Title: Primula "Venables"?
Post by Rachel on Jan 2nd, 2004, 12:09pm
Primula sat on the chair, shaking with emotion. What she had just heard was completely impossible. It couldn't be true. Yet why would they lie to her? She felt so confused, and wanted so much to talk all this through with Daisy, but Daisy upon hearing the news had immediately believed it and gone dashing off to be by herself.

As Primula sat alone in the drawing room, Joey asked Jem in a soft voice, "Do you think we were right to tell her? She looks totally shattered."
"She had to know sometime Joey, and the longer we left it, the worse shock it would be. She'll get used to the idea in time, and I think eventually she will even grow satisfied and content."
Joey was unsure of this, but accepted that Jem was far more likely to know what was best for Primula than she would, so said nothing more on tis.

Jem had his own worries. He now had to face the fact that Madge didn't know, and that young Primula would very likely blurt everything out to her adored aunt the very first time they met, without allowing Jem a chance to tell Madge everything first.

Fortunately for Jem, Primula's reaction to the news resulted in her completely breaking down and being fit for nothing other than bed. When she was lying in bed in the pretty bedroom in Joey's house, Jem raced back to the Round House to speak with Madge, determined that he should have his say first.

However, Joey had apparently forestalled him, telephoning her sister the minute Jem left the house. Madge had left a note for Jem on the table, informing him that she had gone to visit Joey and would be back later on, possibly before supper but more likely afterwards as Joey had offered to feed her.

Jem sat in a chair and groaned aloud. He should have known Joey would have to get in ahead of him, but he thought after all this time she would have let him speak to Madge first. Resolving to be prepared for any circumstances, Jem went slowly upstairs and began to pack two small suitcases.

Esmeralda - you'll find the bulk of the explanation in a thread on "CS Questions" titled "Joey Maynard Prize?" (or similar!)

I'm just accepting the challenge - as always!

I have only one word to say in response to that thought Angel :-

Eeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Title: Re: Primula "Venables"?
Post by Catherine_B on Jan 2nd, 2004, 3:59pm
Well, it was the obvious thought, given a) the 'Primula "Venables"' subject line, and b) the fact that everyone says Primula looks like Jem's own daughter!

*in agreement with Angel on this one*

Rachel, given what else you've fed us, you've only yourself to blame for the squickfest.

I still say she's a lovechild of Jem and Margot. May even write that.

Then again, I have some decency, ML/Jack is distrbing enough

A tiddly bit that's floating round in my head because otherwise I wont get to sleep for hours!

*************************************************************

Madge settled herself comfortably on the sofa in Joey's pretty drawing room. "So do tell Joey! You sounded most mysterious on the telephone - what on earth have you been up to?"
Joey smiled like a contented cat and wriggled herself even more comfortably into her chair. She was almost purring in satisfaction - she always loved to be first with the news.
"You may be wondering where young Primula is," Joey began.
"Not really," replied Madge, "I heard Jem say he would drop her in here this morning, so I presume she's out playing with your crowd?"
"Ah, you might well think that, but she is in fact upstairs sound asleep." Joey was almost at bursting point now.
Madge looked startled. "Is she unwell? Joey, how could you act like this when that poor child needs me!" madge went to leave the room but was halted at Joey's words.
"No, she's not ill! Just cried herself into a state, but she's calmed down now and she'll be fine when she wakes up."

Madge looked deep into Joey's eyes, looking for the truth. What she saw there made her sit down slowly, maintaining eye contact the whole time. Joey by now was hugging herself with glee, literally and figuratively speaking.
"What happened to upset her so?" Madge asked at last, unable to bear her sister's silence.
"She found out!" giggled Joey, shrieking aloud as a look of confusion rapidly crossed Madge's face.

Well, I thought the parents were Jem and Joey, read this adn thought it was Jem and Margot Maynard (ie girl probably just about young enough to be his granddaughter *shudders*)), then realised it meant Margot Venables (*shudders again*) and finally worked out I was right in the first place. Well, I got there eventually anyway.

Madge looked into her little sister's eyes and asked her "What did Primula find out? Why is she so upset Joey? Please, tell me!"
Joey choked back her giggles and attempted to straighten her face. "Oh Madge - did you really not know? I was sure Jem was pulling my leg when he said he had to get home to tell you!"
"Joey, I shall shake you if you don't hurry up and tell me what is going on!" cried Madge, fed up of Joey's cryptic remarks and determined to be told the truth.

Joey looked down at her hands in her lap, and took several long deep breaths, attempting to get back in total control of herself. Eventually she looked up, her dark eyes still sparkling with mischief, but no longer giggling like an idiot.
"Madge, Jem knew something about Primula, which Prim herself didn't know, and he finally told her today."
"Told her what?" Madge was growing increasingly angry at Joey's dealying tactics.

"Well, it concerns me too you see Madge, and I didn't want you to get all upset because I knew if Jem told you he would get it all upside down and sideways. Anyway," she continued hastily seeing real anger flashing in Madge's eyres, "anyway, it turns out Wassisname Venables wasn't Primula's father!"
Joey sat back to watch with interest what effect her latest bombshell would have.

So far our little crowd has magic eye ones (the picture on the back is actually the card itself), plastic ones (good plan, drying cards in a microwave does work but they get awfully hot and the pack is now twice as thick cos they're a bit crinkled...) and someone at school has round ones!

Madge stood up and walked over to her sister. When she was stood over the chair where Joey was lying back giggling softly, she bent over and slapped Joey. Joey instantly stopped her giggles, looking at Madge with a stunned expression. Not even as a naughty little girl had her sister ever treated her n this way. She had never once been slapped, despite many occasions where it would have been completely justified. Unsure how to respond to her sister at this point, Joey burst into tears.

Madge stood up straight, an ugly look swiftly passing over her face. “You disgust me Joey. Pull yourself together and fetch my niece please.”
Joey, still choking, gulped a few times as she said “She isn’t even your niece! She’s Jem’s – and he might not even want to keep acknowledging her now we know she’s illegitimate!”
This second time when Madge slapped Joey, Joey’s head span round with the force behind the blow.
“Whatever she is or isn’t Joey, she is a little girl who needs to know she is still loved and wanted. Either you go and fetch her down or I shall go myself.”

Joey looked at her sister and decided it would be wiser not to risk her wrath once more and went silently from the room, up the stairs and arrived back downstairs in four minutes, half dragging the most miserable lump of childhood ever seen.
Primula saw her Aunty Madge stood there and hung her head in shame. She was young enough to feel that this disgrace was hers to bear, and was mentally preparing herself for rejection on every front. Madge caught the look in the small girl’s eyes and flung herself to her knees before the child.
“No darling! Never like that precious! Oh Primula darling, I love you and so does Daisy and Uncle Jem-“
Madge ground to a halt, wondering for the first time exactly what Jem knew and why he hadn’t bothered sharing this news with her when he seemed to have shared it with his sister-in-law.
Clutching Primula to her tightly, Madge made her way to the door and assisted Primula out to the car, settling the little girl tenderly, tucking a rug around the frail shoulders, before softly closing the car door. Without so much as a glance in Joey’s direction, Madge climbed into the car, let in the clutch and drove off in a shower of flying pebbles.

Left to herself, Joey went off into fits of giggles again before hurrying to the telephone.
“That you Jem? Madge is on her way home and oh! Is she in a bad mood now! I think you’re in for it now!” and with a laugh, Joey hung up without waiting to hear Jem’s response.
Jem looked at the receiver in his hand, his face showing extreme displeasure. The kind of displeasure more usually associated with stepping something very unpleasant, very unexpected and with bare feet. He hung up, his nose screwing up as he thought of Madge in a “bad mood”. He had experienced these moods more often than he would have liked and knew his only weapon was to get in with the first blow and refuse to let his wife speak. He smiled grimly, determined to get this over and done with as soon as possible.

An hour later, he was still awaiting Madge and Primula’s return. He stood by the window, absent-mindedly looking out over the gardens, wondering just how long exactly it would take Madge to drive home from Joey’s house. With a glint in his eye, and a joyful expression, quashed as quickly as it arrived, Jem had visions of fatal car accidents and serious injuries. He sighed a huge sigh. If only life would be that tidy and solve all his problems for him so easily.

Two hours later Jem was angry. How dared Madge be so late! He had a good mind to start supper without waiting for her if she was much later – or at least, he would have if he had remembered to let Marie know what time supper was required. As he hadn’t let the maid know, and as she and Madge had a long standing arrangement on this subject, Marie had looked at the clock strike six and with a satisfied smile packed up in the kitchen and gone out for the evening. Jem, thinking vaguely that coffee would be good whilst he was waiting yelled for Marie and waited for her brisk footsteps along the passageway. His fury when nobody came in answer to his summons was immense. He yelled again, rousing nothing but dust and finally stamped his way to the kitchens.

The only people in the kitchen were Rosa, the nursery maid and a young man whom Jem knew only by sight as the postman. After venting his anger on the pair, and demanding Rosa’s return to the nursery immediately, he stamped his way back to the window of the sitting room to await his errant wife.

King Canute was a very powerful king and his courtiers or whatever you'd callem thought he had supernatural powers and could do anything so to prove he was just a normal human being he went to the beach when the tide was coming in and told the waves to go back, and obviously they didn't.

*huggles Rachel*

Orlando still seems to be here but he hasn't poted yet. maybe he's PM'ing you?  ;)

Title: Re: Primula "Venables"?
Post by Rachel on Jan 6th, 2004, 11:50pm
I *do* like nice big shiny knives!

And King Canute and the Waves:

The kings followers thought he was the bees knees and were doing major sucjking up "Oh you're so wonderful, you're so powerful, why, I bet you could even control the elements if youwanted!"

Kingy said "No way Jose! Only god has that kind of power."

Followers: "But you're just as good as god!"

So kingy went down the beach, told his fickle followers to det up a chair in the line of the tide, and he sat there. He said "Waves, go back!"

Surprise surprise, the tide kept coming in. King got wet feet, followers looked and felt very foolish and stopped being such arse lickers.

No, Joey hasn't told Madge who Primula's father is.

Jem is not a wife beater - my choice of words was misrepresented as I meant he would get in with the first blow metaphorically. Please don't keep referring to him in this way or I wont be able to finish the story!

If the person currently using the name as a log in is the real Mr Bloom, he is more than welcome to come to my house for a cup of tea and to see how nice I am in reality.

However, as he is already at the stage of calling me "darling", I don't anticipate there being any problems there!

Post by Rachel on Jan 7th, 2004, 11:59pm
Jem’s frustration continued for several hours before eventually headlights could be seen turning into the driveway and approaching the house.
“At last!” he shouted angrily, making for the door.

It is now necessary to go back several hours to when Madge had left Joey’s house. At first Madge had been so angry she could hardly think, but Primula’s tremulous voice had broken into her thoughts.
“Aunty Madge, where’s Daisy?” she asked.
Madge gave a start; mentally berating herself for never having given the girl a thought from the time she heard Joey’s giggles until now, she was instantly concerned.
“Where did she go pet? Do you know where she is?” asked Madge, attempting to keep a note of rising panic from her voice.
Primula shook her head. “No Aunty Madge, she ran off when Uncle Jem said- when he-“ Primula faltered to a stop, too unhappy to continue with what her Uncle Jem had told her.

Madge stopped the car at the side of the road and turned to face Primula.
“Think carefully sweetheart. I know you have had a shock and are very upset, but we need to get Daisy to come home with us too. If she is feeling upset too, where do you think she will have gone?”
Primula looked into her aunt’s face, seeing the seriousness with which the question was being asked. Screwing up her face in the intensity of thought, Primula tried to think where Daisy might be. A joyous expression came over the young face as she remembered “Daisy’s Hidey Hole” in the woods behind the Round House. Quickly she explained to her aunt.
“We found it together – it’s a little space under a huge tree trunk in the woods. When the tree came down, it left a gap underneath that we can get through, although it does make us rather muddy,” Primula hesitated, wondering if there would be chastisement for knowingly messing up their clothes, but Madge urged her on with her tale, frustrated by wanting to demand instant explanations, but sensing that Primula needed to tell her stories in her own way and at her own pace.
“Carry on darling, where is the tree exactly?” asked Madge.
“As I said, it’s in the woods behind the house, rather nearer the road than the house, but not too close. Not close enough for anyone to see us,” added the little girl thoughtfully.

Madge started the car again and began driving towards the Round House with a request for Primula to stop her when they were as near the fallen tree as they could get by road.
“Turn down here!” called Primula suddenly, breaking the silence of the journey. Madge looked carefully where Primula was pointing and saw a track. It led, as she knew, all the way around her own property, but was seldom used by any traffic being of the worst dirt roads, rutted and pot-holed along the full length. Cautiously, Madge began to ease the car along the track, wincing every time the car bounced in or out of a hole with a jarring shake. Eventually Primula told her to stop the car.

“It’s just in there,” said Primula looking into the darkest part of the woods.
“Nice cheerful spot you girls choose to play in!” remarked Madge with a grin, inwardly relieved to see Primula’s small face taking on a little animation.

The two began working their way in through the woods, and eventually came to the fallen tree. Madge peeped into the space under the tree, but couldn’t see Daisy, although she could see something.
“What is it Aunty Madge?  Is she here?” asked Primula anxiously, attempting to look past Madge.
“I’m- I’m not quite sure sweetie,” replied Madge in a voice laden with false calm. “I don’t think she is. I think we should get you home now anyway-“ Madge’s brisk tones were fooling nobody, not even herself, and with a sharp intake of breath, Primula flung herself down on the earth and wriggled under the tree.
