Title: Matey vs Miss Annersley
Post by Sioned on Jun 23rd, 2003, 7:16pm
Miss Annersley had called the staff, Matey and the domestic staff into the staffroom for a meeting.
"I'm getting very concerned." she started. "Some of the girls are getting very...well...plump. I think it's time for some modifications to be made to the menu. No more fatty food - from now on the girls eat plain food with lots of vegetables, and fruit for puddings."
Some of the women raised their eyebrows at this, but Matey jumped up onto her feet. "Absolutely preposterous." she said. "Growing girls need good food. I think it's a ridiculous idea."
"Nevertheless," replied Miss Annersley, I think you'll agree that the diet the girls follow is setting them up for bad health problems - and they are putting on weight, especially now it's winter and we don't have much chance for outdoor exercise."
Matey would not agree. She and the head argued their cases very politely but neither would give in. Finally, after a good ten minutes Miss Annersley pulled rank.
"As the head of this school I am insisting on the change. Please inform the cooks Karen," she added to that woman. Matey was furious; there was no way she was going to condone faddy eating. She was going to do something about this.

With a loud sniff, Matey exited the room with her head held high. She stormed down the corridor to her office, and picked up the phone, dialling the number for the San.

Back in the staff room, Miss Annersley had departed for her own quarters, while the kitchen staff had scuttled off to start planning their new menus. Nancy Wilmot raised her eyebrows at her friend Kathy Ferrars. "Do you think Hilda's scared the girls will turn out like me?" she asked. The staff burst into shrieks of laughter at her comment, and the tense atmosphere that had descended after Matron's departure vanished.

Meanwhile, Matey was grilling Jack Maynard about the new rule regarding food. To her fury, Jack was not supporting her. "It's a question of balance Gwynneth", he said. "I think Hilda's right, the girls need to cut down on the fatty foods, especially after passing some of the -er- larger specimens in the car the other day. On the other hand, the girls will need some fatty foods, but not every day."

After leaving the staffroom, Nancy returned to her room. There she had more time to consider what had been said without the noise of her colleagues to distract her. She had jokingly made comments about Hilda possibly worrying about the girls turning out like her, now she wondered if possibly this was true. As she turned these thoughts over in her mind Nancy grew angrier. "How dare she!" thought Nancy as she thought of Miss Annersley. If any sides were to be taken Nancy was going to be sure to support Matron in this.

That tea time the girls were supprised to see that their usual creamy cakes had been replaced by pieces of fruit and the milky coffee with instant coffee or lemonade.
With a bit of minor grumbing the girls settled down to eat bread and margerine-butter being deemed to fatty. They were just finishing when Matron and Miss Wilmot came in with large trays of creamy cakes for the girls to eat. They were delighted, perhaps the fruit was just an option, well it wasn't popular!

After that a war began to rage, The head and her prime supporter held out trays of fruit while Matron and Miss Wlmot held out plates of cream cake. The girls asumed that there were two options but most of them didn't worry about food. However, as the girls were queing the opposing sidesoffered snide remarks o each other which shocked and entertained the onlookers.

Things reache a head on a cold Thursday afternoon. Matron, unable to abide the site of the ripe kiwi fruits sitting on a platter, picked the creamiest cake from her own tray and threw it across the room, where it hit Miss Annersley square in the chest.

The startled girls looked on wondering what would happen next. Would their head remain her usual stately self, dignified as they had always known her to be or would she retaliate. There was silence in the large hall as everyone waited in anticipation.

The normaly calm headmistress grew steadily more red and angry, she cried, 'Oh you scoundral, you mutinous b***h! How dare you undermine my authority! If i don't want my girls to be FAT, then its my perogative! And...you...you...' said the angry head, walking dramatically towards miss wilson! '...Are you trying to start a FAT brigade or something?' questioned miss Annersley who was groing more hysterical.

Before Miss Annersley could completely lose her dignity, Madge Russell walked into the silent room. "Er, hello" she said. "I was visiting Joey and decided to come in for Kaffe und Kunchen and I couldn't find anyone in your room...". Her voice trailed off, then she make a dive for her retreating self-posession. "What's going on here?"

Both Matey and Miss Annersley started answering at the top of their voices.

"Enough" said Madge quietly. "I'll see you both in the staff room." (she thought it was a good idea to meet on neutral territory) And with that, she dismissed the school to their common rooms.

The staff didn't try to stop the gossip that was going on in the common rooms, because they were gossiping also. However the really interesting discussion was taking place in the staff room.

(Is it going to be a behind closed doors solution?)

Madge eyed the two women. "I'm not even going to ask for an explanation." she said quietly. But it seems to me that if the two most important people in this  school cannot agree, something has to be done." Madge thought for a moment. She could hardly demote either of them, but starting food fights and yelling across the dining room was hardly fitting behaviour for Chalet School mistresses. Finally she spoke. "As you know I am fully aware that both of you do an excellent job of running this school. However I've been worrying for some time that I do not know enough of what's going on. This...this...affair, is just the icing on the cake. I have therefore decided to return as co-headmistress. Miss Annersley, of course you will remain as an acting Head, and Matron, you will retain your current powers, but all future decisions must go through me. That is all."

Madge discussed the situation with Jem that evening, 'it's unbelievable!' she cried, 'the two most stable members of staff I've ever met, arguing like 3 year olds. What on earth can have come over them?'
Jem thought deeply for a moment, 'You know Madge I may have the answer. I was at a conference last month and dropped in on one of the fringe debates. These women may be suffering from 'the change'. the last said in dramatic tones.
Madge looked puzzled, 'what's the change'
Jem blushed deeply and mumbled something, on hearing this Madge suddenly roared with laughter.
'Oh Jem you can't be serious! Why it's more likely they've been replaced by aliens!

Jem cleared his throat, 'Well it's funny you should say that,'
he began.......

Madge wasn't quite sure if she had heard Jem quickly. Was she saying she was doing the right thing or the wrong thing. The beginning of his sentence had been slurred due to Jem's tiredness from overwork. The last few nights had kept him busy at the san to all hours. The smile he now cast his wife was enough to reassure her that whatever she thought she had heard he supported and loved her. With this Madge began to make preparations to return as Head to the Chalet School.

Meanwhile...Miss Annersley was in her room, and she was feeling more than a little furious. Firstly she was furious with herself. What on earth possessed her to behave like that in front of the girls? How could she look them in the eye when dealing out punishments? But on the other hand she didn't believe her behaviour meant she deserved to be demoted. Matron was keeping her job, and although Madge had said she would remain as a co head it just wasn't the same. Madge would be very much in charge. It was very frustrating. She let a little tear fall down her cheek before angrily brushing it away. What could she do though?

With a deep sigh Hilda pondered her options. She quickly realised that she would need more ideas and imagination than she had the capacity for herself. Joey's name suddenly came to mind and Hilda was about to phone her when she remembered that though Jo was fair she was still Madge's sister. Who else could she turn to though

'I know' she thought, 'there is one person I can turn to who will not judge me but only support me.' She slipped out of the School and walked to Welsen.
Nell Wilson was astonished to discover the stately Head of the school suddenly appearing at her door. She realised immeadiately that somethimg was seriously wrong - Hilda Annersley was almost in tears!
'Oh Nell what am I to do?' she cried after relating the whole sorry mess to her dearest friend.

Nell was having problems keeping a straight face despite her friends obvious distress, for the whole story seemed hilarious and she knew, in time, Hilda and matron would see it to. Nell however did see Hilda's dillema but considered there was very little eiher o them couolddo about it.

"Perhaps" she suggested calmly "You should welcome Madges arrival and support her in this move. Then in time she will leave you to run the Chalet School again. You need to apologise to Matron also and sort this out."

Hilda looked at Nell in surprise. This hadn't been what she had expected when she had come seeking help. Yet, the words of wisdom spoken cut through to her like nothing else had recently. Soon, she was agreeing that this is what she would do.

Miss Annersley rushed back to the school, determined to find Matron, but that woman seemed to have vanished....

Unbeknown to Miss Annersley, Matron had also decided to visit Nell Wilson at Welson. Matron had set out on the long route as Miss Annersley left Welsen to return to the school proper. Miss Wilson concealed a smile as Matron poured out the same story over a cup of tea and a plain biscuit. Miss Wilson offered Matron the same advice, and waved her off at the door. She knew there would be no major ructions in the school proper once Matron and Miss Annersley had solved their differences. She had found the whole situation ludicrous, although she dearly wished that she could have been present at the food fight.

"Middle age spread, Nell. There's no point denying it - we've all put on a pound or two since our hey-day in the Tyrol and it's time we confronted the truth. Jack tells me that the new "white man's disease" affects the heart. We may be on the verge of eradicating TB but heart attacks, blocked arteries and the like are the new scourge of the twentieth century. We're becoming progressively office-bound in our jobs and it's just not feasible to keep eating and snacking as though we're putting in hours of manual labour. All those coffees with "blankets of whipped cream"; Anna's delectable cakes, Kartoffeln coated in butter - they're ridden with fat. We've got to cut down, Nell. Everything in moderation!"
And with a flourish, Joey offered the plate of plain scones to her friend.
"No thanks, Joey" replied Nell, a slight edge to her usual warm tones. "I have my waistline to consider." Honestly, she thought to herself, how was anyone expected to eat such dry food without a couple of sthingyfuls of luscious blackcurrant jam?

"Joey cannot be enjoying these dry, tasteless scones anymore than I am, soon enough she'll cave and bring in the good stuff", thought Bill to herself.

What Bill didn't realise was that Joey had only half fallen in with her husband's wishes.  As long as there was anyone around to see her, Joey eat these simple dishes.  However, by herself, Joey was still enjoy the dripping, creamy cakes.  In fact, she had only just finished eating 3 such cakes momments before Bill arrived.  Joey, therefore, was happy to eat these plain scones now and had no intention of bringing out anyother eats.

She chuckled inwardly as she studied Bill's expression, which was more than a little put out. However, she hadn't banked on Bill's keen eyes (has she got good eyesight?? she has in this drabble), which spied a little pile of crumbs on the floor. "Aha!" cried Bill swooping down and picking some up in between her fingers. "Foiled Jo!"
"Ah well" said Jo airily, "I suppose someone would have found me out sooner or later!"
"Get me a bun" ordered Bill sitting back in her chair, "and don't skimp on the whipped cream."

Just then the front door was heard to slam shut.
"Nell, it's Jack! What are we to do with all these cream cakes?" asked Joey, panicking at the thought of her husband discovering her with the contraband.
"Quick, put them under this cushion," replied Miss Wilson, suiting the word with action by placing the plate under the cushion beside Jo on the sofa.
Seconds later Jack entered the room with Bruno bounding alongside him. At the sight of his 'Missus', the St. Bernard made a beeline for Joey, dislodging the crucial cushion in his enthusiasm.
"Joey! What are those cakes doing there?" demanded Jack, incredulous at the sight.

"I brought them," Nell announced, seeing the urgency in Joey's gaze. "Your ideas may be suitable for girls who are at a sensitive age, and are still growing, but I've lived on this diet for years, and I'm yet to see any ill-effects from it! I felt that a single cake couldn't harm Joey, and," this with an amused eye on the doctor, "I'm not sure that, if you could come down from your heights of pride, you wouldn't prefer one yourself!"

But before Jack could respond, Nell fell back onto the sofa, clutching at her chest...

(lol, KB!)
Jack rushed over to where Nell had collapsed, reaching for the stethoscope which he had neglected to remove on his way home from the San.
"Breathe deeply, Nell" he said, attempting to calm the wheezing mistress, who was coughing and gasping for air.
Joey watched the pair of them in alarm. Was one of her closest friend's suffering a heart attack due to excessive consumption of cream cakes?
"Should I call an ambulance?" she demanded.
"N...No!" spluttered Miss Wilson, fighting to clear her airway. "I'm perfectly f...fine - it's just a piece of c...cake gone down the wrong way. I'll be OK in a m..minute"
Jack pounded her on the back trying to dislodge the errant crumbs but to no avail. Dragging Miss Wilson to her feet and pushing her in front of him, he performed the Heimlich manoeuvre, causing a large mouthful of cake to pop out of that lady's mouth, landing smartly on Bruno's snout.
Nell slumped back on the sofa to recover, brushing more crumbs from her front.
"Dammit" she cried, "There's a splat of cream on my new silk blouse!"

"Let that be a lesson to you" Jack said sternly. For reply, Nell Wilson merely stuck her tongue out at him, causing Joey to lapse into helpless giggles. Jack frowned "Cream cakes should be consumed as a treat, not as part of an every day diet. That way you'll enjoy them more when you do have one" he said.
"Oh rot" Joey said, pushing him down onto the sofa. "Here, wrap yourself around that" pushing a cream cake into his hand, while pouring Nell a cup of tea. Jack stared at the cake, as if wrestling with himself. Finally, he started to eat it.

(Sorry, can't help this!)

In the meantime, Bruno, who had found cream cakes very much to his liking, came snuffling around for more. The cream on Nell's shirt was too much of a temptation and he began to enthusiastically lick it off. Jack was too much absorbed with his own cake to take any notice, so it was left to the two women to try to pull the large dog off.

*your wish is my command!*

Joey and Nell struggled to remove Bruno from Nell's blouse. "Why did you have to wear a white top Nell?" Joey panted. "You should know it goes see through when wet!"
"I didn't expect to get it wet, did I?" replied Nell the weather wise. "There's no rain predicted today, and in any case I have my coat. Get off me you silly dog!" she shrieked as Bruno tried to lick her face. At that moment the door bell pealed loudly, awaking Jack from his cream cake induced trance. Anna was heard in the hall exclaiming loudly, and then she flung the door open and said "It's Herr Docktor Jem!"
Jack strode over to the door and wrung Jem's hand "Hallo old chap, why didn't you let us know you were coming over?"
"Is Madge with you?" Joey interjected, heaving Bruno away from Nell at last.
"No, Madge is over at the school. She was going to invite Nell over for tea, but was told that she was here, so I volunteered to pop over and fetch her." His eyes lingered on Nell's tousled appearance and damp shirt. "Though I don't think she'll be too pleased to see your appearance. What on earth happened Nell?"
Nell Wilson was too mortified to reply, a steady flush crept up her cheeks, and she jumped up, preparing to flee for the bathroom, when Bruno bounded over again and knocked her flat on the floor.

It took the combined efforts of Jem and Jack to heave Bruno off Nell, while Joey helped Nell up, and led her from the room. "I'm so sorry" Joey said apologetically. "You know what Bruno's like, he just gets out of control".
"Well you should teach him better manners shouldn't you?" Nell snapped, her face burning. She was instantly contrite as she saw Joey's shocked face. "Oh, I'm sorry, I'm just so embarrassed".
Joey nodded as she ushered her into the bathroom. "I'll just fetch you some dry clothes, luckily there's not to much difference in our sizes."
After she had passed the clothes through the door to Nell, Joey returned to the sitting room to find Jem and Jack choking on their laughter. Bruno had been banished to his kennel. "Oh you are awful" stormed Joey as she swatted both her husband and her brother-in-law with the nearest cushion. "Poor Nell having Bruno attacking her, and all you two can do is laugh!"
Jem cleared his throat, but his lips were still twitching. "I don't think Nell quite planned on revealing her underwear to us though!"

I certainly didn't expect you to eat more unhealthily like you seem to have done, judging by the evidence those two are trying to hide! Madge was really quite concerned and we're now on a diet of mainly raw vegetables to try and counteract years of damage. After all, none of us is getting any younger."

All my life you've fussed over my health, denying me this and that, saying I must stay in bed, I must stay out of draughts, I must do this, can't do that. Well I've had enough Jem, it's my health, I can take responsibility for what I do, and if I want a cream cake, neither you or Jack will be able to stop me!"
Jem was stunned into silence for a moment. "Why you ungrateful brat", he declared. "You really don't deserve to have people worried about you. I'm telling you Joey, this research is really important, and says that you will -"
"I don't care WHAT it says Jem. I want you out of this house right now, and you can tell my sister that I won't be following her down the path of rabbit food." Joey flung open the salon door, and pointed Jem out. "And tell Madge I'm not entertaining tonight!" she yelled after him before slamming the door.
Nell sat looking shell shocked. She had never heard Joey lose her temper with her family before. When she had changed in the bathroom earlier, she had been sorely tempted to climb out of the window and run back to Welson. She wished she had done now, judging by the looks on Joey and Jack's faces...

Joey was verging on hysterics as she wildly waved the cream in Jack's face, sending great dollops of cream in an arc across the carpet. Jack calmly removed the cake and retreated to the kitchen to prepare a cup of coffee, carefully laced with a sedative. As he emerged from the room, Joey immediately grabbed the drink and downed it instantly. An uncomfortable thought crossed Jack's mind. Could Joey be suffering from a cream addiction? At this point, Jack began to prepare a nice hot cup of coffee, slipping something in as he stirred, but ensuring that he topped it with cream so that she would drink it without suspicion. As soon as it took effect, he decided, he would phone the San for an ambulance.

When Joey awoke she was confronted by a group of stern looking doctors, including her own husband and brother-in-law.  As she started to protest at her forced hospitalisation, Jack interupted her saying 'I'm sorry Jo but its for your own good, whilst you were asleep we ran some tests and well' he hesitated not sure how to break this to Joey 'your cholesterol is sky high for someone you age, if you don't combat this cream addition you are at a high risk of a heart attack, We are taking the necessary measures to make sure you never see cream again'

"Josephine Mary Maynard!" Jack thundered. Joey stopped wailing at once. "What?" she asked.
"Will you please take this seriously Joey? Not just for my sake, or the kids, but for once in your life will you pay attention to your own needs? You will probably die within a year unless we can cut the cream out of your diet."
"A year?" Joey whispered.
"A year" repeated Jem. "We're going to try you with different medicines to bring down your cholesterol and others to wean you off cream."
Joey looked flabbergasted. "How will this effect the school?" she asked.
"What do you mean?" asked Jack.
"Well, are their meals going to change?"
"Yes" siad Jem. "We're ensuring they will get similar food to you - minus the cream, so no sneaking off to the Chalet hoping to cadge a cream cake Josephine."
Joey stuck out her tongue at him.

But not Nancy Wilmot, please! - she's a healthy role model - she's meant to be quite tall and I'm sure I read in one of the later books that she was 10 stone 6lbs which I think is a perfectly reasonable weight! If she's plump,  it's in a curvaceous way!

What about Mademoiselle Lachenais, the doyenne of the staff room - she probably has lashings of cream with all her nectar-like coffee?

But how to escape and who to go to for shelter.  Joey knew that her greatest ally was Matey, the only problem was that everyone else knew this and had forbidden Matey from the San.  But how to contact Matey?....

Title: Re: Matey vs Miss Annersley

Well, as I see it, there are a couple of options ...
Matey seems to feature in the Drabbles as both "M" a secret agent and an acquaintance of Madame Pomfrey from Hogwarts so I guess she's either got a "Q"-style communicator hidden under her apron or she can summon a little wizardry to her assistance?
Joey has probably been sworn to secrecy about both but Matey will have made sure that "her heart's darling" knows how to contact her, whatever the emergency

Will that do you?  ;D

Matey with her inward sense of when something wasn't right, knew that her Jo needed her, but was unsure herself, how she would get to Jo.

But there was one person she could use Dr Entwistle, she knew he was desperate to marry Len and so would do anything to keep on the right side of Joey, also she knew he was partial to the odd cream cake himself.

"Cream cakes are delicious ..." murmered Reg still half asleep "but not half as nice as chocolate ... chocolate and Len ... Len and chocolate ... cream cakes and ...". With a crash the phonecall came to an abrupt halt as Reg dropped the phone and had fallen back to sleep.

Realising what had just happened, Matron decided to go to reg and shake him awake herself, and she did!
Soon after her monumental desicion she was standing over Reg,
'Young man, do you want to make Len Maynard, Len Entwistle?'
'Um, yes of course i do,' replied reg who was now fully awake from the shock.
'Right then, we must rescue Joey, that child needs her cream!' said Matron briskly pulling the confused doctor out of bed.
'But Matron, her arteries!' Reg excalimed
'Oh, you silly boy! She hasn't been standingon te ground without slippers you know, she's not going to die since when did a little cream hurt anyone,' replied the matron as if she wastalking to a silly child, after all she was very experienced, he knew that Joey might get ill from standing in a door way, or not wearing slippers, but she wouln't get ill from cream!

Just before Matey and Reg could pull off the cream-cake escapade, however, three slim figures entered the room in which Joey was confined, and barred the door behind them.

"Jo!" said the tallest lady firmly.  It was none other than Marie von und zu etc, who had been Games Prefect back in the days when Jo was such a beloved Head Girl.  The intervening years had treated her more kindly, however, and she was well under half of Jo's weight.  "It's time you listened to us.  For years, everyone has been shilly-shallying around you, pretending that having 11 children hasn't made you fat.  Don't you realise you're an obese lump?"

"My Jo!" began Simone tearfully, but was pushed aside by the once peace-making Frieda.

"Jo, we've felt so bad for you all these years.  No one wanted to tell you that Jack was repelled by your fatness and driven to having affairs with dozens of the school's mistresses..." ("What?!" gasped Jo) "... oh come off it, why do you think all those spinsters stayed around for so long?  But that's beside the point.  It was because we felt sorry for you that we conspired with Mary-Lou and the other girls to let you win that swimming race at the Tiernsee, back when the school came of age.  The wonder is you didn't realise."

"And Joey" added Simone, stylish as ever in her chic french outfit, "surely you still care about your appearance, cherie?"

Reg looked on the scene in dismay. In his confusion at being woken up so early it had imagined Jo to be larger than she was when considering her arteries now he stopped appalled as he considered her three old school friends. Each one was now so thin that he was sure that merely touching them would cause them to fall over. In contrast, Jo was the picture of good health, something that hadn't been said of her too often over the years. Reg considered the problem carefully and wished heartily that he had been left to sleep.

Despite Reg's good intentions Joey was feeling all the world was against her, she swung around at Reg and shouted

'A picture picture of good health, stop sucking up to me Reg I know you want to marry Len, so flirting with me won't help your case'

'Flirting' queried Reg looking bewildered 'I haven't flirted with you, I love Len'  as secretly, he worried about whether it was Joey who was flirting with him!

*gasp*!!!!!

Reg decided it was time to take action rather than dwell on possibilities for now. In an instant he had cleared the room of visitors sending the now bewildered Simone, Marie and Frieda from the room. Now there remained only Reg and Matron, and taking control Matron returned once more to the subject of cream cakes.

Title: Re: Matey vs Miss Annersley

'Now then young man,' began the matron, 'About this cream business, i am, as you know, a firm beleiver in feeding young adies properly, and these new fangled diets are not the way to go about it!' tiraded the matron in a fashion that was most out of character, she drew her chest up and continued,'In your quest for love Reg, i expect you to back me up!'
The 'young ma' was bewildered by these comments but said,
'Yes Matron, i am in love, you are close to to person with whome i long for, so i shall back you up!'
Giving Reg a quizical look the Matron headed back to her beloved school, where Joey was to be under her care.

"Jo ... Jo wake up I want you". Jo roused from what had been a very deep sleep wondering who could be wanting her at this hour. Finally she decided it must be one of the triplets and knowing her three it would be Margot seeking her out at this hour. Instead when she opened her eyes it was to see Hilda Annersley leaning over her. "Jo, please, we need to talk. I never thought things would get this far out of hand or that it would affect you in this way. Forgive me please."

Title: Re: Matey vs Miss Annersley

"Hilda?" said Joey groggily. "What time is it?"
"It's 8:00 and the bell for Fruhstuck will ring soon. I just had to come and make sure you were alright after...after everything..."

For almost the first time since they had met, Joey realised her good friend, who could always be relied on to be so calm and self-posessed, was distressed to the point of tears because of the terrible happenings of the previous night. "This wasn't your fault! The doctors told us to go on this stupid diet; maybe they're not as wise as we've always thought, if they can let something like this happen!"

Miss Annersley took a deep breath and replied with a queer, strained note in her usually beautiful voice, "But I decided to put their diet into effect! Because of this I surrendered my dignity and, more importantly, discipline in the school and nearly caused your death! No Joey!" as that young lady tried to interrupt her, "I must say this! We teach our girls to stand on their own feet, make their own decisions and argue rationally from cause to effect but I- I have set the worst example of all! I have become so accustomed to accepting every word the doctors say that I did not think for myself on this matter and was far to headstrong in implementing the plan. This morning I must apologise to the girls and then I must hand in my resignation- "

She got no further for at this juncture Joey interrupted and began to tell her in no uncertain terms just what she thought of this plan. "What rot!" Joey exclaimed, sitting up in bed as far as she could go. "We all make mistakes and there is no long term damage done. Besides which my illness is by no means your fault- Jack forced this diet on me, not you! And I, not you, disobeyed him when I could! So how it can be your fault is more than I can say! I've never heard such poppycock in all my life!"

Miss Annersley smiled faintly, "Your English, Joey! Where you pick up such expressions I can't think."

'Come on Hilda, lets go dwn to breaky!' said Jo, deliberatly using an English phrase Hilda hated.
'Oh, yu young scamp!' cried Hilda before linking arms with her younger friend and leaving the room.

As they walked out the door of the room, Hilda walked right into Matron! Before either of them could say a word Jo burst into a fit of giggles. The sound of Jo's laughter reached Matron like nothing else could. Though it would be hard to drag it from her Jo had always been one of Matron's darlings and to hear her happy after the events of recent days made Matron forget her own anger and feel sorry for her part in the cream cake affair.
