Title: Jo and the plot bunny!
Post by Vikki on Aug 21st, 2003, 11:50pm
Okay, those wretched plot bunnies are getting EVERYWHERE!!!
There I was at work, minding my own business, when this plot bunny appeared, and boy, is he a persistant little so and so!? Do you know how difficult it is to serve drinks when you have a purple, lop-eared plot bunny jumping up and down all round you? He kept dipping his ears in people's pints, and I had to chase him out of the kitchen five times!!(He was after the lettuce, and the chef threatened to put him in a stew!) ;D
Anyway, this is what he wanted me to write.....

Jo Bettany was sitting in her bedroom gazing thoughtfully out of the window. She had come down to the Tiernsee to welcome the girls of the Chalet School back for the new term (the first since she herself had left school), and had been stranded there when her nieces and nephews came down with measles. Jo was stumped, she wanted to try writing a book, a school story for girls, but her first effort had been a disaster. Matey was the only one to have read it, and her verdict had been scathing in the extreme! Jo was determined to start again, but inspiration was eluding her.
All of a sudden, there was a terrific thumping at her bedroom door. "Come in" called Jo. But there was no response apart from a renewal of the banging, Jo assumed it was some of the middles messing about, and called out to them to behave themselves and leave her alone, asking if they weren't supposed to be in prep, no response, except for more thudding at the door. Exasperated, Jo rose from her chair, stormed across the room and flung open the door.....

.......Only to be nearly bowled off her feet by what appeared to be a large rabbit!! It was about two feet high with floppy ears and, most startling of all, it had fur which was a vivid pink in hue!!! ;D ;D
"Who, Imean what, I mean who, ARE you?" stuttered Jo
"I'm your Plot Bunny!" said the rabbit "I've brought you an inspiration for your book!" and he proceeded to dictate to the bemused Jo the story line of a book called "Cecily Holds the Fort".................

Don't be so ridiculous snapped Jo, "I'm not writing a book dictated to me by a rabbit!"
The plot bunny turned a bulging eye on her and bearing its teeth menacingly at her it said "we prefer the term bunny, OK!"
Just at that point Matey stuck her head round Jo's open door, "Who are you talking to?" she asked.
"This stupid plot bunny" Jo told her. Matey gave the girl a curious look and came over and felt her forehead.
"Yes dear, I really think you have been overdoing it!"
THe plot bunny bounced up on to Jo's bed, turned a somersault and stuck its tongue out at Jo, an evil grin on its face.

Jo was disturbed once again by the re-entry of Matey into her bedroom.

'Now Joey, I'll just help you to get undressed, and you can get into bed with this hot water battle. I've brought a dose of my own special soothing mixture for you, and we'll see if that helps. If it doesn't, I'll have to ring the San for them to send a doctor down.

Have a good sleep, and then we'll see whether you are feeling more yourself this afternoon. If you are, you can get up for Kaffee und Kuchen. Miss annersley has had to go down to Innsbruck today, and she promised to bring back something special in the way of cream cakes, and you won't want to miss them, will you?'

It was at this point that the plot bunny climbed onto her head and started jumping up and down chanting the first line of Cecily Holds the Fort over and over again. Jo clutched at her head and groaned. This plot bunny was annoyingly persistent, and despite her determination not to give into it, she could feel the desire to write the story begin to burn inside her.

Jo did her best to get rid of the plot bunny.
She opened the window, and waited until his curiosity got the better of him, and he hopped up onto the windowsill to see what was outside.(Plot bunnies can be VERY nosy) Jo crept up behind the unsuspecting bunny and pushed him out of the window, slamming it shut and pulling the curtains.
However, fifteen minutes later there was an angry thump at her door, and it flew open to admit the plot bunny. His pink fur had turned blue with the cold, and he had snow in his ears. This was not a happy plot bunny!!
Being an animal lover, Jo heaved an exasperated sigh, made him a nest of blankets before the fire, and trotted off to the kitchen to get him a mug of cocoa.......

When she returned with the cocoa, she found that the wretched plot bunny had managed to open up her precious portable typewriter, and was laboriously (my goodness, such words on a Friday afternoon) pecking out a story called Jo and the Plot Bunnies in Space.

She was so angry at this sight that she screamed in rage, bringing Matey, Miss Annersley and a large group of curious middles to her door.

"Whatever is the matter Joey dear?" Miss Annersley asked anxiously.
"It's this wretched plot bunny. He is plaguing me with ideas for stories. Everywhere I look he's there!" Jo sounded as if she was at the end of her tether.
Miss Annersley raised her eyebrows at Matey who nodded and advanced on Jo with a cup of liquid in her hand.
"Now come along Jo. You are running a bit of a fever. Drink this and go to bed. The nasty bunny will be gone by the morning"
The plot bunny grinned evily when he heard this and climbed into Jo's bed.

The following morning Joey awoke to find there was no sign of any plot bunny. "How stupid of me!" she giggled, "I must have really been over doing it!"
She decided to give herself some time off and visit Frieda in Innsbruck, and, as she had just learnt to drive, went to ask Mademoiselle if she could borrow the school car.
Mademoiselle was pleased to see that Joey was so much better and gladly allowed her use of the car. it was not a good decision!

(I speak from experience - a story I'm currently writing has a tendency to come nibble on my ear when I'm coasting at 70 + on the motorway!)

Tut! Tut! 70+?  Naughty, naughty!  Perhaps the plot bunny would leave you alone if you kept to the speed limit!
:o :o :o ;D ;D ;D

Alright the truth then! 90+! (I've got a VW Golf and it likes speed!)

There is something about driving that plot bunnies just love, that and work. I got so annoyed today because I had things I had to do for my boss and the plot bunnies were having a field day.It was just so inconsiderate of my boss to give me work to do! ::)

I aspire to be able to THINK about 90+ speeds. My Fiesta struggles to do 60 without gravitational assistance (ie going down hill) - but given the number of plot bunnies I habitually travel with, that's probably just as well

Well Ray, at least if your car conks out on you, you can always make the plot bunnies get out and push! ;)

How big are these plot bunnies??? This thread is really funny. What is the speed limit in Austria, I seem to remember Jack Maynard breaking it several times in Switzerland and in Austria during 'Camp' How many plot bunnies would it take to push a Fiesta, now there's a puzzle!!

Title: Re: Jo and the plot bunny!

The plot bunnies vary in size Emma, I think it is connected to the size of the plot they carry! ;)

Thanks for explaining Vikki, so is this plot bunny small medium or large??

Title: Re: Jo and the plot bunny!
Post by Ray on Aug 23rd, 2003, 11:02am
It's inversely proportional. I've got a positively mini-thing sitting beside me right now that's carrying the plot for my current three-story arc which is comfortably the most complicated and detailed plot I've dealt with. (20 major characters, another 20 or so supporting cast; one major plot line, at *least* three major sub-lines, several minor sub-lines all spread over three stories of roughly 30,000 words each...)

I wouldn't want to be one of your plot bunnies Ray, it sounds like you work them hard (or they work you hard!!). I've got a stressful day ahead, trying to combine the CBB, cricket and athletics...

*grins* I think it's work me hard more than anything - I was up until 5am this morning with one and they're going to take advantage of the fact that I have a week off...

Mind, I should come out of it with a few projects cleared, which is always good.

"Silverlining" is that something which gets rid of plot bunnies? If so, where can I get some?

The only way I know to get rid of plot bunnies is to write the story they want you to. Once it's done, they go phut in a puff of dust and bunny fur.

My dog chases plot bunnies!-Honest!
Me and Muym were talking about them and the dog was there, so we teased her telling her to chase the plot bunnies. She did! She was looking for them everywhere then dashed out of the house as fast as possible, barking the whole time!!!
