Title: Real CS: An Epilogue or Lesley's Nemesis
Post by Elinor on Nov 19th, 2003, 8:14am
06 March 2004

It was a bright, crisp spring morning. Lesley Green  packed her overnight bag, grabbed the directions and headed out to her car. Minutes later, she was speading across the Kent countryside reflecting on how very fortunate she was. Sales of her book had surpassed expectations, she had very nearly completed her degree in Earth Sciences and there was a job waiting for her at the prestigious Chalet School at the beginning of the Australian school year. And today, well today was special. A big group of the CBBers were meeeting up in the Midlands. Initially referred to as The Gathering, it had swiftly become a Reunion / Farewell Party. Most of them had been involved in the rescue of Hilda Annersley from Elinor’s clutches and a good number of them had agreed to take up positions at the School, the great Sanatorium or working for the Board itself.

Joining the M25, Lesley eased into fifth gear and put her foot down. Amazing, she thought,  how little traffic there is on a weekend, much more relaxing than the weekday slog. Turning up the volume on the stereo, Eminem blasted out and Lesley sang along shamelessly. Suddenly, the radio’s traffic master cut across Marshall Mathers to inform those who were interested that there were long delays over the QEII Bridge and Tunnel. Won’t affect me, gloated Lesley, I’m headed for the M40 and she moved to flick the stereo back to CD function. Nothing happened and even as she tried again, the radio fell silent and she was accompanied only by the hum of the engine and the drone of traffic in the lanes beside her.

The next moment, anyone watching her would have seen her glance sharply in her rear view mirror, as though she was checking whether someone was in the backseat.
“Oh, you won’t find me there, Lesley”, a quiet voice spoke.
Lesley shook her head and swallowed hard as if to clear her ears.
“And you won’t be able to get rid of me like that”, again the quiet voice.
Lesley gripped the steering wheel harder. An eerie sense of foreboding enveloped her.
“Who are you?” she murmured.
“Oh, I think you recognise me, Lesley”
There was a sharp intake of breath. “No, it can’t be …”
“Why not, Lesley? Did you think you could leave me in a purgatory of your making?”
“Elinor?” Lesley forced herself to utter the name.
“The same … and very pleased to make your acquaintance, Lesley.” The voice lingered on the syllables of Lesley’s name with a malevolence which sent shivers down Lesley’s spine.
“Where are you?”
“In your mind, Lesley, can’t you tell?”
“I don’t understand? How can you be? You’re not real … or am I going mad?”
“So many questions and so little patience. All in good time, Lesley. After all, we have all the time in the world don’t we? But for now, be assured that you are not mad although you may soon wish you were …”
The sense of foreboding was replaced by an icy claw of fear which twisted in Lesley’s gut.
“You’re not real … you can’t be … you’re fictional, just a character!”
“Oh, but I’m far more than that, Lesley. You wrote about me, you outlined my personality, you gave me lines, you breathed life into me … oh, I’m real now Lesley, something for which I will be eternally grateful, dear Lesley”

Lesley shuddered and pulled on to the hard shoulder. What evil had she unleashed?
“How … how did you get out?”
“You’re the inventive one, Lesley. Can’t you guess?”
Silence.
“It was inspirational, Lesley, you’d have been so proud of me. You see, when Hilda Annersley was left stranded, there were only the two of us left. No distractions. No interruptions. I could do what I wanted, have my revenge as it were. And believe me, I did, Lesley. For ten perfect weeks I held that woman captive and I made her pay for every character that escaped into the real world, every step at which I was thwarted. Oh, I made her suffer. You couldn’t have written about her torments if you’d tried for a lifetime. She didn’t remain the dignified, unruffled woman that you were so pleased to describe. Oh no, I had her on her knees, begging me for mercy, pleading with me to stop …”
“I don’t want to hear it, Elinor!” Lesley had clapped her hands to her ears, but to no avail.
“But you don’t really have a choice, do you Lesley? Just as you left me with no choice when you left an escape route for her. She’s not the courageous, self-sacrificing woman who you all applaud, Lesley. She’d have swapped places with any one of you given half a chance. Quite a list of names she gave me, everyone of whom she would have betrayed for just a few seconds respite.”
Lesley looked up in disgust. “Hilda Annersley is the most heroic, altruistic person I’ve ever had the privilege to meet. I may not know the extent of the torments she endured at your hands but I do know she bore them as best she could and her recovery is testimony to her strength of character. You can’t take that away from her … or me.”
“Such defiance, Lesley, such loyalty – very touching.” Lesley recoiled from the sneering voice but it continued. “What you overlooked in your brilliant plan was that by breathing life into me, you no longer had full control.”
Lesley made as if to argue but was cut off. “Oh come now, Lesley, you’ve said yourself that it can be difficult to get your characters to do what you want. That was just the first stage. Then by giving me unrestricted access to a character as pure and flawless as Hilda Annersley, you fed my powers. Don’t you see, I thrived on her pain. I became stronger with her every cry and every prayer. I could feel it too, feel the life ebbing from Hilda and into me. A force that coursed through my veins and which gave me hope when she was in the throes of despair. I was disappointed when you rescued her, naturally, but it made little difference to my plans, other than to delay them until I grew to full strength. You see, you made a fatal error, Lesley. By writing everything down on your precious CBB, you left a portal open. You left the way open for me to enter the real world … I gained access through your postings … through your mind …

Lesley’s blood ran cold.
“If that’s true, then what do you want? Why are you here?”
“Reprisals” The voice was much colder now and it rang in Lesley’s head with deadly intent.
“Who?” Lesley closed her eyes and pressed her lips together, waiting for the reply, the response that would confirm her worst nightmare.
“You know the answer to that already, Lesley. Don’t you think it’s something of a coincidence that I choose to introduce myself to you today? You and I are taking a little trip, Lesley. You will drive me to your meeting so that you can introduce me to all your friends from the CBB.
“I won’t do it!” Lesley clenched her fists but even as she spoke the engine started and her arms were forced to take the wheel as though she was being manipulated by an invisible puppet master.
“North of Oxford, isn’t it?” said the voice gently, as Lesley was compelled to indicate and feed into the traffic.
“Stop controlling me!” Lesley struggled to manoeuvre the car but there was no contest. She was helpless.
“Don’t you want to know what I’m going to do?” the voice enquired softly.
The colour drained from Lesley’s face but she made no reply. Instead she began to focus on happy thoughts, fond memories, anything to distract her from the voice. There must be a way, she thought desperately, there must be a way to stop this … but a shrill burst of laughter flooded her brain.
“Don’t be so naiive, Lesley, you’re powerless to prevent this!”
“Leave them alone!” shouted Lesley. “They’re innocent in all of this! I wrote the story, I decided what was going to happen. I'm the one to blame. If you want vengeance, take me!”

“Very noble, Lesley” the voice mocked, “But futile. I have a number of scores to settle, not just with yourself. They all helped and as a consequence, they are all culpable. I’m looking forward to reaching your friend’s house. Rachael P, isn’t it? Played quite a role in Hilda’s liberation and I see she’s taken it upon herself to “fill-in” on some of my plotlines. As though she could write a better scene than me? Such arrogance! But no worse than KB. I’ve had that one marked for some time. Answering questions as if she knew my stories better than me and writing not one, but three, books, as if I didn’t write enough! The audacity of her! And they’re not the only ones by a long chalk. The one that calls herself Rachel has a lot to answer for. I believe she started it. There were some standards, some parameters, until she wrote her story. She seems to have incited the rest of you – taking my characters, my locations, my plotlines and wreaking havoc with them. Oh no, I won’t have it. You will all pay for this and pay dearly.”
“There’ll only be a few of us there, many of them had to pull out at the last minute” Lesley was trying her hardest.
“Don’t insult my intelligence woman!” the voice thundered, causing Lesley to wince. “I know exactly who will be there. Carolyn P for one. She wrote a story to which I’ve taken particular exception – killing off my characters with no respect whatsoever. Pat W, she’s another one thinking of writing one of my books. Who do these people think they are? How dare they?”
“Perhaps, originally, they were inspired by you”, ventured Lesley tentatively. “They do say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”
“Fool! None of them can write like the great Elinor Brent-Dyer!”
“But … but you’re not really her. She died years ago, you’re just an evil force … something that’s broken through from … aagh!”  Lesley’s protests were stifled as though a sharp slap had caught her across the face.

The voice continued remorselessly.
“Lisa_T and Catherine – did they really think there would be no comeback? Pregnant girls and affairs between the mistresses! I will not have my reputation sullied in this way! Rebecca, Andycee, Liss and the rest with their stupid tales of Bond, Biggles, Buffy”, these last names spat out, “Vikki, Chloe, Ray, all of them, all pale imitations of my supreme art and an affront to my genius! Which reminds me, I gather your friend Xanthe and sundry others will not be present, I must find a way of visiting them separately..."
Lesley took advantage of the voice’s rant. With a valiant effort she tried frantically to force the car into the path of a large lorry on the inside lane but before she could even move she found herself flung unceremoniously into her seat. Then her head was dragged back as if something was pulling her hair and the voice whispered menacingly in her ear.
“Resistance is useless, Lesley, and pathetic. You are under my control and I know your every thought. You can not alter that. Accept it or I may be forced to punish you.”
Ashen-faced, Lesley sat still but continued to ask questions.
“I don’t understand. How come I know that you’re controlling me? Why are my thoughts mine? It was different for Nell and Hilda and the rest”
“As I explained, Lesley, I have grown in strength since my incarceration.” The voice sounded triumphant. “And this is part of your fate. My plans involve using you to hurt your friends. They will see and hear you, Lesley. You will speak and act normally. They will trust you and when I am satisfied that there are no doubts, no suspicions, I will put my strategy into play. You’re very lucky, you know”, the voice became conversational, “You will get to see my full scheme in action before I turn my attentions to you.”
Lesley gulped as the bile rose in her throat.
“What about Australia … and … and the school?” It was barely a croak.
“They’re next” The reply was terse, and brutal.
“And what is it that you’re going to do?” The question had to be asked.
“No, Lesley, I don’t want to give away too many details. That would spoil the surprise and I know how much you and your friends love your cliff edges.” The voice conveyed a malicious pleasure as it toyed with its victim. “Sufficient for you to know that the original agonies of Hilda Annersley will be as nothing compared to this. I have learnt from my mistakes and this time I will not be so lenient. She at least had some privacy in her anguish. You will all endure the worst , you will each experience your own worst nightmare and you will all suffer in each others’ suffering. Each and every one of you will wish that you had never been born at all …”
“No …” Lesley’s mouth had gone so dry that her voice cracked. “Please ………………………”

Meanwhile, north of Oxford, CBBers were beginning to arrive at Rachael P’s house. Joyful greetings were exchanged, provisions unpacked and preparations began. All were excited and oblivious to their future. And, not many miles away, an ordinary car with its lone occupant, horror in her eyes, was slowly wending its way up the motorway … relentlessly … inexorably ……….

*shudder* She's baaaaaack! (Okay, sorry, that was overly dramatic but it was the only thing I could think of.)

Poor Lesley! What an awful fate for her! And what's going to happen to the rest of us? (BTW, Lesley, it's very noble of you to sacrifice yourself for us, but I don't think it will help...)

Oh 'eck. Who's responsible for this effusion? Not Lesley- that's not the way she writes. One of the Rachels, maybe?

*unsure whether to laugh or wibble at the thought of beirng at Elinor's mercy*

*hopes this one turns into a marathon! Looks like we might need our SAS gear again.. ;)*

I would have said it wasn't Lesley, because the time it was posted is when she's at work. However, not long after she logged off, Elinor logged on. So I'm reserving judgement on the author.

Oh, and I presume it's not the same person as EBD_herself, because otherwise why not use that moniker?

Oh dear. Given the abilities of the writers on this board expect anything and everything to be in this one.

Lisa_T: methinks it is time to wibble AND break out the SAS gear again and stock up on Baileys ;D

You forgot everyone Kathryn! :)

*takes a swig of Baileys- might need it later!*
Hey, if we're meeting for the gathering that means some of us have come over from Oz, which (gulps) means that there will almost definitely be some original CS characters with us.

Oh well. After all the effort we put into rescuing them, maybe they'll have to rescue us! ;D

Unexpected development!
But Elinor isn't really real is she?  She may be temporarily in control possession of Lesley's mind, but she isn't a physical entity, is she?
So if she doesn't exist, there's no need to be scared of her.
I think that makes sense.

Well, I'm no-where near Oxfordshire, not very near anyway, so I'm not scared at all, but perhaps the CBBers should consider getting Lesley very, very drunk, hopefully thiws would have the same effect on Elinor and they could work out someway of eliminating her.

I don't think it's Lesley - I agree about the style and would you do that to yourself?!
And if it's a Rachel, it must be one of the ones without the extra "a" - I stick to "behind the door" chats!!

*scurries off to barricade front door and contact estate agents*
Er, did I mention that you may need a new venue for March?!

I'll be peeved if it is - cos she's not let on!!

But if that's the case then it could also be EBD_Herself, throwing the scent as it were (not that she's got any reason to hide behind (another) false name as we still don't know who she is!

Hmm, that was unexpected.

Good though.

I think I would guess Rachel, it doesn't read quite like Lesley, too long for Vikki who makes short posts, there is a possibility of Esmerelda but that just doesn't sound right. I don't think it sounds like KB, but I'm not sure. Too sane for Lisa, and again the style is slightly different. We should be able to work this out unless it is somone who only posts occasionally. It's not Chloe, and I don't think Xanthe but could be mistaken.

I know it's not me, but what was wrong with killing Robin, and Madge, and Reg, and Bill.....? Does this mean I have to put the carving knife away? I had such a good funeral episode up my sleeve for the christmas drabble as well.  :P

Whoever it is, I hope we get some more soon.

Carolyn is right - it isn't me, far too many full stops around for my liking, and I'm much too sweet and gentle to do something like that anyway,
I've no more idea who it could be than anyone else, but I'm very interested in seeing what happens next.

*splutters indignantly* Too sane for me, indeed! I can write as sanely as anyone else. Besides, as I keep telling you, I wasn't responsible for the wilder excursions on Tara.

It's not KB, I'm pretty certain of that, having read Peace and TOG. ;) Not Lesley- why should she suddenly change her formatting? Definitely not Vikki, Chloe or Marianne. Caroyln- h'mm. Not bloodthirsty enough- the story that is! It *could* be Rachael P, but I have to admit I think the best candidate is Rachel. She's got the kind of mind that could think this up AND the formatting and punctuation is pretty close to her style.

Rebecca, maybe? Or then again it could be a lurker, but I doubt it.

*g* Poor Lesley. But you have to admit there's a kind of wild justice about this- after everything you put us (and Hilda et al) through!!!!!

just had a thought. Does anyone remember on the Lesley's Adventures thread, I suggested that we get Lesley tortured by EBD. Someone took me up on it- it *might* have been Rachel. Maybe this is simply a developed version of it! ;D

come on, whoever you are. give us more!!!!!!

My money's on Rachel.  I think the style is about right and I wouldn't put it past her!  Although, considering she has kids, is she likely to have had the time to log on at that time of the morning?

The time means that it would be possible for either continent, not too early or too late.

As for Kids, well I've posted at that time before, only very quickly. If it was prepaered before and someone went on just to post it could be done in less than ten minutes. Did anyone notice how long 'Elinor' was logged on for, that might give a better clue. My money is still on Rachel, and I agree that it is a regular poster and not a lurker, the confidence is a giveaway, and there is a familiarity about the style.

Lisa, my stories are not bloodthirsty I only kill people when I have to. Although after reading the christmas drabbles, Well I'd better not say anymore .....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................yet!

I suspect the author will (if she hasn't already) deny responsibility for it so we don't get suspicious. And I agree with Lisa that Rachel is seemingly increasingly like the culprit.

I threatened her thesis PBs with a quick and painful death so I think she is telling the truth. Her supervisors would hunt her down if she didn't do any work. And anyway, Peace is with GGBP so I can't threaten it even if I wanted to.

There was another knock at the door.
“Esmeralda! Hi! We weren’t sure whether you’d be able to come. I’m so glad you could … come in … come in … most people are here already … Sue, Jennie, half the Rach(a)els and most of the Katherines … oh, and there’s Aletea behind you, fantastic!”
“I’m surprised Lesley isn’t here yet” KB spoke from behind Rachael P.
“Maybe the traffic was bad on the M25, I don’t envy her that journey, “ Rachael laughed. “She’ll be here shortly. I spoke to her last night and she said she wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
“Maybe that’s her now,” as there was another knock.
“Lesley! You made it! So good to see you again! How have you been?”
“Fine thank you, Rachael,” Lesley clasped Rachael’s hand and moved through to greet KB. Rachael gave her a sharp look and then went to close the door with a puzzled expression on her face.

She had no time to reflect, however. As Lady Opener, Liss was formally commencing the proceedings with a short but welcoming speech and, despite the majority of people having already met in Australia, everyone was proudly wearing their name badges, as created by Chloe. The Entertainments team, headed by Richenda & Co. had surpassed themselves. There was a sheets and pillowcases fancy dress competition won by Rachel who had contrived to arrive as the Sanity Cow, Morality Pig and the rest of her infamous menagerie all in one costume! Vikki had won a spot prize for the Most Inapplicable which was awarded by KB. She had been unanimously nominated judge because it was not to be expected that she travel with a costume from Australia. Everyone had been confused by Vikki’s entirely golden attire, even down to gold face paint. No one had been able to guess at her “character” and there were snorts of derision when she innocently proclaimed, “I’ve come as Silence – Miss Annersley is always ringing for Silence and you know, Silence is Golden?!”

Small teams of CBBers acted out various tableaux from the the school’s annals. Ray and her team, who comprised of Cumbrian_Rachel, NickiL and Edith brought the house down with their interpretation of Jack Lambert and Jane Carew’s fight over Miss Wilmot and Miss Ferrars’ car. Edith had been over-enthusiastic in her acting and the bucket of water with which Nicki had been washing the car went flying, soaking the front rows of their audience. Finally, the drabble “Round Robin” had to be abandoned amidst gales of laughter. The majority of the party had been reduced to stitches thanks to the combined efforts of star yibblers Vikki, Lisa_T and Rachel.

As the games were being played, Rachael P glanced across at Lesley on a number of occasions. She sensed that something was wrong but she couldn’t put her finger on it. A break in the afternoon heralded Refreshments and everyone tucked in with gusto to brownies, chocolate cake and a hundred and one other calorie-laden goodies. Vikki and her team were heartily congratulated. KB disappeared into the kitchen to make more tea and Rachael, with another perplexed look at Lesley, followed, hoping for a private chat.
“KB, is it me or do you notice anything strange about Lesley?”
“Lesley? No, I don’t think so, why?”
“You’ll let me know if I’m being paranoid but when she arrived, well, that wasn’t the most effusive welcome I’ve ever had.” Rachael looked awkward.
“How do you mean?”
“Well, think about it, we spent a couple of weeks together in Oz, we even shared a room. It turned out we had loads in common, we had a brilliant laugh and I’d say that we became good friends. When we said goodbye at the airport there were hugs and promises to stay in touch and we have, we’ve spoken most weeks. Yet she barely shook my hand earlier on and I know I’ve done nothing to offend her.”
KB frowned. “ Now that you mention it, she doesn’t seem to be her usual upbeat self. I’d put it down to the long journey.”

At this point Lisa_T interrupted. She had followed Rachael P and stood watching the conversation.
“I agree”, she said. “You guys know how it’s impossible for me to follow more than one conversation at a time and when it gets too difficult I tend to watch people’s body language and their interaction with each other.”
Of course, so what have you noticed?”
Lisa came and sat down. “Lesley’s acting normally alright but something’s missing. There’s something just a touch mechanical or forced about her, as if she’s just going through the motions. No one else seems to have noticed it but it’s as though her whole spirit was subdued. I wonder what’s caused it. Should we ask her?”
“No!” Rachael P was adamant. “I know it sounds ridiculous but I’ve got a bad feeling about this. I don’t think we should confront her, just keep an eye on her. KB, can you contact Australia on your mobile from here? I don’t want to use the landline in case anyone overhears and gets alarmed but I think we should tell the Heads.”
“Don’t you think you’re over-reacting?” On the face of it. KB was being sensible but she was also reluctant to disturb her Head in the middle of her night!”
Lisa_T grinned. “Don’t worry, KB, Hilda won’t bite her Staff Baby. Rachael’s right – better to be safe than sorry.”

KB grimaced at her friends before slipping out the back door to make the call. When she returned her face was very grave. She handed the phone to Rachael.
“Miss Annersely wants a word.” Turning to Lisa, she said rapidly, “The Abbess and Bill were making themselves a cup of tea. They’d both been woken with bad dreams and and they both felt that something dreadful was about to happen but they couldn’t specify what. They’re both very concerned about this meeting.”
“We can’t abandon it now!” Lisa looked worried.  “Did they have any suggestions?”
“Only that I should contact them every hour, on the hour, even if it’s just a quick text message. If we miss even one communication then they’ll know there’s a problem.”
Rachael had been listening intently to Miss Annersley and she now switched off the phone. “Message for Lesley, if it becomes necessary” she explained succinctly.
KB informed her of what had been decided and she nodded, “Good plan.”
Liss moved across the room to stare out of the window. “I think, if anything’s going to happen it will be quite soon. Look, it’s getting dusky outside. If there’s some mysterious force at work, I’m sure we’ll see it soon.”
“We’d best get back then, the others will be wondering where we are …”

Lisa’s prediction proved right. As darkness fell and lights were switched on, Lesley stood up to take centre stage and demanded everyone’s attention by rapping sharply on the nearest table. As they all turned their attention to her, the lamps flickered, casting an unnatural shadow behind her. The shadow wavered for a moment before becoming stronger and assuming the shape of a woman. Suddenly, Lesley herself was catapulted forward as though someone or something had shoved her roughly from behind. The shadowy figure remained, becoming more substantial, becoming almost human.

The CBBers were united in their shock. KB and Rachael who were closest to Lesley and half expecting something to happen leaped forward to break her fall and help her back into a chair where she collapsed, shivering convulsively. Rachael grabbed a throw from the sofa and wrapped her closely whilst KB rubbed her arms and back in an attempt to warm her up. Meanwhile, the figure had stepped forward to address the throng.
“Many of you will recognise me and all of you will know who I am, “ there was a dramatic pause as most people gaped. “Elinor Brent-Dyer.”
There was a concerted gasp.
“I have spent many months in a netherland of your making and having escaped from your manufactured prison, I wish to get to know each of my gaolers … personally. In the meantime, all you need know is that you are now isolated from the outside world. The doors and windows are all locked. All means of communication, your phones, laptops, mobiles, they are all defunct. You are now my captives. I will leave you to become accustomed to the idea but I will be returning shortly to advise you of my intentions.”
The figure seemed to disappear.

A stunned silence met this pronouncement. Looks of shock, horror and fear dotted the room. Liss felt someone stir beside her and became aware that Chloe had edged closer to her.
“It’s OK, Chloe” she tried to reassure the younger girl, “Don’t worry.”
“I’m … I’m not frightened,” Chloe said steadily, although the quiver in her voice belied her words, “It’s just … it’s just that I wish Xan was here …”
“I know, Chloe”, Liss gave her a comforting hug, thinking to herself that perhaps it was a blessing in disguise that Xanthe had been unable to miss her concert.

Meanwhile, Lesley had stopped shivering and the colour was returning to her face. Turning to Rachael she began to speak in a rapid undertone.
“I’m sorry, oh God, I’m so sorry, I never meant for this to happen …”
Rachael replied in a matter of fact tone, though her eyes were sympathetic.
“Sorry? Don’t be so ridiculous! What, did you send an invitation to the woman? I’m the one that left it open house! Lesley, none of this is your fault. Please don’t beat yourself up over it. We guessed that something was wrong but we weren’t quick enough to suss it out …”
“How did you know?”
Rachael smiled. “ I came to the door ready to give you a big hug and you practically walked straight past me, and to greet KB of all people! “She paused to wink at KB in an attempt to lighten the atmosphere. “It just didn’t seem right.”
“I could do with rectifying that now” Lesley looked up shyly and the two women embraced warmly, recalling their shared experiences in Australia only a few months previously.
“Can you tell us what happened?”
As briefly as she could, Lesley explained the events leading up to her arrival at the meeting. The other two sensed that that she was glossing over the horrors of the actual car journey but they refrained from passing comment. KB added to Rachael’s assertions that it was not Lesley’s fault and then signalled to Susan and Carolyn to sit with Lesley.

Title: Re: Real CS: An Epilogue or Lesley's Nemesis
Post by Elinor on Nov 20th, 2003, 7:18am
“You were very specific – why those two?” asked Rachael with interest as they walked back to the kitchen.
“I think they’re the two most likely to be able to help her” explained KB thoughtfully. “Lesley’s never expressed a deep faith so I don’t know whether that’s something she would turn to in a crisis, but under the circumstances I think Sue and Carolyn can help. They both have such a strong conviction that I think they can help Lesley just by their presence. Did you notice them while Elinor was speaking? They seemed much calmer than the rest of us, more accepting. I wonder whether that’s because they can endure whatever life holds in store for them because they have such a staunch belief in a higher power? Either way, they’re both very understanding, compassionate women and I think Lesley will find some peace in their strength.”

“Good scheme – where’s Lisa?”
“Here – what do you guys think?” Lisa was looking strained.
“I’m worried.” Rachael spoke plainly. “There’s plenty Lesley’s not telling us. She must have spent at least two hours in that car alone with Elinor and she hasn’t breathed a word about it. She must have some idea of what’s going to happen, in which case, I think she’s trying to protect us.”
“Yes, did you see the look in her eyes? Haunted, I’d say, just as she described Hilda.”
“Oh God,” KB’s highly active imagination was in overdrive and she dropped into the nearest chair. “So what can we do?”
“Nothing … for now. There’s no point pushing Lesley, she’d been though enough for now. I expect she’ll tell us when she feels ready. At least the Heads will know that something’s amiss. How long since you last texted, KB?”
“At least half an hour”
“Great, so we wait for them.” Lisa sounded relieved.
Rachael shook her head. “That’s another thing that concerns me. If the Heads fly out looking to resolve the situation, they may be walking straight into a trap. God knows what it will do to Lesley if she witnesses Elinor taking Hilda prisoner again. She loves and respects the woman … well, we all do, but …”
“But with Lesley it goes deeper … you’re right, she’s always taken Hilda’s corner and Hilda is aspirational as far as Lesley is concerned. I don’t think she’d ever forgive herself.”

The three women looked very sombre. Moments later they felt themselves drawn back towards the sitting room where Elinor had reappeared. The figure bade everyone sit down, then drew a chair into the centre of the room, stating sinisterly,
“A taste of things to come.”

Are we supposed to treat 'Elinor' as the Elinor in the drabble or are we supposed to treat 'Elinor' as being nothing more than a pen name for someone who is actually appearing in the drabble as themselves?

I would go for the first option.

Pointing imperiously at Jennie who had been sitting unobtrusively in one corner, she beckoned her forward. Apprehensively, but with her head held high, Jennie sat in the chair. The room immediately darkened with one wall transforming into what appeared to be a three-dimensional cinema screen. Although no visible binds could be seen, it looked as though Jennie was restrained at the wrists and ankles. A spotlight fell on her as the screen came to life, showing what appeared to be a jungle scene with dense foliage surrounding a muddy river. A woman, it could have been Jennie herself, was wading waist-deep in the water. Suddenly, there was a flurry of activity beneath the surface and the woman could be seen thrashing around and screaming, desperately trying to escape.”
“Oh, God, no!” Vikki was the first to grasp what was happening. “It’s piranhas, Jennie wrote about them on the board, she’s terrified of piranhas!”
The CBBers felt themselves turning to look at Jennie who sat with beads of sweat on her forehead, inhaling in fast, shallow breaths with her eyes glazed over. She struggled against her chair but it was clear that she could not move and that she could not even turn her head or close her eyes from the vision before her. As one, the CBBers themselves tried to turn away but they too were rooted to the spot, forced to witness Jennie’s distress.

Instinctively, Carolyn and Sue reached out towards Lesley’s hands and she gripped them tightly, staring at the scene before her in horrified fascination. As quickly as it had begun, it was all over. The “screen” disappeared, the lighting returned to normal and Jennie slumped in her chair. Ray and Pat W hastened to help her back to her place and Emma_N, a First Aider, checked her over. There were no physical injuries or even signs of distress other than a look in Jennie’s eyes, that same haunted look, which spoke of one who has seen her own private hell.

The figure gave a small smile of satisfaction as she surveyed the room. As Ray turned back from assisting Jennie, she saw it and was consumed with rage. Striding forward, as if to confront the figure she was stopped abruptly in her tracks. The figure merely held up its hand but Ray was lifted in the air and slammed back against the wall where she crumpled, groaning. Even as Kathryn and Esmeralda rushed to help, the figure was speaking.
“Rule number one, “ it began softly, “No heroics. No martyrs. I can second guess your every move and you can not overpower me. I suggest you learn this lesson quickly.  Retribution will be more painful for each infringement. You have been warned.”

Liss looked round at the stricken faces, particularly the younger members of the group … Annie, Lizi, Chloe, Amy, … then stood up and stepped forward, raising her hands in supplication.
“Elinor, please, listen to me,” she began. A swift pressure against the back of her legs caused her to drop to her knees with a sickening crack.
“Rule number two,” the voice commanded, “Respect must be shown when addressing me. Continue.”
Liss swallowed the anger which threatened to overwhelm her and spoke as submissively as she could.
“Elinor, I created the Chaletian Bulletin Board and I am its Administrator. I take full responsibility for its content. There’s no need to keep all these women hostage, I …”
“What did I say about heroics?” The voice sounded bored and, more menacingly, irritated. “Do I need to make an example of you as well?”
“Please,” Liss persevered, “A number of these people are young, still students or at school even. Others have young children who need them. Please, have some pity – let them go. There’d still be a number of us remaining,”, here she raised her eyebrows at those nearest who nodded in return, “Enough to satisfy whatever it is you want …” For the life of her she could not prevent the tremor in her speech.

“Pity?” The figure spat out the word with venom. “What pity did you and your friends show me when you left me in that hellhole?”
The figure moved towards Liss and a shadowy hand stretched out towards her neck to squeeze her throat. Liss stood motionless, pinioned by an invisible energy. As the pressure increased and her airways were constricted, her fists clenched. She was determined not to buckle despite her body’s fight for air.
“Once again and for the last time – I decide what happens … to whom and when … your entreaties fall on deaf ears”
Liss was released and she staggered back to the group, gulping down deep breaths of air.
“Anyone else who does not understand my rules should make themselves known. If necessary, I can afford you … private tuition …” The lingering on the final words caused more than one CBBer to give an unconscious shudder.
There was no response. The message had been well and truly driven home.

Again, the figure disappeared. One by one, the CBBers began to move and to speak as the tension dissipated. Pat W was crouched next to Jennie with one arm flung protectively round her shoulders.
“I’m OK, really” Jennie averred. “It was all over in a matter of seconds.”
Abi brought her a cup of tea and she took it with shaking hands. Sipping distractedly Jennie could feel the warm liquid do its job. The colour returned to her face and her eyes regained a little of their usual sparkle.
“Maybe you should try to tell us about it” prompted Pat. “I know it’s difficult but it may help you later if you can address it now. It … it looked terrible.”
“It was” Jennie’s tone was flat. “How much did you see?”
“All of it. It was like watching a horror movie and we were glued to it. We tried to look away but it was impossible. She was forcing us to watch …”
Jennie could sense Pat’s discomfiture.
“It doesn’t matter. It wouldn’t have made any difference. I … I didn’t even know you were there … it felt so real … like one of those dreams when you think it can’t be happening, that it must be a nightmare but you can’t wake yourself up ... I … I was living it …”
“It was just a dream, Jennie, nothing more,” Pat clasped her closer. “That b*tch has found a way to probe our minds - to uncover our deepest fears and use them against us. That’s what she’s done to you and I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s got something similar planned for every one of us.” She shivered, trying to ignore her own personal fears that she could suddenly sense preying on her subconscious.
At that moment, Emma_N returned to double-check on Jennie.
“What about Ray and Liss?” Jennie’s first thoughts were with the others.
“Rather bruised and demanding to know about you,” Emma’s demeanour was reassuring. “You’re all going to be just fine.”

Bu**er! I'm included too.

I swear it is not me. There is no way known I could write stuff like this. My PBs are the scholarly quiet type who don't do tension, fear and horror.

And just to make things interesting on the author front, it is actually possible to log on two different people at once. I'm using the computer at uni and the one from the shortcut button bar on the desktop and the one through everyday use folder don't seem to be linked. So when I log onto one, I'm not on the other. Yet when I have multiple versions of the board open at home, I become logged into the other one. So it could be someone who is logged on as themself when Elinor is posting.
And just to prove that it is possible, have a look at the post after this one!

Title: Re: Real CS: An Epilogue or Lesley's Nemesis
Post by Elinor on Today at 7:17am
Moving across to Lesley, Rachael P sat next to her quietly. Eventually Lesley spoke.
“It’s as she said. Our own individual nightmares, observed by everyone.”
“Is that what she promised?”
“Yes”
“How bad was it? In the car?”
“Bad enough”
“Did she hurt you?” Rachael’s eyes scanned Lesley’s face.
“Superficially”
“Anything else?”
“No” The reply was too swift.
Rachael paused for a moment. “There is some hope, you know” she began carefully.
“Hope? How so?” Lesley’s voice was listless.
Rachael hesitated. “I don’t think you’re going to like it …”
“Why not?” Lesley’s voice sharpened.
Raising her eyes to Lesley’s own, Rachael began, “Before Elinor’s figure materialised, when we were concerned about you, we rang Australia. Hilda and Nell were awake, even thought it was the middle of their night. They sensed a problem. We agreed to contact them hourly and well, for the last couple of hours, they won’t have had a signal.” She looked at Lesley anxiously.

Lesley looked as though she couldn’t believe her ears.
“You mean to tell me that Hilda and Nell might take it upon themselves to travel here to find out what’s going on?”
“I … I don’t know …”
“What if it’s a trap? Don’t you think Elinor would do anything to resume her torture of Hilda?”
Rachael bit her lip. “I know … we didn’t mean for this to happen but Lesley, it’s our only chance. If we hadn’t spoken to them, nobody would know what had happened!”
Lesley held her head in her hands. “Hilda’s been through more than enough, “ she murmured, “I swear, I’ll never forgive myself if anything … if anything should … “ She broke off, unable to complete the thought.
Rachael took one of her hands. “Lesley, I spoke to her and she specifically sent you a message. She seemed to know how you’d be feeling if it came to this.”
Lesley looked up expectantly.
“She said, ‘Tell Lesley that she is not to blame. If she had not written what she did, I would still be Elinor’s prisoner and that doesn’t bear thinking about. Whatever happens, whatever fate holds in store for all of us, Lesley must understand that this is not her fault. If Elinor has returned then we were all powerless to prevent it. Please tell Lesley my prayers are with her and give her my love.”
Lesley nodded and relaxed a little. “If it’s OK with you,” she said calmly, “I’d like to be on my own for a while.”
“Of course”, and with a gentle squeeze of Lesley’s shoulder, Rachael left, signalling to the others to give her some space.

Rightbackatcha, Elinor:
A knave; a rascal; an eater of broken meats; a base, proud, shallow, beggarly, three-suited, hundred-pound, filthy, worsted-stocking knave; a lily-livered, action-taking knave, a sleeperson, glass-gazing, super-serviceable finical rogue; one-trunk-inheriting slave; one that wouldst be a bawd, in way of good service, and art nothing but the composition of a knave, beggar, coward, pandar, and the son and heir of a mongrel b i tch: one whom I will beat into clamorous whining...

(God, I love Shakespeare when he turns nasty! ;D)

Okay, I admit I was curious so I went and looked up our dear Elinor's chosen quote. This is it in a fuller version:

"No, you unnatural hags
I will have such revenges on you both
That all the world shall – I will do such things
What they are, yet I know what; but they shall be
The terrors of the earth
No, I'll not weep:
I have full cause of weeping; but this heart
Shall break into a hundred thousand flaws,
Or ere I'll weep. O fool, I shall go mad!"

which comes from King Lear (and of course we all know what happened to him in the end! ;)). I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions on whether we are the unnatural hags, or if she was describing herself. :D

Oh dear, I'm torn between fear and laughing!

Fear at Elinor's plans - Lesley, I very much enjoyed my role in your story but I'm worried that it may come back to haunt me - on this occasion I'd prefer a much lower profile!

And laughing at our paranoia as to who may be writing it - KB, I don't think it's you but the timing of the posts is funny!
Thanks for letting us have the Shakespeare quote - thought I recognised it - now very embarassed as I did King Lear for A-level and didn't place it!

I wish we knew who it was but if Kathryn's right about being able to post simultaneously to being on the board, it's going to be difficult to pinpoint the culprit
Hmmmm ............

I can tell you definitely that it's NOT me. The CBB won't let me use the same email address for two characters, and we had to delete the Hotmail address that I set up as it was mucking (not the word that we really used, but I have to remember the Censor) up the whole PC. We had to wipe and reformatt the whole hard drive, and boy, my popularity rating with Andrew was way, way, below zero.

This is a super drabble, but terrifying. I'll try to think of something, but, it seems pretty hopeless, unless someone has brought a partially written drabble with them

I would have thought that it was possible to be logged in under two different names at once, with two different email adressess logged. Surely you just need to have two copies of explorer running at the same time, thus two windows, I'm not going to try it as my alternative persona was wiped and I don't want to set another one up.

I hope that I didn't tell you what any of my top fears are, but I'm afraid that since I had to face one recently and did so extremely badly that I might have done. However I haven't posted much this last few weeks so I mught be safe. It will be interesting to see what she comes up for me anyway.

I had forgotten Lanswythe, but that it a very good possibility, there is a something in the writing that makes you 'see' the situation and Lanswythe has that, remember gold lame skirts, but I don't think the style is similar enough.
Rachel, KB or Lesley herself I think. (Double bluff.)
