Happy to oblige Lesley! ~ Vikki

Just re-posting last post of Mk 7 - will be back with more when it's written!

A few minutes later Hilda Annersley returned to the Study, Nell Wilson, sat at the desk, looked up, “I’ve got a couple of things to do first, Hilda, you should go on ahead,”

Hilda took a deep breath, thinking, then nodded, she turned to the door, Nell’s voice stopped her,

“Oh, by the way, what do you think of the Study?”

Hilda looked around, “Apart from being untidy, I think Madge’s Study is perfect,” she smiled,

Nell grinned, “It’s not Madge’s Study, Hilda, it’s mine! Madge’s Study is next door,“ she nodded toward the interconnecting door, “And I thought you’d given up complaining about my untidiness years ago!” She rose and came to stand beside her friend, “take a good look around, Hilda, because soon, this will be yours!”

Hilda Annersley looked across at her friend, concern upon her face, “Nell, I’ve no wish to deprive you of the Deputy Head post,” she began,

Nell smiled, “come here, you need to see this,” she led her friend over to the computer, on-screen were the minutes of the first full Staff Meeting after the rescue of everyone except Hilda, “read Madge’s first speech, specifically the final paragraph, when she mentions both mine and Ruth Derwent’s titles,”

Hilda read through the paragraph, “you both accepted on a temporary basis,” she said quietly,

Nell nodded, “Ruth and I had each gone to see Madge independently, we didn’t know the other had seen her until the Staff Meeting. So the post is yours, it always has been, that is if you can bear no longer being the autocratic ruler any longer!”

Hilda smiled, “at least it’s a lot better than Staff Baby,”

“True, but you’d better hurry up and return, the longer you leave it the more of my stuff you’ll have to tidy up!” Nell grinned.

Hilda raised an eyebrow, “I will expect the Senior Mistress to leave this Study in an immaculate condition,” she said, her tones suddenly returning to normal. She smiled, “I’ll go on ahead, Nell, see you on the beach soon,” she left the Study.

Nell Wilson waited a few minutes then switched off the computer; she went and stood next to the window, looking out. A noise from behind told her that the interconnecting door to Madge’s Study had been opened, and someone walked over to stand next to her.

“Did you hear it all, Daisy?”

Dr Venables nodded, “the door was slightly ajar, I could hear all that was said. You did well, Nell,”

“You weren’t sure it would work,”

“No, but I don’t know Hilda as well as you, I was afraid she would choose Alison, then you’d have made the situation worse. That’s why I wanted to be here, in case it did go wrong,”

“I never had any doubt that she’d choose to return herself, she is going to be OK now, isn‘t she?” Nell’s voice was rather tired,

“She’s going to recover now, Nell, yes. But it’s not going to happen overnight, and she’s going to have other occasions when she’ll need someone else’s strength.”

“Well, that’s not a problem,” Nell said softly, “she’s family,”

The doctor looked across at Nell Wilson, “make sure you’ve got support too, Nell,” she said quietly, “all counsellors, psychiatrists and the like, need someone they can talk to, use me if you want to,”

“Thanks Daisy, I might just do that,” Nell Wilson said, she looked around her Study and smiled, “well, shall we go join the party?”

*Next bit!*

Down at the beach they were greeted by a number of the original chalet school mistresses,

“Bill! And Daisy too! Merry Christmas both of you, here take these!” Peggy Burnett pressed glasses of punch into both women’s hands. “Glad you could get here!” She kissed both women on the cheek before dancing back to the bar for a refill. Her place was taken by Madge who, glancing up from the turntables, suddenly spotted them and, throwing the headphones over to Kathryn, came running across,

“Merry Christmas, both of you! Did it work, has it helped?”

“I think it’s helped Madge,” this from Nancy Wilmot, “the difference between how Hilda looked when I was driving them both over here, and now is amazing. Nell, Daisy I know you can’t give details but what did you do?”

Nell and Daisy looked at one and other, Daisy answered, “Bill, told me, without giving me any specifics, of a major problem that Hilda was having difficulty with, I spoke to my Mental Health Team about it. They devised a course of action - Nell performed and it worked. I was there solely in case anything went wrong - Nell didn’t think it would but I wanted to be certain,”

Nell Wilson looked around the beach worriedly, “where is she?” she asked,

“Hilda?” this from Ruth who had just come up to hear the last part of the conversation, “That’s easy, look for the place where there’s the highest density of girls, absolute crowds of them, in the middle you’ll find Hilda,” she pointed across the beach where seemingly hundreds of girls were congregating,

“Will she be alright there,” Nell was unable to stop worrying for her friend, “she’s not yet strong,”

“Don’t worry Nell,” Rosalind Moore laughed as she came up to add her wishes of a Merry Christmas, “the Prefects are guarding her! Now you start relaxing for a while - you’ve had this on your shoulders for a long time - perhaps some of us can take part of the burden now.”

“At least more of us can come visiting now, can’t we Bill?” Peggy had returned,

Nell glanced at Daisy, the doctor thought for a moment then nodded, “Yes, I think Hilda will be able to manage more visits from people now. It‘ll probably be good for her.”

“Is she going to be well enough to start back at the beginning of term, Daisy? That’s the end of January,” Madge asked quietly,

Daisy thought for a moment, “doubtful,” she replied, “but before the end of February perhaps,”

Christmas Day on the beach was a great success, Hilda and Nell were finally taken back to the house they were renting late that night. Hilda still enriched by being able to speak to all her pupils once more. She seemed to be far better and Nell even entertained hopes that she would be well enough to return when the new term began. However Dr Venables predictions were proven when the nightmares returned. Nell did her best to combat the destructive nature of these dreams, helped by Hilda herself, plus, as they were now receiving visitors on a regular basis, this also helped.

One afternoon, mid-way through January, Nell received an email from England; she discussed it with her friend,

“I’ve had an email from Lesley, Hilda,” she began softly, “she and Rachael are hoping to fly over to Melbourne next week and want to visit, do you feel up to seeing them?”

Hilda nodded, “definitely, Nell, I’d like the opportunity to thank them in person!”

“OK then, they’ve asked if I can supply details of somewhere to stay nearby, rather than go to the School, so I’ll get onto the Net to find a decent place, it’ll only be for a few days,”

“Why bother, Nell,” Hilda’s response was soft, “this house has a third bedroom with twin beds, if they don’t mind sharing they can stay here.”

Nell looked across at her friend, “Are you sure, Hilda? I mean you’re still getting those nightmares and such…”

“Nell, these two are responsible for me being here at all, I don’t mind them knowing if I still have a way to go in my recovery yet.”

Lesley, how about writing the adventures of the School now they have all reached freedom?

Anything to keep this story going. It is brilliant, and I love the way you have been able to swing from the comic to the deadly serious and write both so well.

Hoping there is more.

*Next bits - I'm afraid these are pure indulgence!*

The following week both Hilda and Nell were sat on the front porch one morning when a taxi drew up from the airport, two women got out, the first woman tall, perhaps the same height and build as Nell, she had dark brown, wavy hair tied back from her face and dark brown eyes. The second woman was shorter but bigger, she had short, dark red hair and brown eyes. Both women smiled as Nell ran down the steps to greet them.

“Rachael, Lesley, wonderful to see you both,” Nell hugged both of them, “no leave your bags there - we’ll sort them out later - there’s someone I think you both want to meet.” She led them both up the steps to where Hilda stood, waiting. Hilda noted that the shorter woman had moved behind the other, she seemed almost to be hiding!

“Hilda, this is Rachael Pelter and Lesley, Lesley stop hiding, she’ll not bite!” Nell pulled the red haired woman forward, “this is Lesley Green, both of you, this is Hilda Annersley,”

“I think they may be aware of that, Nell,” Hilda remarked gravely, her eyes alight with amusement. She stepped forward and held out a hand to each of them,

“So wonderful to meet you, Miss Annersley,” Rachael looked as though she wanted to curtsey!

“We’ve met before Rachael?” Hilda queried, “I believe you were one of those who helped save the Juniors, and had the idea to send the eldest children through first?”

Rachael went red at her deeds being remembered. Hilda turned to the second woman,

“Lesley, good morning, welcome to Australia!”

Lesley shook the hand but remained silent, Rachael nudged her, “say something you idiot!”

“Hello Miss Annersley, I’m really pleased to meet you,” Lesley’s voice was very quiet.

Hilda looked at both of the women with amusement, “Lesley, Rachael, I think after all that you did for me, you, of all people, are entitled to use my Christian name,”

Lesley and Rachael looked at each other and smiled.

A little later, their bags safely stowed in their room, Lesley and Rachael joined Hilda and Nell in the lounge, Nell brought in coffee for everyone,

Hilda picked up a hard backed book, from the shelf, on seeing it Lesley went rather red,

“I’ve read the book, Lesley,” Hilda’s voice was soft, “although of course, I really had no need to read it!” she smiled across at both Lesley and Rachael, Lesley had been struck dumb once more so Rachael replied,

“You mean you already knew what was in it?” Rachael said carefully,

“Of course, I was still a character when it was published, therefore everything in the book actually happened to me!”

Lesley found her voice, “you mean you remember everything I wrote as actually happening to you?” she sounded rather horrified, remembering all the scenes she had written.

Hilda nodded, “although, to be fair, due to the somewhat specialised memory  with which I was endowed by Elinor Brent-Dyer, I am also able to remember what happened to me during that year or so, before you wrote the book,” she smiled slightly, although her eyes darkened, “of the two, I think I’d rather have the memories engendered by your book, Lesley, EBD was rather more brutal.”

The four women sat sipping their coffee for sometime before Hilda spoke again, “Ladies, I’m sure others have said this to you, I’m sure Nell has said this, but I should just like to add my sincere thanks to both of you for saving my life, and causing me to enter the Real World,”

“It wasn’t me, Hilda, Lesley wrote the book…”

Lesley herself interrupted, “the idea was yours Rachael, you have half the credit.” she looked across at Hilda, “we were only too glad to help, Hilda,” she said shyly, “after writing the book I felt I’d come to know you rather well, it’s very strange, but also wonderful to actually be sitting here talking to you!”

The rest of the day was spent introducing Rachael and Lesley to the Australian coast, all four women went for a walk along the shore later and, in the evening, after dinner sat out on the front porch playing cards. Lesley proved to be spectacularly bad at Bridge, so much so that they changed to other games!

Just before retiring to bed that night, Hilda made a strange request of Lesley,

“Have you a notebook or something available, Lesley?” she asked softly,

“I have in my hand luggage, Hilda, shall I get it?” she disappeared to retrieve it on seeing Hilda nod slightly.

“I know you mainly write on your computer, Lesley, but I understand you will occasionally hand write scenes?”

Lesley nodded, “yes, I wrote most of the scenes at the end of the fourth chapter, while in Edinburgh, in a notebook, I’d not taken my laptop with me,”

Hilda nodded, Nell looked across at her with some concern as Hilda appeared to be very worried about something,

“I wonder, Lesley, if you would write something now,” Hilda’s voice was very quiet, “it doesn’t have to be very long, just something simple for me to do, open a window, go upstairs, pick up a cup, something like that. And while writing that, really will that the scene you are writing should come to pass.”

Lesley looked puzzled, but obediently sat there and wrote a few lines, Nell and Rachael exchanged worried glances.

“Have you finished it?”

Lesley nodded.

“Did I do, whatever it was that you have just written?” Hilda’s voice now held a note of some anxiety,

“No, Hilda, I wrote that you stood up and went to draw the curtains,” this from Lesley, “look, they are still open,” she pointed to the window and Hilda and the other two glanced across at the windows.

Hilda relaxed slightly and smiled, “forgive me, Lesley, but knowing that your writing has had a profound effect on me, I had to check it could not still do so! I would really rather not be subject to any author now!”

“Understood, Hilda. I can appreciate that,” Lesley grinned.

But Lesley (WARNING Pedantic rachel about to jump in), what would have happened if you had included that scene and then had it published? I thought it had to be published to affect Hilda ... or is that still to come?

Title: Re: The Real Chalet School MK 8
Post by Lesley on Nov 9th, 2003, 9:15pm
Rachel - remember - EBD had only to think/write something in original chalet school world - and it would happen. I think that's what Hilda was checking.

Title: Re: The Real Chalet School MK 8
Post by catherine on Nov 9th, 2003, 9:17pm
But the book's already been published in the story and surely now that Hilda is in RL nothing anyone writes about her can make her do things as she's now a person and not just a character in a story.

Actually no, as EBD was never a character she wouldn't be influenced by anything written. However, that said, I've no objection to the thought - or the drabble - very therapeutic i would have thought - especially for the Seniors!

*Real indulgence for this one - don't worry I'll not be writing anymore about L and R's visit!*

That night, sometime after two in the morning, Lesley and Rachael were awoken by some cries from one of the other rooms. They went to investigate but seeing that Nell Wilson was already there, they returned to their beds, quietly talking. A little while later Hilda herself appeared at the door,

“Lesley, Rachael, are you awake?” her low tones sounded slightly shaky,

Lesley switched on the bedside light, “we’re awake Hilda, are you alright?”

Hilda smiled slightly, “I am now,” she said, “my apologies for waking you. Nell is making coffee if you’d like some.”

The two women looked at each other and nodded.

A little later they were all seated down in the lounge, sipping coffee,

“You haven’t asked,” Hilda began, “and I’m grateful for your restraint, but I’m happy to tell you. I am still having nightmares from my time trapped with EBD.”

Rachael spoke first, “we thought that must be it, Hilda, it’s not surprising really, considering,”

“Something like this will take time to recover from, Hilda. But with support, and you have that in Nell,” Lesley smiled across at Nell before continuing, “you’ll recover,”

“You sound as though you have some knowledge of this type of thing, Lesley,” Nell sounded interested,

“Only the small amount of info I picked up during my psychiatric placement, very many years ago as a student nurse,” Lesley admitted, she looked round, both Hilda and Nell looked bemused, “didn’t you know I was a nurse?” she asked softly, “I work for a private company now, in Occupational Health, but the initial training is the same,”

“The reason why the descriptions of you in hospital are so accurate, Hilda,” Rachael smiled…

The following morning saw Hilda, Nell and Rachael up reasonably early, Lesley appeared later on, apologising profusely! The weather was very warm and, rather than decide to do any sight-seeing, Rachael and Lesley joined their hosts on the beach, all four brought books to read. Just before lunch Madge Russell appeared, she immediately recognised the two visitors and greeted them. She then apologised because she needed to ‘talk shop’ with Nell. She and Nell disappeared into the house for a while, leaving Hilda with her two guests. After some time, Hilda had finished her book and glanced across at what her companions were reading,

“I notice you have a text book of some sort there, Lesley,” Hilda began, looking across at where Lesley was lain on her front, attempting to work, “I’m sorry, but I am a school mistress after all! May I ask what subject you are studying?”

Lesley laughed and passed the book across, it was entitled ‘Understanding the Continents - Earth’s Engine’, Hilda looked at it without comprehension,

“It’s a third-level course in Earth Sciences,” she explained, “I’m doing an OU degree…” she stopped as Nell Wilson suddenly appeared in front of Hilda and plucked the book from her grasp,

“You’re studying this, Lesley?” Nell asked quickly, “How far along are you?”

“About two-thirds, maybe a little more,”

Nell laughed, “My dear, would you like a job?” At the stunned silence from Lesley she continued, “Madge and I have been looking for an Earth Science teacher for a few months now, ever since it was decided that it came properly under the Science rather than Geography remit,”

Lesley still looked stunned but managed to answer, “but I haven’t passed the degree yet, and I’m no teacher,”

At this Hilda interrupted, “but you told us last night that you run courses in Stress Awareness, Lesley, you must have some knowledge of teaching,”

“Think about it, Lesley, we could do with you at the Real Chalet School,” Nell smiled, she turned to Rachael, “I don’t suppose you have some talent as a physicist do you?”

Rachael smiled, “sorry Nell, my talents lie in Human Resources, I’m an HR Manager,” seeing the blank looks from all three original chalet school mistresses, Madge had joined them, she elaborated, “er Personnel, payroll, recruitment, sickness absence monitoring,”

At this Madge nodded, “Why Rachael, I have a feeling we could also offer a post to someone of your talents, how would you like to run your own department reporting direct to the Real Chalet School Board?”

*Next installment*

Lesley and Rachael stayed with Hilda and Nell for another three days before they had to fly back. Hilda and Nell both saw them off at the airport, all exchanging hugs before parting. Both women  had been persuaded to take up the offers of employment and would be returning as soon as they could arrange things back in England.

About a week before the scheduled start of term, Madge Russell appeared at the house, “I know Daisy was here yesterday,” she began after initial greeting was over, “Hilda, will you be well enough to start the term?”

Hilda shook her head, “not quite yet, Madge,” she said softly, “Daisy believes, and incidentally I agree, that a further month should be sufficient,”

“Excellent, so I’ll have a full complement of Staff then,” Madge smiled, “however, before that,” she turned to Nell, “Nell, I’ll need you back at the School before term starts,”

“Understood, Madge, Hilda and I were discussing only this morning that it was likely I’d be recalled soon,”

“Yes, well I appreciate that it will mean you moving back to the School, Nell,” Madge turned to Hilda, “you’re welcome to stay at my house Hilda, or, if you prefer, I think I’ve got another solution,”

A few days later, the first of the cottages purpose built for Staff of the Real Chalet School, was occupied. The cottages were fully furnished and, although complete in a short space of time - just over three months - were immaculate. Nell and Hilda had thought for sometime about whether to avail themselves of the offer - eventually deciding that they would give it a three month trial. The cottages had direct access to the School via both telephone and email and it was thought that even if on duty overnight, a mistress could use it.

The area established for the cottages, so far there were ten built, was strictly out of bounds to the School itself, but within easy walking distance. As Deputy Head, Nell was expected to take the School for all mealtimes during the week, however at the weekends the regime was far more relaxed with buffet style meals on offer for both pupils and Staff - and no set mealtimes. Madge, as Head, was there during the week from early morning until mid evening, but not always available at the weekends.

This was the first full term for the Real Chalet School with an almost full complement of both Staff and pupils. There was a great deal of work necessary to ensure the smooth running of the School. Coupled with this were the concerns that Nell still had about her friend’s health, and being available on occasion when Hilda still needed her. In addition, Nell had just started studying for her Chemistry degree but didn’t feel it was right to take any Study leave.

The first two weeks of term therefore saw Miss Wilson at the School almost her entire time; she would rise early and go for a short walk with Hilda before joining the School for breakfast, after spending the day teaching, dealing with correspondence and generally performing her role as Deputy Head, she would after the evening meal, retire back to her Study to continue working. This did however stop when, at ten thirty one night, Hilda had entered the School to find her friend. Miss Wilson had looked up, smiling, as Hilda had entered,

“Hello Hilda, sorry I’ve been delayed, I’ll not be lon… hey what are you doing?”
Nell’s voice had suddenly changed as Hilda had moved around behind her friend and unplugged the computer,

“Nell,” Hilda’s voice was quiet but determined, “a great many years ago, I was making the same mistake that you are currently, that of allowing a new, responsible post take over my life to such an extent that I had no life,” Hilda took a deep breath before continuing, “at the time I had just been appointed Headmistress of the Chalet School, you remember Nell? We had St Scholastika’s joining us and that business with the Balbini twins, and I found myself working from early morning to late at night trying to ensure that everything get done. There were additional concerns due to the health of Mademoiselle as well as early worries about the growth of Nazism. Do you remember who it was that finally got me to see sense?”

Miss Wilson, who had been looking rather annoyed up to that point, suddenly flushed slightly and nodded, “I did, Hilda,” she said softly, “I told you that we’d rather see you enjoying life than work yourself into the grave. I said that if things didn’t get done - so be it.” she smiled a little ruefully, “Alright, point taken, although I can’t say I ever managed to stop you working hard.”

“No, but you did at least ensure that I also enjoy myself,” Hilda smiled, “Madge doesn’t expect you to be here all hours Nell, she certainly isn’t now is she? Once I’m back I don’t intend to be working this hard and long, Nell, yet I do not believe people will have any cause for complaint about my standard of work!”

“They wouldn’t dare!”

Hilda smiled, “Nell Wilson are you coming home now?” the request held just a hint of the headmistress in it.

“Oh very well, Hilda,” Miss Wilson stood up, “one thing though, next time you want to unplug my computer - warn me! I’ve just lost an entire essay because I hadn’t saved it!”

Lesley, it's great to have a scene with a bit of humour, particularly if we get to see Hilda returning to her usual self in it. And I'm impressed at the speed with which Nell picked up computer skills! ;)

*Next! - BTW - KB - they had a computer in the original cs world for almost a year!*

A week later saw the next meeting of the Real Chalet School Board; Madge gleefully introduced Hilda Annersley as the fourth permanent Director and Hilda flushed as everyone present stood and clapped! Overall business discussed was fairly mundane, although there were a number of staff additions to be made, these included Chelsea being appointed Epidemiologist for the hospital and Emma being appointed Games Mistress. Lesley and Rachael’s appointments were also confirmed.

Mollie and Rachel reported on the success of their placements for adoption, saying that nearly all the Juniors and Middles had now been offered a place and that they had currently visited just over one third to assess suitability without anyone so far being deemed unsuitable.

Rachel continued, “we’ve also had some success with the Guardianship idea for the older students - those of 18 or over. This seems particularly popular and those who have signed up are happy to take on one or two girls.” She paused to consult a piece of paper before continuing, “we have had a rather unusual request from a group of girls. They all want to nominate the same two people as their Guardians,”

Madge interrupted, “are these girls all family then, Rachel, that they want to have the same Guardian?”

“Not exactly, Madge,” this from Mollie, “but they are all very close, I’ll read out their names, Alison Martin, Carol Leigh, Louise Chad, Helen Cook…”

“That’s the Prefects,” Hilda put in quickly, Nell was nodding,

Mollie smiled, “Yes Hilda, would you like to know which two people they have requested as their Guardians?”

Later, once the meeting was over, Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson walked over to the Prefects Room. Inside all 15 of the Prefects were waiting.

“We heard about your request, girls,” this from Nell, “must admit it caused us a little concern, didn’t it Miss Annersley?”

“Oh I think so, Miss Wilson, after all we have cause to know all of you rather well and, well some of your past deeds could be construed as somewhat worrying,”

“Most definitely, Miss Annersley, let’s see, there’s kidnapping,”

“False imprisonment,”

“Definitely total disobedience,”

“Burglary,”

“Rigging of competitions - I think that counts as Fraud,” this from Nell,

“Defacement of School Property, that’s Vandalism,” replied Hilda,

“Handling of firearms,”

“A complete disregard of authority, have we forgotten any, Miss Wilson?”

“Er, oh yes, Assault!”

Miss Annersley thought for a moment before reaching up to touch a small scar above her right eye, “yes, I’d forgotten that one,” she said softly. They both gazed across at the 15 Prefects, “Girls,” she smiled, “we would be honoured!”

It's horrible how the long running "serial drabbles" are all ending at the same time   :'(

Somebody had better hurry up and start a new long term one just so we don't all get withdrawal symptoms!

Funny isn't it really - Charles Dickens wrote loads of his 'books' as newspaper/magazine serials, so does that make all of us on a par with Dickens?

Ah well, it's a nice thought   :D

*Still got a few bits to go - there's one loose end that's got to be tied up - surprised no-one has mentioned it!*

At the end of February Hilda drove down to the Real Hospital for a final interview with Dr Venables. On her return she made a call to the Headmistress of the Real Chalet School, “Madge, it’s Hilda, yes I’m just back from seeing Daisy, I wondered if you were free, if I could come over..”

“Better than that, Hilda,” Madge Russell’s voice rang out, “I’ll come to you!” she rang off before Hilda could object.

A very short time later Madge appeared at the cottage, they sat in the lounge with drinks, “I gather I’ve got a full Staff then Hilda?” Madge smiled,

Hilda Annersley smiled, “I may start back whenever it’s convenient, Madge. Daisy sees no reason for me to stay away any longer. Any residual effects I still have are likely to go solely through time. In fact I can start back as soon as Nell has tidied my Study!”

Madge laughed, “she’s done that already, it’s ready for you now!”

Hilda looked surprised, “she didn’t say anything.”

“Well she obviously felt that you’d be returning soon, she cleared up yesterday.” Madge smiled across at her Deputy Head, “Hilda, I wanted to come across here to speak to you because I didn’t want what I’ve to say overheard,”

Hilda looked surprised, “is there a problem, Madge?”

“No, except one of my own making,” Madge smiled, “Hilda I feel exceptionally awkward about being Headmistress rather than you, no wait, let me finish,” Madge said quickly to prevent Hilda’s reply,

“Hilda, I have been Head here for the last year, and I’ve really enjoyed it, I don’t think I’m too bad at the job either! But I’m not you. You are the person best fitted to the role. I know I was the original chalet school’s first Headmistress, but you were the Head for almost all its lifetime,”

“Madge, I am more than content with my role,” Hilda’s soft tones replied, “I consider that you have done a wonderful job here, and have made the post your own,”

The Head smiled, “that’s kind of you, Hilda, but I have made a decision about the future. Being the Managing Director on the Real Chalet School Board - especially with all the expansion that’s been taking place - is rapidly becoming a full time post. With our projected rise in both personnel and business it is likely that it will have to become a salaried position soon anyway. We will be diversifying to include other types of business - I know that Jem’s fitness place may soon be joining us. I will therefore be resigning as Headmistress at the end of the year - I will be recommending that you take on the post, with Nell as your Deputy,”

"Well, if you're sure Madge, then thank you. I gather you do not wish anyone to know about this just yet?"

"Not yet, Hilda, oh let Nell know by all means, but no-one else until nearer the time,"

That was one thing I wondered about- Madge never had to deal with a large school and all that admin, and Hilda was accustomed to it- I couldn't see how they'd ever really reconcile their new roles. Plus the girls and Staff would always think of Hilda as 'the Head' so it could have got awkward for Madge.

*OK I have just got in from work! However I did write this while i was at work!*

The following day saw Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson out walking very early; they then went over to the School early and entered the Deputy Head’s Study,

“All tidy for you Hilda,” Miss Wilson grinned, “Thought I’d just show you how to log on to the computer for the first time – it’s a little different to the one you had back at the chalet school,”

The two women went through all the current and outstanding work for Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson also showed her friend the up-dated Staff and pupil list – as the Deputy Head she would have first responsibility for the Staff’s well-being and discipline as well as that of the pupils. While they were checking through the details of the new members of Staff, the rising bell rang out. They then looked through all the new Staff’s timetables to schedule meetings with the Deputy Head – hopefully within the next few days. One of the names, Miss Bruce, Miss Annersley recognised from some of the minutes she had read the night before of the Real Chalet School Board.

A little later, when the bell for breakfast rang, Miss Wilson stood up, “Well come along, Hilda, can’t have you late on your first day!”

The two friends walked across to the large dining hall; there was a low murmur of voices apparent as they walked toward the door, however, on reaching the door and walking in the noise stopped. Seeing the Deputy Head, the entire School, from the Kindergarten to the Sixth, and including the young adults of the Adult Education wing as well as all the Staff, all rose to their feet and stood, silently waiting.

Also standing there, at the back of the room, were all the kitchen and domestic staff.

Miss Annersley turned to look at her friend, Miss Wilson was grinning, “I assume this isn’t normal behaviour at breakfast?” Miss Annersley’s voice remarked in a very soft tone,

“Nope, I think it’s to welcome you,” Miss Wilson replied,

“Your idea?”

Miss Wilson shook her head, “Nothing to do with me, Hilda, they thought it through all on their own!”

Miss Annersley walked to the head of the Staff table, she gazed around at all the Staff and pupils, smiling, “my thanks, everyone,” she said, her voice, as it had in previous halls, reaching the farthest corner without any apparent effort. “I have missed all of you and I’ve even missed the work!” there was a low chuckle at this, “I am extremely glad to be back, now, please, sit down so we may start breakfast, I’m hungry!”

After breakfast the pupils and Staff were dismissed to their normal duties. Madge had scheduled a meeting with her Deputy Head for 10am that morning – she was not due in until then. There was later a full Staff Meeting. Miss Wilson showed her friend around the School before returning with her to the Deputy Head’s Study. They went through a number of items together, Miss Wilson ensuring her friend was up-to-date about all recent events within the School. A little before 10am she stretched and rose saying that she had a lesson soon and would have to prepare.

“Oh before I forget, Nell,” Miss Annersley’s voice stopped the Senior Mistress, “I glanced at the list of Staff needing Study Leave due to degree courses,”

“Yes, I thought if we could have some form of ratification from you then Rosalie and her staff could arrange the timetables accordingly,”

“No problem, Nell, it’s something that is needed. No, I just wanted to know why the list was incomplete,” the Deputy Head looked at her friend meaningfully, Miss Wilson flushed slightly,

“Hilda, it hardly seems appropriate for me to be taking time off now,” she protested, “I can fit the work in without having to take any additional time,”

“And what would your answer be if any of the Staff said that to you in your capacity as Senior Mistress?” Miss Annersley’s voice was gentle, but implacable, “No Nell, I’ll not allow it, you may have one and a half days study time per week – as one of the Sciences you have the most to relearn, those of us in the English Department will only require one day per week. We’ll have to liase to ensure we not have the same time off, Madge will need at least one of us here,”

Miss Wilson sighed, “I suppose you’re going to insist aren’t you?”

Miss Annersley just smiled.

“Oh, very well, Hilda, but you know you really are a bully!”

“Has it taken you this long to discover that, Nell?” Miss Annersley said, her face expressionless.

Miss Wilson grinned and headed toward the door, a soft voice stopped her,

“One moment Nell, I know I’ve said it before but, now that I’m back, I’d just like to say thank you once more for the last few months. Thank you for being there every time I awoke, for talking to me, for forcing me to talk to you, for showing me my true nature.”  Miss Annersley swallowed slightly before continuing, “during those ten weeks I lost everything, from my dignity and faith, to my self-respect and friends, you restored everything to me.  I owe you my sanity, Nell, I can never repay that.”

“You’re more than welcome, Hilda, I know you’d have done the same for me,” Miss Wilson’s voice was quiet, “We’re family, remember?” She smiled and waved as she left the Study.

Title: Re: The Real Chalet School MK 8
Post by Lesley on Nov 11th, 2003, 9:29pm
*Sorry not KB and Hilda cos that's going to be tomorrow - maybe! This is one I've had written for a while now! Oh and BTW the loose end is something different - actually there are two loose ends!*

About a week later there was a small commotion as a stretch limousine appeared at the front gates, a little later Miss Andrews and Miss Burnett led a visitor into the Staff Room. Miss Annersley; working in her Study, saw none of this. After about 30 minutes there was a knock at the Deputy Head’s Study door and Miss Wilson appeared, Miss Annersley smiled, “hello Nell, what can I do for you?”

Miss Wilson, her eyes glinting with mirth, said, “I’ve brought someone to meet you, Hilda,” she moved to one side to allow another visitor to enter the room.

Miss Annersley looked at the stranger, he was a fairly small and skinny blonde man, in his twenties, no more, he was dressed in baggy trousers, trainers, a small vest top that showed off a large number of tattoos on his back and arms, and a baseball cap, placed back-to-front on his head. She stood up as Nell Wilson said, “Miss Hilda Annersley, I’d like to introduce Mr Marshall Mathers,” she stood back, watching proceedings with interest.

“Oh yes, I understand you’re a friend of Peggy and Sharlie’s, Mr Mathers? Good to meet you,” Miss Annersley held out her hand…

Marshall Mathers left the Study with Miss Wilson after about ten minutes and Miss Annersley settled back down to work, a few minutes later the door flew open and Nell Wilson stormed back in, looking decidedly annoyed.

“Dammit, how do you do that, Hilda?” she cried.

“How do I do what, Nell?” Miss Annersley was attempting to mark an essay and only half concentrating on her friend.

Miss Wilson moved to her friend’s side and placed her hand over the essay, Miss Annersley looked up. “How do you transform the man with the foulest mouth in the Western World into someone who would not have seemed out of place at a Buck House tea party?”

Hilda Annersley looked puzzled, “do you mean Mr Mathers?” she asked.

“Yes I mean Mr Mathers!” stormed her friend, “Hilda, for everyone else he speaks to, myself included, his normal mode of speech contains more expletives and foul language than at a navvies convention! Even when he was introduced to Madge he managed to call her a sl*t and a f***ing bi***  in one sentence! But when he speaks to you he uses the Queen’s English!”

“Well I find it difficult to believe, Nell, I thought he was a very pleasant young man.”

“Have you listened to his music?”

“Oh yes, Carol gave me copies of his CD’s, his use of language is extreme, but it imparts a powerful message!” Miss Annersley looked across at her friend,

“Nell, why are you so upset that Mr Mathers reacted in the way he did? Were you expecting him to shock me? You know you really shouldn’t get yourself so upset, it’s not good for your blood pres…”

“To Hell with my blood pressure!” The Senior Mistress stormed out of the Study, Miss Annersley permitted herself a tiny smile before continuing to mark the essay.

“I wonder, my dear, if you could come to my Study this afternoon after lunch? I understand you have a free period then.”

“Oh, yes of course Miss Annersley, “ Miss Bruce smiled at the Deputy Head, she was unconcerned; being aware that Miss Annersley had spoken to all the new members of Staff over the last ten days of so. She did not see the quick grin of comprehension that the Senior Mistress flashed to her friend before Miss Annersley left the Staff Room.

That afternoon at just before 2pm Miss Bruce appeared at the Deputy Head’s Study,

“Do come in Miss Bruce, sit down, I understand you are known as KB?” Miss Annersley smiled at the German Mistress,

“Er yes, Miss Annersley, my nickname on the CBB.” KB confessed,

“How are you enjoying your time at the Real Chalet School?” Miss Annersley’s eyes twinkled, “I understand you hold the dubious honour of being the youngest in the Staff Room? The Staff Baby?”

“Oh that’s not too bad, Miss Annersley,” KB smiled, “It’s not as though the others ask me to do too much!”

“I wonder why that is,” the Deputy Head’s comment was said very softly and with amusement; it was not heard by the young mistress.

“As I’m sure you are aware KB, I’ve been meeting with all the, to me, new Staff, as a way to familiarise myself with everyone,” Miss Annersley’s low voice continued, her eyes gleaming with mirth, “I must admit though that my reasons for asking to see you today were also to ask if you could explain something,”

“Anything, Miss Annersley,” the Australian sat up straighter, “something to do with Australia itself or any of the customs or rules and regulations perhaps?”

Miss Annersley shook her head, “No, nothing like that, this is something that I recently read on computer, I just wondered if you knew to whom this phrase was attributed, I quote, ‘I however will be spending Sundays attempting to smuggle my latest lovers out of school without any of the girls noticing,’ unquote.”

Miss Annersley glanced across at the German Mistress, KB had suddenly turned deathly pale and was gripping the sides of her chair tightly, she appeared to be in shock.

“Would you happen to know who was supposed to be saying that, KB?” Miss Annersley’s voice remained soft but there was just a hint of ice.

KB coughed a few times, the first time she attempted to speak her voice, pitched too high, sounded like a mouse on helium. She coughed again, swallowed and then replied, “n-n-no, Miss Annersley, I’ve no idea who was supposed to have said that!”

Miss Annersley said nothing, only continued to look at the Australian, noting as she did that KB changed colour from white to red with amazing rapidity, then,

“Are you sure, my dear?” The Deputy Head’s voice was very soft,

KB gulped then looked up, “I’m sorry, Miss Annersley,” she whispered, “it was in a drabble, and the person supposed to be saying that phrase was you!”

Miss Annersley said nothing, but a single eyebrow rose to almost disappear beneath her hair, KB continued, “It was on the CBB, a bit of fun really, not a serious attempt at detailing the chalet school, it got a little out of hand!”

“I see, then this particular quote is one of the most extreme things that I’m supposed to have said or done?” Miss Annersley’s eyes were laughing although KB could not see this as she was staring at the floor.

“Errrm, no Miss Annersley, there are other, far more extreme things that you did in the drabble,” KB’s voice was so quiet that the Deputy Head had difficulty hearing it!

“Perhaps you could detail some of them?”

“Oh God!” the cry slipped out involuntarily, KB took a deep breath, “You became pregnant and gave birth in front of the entire School, er Nancy and Kathie knocked you out so that they could steal your boyfriend…”

“Nancy and Kathie? You mean Miss Wilmot and Miss Ferrars?”

“Yes, Miss Annersley, you met up with Dr Who and James Bond, I think when it finished you were being attacked by Daleks and Cybermen as well as discovering a number of secret agents who were all your sons…” KB’s voice trailed off, she looked across at the Deputy Head, Miss Annersley’s face was impassive.

“Tell me KB,” Miss Annersley’s voice remained quiet, “do you happen to know who was responsible for starting this ‘drabble’?”

KB turned white once more, “It was me,” she admitted wretchedly,

“It was I, KB, as Head of the English Department, I cannot permit poor grammar!”

The German Mistress nodded, then, “but Miss Annersley, I only posted a few bits on there, the other CBB’ers all added to it. And I can write good chalet school stories, I’ve had one published, and I’ve got a serious drabble going at the…” she stopped aghast,

“Go on KB, you were going to say you have a story now? What is it called?” Miss Annersley was intrigued, if anything the German Mistress looked even more horror struck at the thought of relaying the title of her current story!

In the silence, there was a sudden knock on the door and Miss Wilson came in, “have you finished tormenting Katherine yet, Hilda?” she asked a grin on her face.

KB looked across from one to the other, Miss Annersley was smiling, “we both read the entire ’drabble’ last night, KB, I don’t think we’ve laughed so much for years! I’m afraid I couldn’t resist asking you to explain.”

KB looked at both her seniors, “then y-y-you don’t mind?”

Miss Wilson shook her head, “it beats all the ones I’ve been reading recently where I’m killed off!” she grinned, “no idea what I’ve done to upset people, but it’s always me, never Hilda!”

“I’m sorry Katherine,” Miss Annersley looked over at KB, “I couldn’t resist! Oh and your other story? - it’s a great pity that that particular story didn’t have any impact while we were in the fictional world, it may have changed a certain person,” she smiled a little sadly.

The German Mistress smiled and left the Study.

*Next bit - only little, more tomorrow!*

The next morning found the Deputy Head working through her correspondence with practiced ease. She had noticed that the Head was having some difficulty managing all her post and had a quiet word with Rosalie. Now fully half of Madge’s post now found its way onto Miss Annersley’s desk. So far the Head had not noticed, although she had wondered somewhat about the reduced size of her post bag! While going through a number of letters Miss Annersley came across one addressed to herself and sent special delivery; it was from America.

That evening, as neither of them was on duty, Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson left the School around 8pm. Once back in their cottage Miss Annersley showed her friend the letter,

“This appeared today, Nell,” Miss Annersley passed across the letter - the pair of them were sat in the lounge sipping Baileys.

Miss Wilson took the envelope and removed the contents, she whistled, “Hilda, this is a certified cheque for one million American dollars!”

Miss Annersley nodded, “You see who it’s from? The Microsoft Corporation. Madge said she had written to them enclosing a photocopy of the documents with the MD’s signature. This is their response,”

Miss Wilson was reading the letter that had also been enclosed, “Hmm, says here that this is no admission of the authenticity of said documents and the payment is purely one of goodwill,” she paused to read the cheque again, “that’s a heck of a lot of goodwill! What are you going to do? Accept the money or hire a lawyer?”

“Neither,” Miss Annersley sounded determined, “as soon as practicable, I’m going to fly to America and see this Mr Gates,” she turned to her friend to explain, “do you have any idea just how big this corporation is? I read the financial pages of the London Times, Microsoft’s ‘Bill Gates’ is worth more than 400 billion American dollars! That certificate Elinor left me, by rights, is worth 4 billion!”

*Sorry it's late but been busy writing!*

The next day, before Miss Annersley had had the chance to speak to the Head about flying to America, Madge Russell received a letter addressed to the Headmistress of the Real Chalet School. On opening it she realised that the letter was actually meant to be for Miss Annersley and went next door to deliver it. Miss Annersley read through the letter swiftly then looked across at the Head,

“I’m sorry, I read it before realising that it was addressed to you,” Madge Russell began,

Miss Annersley dismissed that, “Not a problem, Madge, but it looks as though the Easter Holidays will be busy,” she explained about wanting to visit America.

Madge Russell sat in one of the chairs opposite her Deputy Head, thinking, “Hilda, I think that matter should be dealt with as soon as possible, and as it will mean taking a long distance flight anyway, you may as well include visiting America. The School will manage - you should only be away for 7-10 days at most,”

Miss Annersley managed to arrange her work schedule so that she could leave for America the following Monday, she was somewhat surprised when Miss Wilson informed her that she intended to accompany her friend,”

“Nell, that’s not necessary, and it would leave Madge understaffed, it’s hardly fair on her, depriving her of her two most Senior Staff for ten days,”

“I’ve cleared it with Madge, and Ruth is happy to stand in.” Miss Wilson returned, “I’m dying to see how you deal with the Microsoft Company and I think you may need moral support for the other business. Madge agrees on that last point.”

The main Microsoft Building was an exceptionally large, modern and imposing building. The man on Reception did not, initially, consider that the two English women standing in front of him would pose any problem.

“Look, ladies, as I’m sure I’ve already explained, Bill Gates sees no one without an appointment. I can make you an appointment with one of his Personal Assistants sometime next week.” He smiled at the two women slightly, then his smile faded; from the white haired woman he was receiving a wide grin with more than a hint of sympathy in it! He turned to look at the other lady, slightly taller and a lot thinner, the woman looked across at him calmly, her blue-grey eyes staring directly toward him, their expression suddenly reminding him of times as a young boy, when he would be reprimanded by the local cop.

“My apologies, Terry,” the woman looked at his name badge, “perhaps I did not make my request clear. I thought that I had asked that I be taken to see Mr Gates, the Managing Director, today. Somehow it appears that I asked to see some ‘Personal Assistant’ next week.”

Terry flushed, “now look, you’ve not even told me why you want to see Bill Gates!”

“I was not aware that Mr Gates wished his private business discussed in public, Terry, however I have no objection, I wish to see him to thank him for some money that he sent. If I do not get to see him today, I will be more than happy to find somewhere far more public. I should imagine there are any number of newspaper and television companies nearby!”

The Receptionist gulped and went away to phone someone, Nell Wilson sidled up to her friend, “you really do tell lies, Hilda, you’ve no intention of thanking him for that cheque,”

“Yes I have, Nell, I’ll then ask him where the rest of the money is!”

It took some time but, eventually the two women were taken to an office inhabiting the penthouse suite. A PA showed them in and then closed the door behind them, a young looking man, bearded and wearing glasses, was seated at the desk, his dress was casual but his demeanour was not.

“Do come in, ladies, after bullying your way past my receptionist, three PA’s and a security guard I can give you a little time.”

Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson walked up to stand in front of the desk,

Post by Lesley on Nov 13th, 2003, 9:25pm

“Now I understand you are Hilda Annersley and Helena Wilson,” the man started, “you have five minutes, Hilda, so shoot!”

Miss Annersley’s eyes flashed, “Mr Gates there are very few people who have the privilege of addressing me by my Christian name, within the entire American continent, with the exception of Miss Wilson, there are none.”

Bill Gates looked across almost scornfully until he registered the blue-grey eyes gazing at him, he swallowed, “my apologies, ladies, it is the way I have always conducted business, however if you wish to remain formal, Miss Annersley, Miss Wilson, please sit down,”

The two friends did so and Miss Annersley retrieved the certified cheque she had been sent. “Mr Gates, do you know anything about this?” she asked softly, she passed the cheque across.

The man looked at the cheque, “Miss Annersley, however informally I like to conduct business, I generally know when a cheque for that amount is made out to an individual. Is there a problem?”

“There is, Mr Gates, I am no mathematician, however I was always of the impression that one percent of four hundred billion came to rather more than one million.”

Bill Gates smiled, “you didn’t really think you’d get that, now did you? For an intelligent woman that is somewhat naïve!”

Miss Annersley nodded, “Yes, it was rather naïve; however I was rather relying on the public image that is presented of the founder of the Microsoft Corporation. Mr Gates, that is your signature and your thumbprint on the certificate. I’m sure your lawyers have already established that, otherwise I would not have been sent this cheque in the first place. May I ask, do you remember the money my friend gave you? Was it money that, at the time, you needed?”

Bill Gates sat back in his chair, “I was fourteen years old and yes, at the time I desperately needed the money, but it was only the equivalent of eighty dollars - I think getting one million back is a fair investment!”

“It seems then that your public image is rather at odds with your true persona, Mr Gates,” the words were uttered softly and the man behind the desk flinched slightly,

“Look lady, you’re lucky to be getting that, I’m a business man, not a bleeding-heart. I could have just let the lawyers deal with it you know. It could have dragged on for years, raking your name and reputation through the mud and you’d have got nothing! Is that what you wanted? The chance to experience Hell on Earth!”

His words galvanised Miss Wilson who shot him a look of such anger that he sat back in his chair, attempting to get away from it. The woman then turned a concerned look toward her colleague. Miss Annersley was sat with a slight smile on her face,

“Mr Gates, I have already experienced Hell, nothing in this World can frighten me!” the words were uttered with absolute conviction.

Bill Gates sighed, “look, I do not want this to go to court, I know Microsoft is taken to court for any number of reasons hundreds of times a day, but this story would not be good for the company. I should tell you though, Miss Annersley, I have no intention of giving you four billion dollars!”

“Mr Gates I never expected you to,” Miss Annersley smiled slightly, “perhaps a compromise?”…

The meeting lasted another hour with both Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson putting forward suggestions. There was some furious negotiation. Bill Gates made notes on his laptop;

“Alright ladies,” he said at length, “Microsoft will fund scholarships to your School, - 10 each from USA, UK and Australia, said scholarships to be all inclusive. We will also ensure both your School and Hospital have the very latest, state-of-the-art computer equipment installed, for security, patients and the pupils’ use. This will include the latest software and hardware with regular updates. Anything else?”

Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson looked at one another, “one thing, Mr Gates,” Miss Annersley indicated the cheque, “could you please dispose of that and make out another, to the same amount, but instead of my name please write Amnesty International?”

Bill Gates did so and passed the new cheque across, “I’ll get my lawyers to put all of this into legal format Miss Annersley, and send it to you in Australia for signature. May I ask, why didn’t you ask for something for yourself?”

The two women smiled, Miss Annersley spoke, “There is nothing more in this world that either of us require, Mr Gates,” she said softly.

*Here you go Vikki! Just to let you know that the last post for this will be tomorrow (well now later today!)*

After collecting their baggage and strolling through Customs; Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson left the terminal building and entered the cold early morning air of Zurich.

“We can easily arrange transport to Interlaken from here, Nell,” Miss Annersley nodded, “those coaches travel there regularly,”

The two women made enquiries and discovered that the next coach to leave for Interlaken, was in just under an hour’s time, they purchased tickets and decided to find somewhere for Fruhstuck. Seated in a nearby Café, with their obligatory coffee and croissants, Miss Wilson returned again to the conversation they had been having, on and off, ever since leaving America.

“So why do you think Gwynneth wants to see you, Hilda?”

“I’ve told you before, Nell, I’ve no idea. You saw the letter, it was hardly informative.” Miss Annersley looked across at her friend, “Why are you here, Nell? I know you said it was just curiosity and moral support, but there’s something else,”

Miss Wilson smiled, “I can’t hide much from you, can I? Well I just thought I’d see if something was possible that’s all!”

“Something? What?” Miss Annersley looked across at her friend who was grinning at her, she suddenly remembered something, “Oh no, Nell Wilson, you’re not to even think it. If you try removing ‘a pound of her flesh with blood from close to her heart’ she’ll die!”

“Yes, I think that was the general idea, Hilda,” Miss Wilson appeared totally unruffled at the suggestion, “it’s only fair, she shot at me and intended to kill me, I’m just going to return the favour.”

“You are not going to do this, Nell!” Miss Annersley’s voice was stern and her friend’s grin grew even wider,

“We’re not in the School, Hilda, and you’re not Head anyway. You give me one good reason why I shouldn’t go ahead and do this - you’d not have to visit her then, come on, a good reason!”

Miss Annersley looked across at her friend in exasperation, “A good reason?” she said, “very well - I do not want to have to spend the next 10-15 years travelling to Switzerland once a month to visit you in prison.”

Miss Wilson considered this statement for a moment, then, “OK, that’s a good reason, Oh very well, Hilda, I’ll not kill her!” There was a pause for a while, then, “ I will think about it though!”

Miss Annersley smiled, “you may think about it with pleasure, Nell,” she said soothingly, she looked across at her partner and continued under her breath, “Idiot!”

Once they had arrived at Interlaken they checked into the Grand and made their way to the hospital. Inside, after explaining their identity and showing the letter, they were ushered into the Medical Director’s office.

“Fraulein’s, I am more than happy for you to visit Gwynneth Lloyd,” he began, “but unfortunately she is still rather unstable, she will be restrained - oh not the straitjacket - just enough to ensure that she cannot harm you. I understand that she has had grievances against both of you in the past?”

“She has, doctor,” Miss Annersley replied, “In a way I was surprised to receive this letter, however I am willing to at least listen to her,”

“Well just so you are aware that she is considered dangerous,”

Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson were shown into a small room, the room had a table and some chairs. In one of the chairs sat Matron Lloyd. She appeared the same in appearance to both women, fairly small and wiry, her hair seemed more shot with grey but otherwise she was fit. They could both see that a cuff around her right wrist fixed her arm to the chair.

As they walked in the woman seated looked up and her face split into a sardonic smile. “Well it’s about time, Hilda,” she said softly, “and Nell too - my aim must have been off that day then!”

“No Gwynneth, I just knew to drop before you shot!” Miss Wilson’s reply,

Miss Annersley sat in one of the chairs opposite and signed for her friend to do likewise. “I received your letter, Gwynneth,” she began softly, “I must admit it seemed somewhat incongruous, receiving a letter from you requesting my help! How did you even know that I had escaped?”

“I didn’t, but I thought there was a chance. One of the nurses here is from Australia, she gets newspapers sent from home. The Real Chalet School was pictured in it, I felt that if you’d escaped, that’s where you’d be.”

“So what do you want then Gwynneth?” Miss Wilson spat the words out, “Madge Russell told us of the deal she’d made - and then you gave her false information. Why should we help you?”

“Madge Russell, like all of you, is too honourable, why the hell should I have given all the information? Yes I knew you could be rescued across that curtain, and I knew how, but I wasn’t going to give that away. Far better to hold something back, then I’ve got an advantage!”

“And have you an advantage now, Gwynneth?” the soft tones were from Miss Annersley,

Matron Lloyd sighed, “No Hilda, seeing that you’ve all escaped my advantage has gone. Had they thought to contact me while you were still trapped I could have told them how to get you out far sooner, but they didn’t! Still I’m sure ten weeks in the company of Elinor did you no harm!” She laughed.

Nell Wilson stood up, “Come on Hilda, there’s no way we need to sit here and listen to this evil b*itch, you and Elinor were well suited Gwynneth,”

“Of course we were!” Gwynneth Lloyd smiled.

Miss Wilson turned to Miss Annersley, “Come on Hilda,”

Miss Annersley shook her head, “Why did you contact me Gwynneth?”

Matron Lloyd looked across at her, “do you know the term psychopath, Hilda?”

The English Mistress nodded,

“Well that’s the label they’ve tagged on me,”

“I don’t understand, Gwynneth, Madge told me that your plan was for some fairly mild and treatable condition, a psychopath is neither,”

“I’m aware of that you fool,” the matron sounded angry, “I was betrayed by one of the other patients here, he told me he was a psychiatrist and gave me the symptoms to fake, I didn’t realise until the diagnosis was confirmed that it was too late!”

Miss Wilson looked puzzled, “I don’t understand, why is having this label so much worse than others?”

“A psychopath is considered to be incurable, Nell, if that person has already killed…”

“Exactly!” the matron almost shouted the words, “they think I’m too ill to stand trial - which I wanted - but the condition is one that will keep me in here for the rest of my life. I’ve tried showing them that I was faking the symptoms - but they consider it’s all further manifestations of my condition,”

“I repeat, Gwynneth, why did you write to me?”

“Because I need your help, Hilda! You can persuade these people that I’m sane enough to stand trial, I’d rather spend 10-15 years in prison to a lifetime in an insane asylum, you don’t think I’m crazy do you?”

Nell Wilson laughed, “Sounds like an appropriate reward Gwynneth! She looked toward her friend and was horrified to see that Hilda was seriously considering the matron’s request,

“I assume you would want an independent assessor Gwynneth? To examine you and pronounce verdict? I could arrange for one, ensure it was someone so well respected that the hospital authorities would have to listen? I’m puzzled as to why you haven’t arranged this yourself.”

“Because I have no contact with the outside world, and am unlikely to ever have any. The letter to you was sent only because I told the Medical Director that we used to be friends,”

“Quite correct, Gwynneth, we did used to be friends,”

“So will you help? I’ll serve my time in prison, but I don’t deserve to be in a nut-house when I’m not insane!”

Miss Annersley nodded in agreement, “I do not believe you to be insane, Gwynneth, and spending the rest of your life in here…”

She stopped as Nell Wilson suddenly grabbed her arm and pulled back to the far wall, “Hilda, please tell me you’re not considering this? After all she did? Even you are not that soft hearted!”

Miss Annersley shook her friend’s arm off and walked back to stand opposite the Matron,

“Why do you think that I’ll do this, Gwynneth?”

The matron smiled, “Because it’s your nature, justice with mercy,”

“I see,” Miss Annersley stood looking at the matron for some time, then, “you have a great many deeds that require forgiveness, Gwynneth, and for me to do this for you I will have to first forgive your deeds. I find that I can forgive you for the role you played in attempting to keep the chalet school trapped in a time warp, for the draconian measures you took to ensure nothing modern entered our world. I can forgive you for siding with Elinor from the start, and suborning Joey to your cause. For spying on us and attempting to stop our escape. I can even forgive you for holding me in isolation for three weeks, even though you must have had some inkling of how I would suffer.” Miss Annersley stopped for a moment, she glanced across at Miss Wilson and continued softly, “I can also, just, forgive you for attempting to kill Nell, although that is extremely hard.” she stopped and reached across to squeeze Miss Wilson’s shoulder, Miss Wilson grinned.

“So you’ll do it then? I thought so, could rely on…” the matron’s voice stopped as Miss Annersley slowly shook her head,

“There is one thing for which I cannot grant forgiveness, Gwynneth,” she said softly, “you shot one of my pupils and left her to die. She survived due to a combination of luck, good nursing, the Grace of God and, ultimately, 21st Century medical care. But you left her to die.” Miss Annersley’s voice grew quieter, more intense, “I do not consider that you are insane, Gwynneth, nor do I believe you have any mental illness, I believe that you are solely an evil woman. Now, officially you do not belong here, you are sane, however, I believe that pure justice may be best achieved by leaving you here for the rest of your life.”

The two women left the room, ignoring the screams of rage from the matron. Once outside the hospital Miss Annersley turned to Miss Wilson, “You don’t seem surprised at my decision, Nell,”

Miss Wilson smiled, “Hilda, the one thing I know about you is the regard in which you hold your responsibilities toward your pupils. I knew that you could never forgive that! I am rather peeved that you could forgive her trying to kill me though! And after all I’ve done for you!”

Miss Annersley sighed, “Nell, you shouldn’t have been there in the first place, remember?”

Miss Wilson stopped for a moment, “Ah, yes, alright, point to you!” She smiled and linked her arm through her friend’s, “come on, let’s go home!”

“Our cottage, Nell?”

“The School, Hilda, that’s always been home for both of us.”

Ahem, excuse me, will all impressionable Juniors look away now? Thank you.

B-it-c-h.

All right, you may look back now.

Edited to add: Oh, that's funny! What a stupid thing the censor is!

Who KB?

*Oh how funny - when I quoted KB's last post it came up as b*tch then reverted to pregnant dog once I posted!*

Thank you Lesley!!! *beams happily* *then looks sad when she remembers this is ending later today!!* :'(

*wonders whether KB is calling Lesley or Matey or someone else a pregnant dog?*

Actually, I was calling Matron that, after only reading the first of the three parts Lesley posted. While I was loading the page and writing the reply, Lesley posted the others, and I was glad to see that Hilda shared my opinion!

Apart from anything else, and quite seriously, I would hate to think we would insult each other like that, or that anyone would do anything to deserve it!

I'm going to miss this thread sooooooooooooo much  :'(  :(

But it's all ending perfectly....

... Lesley, you're truly miraculous.  I hope you'll be enjoying a very well-earned rest after all this!

Equally seriously, I agree with you totally!
I mean, fair enough calling someone a ratbag or the like, if they're being tantalising, or doing something horrid in a drabble, but there's no need for anything stronger!

I don't think we really need to worry, as the mods could delete the offending posts and Liss could remove the member from the list.

That's true! I tend to forget we have that option!

Well Vikki, you certainly take advantage of the 'ratbag' epithet. I'd never even heard that one til I came here! ;)

*wonders who holds the unhappy distinction of being called 'ratbag' by Vikki the most in the shortest space of time?*

Lesley, I will be so sorry when this is over. And that reaction to Gwynneth is 'justice'- even Hilda knows that mercy can be taken a step too far..

Then again, you could always write a sequel!

*Disappears before Lesley starts foaming at the mouth at such a suggestion!*

I frequently delete posts that are made when I have missed the next page of a thread, or when I am posting a part for a round-robin story, only to find that someone else (usually you) has got in ahead of me. And I modify my posts even more frequently.

And Lisa, I think Lesley will have a nervous breakdown at your suggestion. *goes off to look for straws for Lesley's hair*

Oh, well I use those, too. I've never felt the need to delete someone else's posts (yet!)

*Wonders what 'Billy' would think to that?  Probably wouldn't appreciate it quite as much as I did ;D

*Three cheers to Hilda for giving the money to Amnesty.

*Another three cheers to Hilda for not being totally forgiving.

*Three million cheers for Lesley for writing this story - just wish it wasn't ending.

Lesley - Please can you keep the link to the story until at least the middle of December?  I really want to be able to read it again and again but I'm not sure if this computer will successfully download something as long as that.

Oh. Lesley - brilliant!

What a fitting punishment for Matron - I'm glad she wasn't allowed to wriggle off the hook!
And glad that someone could get the best of Bill Gates!

This has been a truly fantastic story - humour, drama .... the full gamut of human emotions (and that's just us reading it)

No idea how you're going to wrap up the last bit but I know I'll be very sad to see the end of it

Thanks you sooooooooo much for keeping me entertained over the last 2 months ....  :)

Lesley, please tell us that you've had some more brilliant ideas for continuing this. Please, please, don't let the next post bring this to an end.

I loved it when Hilda got the best of KB, Matey and Bill Gates. Has anyone else in recorded history ever managed that?
