the instructors told us early yesterday evening,” she said, “we were just starting to get worried about you!”

“He also told us what you did, Miss Annersley!” this from Carol, “You are both being hailed as heroines!”

“Rubbish!” The Head returned quickly, “We, both of us, did no more than I would expect of any of you. I’m certain the instructor was exaggerating!”

“I, most definitely, do not feel like a heroine!” This from Miss Wilson, she looked rather pale and was moving with extra care, “I’m sure that I have a headache far worse than anyone here…” she stopped suddenly to glance across at her partner, “well, far worse than all but one of you here, has ever experienced!” she amended.

On reaching their chalet, Miss Wilson took a couple of the painkillers prescribed for her by the resort doctor and went to bed. The two treatments appeared to be effective as, by early that evening she was up, feeling much better. Rather than go out into the resort that evening, the girls had bought in food to cook on the barbeque and had refused to allow either Head to help with preparation or cooking. A quiet but enjoyable evening ensued, the only grumble from Nell Wilson when her friend would not allow her any alcohol!

Later on, with most of the girls deciding to visit the resort entertainments, the two Heads sat, watching the flickering fire light in the centre of the room. Miss Wilson, her headache completely gone, turned to her friend,

“Hilda, about that Father Christmas thing,” she began,

Miss Annersley chuckled, “Don’t worry, Nell, I’ll not tell anyone. Even though I must admit letting Lesley and Rachael know is tempting - think what they could do with it in their next opus!”

Miss Wilson laughed, “no, it’s not that, what I was going to say was, I don’t think it was an hallucination. I’ve been remembering, and I’m sure that I saw him before I was hit on the head!”

The Head turned to regard her friend more closely, “Nell Wilson, are you telling me that you think you saw Father Christmas? I should tell you, first, he’s no longer called that - nowadays they call him Santa Claus, or just plain Santa, and second, have you forgotten where we are? This is Australia, Nell, and it’s the middle of July!”

Nell Wilson sighed, “I know all that, Hilda, but I also know what I saw. A tall man, very large, wearing a bright red, almost scarlet, ski suit. It had white fur trimming around the neck, sleeves and bottom of the coat. He wore black, high boots and had a huge white beard, on his head was a hood of red with the same white fur trim. Now if that wasn’t ‘Santa’ who was it? There was no one fitting that description in the hut!”

*Next!*

The question shelved for now, the following day saw Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson remain at the resort. The doctor had thoroughly examined Miss Wilson the day before and had advised that she refrain from any skiing for the next day or two. The two friends instead decided to explore the resort village. There seemed to be any number of people who never left the village! To begin with the women’s progress was slow due to the number of people that kept coming up to them to congratulate them for their parts in the rescue. Embarrassingly, as far as both of them were concerned, it seemed that a number of others shared the opinion of the Prefects.

In an attempt to dodge all the well-wishers, the two women found themselves in the ski instructors lodge once more. Here they were warmly welcomed and were able to ask after the young instructor who had hurt his ankle,

“It seems he has broken a small bone in the foot,” the experienced instructor - the one who had persuaded the others of the Heads’ expertise the day before - answered. “He’ll be off for a while, don’t suppose either of you would like a job?”

Both Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson smilingly shook their heads.

“Oh well, worth a try,” the man grinned, “How about me buying you both lunch then? It’s the least I can do, to thank you for your efforts yesterday.”

The Heads joined him in the select restaurant situated slightly off the more popular tourist section. Some of his colleagues also joined the party and the meal was very enjoyable, the men being good company. Afterwards they invited the two women to join them ten-pin bowling. As it was something neither woman had tried before, they accepted with some trepidation. It was with some surprise that they both enjoyed it, Nell Wilson quickly picking up the skills required and being an asset to her team. Hilda Annersley was not quite so good and the Chief Instructor, Tom, offered to coach her. She accepted and the pair of them moved to another lane.

The rest of the instructors had to return to work, they asked Nell Wilson to join them but she declined, saying that she wanted to look around the resort. A little later, while walking around one of the gift stores, she felt a touch on her arm,

“Miss Wilson?” it was the young boy from the day before, the one who had broken one of his skis, “Miss Wilson, I’d like you to meet my parents please,” The boy indicated a couple standing near the door of the shop. Nell went over to greet them.

“Thank you so much for what you did, Miss Wilson,” the boy’s mother began, “Sam told us that you gave him your ski, and then you were hurt!” Her eyes went to the livid bruise apparent on Nell’s temple. She shook Nell’s hand vigorously.

“Our Sam is a good skier,” the boy’s father continued, “But he says you are one of the best he has ever seen. Thank God you were there!”

Miss Wilson smiled and tried to shrug off their praise, they then invited her for a drink and, after considering for a short time, she accepted. In the small family bar, she joined the Masons, finding them a delightful family. The parents, Lyn and Bob only appeared to be in their mid-forties, and Sam was their youngest child. With surprise she realised that they looked on her as a contemporary - after all, her apparent age now was the same as theirs.

Much later that afternoon, long after the Masons had left, exchanging addresses and with their thanks still ringing in her ears, Miss Wilson sat, nursing a long drink of whiskey and soda. She was thinking deeply about her future and that of her partner.
