Title: Re: Primula "Venables"? ~ Part Three Post by Carolyn P on Jan 13th, 2004, 11:36am Yibble, yibble, yibble, what a waste of server space that could be taken up by stories instead. I think your punnishment should be to write a nice long story each, and to post it in regular installments, none of your usual tricks Vikki. |

Title: Re: Primula "Venables"? ~ Part Three Post by Rachel on Jan 13th, 2004, 11:26pm Hi guys - I have a slight problem. No I don't. I have a fekkin hoooooooooooj problem that is seriously narking me off! Word has decided it isn't happy, and isn't let me in to any of my folders inside. Therefore, I can't access bits of story I wrote earlier, can't write any more in Word, can't copy anything from Word to here and in short, can't be a drabbler! My brother says he will talk me through a fix, but not until tomorrow :( Therefore, you don't get any more story til it's all sorted out. Sorry bout that, and hope you will bear with me on this one! I really want to carry on with this drabble, specially as I know what's going to happen :) And obviously, this all applies to Holocaust too. |

Title: Re: Primula "Venables"? ~ Part Three Post by Rachel on Jan 15th, 2004, 7:08pm Well, I might be generous and stay up late tonight to write some more story - but I'm going out in about five minutes time and wont be back until after ten! However, my kiddies have an inset day tomorrow, which means no nasty alarm clocks going off in the morning, which means I can stay up a little later than normal! I also got my broadband connection up and running today, and it's wonderful! No longer do I have to click on a link, go make a cup of tea, take a bath and come back and see if it's finished loading the next page! Not that this is relevant to drabble writing, but I thought you might be interested ;D |

Title: Re: Primula "Venables"? ~ Part Three Post by Carolyn P on Jan 15th, 2004, 8:30pm I haven't found that broadband makes that much difference to the speed of this site. Title: Re: Primula "Venables"? ~ Part Three Post by Rachel on Jan 15th, 2004, 11:09pm I have a horrible feeling the continuity of this story is screwed! However, as I am writing it in bits every night, and haven't been able to write any for a couple of days, you'll have to ignore anything that fails to agree with earlier postings! ****************************************************************** Now that Jem wanted to speak, he was unable to find the right words to start telling his story. He sat twisting his fingers until Madge took pity on him and shoved a cup of tea towards him. Gratefully, he picked up the cup and sipped the tea, feeling himself calm down as he did so. The very act of sitting with his wife drinking tea over the breakfast table reduced him to something more like his normal condition and eventually he began talking in a low voice that Madge could only just hear. "Primula and Daisy have different fathers." This seemed to be as much as Jem was going to say. "I know that already Jem, Daisy told me herself yesterday," Madge said. "Yes, but that's as much as I told them yesterday. I thought Primula could cope, and I felt she had to know this sooner rather than later, before people began to talk. And people always talk, especially in backwaters like this one. I thought it would help both girls if I told them the truth, rather than them hearing half truths or out and out lies spreading round the village." "Couldn't you have told me Jem? Couldn't I have told the girls? Why did you not trust me when you trusted my sister?" Jem looked at Madge, a clear steady look for the first time in two days. "Because Joey was the one who told me," he said simply. "And at first, I didn't believe her - I thought it was a sensational story and I wondered why she was telling lies about my sister. I loved Margot, I really did. But after all these revelations, I don't think I can trust myself to remember her without hating her for the mess she has left behind." "Jem, you're jumping around - tell the story, from the beginning, straight through." "Margot moved out to Australia with Stephen Venable as soon as they were married. You know I had no contact with her the whole time after that until she popped up again in Austria. Well, with everyone telling me how much young Primula looked like me, I saw the resemblance myself. But really, when you get down to it, what is that resemblance? Prim and I both have fair hair, sure, but that's it Madge. If you look closely at her features, her build, her character, she's nothing like me - nor my sister! But both her and Daisy needed us so much when Margot brought them to me that I was thrilled to have a niece who everyone told me could have been my own child. She was, and still is, a pretty little girl, too frail, but a beautiful child. Joey was the first to spot this so called resemblance, and as she always pointed it out to people, well, you could hardly blame them if they agreed! But I did ask Margot about it before she died, I asked her outright if Primula took after Stephen at all, which she said Prim didn't. Anyway, when she died, I had Joey demanding that I let her have Daisy and Prim to live with her. I didn't tell you as we were just getting over the upset of fleeing Austria, but you have to admit, it sounds a bit bizarre - a newlywed couple asking for a teenager and a second child to move in with them immediately! So I thought I would ask Jack about it." Jem stopped and poured more tea from the pot, and sat nursing it a while longer. |
||
Title: Re: Primula "Venables"? ~ Part Three Post by Rachel on Jan 15th, 2004, 11:10pm "What happened then Jem?" asked Madge softly, knowing that what she was hearing was the truth. She had been lied to, for a long time and by the people she had trusted most by the sounds of things, but this was the truth staring her in the face. "Madge, Jack more or less insisted that I let the girls go to him and Joey. He wouldn't tell me why it was so important, but when I pushed him, he said that if you were going to be really awkward about it, they would settle for just Primula. How could I separate those girls after everything they had just been through? It made no sense at all to me Madge, and after a long time, I made Jack agree to let the girls live with us still, but to spend as much time as they would with Joey and Jack." Madge's confusion was clear on her face. This whole tale, rather than clarfiying issues seemed to be muddling them still further. Madge was no closer to working out why her sister was involved than she had been before Jem's explanations. Jem, guessing at much of this from Madge;s body language decided the time had come to be blunt. "Madge, not only do Daisy and Primula have different fathers, they have different mothers too." Madge, who had just lifted the tea pot to pour herself more tea dropped the pot in shock. It crashed to the floor, shattering and spilling tea all over the parquet. In despair Madge looked down and said the first thing that came into her head. "Two pots in two days. I do hope we don't keep this average up." Jem kept to his seat, not confident enough of his position in Madge's feelings to risk upsetting her by trying to embrace her. Madge looked back at her husband, shock and disbelief etched in her face. "Jem, are you certain of this? It's not an accusation to make lightly, especially against someone who can no longer defend herself. Are you absolutely positive?" "Beyond a doubt Madge. It's all in a letter,written and signed by Margot long before her death. In fact, it must have been written just after Primula was born. |

Title: Re: Primula "Venables"? ~ Part Three Post by Rachel on Jan 16th, 2004, 11:48pm As I said yesterday, there is something a bit squiffy about the continuity! *********************************************************************** Jem pulled the letter from his breast pocket and passed it across the table to Madge. She took it with shaking fingers and just held it without attempting to read it. "Please Madge, read it for yourself." Jem said, tired and drained and not wanting to have to explain further. "Are you sure you want me to?" Madge asked. She knew that by reading this letter, there would be no going back for Margot Venable's reputation. By reading this letter, Margot would no longer be just Jem's sister who had tragically died. Instead she would become Jem's sister who had lied to Madge. Madge would read this letter only if Jem was completely certain he wanted Madge to think of his sister in this way. "Just read it," was Jem's answer. Madge unfolded the paper gently, and read slowly through, pausing once to look over at Jem who nodded. "Dear Jem How cliched this will sound, but if you are reading this letter, it will be because I am dead. Naturally I hope therefore that you will not have to read this, but it is as well to be prepared in this uncertain world in which we live. This is a very difficult request to make, especially as we haven't seen each other for so long, and so much has changed in both our lives in those years. Now however, when I contemplate leaving my children through death, I find myself hoping against hope that you will put aside the ill feelings we have known and remember again the love we shared many years ago. I hope for the sake of that love that you will accept my children, take them in, love them and give them a home. I feel also that it is only fair that I give you a full understanding of my children, so that you will be able to explain to them if it should become necessary, as well it might given the circumstances. How I wish I needen't tell you this story, for it affects not only myself, but other people too. Oh Jem, how I hope that this letter will not be needed! I have a confession to make that reflects badly on myself, and it shames me to have to tell you that my daughters, Daisy and Primula, have different fathers. Please dear Jem, do not be angry at me when youread this, for angry I know you will be, but please read on and show your sister a little consideration before banishing all thoughts of me from your mind. You will have guessed, or been told, by now that my marriage has not been a happy one. I do not say that as an excuse for what has happened, but merely to tell you how this has happened. I ask for no forgiveness, I have sinned and I am aware of that fact. What I must tell you now however is that Primula's father is a man called Ken Mackenzie. I met him and his wife when they were travelling through Australia on their way to New Zealand. I never meant for anything of the kind to happen, but he was so kind to me, so considerate at a time I felt so vunerable, that I mistook his kindness for love. How I reconciled this with im being married, I cannot say. I think I must have allowed my own emotional needs to put aside any thought of who else would be hurt by my actions. However, I must also tell you there was another reason behind my actions, a reason I refused to accept for a long time. Looking back I realise though that this second reason was a driving force, a real thorn in my side for so many years, and in many ways, I acted brazenly in an attempt to cast out this thorn. For you see Jem, Daisy is not my daughter. Daisy is the product of a liaison Stephen had on one of his binges. He went away for several months and returned with a child. He never told me exactly who the child belonged to, but I was faced with the choice of bringing Daisy up as my own, or casting her out and treating her as a burden. I could not do that to any child Jem, and I hope and pray that you will also show the child the same consideration. I did make discreet enquiries, as would any woman faced with the same situation. Jem , oh Jem, I believe, from the bottom of my heart I believe that Daisy is the daughter of Ken Mackenzie. Do you understand now why I felt that frenzy? Can you imagine how I felt? It was as if I were being offered a chance to unite my family, make them a whole family. I have no proof of this, apart from a scrap of paper Stephen had overlooked in the basket Daisy was brought to me in. In itself, it would prove nothing, but Jem, a woman knows some things without needing them to be spelt out in black and white. So Jem, your choice now is simple. I am asking you to take my children and love them. If however you don't wish to do this, your other choice is to track down the Mackenzie's wherever they may be in the world now, and present them with two daughters. I hope from the bottom of my heart that you will take the first option, but if you feel unable to do so after all I have told you, nobody would blame you, least of all myself. Your loving sister Margot" Madge finished reading this epistle and slowly folded the pages, and handed them back to Jem. "But how did Joey find out about this?" she asked at last. |

Title: Re: Primula "Venables"? ~ Part Three Post by Lesley on Jan 17th, 2004, 12:36am I assume then that Joey found out from her sister-in-law? This explains why she and Jack were so desperate to have the girls stay with them - and why they would have settled for just Daisy as she really is their niece! Poor Daisy and Primula are not related at all! Thank you Rachel - intriguing! |

Title: Re: Primula "Venables"? ~ Part Three Post by PatMac on Jan 17th, 2004, 8:52am Well!!! I never guessed - but then how could I? You had us suspecting Jack and Jem and scratching our heads for other men from that era. Very clever! the only complaint I have is that Jem should have kept his big mouth shut! He caused unneccesary suffering and should only have told them if they were likely to marry too closely for safe genetic reasons ........................ but then we wouldn't have had this drabble! and that would have been sad for us. On the whole, I'd rather we were happy than a load of fictional characters! ::) btw Thank you (see, I did remember my manners) |

Title: Re: Primula "Venables"? ~ Part Three Post by Lesley on Jan 17th, 2004, 9:00am So why did Jem speak to Primula about the fact that she was a b*stard but not to Daisy - who was not even related to him? *Thinks Jem was unneccessarily cruel and Joey even more so as she seemed to be delighting in the predicament.* |

Is she hoping to have more claim over Daisy now? ETA and presumbaly, Jack knows about this? And if so what's his thoughts? |

Title: Re: Primula "Venables"? ~ Part Three Post by KB on Jan 17th, 2004, 11:23am Maybe Jo had only heard half the story and thought Jack was the father of one or both of the girls somehow. Or maybe she just has a lot of schadenfreude. |
||
Title: Re: Primula "Venables"? ~ Part Three Post by Jennie on Jan 17th, 2004, 12:58pm No, I think it goes deeper than that. She wanted the girls, Jem and Madge seemed to have the prior claim, so now she's rejoicing that Jem has no claim on either of them. Typical Jo, not to realise that the girls' predicament means that Madge's compassion will mean that she will cling to the girls even more to try to make them happy. |
||
Title: Re: Primula "Venables"? ~ Part Three Post by Carolyn P on Jan 17th, 2004, 1:20pm That was complicated. Poor girls. Hope they can stay with Madge. Joey and Jem shouldn't be allowed anywhere near them. Wonder what Jack will make of all this? |

I did warn you all that the continuity of this story had gone to pieces! I suppose the only way to reconcile it is that in the first posting, I did say that Daisy had dashed off to be alone when she heard the news. You could maybe take that to mean that she ran off before Jem had a chance to tell her about her own parentage? I'll write you all some more of this later on maybe, and explain about Jo's reaction further. Remember though that this is an ALTERNATIVE story, and doesn't tie in with the CS as you know it! |
