Title: Reg goes to Hollywood
Post by Esmeralda on Sep 6th, 2003, 9:37am
This came to me while I was in the bath, so I thought I would leave it with you to do as you will,

Reginald Entwhistle, gynecologist to the stars, sat in his plush Beverley Hills consulting rooms looking at a travel brochure.
He had fled to America some years previously after his fiancee had broken off their engagement, unable to bear the sympathetic looks of knowing strangers and the gloating of his enemies.
It was not a hard decision to make as his position as a doctor at the great Sanatorium in the Bernese Oberland had been made practically untenable by the fact that the head of the San was his ex fiancee’s father, and it soon became obvious that it had been the right decision.
His smouldering good looks had quickly made him a favourite with his female patients, as had his accidentally acquired reputation as a stud.
Reginald’s hurt and loneliness had made him easy prey to a certain insatiable lady when he arrived in town, and she had told her equally insatiable friends.
Reginald had slept with some of the worlds most beautiful and desired women, and made a fortune in the meantime, but as he looked at the picture of the Jungfrau which featured on the cover of his brochure, he could not help but yearn for the simpler life he had left behind.

Reg longed for the life he was going to have with Len, the san and his own family.

Surely when the Maynards knew how wealthy and important he was now, they'd realise that Len would be mad to throw away a second chance? After all, what woman could resist Reginald Entwistle, second in the US official list of 100 Most Desirable Men?

Meanwhile, back in Switzerland Con and Margot were looking through an American magazine that had been left in the San, and had got to Freudesheim by mistake. Suddenly they both pointed to a picture and shrieked in unison. Len, busy pouring tea, jumped and spilt it on the tray. 'What on earth is the matter?' she demanded in her best school teacher voice, 'You've made me spill tea all over the new tray cloth.'
'It's Reg!' gurgled Con
'He's secons in the top 100 men in America,' added Margot, through her giggles
'WHAT?' Len forgot the tea and snatched the magazine from her sister's hands.

Len looked at the picture in disbelief. Reg looked as young as ever, in fact he didn't look as if he had changed at all and reading in his biog how rich he was Len doubted that he had.
"Just think how rich you could have been" whispherd Con in awe.
"He would still be a prat though" remarked Margot scornfully.
Len just stared at the picture, painful memories being awakened by it.

Unaware that he was causing so much unrest in those he most wanted to impress, Reg picked up the phone and demanded the presence of his secretary in his office.
'Ah, Miss um ah Redmomd' he said in the special pompous voice he kept for those he saw as underlings. 'I am thinking of having a short holiday. I want you to look up flights to Switzerland and book me a suite in the most expensive hotel in Montreaux. I will leave here on Friday and stay in Montreaux until Sunday. My return flight will be the following Friday, I will look after my own accommadation from Monday to Friday.' Then with a wave of his hand he gestured her back to her own office.   After Miss Redmond left his office, Reg went to the window and looked out across Hollywood but he saw nothing of the view before him, in his minds eye he saw the mountains and pine woods of Switzerland, and heard the rushing of waterfalls and above it all a voice that had never left his thoughts. The voice he had last heard saying 'I can't marry you!'

That night after he had left his office he went straight back to his luxury apartment, he wanted to spend time on his own to perfect his plan.  'Not good enough' the words rang through his head, well he would show them, money is everything it opens all doors, he would amaze those Maynards with where he is now. His client list was bigger than Who's Who. He wouldn't even have to name them as patients just drop names in the conversation of parties and dinners he'd been to and best of all none had been to the precious Chalet School.

Realising he was working himself up into a state he took a shower and went to bed. Before he slept, he had another look through his brochure and the last picture he saw before he closed his eyes was a mountain stream rushing through pinewoods and across a mountain shelf.  Unfortunately this opened subconcious memories and in his dreams he was transported back to a day in Switzerland when he had happened upon Len Maynard whom he was trying to get close to and a group of girls from the school. Well happened upon was the words he used to the authorities at the school and his employers at the San - really he had been following Len when she was out of school and he was off duty, to try and engineer a situation like this.  More scenes flooded his subconcious.

The next morning Reg awoke fon a troubled sleep and decided he had made the right decision. He would go back to Switzerland, spend a long weekend in Montreaux then go up to the Gornetz Platz to let the Maynard family see how rich he had become.

The days flew past and finally he was on the plane to Switzerland.  Throughout the flight he could not help but be aware of the glances thrown at him by the ladies sitting around him but despite it all there was only one woman he wanted and that was Len Maynard.  To try and blot out the looks around him he closed his eyes and fell into a happy dream of Len falling into his arms when she saw him and of him taking her back to America with him.

Len Maynard, blissfully unaware of what was before her in the future was sitting in the Salon of her parents home with her mother and auntie Madge.  Madge was looking determined, Jo supremely happy and Len stunned.  Taking a deep breath Len tried to form words as it was obvious speech from her was wanted.  'W.. wh...why me? she finally managed to stutter.
'Because you are the right choice,' said Madge.
'Oh! My lamb!' Jo exclaimed. 'It's perfect. just the job you wanted.'
'But why me?' Len asked again. Thinking was it really the job she wanted.
'Hilda has wanted to retire for years,' said Madge. 'But I managed to persuade to stay as I could never get the right replacement and you know I made mistakes each time I made a hasty decision about staff. But now she is over seventy I need to find someone to replace her and that someone is you!''
'But what about Nancy and Kathie or Miss Derwent or Miss Moore? Len asked desperately.
'They aren't old girls of the school,' Madge replied firmly. 'No, Len I have made my mind up. You are the next Headmistress of the Chalet School.'
Making her excuses Len left the Salon to try and understand what was going on. Really Mamma and Aunt Madge were a formidable pair. Her argument about being too young had been met by Madge's calm 'I was even younger than you are now when I first started the school.' All her other arguments had been met by her mother and aunt with great calm. Sitting on her bed, Len reflected on the conversation of the last hour. Did she really want to be head of the school?

As she sat there, the resentment began to build up.  What was all this snobbery about "true" Old Girls that prevented Nancy Wilmot, originally a St Scholastika's girl, from taking on the headship when even as a teenager Len had been able to see that the Maths mistress was ideal for the job? Why must the Maynard/Bettany/Russell clan be at the centre of everything? The weight of expectation was just getting too much for her. Yes, Len loved her job - but her job was that of a teacher, not a Headmistress.  Why did Mamma and Auntie Madge insist on directing their children's future so closely?  Was the second generation to have no choice?  At least she'd managed to make them see sense about that marriage with Reg which her parents had been so keen on.
Her thoughts turned to the news about her ex-fiancé. Second most desirable man in America? She knew Con had been quite impressed with this, but honestly! After all she knew of Reg...
Suddenly she jumped to her feet and raced to the study, heading for the cupboard where the telephone directories were kept.

Len looked up a certain number in Geneva. Maybe it was about time that some things she knew about Reg came back to haunt him. She put through the call,
"I don't know if you remember me, Len Maynard? We met a long time ago because of a ...well lets just say we both had the same problem with a certain doctor. Ah you do remember...yes it is rather hard to forget isn't it. Did you realise..." The rest of this conversation was continued more quietly as Len realised that she was not ready to discuss those events with her family until she had decided what to do about the school.

Interesting!!  I might have known that Reg would end up getting a hard time of it again....not that I'm complaining .
