More please Pat! Why on earth are you decorating at this time of the year? Unless you're using wrapping paper, of course!
*stops to contemplate an entire room covered with santa/ reindeers/ winnie the pooh in a sleigh*

Oh, whoever asked about James and Mary re a bowdlerised 'God Save the Queen' it may be Scottish history- I suppose Marie de Guise would have become 'Mary' over here..and I seem to remember James V did like the ladies..
It certainly isn't english history- unless its a ref to James II and his daughter Mary II (from William-and-Mary. Just think of Hilda's chairs)

What does a William and Mary chair look like, anyhow?!

Hooray! Clone free!

And I believe this is what is commonly meant by William and Mary chairs:

Pat, this is wonderful. I hope the wallpapering goes very quickly so we can have some more of this. Or perhaps you really need to get away from the wallpaper paste for a while. May I suggest adding to your drabble as a suitable alternative?

Pat, I've only just found this and it's wonderful ~ *joins the begs for more*

James and Mary could be James II and his second wife Mary of Modena

Title: Re: More Shocks for the CS ~ Part Two
Post by Lisa_T on Dec 22nd, 2003, 8:50pm
Duh *thumps head on wall* OF COURSE it could be. I forgot Mary of Modena- partly cos I first came across her in Jean Plaidy which always referred to her as Mary Beatrice of Modena....

But you'd really think I'd remember as I've been reading up on Sarah Churchill for fun lately and she was a lady in waiting to M of M when M was Duchess of York. Is everyone confused yet? I thought so.

*off to watch telly for a while and straighten my brain out*

Computer is in the room being papered!

Daughter (29!!) is now living at home again, currently in the smallest bedroom.  Back bedroom is bigger, and *had* to be redecorated before she could change.  We've been in the house since 1986, and never done it!!

Papering finished today.

Doing this between 2 parts of Test the Nation.

Just about finished pressie buying.

Hope to do some more story tomorrow.

Joey came to her senses to find her husband bending solicitously over her.
“Oh Jack!  Did they tell you the shock I’ve had?  There are two girls in school that look just like me at their age!  I think they might be my grandchildren, from the quads I told you about.  Jack. It’s all going to come out!”

“Joey darling, times have changed since then.  There is a different attitude to these things now.  I think you’ll find sympathy more than stigma if people do find out.”

Meanwhile, Rachel had been almost as shocked as Jo.  She had seen her at a distance, and immediately felt that she ought to know her.  As they came closer, she was astounded to see the strong resemblance to her father.  To her knowledge she had never met the lady in her life, and it seemed to her that the stranger was just as shocked as she was.  She entered the common room, and asked Margaret who it was.
“A woman with very dark hair, done up in plaits over her ears?  That’s Mrs Maynard, who lives nest door.  Her youngest daughter, Phil, is in the sixth.  Why?”
“She looks like my Dad!  Come to think of it, she looks like Joy and Susan - or rather, given their ages, they look like her.”
“Your right!  Why did I never see the resemblance myself?   It’s so obvious when it’s pointed out.”

Oh all right then!

Phil Maynard was walking towards the Prefects Room when she was accosted by Kirsty Blake, and young Middle.
“Phil, Miss Annersley would like to see you straight away.”

“Thanks, Kirsty.”  Phil turned and hurried towards the Annexe, hoping that she looked neat and tidy, and wondering what the Abbess could want with her.  The days of searching her conscience on such occasions had long gone, and she was merely curious.  She entered the study and made the regulation curtsy, reminiscent of the years the school spent in the Austrian Tyrol.   “You wanted to see me, Miss Annersley?”

“I have had a phone call from your home, my dear.  Your mother would like to have a few words with you out of the school environment.”
“Is everything all right?  No one’s hurt or anything, are they.”
“No one’s hurt, Phil.  As to why your parents wish to see you, you must wait until you reach home, of course.  I will excuse you all duties tonight, in case you need to spend longer at home than you anticipate.  Off you go, dear.”

Full of curiosity, Phil made her way to the Sixth form Splashery and changed into her outdoor shoes and coat, before making her way across the garden and through the gate in the hedge to her own home.

As she came nearer the doors into the Salon, she could see her parents sitting together near the great fireplace.  Her father’s arm was around her mother’s shoulders, and her mother looked as if she had been crying.  Becoming really concerned, Phil hurried into the room without bothering about changing her shoes, and crouched down in front of them.
“Mamma, what’s the matter?  Please tell me.  Papa?”
Joey raised her head, and looked at her daughter, as if memorising her every feature.  “Jack, let me tell her.  It’s my responsibility after all.  Phil, my darling, I’m going to tell you something that only four people know about.  Letters are in the post to the others. But you are still here, and I must tell you myself.

As you know, Robin and I went to India for nearly a year shortly after I left school.  At that time I was totally innocent and naive about what are now known as ‘the facts of life’.  Young girls were kept very sheltered in those days, and living in Austria as I did, I was more sheltered than most.  As you know, I have been very careful that all you girls know what is what, and now you are going to find out why.  I was hoping that the past would stay in the past, but things have happened this term that mean that I must tell you so that you are prepared for the speculation and possible scandal.  Phil, my love, have you seen the new girls this term?”

“Not all of them Mamma.   I have heard that there are two who look familiar to a number of people, though no one can put a finger on it.  I haven’t seen them myself as yet.”

“Phil, if you had seen them, you wouldn’t need to ask.  They look like me when I was their age, and I think I know why.  Now let me tell the whole thing without interruption, or I shan’t be able to tell you.  I’m so afraid that you will hate me after this.”

“I could never hate you Mamma!  Never!  Please tell me.  Did something happen while you were in India?”

“Yes, my darling.  Only Papa, Robin, Mollie and Dick know at the moment.  This is what happened.  On the boat, there was a Regiment going back to India after Furlough.  One of the officers was only a little older than I was, and we were on the same table at dinner the first night.  Naturally we talked together, and after Robin had gone to bed we sat on deck talking some more.  The second night of the voyage, he brought a bottle of wine on deck with us, and thinking back I probably drank most of it.  I wasn’t used to so much, Phil.  I know it’s no excuse, but I think you may be able to guess what happened.  I don’t remember clearly, but Rob says that I stumbled back to the cabin about 5.00 in the morning.”

“Oh Mamma!  Did you think I would hate you for something like that?”

“Hush my dear.  I haven’t finished.  You see, by the end of the voyage I realised that something had happened - or rather  something had not happened that should have!  As soon as I could I spoke to Mollie - she asked a few pertinent questions and guessed what it was.

Offers stacks of cake, ice cream, chocolate and coffee/tea/gin/sake if you will please update.

In the bleak midwinter
T,E,M, made moan
Chaletians did the ironing
no stories of their own.
They had all been eaten
In the great thread purge
Now they all were begging
Till writers got the the urge....

They were starved of drabbles
fed on many clones
Couldn't post responses
tales were not their own
Yet all the other readers
Wish and chant for more
To satisfy the needy
with the tales they're thirsting for.

Words come tumbling downwards
Keyboards clogged with mice
Paper lying scribbled on
Eaten by a vice.
In the bleak midwinter
A CBB sufficed
Must we lie prostrated
Asking twice

What Can I give them
Poor as I am
If I were a bunny, I could feed the lamb
If I were a sheepdog, I would do my part
Yet what I can, I give them
Give my Art.

I was expecting a baby.  I told you that once was enough, and I knew that from personal experience.  Dick and Mollie were bricks.  They found a nursing home that catered for people in my situation, and arranged for me to go there.  It was at another hill station where they didn’t know anyone.  Babies born there were taken from their mothers straight away, so that no bond was formed, and put up for adoption.  The problem was that I was expecting more than one child, so I had to go much sooner than most other girls.  If I hadn’t been able to write to Robin, I think I should have gone mad.  When the time came, Phil, I had four sons - the quads I’m always threatening.  I think that the three new girls are the daughters of three of them.  They would all have had to come back from India after the War, you see, when we gave the country its independence.”

Phil looked at the tears sliding down her mothers cheeks as she spoke, and the love and support on her fathers.

“You told Papa a long time ago, didn’t you Mamma?”

“Yes, of course.  When he asked me to marry him.  How could I hide a thing like that from my husband?  Can you forgive me?”

“Mamma, as you have said, you were a young and innocent girl.  That man took advantage of you.  There is nothing to forgive.”

It's a lovely stately home built for Richard Arwright in the late 1700s.  My son-in-law, Tim Rogers, is the manager there, and they have a house in the old stable block.  Take your swimming things, as the new pool is open.  You may also meet my daughter, Helen, as she sometimes works in the office cum coffee shop in the evening.  Hope you have a wonderful time.  Are you going for a conference?

I had heard about the pool, but not sure about letting people I know see what I look like in a swimming costume. Even if I can now claim to be a size smaller!

Yes, it is a conference, and I'm beginning to look forward to it, the only trouble is we have to have a twin room without en-suite as all the others were taken when we booked. I'm hoping the conference and the place itself will make up for that! Is the food any good?

Carolyn, you can't miss Tim - he's built on the large size!!  We didn't eat with the guests, but the food in generally good in Christian Guild Holiday hotels.  My parents met at Willersley in 1946, and Mum hadn't been back since.  She spent today there, so we took her round the house before we went up to Helen's place!  Steve and I met at the hotel they used to have just outside Dunoon, and Helen and Tim met at the one at Swanage!  BTW they used to be known as Methodist Guild Holidays.

The facilities shouldn't be too far away from your room - when I first went there, none of the rooms were en-suite!!

Considering it was Helen's laptop I was borrowing on Christmas Eve, and that the 2 CS hbs I got for Christmas were from them, I think they know about the CBB!!  perhaps i ought to warn Tim about Carolyn?!!

Wonder if Pat's daughter can be bribed to let me use her computer cos we go to in laws on NY Day and then on to willersly, so I'll be suffering withdrawal...

No, I'm not sure I'll even dare introduce myself.

Poor Joey burst into tears of relief, and Phil hugged her hard, horrified at her mothers reaction.  Jo had very rarely cried in front of her children, so that when she did they were hard pushed to deal with it.  Jack smiled at his youngest daughter over her mothers head.

“Thank you for that, Phil.  She has been so scared of telling you.  I know how hard it was for her to tell me, all those years ago.  She had never forgotten her first boys, and I think it has made it harder for her to relate to our sons.  I’m going to make us all a cup of English tea, now, since I think we all deserve it.  Auntie Hilda has said you may stay the night if necessary, and I think it would be a good idea, for both you and your mother.”

Over the next few days, Jo received phone calls from most of her scattered tribe, but nothing form Len, much to her dismay.  Margot had not replied either, but as she was somewhere in the wilds of Africa, this was to be expected.  Jo fretted, for all of them had tried to understand, and had offered her support, but Len was her eldest daughter, and she badly needed to hear from her.

A week went by, and she had still heard nothing.  She was looking very white, and had lost weight.  Hilda Annersley and Nell Wilson had by then been taken into her confidence, and had reacted well.  Speculation as to the reason why the new girls had not yet been to Freudesheim was running rife, but no one seemed to have made any unwanted connections so far.  Jo and Jack had decided to wait and see if any approach was made by the four men before doing anything themselves.

Jo was listlessly darning a pair of Jacks socks when the front door flew open with a bang.  Not even this roused Jo from her lethargy.  There was sounds of people moving around out in the hall, and then multiple footsteps ascending the stairs.  All of a sudden, the door to the Salon opened, and Jo flet a apir of loving arms encircling her.

“Did you think I had forsaken you, Mamma?”  Jo looked up into Len’s eyes and burst into tears.

“Oh dear, I seem to be doing too much of this lately,” she said.  “What are you doing here, Len?  Don’t you have a job, and what about your children?”

“The school has employed a supply teacher for me, and the kids are upstairs unpacking.  I thought you needed me here.  I’m sorry I haven’t written or phoned, but I needed to sort my own head out first, and then I decided that it would be far better to see you than try and talk over the phone.  I’m sorry if you’ve fretted, Mamma.”

The following morning Len and Joey found themselves alone in the dining room, everyone else having gone out for a walk.  Jo turned to her daughter.  “Have you heard anything from Steve, Len?  He hasn’t written or phoned since he got the letter.  None of the boys have heard from him, and I wondered if he had said anything to you?”

“Nothing, Mamma.  He may be having problems coming to terms with this - I did.  I wrote to Auntie Rob for advice, you know, and she told me something of what you went through at the time.  It helped me to appreciate what happened from your viewpoint, you know.  Steve won’t feel as able to write to her, being a boy.  I take it you wrote to Auntie Madge and Uncle Jem when you wrote to us.  Haven’t they heard from him either?”

“He seems to have fallen off the face of the earth.  Yes, of course I wrote to Madge, but they haven’t heard from him.  I suppose I’m lucky that all the rest of the family have rallied round and been so supportive.”

At that moment the rest of the family returned, carrying the mail bag.  Inside was the longed for letter in Steve’s distinctive writing.  Jo tore the envelope open and started to read the letter.  To Len’s horror, she saw her mother’s face go white, and the letter fall from suddenly nerveless fingers.  She sprang forward and helped her into a chair, waving the rest of her family from the room.
“Mamma, what is it?  What does he say?”
“Read it for yourself, Len.” Jo passed the letter across to her eldest daughter, and stared across the room, obviously too upset even for tears.

Len sat down and started to read.

Dear Mother

Thank you so much for the very interesting letter you sent me.  I suppose that all of us have received a similar one?  I also have to assume that you are not pulling our legs on this - after all you have been threatening to provide the family with quads for some years now.

I have to tell you that the news has hurt me very deeply.  I have always believed that you were far more fond of the girls in our family than you were of us boys, and this perhaps explains why.  Why did you never tell us?  Why did you let me grow up believing myself to be the eldest of the boys?  Now I find that not only do I have an elder brother, but I have four of them.

I find after due consideration that I cannot forgive the deceit that has been going on for the whole of my life.  Please do not try to contact me again, as I shall ignore any correspondence.  If in the future I find that I change my feelings, I shall no doubt write again.

Stephen

Len put the letter down onto the dining room table.  “Mamma, Steve is a fatuous ass.”

Jo looked up quickly, a reluctant smile flickering in her eyes.  “I’m glad Hilda didn’t hear that, Len.  What language!”

Len grinned across at her mother.  “It made you sit up and take notice, though, didn’t it?  It’s perfectly true, nevertheless.  The stupid man wants his head read.  How old does he think he is?  I had problems coming to terms with it myself, but not like him.  And Mamma, I prayed about it, just like Auntie Rob told me too - as I should have done anyway, if I hadn’t been so surprised.  Now get up and come into the Salon, and I’ll go to the kitchen and make a strong cup of tea.”

Jo rose wearily to her feet and moved across the hall to her pretty Salon like an old woman.  Len watched her with concern, and instead of heading straight for the kitchen, slipped into her father’s study and picked up the phone.  Her mother needed the support of her husband now.

I can understand why Steve finds it hard to come to terms with, after all his position with the boys was the same as Len's with the girls, but he is only going to make himself more unhappy if he persists in this attitude.

She was fortunate enough to find her father in his office at the San, and she swiftly brought him up to date.  He was able to get away immediately, and almost before the tea was ready, Jo found her husband’s loving arms around her.  Len slipped out of the room, and left her parents together, guessing that her presence was not needed.  The two elders hardly noticed her exit, as they were wrapped up in each other to the exclusion of virtually everything else.  Leaving her children to their own devises, she hurried up to her room and got out her writing case.  Taking a fresh sheet of paper, she sat for a while thinking, then putting pen to paper, she started to write.

Dear baby brother

You never fail to surprise me, but this time you have excelled yourself.  Mamma is suffering agonies over this, and you write her such a supportive letter!

I do have some understanding of how you feel.  After all, I grew up thinking myself the eldest.  I wrote to Auntie Rob, though, and spilled all my confusion out to her.  She helped so much Steve.  She told me how Mamma felt at the time, and what society would have done to her if she hadn’t kept it a secret.  She would have been totally ostracised, Steve.  Do you realise that?  That is why the boys were adopted.  Think of the strength she showed telling Papa, knowing that he would be justified in refusing to marry her.  Get down off your high horse, brother mine, and think of the rest of us.  We have to pull together through this.  Even in this day and age there will be some scandal, and I would like all Mamma’s children to stick together, even the unknown ones, if they want to.  I must confess that I’m curious about them, aren’t you?.   They are supposed to look very like Mamma.  I haven’t seen the girls yet, either.

Come on Steve.  You know that this is only making you more miserable, and making us all miserable too.  We all love you, and we do understand how you feel - even Mamma and Papa, though they would never admit it.

     Love and kisses

           Len

I think Steven's letter was an outburst of his emotions, not a considered reply, even though it did take some time to come. He is probably confused and lashing out at his mother as he sees her as the source of the confusion.

I could be wrong of course, he could just be a complete ****
