Rachel, I read an article about Orlando Bloom in a copy of American 'Elle' today in the doctor's waiting room. He seems like one of the genuinely nice guys of this world, so good luck with him.

“Primula! No!” cried Madge, afraid for what the little girl would see. A howl from Primula broke the silence in the woods.
“Aunty Madge!” she wailed.
Madge’s face became grim as she surveyed the opening. It was very narrow, wide enough for two little girls to squeeze through, but nigh on impossible for her. Regretting the few extra pounds she had put on over the past few years, Madge set her teeth, shoved back as much of the leave mould and earth as she could, and forced her way under the tree.

Primula was crouched down, hugging her knees to her chest and sobbing. Madge moved to take the small child in her arms, but stopped as she looked closely at what Primula was looking at.

It was Daisy, but a Daisy so filthy her aunt had mistaken her for a tramp. Her clothes were ripped, her hair was all over the place, she was mud from head to toe and the only clean part of her were the tracks the tears had made as they streamed down her face. She was obviously very distressed as Madge touched her lightly on the shoulder.

Madge took Daisy into her arms, nursing her as if she were a small child of Josette’s age, cradling her and murmuring the nonsense words of babyhood. Daisy stared up at her aunt with dull eyes.
“He said Prim’s not my sister,” she said at last in a slow dull voice, so unlike the normal bubbly tones. “He said we’re not sisters anymore. I’ve got nobody of my own left,” she went on.
Madge bit her lip. She knew how hard Daisy had taken the death of her mother a few years previously, and she felt an unaccustomed rush of anger as she saw what her husband had done to these two girls. With a few ill chosen words, he had shattered both the girl’s lives. Now it fell to Madge to attempt to build it back up for them.

“First thing’s first Daisy, and I really need to get out from here,” said Madge who was cramped on every side. She was cradling Daisy but had to do so with her head tilted to one side and leaning at a precarious angle due to the constriction of space.

Daisy didn’t want to move, didn’t want to be taken home to Uncle Jem, but Madge insisted the first thing they had to do was get out from under the tree. Using her best Headmistress voice, she insisted, and pushed Daisy from behind until the girl was back out of her hidey hole and sitting on the leaves. Primula followed in a matter of minutes and Madge was left with the interesting job of getting herself back out through the small gap. Coming in to the space hadn’t been too bad as gravity had lent a hand, but Madge had to negotiate her way upwards and outwards without nature to assist. It took some time, and it wasn’t until Daisy roused from her lethargy sufficiently to offer her a hand that Madge was extricated from the space.

Glancing down Madge realised just how truthfully Primula had told her it would make them rather muddy. Summer frocks were never the best things to wear for clambering around in overgrown woods, and Madge saw with a shock that it was unlikely her current frock would even be useful as floor cloths. She urged both girls to the car, taking comfort from the knowledge that no-one would be able to see just how bad they looked once they had the doors shut.

Sitting in the car, Daisy’s eyes filled with tears again. The girl couldn’t understand why her sister was no longer her sister, couldn’t understand why Joey had seemed so pleased, and couldn’t understand now why her aunty Madge looked so angry. “I’m sorry Aunty Madge,” she said at last, mistaking Madge’s silence for anger at herself.

“Sorry? YOU have nothing to be sorry for darling! Nor you!” Madge added with a glance at Primula. “Let’s get one thing clear – you two ARE sisters! Do you love Prim?” she fired at Daisy who began wailing “Yes!”
“And do you love Daisy?” Madge shot out at Primula.
“Always!” stated Prim, calm for the first time since she had heard the shattering news.

“So, you both love each other, you both loved your mother, and your mother loved both of you. Don’t you see girls?” continued Madge. “You may not share ALL your relatives, but you share all the ones who matter. You have the same mother, the same mother who adored you both equally. You are sisters, and nothing anyone says will ever alter that.”

Daisy’s tears stopped and she looked up at Madge with a dazzling smile. “Do you really mean that aunty Madge?” she asked.
“I wouldn’t have said so if it wasn’t,” replied Madge.

Daisy looked at Madge with eyes that showed age beyond her years. “It doesn’t matter that Primula had a different father,” she said simply. “My father wasn’t a very nice man. In fact,” Daisy said with a slight gulp, “my father was a horrible man and it’s his fault we’re on our own now.”
“Oh Daisy!” said Madge with a small sigh of regret that Daisy had absorbed this truth, but unable to deny it.
“And I wouldn’t have minded about Primula’s father if it hadn’t been-“ Daisy broke off and began crying again, misery etched all over her face, and unwilling to talk any further. She shook her head at every one of Madge’s entreaties to continue, until Madge turned to Primula in search of answers.

This is great, Rachel. Is there any more ?

BTW, would love to give bot Joey and Jem a good smacking for upsetting Daisy and Primula  like this.

Why do I always feel like giving Jo a good smacking? Hasn't she learned anything from the drabbles we've written about her?

Rachel, this is great. I feel so sad for the two girls. But what a tower of strength Madge is being. I don't fancy Jem's chances of getting the first word in for anything.

And as for Jem and Jo. What is their problem?  >:(

Not going to be around this evening until quite a lot later so here's the next installment.

*************************************************************************************

Madge talked until she was hoarse, trying to get Primula to tell her exactly what Jem had told them girls. Primula, cuddled up against Daisy and holding Madge’s hand, refused to tell.
“But Primula, why won’t you tell me what he said?” Madge begged, determined to help the two girls as much as possible but feeling that she was wandering blindly through a maze. “Daisy, you tell me!”
“No Aunty Madge,” said Daisy slowly, shaking her head as she spoke. “I don’t want to be rude to you, but if Prim doesn’t want to tell you, I can’t. We’re sisters,” she said clutching tightly at the little girl who was so important to her, “And sisters stick together.”

Primula nodded in agreement and from that position, despite all Madge’s entreaties, the girls refused to budge. At length, realizing that for any further information she would have to go to the source, Madge began making tentative comments about returning home for dinner and a bath.
“NO!” shouted Primula. “I don’t want to go to your house Aunty Madge! Not when HE will be there, laughing at me and calling me names again!”

This put Madge in a hugely difficult position. Under normal circumstances, Madge’s fallback would have been Joey. Never before had Madge realised just how much she and her sister relied on each other. Madge’s second choice would usually be the Chalet School, but in the middle of the summer holidays, the buildings stood empty, all the staff being away and enjoying their free time. Madge sat for a while considering her options, which became fewer and fewer as she rapidly discarded ideas. Eventually Madge realised she had one option and she would have to take it. Settling the two girls comfortably in the back of the car, Madge began to drive.

Arriving at Janie Lucy’s house, Madge hoped desperately that none of the Lucy youngsters would spot the state of the three visitors. Fortunately, as Madge drew the car to a halt, Janie herself came running out.
“Madge! How lovely to see you – you should have told me you were coming-“ Janie’s voice trailed off as Madge climbed from the car. She stared in shock at her visitor, and if her jaw hadn’t already been at it’s lowest point, it would have gone still further when Daisy and Primula clambered out of the back seat.
“But- but” stammered Janie, no longer the competent hostess.
“Do you think we could go indoors Janie? I’d rather not treat your neighbours to this pretty sight for any longer than necessary,” asked Madge with a grimace.

Janie’s jaw snapped shut with an audible clicking of teeth. In silence Janie indicated that the little group should preceded her into the house. Still in silence Janie sat down in a chair in the drawing room, watching as Madge sank with relief into a comfortable chair.
“I’m sorry about the mud Janie, hopefully it will brush off the chair. It’s all dry now anyway.” Said Madge, not completely unaware of the humour of the situation.
“But- but,” said Janie yet again.

A little twinkle appeared in Madge’s eyes. “Only goats butt,” she murmured naughtily, and enjoyed Janie’s expression once again. “Oh I’m sorry Janie, I couldn’t resist! As you can see,” continued Madge, indicating the two girls as well as herself, “We’ve been out in the woods and made rather a mess of our clothes. Would you mind if the girls had a bath and borrowed some clothes?”
“Not at all,” replied Janie in a flat voice. She stood up and led the girls upstairs where she left Daisy overseeing Primula’s ablutions and came racing back downstairs to where Madge was leaning back in her chair with her eyes closed.

Title: Re: Primula "Venables"? ~ part two
Post by Rachel on Jan 9th, 2004, 6:01pm
The action had lifted Janie out of the amazement she had felt upon Madge’s arrival, and she was able to phrase her questions slightly more lucidly now.
Madge, what on earth has happened? And don’t tell me you were playing in the woods! May I ask why you came here, for obviously there was more reason than simply wishing to take a bath!”

Madge nodded, “You’re quite right,” she said simply. “I’m not given to washing dirty laundry in public, but under the circumstances I felt you were the only one I could come to. Daisy and Primula are experiencing a little difficulty at present that means they are unwilling to go home.” This conversation was not going to be easy for Madge.
“Could Joey not help out?” asked Janie, not unreasonably in this situation.
“Actually, no.” This was the part of the conversation Madge was dreading most of all.

Janie’s eyebrows shot up before she could help herself. “Oh I am sorry Madge. I didn’t mean to be so rude, and I certainly shan’t pry into your business. You’d better tell me exactly what you need right now. Fortunately Julian took all the children away today. They’ve gone to stay with Paul and Anne for two weeks, so my time is my own and I’ll help you in whatever way I can.” Janie stretched out a hand and placed it on Madge’s arm, a symbol of unquestioning friendship.

Madge let out a sigh of relief, grateful beyond words that Janie was proving herself so supportive. “Will you keep the girls here for a few days?” she asked.
“As long as you need me to,” was the prompt reply.
“Thankyou Janie. You can’t believe just how glad I am that I came to you.”

Janie eyed Madge’s weary form. She could see how tired Madge was, and Madge felt as if she had lived through a hundred days in this one. All Madge really wanted to do at this point was close her eyes and sleep.
“May I make a suggestion?” asked Janie. “Why don’t you go take a bath and have a lie down in the spare room? I’ll feed the girls, and get them sorted for nightclothes et cetera. How does that sound?”
“Wonderful!” said Madge. “But unfortunately, I have things to do this evening. However,” she added looking down at herself, “perhaps I ought to take that bath before leaving!”

This is great, Rachel. It's good to see Madge taking charge for once. As for Jo, well, she's just showed how stupid she really is. If Jem really did call Primula a b*****d, he should have known better than to do that to a sensitive little girl. He deserves a good kick where it hurts the most.

Madge availed herself of Janie’s bathroom, and Janie managed to find enough clothes for her unexpected guest to borrow. After her hasty clean up, Madge accepted a cup of tea, but with the proviso that Janie would not attempt to delay her further afterwards. Janie, seeing a look in Madge’s eyes that she had never seen there before, agreed without hesitation.

Finally, before leaving Janie’s pretty home, Madge ran lightly up the stairs to check on Daisy and Primula. Janie had put the pair to bed and given them a light supper in bed, sensing without needing to be told that the girls needed time and careful handling. Janie asked no questions but provided the two girls with a casual consideration that was exactly what they required – no prying, no questions, no demands being placed upon them.

As Madge peered into the room, she saw the gleam of Daisy’s eyes and realised the child was still awake. Madge moved carefully through the room and sat on the edge of Daisy’s bed. Speaking softly, Madge explained that she needed to return to the Round House.
“The babes will wonder where I’ve got to,” Madge told Daisy with a grin. “I need to go and see to them now that you’re both safe.”
“I’m so sorry Aunty Madge,” stammered Daisy. “I didn’t mean to take you away from the others, I didn’t think about them, I’m so sorry!”
“Hush Daisy!” said Madge, placing her hand gently over Daisy’s. “You needed me today. There is nothing for you to be sorry about. Janie has offered to let you stay here for as long as you like so you needn’t come back to the Round House before you’re ready, and,” Madge continued, seeing the look on Daisy’s face, “and, if you decide you are never ready to return to the Round House, I will make sure you are happy and safe.”
“But can you do that?” asked Daisy.

Madge looked seriously at Daisy. “I will do everything in my power Daisy. When  your mother died, I agreed to look after you, to love you as my own, to care for you in place of your mother. I wouldn’t be fulfilling that charge if I failed you in this. Loving you and Primula is no mere duty – don’t ever think that. When I took you into my family, it meant exactly that – you are part of my family.”

Madge knew that Daisy was old enough to know that Madge was not using the term ‘family’ to encompass all members of the Russell clan, but Madge could offer no further assurances at this point. All she could do was tuck Daisy in more firmly and leave her with a loving kiss.

Jem’s frustration had continued for several hours before eventually the headlights of Madge’s car could be seen turning into the driveway and approaching the house.
“At last!” he shouted angrily, making for the door, which he flung open at the same time that Madge flung open the car door.
“I will speak to you indoors,” hissed Madge as she pushed past him and made her way into the house. She turned down the passage way and entered the cloakroom, where she busied herself for several minutes; removing Janie’s coat, washing her hands and face, tidying her hair. At last, she left the room to be confronted by Jem stood in the passage at the door to hi study.
     “In here,” he said shortly.
“I think not,” replied Madge calmly. “We will have this discussion in the sitting room, but only after I have made myself a cup of tea.” Madge turned away from her husband and walked sedately towards the kitchen. Seeing no other option, Jem silently followed.

Madge filled the kettle, began warming the pot, fetched a cup and saucer and laid biscuits onto a plate, which she then placed on a small tray. Her hands were trembling ever so slightly, so she kept herself busy to hide this fact from Jem. The trembling was partly caused by fear but mainly due to anger. Madge could not remember the last time – or if ever – she had been this angry. At last the kettle boiled, so Madge poured tea into the pot, placed a cosy over it, placed the pot on the tray and carried the lot through to the sitting room. She put the tray on a tiny table always used for this purpose in the evenings, and sat herself in her usual chair. Jem stood, glowering.
“Well?” he demanded. “Where have you been all day?”
“How about we do this my way Jem? Why don’t you start by telling me where you were this morning? Or no, since you and I both know where you were, why don’t you tell me why you took such apparent delight in ruining two little girls lives, or even better, why don’t you tell me exactly what my sister’s involvement in this saga is?

Jem had been poised ready to explode in a torrent of words, but at Madge’s final question, his mouth sagged. He had known that Madge had been with the Venable’s girls, and he had guessed that Joey would take great delight in retelling his actions of the morning. He had not expected Joey to give herself away so easily, and he was unsure now just how far she had implicated herself.
“Nothing to say Jem?” asked Madge sweetly between sips of tea. “Interesting, You seemed so keen to talk before. Maybe you need time to get your story straight with my sister?” she added.

Jem picked up the tea pot and threw it through the window. Without a word, he went up the stairs, collected his suitcases and walked back down the stairs. Madge sat drinking tea.
“I will be back in the morning when I hope you will be in a far more reasonable frame of mind,” said Jem. He didn’t quite trust himself to say anymore at this stage. He turned on his heel and walked out of the front door, slamming it behind him. Madge attempted to keep drinking tea, but her lips would quiver, and she couldn’t hold the cup quite steady. With a clatter of porcelain, she put the cup back on it’s saucer, put her face into her hands and wept.

Of course, that was back when I thought this was FCS, but I thought he might as well make use of his foresightedness  ;)

Hoping for more - but not expecting any just yet after such lengthy posts earlier.

Very good and thank you.  After I read that I went back to the School at the Chalet - 1st page, 1st chapter.  the chapter is titled "Madge decides" and it is Madge who takes charge and has thought through all the decisions when Dick is waffling about 'being worried' with no viable suggestions to make.

I was always disappointed that EBD turned her into an adjunct of Jem.  This story is Madge rejuvenated and I love it.

More, when you can, please.

darn! I was hoping nobody would ask me this!

this doesn't fit anywhere in CS canon. I'm picturing them in the Armishire period, but Daisy is (in my mind at least) about 14/15, which would make Primula 7/8. Unfortunately when I started, I was going to have Primula aged about 14, but I wanted Daisy to still be a schoolgirl too, so that's where everything falls down!

Therefore, you have to suspend logic and reason and just go with the flow   :D

Same here - I could happily stay up all night every night and sleep through the day! I'm convinced I'm either nocturnal or operating on Australia time! Sadly however, I have to get up every day to take the bratlets to school. Oh how I long for the days when I don't have to drive them - but given my daughters problems (she has a type of Autistic bahaviour) I fully expect to still be driving her everywhere when she is 37!

The window was very definitely closed and the tea pot sailed through with an almighty crash and landed in a flower bed filled with petunias.

The glass landed in the bed too, whereupon a little worm, out wriggling later that night, met it's untimely end when it wriggled over a shard of glass and neatly spliced itself in two.

More proper story tomorrow - probably afternoon as I have an appointment with daughters therapist in the morning!

And now I am off to bed - don't think I quite made my midnight deadline, but it's pretty darn close! Nighty byes!

This is terrific, Rachel. I love the way you've shown Jem up as a horrible, biased coward who storms off as soon as he is challenged to account for his behaviour. Anyone else notice the way he tried to blame it all on Madge's mental instability? A sure sign of guilt.

BTW, why did he tell Jo, instead of talking it over with Madge first?

ETA, I now really like Janie Lucy, she's been so calm and accepting of the girls, and so kind to them.

Added to which my daughter presented her mouth to me for inspection late last night to show me a wonderful glowing abcess, resulting in an emergency appointment to the dentist today (in passing, isn't it interesting that Matey never had a problem getting an appointment for Joey next day?) and then driving around looking for a flipping late night chemist to get the antibiotics!

Title: Re: Primula "Venables"? ~ part two
Post by Rachel on Jan 12th, 2004, 9:32pm
The following morning, Madge heard the car drawing up outside the front door. She sat quietly in the dining room, ostensibly finishing her late breakfast. She had hardly slept the night before, alternately sobbing in despair and raging with anger. Now however, she was cool, calm and collected; very much the woman in control.

Jem entered the house cautiously. He bitterly regretted his outburst of the night before, and knew that his behaviour had gone beyond acceptable. Now his first priority was to find Madge and apologize. He hesitated in the doorway of the dining room, watching as Madge ate her toast in a dignified manner. He walked towards her, deeply upset by how withdrawn she appeared to be, knowing he was the cause of this change in her attitude towards himself. Reaching Madge’s chair, he stopped and cleared his throat.
“Yes?” said Madge, not looking at him and making a show of reading the morning paper. “Did you want the tea pot to smash?”

Jem dropped to his knees beside her chair, and took her hand. “Madge, I’m so sorry, I’ve been an utter fool, can you ever forgive me?” Jem held Madge’s hand to his face, desperate for the woman he loved to forgive him, but knowing he didn’t deserve forgiveness.

Madge put the paper down slowly and looked at Jem properly. He looked tired, he looked as if he had hardly slept, he looked as if he had spent the whole night tossing and turning and trying to work out where his life had taken a turn he had never even noticed. In short, he looked exactly the way Madge felt inside.
“I can’t forgive you yet Jem, although I want to. But how can I forgive you a hurt that wasn’t done to me? It isn’t for me to give you forgiveness at all – it’s Primula, and to a lesser extent Daisy. It is their forgiveness you need to seek. It is to your niece’s you should be offering apologies. It is Primula and Daisy’s lives that you have shattered beyond repair. Whether we have a life together is something I cannot say yet; what I can tell you, Jem, is the same as I told Daisy yesterday. For as long as I am alive, I will be Daisy and Primula’s family. I will care for those girls for as long as they wish me to. As their uncle, it is your job to offer unquestioning love, and acceptance of them, and also acceptance for what their mother did. Are the children responsible for the sins of their parents? Do you hold Primula responsible for her mother’s mistakes? Do you really wish those girls to grow up hating you? At this moment, Daisy hates you with a passion. Passion wears out. What feeling will she be left with Jem? Will that hatred turn into disdain? Apathy? Or can you bring her back to loving you? That is your choice with Daisy. Primula is destroyed Jem. You have shattered her life. What will you offer Primula? Will you offer her the love that her mother entrusted you to provide? Or are you going to make her feel unwelcome? A burden? A bastard? Is it her fault? You know it isn’t! What are you going to do Jem? Tell me that before you start seeking forgiveness.”

Jem looked at Madge, despair in his eyes. “But why did she do it at all Madge? Why did she have to do that?”

Madge knew that Jem was talking of his sister, Margot now, and knew also that Jem was almost as shattered by events as Primula had been the day before.
“Why don’t you tell me the whole story from the very beginning Jem? And maybe you can also tell me then exactly what part Joey has to play in this tale? If I can help you Jem I will, just as I would help any friend of mine in this situation.”
“Is that all I am Madge – a friend?” asked Jem, his eyes bright with emotion.
“At present I’m not even sure if you can be a friend to me Jem, but I am willing to listen if you wish to talk. It is your choice.”

Jem took a deep breath then stood up from his position at Madge’s knee. “I think I would like to tell you now,” he said, sitting down opposite his wife.

Thank you Rachel. I like that Madge was not immediately forgiving, and I also like how you handled Jem's return.
If he can possibly explain his actions, I might be inclined to be a little softer on him - after all, he adored his sister and she managed to hurt him a lot in her life. Obviously doesn't excuse what he's done to the poor girls.
And I agree with whoever commented on Janie, being a strong, kind figure for Madge. Am looking forward to reading my Janie of La Rochelle now to get to know her better.

ETA Oh and I'd love some more whenever you can post!  ;)
