Title: Re: Real CS Epilogue/Lesley's Nemesis #3
Post by Elinor on Nov 24th, 2003, 7:29am
The figure continued.
“I have every reason to believe that Hilda Annersley, Helena Wilson and their colleagues may try to join you. I wish to know where they are coming from and I …”, the head tilted deliberately, “… I insist that you tell me. I know that they are in Australia but I must know the specific area. You may answer the question voluntarily but if necessary I will,” Elinor paused, as if choosing her next word carefully, “assist you …” The words hung threateningly in the air.
Lesley felt a familiar pang of fear gnawing at her gut. She could sense Pat glancing at her, as if to say, “I told you so”, but instinctively she knew that Elinor’s gaze would rest on her. She was right.
“You”, the figure pointed in her direction.
Lesley stood, willingly herself not to waver. “I won’t tell you” she stated, drawing on every scrap of courage. You may have us at your mercy, Elinor but I will never willingly betray a friend.”
“So predictable, Lesley” scoffed the voice, “I see you are steeling yourself against whatever I may choose to inflict on you. So naïve … have you learnt nothing? I thought I had made it clear that you would be the final issue on my agenda, you and Hilda Annersley.”
Lesley swallowed.

“Stupid woman!” the voice bellowed. “I will not spend hours tormenting you in order to get a simple answer. Far quicker for me to extend the courtesy to your companions, perhaps that will focus your mind.”
The figure turned abruptly towards Pat W. “Come here.”
Pat rose, her eyes glinting dangerously. “Do your worst, Elinor” she muttered impetuously.
The figure straightened angrily.
“I think you underestimate me, Patricia. Are you watching Lesley? It’s within your power to stop this, any time you wish. Just say the word.”
Pat darted a look at Lesley, who stood motionless, appalled, and spoke sharply in an undertone. “Lesley, this is my decision, not yours. Elinor may do her damndest but I will not have you intervening or speaking for me. I’ve no idea what she’s got in store or whether I can take it but I’ll call the shots. Don’t you dare speak on my behalf …”
She was cut off halfway through her speech but Lesley understood the gist and groaned inwardly. Facing one’s own torture was bad enough but watching another’s was unspeakable, especially when you hold yourself responsible. She stepped backwards, closing her eyes momentarily against what might come. In some ways, it would have been easier to be the prime target. Lesley fought the nausea rising in her throat.
A consoling voice spoke behind her.
“Leave it, Lesley. Pat can handle this. Don’t intervene on behalf of her, it’s simply not her style. She can control her own destiny. She knows where Hilda is, we all do, and she can tell Elinor if it gets too much. She’s relinquished you from all responsibility, that’s all you need to know. Don’t wade in to save her –she won’t thank you for it.” Carolyn grimaced sympathetically as she spoke.
Lesley accepted Carolyn’s words with resignation.
‘Bloody marvellous’ she thought, ‘Not only have I brought Elinor to the party but now I get to watch her torture my friends. What the hell am I supposed to do?'

*sits back emotionally exhausted after catching up with the weekend's posts*

It's all been happening, hasn't it?! Elinor's been very busy!
*shudders*
I have to say, Pat, you're very brave. I wonder what she has in store for you? I hope I'm that brave when it's my turn ...  :(
*prepares to stand up and be counted*

If she fails to capture me, I suspect she will turn her attentions to Lesley, and those closest to her

I have to say, that I'm more than a little worried by Hilda's concerns - Lesley and Rachael P seem to be good buddies on this - help!!

Still can't figure out who it is though  :-/
I definitely don't think it's Lesley and it does seem strange that Rachel has gone very quiet on the board - hmmmmm ....
They must be spending a fair proportion of each day thinking eveil thoughts  >:( and giggling uncontrollably!! 8oo

However, I'm not changing my reponse just because I'm targeted!  It's probably *because* I've been goading her that it's my turn now!!

You seem very resigned to your fate!
*impressed*

Do you think Elinor has something up her sleeve for you which will be as applicable as KB and Vikki's?!

(I know I shouldn't but I did chuckle a little at the poetic justice of their shared predicament!)

We've all been goading her, so I don't think that that's the reason, Pat. I think she's picking on people at random. I also think that she's frozen KB & Vikki because they were getting near the truth. Perhaps we should all read those posts again.

It's really weird, being in a drabble!  I keep wanting to respond for the me in it, if you follow that!!  It's very difficult to leave my response for someone else to write!

Ellie only seems to post in the early morning, andin the evening, but if you're watching as your alta ego, do your worst, my dear!  I will not show fear (even if I feel it)! I refuse to give you that satisfaction!   :P  :P

Hey, Ellie, wellie, jellie, you tried it on me, and I'm still here. Do you know why, I've never told anyone what my real fear is, so you're not as omniscient as you think you are.

Ludicrous, aren't you, being fooled like that.

Well, Ellie's certainly been doing her homework, hasn't she?!!  I was on a few times over the weekend and Liss was around but not for huge periods of time and I wouldn't have thought she posts enough to know what Ellie appears to know.  I didn't see Rachel logged in either but anyone can lurk.  Ellie, whoever she is, is definitely very quick on the uptake though and she is obviously doing whatever she can to deflect suspicion.

Also, would you necessarily have to know about Cambridge?  Oxford may well have a similar posting system.

I'm keeping a tick chart of who/how often people have been included. Some names do seem to crop up quite often don't they!

And just for all you suspicious people, I've been in bed and poorly, and that's why I haven't been around or posting lately! I deserve sympathy, not suspicion!

Once again the lighting dimmed except for a spotlight on Pat. She had paled significantly and her body was tense but she was eye-balling Elinor with as much bravado as she could muster. Elinor returned the stare dispassionately. The CBBers looked on with bated breath, filled with admiration for the stance Pat was taking but anxious about the inevitable consequences. This tableau continued for a minute or two but finally Pat had to look away as the anticipation proved too much. She braced herself for whatever was to come, gritting her teeth and fixing her sights on an invisible spot on the wall opposite. Elinor continued to watch her impassively. She seemed to be taking a malicious pleasure in delaying the moment and observing the mounting tension.
“Where is Hilda Annersley?”  The voice suddenly cracked like a whip, reverberating across the hushed room. One or two of the more nervy CBBers jumped.
“I won’t tell you” Pat’s own voice was clear and steady but she maintained eye contact with the wall.
“Very well” Elinor did not sound unduly disappointed.

The quotation from King Lear, is when Lear is cursing his daughters Goneril and Regan for their attempts to strip him of his retinue, that's why I said that the curse would work only if the people who were being cursed were the children of your body.

No, I'm not evil EBD, I'm an ex-English teacher who's taught King Lear more times than she cares to remember.

Think of this, -'A man may smile and smile and be a villain.' Hamlet.

Hmm, that was a short post wasn't it? Not up to your usual length Ellie!!!!!!!

Poor Pat is being made to wait in anticipation. Maybe that is part of the torture? Evil.  :o

Lesley, yes it did feel odd with Real CS to be included in a story where you couldn't control your own actions or reply to something that happened to you. I think Ellie is being wise in this respect by not taking part in any discussion, it keeps the distance to a certain extent. How did you find it when you were writing real CS and people commented on what their characters were doing?

Title: Re: Real CS Epilogue/Lesley's Nemesis #3
Post by Lesley on Nov 24th, 2003, 10:49pm
Carolyn - I don't think it was such a problem when I was writing because, with only a few exceptions, the posts with all of you in were incidental to the story - you may have noticed i concentrated on Hilda and Nell ;)

Some of the ones where I did concentrate on CBBers were mostly for fun, and of course when I wrote about myself there was no problem - and i'd spoken to Rachael about those posts as well.

These ones are going much deeper - and somewhat uncomfortably so as far as I'm concerned!!

Title: Re: Real CS Epilogue/Lesley's Nemesis #3
Post by Elinor on Nov 24th, 2003, 10:50pm
As Pat focused on the stonework in front of her, it began to blur and sway before changing shape. The other CBBers looked on astounded as the wall altered, taking on the blue skies and sunshine of Sydney. The Opera House could be seen in the background and, across the bay, the glorious vista of Manly.
“Kathryn, is that Darling Harbour or the Rocks?” Lisa_T asked her neighbour in an undertone. It had been some years since she lived in Australia.
“Could be either” replied Kathryn, but then as the panorama shifted upwards, assuming height, she exclaimed, “No, it’s the view from Sydney Harbour Bridge …”
“I take it Pat suffers from vertigo then?” Lisa posed a rhetorical question.
Pat meanwhile was staring with fixation at the wall and had flung out her arms as if to balance herself like a tightrope walker.
“So what’s the deal with the Harbour Bridge?” demanded Nicolette. “Surely you can’t climb it?”
“Oh you can,” affirmed Kathryn, “But it’s totally safe. You’re locked on like a climber with karibenas, rope, the full works. You’re attached to the bridge and everything you’re got is attached to you – shades, hat, hankies, you name it, there’s no margin for error because of the traffic flowing underneath. It’s quite easy really, like a flight of stairs but it’s very open, as you can see there, and if you were subject to vertigo it would be very intimidating.”
As if to corroborate this point, Pat froze, clutching at hidden handrails, but to no avail. She had no support and she was reliant on her own equilibrium. She was held here for what seemed like an aeon but not a word or sound passed her lips.

Eventually, Elinor closed in on her from behind,
“Have you anything to tell me, Patricia?”
“No!” Pat’s voice was hoarse but still strong. “It’ll take more than a bridge to break me, you b*tch.”
The figure’s eyes narrowed at this insolence. The image began to transform, this time a taller erection which Dorothy recognised as the Sears Tower in Chicago.
“That’s the highest building in the States”, she hissed, “It’s even taller than the Empire State.”
Pat appeared to be at the very top and at the very edge. She also seemed to be trying to back away towards the centre of the building, as if to locate her own centre of gravity but something was forcing her back towards the edge, insistently. Abruptly, the skyline disappeared as Pat endeavoured to resist the compulsion to look down. There were a number of muffled gasps as a handful of CBBers empathised with Pat. It was a sheer drop, dizzying in its scope, the cars and people below like matchbox toys.
Pat bit her lip, the giddiness threatening to overwhelm her. She could feel her resolve abating.
“What’s the matter, Patricia?” jeered Elinor after many minutes. “Feeling less daring? Or just acting like the spineless jellyfish I know you are?”
“Damn you, Elinor” Pat’s voice was quieter but as firm as ever. “Damn you to hell and for eternity, Elinor.”

Title: Re: Real CS Epilogue/Lesley's Nemesis #3
Post by Elinor on Nov 24th, 2003, 10:52pm
This time, Elinor’s mouth tightened as though her patience was waning fast.
Next, the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur. Arguably the tallest building(s) in the world and a masterpiece of Malaysian construction.
“Four hundred and fifty one metres above street level” smirked Elinor as Pat trembled. “What do you think of the view?”
A tinge of green tainted Pat’s features as she fought to control herself. She knew that she was fighting a losing battle. So did Elinor. As if to bolster her advantage, the wall became a medley of camera angles and views from tall buildings and tourist attractions around the world – swooping, diving, soaring, lunging, pitching …. One minute she was in a helicopter, plunging into the Grand Canyon, the next a hot air balloon, swinging out of control above Ayres Rock or Uluru as it was now known. Pat knew it was only a matter of time before she gave way and she cursed herself for her perceived weakness. Still she held out.
The CBBers, on the other hand, were overawed by Pat’s willpower in the face of such torment. She was not to know it at that moment but each and every one of them was mentally pledging to face whatever Elinor planned for them with the same valour.
Finally, the images turned to England – the London Eye, the Post Office Tower, Parliament and Big Ben – a nightmarish rollercoaster ride across the Thames. It was over. Elinor had won.
Is there something you’d like to tell me, Patricia?” The voice was softer this time.
“Melbourne” Pat was finally able to falter, “They’re in Melbourne” before collapsing into a dead faint.

She came round almost immediately but drifted in and out of consciousness, as she was half-supported, half-dragged back into the group. Any number of willing hands pulled her out of Elinor’s sight and Emma_N tended to her with care.
Lesley stood stock-still near the door. Throughout the ordeal she had had to be restrained by Carolyn and Sue who held her back and urged her not to utter a word. “Don’t do it, Lesley” Sue had advised. “Let Pat end it when she’s ready. She won’t want you to intercede on her behalf. I know it’s difficult but it’s not your call.”
Lesley watched with eyes blazing as Elinor made to exit from the room. The figure turned at the door, as if aware of Lesley’s gaze and stepped towards her smiling triumphantly. Leaning forward she spoke softly so that only Lesley could hear.
“Your friend was spirited but she capitulated in the end. Hardly challenging but then that was scarcely to be expected, was it? Do you think she will appreciate your silence or will she question the way you found it so easy to stand by?”
Lesley attempted to ignore the taunts but they were hitting home as Elinor continued callously.
“I have a number of questions to put to you. I wonder, how best to ensure they are answered? Who should I choose next? Pat again? Or someone closer to you, perhaps?” The eyes flicked towards Rachael P. Granite-faced, Lesley made no reply but something in her expression must have given her away because Elinor nodded with a grim satisfaction before withdrawing.

I was thinking back to what Lesley put in the original, in the letter from the real EBD, and I thought we should all talk about the very early books, before Evil Ellie took over.

Pat, you have my sympathy. I hate heights with a passion, too!

Getting vicious, huh!  For your information, dearest Ellie, balloons and helicopters are no problem at all!  I've looked straight down from a hot air balloon and loved it!  Buildings on the other hand....!!!

I also make myself go up castle towers and other similar places - though I do only look straight out, and hold on very tight too.

You haven't won yet though!  Look at my signature - that hasn't changed, nor will it!!   :P :P

Lesley would also use more spaces! And the way the speech is written isnt Lesley. Myself, I'm wavering between the Rach(a)els and Jennie. Wasn't she the one who put the quote about smiling and being a villain? Rather telling, that one. Anyone fancy digging out more Richard III and King Lear?

Title: Re: Real CS Epilogue/Lesley's Nemesis #3
Post by Elinor on Nov 25th, 2003, 7:12am
Lisa_T had been watching Elinor carefully with furrowed brows. It seemed to her that the figure had an indeterminate ethereal quality to it and, she may have been mistaken, but had it stumbled as it left the room?  Re-playing this final scene in her mind, she tried to analyse what it meant.
“Eureka!”, she pounded her fist on the table. “I think I’ve got it” she announced to the room at large, “And I think that’s why KB and Vikki were stricken dumb because they’d cottoned on to it as well. Elinor is drawing her power from our feelings. She needs to provoke destructive feelings in us … hatred, despair, fear, pain … because in some bizarre, hideous way, it nourishes her. But, on the flip side, she has to use up a certain amount of energy to generate those feelings. Whatever she metes out to us leaves her depleted. That’s why she disappears … to … to re-energise.”
A number of the CBBers were struggling to conceal their scepticism.
“Oh come off it, Lisa, that’s a bit far-fetched” said Catherine.
“Oh, don’t you see? It was easy for her to conjure up a screen and to force Jennie in to living her nightmare. Jennie’s fear was overwhelming and Elinor got a quick hit. She didn’t have to do much to force a reaction from Jennie but she was able to feed on it, probably intensely. She leaves the room almost as soon as she’s done and that’s when she recharges or whatever it is she does …”
“Oh my God, you may be right!” Aletea was sickened.
“I know I am. She got a triple whammy through Jennie, Ray and Liss … short, sharp bouts of terror or pain, effortlessly produced … her perfect scenario. But Elinor bit off more than she could chew with Pat. She would have been expecting Pat to yield immediately but Pat, bless her, wouldn’t budge. Elinor must have been at her for an hour or two. Just think about the energy she must have used up to defeat Pat? I saw her when she left the room and she had reverted to a more shadowy state, just like when she first appeared. It took it out of her. She’ll be able to feed on Pat’s suffering, I don’t doubt it, but I don’t think it’ll be enough – for now at least, she’s been weakened!”

The penny finally dropped and the CBBers began to discuss it fast and furiously. Lisa banged on the table again.
“Keep it down, you idiots! I don’t think she’ll be back for some time, she’ll need to summon up her energies again but we mustn’t let her see us like this. We may have stumbled upon a critical vantage point and we need to discuss it one at a time ….”
“OK, I’ll start” jumped in Catherine. “I’m sorry for being cynical earlier, Lisa. It just seemed preposterous but I can see now that it makes some kind of warped sense. One thing though – if she gets her strength from our misfortune then won’t she just keep picking on us one by one?”
“Good point” murmured Chloe uneasily.
“Yes, I expect she will.” Lisa glanced round at them all. “Which means that we all need to be as strong and as brave as Pat” She threw a grin in Pat’s direction which was returned weakly. “Remember, Elinor is in a slightly weakened state and we need to keep her that way or better still, debilitate her further.”
“But how do we do that?” A small voice piped up plaintively from the back of the room.
Lisa turned to beam at Annie. “By making her work for it” she proclaimed confidently. “Every time Elinor singles one of us out, we do our best to copy Pat. We refuse to give in, we take it in on the chin and we basically force her to expend as much of her power as we can. Pat was goading her, did you notice? By answering back, provoking her to do more. A bit foolhardy, Pat, but it worked. I don’t say it will be easy but if we all use Pat as our role model and give it our best shot then we’ll begin to wear her down …”
“And then what?”
Lisa sighed. “I don’t know for sure but I know it will help. If Hilda and Nell are on the way and arrive when Elinor is below par, then perhaps we do have a chance … all of us.”

Annie - I think Elinor is posting at specific times to make it look like she could be from UK or Australia - also there's a slight lean towards Aussie places but that could be a double bluff so I still see the field as open.

I'm thinking Rachel or perhaps even Lisa_T - I agree the formatting etc is not like Lesley's and it reminds me most of those two. Definitely not me, Lisa, so you can take the (a) out of your Rach(a)els - I can definitely testify to not sneaking back to work in order to post at all hours of the day or night. I tend to be tucked up safely in bed when you lot are yibbling late at night!
Neither do I have that kind of imagination!  ::)

LOL! Pat, Elinor must respect you to make you so brave - after all your goading she could have turned you into a snivelling wreck!
(Unless you are Elinor, of course - we only have your word for it about Cromwell!!)

Talking of snivelling wrecks - I don't like the look of that veiled hint that I'm next ... although, don't worry, Lesley, I don't blame you!

True re the double-bluff but then I know where she lives, who her supervisors are, what texts in the library she uses (no I'm not stalking, just demonstrating the things that are valuable to her that would prevent her from lying (hopefully)!). Phew! Having just read through this entire drabble from the beginning I'm rather exhausted.
This is a very scary story and it's made even scarier by the fact that someone whose identity we do not know but who is probably among us is able to make anything happen to any of us. Every time someone mentions themselves or someone else being in the drabble, lo and behold their name appears! It makes perfect sense of course in RL but doesn't anyone else find it a trifle disconcerting?

Jennie, the eldest in the group, had a motherly approach and was very aware of the alarmed faces of the younger girls.
“Lisa!” she interrupted. “I suggest we fix it so those of us who are older shield the younger ones as much as possible. With any luck Hilda and co. are already on their way here and we won’t all be subjected to Elinor’s will.”
“Good idea, Jennie” replied Lisa and the younger members of the group visibly relaxed.
“What about KB and Vikki?”  Abi demanded.
“Yes, that’s a difficult one” Lisa walked over to her pals and crouched down in front of them. “I’m sorry guys. I think I’m right and that you had just worked it out when Elinor froze you. I’ve no idea how to break her spell but even if we could, I don’t think it would be sensible. It’s important that Elinor doesn’t know what we know. For now we need to keep it that way. I hope you both understand.”
She patted both women on the shoulder and returned to the group.
“So, is everyone in?”
A united, if muted round of applause told her everything she needed to know.

Only Lesley sat miserably to one side. Although cheered by Lisa_T’s revelations and insight, she was brooding on Elinor’s last words to her. Glancing across at Rachael P who was chatting animatedly with Elisabeth and Catherine_B, she sighed. Better than Lisa, she realised that Elinor was fuelled as much by vengeance as a need to build up her strength. Being witness to Elinor’s strictures of Pat had sapped much of her will and she felt drained, certain that she would be unable to watch more, and definitely not if it involved a close friend. Rachael caught her eye and came over laughing.
“Isn’t it fantastic news?” she cried. “Lisa’s pulled a blinder. I can’t believe we didn’t see it earlier. This is it – our way out!”
Lesley did her best to respond to Rachael’s enthusiasm but she was half-hearted in the extreme. Rachael was quick to pick up on her downcast mood.
“What is it, Lesley? We should be optimistic now …”
Lesley smiled wanly. Rachael dropped down next to her, becoming serious.
“I can guess,” she said, pulling her knees up to her chest and wrapping her arms round them. “Elinor’s main objective is to revenge her imprisonment: through you, through Hilda and anyone else that encompasses. That’s not lost on me, nor that Elinor will have clocked our friendship. She’ll know that the best way to punish you is to hurt those closest to you. I’m under no illusions, Lesley, I expect I’m next and there’s nothing you or I can do to change that. But what she can’t control is how we react. All of us older ones know that we could be next – I just know there’s a greater chance of it being me. And, I’ll just have to hope and pray that I can demonstrate the same level of courage as Pat …”
“You don’t understand,” muttered Lesley. “I gave you away. She looked across at you and she could tell by my face …”
“No!” Rachael interrupted swiftly. “You’re no Judas. Elinor knows we’re good mates. She’s just needling you so don’t rise to it. You mustn’t reproach yourself! If you do, she’ll feel your guilt and latch on to it.”
Lesley subsided.

Post by Elinor on Nov 25th, 2003, 8:55pm
In a undistinguished hotel on the outskirts of Banbury, a small taskforce was congregating. Hilda Annersley, Nell Wilson, Nancy Wilmot and Kathie Ferrars had arrived two hours previously and had made the most of the restaurant’s full English breakfast along with the other CBBers.  No one was particularly hungry but Hilda had insisted that they all keep up their strength. Introductions had been made and Xanthe, Chelsea, Katarzyna, Tassie_Ellen, NickiL, LulieCat and the rest were looking towards Hilda for leadership. Exchanging glances with Nell, Hilda stood up to address the team.
“Ladies,” she began, “Thank you all for coming and at such short notice. The Chalet School Board will, of course, reimburse your expenses and Madame has asked me to convey her own personal gratitude over your willingness to assist. I have convened this meeting to discuss an action plan to rescue those CBBers who we believe are trapped only a few miles from here. Unfortunately, we have very little information to go on, other than we lost communication with them within a few hours of their arrival and that we have every reason to believe that Elinor is behind their internment.”
Here she paused, not wishing to reveal the next bit personally, and looked across at Nell who rose to the occasion.
“We don’t know for sure but we also believe that the reason Elinor has imprisoned them, is not only as revenge for the part the CBB played in Miss Annersley’s release but also as a lure to recapture her. For those reasons we need to plan and act very, very carefully.”
“Most importantly,” resumed Miss Annersley, “I do not want anyone risking their own lives. Safety is paramount to this operation. I will consider it a failure if we have any serious injuries or fatalities.”
Some of the more reckless members of the group looked very conscious and squirmed uncomfortably.

The Heads resumed their seats and the meeting was opened to the floor.
“Please, Miss Annersley?” Chelsea’s hand was raised very properly as she made her request. “What … what exactly are we dealing with in Elinor? How could she have escaped from where Lesley left her?”
Again the Heads exchanged glances. In their discussions with Nancy and Kathie during the long haul flights from Australia, the four women had agreed that there should be no secrets. All discussions would be open so that everybody was fully aware of the possible dangers they could be facing.
“We don’t exactly know, Chelsea and that’s our main problem. Katherine and Rachael believed there was something odd about Lesley at the Gathering and it is possible that Elinor was operating under the guise of Lesley to gain access to the group. However, this is pure supposition because they didn’t have a chance to inform us of what actually happened immediately prior to communication being broken. We considered that very question for hours while we were travelling and we did not come to any conclusions, other than the force which is Elinor is pure evil. She is not human and there is no indication of humanity in her actions. There was a darkness in my dealings with her,” Hilda repressed a shudder with some effort, “that spoke of an evil not found in this world.”
A shadow seemed to fall momentarily across the room and each person shivered inwardly. No one needed to be told of the possible consequences should their mission fail.

Post by Elinor on Today at 7:18am
Xanthe was the next to speak, jumping impulsively to her feet.
“Miss Annersley, do we know how we’re going to get into the house?”
“I had rather intended to knock on the door”, replied Miss Annersley dryly, “After all, we’re expecting Elinor to be lying in wait for us.”
“Are you sure that’s wise?” The student blushed as she contradicted the Head. “What I mean is, it might help if we retain an element of surprise. I agree that Elinor will be anticipating us but she probably won’t know when. Given that we’ve lost all contact with them for the last two days, I guess we can assume that she’s locked all the exits and entrances but there may be more that she doesn’t know about … a cellar, a loft, the chimney even …”
“You may have a point, Xanthe”, Miss Annersley bestowed her with an encouraging smile. “Do any of you have local knowledge of the house or surrounding area?”
“I don’t think any of us do, none of us come from round here,” Xanthe deferred to her peers who all shook their heads, “But I did manage to do a bit of research on the net this morning.”
“Anything of interest?” Nell had pricked up her ears.
“Possibly”, Xanthe could barely restrain her excitement. “Look what I found,” and she pulled some papers out of her bag which she proceeded to spread across the table. “The village is very old, with the church dating back to the fourteenth century. Most of the houses in the centre are almost as long-standing and are all built close to the church. If you look at the plans and foundations here,” she pointed, “And here, it’s just possible that there’s some kind of underground network of passageways …”
“Where do they come out?”
“Well, that’s the gamble,” admitted Xanthe unwillingly, “The plans definitely show a route into the house but they aren’t detailed enough to show where and for all we know it could be a filled-in cellar or a blocked up fireplace.”
“But it’s a possibility!” Nell pored over the documents with curiosity. “It’s worth a shot, Hilda!” She looked up with a glint in her eye that Hilda had not seen since before the isolation of the Gathering. “I propose we send in an advance party of the smallest two, Xanthe and Kathie. If they can enter safely, they can alert the rest of us and we move quickly inside.”

“Then what?”, Kathy_S didn’t mean to detract but it had been a long journey from the mid-West of the United States and she had got no sleep at all on the plane. LulieCat gave her a dig, indicating that she should be quiet but Miss Annersley was sympathetic.
“It’s a fair question, Kathy and one that I can not answer. We shall have to play it by ear. If we can enter the house without attracting Elinor’s attention then we should have time to discuss the position with the others. They will have had ample opportunity to observe Elinor’s modus operandi,” she offered up a voiceless prayer for Lesley and her companions, “ and perhaps identify any weak spots. If Elinor is waiting for us then we can but remember that there is always safety in numbers.”
She spoke as reassuringly as she could and the CBBers were able to take some comfort from her calm exterior.
“Now then, it makes sense to wait until we have cover of dark which is some hours away. I am recommending we all try to get some rest before tonight.” Then, as she surveyed the mutinous faces before her, she revised her statement, “In fact, I insist! We shall be neither use nor ornament to anyone if we’re worn out and most of us have been travelling for the last twenty four hours. Come on, Nell, let’s set a good example!” She tucked her hand into Nell’s arms, turning to say to the rest, “We meet back here in eight hours.”

Rachael P does this fit your village, and is that info really available on the net or does someone know? Have you been telling anyone anything?

Ellie, this is wonderful, looking forward to tonights episode, and I've lots of computer time today and this evening to enjoy it. (yes, and to write advent drabbles!)

Hmmm, very interesting - I knew the church in the village was very old (and central but that's probably the same for most villages) but couldn't have told you which century  :-[
I checked on the net and she was right!
Am relieved to say there was no mention on the net of underground passageways and I certainly have no cellar although who knows what's under the stove in the fireplace?!

Am very relieved to see that action has moved away from the house and hoping wildly that Hilda & Co get there in the nick of time ... or preferably before!!

Hey, Ellie - is this a good time to mention that I have a horror of drowning in a vat of molten Cadbury's Dairy Milk  ;)  ;D

edited to add
Hey, look - I found my courage!!

One measly little post!  What a let down!  Ellie must be losing her touch, or losing touch with her Plot Animal!!  Or else she's deliberately keeping posts about the inside to a minimum - which I wouldn't put it past her!!!  Come on, don't be so lazy!!   :P :P

Isn't it interesting that at ten past one this morning Vikki said "Only six hours til Ellie's next posting" (or words to that effect. Then six hours and eight minutes later, the posting arrives! I thought Ellie normally posted a little later in the morning, about another hour and a half later usually.

And isn't it also interesting that under Vikki's avatar it says "looking innocent".

Just thought I would point that out.

Now I can get back to Advent Drabbling. It is SO much fun! (Psssssst! Carolyn! Who did we agree was next on the List?)

Chloe, judging by previous postings, we've had our lot until after 6.00pm tonight, UK time.  Posting during the day would probably indicate that she lived in the UK!!  I suspect that the times of her postings are carefully selected to give as little away as possible!

So do you think 'Ellie' is rationing posts then? Or could it be her plot bunny isn't co-operating - imagine what that plot bunny must be like! (And I thought mine was bad enough!)

I had a new theory about who it might be (my job is not terribly challenging). Entirely based on Ellies quote about revnge. I've just finished reading Lesley's epic (which is riveting I must say) and I think the people who would want revenge most are the people who the worst thing happened too so my vote goes to the cess pit victims. That was so gross. So that's KB, Lisa, Vikki and Esmerelda I think. Vikki has claimed she was out when Ellie posted. Out where? Somewhere with a computer?

The geographical mistake about Melbourne could easily be a cover-up. It could be a UK member getting information from someone in Australia.  I think you have a good case there, Alex!

Title: Re: Real CS Epilogue/Lesley's Nemesis #3
Post by Esmeralda on Today at 6:33pm
I may have been a cess pit victim, but it certainly isn't me!
For one thing, I can't write like this (wish I could), secondly, at 06.00 to 07.00 in the morning I'm either in bed, or at work.
And if we are looking for people who suffered most in the original, I think what happened to Catharine B. was far worse than having a dip in a cess pit after partaking of enough iffy chocolates to make me totally laid back about the whole thing!

I don't actually think it is any of those five; the style's not quite right.  Whoever it is must have time on their hands to be able to do their research so well.

Hope she posts more soon though as I am feeling very annoyed.  I bought a salmon en croute for supper (salmon in a creamy sauce inside puff pastry) and the filling exploded all over the oven!!  Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!

Post by Elinor on Today at 8:46pm
“What is it Hilda?” queried Nell as they ran lightly up the stairs towards their rooms.
“Nell, I haven’t had a wink of sleep since Katherine’s phone call which seems like a very long time ago. My mind is racing, my heart’s beating at a rate of knots and every time I close my eyes I can see Elinor’s face leering out of the darkness. I accept that I need chemical assistance. Now where are those pills that Daisy gave you when we left?"
Nell stared at her friend with renewed respect. “B … but how did you know?” she blustered.
Hilda fixed her with a penetrating gaze. “Really, Nell. I’ve been teaching for more than thirty years, over twenty of which I have been Headmistress. I possess twenty / twenty vision and whilst I may not have developed eyes in the back of my head, I am certainly capable of spotting the passing of notes, or even small parcels, particularly when the perpetrators are as clumsy as yourself and Daisy! Give me a little credit, do!”
Nell grinned, relieved to see that Hilda was contriving to retain her humour despite the gravity of the situation. She popped into her room to retrieve them but as she handed them over, she paused.
“Hilda, you’ll let me know if the nightmares return?”
Miss Annersley touched her arm lightly, “Of course, I will. I don’t expect any problems if I knock myself out with these and I suspect you will hear me if I’m proved wrong. You’re a good friend, Nell Wilson, thank you.”

Once inside her room, Hilda opened up the packet of pills and was taken aback to see that a small note had been tucked inside the packaging. It was from Daisy.

Dear Hilda,
If you’re reading this then either your bad dreams have recurred or you’re suffering from insomnia, probably because of that woman. The enclosed will help. They should knock you out for five or six hours and are guaranteed not to render you groggy when you awake. Go easy on the dosage though as they’re very powerful!
Auntie Madge and Jo know you too well. They reckon that you will be feeling the burden of responsibility for the staff with you as well as all those CBBers. Well, you’re not alone, Hilda. We wanted to let you know that we’re all thinking of you back in Melbourne and you are in our prayers every day. We have every confidence that you and Nell and the others have what it takes to overthrow Elinor.
God willing you will all be returned safely to us soon.
Take care of yourself and love from us all,
Daisy

Hilda experienced a warm glow as she read and re-read the note, ‘How kind of them’ she thought to herself. She took a couple of the pills and a small sip of water and then lay down on the bed, filling her mind with calm thoughts. She would do her best to relax now so that she was better prepared for whatever might unfold that night. For months, even the idea of Elinor had thrown her into a state of unholy terror but today, despite the underlying fear that had been constant for the past few days, she felt consumed by an inner peace. The presence of God was closer to her than ever before and she felt very certain that the next few hours would bring some kind of final resolution.

Post by Elinor on Today at 8:48pm
Nancy and Kathie followed their seniors from the room but rather than going straight to theirs, Nancy pulled Kathie into the lounge area and poured them both a cup of coffee. Kathie took a sip and pulled a face.
“It’s not as good as Jeanne’s is it?”
“No, I should have remembered that England is better for tea but never mind, it’ll do for now.”
“So what did you want, Nance?”
“To bend your ears, my love. What do you think of the Heads’ manner?”
“They seemed very confident to me”
“Exactly, but do we really have anything to be confident about?”
Kathie put down her cup with decision. “I admit that we don’t really know what we’re getting ourselves into but Hilda could hardly inspire belief from the rest of us if she didn’t display a certain amount of confidence herself.”
“This is different” Nancy was adamant. “Hilda and Nell, especially Hilda, have had extensive, personal experience of captivity at the hands of Elinor. I don’t believe even we know every detail of what went on but it was clearly unspeakable. How can they be so assured that will everything will work out now?”
“Perhaps they’re not, but they are both extremely professional people and remarkable leaders. Isn’t that the sign of a great leader? To inspire others however bad the forecast?”
“Yes, of course but there was something about them, Hilda especially, which I can’t quite put my finger on. An air of resignation or … or fatalism maybe?” Nancy was struggling to express herself. “And Nell seems more subdued than usual. It’s not glaring but she’s not her brisk, snappy self.”
“It’s hardly surprising, Nancy!” Kathie remonstrated with her friend. She was feeling frustrated that Nancy could not articulate her concerns. “Come on … bed! If we turn up bleary-eyed, we’ll be in trouble!”

Nell Wilson may not have been privy to this conversation but as she had knelt at the side of her bed praying for assistance in their hour of need, her thoughts had also turned, inevitably, to Hilda Annersley. Focusing on a final plea to Our Lady, she rose and moved to the only chair, positioning it so that she could view the beautiful English countryside stretching out from her window.  They had touched only briefly on the possibility of Hilda offering herself as an ultimate sacrifice and whilst they had been in Australia and in the plane, this had seemed like a very distant last resort. Here in England, only a few miles from Elinor herself, the prospect had become a very immediate and disturbing reality, despite the surface flippancy of their exchanges. Nell sighed despairingly. She loved Hilda with a depth born of years of friendship and support. Neither of them had close family and had naturally gravitated towards an easy companionship that, in time, had developed into something special and cherished by both women. Nell’s face clouded as she thought of a world without her best friend. Since arriving in England she had observed Hilda confronting her personal demons and had found herself standing on the sidelines, keen to be supportive but unable to participate in what was clearly a very private battle. It had become devastatingly clear to Nell that come what may, Hilda had decided she would not be found wanting if the final sacrifice was required. Having committed to the crusade, she was at peace with both herself and her faith. Now it was Nell who had to conceal her emotions and wordlessly allow Hilda to follow her destiny.
