Title: Phil leaves the chalet school
Post by edith on Sep 7th, 2003, 1:37pm
OK this is Phil leaving the cs for the reasons in my other drabble-estranged Maynard.

Phil Maynard carefully wrote the adress on the envelope. Mr E Buchan c/o Smiths Publishers...

Ned would know what to do. Phil had met the sci-fi author after he had come to the oberland with his dying mother. Much to Joey's disgust the two had become very close and Phil had begun writig sci-fi herself.

Phil attached the stamp to the front of the envelope. She wanted to write sci Fi not soppy kids stories or historical novels. She could write comedy and fantasy, set something in a galaxy far, far away... Mamma hadn't liked that, she thought it wasn't respectable-even though this was the 70s. And Mamma and Papa hadn't liked Ned, and Phil couldn't see why. Ned was the most fascinating person in the world, he knew what he was talking about, a world of probability, quantum physics, big bangs and space... he had a degree in physics as well as two published novels.

Phil couldn't face the conservetism she faced at home and at school, she was 17, nearly 18, working for her A levels, she knew what she wanted to do-WORK! work in this amazing world of unpredictability, she would do maths or physics and work in an observatory if only she could get the grades, but her parents had refused to let her study science. She needed an escape. Carefully she tucked the letter into a bag and climbed out of the window into the night. She had to post this letter without her parents knowing... her whole future hinged on Ned being able to take her work to his publisher-He said it was good, and if she couldn't get her parents support through university-she'd pay for it herself!

OK i know this is a bit garbled but its a start. OH and whens Phils birthday and whats her approx. date of birth?

This looks good! Phil and Geoff born in Juneish and are 14 and half years younger than triplets. As Trips born 1939 that makes Phil's birthday 1954! At least I think so!

Phil waited a few weeks until a reply came, Ned liked the novel and couldn't wait to see it in print-he'd given it to his publishers and wanted to know if Phil wanted to use her real name on it?
Phil wrote back quickly. Did she have to decide yet? She needed to talk to her parents-be prepared for storms over fruedishiem she wrote, especially when Papa realised Phil had done what he had forbidden her to do-write to Ned.
Nervously Phil crept downstairs to where her mother and father were talking.
"Mama?" Phil asked.
"What is it baba?" Joey asked.
"Would you read this?"
"If you want said Joey puzzled.
Phil sat there nervously as Joey read. There was a frown on her mother's face.
"I thought I said I didn't like this nonsense, and that you were to stop reading and writing this rubbish?"
"Its not rubbish!" Phil retorted, "The publishers and Ned like it..."
"You're still in contact with Edward Buchan?" Jack said coldly. "I thought we told you to stop contacting that man?"
"Well I like Ned, he talks about stuff I like and understand!"
"Science? Fiction rubbish!"
"Alot of the stuff he talks about's the latest thing! You'd know if you'd look beyond your precious San!"
"Stop talking to me like that young lady!" Jack said sternly. "Go to your room!"
"NO!" Phil looked fierce. "I'm nearly 18, I want to make up my own life for once!"
"While you're underneath my roof you do as I say!"
"Fine!" Phil said, "I'll leave tonight! I'll go to England."
Joey gasped as Phil swept out of the room.

Lots and lots more, please, Edith.

This puts Jack in another new light, and not a very nice one, coming the heavy father with Phil.

"Jack!" Joey cried. "Stop her!"
"If she'll appologise and promise to behave and never speak to Edward Buchan again!"
Phil came running downstairs, clothes and books spilling out of a large holdall.
"Phillippa, I will ask you once more, to stay here if you'll appologise and never speak to Ned Buchan again!"
"No! Edward's my friend!"
"Well go then, I disown you. No daughter of mine behaves like that!"
"Fine!" Phil said and stormed out of the room.
Joey gasped and dashed out after her.
"Phil baby, don't go!"
"I have to!"
"Why, your father doesn't mean anything!"
"He does! I NEED to write my book, I need science!"
"Phil! My baby!"
"Sorry Mamma, I have to."
With that Phil opened the door of fruedisheim, no longer her happy home.

A Post card
Ned,
You've got to help me, I'm on my way to England,
I've left home BIG ROW!
Never going back,
Can you find me somewhere to stay or something. I'm staying at a youth hostel in france-here's the phone no. 0237487
Phil

Ned Buchan frowned as he read the postcard, he was fond of Phil but the girl had messed up this time. He picked up the phone and dialled the nbumber.

"Je voudrais Phillippa Maynard s'ilvous plait!" HGe shouted down the phone to the receptionist.
"Non Phillippa, P h i l l i p p a. Oui Phillippa, merci beaucoup!"

"Ned, is that you?" Phil sounded as if she had been crying. "I thought you'd abandoned me too!"
"I only just got your postcard, I was away for the weekend and Mr Smith didn't give it to me till the end of our meeting. What happened Phil?"
"Dad! He wouldn't let me write! I argued with him, he was awful!"
"Hush Phil, look you can stay with me until you've got a place of your own, have you enough money to get to England?"
"Just about, but that takes nearly all my money, I'm down to spare centimes!"
"Look, I'll meet you in Portsmouth if you get the next ferry you can from Caen."
"Ok! And Ned..."
"What Phil?"
"Thanks alot, I'm glad I've 1 friend!"

The next day Ned stood at customs waiting for Phil.He was a bit unsure of his rash promise the previous day, though Phil was a friend, he wasn't sure that his house in rural wales was the best base for someone looking for a new life. All his doubts went when he saw Phil run out to meet him. She was very different from the neat girl that he had known in Switzerland, her long hair was no longer in its neat plait but in a rough ponytail and her once neat blouse and skirt replaced by an old shirt and jeans, both obviously slept in.
"Ned? Is that you?" She asked.
"Of course Phil, got all your stuff?"
"Yeah."
"Then hurry up, we need to get to my place by this evening, and its a long drive to Wales.

Ned pulled up outside a red brick bungalow and jumped out of the car. "Welcome to Ty Coch, formerly Ty Bach."
"Why formerly Ty Bach?" Phil asked.
"Well Mum thought it would be a good name until we found out why so many of the locals were laughing! Here I'll take your bag."
Ned took Phil into the house and took her bags into a small bedroom. Phil sat on the bed watching the drizzle outside while Ned looked for his mother .
"Hello Phil!" Mrs Buchan said, Ned told me what had happened. You're welcome to stay here as long as you need."
"Thanks Mrs Buchan."
"No, no ,my dear It'll be a pleasure. I remember when I was at the san, you were the nice one, the one who'd talk to such common people as us." Mrs Buchan snorted. "Anyway, what about a nice cup of tea."

I'm also wondering too...

Edith, this is great! Keep going

I can kind of understand Jack's behaviour - at the time, those scientific ideas about the big bang were challenging the church. Eventually, the Catholic church accepted the ideas, but not right away.

Title: Re: Phil leaves the chalet school
Post by Jennie on Sep 18th, 2003, 12:16pm
Yes, but don't forget how they persecuted Galileo.

By this time, science fiction was a perfectly acceptable literary genre. H G Wells and Jules Verne had written widely acclaimed SF, and it was read at the CS , because I remember Ruey Richardson reading a Jules Verne during the rest period after lunch, in an attempt to understand her father. So I have to say that I find Jack's & Jo's attitude unreasonable, though of course Jo might be jealous of another upcoming literary talent.

Any other ideas?

Heheheh heheh heheh he he hehehhe he heheehehe... *Kat giggling wildly to herself that anyone would call their house Ty Bach!!!!*  Oh well done Edith!!

Ok, a simple Welsh lesson for you folks.  'Ty' in Welsh means house.  'Bach' means little.... so Little House... only Ty Bach usually refers to a (an outside) toilet!!!!!  I remember when I was in primary school (bearing in mind Im only 20 now) we had to ask ''Ga y fynd i'r ty bach, os gwelwch yn dda?''  Which means ''May I go to the toilet please?''  (Excuse spelling please - been 4 years since I wrote in welsh!).

We were'nt allowed to go unless we asked in Welsh... so lots of whispering always sprang up when someone needed the loo to check they had the right words!

But Ned has renamed his house Ty Coch - coch means red, so Red House.   Plas Gwyn is White Hall by the way, and Plas Howell is Howell Hall.

That help?

And again - greatly done Edith!! Though I do pity those of you who had to wait so long for a translation!  Keep up the good work :D

Ty Bach is the welsh for the WC, toilet, bog etc, from the days when toilets were in their own little house in the backyard-check with one of the real welsh speakers to make sure though-I don't think its just a mid wales term

Oops i answered this before i fdinished reading the posts.

In September Phil enrolled in the local 6th form college to do her A levels. It was a different place from the privilaged world of the Chalet School but Phil liked it, it was a lot less formal than back there, and the work was more challenging. She was also looking for a place to stay in the nearby town and an evening job, however she soon found that she wouldn't have enough money. Mrs Buchan suggested that she stayed in their spare room for a while longer.
In fact Mrs Buchan enjoyed Phil's company as Ned was often all over the country about his books and she hated being on her own.
So Phil became part of the Buchan household studying at the college and writing in the evening.

Phil wandered into the living room one evening to find Ned staring at a blank sheet of paper, with an overflowing waste paper basket on the ground next to him.
"Dratted biro," he muttered as he scribbled. "Who's there? Oh its you Phil, have you got a decent biro, mine have all died!"
Phil looked at the chewed stump that Ned had thrown in the bin. "Yeah, in my room. I was using it, but as my story seems to be going nowhere at the mo, you can borrow it."
"You stuck too?" Ned asked. "I'm trying to think up a new idea, but I can't think beyond Victoria Spaceport, Ol' Lunnon Yewkay and a cockney robot."
"Sounds interesting."
"Yeah, but thats all I've got I can't think beyond that."
"same here, it looks as if all I know about is an old fashioned girls school..."
"That's it!" Ned punched the air. "I've got it! We'll do it together, a comedy sci-fi set in some sort of outer space boarding school. We could have two main characters hmm, lessee mine'll be Grocco Roc and he's from a meteorite mining base, and yours..."
"Mine'll be Izi Smizz, daughter of a buisniness man and a real snob who lives on Earth!"
Ned bit the end of the biro and scrawled down the notes. "Right, the school'll be one teaching kids all the latest technology... with a levitating head as the head master..."
"And the matron'll be a telepath who can teleport to any trouble!"
"I always thought there was something weird about your matron." Ned joked. "Well let's go!" The pair each grabbed a piece of paper and a biro and began to write.

By the end of the  evening both had written a chapter and each read them out.
"Grocco Roc stood watching the mini shuttles bring in Students from all over the Extraterrestial economic Committe. He was a third year student in the Pearls of WIsdom Accadamy for young intelligences. The headmaster, Nofawfreetoo was hovvering about in his jar shouting at the different students as they left the shuttles. Every now and then Matron would materialise near a more serious offender and haul them off to the san." Ned read out. "Did you fit in the station Phil?"
"YUP!" Phil read her bit out. "Izi Smizz stood waiting on platform 999 Victoria Spaceport, Old Lunnon. Somewhere in the distance her Shuttle train to the Pearls of Wisdom Accademy was docking. She charged up her hoverboard and with her robotic suitcase following glided over to where a roboporter waited. "Where's the shuttle train to the Pearls of Wisdom accademy?" She demanded.
"Platform 1012 love," Creaked the robot in what the makers had thought a cockney voice sounded like. As she glided along the crowded platform she could hear the porter ranting on saying "Me old cock sparrer,  me poor plates of meat, gotta use the dog and bone." constantly.
She found the shuttle train eventually, you couldn't miss it, surrounded as it was by crowds of pupils all dressed in the flourescent space suits and coveralls that were the school uniform." Phil grinned. "Like it?"
"Yeah, great. I'll get Mum to type it up, she loves doing that."

I love the cockney robot, Edith, and I would like to see more of this story, as well as Phil's story, and Poppy's.....but I suppose you mustn't ignore the wind turbines!
There is some talk about building some in the area where I live, but quite a few people seem to be objecting tothe idea.

Why? Wind turbines are the only possible future way of producing power here, we've not enough sun for solar power and we've only a limited amount of fossil fuels etc. and we're cutting down on nuclear power. They don't look that bad-I should know there's what as far as i can tell the biggest onshore wind farm in the UK-100 turbines not that far from where I live.
I'll post more story later-the dreaded physics again!

Edith, I am really enjoying this so far - can't wait for some more!

Not being a Welsh speaker, I thought the humour about the house being called "Ty Bach" was because it sounds so much like "tie-back" as in curtains!  :-[

(By the way - wind turbines make a lot of noise, hence objections if you live too close  :(  And some people think they spoil the scenery too.... Can't see a better alternative myself though  :) )

I know, but I know I'd rather wind turbines on my doorstep than nuclear power...
Anyway, back to the story.

A while later

"Happy Christmas Phil!" Ned burst into Phil's room as she wasgetting dressed, hurriedly, she pulled the quilt round her.
"Ned!" SHe cried, "I was changing." She saw that Ned was grinning from ear to ear.
"Soz, Phil, Mum said to come and wake you up, it's past eleven you know."
Phil glanced at her alarm clock and swore. "I promised your Mum, I'd help with breakfast and dinner."
"Don't worry, I did breakfast and there're still loads of spuds to peel and sprouts to trim. Mum went to church, but I stayed so you weren't alone when you woke, and..." He leant out of the open door to produce a large mug of steaming coffee. "To bring you breakfast in bed. It'll be ready in about ten minutes." The smell of burning wafted through the room. "Yikes! It's burning!" Ned sped off to sort out the burnt breakfast, while Phil put on a shirt and sipped her coffee.

Ned had breakfast ready on a tray when Phil wandered into the room.
"Phil! I was going to bring it in to you."
"Well I'm up now so you needn't bother." Phil sat down at the table, bung it over here, then I'll help with the spuds."
"Or we could write a bit more of "The Pearls"."
"We could do both, one write while the other peels, then we can swap over when we do the sprouts."

mor in a mo

Title: Re: Phil leaves the chalet school
Post by edith on Sep 22nd, 2003, 1:13pm
Ned offered to peel, while Phil wrote.
"Where are we?" Ned asked.
"In the basic levitation lesson with the head."
"Ok, here goes..."
By the end of the potatoes Phil noticed that they were near the end of the book.
"See Ned, we've only got the school concert and the end of term to go. Izi and Grocco are talking again after Grocco saved her from the Gloop and the real theif has owned up..."
"I know!" Ned said.
"Mum'll've finished typing it by the end of the month, then we proof read it and off it goes. Off to the publishers! The Pearls of Wisdom by Ned Buchan and Phil Maynard..."
"Not Maynard... After what my family said and did, I want nothing to do with them!"
"Hmm, then what do you want to be known as..."
"I I don't know."
Ned rubbed his chin. "Use my sirname, Ned and Phil Buchan, yep, its got a ring to it."
"then It'll look as if we're brothers or something...if you don't mind."
"Brothers... yes that'd look good." Ned sighed.

Christmas dinner was over and Mrs Buchan had sent Phil and Ned into the living room after Ned broke a plate washing up.
"If you two can't be sensible..." she threatened. "Anyway, I'm almost ready, so if you two go through to the living room and sort out the presents I will join you in a minute.
Ned passed Phil two packages, one a heavy rectangle and the other soft and squishy.
Phil shyly handed him his present and they waited for Mrs Buchan to arrive before they opened the parcels.

Phil opened the one from Ned first, inside was a copy of Restoree by Anne Mc Caffrey, Phil looked at the cream cover with the collage face and smiled. "Oh Ned! How did you know how much I wanted that book! Especially after I read Dragon Flight!"
Ned grinned. "I thought you'd like that, oh and I've something else for you." He took something from its hiding place in the christmas tree. Phil unwrapped it carefully.
It was a small box, inside was a silver pendant.
"Oh Ned!" she whispered, "Its georgeous..."
"I know you left most of your things behind, so I thought you'd like something nice."
"Nice! It, its beautiful!"
"I'm glad you think so, feel like going for a walk." Ned changed the subject quickly.
"Fine, let me change into something scruffy and my wellies first though!" Phil hurried off.

You'll have to wait and see Esmerelda.

"Jingle bells, jingle bells..." Phil and Ned were singing at the top of their voices as they walked through the woods near the bungalow.
"Lets go  and see the Jones'" Ned suggested as they walked along the road.
"OK then, but not for long, its freezing out here and your Mum'll be wondering where we are!"
"Fine Phil. Um Phil..."
"What?"
"Just remembered. There's this party on new years eve, want to come?"
"Yeah, OK. Where is it?"
"London. Thought we'd stay there for a few days and visit my publishers at the same time. Go to a few museums, you know, have fun."
"OK, when are we leaving?"
"Two days time. Mum says she'll've written the manuscript by now and we can give it to Mr Smith in person."

Phil grinned. "Lets get to the Jones' before I freeze! I'm sure my blood's frozen!"

If it's any help edith, my mother had(and despairingly still has) a hideous cerise pink floor length evening dress, with a collar right up to the neck, sleeves down to the wrists and a high waist line. Oh, and it also has these dismal swirly type patterns in a darker cerise over the entire dress.

I keep trying to sneak it from her house to burn it, but she refuses to part with it a) because it cost a fortune back in 1972, and b) it proves how slim she used to be and c) because she's a hoarder!

It is truly and awfully hideous - think "vomit" meets "liquid farts" and you may begin to understand it's terribleness.

But apparently it was the height of fashion then!

Rachel ~ wishes she wasn't related to her mother when that dress is mentioned   ;)

Thinking back, I had a bright red full length party dress around then.  It was Empire line with a stand-up collar and silver lacey stuff round the collar and cuffs!!   ;D ;D  I also had a navy trouser suit with a long-line top which could be worn as a dress - don't forget that that was the time of the original minis!  I wore a white blouse with a high collar under that sometimes.  This had long sleeves with deep cuffs.  The cuffs and collar had little frills of the same material.

Thanks it sounds really nice

London New years eve

"Phil! Hurry up or we'll be late!" Ned shouted through the door.
"Coming!" Phil cried and opened the door to her room.
"You look... amazing!" Ned gasped. Phil really did look georgeous in the red dress. "But we're still going to be late!"

Luckily they ,managed to get to the venue with no further trouble. Ned introduced Phil to the other guests, mainly writers and scientists that were there.
"Drink Phil?" Ned asked.
"Yes, sure."
Ned came back with two glasses of wine. "Here." He said.
"Thanks Ned,"
"Your welcome Phil! Hey! Peter!" Ned shouted across the room to a bespectacled man with his shirt half tucked out and a pencil stuck in his suit pocket. On closer inspection she noticed the paint stains on the mans hands.
"Phil, this is Peter Booke, he's done the covers to my last two books, and hopefully my next one."
"Oh hello, Ned and Sam isn't it?"
"Phil Maynard."
"Ah Phil thats it, now lets see you're the young lady with the bright idea aren't you that excellent idea for a novel Ned showed me. You must let me design the cover..."
"Its not finished yet." Phil said embarrassed. She was at another dead end in her story and had rewritten half of it already. Somehow she wondered if it would be at all successful.
Ned interupted tactfully. "Come on Pete, lets not talk about work now, hows Lydia?"

Later
The party was nearly over and POhil knew she was drunk. but it had been fun, Peter, Lydia and Simon were very different from the people Phil had gone to school with, a lot more down to earth and  friendly. Even if Peter insisted on calling her Sam or Pippa half the time.
Ned wandered over. "Coming home Phil?"
Phil nodded. "Yeah, let me grab my coat."
Outside, instead of summoning a taxi, ned suggested that they walked to their hotel. Phil nodded, the fresh air would do her good.
"Phil!" Ned said. "I love you. Will you marry me?"
"Ned? What did you say?"
"I said will you marry me?"
"You must be joking, you're totally drunk."
"No, I've never been clearer in my life, you mean so much to me Phil, please say you'll marry me, don't you love me too?"
Phil flushed. "Yes, I suppose I do, I reckon I've fancied you ever since we first met."
"tHEN WILL YOU PLEASE MARRY ME? I, I don't think I could live without you."
"Er, I don't know...

I'll finish this post tomorrow. Gotta go now.  ;D

A few days later outside a jewellry shop

"Ready Phil?" NEd asked.
"For what?" Phil asked.
"To get the ring!" Ned said triumphantly.
"Oh yes!"
"Well lets come in here and choose one now."
Ned opened the door for Phil and the pair went straight to the rings, they looked for a while before a too familiar voice appeared behind them.

Phil almost dropped the ring she was looking at. Jo Maynard was standing behind them.
"Well, well, its my missing daughter and that egotistical out of place friend of hers."
Phil went scarlet before replying equally coldly. "Ah, I see it is the woman that would let her own daughter leave home halfway across the continent because she was too proud for her daughter to associate with mere science fiction writers." Phil put the ring down. "Come on Ned, we'll get the ring somewhere else. I'm sorry for any disturbance Mr Smith." With that Phil almost pulled Ned out of the shop. Once out of sight of her mother Phil broke down in tears. "Why can't they accept me?" She said. "Why are they always waiting round the corner to humiliate me?"
Ned grabbed hold of her. "Don't worry Phil, I won't let them hurt you. Shall we get the ring at home. I don't think they'd go to our backwater."

I think that Jo is motivated by snobbery here, as Ned and his mother are not as middle class as the Maynards.

A big change for the woman who said she couldn't abide snobs. Perhaps she also resents Phil's talents as a writer, and doesn't want to lose any of the attention she gets from being Josephine M Bettany.

Title: Re: Phil leaves the chalet school
Post by Esmeralda on Sep 26th, 2003, 3:57pm
I dare say snobbery has got something to do with it, but also, she may be concerned about hoe Ned can provide financially for Phil, but whatever reason, she certainly doesn't think he's good enough for one of her daughters.
I thought it might be Joey after reading Edith's other drabble and putting two and two together, although I could just as easily have added the together to make five.
Can't wait to see what happens next.

Humm... a case of snobbery mixed with jealousy? Jealous that her daughter is going to be a successful writer but upset that she's writing what Joey doesn't think is 'proper' stories, i.e. sci-fi?? And the same regarding Ned? And maybe she wants Phil to stay around to be the adoring daughter for a bit?

I can think of lots of reasons Joey won't be happy about this! And Ned's not a doctor either!!  ;D

"You know Jack, I saw her with that awful boy today, in London of all places. They were in a jewellry shop of all places, though i don't know how hecould have afforded anything there, he's only a sci-fi writer... yes i know his first novel was dramatised for the radio, but hes still only a sci fi writer.

"Are we going to send an invitation to your familY?" Ned asked.
"Yeah, perhaps they'll come but I don't think they'll bother. Here, let me write it. I'll add a letter as well." Phil picked up a sheet of writing paper and began to write.
"Ned?"
"Yes Phil, who's going to be bridesmaids. You don't know anyone, do you."
"Not really. Unless Melanie, one of my school friends did it. Oh, and there's Peter and Lydia's daughter, except she's only two."
"They'll have to do. I don't think Mother'd let any of my family go."

Here goes.

3 weeks later
"Post!" Ned shouted as he went to the door to pick it up. "Lets see, four replies to the wedding invitations, a letter for us from the publishers about Pearls I think, and two bills. Oh and this..." Ned sounded worried.
"It's one of the invitations we sent to my family. It hasn't even been opened. They've just returned it."
"You weren't expecting anything else Phil."
"Yes but I had hoped they might just reply..."
"Well now we know for sure you've no family support lets get on with the wedding preperations. I'm having Simon as best man, who's going to give you away if your father won't?"
"I thought I might ask Peter."
"Good idea, he'd like that. He's doing the cover for our book at the mo though. Lets leave telling him till he's finished or he'll go off on a tangent and think he's got to draw a weddng picture on the cover or something!"
"Talking of Peter, Lydia phoned last night, the bridesmaids dresses are nearly ready. Oh I can't wait to see them Ned, are we going to London soon?"
"Yeah, I've got to go to the BBC and Mum wants to go to see her family and friends so I thought we'd all go for a week."
"That's great!" Phil said. "I'll pack!"

Soz about that. I don't log in on the weekend much.

Papa! Phil shouted. "You're here!"
Jack Maynard smiled slowly. "Hello Phil," he said. "I'm sorry."
"Sorry for what?" Phil said.
"For what happened at Freudesheim, the jewellers and for not being able to reply to your letters. I wanted to forgive you a long time ago. But..."
"But Mama wouldn't let you!" Phil answered for him.
"Yes, she won't forgive you. But I see your point now. I borrowed one of Ned's books from the library the other day, I had to hide it in a medical dust jacket so your mother wouldn't see. It was suprisingly good. I know I've a hot temper Phil. ALways have done, but I won't let my temper spoil someone elses happiness, especially my own daughters, my littlest ones."
"Of course I forgive you. Papa, I forgave you a long time ago. Anyway, I was the one to blame. I shouldn't have argued with you that night, I should've waited..."
"Its all in the past now Phil. C'mon shake!" They shook hands.
"Papa, will you lead me up the aisle?" Phil asked.
"I I'd love too, but isn't the service c of e?"
"Its both, so it'd be OK."
"Very well, c'mon Phil or we'll be late!"

Phillippa Anne Buchan left the church and was driven over to the local hotel where the reception was to be held.
Sitting at the high table Phil watched the guests for a moment. Ned sat next to her, and her father sat on the other side. There was still room for Peter at the table, the understanding manager had neatly inserted another chair on the already full table so Peter, looking reasonably smart for once in his life was busy talking to Jack. The speeches were the usual mixture of tears and joking, with Simon managing to leave hisnotes in his car and having to send Melanie out to fetch it. Melanie, an up and cming athelete grinned and dressed in a long dress and smart shoes managed to reach the car and come back without much delay.
Then Jack stood up. "This is one of my proudest moments." He said. "I, I know I have not always been there for Phil, in fact I left her when she needed me most. But I am so proud of her, and the wonderful man she has married, I may not be able to see her much in future, I may never see any grandchildren they may have, but they'll be in my heart always and I hope that I will be in theirs."

The reception was over and the bride and groom were about to leave. Phil was still puzzling over her Father's speech. She resolved to go and find him after the honeymoon, something seemed not quite right about Jack, he was retiring soon, she knew that and Joey kept pressuring to try new things though all he wanted was to move back home to England. Phil smiled on the outside as she waved goodbye to the guests. Her father walked over to the car just before they left.
"Don't worry Phil, you'll be alright."
"I'm not worried about me I'm worried about you!"
Jack looked slightly solemn. "I'll be fine for now, don't you worry, I'll still be here when you get back. I'm here for a month for buisiness and a proper rest for once. Have a wonderful time Phil."
"I will Papa, you enjoy your rest."

"Oh Papa!" Phil began to cry.
"Hush, don't worry Philly, it'll be alright, sometimes it hurts so much now. I am on every single drug the specialist can think of that has a slight chance of helping, but nothing works anymore." Jack sat down slowly. "I wnated to see that you were happy Phil baba. I shouldn't have come, I should have realised it would upset you..."

Freudisheim
Jack opened the parcel from his armchair where he spent most of his time since he had retired from the san. His idea had been to work until he was physically unable to, but once Joey had found out how ill he was she insisted that he should retire. As a result Jack was bored, so the arrival of a letter from Phil under the guise of Smith's Publishing LTD London, was a welcome suprise. Even better was the hardback novel, complete with extra dust jacket (TB through the Ages, the definitive study. Jack peeked under the new dustjacker to look at the real cover. Phil's friend had done a good job. A large greeny blue pearl dominated the cover with a pale shade of a face reflecting off it." Replacing the dustcover rapidly, as Joey walked into the room, Jack began to read.

Loo,ks like they like it!
See you soon. We've started a new book, so there'll be some more for you to read next time you're here.

PS theres a new golf place nearby that you'd like, and MR Jones at the pub says he can't wait to see you again!"

"Post? You woke me up cos of post? Probably just bills."
"Nope, theres a letter for you from the publishers."
Phil reached out a hand and picked up the letter, after several dud attempts she managed to open it and tried to focus on the print.
"THEY'VE ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!!" She shouted.
"What?"
"My book, they've accepted it!"
"Oh Phil thats great!" Ned hugged her.

2. Ned
"You what? Phil! how wonderful!" Ned said. "When?" He looked panicky.
"Not yet, not for a while even."
"Th-thats good, isn't it?"
"Of course it is!" Phil laughed, "Now let me get up, I need to ring the publishers!"
