Meanwhile, thousands of miles away in the Southern Hemisphere, Hilda Annersley and Nell Wilson had abandoned any attempts to get back to sleep. Copious quantities of coffee were consumed as the two sat silently considering the situation. Even before the first light of dawn could break, Nell rose to her feet impatiently.
“Let’s go for a drive, Hilda. I need a change of scenery. Perhaps that will help us think …”
Hilda was agreeable and the two women were soon flying through the quiet roads of Melbourne out towards the highway and finally on to the Great Ocean Road. They stopped at a viewpoint and stood staring out at the mighty expanse of water and the incredible rock formations towering out of the Pacific Ocean. It was a favourite trip, though one for which they rarely had time. Usually they commented on the sheer beauty of the panorama before them. Nell was always particularly impressed and was wont to lapse into geological speak as she plied Hilda with details of limestone, wave patterns and erosion. On this occasion however, as the Twelve Apostles rose majestically before them, each was consumed with her own private thoughts and as they looked further up the coast towards London Bridge, these turned towards home and England.

“Still no signal?” Nell was the first to speak.
“No, every time I try the number it’s dead.” Hilda continued to gaze out towards the horizon with unseeing eyes. Behind the calm front, her mind was working furiously trying to think of a rational reason, some grounds to explain why the CBBers had suddenly lost contact. She could not bring herself to believe the worst, the possibility that somehow her arch-enemy had escaped.
Nell glanced across at her with some concern. As every hour had passed she had become more and more convinced that that Elinor was behind this riddle. So far, she had not dared broach her fear with Hilda, knowing full well that it would be the one thing on earth likely to cause a setback to her recovery.
“Dammit!” she thought to herself. “Why this? Why now? Hilda’s improved remarkably over these past months. She’s resumed all her responsibilities, the new school is a resounding success and she’s finally at peace with herself. She’s only had a couple of nightmares in recent weeks. This is so unfair. Where’s the justice in this world? Oh Lord, please don’t let it be true.”

Casting up a frantic prayer, Nell walked across to Hilda who had pulled her cardigan closer round her shoulders, despite the morning sun promising a day of high temperatures. As she turned to speak, Nell was horrified by her appearance. In the space of just a few hours, Hilda seemed to have aged. Her harrowing experiences at the hands of Elinor had driven lines around her eyes and mouth. These had abated as she had returned to her normal weight and recuperated in the relaxed lifestyle of Southern Australia but now they had returned. The grey-blue eyes had darkened and once again Nell found herself looking at someone who has been subjected to extreme privation and suffering.
“Elinor is back” Nell could scarcely make out the words as Hilda spoke.
“It looks that way, yes” She moved to place her hands on either side of Hilda’s shoulders. “We’ll face this together, Hilda, I can promise you that much.”
Gently, Hilda released herself. “It may not be as easy as that, Nell.” Again her voice was painfully quiet. “We have to acknowledge that if Elinor has found a way out then she’s become stronger than we could ever have imagined. If that’s the case, then we don’t even know what we’d be combating. We must act with caution.”

“What do you have in mind?” Nell dreaded the response, fearful that Hilda might countenance the prospect of a return to Elinor’s dominion in return for the freedom of everyone else.
Noticing Nell’s trepidation, Hilda smiled wanly. “Don’t worry, Nell, surrendering myself is not at the top of my agenda. I’d rather die fighting and I’ll make damn sure, if it comes to it, that I fight down to my last ounce of strength. However, if it becomes the last resort, if it’s the only way to release those women then what alternative is there? One life in return for dozens? I would have no choice.”
Nell had to admit that Hilda was right, moreover she was intuitive enough to realise that Hilda would brook no debate on the subject. Privately she knew this was probably for the best and resolved to ensure that at all times Hilda’s mind was focused on a positive action plan, rather than brooding on what may never come to pass. ‘Better for her to be occupied so she has no time to dwell on the worst case scenario. The nightmares will return though, I may have to speak to Daisy about that …’

“Nell?” Hilda broke into her chain of thought. “There’s one thing I want you to know and I expect your complete discretion.”
“You know you don’t need to ask”
“I’m scared, Nell, not just frightened but petrified.” Hilda’s darkened eyes held Nell’s grey eyes as she bared her soul. “ I … I can’t even let myself consider the possibility of going back to that purgatory. I won’t attempt to hide it from you, we know each other too well.” She paused. “But I don’t want anyone else to see it. I don’t want any fuss, no objections when we fly to England. I’m as fit and healthy now as I’ve ever been and to show any weakness would be to submit to Elinor’s game plan, whatever that might be.”
Nell accepted the assumption that both women would return to the UK but one question remained in her mind.
“Hilda – what if it’s a trap? What if Elinor is using the CBBers as bait?”
“To be perfectly frank, Nell, I think you’re right. I have no doubt that Elinor’s prime motive is to resume her hold over me but we have to put that aside. Lesley and her friends need us and we have one advantage in that  we can prepare for an ambush.”
“Madge, Joey, Daisy … they won’t like it.”
“I don’t care, Nell. Lesley has put her life on the line for me, albeit unwittingly. The least I can do is return the favour. Elinor, this being, whatever it is, is pure evil. We have to stop it before more innocent people get hurt. I’m extremely troubled by Lesley’s situation. Her idea led to my escape and Elinor will not have forgotten that. If she fails to capture me, I suspect she will turn her attentions to Lesley, and those closest to her.”
Nell’s eyes widened as she realised the truth of Hilda’s words.

It must be an Australian- Elinor, I mean! How many non Aussies know that you need to drive down the Great Ocean Road (they're keen on greats in Oz, Great Dividing Ranges, Great Ocean Road, and I'm sure there's something else) Road to get to the Twelve Apostles? OK, I know myself, but I don't count cos I lived there!

Good installment, though I hate to say it...
Also hating to say it.. MORE!!!!

Please everyone notice that I was posting at other places at the time Elinor was posting this.

And for her ladyship's information, one little correction:

Quote:

You should have done your research better, lady. London Bridge has fallen down, and I mean that quite literally. It crashed into the sea years ago, leaving two stranded tourists on the remaining rock column. Lisa, no Aussies would have made that mistake (or at least no Victorians).

*LOL* I never thought it was. The style wasn't right. The areas I remember are - Dandenong, Endeavour Hills, Ballarat, Geelong, Sovereign Hill (there's a sweet shop there that did the most gorgeous boiled raspberry sweets I've ever tasted)...Er.. run out of steam now. Does Melbourne still have that strange shopping centre- the one with the old factory in a cone thing, and the shops wind their way aro0und the old building?

*come on Elinor*
*this is sheer cruelty- just as we'd recovered from Real CS!*

London Bridge is always falling down! There's a fairly famous song about it!

Could be an Aussie attempting to put us off the scent!

Actually I don't care who it is - just wonder what Elinor has in store for me! :o And I'd worked hard to get Hilda back to normal too!

Maybe we should all PM her in the hopes that she'll get so sick of wading through hundreds of messages, she'll reveal herself?

(Having said that, I wouldn't put it past her to completely ignore her message box!)

I think it will read them for the laugh, but ignore them to frustrate us humans.

I'm sure she won't respond, because that might give us all clues as to who she is. I don't think she minds being challenged - in fact she's probably laughing hilariously over it. May I make a suggestion, though? Let's not get personal over this. It's a story. If we have major things we'd rather she didn't bring up, perhaps PMing her and asking her to leave them alone is a good idea. After all, I'm sure her intention is to have fun and not to hurt anyone. Also, she is, and obviously has long been, one of us, and we don't want to hurt a friend, do we?

Absolutely!  Whoever it is has a brilliant imagination, and is putting it to very good use.  I'm loving every posting.  I would love to know who is writing as 'Elinor' as she *is* so good.  I am referring to two identities here.  The mysterious writer, and the entity of 'Elinor' who is wonderfully evil.

Agree, KB.  It is maddening not to know who's writing this but it's a fantastic piece of work and I hope that she will eventually come clean, either when it ends or before then.

Hmm, that's sort of what I meant when I asked earlier about wether or not we should treat 'Elinor' as just a pen name, or if we should equate the author of the drabble with the Character in the drabble.

I think it is just a pen name, as the taunting evil character in the story would not resist having a go at our responses and therefore I don't think we can treat whoever is writing as we did EBD_Herself for instance.

I'm still not sure I dare PM her and ask for my greatest fear to be ignored, but I hope she doesn't knpw/guess 'cos it's really not something I want to read about at the moment, so here goes,

Elinor, if you read this and do want to avoid a certain subject PM me and I'll let you know what it is and why to avoid it.

Carolyn, I don't think she will. I'm sure she wouldn't be so nasty as to bring it up if you told her about it, so I suggest you do write and tell her. After all, just as we have to be nice so as not to offend a friend, I'm sure she will still want to be friends with us when it's all over! And I'm sure she will reveal her true identity and bask in the praise from her story!

So, which one of you is it?

Have any of our Austrailians been asked for info recently that could have been used in this way?

I still think we should be able to work it out, but cannot guess, I'm now tempted to say Lesley, even though she denied it and had horribles happen to her. Let's face it, Elinor will have to include herself in the story or it will be too obvious, and therefore will have to write about something nasty happening to herself, so might as well get used to it straight away.

That afternoon, Hilda and Nell arrived at the Russell’s house. Already seated round the large dining room table were Madge, Joey, Daisy and several of the “old” teaching staff – Jeanne de Lachenais, Ruth Derwent, Rosalind Moore, Nancy Wilmot and Kathie Ferrars. Nell outlined recent events while Hilda stood at the window, gazing out at Madge’s pretty garden. She had decided in advance that she did not want the others casting surreptitious glances in her direction and the best way to mask her emotions was to keep her face turned. It was the right decision.
“Hilda – no!” Joey was the first to react, predictably.
“But cherie, what if it is really Elinor?”
“Is it wise, Hilda?” Ruth Derwent expressed their combined concern.
“There’s no other course of action.” Nell divined that Hilda did not trust herself to speak. “Someone needs to travel to England to find out what’s happened and it makes sense that it’s us. We’re got the best insight into how Elinor’s mind works and we’ve arranged tickets to fly out first thing tomorrow.
All eyes flew to the figure at the window.
“Hilda you can’t!” Joey was all eyes, a sure sign of nervous anxiety.
“Then what do you suggest, Jo?” Nell’s voice was brusque. “That we leave the CBBers to Elinor’s tender mercies?”
“But can’t someone else go? Surely we can contact someone who’s already in the UK?”
“There is no one else, Jo. Others can help, of course they can, but the only people with insider knowledge are Hilda and I. It’s not up for discussion …”

“No!” Madge was galvanised from the silence that she had perforce fallen into at the news.
“No?” Hilda repeated from the window.
“You can’t take the risk, Hilda. As your employer I forbid it.” Madge agreed with her sister and her outburst was spontaneous, if thoughtless.
Hilda whipped round from the window to take her place at the table. Only Nell discerned the muscle twitching in Hilda’s cheek as she clenched her teeth.
“You forbid it?” Hilda’s voice was dangerously measured. “Let me be absolutely clear, Madame, I am not requesting permission. Should you wish me to tender my resignation, I will do so immediately.”
Madge flushed, painfully conscious that she had over-stepped the mark. “Hilda, I’m sorry. What I meant was, it’s too soon, you shouldn’t be stretching yourself …”
“With respect, Madame, it may soon be too late. Ruth and Rosalind will be able to take care of the school in our absence. I have every confidence in their abilities. Ladies?”
Ruth Derwent and Rosaline Moore acquiesced immediately.
“One more thing. I do not wish word of this to spread through the school. You are all in our confidence and it is critical that it remains that way. No one else is to know of this. The more people that know, the more chance that Elinor discovers our plans – the school must continue as normal and the girls’ education must not be interrupted again.”

Post by Elinor on Nov 22nd, 2003, 8:49am
Madge consented reluctantly.
Across the table Nancy Wilmot and Kathie Ferrars were conducting a private conversation. Nancy looked up at her Head.
“Hilda, we’d like to come with you. I think we could help …”
Hilda smiled warmly at her juniors. “I’m pleased you’ve volunteered. If you hadn’t, I would have felt obliged to ask you. Ruth, you can spare them, can’t you?”
“Of course – we can juggle the classes round, no problem.”
“Madge, it’s possible that we may need to call other people to fly out at short notice. It’s unlikely and I hope that it proves unnecessary but I would like to know that I have your full support on that.”
Madge sighed. “All right, Hilda. All I ask, of all of you, is that you’re careful. Watch your backs and watch each others’ backs. I want you all to return in one piece.”
Those who would not be departing for England left the room to return to school duties. There were speedy farewells but the mood was far too serious to engage in lengthy partings and time was of the essence. Madge and Joey hugged Hilda affectionately and wished everyone “Godspeed”. Madge contrived to catch Nell’s eye with a stare that said everything and was relieved to receive a gaze of comprehension and reassurance in return. As she left, Daisy subtly slipped a small package into Nell’s hands.

The remaining four moved up to one end of the table to discuss plans in more detail.
“I take it we’ll need some assistance from the CBBers who haven’t attended the meeting?” asked Nancy.
“Of course” Nell pulled out a sheet of paper with a list of names and contact numbers. “We’ve drawn up a preliminary list – NickiL, Tassie_Ellen, Katarzyna, Xanthe, Chelsea – there’ll be more but for now it’s fairly comprehensive and once we’ve contacted them, they may know of others. We’ll ring them in a minute.”
“How do you think we can help?” Kathie got to the point.
“To be honest, Kathie, we don’t really know yet. We’ve got precious few clues to go on. When I spoke to Katherine and Rachael all they had was a sense that Lesley was acting strangely. Then we lost contact.”
“So do we just turn up at the venue where they’re having the meeting?”
“No, I propose we arrange a meeting with those CBBers. It’s possible that they know more or that they’ve got additional ideas to suggest. We will need to tread carefully so we will certainly not be storming the house as though it was the Bastille!”
“So for now we play it by ear?” Nancy sounded slightly incredulous.
“Unless you’ve got any better ideas?” Nell subdued her junior with a glare. “It’s a twenty four hour journey so there will be plenty of time to think.”
Kathie nudged her friend in the ribs and Nancy subsided, resolving to give the matter her best consideration so that she would have something practical to contribute to the meeting in England

May I suggest something? I'm not sure if you can get it on here, but my message boards on Proboards let you view the IP addresses of everyone. I'm sure there's some kind of IP search as well. Liss could get Elinors IP address, enter it into the IP search box in the Admion panel, and then see who it comes up with with the same IP as Elinor!
Although she may be one step ahead of us and will post on a different computer.

By the way, she's got me mixed up, I'm not going to be at the meeting. Or does she know something I don't? Now I AM scared!!!

I'll bet she really is laughing her head off about all the guesses going round here. I know I would be if it was me, but perhaps she's afraid she'd be attacked by the CBB-ers if she revealed her true identity!

I thought perhaps I was afe at home. Oh NO! You know what. I'm very suspicious of Xanthe. She isn't at the meeting and this may be because she doesn't want to get hurt!
BTW it's a very good point that you can be logged on as two different people at the same time. SO it could be anyone. You know, back to what I said about Xanthe, she hasn't been around alot and hasn't said anything about her not being the person (but I suppose she hasn't been accused.)

Title: Re: Real CS Epilogue, or Lesley's Nemesis  #2
Post by Elinor on Today at 8:36pm
At Newnham College, Cambridge, a small figure sat bolt upright in her bed. Waking in a cold sweat, Xanthe glanced at her alarm clock. It was still the early hours..
‘Funny’, she thought to herself, ‘I haven’t had a nightmare like that in years.’
Switching on her lamp and padding across to the small sink in her room, she filled a glass of cold water and drained it quickly. Then splashing her face and rubbing it dry vigorously she jumped back into bed and wriggled furiously until her toes were warm again. Comfy once more, she pondered the cause of the nightmare. Ever since she was a small child, Xanthe had nurtured an almost phobic fear of creepy-crawlies, particularly spiders, woodlice and generally anything that could scuttle quickly or become entangled in her hair. She had a vague recollection of a summer picnic when she had been playing hide and seek with her brother and sister. She had rather rashly chosen to conceal herself underneath a large pile of hay but had emerged screaming, trying to dislodge the small insects that had fallen down her t-shirt and lodged in her hair. Years later she was still inclined to balk at the very thought of this incident and was disposed to have flash-back nightmares during times of stress.
‘I wonder what caused it’ she mused as she turned over and snuggled under the duvet, purposefully leaving the light on so she could see any small movements in the shadows of the floor. ‘The concert went well, all my essays are up-to-date and I’m even ahead on all my reading so I’ve nothing to feel guilty about.’ Then she grinned to herself, ‘And I wonder how the CBB Gathering is getting on. I bet they’re having a whale of a time, the lucky blighters!’

Later that morning she tried Chloe’s mobile to get an update on the reunion. Strangely the phone was dead and Xanthe wondered idly whether the messaging service was down. However, as she had fully expected the entire party to yibble randomly into the small hours she was not unduly alarmed. ‘They’re probably all sleeping’, she thought complacently. Then, making her way to the P’Lodge, she checked the mail boxes and was pleased to see the latest copy of FOCS and, finally, her copy of Lesley’s “Headmistress”. Jigging a little dance of joy, she turned to hurry back to her room but was accosted by the Porter himself.
“Here, you’re Xanthe, aren’t you?” he said gruffly.
“Er, yes,” she said uneasily, whilst simultaneously racking her conscience.
“Well, you tell your friends not to be ringing leaving messages for you in the middle of the night. I’m not a bloody receptionist!”
“I don’t understand, what do you mean?”
“Here!” the Porter grumpily produced a scribbled note and handed it to the bemused Xanthe. “Friend of yours apparently. Rang in the middle of the night and was most put out that I couldn’t put her through to you. Said it was urgent. Well-spoken lady. Very sure of herself. Don’t you let it happen again or I’ll be putting a complaint through to the Warden.” With this final threat, he lumbered off back to his office.

Title: Re: Real CS Epilogue, or Lesley's Nemesis  #2
Post by Elinor on Today at 8:36pm
With eyes like saucers, Xanthe sped back to her room. Tossing the FOCS magazine and Lesley’s book on to the nearest chair, not without a wistful look at “Headmistress”, she uncrumpled the note and read it quickly. Seconds later she was flying back out of her room to the nearest telephone, dialling the number given on the note with trembling fingers.
“Miss Annersley, oh thank God, you’re there! What’s happened? Where’s Chloe? Is she OK?”
“Calm down, Xanthe, deep breaths, please” Hilda’s voice was commanding and Xanthe remembered, rather belatedly, that this was not the correct way to address the Head, even if Miss Annersley had never, strictly speaking, been Xanthe’s own Headmistress. She tried again, more meekly.
“Miss Annersley, I’m sorry. I’ve just got your message and I was frantic. Is … is everything all right?”
“As far as we know, Xanthe, your sister is safe, However, we have every reason to believe that Elinor has escaped and infiltrated the CBB gathering. We have had no contact from then since Saturday night and we fear that she is holding them all captive.”
Xanthe slumped against the telephone box and gripped the receiver tightly. “What can we do?”
“I’ve contacted you to invite you to a meeting to discuss that very question. Nell Wilson and I are arriving into Heathrow tomorrow morning and we’ve been ringing round those CBBers who we know were not at the meeting who we think can help us.”

The conversation continued in this vein while Xanthe took notes of the meeting venue at a secret location near Banbury railway station.  The British contingency was scheduled to arrive that night so the meeting could adjourn as soon as the others arrived. She rang off after agreeing to contact Katarzyna and LulieCat. Sprinting back to her block, she called in at one of her friend’s rooms to explain that she wouldn’t be available for netball practice and to cover her in the next day’s tutorials. Then, racing back to her room, she dragged out her rucksack from under the bed and began throwing essential items into it willy-nilly. As a Guider, this was accomplished with consummate ease and an observer would have seen her stuff a change of clothes, another change of clothes for Chloe, string, penknife, matches, water bottle … anything and everything that she thought might be of use. Then she checked her bus timetable and was relieved to see that she had time to make her calls.
“Katarzyna? Kat, it’s me, Xan …”
“Xan! Hi! How are you? I wasn’t expecting to hear from anyone so soon. What’s the news from the Gathering? I wish I could have been there but we were committed to Crufts. The dogs did really well, I was so pleased with them ….”
“That’s great, Kat, really it is, but we don’t have time for that, we’ve … we’ve got a problem …”
“What?” Kat had picked up on Xanthe’s urgency.
Xanthe explained as briefly as possible, ensured that Kat was committed to the meeting and bade a speedy goodbye before calling LulieCat. Then , hoisting her rucksack on to her shoulders, she locked her door and hastened to the bus stop where it dawned on her.
‘So that’s why I had nightmares” she reflected. “I may not have known Chloe was in trouble but I certainly felt it … there’s something to be said for gut instinct.” A dogged expression crossed her face and setting her chin firmly she marched towards the bus stop with determination.

Title: Re: Real CS Epilogue, or Lesley's Nemesis  #2
Post by Elinor on Today at 9:27pm
Back at the Gathering Elinor had not been present for some time and the CBBers had formed small coteries to discuss the situation. Coincidentally the Rach(a)els had gravitated together and Ray was holding forth to Rach, Rachel, Rachael and Cumbrian_Rachel. Ray was a seasoned reader and writer of fantasy and sci-fi and she had a theory that she was expounding to the others. Rachel had started it.
“It feels like we’ve been confined in here for hours but it’s still so dark. Does anyone know what the time is?”
No one did. All clocks and watches had stopped at the same time as their communication with the outside world.
“I wonder …” began Ray, staring thoughtfully at nothing in particular.
“Well, spit it out then!” Rach was impatient.
“Rachel’s right. It has been dark for hours and by rights it should be light outside by now. The fact that it’s not makes me think that Elinor is truly powerful. She may be holding us in some kind of time and space continuum. We can’t make any contact outside this building and presumably the outside world can’t contact us but that’s irrelevant in the short-term because everyone knows we’re here. Tomorrow will be a hindrance for her unless she’s managed to hold time … in which case no one will think to wonder where we are.”
Cumbrian_Rachel paled visibly and cast an anxious glance at her sister who had joined the group.
“What do you think, Rebecca?”
“Sounds feasible” replied Rebecca soberly. “But it begs the question, how long does she intend to hold us here? If her motive is vengeance, and there’s nothing to suggest otherwise, then it’s going to take some time to work her way through all of us.” She paused to swallow. “And once she has, will she just continue? Going through us, one by one, for infinity?”
She plumped down next to her sister miserably. As mathematicians, they could understand the implication of this only too well.

Across the room Lesley formed a group which also consisted of Carolyn, Pat, Sue and sundry others. Their conversation was following a similar course and the women were becoming dismally reconciled to the fact that their persecution could last indefinitely. Lesley had convinced herself that the whole set-up was a trap to ensnare Hilda Annersley and probably Nell Wilson as well and she would not be persuaded otherwise, sinking into a gloomy contemplation. Pat suddenly had a thought.
“Lesley, when you were in the car with Elinor, did she mention Hilda in any way that would suggest this was a trap.”
“No, actually she didn’t,” Lesley surprised herself. “I’ve convinced myself that it’s a trap but no, it was as if she had accepted Hilda had escaped and had turned her attentions to those that helped her. What are you getting at it?”
“Well, she told you she could read your every thought and clearly she could because she stopped you every time you tried to deviate from the route to here.”
“Yes, but I still don’t get it …”
“I think she’s made an error. I still think it’s a trap but if she’d been smarter she’d have found out exactly where Hilda and Nell are now. After all, Australia’s a big country. She could have read your mind but I don’t think she did. Don’t you see? She was too busy playing with you and enjoying her power. I don’t think she knows and that means she has no idea when, if ever they might turn up.”
“That’s all very well, Pat”, Lesley remained unconvinced, “But you’re forgetting that she can read our thoughts. She could pick any one of us and find out where they are in seconds.”

Title: Re: Real CS Epilogue, or Lesley's Nemesis  #2
Post by Elinor on Today at 9:31pm
Vikki and KB had been talking together in another corner and overheard this exchange.
“I’m not sure Lesley’s right” hypothesised KB. “She’s forgetting that Elinor has now assumed her own shape. She’s no longer ‘inside’ Lesley, or any of us for that matter. That must mean she can’t read our thoughts.”
Vikki took up the idea excitedly. “And if she can’t read our thoughts then we have an advantage, even if it’s only a small one!”
“We should have seen it earlier”, KB remonstrated with herself. “Remember how Lesley told us that she tried to drive into a lorry but Elinor had stopped her before she’d even moved? Then, when Ray made as if to confront her, she did manage to move. She may only have taken a step forward and Elinor reacted in a split second but the point is, Elinor had to react, she didn’t know what was coming in advance. By assuming a figure, she’s forfeited the ability to read thoughts!”
For the first time in what seemed like aeons, the two women felt hopeful. Continuing their discussion with some passion they were oblivious to the shadow which had fallen across the doorway, the shadow of Elinor herself who looked down on them with amused interest, listening intently. One by one, the other groups fell silent as they became aware of her presence and sat with increasing alarm as Vikki and KB continued their conversation. None were close enough to hear the exchange because it was conducted in low murmurs but it was painfully clear that Elinor herself was absorbed and relishing every word.

“There’s another thing,” this from Vikki, “Have you noticed how Elinor disappears immediately after ‘dealing’ with any of us?” She blanched at her own euphemism.
“Yes, I had rather wondered about that. I’d assumed it was just for effect.”
“I think it may be more than that, “ Vikki warmed to her theme. “I think that Elinor has to use a significant portion of her own power every time she taps into our fears and forces us to live them. It’s as though she can sense or sniff out our private terrors but has to give something of herself to make us actually undergo them. Then when she leaves, it’s as if she’s gone to regroup and gather her own strength.”
“But she comes back stronger each time. Haven’t you noticed how wraith-like her figure was when she first appeared but since then she’s become more solid, more tangible?”
“Oh, God!” Vikki looked at KB, consumed by a sudden dread. “You mean she’s feeding on our pain and suffering? That’s what’s fostering her power?”
Vikki felt a movement as she spoke and now looked to her side, only to stifle a scream as she met Elinor’s piercing gaze.
“Very enlightening, ladies”, there was a glacial edge to Elinor’s words, “Thank you for your elucidating observations. I regret that you will not be able to share them with your friends.”
Vikki and KB swapped panic-stricken looks before being stricken by an over-powering paralysis.

Turning to the others with a sneer, Elinor began to speak.
“It seems that despite my best endeavours some of you are continuing to resist my authority. Perhaps I have been too lenient or perhaps you all require additional tutoring. The two insurrectionists you see here must be punished. You will see that I have rendered them incommunicado. They can see and hear you, they can think and reflect upon their situation but they can not communicate with you. They can not move and they are effectively frozen in the positions you now see. They will be held here as a reminder to the rest of you.”
The CBBers looked stunned.
Ever the pragmatist, for one fleeting moment Liss cast her mind to the Chaletian Bulletin Board. Practically speaking, the temporary or permanent removal of its two chief yibblers would create extra space on the over-worked board ... Then, shame-faced, she gave herself a metaphorical shake for her uncharitable thoughts. If they were all going to get out of this predicament they would need to work together as a team, no brooding on trivial yibbles and quibbles.

I haven't read enough of Liss' own stuff to know if this is a possibility, only the Buffy x over which stopped.

It is certainly someone who  has paid a lot of attention to just about every thread on the board, and Liss doesn't post much, how much does she lurk, I can't say I've ever really noticed?

I had the same though about cambridge, but Xan has mentioned the term p'lodge frequently, and apart from the warden (?) the function of porters seems to be the same as at other uni's so that might not be such a giveaway.

I think using KB and Vikki for that role was great, horrible for them, but given their yibbling role they were the only people who could be given that role with the same effect.

As for Liss' thought, if this isn't Liss then someone is very brave...
