Title: Letters to Satan
Post by Angel on Dec 18th, 2003, 11:06pm
Hmm, having lost Satan vs OOAOML and various other ML threads, including one where she was being bumped off as head, I was wondering whether an 'every ML cliché under the sun' thread might be doable. Round Robin.

Given the minds of the denizens of this board, the title may be appropriate...

Joey looked from her quads to the heavily pregnant Mary Lou. "So much for us being the women that wouldn't ever Marry."

"Well, I haven't married, just got myself pregnant." Joey looked somewhat shocked at this, having assumed that the absence of a wedding ring was merely due to heavily swollen fingers in her visitor.

She stood up abruptly, swiftly followed by ML, who suffering form High Blood Pressure, keeled over, and fell to the floor, still, grey, and to all appearance, dead.

Jo, her arms full of babies, looked at Mary-Lou lying there, still and grey and decided to send for her faithful help, as it was beyond her to do anything herself.  Clutching the babies tighter to her she crossed the room and with an adept bit of juggling of small bodies, rang the bell for Anna.

Drying her hands on her apron, anna came from the kitchen to the Saal, and stood just inside the door.
'Ja mein Frau,' she enquired trying but not quite succeeding to keep the weariness out of her voice.
'Phone for Dr Maynard, please,' Jo said not quite meeting Anna's eyes. 'Tell him Miss Trelawney is not well.'

(sorry couldn't resist clicheing (?) Jo too.)

Anna glanced at the body on the floor, and nodded. Going out of the room she ignored Joey's instruction and went to the kitchen instead.

Joey, still clutching an armful of babies, was surprised when Anna returned, bearing a large cup. 'Herr Doktor is unable to come at the moment, meine Frau, but he is sending another doctor as soon as one becomes free. I have brought you a cup of coffee, you look as if you have had a shock,'
'Oh, bless you, Anna, I could do with a cup.' Sitting down and juggling the babies, Joey managed to take the cup and drained it in one long swallow.

Anna reached out and loaded the babies into her apron as Joey slid down to join Mary Lou on the floor. 'Now I will telephone to the doctor,' said Anna, going out of the room.

The shade of Mary Lou detached itself from the inert body lying on the salon floor, her appearance changing from the heavily pregnant woman in her late twenties to the bossy 17 year old that at heart she had always been.

Glancing round the room she took in not only her corpreal form but the still figure of her hostess, the greenish tinge around the mouth giving the indicaton that this had not been a normal death.

With matter of fact practicalty she settled herself on the chair, itself a difficult feat as without substance she kept slippling into the soft cushions, and waited, certain that her hostesses shade would soon be joining hers.

Slowly Joey's shade began to raise itself upwards, however rather than the slightly haggered late 40 year old whose body had borne fifteen children she appeared as a

irrepressible middle, just as she once had been. Mary-Lou looked at her and rubbed her hands with glee.

That is she would have done if her hands hadn't slipped through each other. Ignoring this little setback Mary Lou stood upright, floating about a foot above the ground and looking glared at Joey who was now jumping in and out of the coffee table.

What would have been a very impressive glare was somewhat spoilt by the fact that out of the corner of her eye she noticed something else was happening to her body as it lay on the floor.

two small children floated up from the distended stomach, changing in appearance as they did from new borns, growing through several years in a matter of seconds to settle themselves as three year olds.

Jo stopped jumping and looked round at the children who had begun to fight with each other
"oh god, I hoped that there wouldn't have been children, why is there always children.  If it wasn't for Jack being so devout i would have got my tubes tied at the start, can't stand the things"

"It's revenge for your comments years ago," another voice chimed in, and Madge's shadow sailed through the doorway, completely sans children. "Oh yes," she said in resigned tones in response to the questioning glances from Jo and Mary-Lou, "Marie did me in. It's 'Servants Uprising' week. Didn't you know? Most careless of you both, I must say!"

There was a low grumbling sound followed by a large bang and a small green Ford Fiesta appeared outside the open french doors of salon.

The driver, whose wings and halo made her instantly recognisable as an angel despite the oil stained robe and matted dirty hair, stuck her head through the open window

"five to go" she called and then looking down at her clipboard
"Madge Russel ne Bettany, Josephine Maynard ne Bettany, MaryLouise Trelawny and 2 nameless souls"  She looked up at the five shades who had gathered round the car

"and who do you think you are" Mary Lou's tone was superior and condesending
"collection angel" she replied simply "get in"
"shant" said jo sticking her tounge out
"Josephine" her sister replied sternly
"look" the angel rolled her silver eyes as she spoke with exaggerated patience "you might as well get in, if were not on time then it will go against you"

Madge tried to open the car door but her hand kept slipping through the handle
"your not doing it right" Mary Lou spoke in her best head girl tone
"oh and you'd know what was the right way to do it" Madge replied sarcastically
"open" the angel said weakly and the door of the car sprang open, passing striaght through Mary Lou's shade. "get in"

The two children clambered in followed by Mary Lou and then Madge and finally with great reluctance Joey.

*Collection Angel report.*

2 irrepressible know-it-alls, with a certain penchance for meddling
2 unredeemed child - souls
1 long-suffering sister.

Some resistance was encountered with the irrepressible know-it-alls, who were somewhat reluctant to get in the appropriate transport. The Long Suffering sister struggled when we got to her stop, as the grass seemed to go right through her feet. Her comment was "It's all so much more real here."*

At the second stop the remaining four did not seem particularly impressed by the accommodations, and did little to redeem themselves. The blond one noted that some souls seemed to be fading away, and asked about the large houses on the ridge at the edge of GreyTown.
The bus conductor's answer was "Urban Sprawl."

Sounds like the Great Divorce?
Is that right Angel, it was one that I never really got to grips with. Must give it another go at some point.

Not sure about the babes though - although that is a tricky point and I'm not going to dispute it here.

Lets hope your collective brains can come up with more. I've just finished my part of the Christmas special so I've no ideas at the moment.

yes, it is indeed 'The Great Divorce'

I liked it, once I got into it. Thought it might be ... applicable, here.

And the babes are not actually going *to* anywhere - they're just enjoying the journey, until someone legitimately claims them.
