Title: New arrivals for the Chalet School
Post by ariella on Aug 13th, 2003, 11:20am
Jo Maynard looked out the window in wonder. Soon her husband would be arriving with their two latest wards. Rachel and Penelope Naylor had lost both parents as well as their older brother in a flood six months before. Jo had learnt of their story when she was visiting her sister Madge and on learning that they had no-one had promptly sought to take them under her wing. Penelope was the same age as Felicity and Rachel was two years younger so it had been agreed by all members of the Bettany/Maynard family that they would fit in nicely. Today they would be arriving and spending two weeks at Freudheism before joining as members of the Chalet School. Three barks and the sound of running woke Jo from her thoughts as Darni raced into the room and attempted to knock his mistress down. Jo giggled as she looked at the large St Bernard puppy she had aquired at the same time as the flood. Most families would have considered even one St Bernard a challenge to house but her friends had only supressed giggles and said "only Jo" when they heard the news.

"Don't worry, pup" she calmed the excited young dog, "it's only the master arriving with our new wards. I hope you're not going to bounce all over them" she finished sternly, her attempts to calm the excited hound, somewhat futile.
Hurrying to the door and pausing only to ensure that her great earphones were pinned neatly to her head, Joey flung open the door, ready to greet her charges.

Rachel (*thank you, Ariella - great name!) and Penelope entered shyly, somewhat overwhelmed by the long journey and effusive welcome emanating from Mrs Maynard.
Seconds later Bruno and Darni careered into the hallway, keen to add their own barks and licks of welcome. Both girls shrank behind their hostess

"Bruno! Darni! Get down! " commanded Jack
"I'm sorry, girls" smiled Joey "Those dogs can be a handful but you'll soon get used to them ..."
"I don't think so, Mrs Maynard" said Penelope nervously
"Why ever not child?"
"We-ell, we love dogs but the only problem is we're allergic and they set off all sorts of breathing problems for us .. it's the long hair, you see"

For once in her life, Josephine Mary Maynard was speechless!

"Well this is a large enough house!  I'm sure we can sort something out."  Jack said briskly.
"M-maybe we shouldn't be here after all."  Penelope stuttered, tears in her eyes.
"I want Mummy."  Rachel began to cry and motherly instincts to the fore, Jo left the dogs to Jack and swept the girls into the Saal, sitting down on the settee and taking Rachel on her knee with Penelope beside her, an arm round each of them.

"Of course we want you here! Hush now dear, don't fret," Joey said softly. "Otherwise your uncle Jack will send you to bed with a cup of hot milk and a sleeping draught! We can't be having that within ten minutes of you arriving here, can we?"
"Would he really do that?" asked Penelope.
"Oh, he's certainly done it before" Joey replied wryly. "Don't look so horrified - he won't give you a dose unless he feels you need one, and I don't think you'll need one after you've had some of this lovely tea that Anna has prepared."
The two girls looked at the tea trolly with interest. There were buns and biscuits, and something that was swamped with cream that looked delicious. "Tuck in" encouraged Jo. "Tea, coffee or lemonade for you?"
Both girls asked for lemonade, so Joey went to fetch some from the kitchen, where she found Jack helping himself to a glass of water. "Pass me two tall glasses Jack, there's a dear".
"Here you go. We'll have to shunt the girls upstairs before long you know."
Joey, in the middle of pouring lemonade was startled, and sloshed the drink over the glass. "Look what you made me do Jack! Pass me that cloth and explain what you mean, my good man."
"Well, if the girls are allergic to fur, they must move away from rooms where the dogs usually go. The dogs do not go upstairs, except in extreme cases, and we must see how badly their allergies are."
Joey nodded and left the room. She had never come across this problem before, and she didn't want her new wards to come to any harm. What would they do if the allergies were serious? The girls couldn't stay with the Graves or the Courvoisers (sp??) because Biddy's husband loved dogs and was talking of getting a new St Bernard. This was going to be a difficult problem to solve.

This was nothing to her horror however on entering the salon to discover that Rachel and Penelope were both gasping for breath and that Rachel in particular was emmitting whistling sounds every time she breathed. In shock Joey realised that the child's lips and face was swelling and that both children were also scratching their hands. She screamed loudly for Jack as she flew across the room to gather the two suffering girls to her. :'(

Jo then decided that the ppor childrens allergies were very bad indeed, in her desperation she made a hasty call to the Chalet school where matey,( who was always ready to rudh to the assistance of her darling) agreed to come at once.

While Matey prepared, Jo called an ambulance and moved the ill girls outside where she thought there would be less allergens and good mountain air was a cure-all.

Unfortunately, as Rachel managed to gasp out, they both also had allergies to pollen. She would have explained further, but by then her eyes had swollen shut and her hands were also starting to swell...

(This is going to be interesting. I don't think they had cortisone then.)

Fortunately, however, the Swiss weather decided to lend a hand, and a monstrous storm blew up, blowing all the pollen away from the girls. It also had the effect of removing all the dog hairs, and the allergens (what is it in dog hair that actually causes reactions? I should know, being allergic myself!) off their clothes and skin, and their symptoms immediately grew less severe. They were not yet out of danger, however, and things looked grim to Joey.

I don't know what I'm going to do with you two. I think there's an allergy speciallist at the san. Come on in now and have some of Anna's cream cakes..."
"We can't Penelope said. "I'm lactose ntollerant."
"And I'm allergic to gluten in wheat" said the other.

"Right!" said Matey taking an arm of each girl. "I think the best thiing possible is for you two to come straight over to the school now where there will be no dogs to bother your allergies."

Marching the girls across the lawn, Matron looked her grimmest. Lactose intolerant, allergies to wheat, pollen and dogs. She wouldn't believe a word of it!

Unfortunately, Matron had forgotten that although the school didn't contain any dogs, it did contain a cat, Minette, who sashayed into view just as Matron was leading the two girls upstairs to a dormitory . . .

Title: Re: New arrivals for the Chalet School
Post by ariella on Aug 18th, 2003, 7:48am
Rachel looked at Penelope and wondered if she should say anything. Before she had a chance Matron spotted Minette and turned to the girls.

"I suppose you are allergic to cat hair also?" she asked grimly.

"Oh no matron" replied both girls at once. "We had a beautiful siamese cat for years growing up.

"Well at least we can be thankful for something. Now, perhaps I should put you both in the same dormitory for the moment since theres still another two weeks before school begins. I'm sure the Maynards will work something out before then though so don't worry too much about it."

(my poor girls!!!! sigh ... you've made them such sicklings)

The pair grimanced at each other, this matron perosn seemed all too brisk for their liking and they were both feeling very ill still

Title: Re: New arrivals for the Chalet School
Post by Rachel on Aug 18th, 2003, 12:22pm
Penelope and Rachel were left alone in a small dormitory with strict instructions to lie down on the bed until such time as Matron could come back to them. As the two girls lay there, they whispered to each other.
"I don't think much of all this Rachel! At least in the children's home people were nice to us! We weren't made to feel as if we were in the way, and it's not as if we can help having so many allergies! Why on earth didn't Mrs Maynard check up on all that before asking to adopt us?"

"I don't know Penelope. Seems to me she didn't really think about us as real people at all!"

Without realising it, Rachel had hit the nail on the head. Mrs Maynard hadn't actually considered these girls needs, but instead had seen herself to be playing Lady Bountiful once more, ministering to the needy and supplying mothering to those who had no family. Jo was going to be in for a lot of squalls with these two new girls in one way and another!

Title: Re: New arrivals for the Chalet School
Post by Lisa_T on Aug 18th, 2003, 8:04pm
Later on Penelope was moved to investigate the contents of the dormitory. She got out of bed and walked over to the big bureau in the corner, and gave a gasp.
"what's the matter?" her sister enquired.
Penelope turned round to look at her. "We really are in for a miserable time," she said glumly. "These handles are made from metal!"
Rachel (that was her name, wasn't it?) looked aghast. "Oh no! Now we've got to tell that Matey woman that we're allergic to nickel as well!"

Title: Re: New arrivals for the Chalet School

At that point Minette jumped through the open window. Rachel was moved to walk over and stroke the beast, which was unfortunate, because the girls may have suffered no reaction from their Siamese cat, Minette was not a Siamese. She was a long haired black cat, and longer haired black cats cause more allergic reactions than any of their feline cousins...

(Sorry)

Fortunately, Matron came back before their allergies had a chance to get too strong a hold, removed the cat, and phoned the san for an ambulance!
The girls were carted off in the ambulance attatched to nebulisers, unfortunately, no one had realised that they had an allergy to latex...... and the straps on the nebuliser masks were made of.....Yes, latex!!!! By the time they arrived at the san both girls were very sick indeed. In fact, they were still, red, blotchy and, to all appearance, dead......... ;)

I think they're allergic to life full stop! (modern or otherwise!)

So, shall we have them make a miraculous recovery? Or shall we start planning an elaborate funeral (and a medical inquiry!!)? ;)

Title: Re: New arrivals for the Chalet School

Wht not kill one of them - just to satisfy the more blood thirsty among us - then have the doctors find a miracle cure for the other one at the last minute?  Tha San could then go on to be the world's leading centre for the treatment of allergies and they could continue to have patients (with schoolgirl daughters) referred to them from all over the world.

Penelope was sitting in a bed at the San trying to explain for the umpteenth time that Rachel and herself had severe allergies, but that did NOT make them freaks.

"All we need is a very simple lifestyle really," she was telling the doctor who looked at her in disbelief.  "Natural fibres, natural products, no animals kept with or near us, no flowering plants grown in the garde, in fact it's better to have no garden at all really, and no lactose or gluten! Surely that's not too much to ask of anyone?"

At just this moment Joey Maynard swept into the room.

"Girls! I think I've got it sorted now! Just wait til you hear my plan!" she cried merrily at the pair

Tthese are only drabbles, not a fully edited and revised fill-in being primed for publication ... we can nitpick every inconsistency or just go with the flow and appreciate the story ....

Which reminds me, I seem to recall a really excellent drabble about Con which had its own fair share of errors (Rufus in Switzerland anyone?!) but after a plea from its author the readers allowed her to get on with the plot in peace ...  ;D

And more importantly, no self-respecting EBD take-off should be free from glaring EBDisms  ;)

"Your mum wrote a letter?" asked Joey, wondering if the medication was having an adverse affect on the girls.
"Yes, she wrote it before she died. She knew what our symptoms were, and how to reduce them because she was a doctor you see. We carry them around all the time - the doctors have them at the moment to copy into our files. And the adoption agency have a copy of that letter which they photocopy and send to anyone who inquires about adopting us." Penelope smiled up at Joey. "You really ought to read it carefully, you know."
Joey glared at Penelope for a full minute, and then bit her lip. "You're right, and I'm terribly sorry Penelope. You see, we've not had anything like this up here before - I'll go home right away and sit down with Jack, Anna and some people from the school so that we can make your lives up here bearable. Do you forgive me?"
"Of course we do Mrs Maynard." It was Rachel who spoke and she held out her arms to Joey, who hugged her carefully. "We're sorry to be such pains".
"Oh you're not, don't worry. And now I'd best be off and start planning events to make up for you being in hospital for so long".

*Clare keeps her fingers crossed in the hope she's solved the mystery of the letter*.

(The intentional inconsistencies aren't the problem  :) You should see the battles I've been having with Joey Maynard though who is currently refusing to do her duty and have an affair, mainly based on the grounds that she doesn't have time!)

Penelope and Rachel were left alone in the San while the arrangements were being made to make life more bearable for them. The trouble seemed now to be that so much attention was being paid to their physical well-being, that very little thought was being given to their mental health. They had both been such a turbulent and traumatic time lately, but it seemed to be being overlooked in the panic caused by their medical problems. It was a terrible fact that these two young girls had so recently lost their parents and their brother. And there was still no word of anyone ever having found their sister's body after that awful flood.

"We'll be sorry to see you go" said Joey. "But it really is best for your health, and the Chalet School is always known for putting its pupils' health before all else - I should know that!"
"What do you mean Mrs Maynard?" asked the girls, glad to have something to occupy their minds.
"Well my dears, I was the frailest thing as a kid. I only had to walk past the front door to get a cold. Then, when I was twelve Madge, my sister, decided to set up a school in the Tyrol by the Tiernsee, the most beautiful lake in all of Austria." The tale was familiar to the members of the Chalet School, but it was entirely fresh for Joey's wards. They listened enthralled by the tales of her adventures and near death experiences. "We're joking Mrs Maynard!" said Penelope quickly, as Joey looked set to swoon.
"Funny joke" said Joey wryly, making a mental note to carefully read the letter from the adoption agency as soon as she got home. "I'll see you tomorrow" she said, bestowing a kiss on each girl.
As the girls prepared to go to sleep, Rachel said, "It'll be a pity not to go to the Chalet School. Mrs Maynard seems to have had such thrilling adventures!"
"Yes" Penelope agreed, "but let's face it, I'd rather have adventures away from everything we're allergic of!"
