She's away, as she mentioned somewhere. She wanted me to leave the bit about the cesspool here, but I couldn't work out how to archive half a thread, so did it all.

Maybe you could paste that last post onto this thread so that it's there when Lesley's back.

Carolyn - Good idea KB. I have posted below the last few posts that Lesley wanted saved. They have my name, but are all her work.

Next installment!*

The Head stood up and turned to face Alison and Helen; the Prefects could not meet her gaze but instead looked down at the ground,

“This is the second time that the Prefects have been responsible for restraining me,” Miss Annersley’s voice was quiet and carried only to the two girls, “the first time there was justification, on this occasion you disobeyed my direct orders, there will not be a third time. Alison, Helen, I appreciate you had good intentions but you will never attempt that again, had Miss Wilson died…”

The Head broke off and took a breath, “now, we need to keep searching,” she conferred with her colleague for a few minutes, retrieving all the information relating to the conversation between Matron Lloyd and the Deputy Head. Miss Wilson was then taken, protesting, back to the School.

A swift meeting was held with the leaders of those search parties available, the rest being informed via radio. The onus of the search had changed – they were now looking for Carol Leigh – certainly injured, possibly seriously. Everyone was aware that time was against them, especially as the evening started to draw in around 2000hrs. Eventually Miss Derwent spoke to the Head,

“Hilda, we’re going to have to call off the search for tonight, everyone is getting tired and hungry and it’s too dark to see properly. We can resume first thing in the morning.”

The Head nodded quickly and the search parties were called in, the Geography team being careful to mark off those sections that had been searched on their map.

That night, perhaps two in the morning, Miss Wilson awoke needing a drink. She had insisted that she did not need to be in the San, but instead could return to her room in the Head’s suite. Her shoulder was bandaged and she wore her left arm in a sling, but was fairly mobile. She went into the small bathroom to get a drink, on her return she noted that the Miss Annersley was not in her room and went in search of her friend.

The Study door opened and Nell Wilson stood at the entrance, she looked in; Miss Annersley was sat on the window seat staring out into the night. She turned round, “sorry, Nell, did I disturb you earlier?” she asked softly.

“No, I was thirsty, when I got up for a drink I noticed you weren’t in your room,” Miss Wilson came and sat beside her friend on the window seat, “Hilda, what are you doing here? Do you know what time it is?”

“I can’t sleep, Nell, every time I try I see Carol Leigh’s face.” The Head took a breath then continued, “she’s out there somewhere, injured, in pain, and it’s my fault. If she dies, I’m responsible.”

“Hilda, you didn’t shoot her, that was Gwynneth, and if I ever meet up with Matron Lloyd again I promise I’ll take a pound of flesh – with blood – from close to her heart!”

Miss Annersley smiled at the literary reference from her scientist friend. “You’d better wait until you have two good arms again then!” she observed quietly.

Her face became sober once more, “Nell, I do have the responsibility, I’m the one who started all of this – on hearing about your plans with Madge. I could have remained silent. Now because of my dreams of living a ‘normal life’ without being dictated to by an author, one of my charges could be dead. That girl is only 17 years old, Nell, what on Earth was I thinking, allowing her to become a jailer for someone I had personal knowledge was evil, vindictive and violent? I stand in loco parentis for all these girls, it’s hardly the action of a true parent to place them in danger is it?

Title: Re: The Real Chalet School Mk5

“They are all aware of the danger they face, you know, do you think Carol didn’t know exactly what she was risking? Those girls are willing to do anything for you, Hilda, even brave your wrath by defying you, like Alison and Helen today! And those are not just your dreams, Hilda, everyone in the building has the same dreams, and that girl out there has them too.”

The Deputy Head paused for a moment, thinking, “Hilda, of everyone you have been the one the School looks to, Staff included, myself included. When you reminded me of my responsibilities a few weeks back, it was a wake-up for me.”

“It nearly got you killed a few days later!”

Miss Wilson smiled, “even if I had died then, Hilda, I would have had no regrets, at least it would have meant you would have survived to continue the fight. That’s why I insisted on going out there today, even though it was against your orders!” She looked across at her friend before continuing, “and why I’d do it again even if you did make me Staff Baby!”

Miss Wilson placed her arm around her friend, Miss Annersley rested her head on Nell Wilson’s shoulder “you’re just tired, Hilda, we’ll find her in the morning.” After a few minutes Nell Wilson looked down, Hilda Annersley was asleep, Miss Wilson sighed and then, careful not to wake her friend, she slowly wriggled into a more comfortable position. Resting her head back on the cushions at the rear of the window seat she closed her eyes, she was asleep in seconds…

Miss Wilson awoke just as the clock on the mantel was striking 6am; she looked around her in some confusion, recognising that she was in the Head’s Study and immediately remembering the events of the night before. She slowly sat up, wincing with the pain from her shoulder, “Hilda, Hilda, you’ve got to wake up!” she shook her friend while speaking, Hilda Annersley awoke suddenly and sat bolt upright.

“Have I been asleep?” she asked,

“For the last four hours or so,” her friend replied, “you’d better go get ready for the day, the rising bell will be going soon – you said an early start for everyone!”

“What about you?”

“I’ll be along soon – I have this wonderful excuse for being late, you see,” she indicated her shoulder,

Miss Annersley smiled and headed toward the door, as she reached it she turned, “does it hurt, Nell?” there was a mischievous look in her eyes.

“Yes, a little,” admitted the Deputy Head,

“Good, it serves you right!” the Head’s words floated back down the corridor.

*For anyone who may consider the next two posts are cruel and unusual punishment, I invite them to look at the drabble entitled 'The Chalet Horror Show or Lesley's Adventures!'*

One Melbourne Evening

“Come on in Esmeralda, the other two will be here soon,” Vikki opened the door wide,

“I know KB is coming, who else?”

“Lisa managed to get the evening off, Kathryn’s covering for her,”

At that moment there was a knock at the door and KB and Lisa appeared,

“Did you get it?” Vikki asked KB excitedly,

“Just arrived at the post office,” replied the Australian, “I’m really looking forward to trying some more of those Swiss chocolates, it’s just a pity it’s a smallish box - otherwise we could have asked more people,”

“Never mind that now, open it!” Lisa looked over at the parcel,

“Oh, by the way, everyone help themselves to drinks,” this from Vikki, “I’ve got more alcoholic stuff outside if you want it,”

“No thanks Vikki, both KB and I are on duty tomorrow morning - we’ll stick to Coke!”

All four women helped themselves to chocolates from the box and sat there in silence enjoying the rich taste.

“I think that’s the best I’ve ever tasted,” Esmeralda said slowly, “how do the Swiss do that?”

“No idea,” this from KB, “These chocolates are divine!”

The box was swiftly devoured, all four women looked around with wide grins of appreciation, “I don’t know about the rest of you but I could really do with something to eat!” this from Lisa, “Is there a takeaway round here?”

“There’s a curry house or Pizza Hut, what do you want?”

Esmeralda giggled slightly, “How about curry and pizza together?” she asked, this idea was greeted with enthusiasm by all four and Vikki and KB disappeared out to buy the food.

After eating all four decided that they needed some exercise, “I know,” giggled KB, “I’ll show you where I used to go skinny dipping as a kid, It’s not far from here!”

Somehow everything they did was a huge joke that evening, even the fact that Vikki had managed to put shoes from two different pairs on her feet was greeted with a giggle and a shrug. When Lisa fell down the stairs the others were laughing so much they couldn’t help her up for five minutes. Then when they all tried to get into KB’s car they discovered she’d left the keys back in Vikki’s place.

“Oh never mind,” she said, “It’s not far, we can walk, come on!”

As they went along Vikki was singing
“oh, the wonderful thing about yibbling,
Yes yibbling’s a wonderful thing,
Their tops are made out of rubber,
Their bottoms are made out of spring,
Their bouncy, bouncy, bouncy, bouncy, fun ,fun, fun, fun, fun,
But the most wonderful thing about yibbling is…

All four joined in for the last, “I’M THE ONLY ONE!”

They arrived at a wire fence, “Shhhh, shhhh, shhh,” yelled KB, “we have to climb this, but quietly,”

Amid shrieks of laughter the four women finally managed to climb the fence, a passing police patrol car saw them and stopped. The four women had managed to reach the pool and were halfway through undressing when the policeman appeared.

“Now ladies what’s going on here?”

“My good man,” Esmeralda was at her haughtiest, “we are planning to go for a swim, we are away from all housing, we are not causing an obstruction and we are not breaking any laws!”

“Are you from England ma’am?”

“Of course I’m from England, my good man, how did you guess?”

“Something told me so, are you all from England?”

“Not me,” Lisa put in, “I’m Irish,”

“I’m local occifer,” this from KB, “I was just showing these people where I used to go skinny dipping as a kid and we thought it would be a good idea now!” she smiled at him,

“I say you’re not causing trouble are you mate?” Vikki, suddenly belligerent, came stalking up, “I’ll have you know I can easily deal with blokes like you!” She took a determined stance, spun round, and kicked herself on the left ear. The policeman was intrigued - he didn’t think that was possible!

He tried again, “ladies, I really don’t think you’ve realised where you are standing, this is not a good place to go for a swim,”

“Are we going to take that, girls?” this from Esmeralda, they were all in a state of near undress, they linked arms and then, “one, two, three jump!”

All four women jumped into the pool, a second officer came running up beside the first, “Oh my god, they didn’t did they?”

The first officer nodded, “afraid so, you fish them out, I’m going to call the office - we’ll need our oldest paddy wagon,”

“Why can’t you fish them out?”

“Cos I’ve got the stripes son!”

Sometime later there was a knock at the door of the house belonging the Jem and Madge Russell, they both went to answer it,

“Well how on Earth should I know who it is Jem? Eleven in the evening is hardly time to go calling!”

“I just thought it was probably one of the nutcases from your school that’s all,” Jem opened the door as he said this. Outside stood a police sergeant, parked in the road was an extremely old paddy wagon.

“Pardon me sir, ma’am, could I ask if you are Mr Jem Russell, owner of the Golf and Fitness Store, and Mrs Madge Russell owner of the Real Chalet School?”

Jem nodded, “yes officer, is there a problem?”

“Well sir, we thought we should return these four to you - apparently two are employees of yours Sir, while the other two are School mistresses a your school Ma’am.” He retrieved a bundle from the front of the van, grimacing as he did, when he returned to them the Russells noticed his eyes were watering.

“These are their clothes ma’am, likely they’ll want to clean up a bit before putting them on, his companion was opening up the back of the wagon as he said this and the Russells were suddenly aware of an overpowering stench as four figures, wrapped in blankets, stepped out.

“Good God,” Jem Russell clasped his handkerchief to his nose and mouth, they smell like they’ve been swimming in a cess pit!”

“Ah yes sir!” the sergeant agreed, “that’s exactly what they’ve been doing! Confidentially sir, ma’am, I think they’ve been taking something illegal, I’ll let them off with a warning this time - chiefly because I don’t want them anywhere near my station - but you might like to find out exactly what they’ve been taking!”

Madge and Jem Russell looked at the forlorn figures on their lawn, “they are not coming into the house, Jem,” Madge managed to gasp through her hands, “take them round the back, we’ll try and see what the garden hose will do!”

The following morning at breakfast saw an extremely subdued Lisa and Kb at the Real Chalet School, in fact Lisa disappeared halfway through breakfast looking very ill.

“What happened to you two last night?” Kathryn whispered across the table, “you both look like death warmed up!”

“I don’t want to talk about it!” KB was very reticent.

Jennie stopped by to talk to KB, “Madge told me what happened KB, you’re going to need some jabs - Hepatitis A, possibly B, typhoid, polio and tetanus - let Lisa know will you?”

“Oh I nearly forgot, KB,” this from Carolyn, “there was a message for you from one of the English CBBer’s, said to tell you not to eat those chocolates as Customs had discovered some of them were laced with marijuana, advised that you get yours checked.”

KB nodded glumly, “who was the message from?” she asked.

“Lesley.”

*Hello everyone! Miss me? Next installments!*

The search recommenced directly after Fruhstuck, search parties moving swiftly to the spots they had vacate the night before. Against medical advice from Matron Henschell, Miss Wilson joined the Head in the Centre. However it wasn’t for another two hours that suddenly news returned that Carol had been found.
Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson ran over to the area, they saw Matron’s Henschell and Rider knelt beside a body on the ground, using the equipment in their medical bags. As she saw them arrive Matron Rider stood up and went to meet them.

“She’s alive,” Grace Rider was very sombre, “but she’s been badly hurt, and has lost a lot of blood, the bullet, we think there was only one, entered the abdomen.”

“Is she awake?” Miss Annersley asked worriedly,

“Yes, she keeps drifting in and out of consciousness. She knows we’re here,” the Matron paused then continued, “she was asking for you, Hilda,”

Miss Annersley nodded, she turned to the Deputy Head, “Nell, get the rest of the School back to normal activities, ask a few of the girls to remain as stretcher bearers,”

Miss Wilson nodded and stepped back to relay instructions, Miss Annersley walked forwards towards the figure on the ground. She knelt beside Carol, trying to ignore the evidence of the gunshot wound and the blood, “Carol, Carol can you hear me?” the Head’s voice was pitched, as always, rich and deep, the figure on the ground responded.

“Miss Annersley? Is that you?” Carol twisted her head round so she could see the figure kneeling next to her, “Oh, Miss Annersley, I’m so sorry, she escaped and I couldn’t stop her. She’s got the gun!”

“Relax Carol, it doesn’t matter! She’s gone now – she’ll not hurt you any more – I promise.” Miss Annersley replied swiftly, “Now you have to hurry up and get well, I need all my Prefects.”

“I’ll try, Miss Annersley…” The girl’s voice trailed off, and her eyes closed, Hilda Annersley looked over with alarm at the two Matrons.

“She’s unconscious, Miss Annersley,” this from Barbara Henschell, “and we’ve got to get her back to the San,”

The Head nodded and stood up, stepping back out of the way while the Matrons arranged a stretcher for the girl, Miss Wilson joined her and they followed the procession back to the School.

Over the next few days the matrons did the best they could with limited resources; Miss Annersley had obtained a medical supplies catalogue and invited Barbara Henschell to order from it - the resultant IV fluids, analgesia and antibiotics helped but did not stop Carol Leigh’s slow deterioration. After consultation between the Head and Miss Wilson it was decided that one of the matrons should be shown the computer and allowed to consult directly with medical personnel on-line. Barbara Henschell admitted to being the one with the most medical knowledge - the other matrons agreed - therefore she was introduced to the Head’s secret.

Barbara spent long periods in consultation with Daisy Venables and ordered more equipment, including a method of checking someone’s blood group. Miss Annersley advised the School that all over the age of 18 would be asked to volunteer - everyone did. Those who had not yet reached 18 years - especially the Prefects themselves - were insistent that they also be tested, but the Head remained adamant. She also refused to entertain Miss Wilson’s demand that she too be tested, remarking that her friend had already been careless enough to lose some of her own blood! Carol was then given a blood transfusion from some of those with the same blood group- she had a total of five pints transfused. This appeared to stabilise her for a time but, as Barbara remarked to both Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson, there was only so much that could be done. Carol required 21st Century medicine, surgery and care in an Intensive Therapy Unit. Without them all the chalet School personnel were doing was delaying the inevitable.

Miss Annersley spent most of her time by the girl’s bedside, being persuaded to leave by Miss Wilson only to eat and sleep. She was sat in the room late one morning when another figure entered; expecting the Deputy Head, she did not look round. It was therefore a surprise when EBD addressed her…

“She’s dying Hilda, isn’t she?” the author’s tones were soft,

Miss Annersley looked up, “Yes, Elinor, it will take some time, but she is dying,” the Head’s eyes darkened as she said the words.

“Come with me, Hilda,” still the same soft tones, “I have a proposition for you,”

Miss Annersley followed the author out into the corridor, they stood next to a huge sash window, EBD looked across at the Head,

“I can save her, Hilda, I’m an adept at producing miracle cures after all, I only need to think it through and she would be well once more.”

“And the price, Elinor?” Miss Annersley’s voice held only a shard of hope,

“Why for everything to return to the way it was, Hilda, no more rebellion, no attempts at escape, a return to the proper chalet school,”

Miss Annersley stood looking out of the window for some minutes before replying, “No Elinor, I cannot meet that price, and I’m certain that Carol would not want to live under those conditions,” she paused for a moment then continued, “I will make you a counter-offer though. If you heal Carol and allow everyone else to escape to the Real World; I’ll stay and be your perfect headmistress once more.”

“Hilda no!” Unnoticed by either woman Miss Wilson had appeared just as Miss Annersley had put forward her proposal, “You can’t do that…” her voice cut off as, with a slight gesture, EBD froze her in place, unable to move or speak, Miss Wilson could, nonetheless, still see and hear all that was going on.

“You would remain as Head?” mused Elinor, “but you must be aware that I would repopulate the School, would you give your word that none of them learn that they were characters in a book?”

“Yes,” the word was uttered softly,

“And would you destroy your link to the Real World?”

“As soon as I had confirmation that the others were safe, yes,” Miss Annersley swallowed hard at this condition.

EBD smiled, “Well I’m impressed at the lengths you would go to Hilda. Taking all of that into consideration then, my response must be…”

*Here you go Lisa!*

“…no, I do not accept your counter offer.” She smiled, nastily, at the Head, “you see it’s still not been decided if any of you will escape. And I am relishing taming all of you, and you Hilda in particular. Besides, it’s been a long time since there was a death at the Chalet School, in fact I don’t think there has been before. I’m going to enjoy this one - oh I’ll not interfere - I’ll just watch her slow deterioration, and the effect that will have on the rest of you.” The author walked back into the sick room, laughing softly, a negligent flick of her wrist released Miss Wilson.

Miss Annersley looked over at her friend just as the bell for Mitagessen rang,

“Nell, we’d better…” the Head stopped as Miss Wilson strode up to her and grabbed her by the lapel, although she still had her left arm in a sling, the Deputy Head’s strength, augmented by anger, was such that Miss Annersley was pulled, helplessly, into a nearby empty dormitory.

Miss Wilson released her hold, sending the Head staggering across the room, “what the Hell was that all about, Hilda?” Miss Wilson’s eyes were almost sending out sparks, she was so angry.

Miss Annersley swallowed, “Nell,” she began, “it was a way to heal Carol and allow everyone else to escape…”

“And you think Carol would have wanted that? Knowing that you’d be stuck here, alone, with no-one to call a friend, for the rest of eternity?” The Deputy Head paced the floor, “do you think anyone in the School would have wanted that?” her voice softened slightly and she turned away,  “do you think I would have wanted that?” She took a few deep breathes in an attempt to regain some measure of calm.

Miss Annersley looked across at her friend, “Nell, if it were the only way though?”

“Even then, Hilda, the price is too great. Good God, woman, do you have any idea of just what Hell that type of existence would have been for you? Or just how the rest of us would have been affected by it?”

“I-I-I’m sorry, Nell, all I thought of was a chance for everyone else to get away…”

“Not acceptable, Hilda, for someone who’s supposed to be so damned empathic, you didn’t consider the rest of us, how it would make us, me, feel.”

Miss Wilson turned and opened the door, walking out towards the Speisesaal. At Mitagessen, when neither Miss Annersley nor Miss Wilson appeared, Miss Derwent had repeated the simple Grace and given instructions for the meal to begin. A few minutes later Miss Wilson had appeared, obviously extremely angry about something, and sat in her chair to the right of the Head’s chair. The entire School were aware that Miss Wilson was angry and immediately started looking around surreptitiously to discover who had upset Bill.

A few minutes later, as the first course was ending, Miss Annersley appeared, as she sat in her normal seat she addressed a short remark to Miss Wilson and received an angry shake of the head in return. Miss Annersley looked very upset; some of the Prefects, thinking it was due to their friend Carol’s condition, looked over toward the Head. Miss Annersley quickly rose to reassure everyone that Carol’s condition remained unchanged.

The main course appeared, the Staff table, subdued and intrigued by an obvious row between the Head and Deputy Head, watched as Miss Wilson refused to allow the Head to help her with cutting up the food - she had done so ever since Miss Wilson had first been injured. Miss Annersley watched for a few minutes as Miss Wilson attempted to cut her food one-handed before saying in exasperation,

“Oh, give it here, Nell,” she pulled the plate over towards herself and quickly cut up the food. “I’m sorry, Nell,” she continued very softly, “you are quite correct, I hadn’t thought about the effect my decision would have on others.”

Miss Wilson, starting to eat, looked across at her friend and her anger softened slightly as she saw the obvious distress in Miss Annersley’s eyes. “Hilda, be thankful that Elinor is so evil, that she wants to witness a death, otherwise she could quite easily have accepted your proposal!”

She said no more to her friend during that meal time, obviously still not trusting herself to carry on a normal conversation.

"Tease - indicitive of various members of the CBB. Thought by some to be a necessary skill, but by others to be cruelty."

That's a very believable reaction from both of them, Lesley. Miss A *would* offer herself if she thought it would get everyone out- being an autocrat again, really! And Nell would be fuming- as you've shown her.
Brilliant. When's the next bit?

*So where can I get this dictionary? I want to know where they got my photos!  NEXT!*

For the rest of the day Miss Wilson avoided her friend; Miss Annersley resumed her vigil by Carol’s bedside, joined during the afternoon, by a number of the Prefects. While talking with Alison, Helen and Louise, Miss Annersley discovered that the phenomenon was steadily closing in, and appeared to be centring around the School.

“We’ve also thrown objects into it, Miss Annersley,” this from Louise, “and they just disappear!”

“We even had one spot where it was possible, for a short time, to see it from two different angles - and still nothing appeared - from whichever way the objects were thrown they disappeared!”

“How far away is it from School grounds now?”

“Perhaps 500 yards at most.”

That evening, Miss Annersley spent in her Study, attempting, but failing, to read through some of the English papers she had downloaded. The room seemed unaccountably empty as Miss Wilson had, unusually, spent the evening in the Staff Room. The Head had become used to her friend’s presence and was troubled by suddenly being on her own. Later, as Miss Annersley was standing by the window, contemplating whether to go to bed, there was a knock at the door, Nell Wilson stood there.

“May I come in, Hilda?” Miss Wilson’s voice was quiet and she no longer seemed angry.

The Head turned, “Of course, Nell, you’ve no need to ask!”

The Deputy Head walked up to her friend and kissed her on the cheek, “I’m sorry I was so angry, Hilda, and I’m sorry I dragged you around like so much laundry! You really frightened me!”

Miss Annersley smiled, “that’s alright Nell, I’m sorry I made the suggestion - I honestly hadn’t considered how it would affect others.”

The two women sat down in their accustomed spots and Miss Annersley opened her mini-bar…

Madge Russell had never, truly believed everyone when they had complained of the amount of correspondence that the headmistress of a school received, her only experience had been when the Chalet School had been very small, so it had come as a rude awakening when, only short time after opening the Real Chalet School, she started to receive entire mailbags full of post. Although those working in the office attempted to reduce as much as possible the sheer number of letters, it still took Madge the best part of the morning to wade her way through them.

“I believe Hilda must have the patience of a saint!” She thought to herself, “I would never have thought there could be so many useless thing that people need to write and tell me about!”

She was opening a letter with a Swiss postmark as she thought this, and glanced idly at the enclosed - it was from the Grand Hotel, Interlaken. Madge frowned for a moment then her brow cleared - oh yes, the place the CBBer’s had stayed when they had rescued the Juniors. The paperwork enclosed was obviously the hotel’s promotional material for the run up to Christmas - as the person who had settled the account they had probably been placed on an automatic mailing list.

She was about to bin the entire contents when she noticed a photocopy of the local newspaper was enclosed, although she had never lived in Switzerland herself, she knew that her sister Joey might be interested in how Interlaken had changed. She smoothed the paper out to glance over the front page. A small article at the bottom caught her eye. It was about the arrest of an accused murderer, a woman. She had been apprehended wandering around the higher alpes, completely mad. When police had attempted to stop her she had pulled out an old fashioned gun and shot one of them dead. The gun had been wrestled from her by the second officer and the woman caught. She was currently being held subject to psychiatric reports - it was thought that she was too unstable to be sent for trial. She was described as small and wiry but very strong, the name of the woman was Gwynneth Lloyd!

Sorry, to make it clear (so people don't think I'm batty) I wrote my message when the board was slow, before you posted the new part, and then left the computer to think of its sins, and in between times, you posted the next part. Thank you for letting me know, though.

And this does make things very interesting. I'm sure Hilda will worry about the girls going through with no guarantee of getting out again - so what will happen? And besides, we know EBD isn't controlling this phenomenon, so when will it stop? Is it going to envelop the whole school and wipe out EBD's control?

*Next!*

Sat together in First Class, Madge and Joey remained silent while the huge jet gathered speed and took off from Melbourne Airport. Once the plane was climbing and the seat belt sign had gone out, Joey turned to her sister,

“What are you going to do if it is Matey, Madge?” it was not the first time that the question had been asked, and Madge still didn’t know the answer.

“Joey, I really don’t know what I’ll do,” she began, “obviously if it is then Hilda and the others have an escape route, but…”

“But if the escape route turns them all mad it’s worse than useless!” finished Jo, “did you email them to ask what her state of mind was just before she leapt into the void? Nell Wilson was right there.”

“Of course I didn’t! Although as she’d just shot Nell I would think they’d be fairly biased anyway! And I’ve told no-one about this newspaper article. If anyone hears of it and releases the information onto the CBB, Hilda and Nell may be tempted to try and at least push that youngster of theirs through - if passage through the void sends you mad then she’d be better off dead!”

“Well perhaps we can discover if Matey really has gone mad,” Jo spoke quietly, “although it may be difficult to tell, at least for you, Madge, you haven’t seen her for years.”

“That’s why I wanted you along, Joey, there’s no danger for you now as Elinor has isolated the Gornetz Platz - you’ll not suddenly reappear in the story! And you were there with her until fairly recently, and even on the same side for a while,” she turned as her sister flushed red with embarrassment and gave her a little shake, “Jo, that’s all finished now,” she said gently.

Joey Maynard shook her head, “in a way I owe Elinor a vote of thanks,” she said quietly, “if she hadn’t decided to attack Robin I would never have awoken to just how evil she really is!”

Madge smiled, “well you did, and you did the right thing, silly! No-one is perfect you know - think how boring it would be if we were!” The Headmistress looked around the First Class compartment of the aircraft with some pleasure, “I must say, Joey, this flight promises to be far more enjoyable than the last long haul flight I took!”

She was watching as the stewardesses were delivering smoked salmon entrees and champagne.

“Not surprising, my dear, the last long haul flight you took was fifty years ago!”

*And what would it do to someone who was already mad? Next!*

The next two days at the chalet school dragged slowly past; the Head continued to spend a great deal of time in the sick bay with Carol, but was persuaded to join the rest of the school for some activities - they were all in need of some comfort - and even to recommence her walks with Miss Wilson. Also in the sick room was the author; but her presence was studiously ignored by everyone.

Barbara Henschell reported to Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson that she thought Carol would die within the next five days…

In the psychiatric hospital in Interlaken, the medical director was interviewing two English ladies. He was, however, pleased that they both spoke fluent German as some of the information he had to impart was rather complicated.

“You understand ladies, that this woman came to us without any form of identification upon her? She could tell us her name but refused, initially, to answer any other questions.”

“Did she really kill a man, doctor?” this from Jo,

The doctor nodded gravely, “she did Frau Maynard, she also attempted to kill his companion. I should tell you that, if we did not have serious concerns as to her mental state, she would have already stood trial and been sentenced.”

“May we see her doctor?” Madge was at her most persuasive,

The doctor thought seriously for a moment and then nodded, “Yes, I will allow that,” he began, “You understand that she is currently restrained? She has, on three occasions, attempted to injury my staff and this seems to be the only option - at least until the drug therapy and counselling have started to take effect. I understand you think she is known to you?”

“Possibly, doctor,” this from Madge, “she may be someone I once employed,”

“Well if you can fill in any of her background I will be most grateful,” the doctor walked with them to the secure area and showed them into a room, he left them inside.

Joey and Madge looked across at the figure on the floor. Gwynneth Lloyd lay on her side in one corner, she appeared to be asleep. She had on a garment both women recognised as a strait-jacket. As they looked to each other the figure on the floor opened her eyes, “well, well, I am honoured,” she said maliciously, “Lady Russell herself, and her younger sister and traitor the wonderful Joey Maynard. Have you come to gloat then?”

Madge shook her head, “No Gwynneth, we came firstly to see if it really was you, and secondly to find out how you got here!”

“Well it is me, Madge, and as to how I got here - I would have thought that was obvious!” she looked at the puzzled faces of the sisters and laughed, “what you’ve not even noticed the strange weather in these parts? I know Australia’s a long way off but I did think they had newspapers!”

“Of course we’ve heard of the strange weather here - apparently the severe lightning storms only stopped a few days ago. But what does that have to do with you escaping into the real world?”

Matron Lloyd laughed and struggled to sit up, Joey went to help her but recoiled as she saw the hate in her eyes, “don’t touch me Joey, I do not require your help!” She settled back and looked across at Madge and Joey, “you really should have stayed with us a little longer Joey, then you may have learnt something. Oh Elinor’s not much on loyalty - but she did at least keep me informed about developments - I know why those storms occurred - and that they also occurred in every location that the chalet school has been - and I know what the phenomenon currently centring on the school means. But I’ll only tell you if you’ll do something for me!”

“What do you want, Gwynneth?” this from Madge.

“I want you to tell the authorities that I’m crazy,” the matron said surprisingly, “I have no wish to spend the next 10-20 years in prison - a nice soft option here for a while - and then I make a miraculous recovery.” Her voice hardened, “the information I can give you is important, vitally so for those still in the chalet school world.”

Madge and Joey looked at each other before Madge slowly nodded, “Very well, Gwynneth, we will do as you’ve requested, now tell us!”

Title: Re: The Real Chalet School Mk5
Post by Lesley on Oct 31st, 2003, 9:41pm
*Hello all! Sorry for the late post but have just had a cr*p day followed by 3 hours on the M25 with no inspiration! Never mind - next!!!*

“I want more than that,” the matron‘s voice was sharp, “I want your solemn word of honour that, after I tell you what I know, you will speak to the Medical Director - I‘ll tell you what to say - it‘s easy enough to fake up the right symptoms - especially as one of the other inmates in here used to be a quack himself - he‘s told me all about a nice, serious condition, one that will make me unfit to stand trial, but will be completely cured in 2-3 years.”

Madge and Joey both gave their word and the matron relaxed back a little, she began.

“Didn’t it strike you as odd that those electrical storms occurred in all the places that the chalet school had been situated, Madge?” the matron looked over at the Head, “and that, while all the others faded fairly quickly, the ones in and around Interlaken continued, even stronger?”

“One of our on-line friends mentioned it the other night, Gwynneth, it was considered very odd,”

“More than that, Madge, those storms were signifying something – the end of the chalet school!”

“What do you mean?” Joey’s voice was sharp.

Gwynneth laughed, “just what I said Josephine! The chalet school will come to an end when that curtain thing reaches the school.” she looked at the sisters with a malicious glee, “don’t you see? The disappearance of the mountains, then onto the Platz itself, it isn’t that something is preventing the people there seeing any further - its that there is nothing to see! The fictional world of the chalet school is collapsing, once it reaches the school no-one - not even Elinor herself - will be able to affect the characters still left there, and they will remain in limbo, purely existing -  no more - for eternity.”

Madge looked down at the laughing woman with real hatred in her eyes, “and you feel that’s funny do you?” she said with some venom.

“Of course I do! They kept me prisoner for weeks - oh they made sure I was ‘treated humanely’ as though that condescension would make me feel grateful!”

“It was more than you deserved,” this from Joey, “I’ve no idea how Hilda could have been so compassionate after what she suffered at your hands. I certainly wouldn’t have been!” She turned away from the woman on the floor in disgust.

Gwynneth Lloyd watched her, smiling, “well I have my revenge now,” she said softly, “as I’m the one that has got through to the Real World, and Hilda and all the others are going to trapped forever in an unchanging environment. And they will be aware of it too - which makes it even better”

“They could escape in the same way that you did.” Madge suggested.

The matron shook her head, “I escaped because I was Elinor’s ally, for the rest of them there is no way through!”

*Here we go!*

Madge and Joey left the hospital very subdued; true to their word they had called the Medical Director into the small room and, with Gwynneth looking on, had proceeded to inform him that she was indeed an ex-employee. She had been dismissed due to an incident with another member of staff - nothing could be proven - but they felt she had started to show a tendency towards acting totally without conscience or morals. In this they felt they were almost speaking the truth.

“Do you think she was telling the truth, Joey?” Madge glanced over at her younger sister.

“I’m not sure Madge,” Joey sighed, “you know that woman was a huge influence on me from when she first started at the school. She started the term after you got married, remember? I was really lonely at the time, and she filled the void that you moving to Die Rosen left.”

“I had no idea that you felt so abandoned, Joey!” Madge’s voice showed her distress,

Jo smiled, “don’t worry yourself, Madge, it’s something I would have grown out of soon anyway, just that Matey saw it and helped me out. The difficulty started though when Hilda mentioned to you about her fantastic ideas that we were all characters in a book!”

“Yes, I must admit it took a long time for any of us to believe her! Poor Hilda, I’m sure she spent most of her first few terms with us being viewed as mildly eccentric! Just about the only person who believed her was Nell. It wasn’t until your miraculous recovery after falling through the ice, that we started to take her seriously,”

“Well when everyone realised that Robin had no memory of running across from the Chalet School to St Scholastika’s, nor could she remember singing to me. And there was that extra nurse who seemed to only be there to watch - never helped!”

Joey laughed and then continued, “and EBD’s disguises were never very subtle - but until Hilda arrived she had never needed any more. Anyway, once we all started actively believing Hilda’s accusations, that’s when Matey really took me under her wing - I think right from the start she was EBD’s ally - and wanted to make me one as well. For some time she succeeded!” The last said with some degree of self hatred.

Joey remained silent for some time, her sister glancing across at her with a worried expression upon her face. Eventually the younger woman shook herself and smiled, “In answer to your question, Madge, I think Gwynneth has told us the truth, up to a point, but I’m sure there’s more that she hasn’t told us! I will not believe that the rest of the School are trapped!”

Madge nodded, “we’ll email Hilda and Nell today - let them know all the information - perhaps they can make some experiments from their end, quite when they will pick up their mail I’ve no idea - that girl is seriously ill - I can’t see either of them taking time to access their messages at the moment.”

Title: They duly sent the mRe: The Real Chalet School Mk5
Post by Lesley on Nov 1st, 2003, 9:27am
*First post of the day! Off out for rest of morning - more later - minor worry - have got 'pins and needles' in left hand - hope it's not a warning of problems!*

They duly sent the message via the Hotel’s Internet Café, there had been no messages from the chalet school for a few days - the last being contact between Barbara Henschell and Daisy Venables. Afterwards Madge turned to her sister,

“Joey from the last messages we had it’s fairly easy to pinpoint where that ‘curtain’ thing has reached, do you think we could risk travelling up there to check if anything is visible from this side?”

“I assume you mean to ex-chalet school characters, Madge! I think the authorities  may have noticed if a huge curtain suddenly bisected the sky!” Jo’s face was alight with mischief. She continued, “I think, as long as we are careful, there shouldn’t be a problem - and it’s possible that we will be able to see it!”

The sisters travelled up to the Platz and tried to orientate themselves, “of course it doesn’t help that Elinor didn’t fix this location as well as some of her others,” muttered Madge as they looked around for any identifiable features. Near the town of Murren, however both Madge and Joey started to feel uneasy, as though they could feel something tugging at their souls. They both turned automatically toward the source of the feeling and started to walk toward it, linking arms for support. Some time later they rounded a corner and gasped. Less than 200 yards away they could both see a faint, grey mist reaching from the ground to the sky, it undulated softly. The mist stretched from left to right as far as the eye could see, the sisters could see through the mist that the scenery continued as before, they could even see other walkers passing backwards and forwards through the mist - they did not appear to see anything unusual.

“I wish we had one of the CBBer’s here with us, Madge,” Joey remarked quietly, “I’d give anything to know if we are the only ones who can see this!”

At that moment a group of German tourists appeared next to the women, the leader turned to the women and, in careful English, wished them good morning.

Madge smiled and replied, in German, the man looked pleasantly surprised at this and continued the conversation in German, making some comments about the scenery.

“The views from here are most spectacular, don’t you think? There was a little mist earlier but it is now clear and bright!” The mist curtain less than 50 yards from him appeared to prove the lie of that statement - but he obviously did not see it. After a few more remarks his party moved off.

“Well that answers our question,” Madge said softly, “now, I wonder if we can reach through it?”

The morning after Barbara Henschell’s pronouncement saw the Head and Deputy Head out early morning, walking. They were unable to walk far; it proved to be impossible to see further than 300 yards from the School Grounds and, when they attempted to feel further their hands were rebuffed by a mild electric shock. Trying to force the issue caused the power of the shock to increase dramatically and did not allow them to move through the phenomenon.

“Well why could Gwynneth manage it then?” Miss Wilson asked in frustration, “There was definitely no electric shock when she leapt through!”

“Perhaps you need to be in the air for it to allow you to pass,” Miss Annersley mused, she then looked round sharply and stepped in front of her friend, “No, Nell, you are not going to attempt it! Supposing it leads to somewhere far worse than this?”

Miss Wilson smiled ruefully, “There are worse places than this? Oh, OK Hilda, but you must admit it’s intriguing!”

“Very intriguing, and very worrying - what will happen once it reaches the School?”

“It does seem to be centring on us doesn’t it? I’m sure Elinor could tell us!”

Miss Annersley permitted a small smile, “Well I wish you luck in attempting to force her to tell you, Nell!”

“No thanks, Hilda, I’ve no wish for further cardiac complications!”

The rest of the day proceeded as normal - at least as was considered normal for a school still practising ‘civil disobedience’ - Miss Annersley found herself listening as various Prefects, visiting Carol, related tales of particular escapades that the girl had performed during her time as a Middle! To begin with the Prefects kept to items that were well known, causing Miss Annersley, sitting quietly toward the rear of the sick room, to smile. There came one item however that the listening Head had known nothing about!

Louise had related how, after some local policeman from Gornetz village had insulted the athletic achievements of girls in comparison with boys, Carol had climbed on top of the police station and retrieved their flag. She had then climbed to the topmost roof of the Chalet School and attached the flag to the highest chimney! As the girl finished talking of this Miss Annersley leant forwards,

“My apologies for interrupting, girls,” her voice was as soft as ever, “are you telling me that the incident with the police station flag was due to Carol, rather than local boys?”

Louise suddenly reddened, “Oh, Miss Annersley, I’d forgotten that you would have known nothing about that, weeell yes, ma’am. Carol was responsible!”

Miss Annersley looked around impassively at the girls seated around Carol’s bed, they all watched her anxiously. She suddenly gave a wide smile, “as I recall, I made representation to the mayor of that village, asking him to control his young people! It never even occurred to me that one of my own charges could be responsible. - I didn’t even consider asking!”…

The Head related this tale to Miss Wilson later that evening when they were both sat in the Head‘s sitting room, Nell laughed,

“That girl didn’t really need much control from Elinor to wreak havoc as a Middle! I don’t wonder at your description of her as one of the liveliest Middles and Seniors known!” Her face darkened slightly, “is there no hope for her Hilda?”

“Barbara doesn’t seem to think so, Nell, barring miracles.” Miss Annersley replied sombrely. “Just about the only thing we can do is pray. I feel if we had a joint service tomorrow it may unite the School.”

“No objection here, Hilda, we can both speak, ensure none of the girls or Staff consider their faith has been overlooked.” Miss Wilson stood as she said this, yawning, “I think I’ll turn in now Hilda, are you finished for the night?”

“Almost, Nell, I must pick up something from my Study first,” she walked over to the door then paused, “Nell, I think, as well as Carol, we must seriously consider that we are rapidly running out of room - the observable view is down to less than 200 yards and closing. We’ll need to decide on a plan of action.”

“Think about it tomorrow, Hilda, too tired now!” Miss Wilson waved goodnight and disappeared into her room. The Head walked over to her Study to pick up some papers, less than 15 minutes later, she too was in her room, settling down to sleep.

The following morning while out walking Miss Annersley discussed with Miss Wilson a possible way of dealing - at least temporarily - with the fact that they were rapidly becoming enclosed.

“I know it is going against all our achievements recently Nell, but the only thing that affected that oddity was when we were behaving as the chalet school. When we did that it retreated!”

“Oh it’s not that I cannot see the logic, Hilda,” Miss Wilson was quick to reply, “It just goes against the grain to do anything that will please Elinor, and how do we know that, by doing this, we’ll not be making some other situation worse?”

“We don’t, Nell,” the Head smiled slightly over at her friend, “but we know of no other situation - whereas this one is becoming critical,” she pointed to the fact that it was now possible to see only 30 yards past where the School Grounds ended.

“Very well then, call a Staff Meeting and let Ruth and the others know,” Miss Wilson grinned, “in some ways it’ll probably be a blessing - it’s difficult to relax all the time - I was starting to feel guilty!”

Back in the Real World Madge and Joey walked slowly along, keeping parallel with the grey curtain, after some minutes they entered a small hamlet, not known to either of them, the curtain seemed to run down the length of the main street. They walked along the street, able to see everything on the other side of the road but not able to reach anything. At the end of the road the curtain ran along the backs of gardens, as the two women walked along a small boy - perhaps six years old - was playing with a football, as they watched he suddenly lost control of the ball and it flew up into the sky, landing on the roof of a garden shed on the other side of the curtain.

The boy looked over at the ball in despair, then his eyes alighted on the tall figure of Joey Maynard, rushing over to her he begged that she reach across and retrieve his ball. Joey shook her head sadly, the ball and the shed were on the other side of the curtain. She stopped suddenly and replied to the boy, “if I lift you, can you reach it yourself?” the boy nodded, delightedly.

Madge watched as her sister exhibited, once again, the generosity for which she had been known while part of the chalet school series. Joey lifted the boy up and he reached across, as he did Madge suddenly gasped. Somehow, with both a member of the fictional and real world’s together reaching across the curtain, it was possible for her to see a different world. The hamlet was not visible for a small window - perhaps a foot in diameter, around the boy’s arm, and Madge saw that, instead of resting on a garden shed, the boy’s questing arm fell onto a small haystack. The boy made a grab for his ball but only retrieved hay, he looked at the hay in his hand without comprehension. At that moment an older boy, obviously his brother, appeared, the young boy wriggled out of Joey’s grasp and ran over to his brother, explaining things. The older boy, with a shy grin toward the two ladies, reached up and retrieved the ball.

“Madge,” Joey sounded almost breathless, “tell me you saw the same view that I did?”

“Yes, Joey,” Madge replied quickly, “somehow, by having both an ex chalet school character and a Real World character in contact with each other, the fictional world can be accessed. Come on, we have work to do!”

Post by Lesley on Nov 1st, 2003, 9:37pm
*Well that's nice isn't it? And there's me slaving over a hot keyboard for you! And spent £25 on a new mouse so I could continue! Don't know whether I should post this or not now - (mumble, mumble, mumble) Oh alright then!*

At a Staff Meeting convened the same morning, Miss Annersley outlined her plans to ensure the chalet school had enough room, although none of the Staff particularly liked the idea, they could also see the logic behind it. At a meeting of the entire School Miss Annersley explained the decision. Although a number of the girls - especially the younger ones - seemed disappointed, the vast majority appeared to welcome the return to a more structured day.

The one exception that was made was with respect to the Prefects - Miss Annersley spoke to them after the meeting and suggested that they instead use their time visiting their friend. The Head Girl was very grateful and thanked the Head,

“It’s especially good, Miss Annersley, because the author is no longer haunting the place!”

“Where is she, then?” this from Miss Wilson,

“Alison shook her head, “we’ve no idea, Miss Wilson, she just hasn’t been seen since yesterday afternoon!”

Miss Wilson, with her shoulder still rendering her on the sick list, was unable to teach any classes and, to begin with, was at rather a loose end. That changed when the Head had another desk set up in her Study,

“There’s nothing wrong with your right hand, Nell, and I could do with some help - I have more than six weeks of paperwork to catch up on! The only good thing at the moment is that the oddity is preventing any more post getting through!”

Miss Wilson grimaced freely at her friend, but nonetheless took on her share of the papers!

Over the next two days the success of the change in direction was evident in that the observable view increased from 30 yards to almost 500 yards once more. There was not, however, any success with regard to the condition of Carol Leigh. Both Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson visited as often as time permitted, and Miss Annersley even went out for short walks afterwards on her own, refusing her friend’s offer to accompany her.

That evening Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson were sat in their sitting room when there was a knock at the door, it was Barbara Henschell,

“Sorry to disturb you, Miss Annersley,” she began, “but I need some paperwork from your Study,”

Miss Annersley smiled, “not a problem, Barbara, I’ll come now,” she left to accompany the young matron to her Study. Miss Wilson, buried deep in the book, War of the Worlds, by H.G.Wells, barely noticed them leave. A few minutes later they returned, Barbara clutching some papers,

“Oh, before I forget, Bill,” she began, “That shoulder of yours needs dressing, if you come along now I’ll see to it.”

Miss Wilson placed her book on the side with some reluctance and followed Barbara out. Once along the corridor Barbara started acting rather strangely, she placed her finger to her lips, clearly warning Miss Wilson to remain silent. She then led the Deputy Head through the side door into the School Grounds. Once outside Miss Wilson turned to the younger woman,

“Barbara, what on Earth is all this? Why are we outside? And why do you want to dress my shoulder again? Last time you saw it you said it could be left until tomorrow!”

“It can Bill, that was a pretext,” Barbara’s voice was urgent, “firstly though, have you ever heard of the word modem?” her eyes were anxious as she said this.

“Barbara, my reply is Pentium,” returned Miss Wilson, giving the countersign to check neither was controlled, “what’s wrong?”

“Miss Annersley could not give me her countersign,” Barbara said flatly, “I wanted to access the computer this evening - speak to Daisy about if she had any further ideas for Carol. When we got to the Study I immediately thought up a sentence with my countersign in, expecting her to reply Internet straight away, she didn’t!”

Miss Wilson swallowed, “are you sure, Barbara, perhaps she didn’t hear it or something?”

Matron Henschell shook her head, “I tried again, Bill, she just totally ignored the word, as though she wasn’t even aware that it was one! You know what this means don’t you?”

“Of course I know what it means,” Miss Wilson shot back, “it means that Hilda Annersley, our Headmistress, is being controlled!”

'Cloned?' Where does cloned come into it apart from as a refugee from Rachel's Hallowe'en drabble!

Miss A is being 'controlled' by EBD - that means she is doing exactly what the author wants - she has no choice in the matter.

Similar to how Nell was controlled when Hilda was held prisoner. - about 45000 words back ;D

Title: In Interlaken Madge Re: The Real Chalet School Mk5
Post by Lesley on Nov 1st, 2003, 11:24pm
*Well Carolyn that's totally shattered my illusions! ;) Last post of the night - like Carolyn have posted lots - 3300 words - today therefore need a break!*

In Interlaken Madge Russell and Joey Maynard were both extremely busy; Madge had contacted Australia via the telephone and spoken to both Nancy Wilmot and Daisy Venables, she had also spoken to a number of the CBBer’s based in Australia. A plane had been chartered and would be leaving Melbourne within the next six hours, it would have, not only Dr Venables and her team of doctors and nurses - but a fully staffed emergency unit, capable, if necessary, of providing Surgical and Intensive care.
In addition there were a large number of original chalet school members and some CBBer’s - those who could be spared.

Joey had not been idle, she had logged on to the Net and contacted the CBB - putting out a similar message to the last time there had been an emergency situation, she wanted all CBBer’s within Europe that were able to respond, to travel to Interlaken immediately - it was hoped that the flight from Australia would arrive within 24 hours.

Once the initial contacting of people had occurred, Madge and Joey had visited the Mayor of Interlaken and spoken to the people responsible for the tourism in the area. After some discussion and a significant amount of money changing hands, it was agreed that the mountain roads and rail would remain closed to all except Madge’s ‘film crews’ - an inspired idea of Joey’s.

Now all they could do was wait, wait for the people from Australia to arrive, wait for the CBBer’s from the UK to arrive, and, most importantly, wait for Hilda, Nell, Kathie or Barbara to log on and  pick up their messages - until Madge could contact them they would have no idea that there was a significant chance of rescue just waiting for them!

Much nearer the end than the beginning! 76000 words so far!

Good (Yawn) night!

Wouldn't you like to share the shock Lesley in order to get a good nights sleep? I'm sure the lickle plot bunnies will keep you up all night otherwise. Tell you what, out of the goodness of my heart, I will let you tell ME what the shock is, just so you can share your burden.

Rachel ~ so generous it's almost unbelievable!

Tempted to point out to Lesley- just in case she misses it- that Rachel's supposed generosity is just masked self interest! :D

*Next installment!*

Miss Wilson stood, thinking furiously for a moment, “Barbara, let Kathie know this and Ruth Derwent. For now there’s not a lot we can do but the only way to break the control will be to find EBD.”

“What about the latest change in policy, Bill? That’s got to be due to EBD’s influence.”

“Perhaps, but it was a feasible suggestion anyway, something we may well have done without Elinor’s interference, no I’m more worried about what other supposedly feasible suggestions will occur!”

“What will you do, Bill?”

“Me? I’ll be going back to the Head’s suite, I cannot do anything else without arousing suspicion. Have you got a fresh bandage for this shoulder?”

The matron reached into the copious pockets at the front of her uniform and retrieved some padding and bandaging, she quickly changed the bandage,

“Most unprofessional,” she remarked dryly, “and had probably left you open to all sorts of infection!”

“Never mind - you can always treat with antibiotics!” Miss Wilson smiled, “Are any of the Prefects still with Carol?”

“There may be, I was going to chase them out on my return,”

“Well if any are there let them know I want to speak to them, I’ll do it sometime tomorrow - when I can get away from Hilda without arousing suspicion. I’d best go back now.”

“Good luck, Bill!”

For the rest of that evening and into the following morning Miss Wilson stayed with her friend. Even knowing that Miss Annersley was controlled by the author, and actively searching for signs, it was impossible for Miss Wilson to detect anything amiss - the Head continued to be the same calm, dedicated person, with the same sense of humour and sense of responsibility. Miss Wilson realised just how difficult it had been for Kathie Ferrars, all those weeks ago, when she - Nell - had been controlled.

Apart from Prayers the next day Miss Wilson found herself spending most of her time with the Head - she wondered if that was a deliberate action on the part of the author. She did however pass a message, via the Catholic mistresses, back to Ruth Derwent, instructing her to ensure the School continue acting as the proper chalet school - there was no sense arousing suspicion just yet.

Finally, after visiting Carol late that morning, Miss Annersley mentioned that she was going for a short walk, leaving Miss Wilson with a number of the Prefects. She very quickly informed them of what had been discovered.

“We can begin straight away, Miss Wilson,” Louise replied, “And a good place to start is where the Head goes to on these walks of hers!”

Miss Wilson nodded, “good, find out if she is meeting up with Elinor - but on no account allow yourself to be seen - we’ll need to discover EBD’s whereabouts and devise some method of startling her if we are to release her hold on the Head!”

She left then, satisfied that the Prefects would succeed. Barbara joined her outside for a moment, “Miss Wilson,” she began, using the formal mode of address so close to pupils of the school, “would it be possible to access the Net while Miss Annersley is away?”

Miss Wilson sighed, “I daren’t matron, the one person who has free access to the Study at any time is Hilda - if it were suddenly barred then EBD would know immediately that there was something important there!” She glanced across at Barbara and added softly, “there’s no chance of Daisy being able to help in curing Carol, is there?”

Barbara sighed, “not unless we could suddenly transport the girl into the Real World - then she’d have a chance, otherwise, no!” there was real pain in her eyes as she said this.

“Then for now we’ll leave trying to access the Net, whatever we need to talk to them about can wait for as long as it takes to sort this problem!”

Ooh, more. Thanks a lot Lesley.

I can't believe have much has happened on the board since midnight, a bare 14 hours.

Looking forward to your next thrilling insatllement. Hopr the prefects manage to come to the rescue.

Hmm, Prefects to the Rescue, why does that sound like a title?
