Title: Lily and Marie
Post by Ianswythe on Sep 17th, 2003, 8:49pm
This is a continuation of Anna's Story. I apologise if some bit of it are a bit explanatory but I it was the only way I could fill in thirteen years of history. I'll post as and when I can (unless it is so bad you all beg me to stop  :-X ) but I have two plot bunnies at the moment and I am trying to write both at once.

The cold December wind blew the fat flakes of snow in between the gravestones of the small cemetery. Lily Maynard shivered, huddling her coat closer round her as she reflected on what a miserable way it was to spend her thirteenth birthday. She watched with dispassionate eyes as her father performed the yearly ceremony of placing a wreath of holly and Christmas roses on the grave of her twin sister before beckoning her forward to lay down her own offering of a single Lily. Lily had hoped that with this year being her first as a full time boarder at the Chalet School that she would escape the annual marking of the birth and death of little Rose Anne but a bout of influenza had swept the school infecting the bulk of the staff and the majority of the pupils. As a result the school had decided to close early for Christmas and make up the time the following year. Lily had been one of the few to escape it but it accounted for her being the only Maynard offspring present today. Phil, now in her final year at the school and head girl to boot, had taken the flu badly. Her father had refused to allow her to leave her bed for few days yet. Len was pregnant with her sixth child so she too had been unable to attend. Work and study commitments accounted for the absence for the rest of the family so Lily found the task of mourning her sister’s departure somewhat more onerous than usual.
“It’s not even as if I ever knew her. I know she is my twin and I’m supposed to have some sort of magical bond with her but I just can’t pretend to grieve when I don’t feel it!” Lily thought rebelliously.
There was one thing to be thankful for this year, Jo herself had taken the flu and had only been allowed up the previous day, Lily knew that Jack would not allow his beloved wife to be out in this weather any longer than necessary so the ceremony would be mercifully short. Jack finished his short prayer and then gathering his wife and daughter to him he marched them quickly homewards.

Once home Lily rapidly removed her coat and boots before slipping off to the kitchen for hot chocolate and gossip with Mrs Williams.
“Willy, we’re home at last! May I have some chocolate please?” Lily asked as soon as she entered the warm kitchen. Mrs Williams turned a smile lighting up her sharp features as she saw the new teenager.
“Hello lovie, come over here by the fire and warm up. I don’t know what your parents are thinking of dragging you out on a day like this to stand at the graveside of a babe dead and gone these past thirteen years.” Mrs Williams sniffed self-righteously whilst Lily sighed happily at the obvious affiliation to her own feelings.
“I’m freezing, I shouldn’t wonder if I didn’t take this awful flu that everyone has had. I feel all achy!” Lily whined looking for more sympathy.
“We should get you tucked up in bed then. We don’t want you ill at Christmas and missing all the fun!” Mrs Williams said anxiously.
“Oh no Willy, I’ll be alright I’m sure and I want to have some fun on my birthday!” Lily said hurriedly, she had no intention of spending the day in bed. Mrs Williams fussed round her for few moments wrapping her in a blanket and putting cushions behind her before going to make some cocoa. Lily leant back happily in her chair; dear old Willie could always be relied on for sympathy and for taking her side in any issues. Mrs Williamson had been with the family since just after Lily’s birth, a widow who had come to the Gornetz Platz looking for work in a climate more beneficial to her health she had arrived just after the marriage of Jo’s previous maid Anna. Given the difficulty of getting domestic help and the still weakened state of Jo’s health following the accident and loss of Rose Jack had jumped at the chance of taking her into his household. Although the household had run smoothly since her arrival neither Jack nor Joey had been keen on the way the woman had shown such disinterest in the children except for Lily. Geoff and Phil for their part had taken an instant dislike to her, which they had not troubled to hide. They gave her a wide berth having learnt that she was quick to dish out a sharp slap to them if she perceived them as being unkind to her darling. It never occurred to them to tell their parents what was happening since they had been brought up in the strict school ethos of not carrying tales. Had either of their parents been aware of what was happening they would have certainly stopped it but Mrs Williams made sure they never found out. Jo was also beginning to suspect that Mrs Williams was gossiping in a manner that was both indiscrete and unsuitable to Lily. However, whenever Lily was questioned regarding some of her statements and questions she always denied Mrs Williams involvement, choosing instead to blame it on things the girls at school had said. Unable to prove anything and with help still being difficult to get Jo had had to content herself with requesting that Mrs Williams did not encourage Lily to hang around the kitchen when she was at home and that she was careful of what she said in front of her.

Jo entered the kitchen and frowned to see Lily ensconced in the armchair by the fire.
“Lily why don’t you go and see Len for a little while, I’m sure she will appreciate your company!” Jo spoke more sharply than she intended but the short while spent at the graveyard had left feeling emotionally drained. “Mrs Williams may we have some coffee in the Salle please,” she added before returning to the warm fire in the salle of Freudeshiem.
Lily got to her feet unwillingly and went to seek her sister Len in her own quarters. As more and more of Jo’s children had flown the nest Freudeshiem had become too big for the members of family remaining. The rapid expansion of Len’s own family had meant that they quickly outgrew their own small chalet so Jo and Jack had turned part of Freudeshiem into two self contained apartments. Len and Reg occupied one with their children and Jo’s own Rosalie to help, whilst Mike, his wife and child occupied the smaller one. Mike’s marriage had come as a shock to his parents when the deed was announced. Despite his earlier intentions of joining the navy Mike had ended up following his father into medicine, during the Christmas of his final year he had arrived home complete with a wife of two weeks. Seven months later a well-developed baby son was delivered to the couple and Mike had taken up the post of a junior doctor at the san. Lily could often hear the sound of the couple arguing at nights when she was in her bed and it was obvious that Joan found living so close to her in-laws a difficult business.

Lily knocked at the entrance to Len’s quarters and waited to be told to come in. Reg had insisted that if the two families were to live together happily that this simple courtesy must be obeyed on both sides and so far the arrangement had worked admirably. Upon being told to enter Lily let herself into the bedroom where Len was resting.
“Hello Lily, how nice of you to come and see me. How is Mamma?” Len asked anxiously, as she knew Jo found this particular day something of a trial.
“She’s fine,” Lily told her before going forward to receive a birthday kiss and the present Len was holding out to her.
“Thank you Len. Oh hello Joan, I didn’t see you there!” Lily said coolly to her sister in law. Joan flushed angrily but ignored the insult to add her own birthday greetings. Joan had disliked Lily ever since the time, when as a very new and young mother, Lily had pertly informed her that everyone knew that Mike had been trapped into marriage. This comment had been as a direct result of listening to Mrs Williams hold forth on the subject to the woman who came in to help with the laundry. Jo had been furious with her daughter and had promptly taken the decision to enrol Lily as a full time boarder the following term in order to get her away from Mrs Williams influence. Unfortunately, despite being made to apologise, the damage had been done and Joan had never forgiven her young sister-in-law for her comments. Len realising the tension between Lily and nineteen year old Joan kept up a merry stream of chatter regarding the latest doings of her five other children, seven year old twins Joseph and John, five year old Ellie, three year old James and eighteen month old Margaret. Joan however soon made her excuses and collecting her nine-month-old son Sam from Rosalie, she returned to her own apartment. Reg arrived home shortly afterward and Lily left whilst he was involved in greeting his wife and children.
“Good grief” thought Lily in disgust “what is it with my family and kids. Len is huge already and she still has four months to go!”
Arriving back in her own part of the house she was quickly caught by her mother and chased off to get into a clean frock for the afternoon tea guests before she could disappear into the kitchen again.

“Please Mamma, may I be excused to go and keep Phil company for a while?” Lily asked in her politest voice.
”That is a very kind thought dear, yes of course you may go,” Jo smiled at her youngest child before drawing her close for a kiss. Once released Lily said goodbye to the guests and walked decorously from the room. She would spend ten minutes with Phil then go and seek more interesting pursuits.
“More tea anyone?” Jo enquired of her assembled guests. The guests in question were Hilda Annersley, Nell Wilson and Nancy Wilmot all of whom had remained at the school during the holidays and would spend Christmas with the Maynards.
“No thank you Jo, those cakes were lovely.” Hilda, still head of the Chalet School although in title only these days, sounded slightly nervous. Nancy kept shooting her urgent little glances and even Bill looked uncomfortable.
“What on earth is the matter, the three of you are like cats on hot bricks?” Jo demanded.
Hilda cleared her throat, although Nancy had taken over all the administration work and would be declared head when Hilda retired in six months time she had declared herself unable to tackle Jo on the subject which needed to be brought up, and had begged Hilda to do it.
“Is it something to do with Lily? I noticed she wasn’t too keen on seeing the three of you today, no offence meant!” Jo added quickly. Truth to tell she had been expecting a chat with the head on the subject of her youngest daughter for some time.
“Jo you know Lily’s school career has been somewhat stormy since she entered the school proper a year and a half ago?” Hilda began, Jo nodded her agreement privately thinking that stormy was a very mild and somewhat kind way of describing Lily’s behaviour of the past eighteen months.
“We are aware that her friendship with Emily Carter does not help and indeed we have made many allowances for the behaviour of both girls.” Hilda continued.

Jo groaned slightly. Emily Carter had been a problem to the school ever since she had arrived there eighteen months ago. Emily’s own grandmother and mother had been old girls of the school. Her Father was Lord Carter and Emily herself rejoiced under the full title of Lady Emily Evadne Carter. Sadly her mother and grandmother had been killed in a car crash when Emily was only two years old. Her devastated father had left the rearing of his only daughter to an old nanny who placed an unfortunate importance on rank and title. Lady Emily had grown up to rule the nursery and household servants and had rapidly turned into a spoilt, precocious brat. The one thing her father insisted on however was that as soon as she was of age she would join her mother’s old school as that lady had wished. Emily had duly found herself despatched to the Chalet School. Once there she had made known her disgust at being thrust into a society of non titled girls and had proved to be an extremely wilful and stormy petrel. The one girl whose company she was prepared to cultivate was that of Lily Maynard. Jack Maynard had received a knighthood the previous year for his services to medicine. The new Sir and Lady Maynard had not been overly impressed with the new titles and neither had any of their children, but to the out and out snob Emily it made Lily infinitely better qualified to be her friend. Lily had been quite willing and the two had quickly bonded much to the schools dismay. Their first year at the school had involved running a campaign of terror amongst their classmates until all but the strongest willed were well and truly under their thumbs. During the Christmas term just past Lily and Emily had excelled themselves by taking a violent and unfounded dislike to a new teacher and proceeded to make her life miserable. Hilda and Nancy had only found this out a few days previously when the young woman had tried to hand in her notice. Hilda had refused to accept it and had promised to deal with the situation.
“You had better tell me the worst then!” Jo said despairingly.
“Well Jo it appears that Lily and Emily took a dislike to Miss Davidson the junior French mistress. They encouraged the most of the class and a few of the younger girls to deliberately lose marks and hand in poor work in a bid to try and discredit her as a teacher. Not content with that they took delight in hiding or damaging her personal items and playing particularly nasty practical jokes on her. Jo you know we don’t mind nice mischief but when girls are sticking pins into teachers clothing to try and hurt them then we must do something about it.” Hilda sounded grim.
Jo gasped, “I had no idea she could be so spiteful!”
Hilda exchanged a look with Nancy before she continued. Although Jo was strict with bad behaviour they had no idea how she would take this next part.
“Jo the problem is we can not allow girls to behave in this manner. Even Margot at her worst was never this bad and with her you could at least put it down to her suddenly losing her temper. With Lily it is more calculated. When Emily returned home we had to inform her father that unless her behaviour improved dramatically then we would be forced to ask him to remove her from the school!”
Jo paled as the full meaning of the words struck her.
“Oh Hilda! You don’t mean.. Jack!” this last cry was to her husband whom had entered the room at that point.
“Joey darling, what is it?” Jack hurried to her side.
“Jack, listen to what Hilda is saying,” Jo clutched at her husband for support.
Hilda took a deep breath and continued, “Jo, Jack I am very sorry but unless we see an improvement in Lily’s behaviour next term then there is no way we can keep her. It would not be fair to the other girls!”
“Don’t apologise Hilda, it is not your fault. Jo and I have long ago accepted that we made certain mistakes in the way we raised Margot. Although she has turned out to be a fine young woman we could have helped her more if we had made her take more responsibility for her actions rather than letting her blame her devil. We will not make that mistake again,” Jack said gravely.
Hilda relaxed visibly and Jo changed the subject to pleasanter topics for the rest of the visit.

That evening Lily was called to Jack’s study, she found both her parents awaiting her with grim expressions on their faces.
“Lily, we have had complaints of your behaviour from your headmistress. When you return to school next term if your behaviour does not improve dramatically then you will be expelled!” Jack saw no point in hiding the seriousness of the matter.
“Expelled! But that isn’t fair!” Lily raised angry green eyes to her Father. “What about Margot? She blackmailed someone and didn’t get expelled! They can’t expel me.”
Jo’s eyebrows shot up into her fringe and Jack rose to his feet, his face furious.
“Who told you about that?” his voice was dangerously quiet. The matter of Margot trying to blackmail a fellow pupil was something Jack had only told Jo about a few years ago when Margot had taken her final vows as a nun. It was not something that he had made common knowledge in the family.
“I said who told you!” Jack’s voice vibrated with rage and he towered over his daughter.
“I..I just overheard it, by accident,” Lily mumbled. Not for worlds would she have admitted to deliberately eavesdropping on a private conversation between her parents.
“Sit!” barked Jack, and Lily collapsed onto the seat in front of the desk. “You will understand this. If we have any more complaints of your behaviour then you will be removed from the school and we will get you tutors instead. That way we will be able to monitor your behaviour at all times! Now you will go to your bed and for the rest of the holidays you will not leave the house without our permission and you will not go into the kitchens. Now go!”
Lily fled before her Father’s anger tears of rage shining in her eyes. Slamming the door she threw herself onto her bed and gave way to her tears.

The rest of the holiday passed in a quiet fashion. Lily, although angry over the thought of expulsion, was too much in awe of her Father to do anything but obey him. The large family was all reunited for Christmas and Jo rejoiced in having ten of her twelve children at home. The two missing were Margot who of course was unable to leave her convent and Charles. Charles had followed his sister into the life of religious devotion and had entered a seminary; he would be ordained into the priesthood the following year. Finally the day to return to school came and with warnings from both parents ringing in her ears Lily returned to school.

Marie stood impatiently hoping from foot to foot as her mother plaited her long fair hair.
“Stand still my child, you have plenty of time to get to the station,” her mother admonished.
Tying the final bow securely Anna turned her daughter round to face and examined her appearance. Long fair pigtails reached to her waist and a pair of large brown eyes, so like her fathers, added a striking contrast. The gentian blue of the school uniform fitted the slender figure well and showed up her clear skin. She was indeed a daughter any mother could be proud of.
“Now my daughter I want you to work hard and make your papa proud of you, but we also want you to play well and make good friends.” Anna hugged her daughter to her before releasing the girl to go and make her goodbyes to her nine-year-old sister Sofia and seven-year-old brother Kurt. Then it was time for Anna and Georg to take their oldest daughter to the train station to meet the escort mistress. The Burnstein’s bakery and café had prospered greatly in latter years and there was now a branch in all the major Swiss cities. When the time had come for Marie to move on from the small local school there had been only one school in Anna’s opinion where her daughter could go. The Chalet School had seen all of her beloved Maynard girls through their schooling and so Anna had decided that Marie to would go. The previous week had seen Marie’s twin brother Friedel depart for school in Geneva and now it was Marie’s turn.

The train station was noisy, thriving mass of people and Marie wondered briefly how they would ever find the escort mistress. But there in the centre of the crowds a group of girls, all wearing blue and clutching cases and hockey sticks, stood quietly listening to a woman calling out their names. Anna approached with Marie at her side,
“Excuse me Fraulien!” she said to another woman who was herding girls into lines.
“Hello, I see you are for the Chalet School too!” the pretty young mistress said smiling, “what is your name?”
“Marie Burnstein” Marie answered readily.
“Well Marie say goodbye to your parents and then we must be on our way.”
Marie kissed her parent’s goodbye. Both Anna and Georg had suspiciously bright eyes as they hugged their daughter.
“ I’ll be alright Mamma and Papa. I will write to you soon,” she told them reassuringly and then watched them walk hurriedly away.
Marie turned back to the mistress, “which line do I join please?” she asked politely.
“I’ll just get someone to sheepdog you and she’ll keep you right,” said the mistress, then signalling out a girl with straight blond hair she called her over.
“Emily, Emily Carter come over here please. This is Marie Burnstein, look after her please!” and then spinning round the mistress left to to go and create havoc amongst a group of middles who were playing a game of tag.

I love it, too, but I did find a slightly Ianswytheism. Early in the first part, it says Joey didn't got to the cemetery, but later it says she was emotionally drained from being there.

It was Phil and Len who couldn't go. Jo had the flu but had been allowed to get up the day before and to go to the cemetry, but Jack didn't want her out too long.

Quote:
There was one thing to be thankful for this year, Jo herself had taken the flu and had only been allowed up the previous day, Lily knew that Jack would not allow his beloved wife to be out in this weather any longer than necessary so the ceremony would be mercifully short. Jack finished his short prayer and then gathering his wife and daughter to him he marched them quickly homewards.

I'm beginning to feel really sorry for Lily. Obviously her parents don't have much time for her, especially if Jo is forever mourning the lost twin, and not rejoicing in the one she managed to keep. I think that dragging people out in bitter winter weather for a ceremony such as that is really morbid. Yes, put flowers on the grave, but not a ceremony outside. Prayers in the chapel, yes.

I agree, Pat, I reallydo think that one can honour the dead without going too far, I put flowers on my Grandmother's grave, but prefer to think about her in the privacy of my own thoughts, feeling that it's better to remember her when she was alive.

Perhaps this is because it's the first child that the Maynards have ever lost that makes it so difficult for them to accept.

We go (as a family, if we can) to my mum's grave on the anniversary of her death (mid-Feb) and generally her birthday and Mother's Day (my grandmother is in the same plot, so we go see both).  We don't do a big thing, just put flowers and sometimes talk a bit.

Emily surveyed Marie coolly before she spoke to her,
“What did Miss Rodgers say your name was?” she asked finally.
“Marie Burstein” Marie told her; she was not impressed with this scrutiny and felt that the girl was very rude. Then for something else to say she added, “Did Miss Rodgers say your name was Emily?”
“What does your Father do?” Emily demanded completely ignoring Marie’s question.
“He is a baker and café owner here in Berne, “ Marie frowned at Emily’s rudeness.
“Well I’m Lady Emily to you and don’t forget it!” Emily told her in her most domineering voice, “Now come and get into the coach Marie.”
Marie raised her eyebrows at this and before she could stop herself snapped,” If we are being formal then it is Miss Burnstein to you!” and picking up her case she marched to one of the big coaches without looking to see if Emily came with her or not. A few girls who were standing near by giggled at Marie’s able and quick response, Emily was not a popular girl and they enjoyed seeing her being bested by new girl.
”Guess that told you!” a girl with freckles called to her.
Emily flushed a dark red but knew better than to respond. The few weeks away from her influence combined with the poor reports many of them had taken home had meant that her classmates were not so ready to accept her company and therefore there was no one to leap to her defence. Seeing nothing else for it Emily joined Marie in the coach but beyond ensuring that Marie had her case and umbrella correctly stowed away ignored her completely. Marie, being quite content to stare out of the window, did not care.

Finally the coaches arrived at the school and the girls poured out laughing and talking and quickly got into lines. A figure
of an elderly lady appeared at the door and an instant silence fell over them.
“Hurry up and come in girls, it is too cold to stand out there!” Miss Annersley low voice reached to the back of the lines easily and the girls marched forward into the hall. Emily began looking anxiously around as soon as she entered the building, then spying a figure she propelled Marie across the hall and flung her arms around a tall, golden brown haired girl.
“Lily, it is lovely to see you again!” she cried excitedly.
“Hello Emily,” Lily did not look too happy. “Who’s she?” she asked nodding at Marie.
“Just a new girl. Marie Burnstein.” Emily said in an off hand manner.
“I say Emily, you are to go and see the Abbess immediately!” Lily told her gloomily, “I don’t think you’ll like what she is going to say either!” she added.
Upon arriving at the school Lily had been summoned to see Miss Annersley. There she had been spoken to about her conduct of the previous terms and had been warned what would happen if her behaviour did not improve. Emily’s face fell; she could well imagine what the head was going to say to her.
“Here find a kid to look after her and then come and wait for me,” she said before speeding away.
Lily turned to Marie, “You’re Anna’s daughter” she said.
Marie nodded, annoyed at the casual use of her mother’s name.
“Yes your mum was our maid,” Lily added, then grabbing the arm of a girl said “Julie look after this new girl she is about your age,” she turned and walked away.

Pushing her way through the groups of girls still clustered in the hall Lily spied a familiar figure come through the door.
“Willy, what are you doing here?” she cried.
“Hello Lily, you forgot your slippers!” Mrs Williams handed over the bag containing the slippers.
“Why didn’t Mamma bring them?” Lily enquired, slightly hurt.
“She has a headache and is trying to sleep. Don’t look so worried; it is probably just a result of too much coffee,” Mrs Williams patted Lily’s shoulder.
“Willy you’ll never guess who has come to the school. Our old maids daughter is here now. Isn’t that something else?” Lily told her excitedly.
Mrs Williams sniffed, “These people get a bit of money and get ideas above their station. Hmph, it would have suited that would woman better to have been doing her job looking after your Mother instead of gallivanting off making a fool of herself with a man. If she had been where she was supposed to be then your Mother wouldn’t have fallen and you would have had your sister with you today! ” Then kissing Lily goodbye and completely unaware of the damage her words had done Mrs Williams returned to her own concerns.
Lily stood still thinking over what she had just heard. She had never thought of it before but it was true what Mrs Williams had just said. Had Anna been at home that day then Mamma would not have needed to go upstairs, in which case she would not have fallen and Rose would not have died. It was Marie’s mother who was to blame for the years of feeling as if she Lily was not enough for her parents and for years of visiting the grave of a lost sister she had never known. Rage burned up inside Lily and for the first time in her life she felt a longing for the sister she had lost. Rage quickly turned to hatred of Anna and her family and forgetting all her parents and Miss Annersley’s warnings she vowed to get revenge.

Marie quickly settled into the school. She was a clever girl with a gift for making friends and thanks to her Mother was able to speak English and French fluently. As a result she was put into the upper II, the same form as Lily much to Lily’s disgust. Lily had hoped to be moved into the lower third this term but the school authorities had decided it would be wiser to split her and Emily up as much as possible. With this in mind they had moved Emily, who at six months older than Lily was really too old for the second form, into lower third. Lily had smarted at this but given the poor report she had received could not have realistically expected anything else. The pair also found themselves condemned to sleeping in different dormitories, so their time together was limited to out of school hours only. Out of school however they made up for it. Lily had lost no time in telling Emily her imagined wrongs against Marie’s family and Emily had of course taken her side in the matter.
“It is ridiculous the daughter of a maid and a baker coming to this school. How can they expect us to learn manners when we have to mix with such common people? We need to show her that her sort don’t belong here!” Emily told Lily.
“I don’t see what we can do. If we get into trouble again we will be expelled. I don’t want to be the Maynard who gets expelled from the Chalet School. I also have Phil watching me like a hawk. She came down on me like a ton of bricks yesterday for my shoelace being untied!” Lily grumbled.
“As long as we don’t get caught we’ll be ok. Anyway we’ll be doing Marie a favour. She’ll be much happier in amongst her own sort!” Emily managed to sound virtuous as she said this.
“Well we’ll have to be careful. My class will hardly talk to me at the moment so we can’t look for help there!” Lily warned. The previous day Nancy Wilmot had read all the girls who had taken part in the persecution of Miss Davidson the riot act. By the end of it there wasn’t a girl left with dry eyes, there also wasn’t anyone willing to get too friendly with Lily again in a hurry!
“We don’t need them. I know what we can do,” Emily told her and putting their heads together Emily told Lily her plan.

The next day Marie found that things began to go strangely wrong for her. It began when she handed in her prep for geography. Marie had quickly completed the five questions they had been set in her usual neat fashion; she had then placed the book in her desk to await being handed in at the next lesson. Kathy Ferrars collected in the books and told the class to begin marking the major rivers into a map of Britain whilst she marked them. Silence reined for some time until she came to Marie’s book, Kathy tutted sharply and then called to Marie to come to her desk.
“What is the meaning of this?” Kathy demanded showing Marie the book.
Greatly wondering Marie looked at the book, the page she had so carefully written her answers on had been ripped half way across along with several other pages.
“I did not do that!” Marie stated simply looking Miss Ferrars directly in the eye.
Kathy looked at her closely, the girl seemed to be telling the truth but how then had the book come to be in that state. There had been occasions in the past when girls had deliberately spoiled another’s work, but these were rare especially so early in the term.
“Are you saying that someone else has done this?” the mistress asked.
“No I am saying that I did not do it. The book was not like this when I left it in my desk!” Marie spoke emphatically.
The class, who had been listening avidly to this exchange, gasped.
“Class!” Kathy rapped her pen on the desk and glared at her pupils. “Do any of you know anything about this?” she asked holding up Marie’s book.
“No Miss Ferrars,” the class chorused, although had Kathy’s eye been on Lily at that point she would have noticed that she alone said nothing.
“Very well, go back to work. Marie, I will give you the benefit of the doubt this time. Go to the stationary prefect at the end of the morning and ask her for a replacement book. I’m afraid you will have to redo this work this evening, as I cannot mark this. Do not let this happen again and in future be more careful of the way you speak to me!” Kathy sent the furious Marie back to her desk and continued with her marking but her mind was on what had just happened. The incident echoed what had happened to Miss Davidson last year at the hands of this class but surely Lily was not getting up to her old tricks after she had been warned she faced expulsion. Kathy could also see no reason why Lily would do such a thing to Marie, especially as Marie’s mother was well known to Jo. Putting the incident to the back of her mind Kathy turned her attention to drilling the class on the imports and exports of Britain.

Lily and Emily realised that if too many things happened to Marie then the mistresses would very quickly work out that someone else was behind it, therefore they were careful to spread their tricks out. The next incident happened a few days later during the domestic science class. The second form was given very simple lessons in the art of housekeeping and cooking, for this lesson they were making easy sponge cakes. Marie was a talented cook having watched her Father in his bakery for years, making a sponge cake was no problem to her. She mixed her ingredients together quickly and put the mixture into a tin and then into the oven. Being one of the first to finish she had the oven to herself, checking the temperature carefully she then went to help one of her classmates Susan who was getting into difficulties. The domestic science mistress, Miss Henshaw smiled her approval at Marie and carried on helping other girls. Lily seeing everyone occupied and on the pretence of going to weigh her butter walked past the oven and turned the temperature up as high as it would go. For some ten minutes the class proceeded quietly as more girls began to put their cakes in the oven. A smell of burning began to creep into the room and finally Miss Henshaw noticed it.
“Girls, what is burning?” she called. Marie looked toward her oven, and then dashing to it she pulled open the door allowing black smoke to fill the room.
“Marie! What on earth did you think you were playing at? You had that temperature up at 250 when it should have been 190. I would have expected you of all people to have known better!” Miss Henshaw was furious.
“But I didn’t” Marie began.
“Enough!” the mistress snapped. “I don’t want any excuses. Clean up that mess immediately. You have completely wasted those ingredients through sheer carelessness. You will write out the recipe five times tonight and hand it to me tomorrow, maybe that will teach you to be more careful!” Miss Henshaw had a hot temper and Marie began to clear up the mess.
“Somebody has it in for me” she thought to herself, “but whom?”
Casting a quick glance round the room she saw everyone getting on with their work carefully and quietly. Everyone except Lily Maynard, who was watching her with a queer mixture of triumph and hate on her face.
“Oh well that takes care of the whom! Now the question is why and what can I do about it!” Marie thought to herself.

When I was little, a friend of mine was arguing with her brother.  Her dad threatened to knock their heads together if they didn't stop.  Being kids they didn't.  He grabbed them both by the scruff of their necks and banged their heads together!!!  They stopped arguing after that.  He is also the man who carried out his threat to drop them off at the side of the highway if they didn't stop whining during a long car trip.

As soon as the bell for the end of morning school went Marie made a beeline for Lily.
“Lily may I talk with you for a moment?” she asked.
“You can talk all you like, I’m not saying I’ll listen!” Lily told her.
Marie gritted her teeth but went straight to the point, “why did you turn my oven up?”
“What a cheek!” Emily, by Lily’s side as always, burst out. “Hear this everyone. The new girl is blaming Lily for burning her cake!”
The girls who had been happily amusing themselves in the few minutes left before mitagessen all stopped and looked at Lily and Marie.
“How dare you accuse me of turning up your oven! What proof have you got to say it was me?” Lily demanded.
Here Marie was stumped, she had no proof but she knew that it was Lily who had done it. Before Marie could reply the rest of the class decided to join in.
“Well it is just like what happened to Miss Davidson last term, and we all know who was to blame for that!” Julie Sinclair said staring pointedly at Lily and Emily.
“You can’t blame them for somebody’s carelessness just because of that!” Clare Gordon, a firm ally of Lilly’s the term before, put her oar in.
Just as things were starting to get heated the bell for mitagessen rang, following the row at the start of term none of them dared be late. They got into line quietly and marched into the spiessalle but there was a good deed of glaring between those who believed Lilly and those who were taking Marie’s side. As they entered the Spiessalle Lily, who had managed to get in behind Marie, gave her a violent push. Marie cannoned forward into the back Polly Winterton, relation and ally to Lily.
“Oh, you pushed me you rotten pig!” Polly squealed.
“What is going on here?” Phil Maynard was beside them in an instant.
“She pushed me!” Polly said glaring at Marie.
“I did not, someone pushed me first!” Marie returned the glare.
“Enough!” the head girls voice had ice in it. “ The pair of you will see me in my study at the end of school. Now go to your seats and behave!” and spinning round on her heel she stalked back to her own seat where she proceeded to keep the two sinners under close watch for the duration of the meal.

By the time afternoon school had finished the upper II were clearly split into three factions. Those who had held out against Lilly the term before were clearly taking Marie’s part in the row. The more volatile of the girls who had joined in with baiting Miss Davidson with a vim had renewed their affiliation to Lily and Emily, whilst a few who had been well warned by their parents of their fates should there be any more bad reports brought home decided wisely to keep out of it. Polly and Marie had duly reported to Phil and had been warned about pushing and name calling before being set some repition by way of punishment. Marie groaned inwardly when she thought about how much of her prep time must now be given over to Miss Henshaw’s and now Phil’s work. Prep was done in complete silence that night without any of the usual face pulling and silent pleas to borrow rubbers and rulers. Once the prefect had left the room Marie showed her workbooks to her supporters and they agreed that there were no tear, marks or other problems to bring the wrath of the teachers down on her head. Unfortunately lily and Emily were too wise to play the same trick twice. The following day Marie felt the full force of Matron’s tongue after Lily thoroughly stirred up the contents of her drawers. Condemned to hemming dusters during the Saturday nights dancing Marie’s temper finally snapped. Whatever Lilly’s problem was with her she was not going to get away with it. Marie was going to fight back!

Marie’s retaliation began the next day during the art lesson. Lily Maynard was the only Maynard who showed talent in the art of drawing, Her sketching showed amazing promise for a girl of her age and she was capable of producing some very accurate and sometimes very cruel caricatures. Her mother was understandably very proud of her gift, all the more so given her own renowned lack of artistic ability. For Christmas Lily had been given a superb set of coloured drawing pencils of which she was extremely proud. She took great care of these pencils keeping them sharp and being sure not to drop them and break up the leads: she was understandably angry when she opened the case during the lesson to discover the point of each pencil had been snapped off. Casting a baleful glare in Marie’s direction Lily carried the case out to the pencil sharpener and proceeded to sharpen the pencils.
“Lily what on earth are you doing for this length of time?” the art mistress asked irritably.
“I’m sharpening my pencils Miss” Lily replied.
“Well hurry up, you should have made sure that was done before you arrived here! Really you don’t deserve those fine pencils if you won’t look after them!” Miss Yolland said shortly.
Lily growled under her breath at this but wisely said nothing. On going back to her desk however she contrived to walk past Marie and jolt her desk causing her to badly smudge the line she had been drawing. Marie merely smiled complacently at her and started to rub out the spoilt line. When Lily returned to her desk she soon discovered the reason for Marie’s complacency; opening her sketchpad to finally begin her drawing she found that not a single blank page remained. Lily bit her lip in consternation; the pad had still had a dozen pages left when she last used it. Not wishing to call the art mistresses attention to her again she hissed across to her neighbour, “Lend me a sheet of drawing paper please.”
Sadly for her Miss Yolland heard the whispering and turned promptly to its source.
“Lily what is the matter now?” she demanded.
Lily turned red, “ I was just asking to borrow some paper,” she mumbled.
“How dare you come to my class so badly prepared!” Miss Yolland was suffering from a bad headache and was in no mood to be lenient, “Moira give her a sheet for now please. Lily you will spend Saturday afternoon washing out the paint jars instead doing games. Maybe that will help you to be better prepared in future!” with which sarcasm the art mistress turned back to helping Anne put in her lines for the still life with something resembling scale. Lily took the proffered paper and started drawing in silence but inwardly she was fuming, Marie was going to suffer for this!

Sorry this has taken so long but I couldn't get onto the computer yesterday. :-/

The lesson continued without any further incidents. Just as the girls were putting in the final details to their sketches a message arrived for Miss Yolland to go to the office.
“Finish up now girls and put your work and pencils away neatly please,” she called before leaving.
As soon as the door closed behind the teacher the two groups gathered around their respective champions.
“That was a rotten thing to do Marie Burnstein!” Moira said hotly.
“It is no worse than what Lily has done to Marie!” Julie pointed out.
Lily stood up her face white, “It is her mother who was responsible for my twin sister not being here today so don’t you tell me what is worse Julie Sinclair!” she screamed. Then flinging her case of pencils at Marie she ran from the room.
“What on earth?” Julie said.
“How is my Mamma responsible for the loss of her twin sister? I don’t understand!” Marie did not know what Lily had meant.
All eyes turned to Polly Winterton.
“Don’t look at me. All I know is that Lily and her twin Rose were born after Auntie Jo had an accident and that Rose didn’t survive.” Polly shrugged her shoulders, “I’d better go and see if she is alright” she added before leaving to find Lily.
The girls tidied up the art room quietly then left to seek out their morning biscuits and lemonade. Lily was already in the common room and had seemingly recovered from her outburst but as one her satellites all avoided questioning her about it.

Title: Re: Lily and Marie
Post by Ianswythe on Sep 22nd, 2003, 11:34am
During the next few weeks it became obvious that war had been declared between Lily and Marie. When Marie found all the buttons missing from her blazer one day she took the scolding from matron silently and then promptly went and smeared Lily’s outdoor boots with mud. Scarcely a day went by without one or the other having some trick played on them. Salt found its way into toothpaste, library books went missing and once Lily found every workbook, library book, pen and pencil she owned had been put into lost property. Since the two girls were careful about when these tricks were carried out they managed to escape the notice of the staff. Lily was careful to behave during class time and the school authorities and Jo began to believe that she had turned over a new leaf. It did not escape their form mistresses, Miss Charlesworth, notice that there was an atmosphere in the class but since the thaw had begun some week before the girls had been unable to get out for the long walks they were accustomed to and she put it down to a bad case of the fidgets. Nonetheless she still raised the subject in the staff room one evening.
“So is it just upper II who are all restless or is everyone suffering at the moment?” she enquired gaily.
“Oh my little demons can scarcely sit still for more than five minutes at a time. I had to threaten to tie them all to their chairs yesterday!” Miss Moore told her grimly. “What are you lot up to?”
“There is a definite coolness between Lily Maynard and her little friends and Marie Burnstein and the mob she has palled up with.” Miss Charlesworth told her.
“Is Lily being a nuisance again?” Nancy Wilmot decided to take an interest in her junior’s conversation.
“Not really. I don’t think she and Marie get on together but I can’t say that they are acting up in class and you know we don’t like to interfere in their personal relationships if we can help it!” Miss Charlesworth explained.
“You know I really don’t know where Lily gets her wickedness. All of Joey’s other girls have been delightful girls,” Kathy Ferrars mused.
“I don’t know, Margot was a little monkey when her temper was roused. But I admit that Lily so far has not shown the charm of the other girls.” Nancy said.
“If you ask me I think Lily feels neglected!” a timid voice from the corner put in. Miss Davidson blushed as all eyes turned to look at her.
“What on earth do you mean?” Kathy demanded, “You don’t honestly believe that Jo and Jack neglect their children!”
Miss Davidson went redder but held her ground. As the newest and youngest member of staff she knew she was treading on thin ice by daring to criticise how Mrs Maynard brought up her children but during her teaching degree she had studied child psychology and she could see things that the older members of staff couldn’t.
Taking a deep breath Julie Davidson tried to explain what she meant.
“Look Lily nearly made me resign last term because she made my life such hell but I can’t help but feel sorry for her. Jo is an excellent mother but she needs to stop making Lily feel as if she is only half a person because her twin died.”
At once an outcry rose from the members of staff who had known Jo for a number of years but a surprising voice quietened them.

Post by Ianswythe on Sep 22nd, 2003, 11:36am
“I think Julie is right actually!” all eyes turned to Hilda Annersley who had come in quietly and had been listening to Julie’s speech. “I thought I would join you for coffee” she added.
Nancy made haste to pull up a chair and pour some coffee for her head, “what do you mean?” she asked as she handed over the cup.
“Jo still thinks of Lily as a twin and she expects Lily to feel the same, but she forgets that not only did Lily never really know her sister but that she is a thirteen year old child and does not think about these things in the same way as an adult. Jo is still grieving very deeply for her child and for the loss of her chance to have other children. I think she sometimes forgets that she kept one child as well as losing one.” Hilda said candidly.
Nancy turned horrified eyes onto Hilda, she had truth to tell always somewhat idolised Joey and she found the thought that her idol was less than perfect hard to take!
“So you think that Joey neglects Lily!” for the life of her Nancy could not keep the disappointment out of her voice.
“No I don’t think Jo and Jack neglect Lily. I am the first to say that they are excellent parents but equally even they would be the first to admit they are by no means infallible. But equally Lily is of a completely different generation to the triplets and the old fashioned parenting that brought them up so successfully may not work so well for a modern day child!” Hilda looked into Nancy’s reproachful eyes and began to wish that she had not said anything.
“Jo let Felicity go off and take up an acting career when she wanted to, an awful lot of parents would have refused to allow it. You can’t say she is old fashioned.” Nancy pointed out.
Hilda suppressed a smile as she thought of the scene, which she alone had been privy to after Felicity, who had grown too tall to take up ballet, had announced her chosen career. Jo had talked herself hoarse trying to persuade her daughter to find a more dignified choice of career but Felicity had merely informed her that come the following Summer she would be leaving to take up a place with the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Jo had eventually capitulated and Felicity had duly attended the academy. This had all taken place several years ago and she was now, to the delight of her proud parents, touring with the Royal Shakespeare Company and was earning herself a reputation as a talented and able actress.

“Nancy I am not saying that Jo is a bad mother, I am just trying to point out that times have changed and that now girls are wanting independence and dances with boys instead of waltzing with each other and having adults making all their decisions. Jo, like all of us, is a product of her generation!” Hilda said exasperatedly.
“Maybe if more parents taught good old fashioned morals like Joey does then Hilda Edmonds would still be here!” Nancy said piously.
The previous summer Hilda Edmonds parents had written to the school to say that their fifteen-year-old daughter would not be returning to the school. The news had finally leaked out through Miss Moore, who knew the family that young Hilda had been sent to a home for unmarried mothers where she had given birth to a baby son. The boy had been quickly adopted and Hilda had finished her education under the watchful eye of her parents.
Julie Davidson, feeling that she was responsible for Nancy’s obviously ruffled feelings, did her best to soothe the matter over, “ I think part of the problem is that Jo does not want Lily to feel that they don’t grieve for her twin. Unfortunately she has gone too far the other way and has made Lily feel that they don’t rejoice in her. Jo is an excellent mother but I think she needs to help Lily sort out her feelings before something goes badly wrong!”
Hilda took the opportunity to end the conversation here and quickly changed the subject, but none of them knew how prophetic Julie Davidson’s words were going to turn out to be.

A strong wind blew up that night and continued for all of the next day, which was a Thursday. The snow had disappeared from all but the highest peaks and the wind was rapidly drying out the ground.
“If it is dry and calmer tomorrow I think we’ll give them the morning off and get them out for nice long rambles, “ Hilda said to Nancy as the pair of them sat going through correspondence. The Friday dawned bright and fair with the wind dying down to a gentle breeze. Lily dressing in a hurry never noticed that Marie and her friends had gone and raised the hem on her tunic by a good two inches. Several girls in the fourth had tried this experiment at the beginning of the term and had been caught and well and truly chastised by Matron. Marie looking for a way to pay Lilly back for the lump of gum which had been left on her seat had hit on this as a novel way of doing it. Lily had walked straight into the arms of matron and had been dealt with faithfully (I had to get that expression in somewhere!). Lily stamped of back to her dormitory to change, thus being late for Fruhstuck and earning herself a further row from Miss Annersley.
“Girls!” every head turned to look at Miss Annersley when she spoke, “once you have done you dormitory duties get into your warm trousers and walking boots and we will have rambles for the rest of the morning.” The head smiled at the cheer that greeted this and the meal continued happily. Nine o’clock saw all the girls assembled and waiting ready to leave. Upper II had been joined with lower III for their ramble and had Miss Richardson the PE mistress and Miss Charlesworth for their mistresses. Nancy Wilmot, knowing that Lily and Emily were fond of one another had relented and put the two forms together so that the two girls would enjoy the ramble together; this was a kindness she was to greatly regret. Lily, still smarting from the tongue-lashing she had received from matron, was itching to pay Marie back.

“Ok girls, keep in line until we reach the trees and then you may break as long as you stay in groups of no less than three and don’t get too far in front or behind. We’ll go as far as the river and then have elevenses there. Then you’ll have half an hour to explore before we return.” Ruey Richardson smiled at the excited girls before shouldering her rucksack with her own elevenses and first aid kit in it and leading the way. The girls were all delighted to be out in the fresh air after being confined in doors for so long. The rapid walk helped to shake the fidgets out of them and to soothe ruffled feathers. Lily, revelling in the freedom and the company of her bosom friend Emily began to forget her grievances and was soon joining in with the merry chatter and laughter. Miss Richardson was a great favourite with the girls and was well known as Auntie Ruey to Lily out with school hours. Indeed Lily was to be a bridesmaid at her wedding to a young German engineer in the summer and was greatly looking forward to the occasion. It is unfortunate then that Marie not looking where she was going should trip over a tree root and pitch into Lily sending her flying to the ground. Thankfully the ground was quite dry beneath the pines and Lily was unhurt, Marie gabbled an apology quickly but the damage had been done. Lily was not prepared to believe that it had been an accident and thoughts of revenge, forgotten in the fresh air, resurfaced.
“Be more careful in future Marie!” Ruey admonished, casting a curious glance a Lily’s face she wondered what was wrong with the girl to cause her to scowl so blackly at Marie. Sending the groups on again she left them to it and went back to discussing her wedding plans with Miss Charlesworth.

“Alright girls have your elevenses then you may have half an hour to explore,” Miss Charlesworth called when the river was reached.
The girls promptly divested themselves of their packs and sat down to see what they had been given in the way of eats. The school authorities, knowing that the girls would be hungry from the exercise, had asked the cooks to pack them a goodly selection of biscuits and bread twists along with a flask of hot chocolate for each.
“Isn’t the river low!” Miss Charlesworth said to Ruey, “I thought it would have been higher after the thaw.”
“I expect it has dammed somewhere higher up. There are normally a few trees come down in avalanches somewhere.” Ruey pointed out reasonable enough.
Miss Charlesworth looked nervously about her; “Maybe we should move the girls on from the banks then?”
“Don’t worry they are all moving now anyway. We don’t want any of them acting the giddy goat with wild imaginings either.” Ruey advised.
Miss Charlesworth agreed and went back to the conversation of earlier.
The girls were indeed all repacking their bags and moving off to explore. Marie strolled away with Julie and Karen and spent a delightful fifteen minutes wandering the banks of the river and playing Pooh sticks from the little wooden bridge which spanned its width. Marie, tiring of this after a while, left her companions to go and sit by one of the bridge supports and amused herself by watching the small birds which hopped along by the river side. It was here that Lily and Emily found her some ten minutes later, her head with its long plaits leaning against the bridge and her eyes closed as she daydreamed to the soothing sounds of the river.

Lily grabbed Emily’s arm and motioned her to be quiet. Then looking round to make sure that they were unobserved they sidled up to the unsuspecting Marie. Checking once more that Miss Richardson and Charlesworth were not looking in their direction Lily very carefully took the end of one of the plaits and jammed it in between the bridge support and the walkway. Then walking very quietly she and Emily escaped up the bank leaving Marie firmly attached to the bridge.
“Oh well time to call them back in and head for home I think!” Ruey said getting to her feet. Pulling her whistle from her pocket Ruey gave a shrill blast on it and watched as all the girls came running back. Marie, startled out of her dreams by the whistle, turned sharply only to be stopped with a jerk as her plait anchored her to the bridge. Turning as much as she could she tried to free her plait but in jamming it in Lily had managed to catch it on a nail, Marie was well and truly caught.
“Stand still girls till I do a quick head count!” Miss Charlesworth called. The girls all obediently stood still as the mistress quickly counted them and discovered that Marie was missing.
“Where is Marie Burnstein?” she called but just at that point a low rumbling sound drowned her words out.

The two mistresses and the girls turned in the direction of the noise which was getting louder and saw a wall of water rush down the mountainside heading straight for the river.
”Oh God Marie is still down there!” Ruey screamed, noticing for the first time the figure frantically trying to free her hair.
Even as everyone looked the water crashed over the top of Marie hiding her from their sight.
“Girls get into the woods and stay there!” Ruey shouted to the terrified girls and grabbing a rope and her knife from her pack she ran to the river.
The girls scrambled into the woods together and watched in a horrified silence as Miss Richardson tied the rope round her waist, and then tossing the end to Miss Charlesworth to tie around a boulder, plunged into the river.

It was here that the prefects found them a few moments later.
“What is going on girls?” Phil Maynard asked.
“Marie is caught in the river. Miss Richardson has gone in after her” Julie sobbed.
Phil looked in the direction Julie had pointed in and could just make out the red head of Ruey struggling through the water.
“Jane, Susan and Carol get these girls into line and march them back to the school. Janet you are the fastest runner, go ahead and tell the school what has happened.” Janet a slim, small girl with a serious face took to heels and set off through the trees. Phil turned to the remaining three prefects, “We’ll stay and help here.”
The prefects quickly organised the younger girls into a line and started to march them back to the school, no one noticed that Lily and Emily were both trembling violently and had to be supported by their friends.
Phil, Monica the games prefect, Rosamund the second prefect and Elaine who looked after the juniors made their way to where Miss Charlesworth was kneeling on the bank.
“Oh girls I’m so glad to see you!” she exclaimed.
“We have sent the other prees on ahead with the kids and to warn the school” Phil told her.
Miss Charlesworth nodded her thanks and resumed her watch of the river. Ruey could be seen by the bridge desperately hunting for Marie. Several smaller waves of water washed over her nearly sweeping her from her feet as her hands desperately groped for Marie. After what seemed like an eternity Ruey clutched at Marie’s jacket and grabbing her firmly tried to pull her to her. Ruey felt the resistance, as Marie’s hair remained caught in the bridge, feeling her way desperately through the water Ruey found the plait and taking her knife from her pocket she sliced through it. At once Marie’s body floated free and Ruey started to make her way through the water. The prefects and mistress left on the bank slowly began to pull the rope in helping Ruey to bring her burden in.

Monica reached out and took the limp body of Marie from Miss Richardson’s arms whilst the other prees helped the mistress out of the river. As Miss Charlesworth searched for a pulse on Marie, Phil and Rosamund wrapped a coat around Ruey and forced her to drink some hot chocolate.
“I can’t find a pulse!” Miss Charlesworth said urgently.
“I know CPR Miss Charlesworth” Monica said, and taking the girl in her arms Monica gave her a sharp slap on her back. Water poured from Marie’s mouth but she still didn’t breathe. Laying her on the ground Monica began the resuscitation process, after the longest few seconds of the watcher’s lives Marie gave a gasp and vomited onto the ground. Phil, who had been busy rooting around in the various rucksacks, came and thrust cups of chocolate into Monica and Miss Charlesworth’s hands. Then taking of her own coat she wrapped Marie in it and gently dribbled some chocolate down her throat.
“Ok we had better get back to the school now!” Miss Charlesworth said when she had swallowed the reviving chocolate.
Elaine, who was a big sturdy girl, picked up Marie whilst Phil and Miss Charlesworth gave a supporting arm to Ruey then they all set of at a fast march for school and warmth. Rosamund took Marie once they got half way through the trees for Elaine was beginning to tire. It was with great relief that the party saw the school car waiting for them when they finally got to the road. Matron came forward, her face anxious, she wrapped both Marie and Ruey up in blankets and got them into the car. The rest of the prefects and Miss Charlesworth piled in and they were rushed back to the school where hot baths and bed awaited them all.

Hilda Annersley sighed as she looked out of the window and thought over the happenings of the day. Marie, who could have been so easily lost, was asleep in the san. Her face and body was badly cut and bruised where it had been cut by debris in the water but Jack had looked at her and he was hopeful that she would suffer only a cold from her immersion in the water. She had roused up sufficiently following her hot bath to take some soup and had then fallen into a natural slumber. Ruey too was safely in the san but she was a sturdy individual and had already complained at being sent to bed as if she were no older than Marie was. The rest of the second and third formers were ordered into hot baths as a precaution and had then spent the afternoon being read to in a bid to keep their minds from dwelling on the day’s trauma. So far all anyone in authority knew was that somehow Marie’s hair had got caught and she had been unable to escape. Lily and Emily had submitted to the various ministrations meted out to them in a shocked silence that continued until they were all sent to early bed. Lily pulled her cubicle curtains and sat down on the edge of her bed.
“I nearly killed someone today! My stupid revenge nearly killed Marie!” the thoughts whirled round her head. Lily looked at her watch, it was nearly twenty o’clock and from all around her came the thankful sighs as the girls sank wearily into their beds. Making up her mind Lily got up and headed for the door.
“Lily where are you going? You can’t leave the dormitory!” Polly called after her. Ignoring her Lily continued on her way to Emily’s dormitory. Pushing open the door she went straight for Emily’s cubicle paying no attention to the various outcries of the other girls their.
Emily was already sitting on the bed with her dressing gown on.
“I know!” was all she said before getting up and following Lily from the room down to Miss Annersley’s study.

For a wonder the two girls managed to get there without being intercepted by any of the mistresses. Pausing before the door Lily reached out and squeezed Emily’s hand in a vaguely comforting gesture. Emily gave her a weak smile and then reached forward to tap gently on the door.
“Come in” Miss Annersley’s lovely voice called.
Trembling now Lily pushed open the door and entered the study followed closely by Emily.
“Good grief girls, you should be in bed! What ever is the matter?” the head reached out and drew the girls over to the fire.
“Now suppose you tell me what this is all about?” she said as she settled herself in her armchair.
Lily took a deep breath before blurting out; “It was my fault. Marie’s hair I did it.”
“It was me too!” Emily added quickly with a lack of grammar, which would have brought the head’s wrath down on her head at any other time.
“I think you had better sit down and then start at the beginning and tell me the whole story!” Miss Annersley leant back in her chair and surveyed the two girls with a grave face.
Between many sobs and pauses Lily and Emily told the head the entire story starting right back at the first day of school. When they at last came to a stumbling halt the head reached out and rang her bell. Despite the lateness of the hour Rosalie Dene came promptly in answer to the summons.
“Rosalie dear could you send for hot milk for Emily and Lily please. Then once you have done that will you ask Miss Wilmot to come to my study and then get Jo on the phone for me please.” Hilda requested.
Lily raised horrified eyes to her headmistress but a held up hand forestalled anything she had been about to say. The milk arrived and the two girls drank it in silence. Miss Wilmot and Rosalie entered the room together and Rosalie announced that Jo was now on the line.
“Thank you Rosalie, will you take the two girls into the office and I will take the call in here.” Hilda said.
Lily and Emily followed Rosalie from the room whilst Hilda got slowly to her feet and picked up the phone.
“Hello Jo, will you and Jack come over to the school please? I need to see you urgently.” Hilda listened for Jo’s reply and then hung up the receiver. “Oh, Nancy I feel so old!” Hilda said sinking into her chair and burying her head in her hands.

But if you think of it in terms of Betty Wynne-Davies being 'expelled' because of the way the rest of the form and school would treat her (and I use expelled in 'these' because it was made that she wasn't being expelled in the same way Thelka was), I think many of the girls in Lily and Marie's form would feel similarly shocked and upset at what happened. It may be better to remove her to avoid all that and send her to another school (with some counselling for her and her parents).

Jo and Jack arrived a few minutes later; given the lateness of the hour and the urgency of the message Jack had driven them round to the front door. Passing the open door of Rosalie Dene’s office they saw Lily and Emily sitting white faced and miserable, Joey would have gone to her daughter but Jack took a firm hold of her arm and pulled her to the study.
“Jack, Jo sit down please.” Hilda had pulled herself together during the time that had elapsed since her call and their arrival. She had also given Nancy a brief outline of the story the girls had told her.
“Hilda what has happened? Lily, are you..” Jo burst out.
Hilda forestalled the question on her lips, “Please Joey, I need you to listen to me.”
Joey fell silent but her face wore a tortured look. Jack reached out for her hand.
“Joey my love, whatever it is we will meet it together, but now let Hilda speak.” He told her gently.
Quietly Hilda told them the whole story as she had heard it from Lily and Emily only a short time ago. Jo and Jack listened with bowed heads but Hilda could see that Jo had to bite her lip to stop the tears welling up in her eyes from overflowing. As the tale came to its end neither spoke and the old clock on the wall ticked the passing of several seconds before either broke the silence.
It was Jack, who finally spoke,
“I’m sorry!” he said simply. “I take it you would like us to take her home with us?”
A low moan escaped Jo’s lips and she tightened her grip on her husband’s hand.
“Marie is going to be alright isn’t she?” Joey pleaded.
“Yes Jo, Marie will be fine. Now Jo I want you to take Lily and Emily home with you tonight. No, wait let me finish” Hilda said as Jo made to speak. “Today has been a very long and trying day, Nancy and I need time to think over what has happened and decide what is the best thing to do. Lily and Emily have both shown genuine contrition and horror at what they did today and that does go in their favour, but it does not diminish the seriousness of their act. Both the girls are tired and overwrought; Nancy and I think they would be better away from the school for the weekend. We don’t believe that anyone knows that they had anything to do with it and we don’t know what Marie herself realises but that is not to say that they won’t guess. At the moment it will serve no purpose for their classmates to know about it, they will be told that the girls took a bad fright from today and have been sent to you to recover. Most of them will assume they are feeling guilty about their feud, indeed I fully expect several more confessions about the bad feelings in the form over the next few days! Now please take them home and allow us some time to decide whether we can keep them at the school or not.” Hilda rose slowly to her feet and Jo was suddenly struck by how old she looked. Going to her old friend she dropped a kiss onto her cheek, “I’m sorry that my daughter has done this to you Hilda,” she said before leaving to collect Lily and Emily.

The two girls looked up as Jo and Jack entered the office, it was evident from their tear stained faces that both had been crying bitterly. Jo’s heart smote her as she looked down at the two little bundles of misery that they made but she knew that there would be no good gained from being soft with them now.
“Come girls you are to spend tonight at Freudeshiem,” Jack’s voice was carefully controlled. Although he was furiously angry with both girls he recognised that bed was the only place for them at the moment.
Lily cast a tremulous look at her parents before following them obediently from the room with Emily trailing after her. At the door Matron met them with the small cases she had quickly packed for each containing all they would need for the weekend. Both dormitories had been asleep when this had been done, a fact which had greatly relieved Miss Annersley’s mind as she had feared that the two girls sudden departure from the dormitories would have stirred the remaining girls to excitement and gossip. Lily and Emily were quickly bundled into the waiting car and whisked home to Freudeshiem. No one spoke on the short journey and Lily, waiting on tenterhooks to find out what was to be their fate, felt as if she could scream. Once at Freudeshiem the two girls were led straight into the study. Jack sat behind his desk with Jo at his side,
“You are to go straight to bed and you will stay there until you are called tomorrow. You are both in the same room but there is to be no talking until I give you leave. Is that understood?” Jack waited for the two girls to nod their understanding before indicating that they should now leave the room. Lily made it as far as the door before she broke down and great sobs racked her body. Emily, herself not far from the same emotion, put her arms around her friend’s body and held her tight. Jack crossed the room swiftly to his daughter and picking her up gently, carried her to bed where a small dose soon saw her fast asleep. Jo followed behind with Emily, a motherly arm round her shoulders giving the girl comfort. Jo and Jack waited until both girls slept before going thankfully to their own rest.

You are dealing with this in a wonderful way. Joey and Jack are being so controlled, I'm glad they didn't row the girls any more, and had enough compassion to put them to bed.

I don't know how you manage to write these scenes. I find the 'dealing with offenders' scenes amongst the most difficult to write. You are managing it so well though.

Jo and Jack left the girls to sleep late the next morning so it was ten o’clock before they were finally woken by Mrs Williams taking in their breakfast on trays. Although Jo had told her that the two girls had been put into silence Mrs Williams still took the opportunity to address a remark to Lily when Emily went off to splash her face with water.
“Hello my poor darling. I don’t know why they are making such a fuss, it’s not as if the wretched child is hurt! Now don’t you fret yourself, everything will be alright.”
Jo herself came in at this point to ensure that both ate at least some of the porridge and rolls provided for them so nothing more was said, but Lily was secretly horrified at the callous remarks. Emily returned to the room and Lily put Mrs Williams remarks to the back of her mind, eyeing her mother apprehensively for she wore a very grave look Lily ventured one question.
“Please Mamma do you know how Marie is?”
Jo’s face softened, “She is very tired and aching but other than that she is fine,” then seeing that the pair had eaten as much as they could she told them to “dress quickly and then come straight down to the study” before leaving with their trays.
Lily and Emily looked at one another and then with one accord dressed as quickly as they could in the hope that they could get their ordeal out of the way as quickly as possible.
Jo rejoined her husband in the study to await the arrival of the two girls. She and Jack had already had a busy morning for they had already talked to Miss Annersley and to Emily’s father as well as having discussed how best to handle the situation amongst themselves. A nervous tap heralded the arrival of Lily and Emily.
“Come in” Jack called as he offered up a quick prayer for help in dealing with his wayward daughter.
Lily pushed open the door and trailed across the floor to stand in front of her father’s desk with Emily at her side.
“Sit down” Jack indicated the two chairs in front of his desk. For a full minute he surveyed the girls sitting dejectedly in front of him. Jack and Jo had both been worried that after a nights rest Lily would prove to be defiant over her actions, it was with great relief that Jack found only contrition in his daughter’s face.
It was Jo, who on receiving a slight nod from Jack, who spoke first.
“First of all we must tell you that the school has not yet decided if they will expel you or not. We have spoken to Miss Annersley and Miss Wilmot and as they have rightly pointed out it is not a decision that can be made lightly or quickly. Miss Annersley, Miss Wilmot and your form mistresses will meet later today to discuss your behaviour and to try and decide on the best course of action. I’m sure I don’t need to point out to you that you are extremely lucky not to be expelled immediately and it is only the fact that you decided to own up that has so far stayed this decision. Secondly, “ here Jo turned so that she was talking only to Emily. “ The school have contacted your father to tell him about what has happened.”
Emily gasped and went whiter than she had already been, Jack poured a glass of water from the pitcher on his desk and handed it to her.
“Emily your father is obviously extremely disappointed in you. He is flying out here on Monday to see you himself. Until then he has put you in our care and has asked us to deal with you in the same way as we deal with Lily.” Jo handed a clean handkerchief to Emily who had begun to cry dismally.
“Enough!” Jack spoke sharply and Emily choked back her sobs to stare at him with frightened eyes. “ The act which you both carried out yesterday nearly resulted in a girl losing her life! Crying will not change that. From what Miss Annersley told us it would seem that this act was just the culmination in a long catalogue of similar nasty tricks. Now we want to hear from your own lips exactly why you decided to embark on this feud and everything which happened!” Leaning back Jack waited for them to begin.

Title: Re: Lily and Marie
Post by Ianswythe on Sep 24th, 2003, 6:13pm
Once again Lily and Emily told the story of how they had started out by playing tricks on Marie, who had eventually retaliated. It would have been a relief to tell her parents everything but for some reason Lily found that she could not quite bring herself to tell them about Mrs Williams words regarding the death of Rose and Marie’s mothers involvement, instead she gave the cause of the feud as simply being a case of dislike. Jo raised her eyebrows when she heard this; she hadn’t been the mother of seven girls without learning something about them and there was more to this than simple dislike!
“Honestly Mamma and Papa we didn’t know that the river had dammed further up and that it was going to flood. We only wanted her to get a row for not coming when the whistle went!” Lily finally wound up.
“Lily you have lived in the Alps your entire life and you should have known that the rivers frequently dam during the winter months. For two girls who are in your teens you showed an extreme lack of intelligence and foresight!” Lily and Emily blushed at this damning assessment of their intelligence. “You have both encouraged one another to act in a thoroughly underhand, deceitful and downright dangerous manner and I can only assume from this that neither is a good influence on the other” Here Jack paused long enough to glare at the two girls who were now squirming in their seats before continuing. “Assuring us that you did not intend for Marie to be nearly drowned and for one of your teachers to have to in turn risk her own life does not make your behaviour seem any better! Trying to deliberately get a classmate into trouble with her teachers is a despicable thing to do!” Jack finished.

“Until such time as the school has decided what is too happen to you, you will both remain in the house. You may not go out unless accompanied by one of us. You will also keep out of the kitchen.” Jo informed them, “Emily when your father comes I am sure he will have things he wishes to say to you on the subject.”
“Do either of you have anything you wish to add or ask?” Jack asked.
“Is Daddy very angry with me?” Emily asked in a plaintive voice.
“Yes Emily he is. He loves you very much but no parent likes to think that his or her child can do such a terrible thing. You are all that he has left of your Mummy and it was your Mummy’s last wish that you should go to the Chalet School. If you are expelled then you will be not only be letting yourself down but also your Mummy and Daddy.” Jo told her.
“When you acted in the manner that you both did you also let God down!” Jack pointed out seriously. “You were both brought up to be Christians yet you managed to forget the teachings of God and behave in a manner which you knew to be wrong.”
“May we see Marie to say we are sorry?” Lily asked.
“You must ask Miss Annersley that when you next see her. Now if that is all I think you should run along and find a book for now.” Jack said.
“Emily do you mind going to the salle I need to speak to Lily for a few minutes.”  Jo put in unexpectedly.
Emily obediently left the room leaving the Maynards alone. Jack raised a quizzical eyebrow at his wife but she ignored him and turned to Lily.
“Come over to the settee Lily, there is something I need to ask you” Jo said and taking her daughters hand she led her to the seat suggested.
“Now suppose you tell me what the feud between you and Marie was really about?” Jo suggested gently.
Lily looked up at her mother, shock plain in her face.
“What do you mean?” Lily stammered.
“Lily there was more to this than you just not liking Marie. Papa and I would like to know what it is. You know you can always tell Mamma and Papa anything and we will always do our best to help you.” Jo kept her tone gentle and Lily broke down under it.
“She ..she said that if her Mamma had been here you wouldn’t have fallen and Rose would have lived. I believed her and hated Marie for it. I thought that if Rose had lived you would have been happier than it being just me!” Lily sobbed this out leaving Jo and Jack wildly confused.

Terrific, and I do hope that Joey & Jack take the opportunity to listen to Lily and understand how they have contributed to her unhappiness instead of taking the easy option and blaming it all on Mrs W.

“What Marie said that?” Jack asked, but Joey shook her head at him.
“Lily who was it that told you that? You must tell us for whoever it was they did not tell you the truth.” Joey spoke firmly, but Lily merely shook her head.
A knock at the study door interrupted them and Mrs Williams entered bearing a tray of coffee.
“I thought you would like your morning coffee now,” she announced, but Jo and Jack were not listening to her. Instead they were looking at Lily who had blushed a dark red as soon as Mrs Williams had entered the room and was staring miserably at the ground.
“Thank you” said Jack abruptly and jumping up he ushered Mrs Williams out of the door.
As soon as the door was closed behind her Jo turned to Lily and demanded, “What exactly did Mrs Williams say to you?”
Startled into it Lily told her parents exactly what Mrs Williams had said to her on the first day of term.
Jack’s face darkened with anger as he heard of the insidious thoughts that Mrs Williams had placed in his daughter’s mind.
“Darling” Jack kept his voice carefully controlled, “Mamma would still have fallen even if Anna had been here. It was Anna’s day off, she was perfectly entitled to go out. There is no way that any blame for the accident can be put on Anna’s shoulders, and we have certainly never reproached her in any way for it!”
“And sweetheart we are very happy that we have you and you have brought so much joy to us. Yes we wished that little Rose had survived but it was not God’s will and we accept that. But we have never felt that you were not enough and I am so sorry if we have made you feel that way!” Jo hugged her daughter tightly.
Jack sat down beside his wife and daughter and put his arms around them.
"My precious little girl you are a wonderful gift to us and I am sorry if we made you feel neglected. I promise we will never make you feel that way again!" Jack's voice was gruff with emotion.

“Oh Jack, what have we done to Lily?” Jo, having seen her daughter safely settled with milky coffee in the salle, now returned to her husband’s side.
“At least now we know we can do something about it!” Jack reassured her, “the question is what do we do about Mrs Williams?”
“She has got to go!” Jo was emphatic. “I am not exposing Lily to any more of her evil notions!”
“I quite agree with you there, but equally we must take some of the blame ourselves. We should have seen what was happening to Lily and helped her. I think however that we should talk to Mrs Williams sooner rather than later.” And Jack suiting his action to the word got up and rang the bell for Mrs Williams.
“Would you like me to clear the cups away now?” Mrs Williams asked when she answered the bell.
“No Mrs Williams the cups may wait but we would like to know why you told our daughter that Frau Burnstein was responsible for the death of her sister?” Jack was at his most imposing.
“It was a wicked and untrue thing to tell her and has nearly resulted in the death of another child!” Jo’s eyes were blazing with anger.
Mrs Williams gave Jo and Jack a look of contempt, “ Don’t blame me for your own inadequacies as parents! If you had paid more attention to Lily instead of gallivanting around the cemetery then this would never have happened!”
“Enough!” Jack’s voice cut across her diatribe like a whiplash. “ Mrs Maynard and I are fully aware of our own fallibility as parents. We are also aware of the mistake we have made in taking you into our home and allowing you to corrupt Lily’s mind. You will pack your bags and leave our home immediately. I will book you a room in the hotel and pay for it until the end of the month; you will also be paid until them. But you will not remain under this roof a minute longer. Now go!”
Mrs Williams shrank away from Jack’s anger, her eyes wide with fright. Never had she seen Jack so angry in all her years of working for the family.
“Mrs Williams you will not talk to or approach Lily as long as you stay in this area, is that clear?” Jo told her, before adding scornfully “ I pity you for being so pathetic as to try and corrupt a child in such a manner!”
Mrs Williams glared at them and then scuttled to the door but once there she threw one last defiant remark back at them, “You’re not fit to have one child far less twelve!” then wrenching open the door she disappeared to pack her bags.
Jo sank down into an armchair.
“Oh Jack what a horrible time this has been!” she wailed.
“Hush dear, it isn’t quite over yet. We still have to hear Miss Annersley’s verdict!” Jack pointed out. “Now come let’s go and see the girls, I’m sure they need to have their minds occupied for the time being.”

I doubt if Lily will be expelled. She's a Maynard, and she went to see Miss Annersley of her own accord to confess what she had done wrong. She also seems to be genuinely repentant, so I doubt if she will be expelled.

What I would really like to see is the scene between Emily and her father, that should be a humdinger.

Not a hint or anything, you understand, just a wish.

Marie woke up to find herself tucked up in a strange bed and her Mamma and Papa sitting beside her.
“Hello liebling, how do you feel?” Anna asked her.
“I’m fine Mamma, just slightly sore. When may I get up please?” Marie asked hopefully.
“Not just yet! Now here comes the nurse with some food for you. You must eat it all and then we must leave you to rest.” Her Papa told her, greatly relieved to hear her sounding so well.
Marie ate the food provided and once her parents had seen her settled to their satisfaction they left her to rest. Marie lay against her pillow thinking over what had happened the day before. She was certain that Lily and Emily had had something to do with her hair getting jammed for she knew it had not happened naturally. Matron entered her room at that moment to see how she was.
“Matron may I see Lily Maynard please?” Marie asked impulsively.
Matron gave her a speculative look.
“Why do you want to see her?” she asked.
“I just thought it would be nice to talk to someone for a while,” Marie said innocently.
“Marie how much do you know of what happened yesterday?” Matron asked curiously.
“Why? How much does Miss Annersley know?” Marie asked shrewdly.
Matron bit her lip to stop from laughing outright at this innocent cheek.
“ Well suppose you tell me confidentially what you know and then I will tell you what we know?” Matron bargained.
“Ok” Marie said slowly, “ My hair didn’t get caught accidentally, but I know they didn’t mean for happened to happen.”
“Well Lily and Emily have told Miss Annersley what happened.” Matron told her watching the little face with interest.
“What will happen to them? They won’t be expelled will they?” Marie asked anxiously.
“I really don’t know Marie. Now you should try and sleep.” and Matron bestowed a rare kiss on her cheek before leaving the girl to her rest.
Marie gave her five minutes and then got into her dressing gown before fleeing through the corridors in search of Miss Annersley.

Matron heard the soft click of the san door closing and smiled to herself, “maybe Marie will help Hilda and Nancy in their decision about Lily and Emily!” she thought. Then peeping out of the door she satisfied herself that Marie was wrapped up well before returning to her laundry lists.
Marie continued her headlong flight towards Miss Annersley’s study ignoring all rules regarding running in the corridors, hurtling round a corner she came to an abrupt stop as she ran into no less a person than the head girl herself, Phil Maynard.
“Hey there! What do you think you are doing?” Phil’s hands caught and steadied her. “Marie! You should be in bed, not running about the corridors!” she scolded as looked down into the young face.
“Oh please I have to see the head!” and freeing herself with a frantic wriggle Marie set off again leaving Phil staring open mouthed at her.
Arriving at the study door without any further incident she banged sharply on the door.
“Come in” Miss Annersley’s voice sounded surprised.
Entering the room Marie bobbed her curtsey and then stopped as she saw that Miss Annersley was not alone. With her were Miss Wilmot, Miss Charlesworth and Miss Richardson, all of whom were now staring at her with enquiring eyes.
“Good grief child, what are you doing out of bed?” Miss Annersley came forward and pulled Marie to a seat beside the fire.
“I had to talk to you Miss Annersley. Please don’t expel Lily and Emily!” Marie implored.
The four women exchanged glances.
“What makes you think we are going to expel them?” Miss Annersley enquired gently.
“Because off yesterday, but they didn’t know the river would flood and I have played as many tricks on them as they have played on me!” Marie slid from her seat to kneel by the side of her headmistress, a pleading look in her blue eyes.
“Marie what Lily and Emily did yesterday was very foolish and dangerous and could easily have had a fatal outcome! It is not something we can ignore or treat as a silly piece of mischief. Now suppose you tell me what has brought you from bed to try and intercede on their behalf?” Miss Annersley spoke gravely.
“Because Lily once said that my Mamma was responsible for her Mamma having an accident and for Lily’s sister dying. I know that isn’t true but if Lily thinks it is then she must be very unhappy! I don’t want her to be sadder because she can’t come back here. I don’t think my Mamma would want that either!” Marie said seriously.
Miss Annersley looked down into the blue eyes by her side, then bending down she kissed the small face, “Bless you child, you have a kind heart. Now you scoot off back to bed before Matron misses you.”
Satisfied that she had done her best Marie promptly scooted. Hilda got up and went and picked up the house telephone, “Hello Matron, I think Marie would benefit from a hot glass of milk!” she listened to the reply before ringing off and returning to her colleagues.
“Well that clears up why Lily did it but it still doesn’t tell us what we should do!” Nancy said.
“I think it might be best if we called Jo and Jack over. They might be able to shed some more light on the matter and I really think we need to have all the facts before we make a decision on this one!” Hilda suggested.

“Certainly Hilda, we’ll be right over.” Jo hung up the receiver and looked at her husband. “Hilda wants to see us,” she told him.
Jack nodded and then called Lily and Emily, “Girls go through to Len and stay with her until we come back.”
The two girls gave nervous nods but went off obediently, “Come on dear lets go and hear the worst,” Jack said grimly.
Ten minutes later Hilda opened the French windows to them and ushered them in, biting back a smile as she did so at the expression on Jo’s face.
“Good grief Jo looks exactly as if it were thirty five years ago and she was being summoned for a telling off!” Hilda mused to herself as she watched Jo’s expressive face, which held a look of guilt mixed with trepidation.
A cough from Nancy brought Hilda back to the present and she gestured for the pair to sit.
“Now before you ask,” she began stalling the question on both their lips, “ we have not reached a decision yet. However owning to some new information we feel we need to talk to you and try to find out a few facts. Marie herself has come to us to plead for leniency for Lily and Emily. She informed us that Lily was of the opinion that Frau Burnstein was somehow responsible for the premature birth of the twins and the loss of little Rose. We need to find out how Lily conceived this notion?”
Jo spoke with a strange bitterness in her tone, “ It seems that Mrs Williams put that idea into her head and that we helped by not paying our daughter enough attention!”
“What on earth?” Nancy looked startled.
“Mrs Williams told Lily on the first day of term that had Anna been in the house on the day I fell then the accident would never have happened and she and her sister would have been born safely when they should have been. Lily it seems has been feeling that we loved her less because we lost her sister and as a result took this resentment out on Marie. Jack and I have had to face up to the fact that we have let Lily down rather badly!” Jo told them in a choked voice.
“So what are you going to do about, well about everything?” Nancy asked.
Jo gave a wry smile at this question.
“We have told Mrs Williams to leave immediately, we will not keep her in the house when she is having that sort of an influence over Lily. As for our own part, well we need to start making more time for Lily.” Jo explained.
Jack cleared his throat and took up the tale.
“We may as well tell you this now before you make your decision about keeping her in the school or not. We have decided to take Lily away for an extended holiday during the summer. I have decided that it is time for me to retire and concentrate on my family. If you decide to allow her to continue her education here then we will be removing her a month early at summer and returning her a month late. We are planning on visiting Simone, Frieda and Marie first. We will then go onto England and see Phil safely settled at university and visit Madge and Dick. Then we go onto Scotland for a holiday alone, just the three of us. Hopefully it will help us to get to know our daughter again and give her a chance to realise that we do love her very much!”

Title: Re: Lily and Marie
Post by Ianswythe on Oct 2nd, 2003, 6:43pm
“I must say that I think it is a very good idea!” Hilda said approvingly. “You all need a holiday and I think it will help Lily no end.”
“Would you like us to leave again whilst you talk matters over?” Jack asked anxiously.
“No I don’t think that will be necessary.” Hilda told him. “ I am confident that Nancy will agree with what I am about to say.” Nancy nodded her head for she was sure of what Hilda was going to say. “In nearly forty years of the Chalet Schools existence we have only ever expelled three people. It is a record of which we can be justly proud off. Today I feared this total was going to increase to five. However with what we have been told and with Marie’s own wishes then I feel that we can allow both girls to continue their education here.” Jo gave a gasp of relief. “Although it does not excuse Lily’s actions she is currently a very mixed up little girl, to punish her by excluding her from the school would not help her. You are both excellent parents and I know that you will help her through this. Obviously we cannot keep Lily and expel Emily so both girls must stay. I think the scare that they have received from this will be a warning to them in years to come and that we will see a difference in their behaviour. I am sure that one day they will be Chalet School girls of whom we can be very proud!”
Jo sobbed quietly as this great weight was lifted from her, Jack put his arm around her before speaking.
”Do you want us to send for the girls so that you may tell them?” he asked.
“Yes I think it might be for the best if we put them out of their misery!” Hilda said.
Jack went to the telephone and rang Len and asked her to send the girls over to the heads study.

Fifteen minutes later the two girls arrived, looking every inch the proper schoolgirls, outside the door of the head’s study. The entered, in response to their knock, to find Miss Annersley alone sitting behind her desk.
“Lily, Emily come over here. I am sure you are anxious to hear what we have decided regarding your behaviour yesterday.” The two girls nodded dismally at the head’s grave tones before remembering their manners under her icy look and chorusing “Yes Miss Annersley.”
“ Your behaviour yesterday was abominable and it is only through the grace of God that you do not have the death of a classmate on your consciences today. As it is you must go through life knowing that your foolhardiness and spite nearly caused a tragedy. We have decided to allow you to remain in the school. Partly as a result of Marie’s own intercession on your behalf!” she told them sharply as she saw the joy which flashed over their faces.” You are very fortunate that she is such a forgiving person! Obviously I cannot promise that your Father will not decide to remove you from here and return you to England where he can keep a closer eye on your behaviour Emily, that is entirely up to him. There is no possible punishment that we can mete out that does justice to your behaviour. Instead we must leave it to your own conscience to remind you of what you have done and the disappointment your parents and the school feel. In future we can only hope that you will use considerable influence and brains to the good of the school, her pupils and yourselves, and not bring any more disgrace on us as you have done in the past. But understand one thing, there will be no more chances! Now there is nothing left to say. You will return to Freudeshiem for the remainder of the weekend and please do not let me hear any more complaints regarding your behaviour ever again!” Miss Annersley nodded her dismissal at them but Lily stood her ground.
“Thank you Miss Annersley, but please may we see Marie. We would like to apologise to her.” She asked tentatively.
“You must ask Matron that, but you may go and see.” Miss Annersley told them.

The two girls bobbed their curtsey and left the room quickly. Hurriedly they made their way along to the san and politely requested permission to see the patient.
“Very well, but no more than five minutes!” Matron told them firmly.
The two girls thanked her politely and then tapped on the door to Marie’s room.
“Come in” Marie sounded bored.
Lily and Emily entered the room and stood at the door looking shyly at Marie lying in bed.
“Hello,” they said, suddenly unsure of themselves.
“Hello. You can come closer you know!” Marie told them.
Obediently the two came closer to the bed, “Marie we’re very sorry about everything we have done to you! We didn’t mean for what happened to happen.” Lily said quickly.
“Yes, and thank you for speaking to the head. It was very decent of you.” Emily added.
“It’s alright. I didn’t think you meant to drown me. I’m sorry for everything I did to you too. So what is going to happen to you?”  Marie asked.
“We are getting to stay, but only just. The Abbess made us feel like the worst sort of maggots there are!” Emily told her expressively.
“I suppose we are though! We nearly killed you!” Lily shuddered at the memory.
“Yes well it wasn’t pleasant, but I’m fine now.” Marie assured her. “I’m hoping they’ll let me get up on Monday, I’m so bored here!”
The three girls chatted for a minute more before Matron came to chase them away but the rift had been healed and all three were much happier as a result.

All three girls returned to school on the Monday and none of their classmates were any the wiser as to what had really happened by the river. Emily’s father duly arrived and had a very serious talk with his young daughter during which he pointed out how disappointed her mother would have been. His words stayed with Emily for the rest of her life and she found herself trying to be the sort of daughter her mother would have been proud off. All tricks stopped and the girls got down to some serious work before breaking up for the Easter holidays. Lily, Emily, Marie and Julie formed a quiet friendship amongst themselves much to the relief of the school and Jo and Jack. Mrs Williams left the Platz and Jo and Jack began to prepare for their long holiday with Lily. The only other excitement came when Len Entwhistle gave birth to four girls. Jo rejoiced in being a grandmother to quads and Lily rejoiced when Len named one of the four for her, the four being named in whole as Lily Rose, Mary Louise, Josephine Daphne and Constance Anne.

But for people who like detail the other expulsion was when they started allowing the girls to socialise with boys at dances. A fifteen year old was caught getting too friendly with young one man and the school expelled her in order to make an example of her. They didn't want the girls thinking that sort of behaviour acceptable!

Nobody named after Margot then!!

Len already has a daughter named Margaret for Margot.

By the way did anyone notice that Len's youngest child was only four months old when she became pregnant with the quads! My family planning wasn't very good in that one!

thank you all for your sympathy and kind thoughts.

Ditto ditto! (I know I'm being repetitive!)
Are you going to send it to Liss? Much easier to download it from there than from the drabbles!

Please send it in to Liss.  I want it to be safe, and with the current crop of disappearing threads, you never know what will happen to any of them!!!

Terrific story, Ianswythe, and please send it to Liss. It's far too good to disappear, and really deserves a place in the fiction.
