Title: Miss Annersley Interviews Post by Lesley on Dec 26th, 2003, 1:40pm *This is a mini drabble - a direct result of something Catherine B said on the Grizel in New Zealand thread - I just had to write it!* Miss Dene knocked on the Head’s door, a low voice bade her enter, “Oh, Miss Annersley, I’ve brought your visitor, Miss Barber,” The slender woman seated at the desk looked up with a smile and then stood with hand out-stretched, “Catherine, how lovely to see you, do come in and take a seat,” The two women shook hands and went to sit in the armchairs over by the fire, on a small table nearby was a tray with tea and cakes. Miss Annersley poured out the tea for both of them and offered the cakes. They sat companionably for a time, staring into the fire. Finally, the Head turned to her guest, “Catherine, I know you are wondering why I asked you to visit me?” Catherine nodded, a little shyly. “Well I felt I must speak to you about your recent story - ‘An Alternative Romance’, I believe it’s called?” At this Catherine flushed and started to stammer apologies, Miss Annersley raised her hand, “My dear, I wanted to tell you just how much I enjoyed the story, you took a potentially flammable subject and handled it with love, tact and true feeling. It was a pleasure to read.” “Oh, Miss Annersley, I’m so glad that you liked it!” Catherine was still flushed, but this time with pleasure. The Head continued, “I was particularly impressed as you wrote the story even while travelling all over the world, working. I believe the work you are doing is extremely important - helping the poorest people on this planet must give you so much satisfaction and I know that your own contribution is vitally important.” Miss Annersley laughed, a little shame-faced before continuing, “Even though I must confess that your descriptions of the work you actually perform, did leave me cold! Well, I’m no mathematician and the world would be exceptionally uninteresting if we all liked the same things!” She turned to face her guest, her blue-grey eyes glistening, “Catherine, do not ever think that your contribution, whether at work or in the field of literature, is unimportant or unnecessary.” |
