Just a little for now.  I don't know how much more I can do today though.

Meanwhile Rachel, Joy and Susan were starting to settle in at the school.  Joy and Susan had had letters from their respective fathers telling them of their relationship, and the girls themselves had realised that there was probably a fourth brother to add to the mystery.  Rachel had said that her family had also come from Southern India in 1949, and confirmed that her father shared the same birthday.  This information had been sent home, and all four families were starting to get to know each other.

Knowing nothing of Len’s letter to Steve, Jo decided that she must make the best of things, and that it was time she had the new girls around for their traditional Saturday afternoon.  If it caused more speculation, well she would have to live with it.

Carolyn, I've warned Tim about your arrival!!  He's supposed to give you my love, but he may forget!  (I've only said that you're a member of the CBB, so don't be too alarmed!)

After Mittagessen, Rachel, Joy and Susan joined the rest of the new girls as they walked across the grounds to Freudesheim.  All three were highly excited and very curious, as they had heard a great deal about Mrs Maynard, and her long family.  All of them were naturally great fans of her books, and would be looking forward to meeting her for that reason alone.
“I wonder what she’s really like” asked Susan.
“Do you mean in looks or character?” asked Joy.
“Both I suppose.  Do we really look so much like her?”
“We’ll soon find out.  That’s her waiting at the door, isn’t it?”

Jo was indeed waiting for them, and feeling more nervous than she remembered feeling for a long time.  The girls she was most interested in were well to the end of the small procession, and she noticed that they were looking rather the same as she was feeling.  She managed to speak fairly normally as she welcomed them all to Freudesheim.
“Come along in and dump your coats in the hall.  I tell all the girls that they must treat Freudesheim as a home away from home.  The name means ‘happy home’, and I hope that is what it will become for all of you.”

Changed my mind, so here's a little bit more.

The girls were ushered into Jo’s Salon, and told to make themselves at home.  Jo disappeared into the kitchen to bring the tea things in, and everyone took the opportunity to have a good look round.  A large fireplace occupied one side of the room, filled at this time of year, by an arrangement of dried flowers in an enormous urn.  A mini grand piano stood to one sire, with family photographs displayed on its closed lid.  Jo, Susan and Rachel, who were already being described as the Triumvirate by their classmates, wandered over to have a look.  Most of the pictures were of Jo’s children, but one at the back showed two girls, dressed in the fashion of the 1930s.  One was in fact, rather more than a girl, being in her early 20s, and the younger seem d to be about 12.  The background showed a delightful chalet, with alpine mountains behind, that was quite obviously not the Bernese Oberland.  However, it was the faces of the two people that fascinated the three girls.  The elder had a mass of light coloured wavy hair.  It was difficult to see exactly what colour, as the photograph was naturally in black and white.  She had a charming smile, and looked very happy and jolly.  The younger girl had a more sallow complexion, a pointed chin, very dark eyes, and black hair, cut short with a fringe across her forehead.   Rachel looked from the photo to her two new friends.  “I don’t get this,” she said.   “That girl looks just like you tow!”
“Well, the other one looks like you.” retorted Susan.

I've stopped my real neices calling me Auntie!

“That ‘s my sister and myself,” said a voice behind them, and they swung round to see Jo Maynard standing behind them.   She continued in a quiet voice that could not be heard beyond their little group,  “It was taken the first term the Chalet School was open, and I was about 12 then.  The building behind us is the original school by the Tiernsee.  You two do look very like me, don’t you?  I think I know why, but I need to speak to your fathers before I say anything to you.  I know secrets are dreadful, when you know there is one, but don’t know what it is, but I’m afraid that you will have to put up with it for the time being.  I am trying to decide the best way to deal with things, but I promise you shall all know as soon as possible.  Now we mustn’t desert the other, must we.  Come along and have some tea.”

Realising that they would get nothing more out of their hostess, the three girls enjoyed a good English tea, and all the games that followed.  Talking the afternoon’s experiences over later, they all agreed that Mrs Maynard was good fun, and nothing like they expected a lady of her age to be.

Having seen the three girls at close quarters, Jo was totally convinced of their identity.  She discussed the situation with Jack that evening, after they had finished their evening meal.
“Jack, I’ve seen the girls today, you know.  They are so like me when we first went out to Austria that it’s uncanny.  Do you think I should write to their fathers?  I don’t want them to think that I’m forcing myself on them, but they must be wondering themselves.  And after today, I’m sure the girls will be writing home.  I left that photo of me and Madge on full view, you see.”

I have a family of friends and there is such a big gap between the youngest and the oldest that the eldest son's wife, and the eldest daughter were pregnant at the same time as the mother was with the youngest child and the son's wife had her daughter just before the MIL had hers. Making the youngest child younger than her neice. So it could happen.

Just borrowed the title for the night thanks to Vikki as i was feeling a little low and auntless!

I stopped calling my uncle 'Uncle' when I was about six - but I guess that's because my brothers (ten years older) did too, and I heard my parents referring to him as such and imitated them.

Now, I have no-one to call uncle or auntie... *sniffs*!

Auntie Pat, it sounds right though. How do you feel about it Pat, and will any of us have the nerve to use it in March!!

Willersly was wonderful, but I didn't have to nerve to introduce myself to Tim and I couldn't remember your daughter's name and didn't want to embarrass myself by standing at reception saying "Do any of you have a mother called Pat?" Love Tim's comments about taking photographs if the building caught fire, and he and the staff made us all very welcome. The food was wonderful as well, and the conference very thought provoking. Had a great time, and now found lots of drabbles to cathc up on.

This story is so good, I'm looking forward to more and more of it.

My youngest aunt (counts on fingers ... 61?) actually refers to herself as "Auntie M."  (For pun, v. Wizard of Oz.)

Welcome back, Carolyn!

Hopes Pat's return to work frees the plot bunnies from fear of falling plaster.

“Jo, you must do as you feel best, but since the whole business is coming out, I think you are right.  It would be best to contact them and suggest a meeting.  They may not wish to make contact, though, so be prepared.”

Jo wrote to the four brothers, at the addresses supplied by Hilda, and waited in some trepidation for the replies.  All four agreed to come out to Berne, as they would have a chance to visit their daughters at the same time.  On the day appointed, Jack and Jo set off in their car, with Jo almost shaking with nerves.  She found that the journey seemed to go by in a flash, and all too soon they were drawing up outside the hotel.  Leaving the car to be parked by the attendant, they walked into the hotel, and approached the Reception Desk.

OK, I'll be kind.  A little more before I go home.

Here they were directed to a private lounge where the four brothers were waiting.  By now, Jo was visibly shaking, and Jack put his arm around her and gave her a comforting hug.
“Bear up, love,” he said.  “Remember, they will be as nervous as you are.  After all, they have only recently discovered each other, and the fact that there are four of them, which must have been a tremendous shock.  Now they are going to meet the person who is probably their birth mother.  Wouldn’t you be a tad nervous?  I know full well that I would be.”
“Thanks, Jack.  You always have been a solid lump of comfort to me, haven’t you.  Right from that time in Austria.”

In the lounge, the four men were certainly showing signs of nerves too.  Jim and peter Markham were trying to hold some sort of conversation, but failing miserably.  Ed Johnson seemed to feel that his collar was a bit tight, for he kept running his fingers round it.  Nigel Masters, who had not met any of the others before arriving at the hotel, stood looking out of the window.  Suddenly there was a quick tap at the door, and two people came into the room.

Jo stopped dead and looked at the four men in front of her, as Jack closed the door gently behind them.  Just looking at them was enough.  These were her sons, that she had not seen for thirty-six years.

Jack drew Jo gently into the room, and deposited her in a chair.
“I think we need to introduce ourselves first of all,” he said.  “I’m Jack Maynard, and this is Jo.”
The others gave their names, and then everyone sat and looked at each other.  Jo glanced at Jack, and then spoke for the first time.
“I know that this is difficult for all of us, but I think the best way to start is to tell you what happened to me when I went to India to stay with my brother.  I would like you to remember that values have changed a lot in the last 36 years, and what happened to me was considered so shameful that it had to hushed up, whatever the circumstances.  I would have been considered a Fallen Woman, and completely shunned by society.”  Jo continued, telling the familiar story of her holiday and the consequences.  Her audience listened spellbound, nodding in understanding once or twice, and a murmur arose when Jo gave the date of birth.

Some of you don't deserve anything more!!

By the time she had finished speaking, Jo was virtually in tears, and only managed to control them with a great effort, a quick squeeze of her hand from Jack, and his murmured “Well done, love.”

There was a silence after she had finished, as the men came to terms with the story, and then Peter spoke.
“Thank you for telling us, Mrs Maynard.  It must have been extremely difficult for you.  I find myself appalled that you were treated in that way, though it does show how much times have changed.  The close society of India would probably have made everything very much worse.  I find it difficult to come to terms with my new enlarged family, I must confess, and as far as I am concerned, my mother is the person who brought me up.”
“Of course she is!” exclaimed Jo.  “I have no claim whatsoever on any of you – after all, I gave you up when you were born.  My concern is for the rumours that are going around, that may upset the girls.”
“We understand that, Mrs Maynard.  I’m sorry, I feel awkward calling you anything else.  Could you tell us how many brothers and sisters we have acquired, please.”
Jack looked around at the four men.  “Prepare for a bit of a shock,” he said.  “We have eleven children – six girls and five boys.  The three eldest are triplet girls, Len, Con and Margot.  Then there are three singleton boys, Stephen, Charles and Mike.  First twins – Felix and Felicity – come next.  Then Cecil, and lastly Second Twins – Geoff and Philippa.”

“Oh my God!  You are joking, aren’t you!” the words burst from Ed before he could stop them.  To his relief, the Maynards both laughed, Jo a little shakily it has to be said.
“Not at all, Johnson.  I should also tell you that our eldest son seems to be having problems coming to terms with the fact that he has four older brothers!”
The comment brought chuckles from the others, as they realised that they were not the only ones having to come to terms with changes.
“If you come up to the Platz to see your girls, you can meet Len, our eldest daughter, as she is staying with us for the moment.  There are two or three Pensions where you could stay, or we have room at our house.”  Jo was recovering her equilibrium now that the worst was over.
