Title: A New Family at the CS ~ back again! Post by Vikki on Nov 9th, 2003, 10:31pm Okay, having been swallowed again, it's back! Part one ~ http://members.lycos.co.uk/thecbb/newfamily.html Part two ~ http://members.lycos.co.uk/thecbb/newfamilypt2.html Reposting what was in the thread that was swallowed: After Mittagessen, the school had a rest period of an hour, where the girls all rested in deckchairs in Hall, and read their books in silence. Beth was thrilled by this, as it meant she could get started on 'The School by the Lake'. The hour of the rest period seemed to pass far too quickly for her liking, and when the bell rang, dragging her from fathoms deep in the story, she reluctantly closed her book, and joined the rest of the form as they returned the deckchairs to the neat stacks whick were concealed behind curtains in alcoves at either side of the stage. The next lesson for Va was gym, which Beth was secretly dreading, having no aptitude for it whatsoever!!! Her sense of foreboding was proved to be correct when she slipped whilst trying to climb the ropes, and fell to the ground. Fortunately she had only managed to reach a height of three feet from the ground, but she landed awkwardly, twisting her right foot beneath her. Miss Burnett, the games mistress, and another Old Girl of the school, came racing over to her and, dropping to her knees beside the girl, ran experienced hands over the injured foot and ankle. Even this gentle touch caused so much pain that Beth gave a small scream, and fainted. Peggy Burnett sent Felicity racing to find Matron, and despatched Lucy to the small store room that was situated next to the gym, to fetch a blanket to lay over the injured girl. When Lucy returned with the blanket, Peggy spread it gently over Beth's still form, and also took the time to remove the gym shoe from the injured foot. She had just finished this, when 'Matey' arrived, trailed by an anxious, and slightly tearful, Felicity. Having performed a swift examination of Beth's foot and come to the conclusion that the ankle was badly sprained, Matey enlisted the four sturdiest members of the form to link up and make a human stretcher, to carry their injured formmate along to the school san. Beth roused up as she was deposited gently upon a bed in the san. She looked around in utter confusion, being rather disorientated from her swoon. But then, as she tried to sit up, the movement sent a red hot knife of pain through her injured ankle, eliciting a sharp cry of anguish from her. The pain cleared the fog from her brain, and she remembered what had happened in gym class. Matey dismissed her impromptu stretcher bearers, with a word of thanks, assuring them, in response to an anxious query, that Beth would be fine. She then turned her attention to her patient. Producing a clean pair of pyjamas, a basin of cold water, some bandages and a bottle of liniment, Matey proceeded to deal with her patient. She first helped Beth to undress and don the pyjamas, and then bathed the injured foot in the cool water, before rubbing it gently with her patent liniment, and then bandaging it firmly to give it some support. This tretment left Beth feeling very weak, (although the pain in her ankle had eased considerably, once it was expertly bandaged) and she was relieved when Matron told her she'd be staying where she was for the next few days, at least. The school's domestic tyrant settled her charge into a bed with crisp clean sheets and fluffy pillows, and bade her to try and sleep. Beth, exhausted by the day's traumas, fell asleep almost at once, and Matey, whose bark was far worse than her bite, smoothed the sheets over her with a gentle hand, before slipping from the room to inform the Head of her pupil's state of health. (please note that this includes the bit I'd just posted when it disappeared!) |

However, on arrival there, she found the daintily appointed room deserted. Miss Annersley's private sitting room presented her with the same blank contenance, so Matron hurried along to the staff room, hoping that the Head might have decided to join her staff for Kaffee und Kuchen (the equivelent of afternoon tea), as she sometimes did. Matey's hunch proved to be correct, and she entered the attractively decorated room, which was the private province of the staff, to find Miss Annersley, and her co-head, Miss Wilson, head of the school's finishing branch, St Mildred's, being regaled with cream cakes and the delicious coffee which Jeanne Lachenais, the doyenne of the staff, was renowned for. As Matey entered the room, Hilda Annersley happened to glance up and catch her eye. What she saw in the elder woman's face brought her to her feet with an exclamation! "Gwynneth! What on earth has happened?" |

The room fell silent at Miss Annersley's exclamation, and all eyes turned to Matron's face. Peggy Burnett, the games mistress, ventured a query. "Is it that little ass, Beth Jacobson? How much damage has she done to herself Matey?" "You're quite right Peggy, it is indeed Beth Jacobson! I'm afraid she won't be attending any more gym or games classes this term." At this point, the Head intervened, "What exactly has happened to Beth Jacobson? I seem to have missed something here!" "I'm sorry, Hilda!" Said Matey contritely, "Beth managed to fall from the climbing ropes in gym class this afternoon. She didn't fall very far, I believe it was a matter of about two feet, but she landed awkwardly and injured her foot. It's a very nasty sprain, and I suspect she may have broken a couple of the small bones in her foot! I intend to get one of the San doctors to come and have a look at the foot, and if I'm right, the poor girl may need a plaster cast." |

"That poor kid!" She gasped, "I'd no idea she'd damaged herself so badly." "You weren't to know, Peggy." Matron reassured her, "I get the impression the child has never been taught the safe way to fall." Peggy looked more than a little relieved on receiving this absolution. She had been feeling rather guilty since the accident. The Head spoke just then, drawing Matey's attention back to the matter in hand. "May I see Beth, Gwynneth?" She said quietly. "Of course Hilda, I'm hoping she will be asleep by now, I gave her some hot milk, with a little something in it. But by all means come and have a peep at her." Rosalie Dene rose from her chair, and headed for the door, saying as she went, "I'll go and call San, and ask them to send a doctor along to have a look at her. Oh, and what about Beth's sisters? They're sure to notice that she's missing, and will probably be going frantic over her! If you remember, when Mrs Jacobson wrote to us to enroll the girls, she mentioned that they have an unusually close bond?" "What would I do without you, Rosalie?" Asked the Head, with a fond glance at the younger woman. "As soon as I've seen Beth, and put my mind at rest about her, I'll send someone to bring her sisters to me in the study, and I'll explain what has happened." |

With this, the three women left the room, leaving the rest of the staff to discuss the latest happenings. When they reached the door to the office, Rosalie left the two elder women, and went in to place her call. Meanwhile, Matey led her Head along the corridor to the San, and permitted her a quick look at Beth, who was sleeping peacefully, in no pain at the moment, thanks to the small dose which Matey had slipped into a mug of hot milk for her. Satisfied that her pupil was comfortable, Hilda returned to her study, where she crossed to the fireplace, and rang the bell. When one of the maids answered the summons, Hilda requested her to send one of the prefects to the study. Five minutes later, there was a tap on the door, and in answer to the Head's quietly spoken "Come in", Xanthe Smith, the school's history genius, and this year's music prefect, entered the room. Hilda Annersley smiled at the slight, studious looking girl, and said "Ah, Xanthe, my dear, I have a favour to ask you." "What can... um I mean , What may I do for you, Miss Annersley?" Said Xanthe, flushing pink at her near grammatical blunder. The Head suppressed a grin, she knew what Xanthe was thinking! "One of our new girls, Beth Jacobson, has injured herself. Her sisters will be missing her before long, and I don't want them panicking. Would you collect them up and bring them here for me, so that I can explain matters to them?" "Of course, Miss Annersley!" Said Xanthe, "Should I tell them anything, or just say that you wish to see them?" "If I were you, I should just say that I wish to see them. If they ask about Beth, just say that I will explain everything to them." Hilda replied, having given the question due consideration. "Thank you for this , my dear!" Xanthe paused, mid-curtsey, and replied, "It's my pleasure, Miss Annersley." as she slipped out of the door. After another five minutes, there came another tap at the door, and in reply to Hilda's request to come in, the door opened again, and Xanthe ushered in the five younger Jacobsons. |

My plot bunny is only weeny and he's exhausted!! Hilda smiled at Xanthe, thanked her, and sent her back to her work. Then she turned to the five girls, who were her immediate concern. The elder three, Kate, Meg and Anne, wore worried expressions, while the youngest two, Jo and Amy, looked frankly terrified. They had suddenly woken up to the fact that their eldest sister was missing, towards the end of Kaffee und Kuchen, and had been getting more and more panicky, until Xanthe had arrived with the Head's summons. They had realised that something bad must have happened, but they couldn't think what it could be. Felicity, who had intended to inform them of the accident, and reassure them that Beth would be okay, had unfortunately succumbed to an attack of migraine, triggered by the shock of Beth's accident, and had been whisked off to bed by Matron Henschell, one of the junior matrons, and an old girl of the school. It hadn't occurred to the rest of Va to mention the event, and so the sisters h.ad been left in the dark. "Sit down girls." Said the Head kindly, "Now, don't look so scared! I'm sure you've realised by now that Beth has had a little accident. She fell from the ropes in gym class, and landed awkwardly, damaging her foot. She is in the school San at the moment, and must stay where she is, for the next few days at least, but Matron assures me she won't suffer any lasting harm, although her foot is very painful at the moment." |

As the Head finished speaking, there was a strangled gulp, and Amy, who was very close to her eldest sister, burst into a storm of sobs! Her sisters crowded round her and tried to comfort her, but she was well away, and unable to stop. Miss Annersley rose from her desk and crossed the room to the distraught child. Gently putting the concerned elder sisters aside, she sat down next to Amy, and drew the child onto her lap, slipping a clean, fresh handkerchief into the hot little hand. "Hush now, Amy." She said, smoothing the tousled head, "Beth isn't badly hurt, although she'll be feeling pretty sorry for herself for a little while!" "R-really?" Gulped Amy, through her tears. "Really." Said Miss Annersley, with a smile. "And if you upset yourself like this, you won't be able to go with the others to visit her when she wakes up. Then she'll want to know why, and will fret about it. Which would slow down her recovery. Now you don't want that, do you dear?" Amy made a valiant effort, and choked back her sobs, scrubbing her eyes with the handkerchief. "O-of c-course n-not, Miss Annersley," she gulped "I'm s-sorry for b-being s-such a b-baby!" Hilda gave the girl a gentle squeeze. "All right my dear. Now, why don't you pop into the little cloakroom over there, and wash your face, and I'll 'phone Matron and see if Beth is awake yet." |

Now, I'm going to 'phone Matron and find out if Beth is awake yet." She placed the call on the internal system, which connected her directly to Matron's office. After a few minutes of quiet conversation, she replaced the receiver and turned to the five anxious girls (Amy had returned, and looked more or less her usual self, except for a slight redness about the eyes.) "Well, Matron tells me that Beth has just woken up, and has been asking for you all. So I'm going to take you along to the San now and you may have twenty minutes together." "Thank you, Miss Annersley" they chorused happily, relief sweeping through them. The Head smiled at their enthusiasm, and hustled them out of the door, and along the corridor towards San, to see their sister. |

Post by Vikki on Today at 1:29am I know you're teasing KB, but I am struggling a bit, I tend to loose impetus, and this is the longest thing I've ever written, and probably wouldn't have got this far if not for you guys! Anyway, bowing to pressure, here's the next bit..... Beth was sitting up in bed, leaning back against a mound of pillows. She was rather paler than usual, but her face lit up at the sight of her sisters, just as theirs did at sight of her. Amy broke away from the others, to fling herself at her big sister, but then stopped short, afraid of hurting her. "Don't I get a hug then?" Asked Beth, with a smile. "I don't want to hurt your foot." Amy said, folornly. "Come here, silly! You can still give me a hug, just don't throw yourself at me like you usually do!" As she said this, Beth held her arms out to her little sister, who snuggled into the hug with a beautific smile. The Head and Matey slipped from the room, leaving the sisters together. As they left the room, the last thing they saw was the other four sisters slipping forward to join the hug. The girls clung together for several minutes, and then gently released each other. Beth looked at her sisters and said, "I'm sorry for scaring you guys!" "So you should be!" Said Kate severely, frowning at her sister. "Does it hurt awfully Beth?" "We-ell," said the elder girl, "it's okay at the moment, Matron gave me some painkillers, but it was pretty bad earlier. I'm afraid I fainted when I did it!" She blushed with shame at this admission. "Matron says she's sent for one of the doctors from the San to come and look at it, as she thinks I might have broken something....." Beth's voice trailed off, and she produced a hideous grimace at this thought. Just then, the door opened, and Matey came back into the room, followed by a tall fair man, with a pleasant face. "I'm afraid you girls must run along now. Dr Maynard is here to look at Beth's foot, and you five have prep." She smiled as the six youthful faces all assumed identical lugubrious expressions, and continued, "Don't look so glum, you may come back for ten minutes after prayers to see how she is. Now, scat, all of you!" Beth and her sisters exchanged grimaces, as the younger girls trooped to the door, but thanked Matron politely, nonetheless. |
