Actually something weird did happen. I archived this, deleted the thread and started a new one. On returning to the index there was another one with two pages, but only one post, so I deleted that as this seemed to be working.

I actually added a post to that one you described as having only one post, and it still said there were two pages... :-/

Len sat up with a bang and gave a gasp. “What was that?” she wondered, shaking her head groggily. Then memory returned and she jumped out of bed so quickly that she fell over her slippers.
“Len! Aren’t you ready yet?” Con opened the door and goggled at her sister, lying sprawled on the floor. “What’s the matter now?” she asked resignedly, as Len sat up on the floor and fished one braid over her shoulder to look at it.
“It’s still there!” she said blankly.
Con rolled her eyes. “Yes, dear, it is. Hurry up! You know you’ve to take Auntie Hilda and Mary to the station.”
Len let her head fall back against the bed and gave vent to a deep groan. “So I do. Whew!” She expelled a long breath of relief.
Con eyed her again and then went to pull her to her feet. “Are you going to tell me what all this is about?” she demanded.
Len blushed and giggled. “I had the weirdest dream,” she explained as she pulled her dressing gown on and made her way to the kitchen. “I dreamt that I wanted to chop my hair off, but then remembered that Papa had asked me not to before he fell off that dangerous area near the Auberge- the bit that Bruno nearly disappeared over- so I just cut one off instead.”
Con giggled. “Poor Papa! Are you going to tell him?”
Len yawned. “Maybe. Sometime. Now I need coffee!”
Hilda turned from the sink at her words and smiled at her. Unlike her brevet nieces and her own niece, she was fully dressed. “I’m putting the kettle on now,” she told both girls firmly. “Go and sit down with Mary and have some toast. It’ll be ready in a moment.”
“Thanks, Auntie,” Len said appreciatively as she slid onto her seat beside Mary. “Sleep well?” she asked the girl with a grin.
Mary grinned back. The previous day had been a thoroughly enjoyable one for all of them, and she was genuinely beginning to feel at home with the Maynards and her aunt. “Like a log! In spite of all that chocolate last night,” she ended with a giggle.
Con laughed and reached for the butter. “I’m surprised Auntie Hilda let you,” she remarked. “You wouldn’t get away with it at school, let me tell you. Even if she didn’t tell you what she thought of you, Matey would- and give you a horrid dose into the bargain,” she finished with a rueful smile.
“More likely to be hot milk,” Hilda told her briskly. “Here’s your coffee, girls. Hurry and finish, now!”
“Aren’t you having something?” Len asked between bites.
“No. I was up earlier than the rest of you and made myself something then. Mary, my dear, will you ready to go once you’re dressed?”
Mary gulped her coffee and nodded. “I think so. I didn’t take much out of the bags,” she reminded her aunt.
“Very well. I’ll go and finish myself, then. As soon as possible, please, girls! We don’t want to miss that plane.”

Len tied her shoelaces and then collected her carkeys.
"Auntie Hilda! Are you ready?" she called.
"I am. Do you know when the next train is?" the Head asked, looking rather worried.
Len grinned. "You're not going by train."
Hilda gaped. "We're not?"
"Of course not!" Len returned as she hoisted a case. "Too much hassle, don't you think? Besides, Con and I haven't seen you for ages. We'll run you down the the aiport ourselves in the car, and stay with you 'til it's time to go. How does that sound?"
The anxious expression on Hilda's face disappeared. "Thank you, Len. That's very good of you. I'm just as glad to be spared that train journey. Mary, have you got all your cases?"

Sorry folks, not more... *winces at sound of outraged yowls and then switches aids off*
..cos I've been deserted by the the PBs. All of 'em. The annoying thing is that they've left me with the ideas, but not the inspiration to knit them together, if that makes sense. And I've sooo many drabbles and stories to write as well! Last count was:
-the fill in
-redheads aftermath
-this
-Emersons
and I'm still getting the occassional reminder from the Grainne PB that I said something about a short story.
Maybe that's the trouble- too many PBs spoils the brain and writing instincts! The only thing that's more annoying than not being able to write is wanting to write and being prevented from getting to a pen or PC...

:'( :'(

I'm really looking forward to seeing Mary settle down (or not!) at the school and can't help wondering what's going to happen when she gets into trouble and grey-blue eyes like steel meet grey-blue eyes like steel!!

Post by Lisa_T on Jan 8th, 2004, 8:44pm
Ok, I caught this PB again, you'll be glad to know. He might disappear once more, though...

Several hours later found Hilda and her neice safely on the plane, much to the former’s relief. She was always nervous until she and any charges were safely settled on whatever mode of transport was being utilised at that point- the natural result of years of alarms and excursions, as Joey Maynard had once pointed out.
As soon as Hilda had checked that Mary was comfortable and had everything she wanted, an awkward silence fell. This was practically the first time the two had been alone, and both found themselves at a loss for words.
Hilda shook herself mentally and spoke. “Have you travelled much in the past?” she queried.
“Not really,” returned Mary morosely. The changes to her life were now starting to sink in, and she was feeling very nervous about the future.
Her aunt glanced at her and realised how she was feeling. “Mary, you will be fine. I promise you, and you’ll find I’m known for keeping my word!” She smiled at the girl, who managed to smile back, if rather uncertainly.
“Can I ask you something?” Mary began tentatively, forgetting Len’s half-serious strictures on the use of ‘can’ for ‘may’.
“Certainly you may. What’s worrying you?”
“What’ll it be like? School, I mean?” Mary raised anxious blue-grey eyes to meet her aunt’s.
Hilda looked at her thoughtfully for a moment. “Well, for one thing, as you know, the Chalet School is a boarding school, so that will be different for you, won’t it? Which reminds me- would you prefer to sleep in a dormitory, or share the Annexe with me and live to some extent like a day pupil?”
“What’s the Annexe?” Mary asked, rather shyly.
Hilda laughed. “That’s what the girls call my suite of rooms,” she explained. “There’s a couple of bedrooms, a bathroom, and a small kitchenette- which I rarely use. Downstairs we have the salon and the study, as well as the school office, and on the floor above my bedrooms, there’s another small suite which is used by Miss Dene, my secretary, and Mlle de Lachennais, the Senior Mistress. You’ll meet them both in good time.”
Mary sat and considered. “So if I live in the annexe, it’ll be a bit like living at home?” she asked.
The Head nodded. “A little. Obviously, you would need to follow the school day, so you would only spend a few hours in the Annexe in the evening. However, that’s all to the good. I’m very busy the rest of the time- in fact, I suppose you could say that I’m ‘on call’ all the time, but I usually have a few hours to myself after Prayers. Otherwise, you’d find yourself alone much of the time, which isn’t desirable.”
“And what would it be like in the dormitories?” Mary wanted to know.
“If you choose to do that, you’ll be treated in every respect as another new girl, and you’ll be with the others all the time.” Hilda hesitated and then continued. “You may prefer that. But if you feel that you’d like more personal time with me, then I’d advise you to stay in the Annexe, for this first term at least. Otherwise, I’m afraid I’ll just be ‘the Abbess’ to you!” Hilda flashed a smile at her neice as she brought out her nickname, and Mary frankly gawped.
“Is that what they call you? Why?”
Hilda laughed outright. “I’ve been known to the girls as ‘the Abbess’ for more years than I care to remember, although I’m not sure that they know I know! As for why, I think it was probably my name in the first instance- a reference to St Hilda, who was Abbess of Whitby, but  then when I became Head, I suppose it stuck as being peculiarly apt!”
Mary grinned. “I see. Are you scary then?” she asked, with a hint of mischief.
Hilda laughed again. “I don’t think so. However, I do have a certain reputation, but I’m saying no more. The girls will tell you soon enough!” and Mary giggled as she caught the twinkle in her aunt’s eyes.
“So what would you like to do?” Hilda queried, returning to the original topic.

Phew! Just caught up on this and it's great Lisa! If those pesky bunnies wont co-operate try muttering "purple llamas" at them and see if they come scurrying back to protect their work!

Happily adds voice to the chant

A little more, although the bunny is being a bit obstinate again! Grr.

Mary grinned again. “I’ll stay with you, please.” Rather uncertainly, she put one hand on Hilda arm, and saw the Head’s warm smile cross her face as she took it.
“Very well then, that’s settled!”
Mary snuggled down and, worn out by the new experiences of the week, was soon asleep, her head falling onto Hilda’s shoulder. Hilda watched the sleeping girl, aware of a mixture of feelings. On the one hand, she was looking forward to having company in the evenings, and it would, as Claire Kennedy had pointed out, be pleasant to have a real blood relative nearby after so many years of brevet relationships. At the same time, since Mary had chosen to stay with her, Hilda realised that things would have to change. Her memory drifted back to the conversation she had had with her great friend and partner, Nell Wilson, on the day that she had received the phone call.
“Don’t let that soft heart of yours get in the way of your head,” Nell had advised. “If you take this child on, she will not be simply another new girl, you know. You’ll genuinely- emotionally as well as legally- be in loco parentis, with everything that that entails. Are you certain that you have the time and emotional energy for that? Don’t forget that your normal work cannot be allowed to suffer either.”
Another woman might have been insulted by this plain speaking, but Hilda Annersley had known Nell Wilson too long and too well to resent it, and she was grateful for her friend’s practical common sense. She settled herself more comfortably in the soft chair- Hilda’s slenderness meant that she had plenty of room in the otherwise cramped confines of airline seats- and began to revolve plans in her mind. Joey and Nell would both help, she knew. Furthermore, it was almost definite that Mary would be in the same form as Joey’s fourth daughter Felicity, who was a friendly soul. Hilda hoped that a ready-made friend and ‘cousin’ would help Mary to settle down happily in the school.

Love the way this is developing.
I think Mary had to be given the choice, she needs to feel that she has a home, and to gain some security after all that has happened to her, it might make it harder for her to settle, but if she was automatically put as a boarder than she may see it as rejection.

It might have been better for Mary to be a normal boarder, but who can blame her for wanting to stay with her aunt?  She's already been through a lot, and Hilda is the only person at the school who she knows, and she doesn't have a home waiting for her at the end of term.
I hope the bunny becomes all soft and cuddly and obliging again, Lisa.

Li-iiiiiiiiisa!  (said in pleading tones).  You are going to give us some more of this soon, aren't you?   :-*

As someone said earlier, it'll be interesting to see how Hilda copes if Mary gets into trouble.  In the books she rarely seems to get upset at having to tell people off, even if she then does unbend to be the kindly, forgiving headmistress, but I'm sure she'd feel unhappy if it were her own niece being the sinner on the carpet!

Oh dear, how unkind of me to wish that on them!  *giggle*

Also really interested in seeing more of this - I think we are all interested because EBD made such a big thing of the Senior Staff not having families - so they could be totally focused on the School. So seeing how Hilda copes when she has family and School together is intriguing - especially as she and Mary have already struck up such a good rapport.

Catherine, you have all my sympathy and then some. I hope it's not a confidence issue for you, though- it was for me, thanks to an idiot tutor, but just grit your teeth and get through the TP. You may even find that you will change your mind and end up loving it!  ;D
*sends lots of hugs Catherine's way*

Yes, yes, I know you want more, but I decided to be nice to Catherine first. Anyway, here you are...This is becoming episodic rather than particularly well knit, so you might like to think of this story as a series of vignettes rather than a coherent narrative. Unless I get a good idea, of course! ;D

**********
Hilda heaved a sigh of relief as the plane finally touched down in Basle, and she woke Mary gently.
“We’re here. Let’s go!”
Mary nodded and followed her aunt silently off the plane. The arrival in Basle had made Hilda feel calmer and less vulnerable; she was in a familiar place, and would be met by two of her closest friends and colleagues, Rosalie Dene and Nell Wilson, and soon she would be back at ‘home’ at the Chalet School. On the other hand, for Mary, the arrival in Switzerland was signalling the beginning of a whole new way of life, and with every step that brought them closer to the Gornetz Platz, her trepidation grew.
Hilda, tired from the journey, assumed that her niece was simply exhausted, and lead the girl unresisting to the arrivals lounge to collect the few bits of luggage that had flown with them from England. They had no sooner done so when a well-known voice was heard behind Hilda, and she swung to face the speaker.
“Hilda! At last! Have you got everything?” Nell Wilson gave her friend a warm embrace.
“Yes, I think so. Mary, my dear, meet my friend and co-Head, Miss Wilson. Nell, Mary Annersley.”
Mary, who had drawn very close to her aunt at this speech, looked warily up at the woman before her. She saw a woman slightly shorter than Hilda, with white-and-chestnut hair, and a face that looked stern in repose, although now she was smiling.
“Hello,” the girl managed, rather faintly.
Nell Wilson took Mary’s hand. “I’m very glad to see you, my dear. Now, since your aunt and I are great friends, and you’ll probably see more of me than you’d like, suppose you start off by calling me ‘Auntie Nell’ in private?” Nell finished with a grin and a wink, and Mary stared.
“O.K. Thanks,” she stammered. Privately, she was thinking that, at this rate, she was going from having very little family to a large one- even if it was mostly adopted!
Hilda’s eyes twinkled as she took in the dazed look in Mary’s face. “That’s very good of you Nell, but I rather think that Mary is feeling overwhelmed. You see, Len and Joey between them have offered to adopt Mary into their clan as well!”
Nell’s clear laughter rang out, but before she could say more, a slight fair woman came panting up to them.

“I’ve finally got the car parked,” she told them as she tried to regain her breath. “I didn’t know how much stuff you had, so I thought you’d appreciate it a little help.” Rosalie Dene paused and grinned at Hilda. “But it looks like you didn’t need me!” She then turned on the surprised Mary, and shook hands with her gravely.
“Well, it’s easy enough to guess who you are,” she assured the girl. “I’m glad to meet you, Mary, and I hope you’re glad to meet me?” she ended with a wide smile and Mary goggled at her.
“Rosalie, that’s enough,” Hilda said briskly. “Between the two of you, you’ve managed to reduce my poor niece into something resembling a startled goldfish! Nell, could you take this for me, please?” and she handed a small bag over to her co-Head, before putting her arm around Mary.
“Well, that makes a change,” Rosalie muttered to Nell as she propelled the trolley forward. “She turns us into worms, so isn’t it only fair that we should turn Mary into a goldfish?”
Nell spluttered, but looked reproachfully at the secretary. “How unkind, Rosalie! Now run along and drive that car back over to the rank. If you think that I can push this trolley all the way over to carpark where ever, you’ve another think coming, so trot!”
Rosalie grinned at both Heads and disappeared.

Thanks Lisa - for the response and the story!

I'm not sure what it is - I think it's a case of all my instincts telling me it's not for me.  I've got to do my TP as it's a case of letting people down if I don't but I hope the next few weeks go quickly.  I don't expect to hate it but I don't expect to end up loving it.  More a case of, yes I could do this but I don't like it enough to want a career in it.

Anyway, I'll stop trying to hijack your thread!

Enjoying the story.

*Apologies in advance to Lesley and Esmeralda. I couldn't resist! ;D*

Nell had insisted on Hilda taking the remainder of the weekend- the rest of Saturday and all day Sunday- ‘off’ and had refused to listen to any arguments to the contrary.
“What will the school do?” protested the Head.
Nell sniffed. “My dear Hilda, who do you think has been running the place in your absence? Nancy and Jeanne will do the official, and I’ll supervise. Don’t be insulting, please!”
“I didn’t mean it that way, as you well know!” Hilda retorted, although her cheeks were slightly flushed with embarrassment. “I know those two- and you- can run the school perfectly well. I’d no intention of implying otherwise! But you have to admit that they are not accustomed to doing so while I’m actually in residence, so to speak.”
“She has a point,” Rosalie admitted as she got up to dispense the coffee. They were safely back at the School, and Mary had been so tired that she had been bundled off to bed in short order. The two Heads and their secretary were enjoying some refreshments before they too departed bedwards.
“I don’t see how!” Nell snapped as she sipped her coffee.
Hilda fished out her lighter and cigarette case and tossed them to her friend.
“Have a cigarette, my dear, and you’ll feel better,” she advised with a smile.
Nell snorted but did as she was told, and sure enough, calmed down considerably under the soothing influence of tobacco and nicotine.
Rosalie placidly replaced her cup on her saucer and enlarged. “Hilda’s quite right, you know,” she began. “Nancy and Jeanne may be in charge, as you say, but can you seriously see anyone leaving Hilda to herself if it’s known she’s here? If it’s not one of the girls, it’ll be the staff, or Matey, or-“
“Joey and the rest of the Platz!” Nell finished for her sarcastically. “I’m sure Hilda is flattered that you think her so indispensable. I can’t think how you’ll all manage when she decides to retire!”
“That won’t be for some time yet!” Rosalie argued. “And Hilda, Nell has a point too, you know.”

Title: Re: A Real Neice at the Chalet School  #2
Post by Lisa_T on Today at 12:44am
Hilda stopped looking demure and glared at her secretary. “Thank you, Rosalie! I thought you were on my side! I’m here, I’m home, I’ll-“
“Spend tomorrow with Mary!” Rosalie told her firmly. “Honestly, Hilda! You’ve travelled all day today, you’ve been saddled with a child who happens to be your neice, and who needs all the support you can give, and as soon as you set foot in the school grounds, you become the autocratic Headmistress once more!”
“Hear, hear,” muttered Nell from behind a cloud of smoke. The cloud of smoke vanished abruptly as Nell waved her hand and sat up to look at her friend gravely. “You must remember, Hilda, what I said to you before. Mary isn’t just another new girl, and you must beware of slipping so completely into your-er- ‘autocratic Headmistress’ form that you forget that. She needs you considerably more than the School does at present, and for a short time, at least, I think you should take a back seat with the School administration and concentrate on your niece. Otherwise, you’ll have done what I warned you not to do- you will have acted instinctively by taking the child in without fully considering the consequences, for her or you, and that’s fair on neither of you.”
Hilda sat in silence, her face impassive, and played with her cup. Her friends looked at each other apprehensively, anxious that their plain speaking may have offended her. They need not have worried. She put her cup down and faced the other women squarely, a slight smile on her lips.
“Thank God Mary and I have such good friends! You’re both right. I’ll take tomorrow ‘off’ and warn Jeanne and Nancy that they may have to do more of the admin work in the next couple of weeks. Rosalie, you may tell Claire the same. Now I’m going to bed.” She rose and picked up her coat from where she had flung it and went to the door. Then she turned and grinned at them.
“Oh, when did I become an autocrat, I’d like to know?”
Nell and Rosalie exchanged furtively amused glances and Rosalie explained despite her obvious embarrassment. “It-it was that new nurse in the San.,” she confessed, looking a little shamefaced. “What’s her name?”
“Lesley Green,” supplied Nell.
“Thanks. Lesley saw you the other week when you went for tea with Helen Graves, and she asked who you were. Joey, of course, told her- dear knows with what commentary- and Lesley said something about you looking like the original autocratic headmistress. Jo thought it was funny and told me.”
“She would!” the autocrat said grimly, but with a twinkle. “I’ll tell her what I think of her. In the meantime, I’m going to bed. Don’t be too late, either of you, or you may find me more despotic and autocratic!” and with which, she left the room, leaving her friends to laugh at her final speech.

Wow! That's what my little sister is doing, except she is also specialising in Music as well. She is at Canterbury CCU, and has gone through some rough times over the last few weeks (including her closest ally on the course upping and leaving, telling her 10 minutes before his train was due to leave (they are housemates and live round the corner from the station) although I gather he is back now to see how it goes), but seems to have got back onto a more even keel now. I remember finding everything difficult on my PGCE course at this time of year - I still do, and this is my 5th year of teaching!! Have actually just spent a few weeks wondering if this is the career for me - you'd think I would know after all this time!!! 8oo I think I have itchy feet and need a change of job, rather than career!
Good luck with your TP, and if you ever want a chat or rant, you can PM me, or you could even speak to little sis - she is great to talk to, but is not a CS fan unfortunately, so not on here.
