I really don't think I'm in the right frame of mind for SCS. I'd probably write something that involved Hilda, Mary, Dr Who and a session with S&T..
Why spoil it?

*I finally got home, in spite (or because) of KB hanging on kicking and screaming the whole way. I suppose she deterred any would-be harrassers ;D*

************************
Mary opened her eyes drowsily. Bed was so warm and cosy and safe- and she sat up with a jump and looked wildly around her.
“Ooooh!” came from her after a moment.
The door opened and Hilda put her head around it.  “Did you sleep well?” she asked cheerily, moving to pull the curtains back and let the bright Alpine sunshine stream into the room.
Mary nodded and looked curiously at her aunt. In an effort to look as if she was ‘off’ the Head had donned a very old, but very comfortable, tweed skirt and soft twin set, and although she was neat, she certainly did not resemble the elegant woman to whom Mary had already become accustomed. “Are you going somewhere?” she asked, rather fearfully.
“We are going somewhere!” Hilda returned impressively, and sat on the edge of the girl’s bed.
Mary looked at her warily. There was a glint in Hilda’s eye that she already knew meant something. “Are-are we going mountain climbing?” she gasped, mentioning the first suitably unorthodox activity she could think of that the surroundings would facilitate.
Hilda stared at her in surprise and burst into a peal of laughter. “Certainly not! If you’re that keen on mountaineering, I’ll certainly take you up sometime, and you’ll find that the girls go on rambles quite often, so either way you’ll get to know these peaks well! What made you think of such a thing?”
Mary went pink and sank back under her covers. “It was the look on your face,” she mumbled.
The Head laughed again and took pity on her. “Mrs Maynard- Auntie Jo- has invited us both over for English tea this afternoon, so you’ll meet her at long last. Do you like dogs, by the way?”
     Mary nodded eagerly.
“That’s good, as Auntie Jo as a very large and very affectionate St Bernard! He’s getting old now, but he’s as bouncy as ever, so be warned! As well as that, I believe that Felicity Maynard and her friends Lucy Peters and Jean Morrison have all been asked over later on, so you’ll get to meet some of your form-mates. How does that sound?”
     “Lovely!” Mary returned politely.
Hilda gave her a keen look, but decided to say no more. Instead, she rose to her feet. “I’m going to put the kettle and heat some crusty rolls for you,” she announced briskly, “so hurry and shower and changed. I’ll see you n the kitchen in twenty minutes.” She vanished and Mary looked gravely at the ceiling before flinging the covers back and jumping out of bed. She dressed quickly and neatly in a jumper and a pair of jeans, and tied her hair back in a long pony-tail. Like her aunt’s, it was very thick with a slight wave in it, and the rich brown was a charming colour.
Breakfast- or, more accurately, elevenses- passed off well, and Hilda sent the girl into the salon with a Josephine M. Bettany while she cleared up herself. Then they slipped out of the French window and headed for the gate that linked Freudesheim and the school.
They did not go unnoticed. “Who’s that with the Abbess?” Jack Lambert asked lazily from the pree’s corner.
Wanda von Eschenau shook her golden curls off her face and sat up too look. “Perhaps it is her neice?” she suggested.
“What neice?” mumbled Renata van Buren as she looked up from her German essay. “Can’t you lot let the poor Abbess have a day off without asking about the whys and wherefores!” She turned back to her book and her friends eyed her with surprise.
“I wonder how the kid will get on?” mused the Head Girl, her black head resting on one arm. “Wanda, Renata, I think we’d better warn the others to keep a weather eye lifting out for her.”
“Why?” asked Wanda, opening her violet eyes wide.
“You know what some of the kids can be like,” was all Jack would vouchsafe. She closed her eyes and put her head back to soak up the sun, and Wanda took the hint and said no more. However, the seed had been planted, and Mary would find the prefects staunch allies in the future.

OOH - fantastic!!

Loved the Lesley bit - please make sure there's a scene with her and Hilda!!

It's sooooo nice to see Hilda's softer side and some of her insecurities ...

Particularly liked your depiction of Nell!! LOL! I had a very vivid mental image of her taking some serious drags of her ciggie whilst pontificating ... Am trying to keep it out of my mind though because I don't like the idea of her being such an ardent smoker!!

*crosses fingers, hoping that Mary gets on with Felicity & Co but slightly apprehensive that there'll be  arocky start and she'll be labelled Head's Niece before Mary*

*************
Meanwhile, Joey Maynard was standing in her salon looking out for her guests. When she spotted them crossing the garden towards the house, she let out a screech that made Anna, her faithful factotum, jump violently, while Joey herself dashed out of the French window.
“Hilda! It’s good to have you back!” Joey flung herself affectionately on her old friend, and then stood back to look at Mary.
     “Good grief!” she ejaculated.
“Joey! I do wish you’d greet people in an orthodox manner!” the Head said severely, and Mary was startled to see Mrs Maynard colour a little, even as she grinned at Hilda. Joey then looked at Mary again, and gave her an apologetic smile.
“I’m really sorry, Mary. I didn’t mean to scare you out of ten years growth like that! I’m glad to meet you at last, my child! Now, I’m sure Len and Con have told you, but this place is ‘home’ to you for as long as you want it. Not much point having a ‘happy home’ if there’s no-one to make it happy, is there?” Joey paused to give Mary and wide smile.
Hilda glanced sympathetically at her neice. “You’ll get used to her in time, Mary. She’s not completely mad, though I admit it does rather look like it. Which reminds me, why did you goggle at this poor child like that, Josephine?”
Joey looked meek, although her black eyes were dancing. “Please, Miss, I was only surprised, that’s all!”
“H’mm,” was all the Head said to this, giving her friend a suspicious look. “Do go on.”
“I’d every intention of doing so. It’s incredible! Here, sit down. Anna’s getting the tea ready. Back in a sec!” and Joey vanished, seeming to the surprised Mary to be not so very much older than Len and Con. Hilda, seeing her dazed expression, suppressed a smile. Mary was certainly getting a real baptism of Joey!
That lady returned before very many minutes were up, with a peculiar expression on her face. She carried a small, rather worn piece of card, and stood in front of Mary for a moment, looking from the girl and back to the card.
     “What’s that?” Hilda demanded uneasily.
Joey gave her an impish grin. “Wouldn’t you like to know! Mary, look at this,” and with a wicked glance at the Head, Joey passed her ‘card’ over to the girl.

Mary looked at the photograph she held, and saw a young girl dressed in the fashions of the immediate pre- First World War era. The girl resembled herself to such an extent that the photo could almost have been a snap of Mary herself in costume- although in fact, Mary’s colouring was slightly darker than Hilda’s, but that did not show in the sepia-tinted picture.
Hilda was speechless. “Where did you get that?”
Joey grinned again. “Years and years ago. I don’t know what we were all doing, but we decided to pool snaps of ourselves as kids. I have snaps of Nell, Sally, Madge- which you’d expect- that one, and a few of people like Rosalie, and my own quartette. Uncanny, isn’t it?”
Her first surprise over, Hilda laughed. “Not really. Mary’s father and I looked very alike as children, and I believe that Mary’s mother was in fact a very distant cousin, although I never met her before she and my brother married. That’s right, isn’t it, Mary?”
Mary nodded. “Yes. Mummy told me once that she and Daddy were very distantly related.” She turned back towards Hilda. “Actually, Daddy always said I looked very like you. I think he said that he was glad he hadn’t given me ‘Hilda’ for a first name.”
Hilda looked puzzled. “I thought you had only the one Christian name?” she queried.
Her niece shook her head. “No. My name is really Mary Hilda.”
Hilda looked astonished, and Joey had to try very hard to suppress her giggles. “Hilda Mary, meet Mary Hilda,” she murmured. “It’s like Alice in Wonderland. Twiddledum and Twiddledee!”
“Really, Joey!” exclaimed the Head. “I thought you said something about tea?” she hinted.
“OK,OK,” Joey grumbled. “I’ll get your tea!” and she vanished to return with the huge trolley, still chuckling at the success of her witticism.
After tea, voices were heard in the garden, and Joey rose, her face lighting up. “Ah! Here they are!” as three girls of Mary’s age, led by a girl with bright blue eyes and silvery fair hair, fell in through the French window, all three giggling heartily.
“What’s the joke?” Joey asked as she kissed her fourth daughter.
Felicity opened her mouth to explain, caught sight of the Head on the settee, and promptly closed it again. “I don’t think I should tell you right now, Mamma,” she said primly.
Hilda smiled. “I suppose that means it’s something you don’t want me to know, even if it is off the record!” she remarked. “Come along, girls! Make yourself comfortable. We’re not in school now, you know!” and Felicity, Lucy and Jean, all of whom had known her from babyhood or nearly that, visibly relaxed.

the sort of cliff where you stand in the sunshine and look at the view and feel good.  Not all cliffs are for falling off.  that one was for waiting happily and I did!

And was rewarded by the second post.  You've got their characters really well and it sounded as if you had lifted Joey straight out of one of the original books - it's her to a T.

*tries to decide which is scarier- Rachel drunk or Rachel sober..*
Oh well, as a reward for your exemplary patience (!) here's a liddle bit more. But i did say 'liddle'!

Felicity looked curiously at Mary. “Hello,” she began, rather uncertainly. Felicity was a clannish young thing, and had kept very much to her own family and the other two members of her triumvirate throughout her school life.
Joey decided to step in, knowing that for the Head to introduce her neice could lead to all sorts of complications, and in addition place a burden of expectation on Felicity that her fourth daughter would be unwilling to realise. “Felicity, this is Mary Annersley. Yes,” she continued as she saw the eyes of the three girls facing her turn into a series of round Os, “she is a relation of Miss Annersley’s. Her neice, in fact. Now, the Head and I have something to discuss and we don’t want any schoolgirls getting in the way, so suppose to take Mary with you and scram!” Joey finished with a giggle, and Felicity grinned before indicating to Mary that they should go out into the garden.
Once in the garden of Freudesheim, conversation stalled.
“When did you get here?” Felicity asked at last, desperately trying to think of something to say.
“Two nights ago,” replied Mary, with equal politeness.
“Is this your first time in Switzerland?” Jean queried.
“Yes.”
“Are you coming to school with us?” Felicity asked curiously.
Mary nodded. “A-auntie Hilda said I might be in your form,” she admitted.
“That’ll be jolly!” Jean told her. “Ours is a nice form, if I do say so myself. “
“You won’t be able to say ‘Auntie Hilda’ in school,” Lucy said, speaking for the first time. Her tone was almost malicious, and her friends gazed at her in surprise.
Mary, too, eyed her. “I know that,” she said curtly. “I’ll have to say ‘Miss Annersley’ like the rest of you.” Her eyes met Felicity’s and that young lady shook her flaxen curls.
“’Course you will,” she agreed heartily. “It’s awfully hard to remember at first, but when you get a few nasty looks and fines, it soon helps you to remember!”
“That’s what comes of being a Maynard,” Lucy put in sarcastically.
Felicity turned on her. “What’s wrong with you, Luce?” she demanded. “You were fine earlier. Why’re you being so nasty and sarky all of a sudden?”
“None of your business!” flared Lucy. “I don’t know what I’m doing here, anyhow. I’m going back to school to find somewhere quiet!” and she stormed off, leaving Jean and Felicity to stare after her retreating back.
“I say!” exclaimed Jean. “Something really has gotten her goat. But never mind that now. We can sort her later,” and Jean exchanged a meaning look with Felicity, before attempting to steer the conversation back to Mary’s immediate future and what she could expect of life at the Chalet School.

Thank you Lisa - definitely jealousy there from Lucy Peters - wonder why. She obviously feels Mary's presence and relationship to Hilda threatens her somehow.

Very interesting!

Wondering whether Lucy's jealous that Mary might get closer to Felicity because they can both call the Head, Auntie Hilda ...

Silly girl!!

Careful, Vikki!  Some cultures believe that naming gives power.

Actually Lucy sounded premenstrual to me!

I've often wondered if the 'trouble with the middles' which occurs in nearly every book, was just a way of lightening the  stories or whether EBD realised it was probably hormonal.  Apparantly if women live together for any length of time, their cycles start to harmonise!

Oh yes - we've had this before somewhere on the board and I can definitely testify that it's true!!

Not only the boarding school thing but also 3-4 girls sharing student house .....

I'm not convinced that EBD dwelt on the whys and wherefores but I'm sure the general consensus is that 3rd/4th years aka Year 9/10s are "the worst" .... with hormones being a significant contributory factor!

EBD certainly had that age as being the worst, although she ever mentioned hormones.
According to the stuff I've read adolesence can continue til 25, doesn;t that make all you youngsters feel wonderful!!!!!
:-* ;)

I think the idea of all the middles troubles being down to hormonal issues sounds a pretty good theory! It was bad enough being around hundreds of stroppy girls at a day school - imagine not being able to get away from them ever!

Me too!!! Every time I've lived in a purely female house or flat, we have all ended up more or less synchronised - normally to whoever is on the pill!!  :-/
