Title: Len meets the hikers!
Post by Rachael P on Jun 11th, 2003, 12:57pm
Len Maynard tossed back her chestnut curls with a flourish and glared at Roger Richardson.
"What do you mean, you've invited some hikers up for a drink?" she demanded. "We've barely got time to finish clearing out the house. For pity's sake, Roger, use your common sense, do! And most of the mugs and glasses are already packed so what do you propose we use?"
But Roger had already surmised that Len was a thoughtful, kindly soul who would never turn away a thirsty traveller. Grinning unrepentantly, he grabbed the bucket and headed for the old well to replenish their water supply, calling over his shoulder as he went, "I'm sure you'll think of something, Len - you always do!"

'That man puts far too much faith in me,' thought Len to herself as she pulled the picnic tumblers from their box, 'these will have to do, i'm not getting out any of the best china for some hikers!' Conlcued Len crossly.

Len shoved the perc. on grumbling crossly. "What's wrong Len?" asked Con, amused to see her elder triplet flustered and plainly cross. "Oh that Roger!" stormed Len. "He's only gone and invited a group of hikers up here for coffee, knowing full well we've packed most of the crocks. DO you think he uses his brain to think?"
"Who, Roger? No chance" was Ruey's verdict. She grinned broadly at Len. "However, he does know you're soft hearted and will make the hikers coffee".
Len relieved her feelings by pulling a hideous face at Ruey. Roger walked in, and Len ordered him to pick up the tray with the cups on, while she followed him with the percolator.

Roger wondered what the face was all about. He had come in just as Len had pulled a face at Ruey, and what a look she had given! He had never realised that someone as pretty as Len could look so ugly as she had in those few seconds.

The two friends walked down the path towards the hikers. Roger was every inch the overgrown schoolboy, dressed in old clothes that were too small for him and grinning to himself at Len's reserved demanour.

Len also looked very much the schoolgirl in her old, worn frock with dust marks across the skirt. However, she had an unconscious air of authority and poise that was distinctly older than her age and which was very attractive to others. With her long chestnut hair, hastily brushed off her face into a ponytail and her violet grey eyes, Helena Maynard was not beautiful in the conventional sense but she was a handsome creature. Over the past year or two, men had begun to glance at her twice and Jack had been wont to declare to Joey that it would not be long before she had suitors knocking at the Freudesheim door.

The hikers jumped up and swept of their hats. "Danke meine fraulien" they chorused, while one lept forward to take the percolator off Len. "It's all right, really" Len replied in German, smiling at the men. As she turned to go back to the house, one of the men said "no, wait! Stay and have a coffee with us". Len tried to polietly refuse, but the men were insistent. Glaring at Roger and metally calling him unholy names, Len sat down and accepted a cup which one hiker presented to her with a flourish.

(... this may not be relevant to the story but are they wearing lederhosen by any chance? ... there seems to be a general sweeping of caps and flourishing which smacks to me of short trousers, colourful braces and thigh-slapping .... just an image!)  :D

Rogers face was groing steadily more read as h trid to restrain his hysteria; he had been observing theman flirt with Len in German while len hurridle, but politely tried to refuse the gentleman.

Her dress, chosen on purpose for the hot and dusty work of cleaning out the old chalet, was one she had rather severely outgrown, and Len was acutely conscious of the warm glances the men were increasingly openly directing at her shapely legs.  Roger himself, looking at her body as if for the first time through a stranger's eyes, was taken aback by what he saw....

Her legs were smothered in a violently red rash! No wonder the hikers couldn't help staring. Len herself reached down to scratch her calf and noticed it for the first time. A thought flashed through her mind - could this be infectious? Would this mean the hikers, in their glorious lederhosen and feathered hats, would have to stay around in quarantine?

(Rebecca, you're a naughty, naughty girl!)

Luckily (and isn't it always the way ;)) one of the hikers was a doctor during the hikers' off-season and promptly offered his assistance. Len, her face the colour of the rash on her legs, agreed, and the two disappeared behind a convenient bush.

Con, who had come to find out what was taking so long (it has been a week since they went down there, remember!), caught a glimpse of the handsome young doctor as he and her sister vanished and wondered if Reg would come in time to stake his claim, or whether, by the time he realised (in a few books' time) it would be too late...

Title: Re: Len meets the hikers!

*I'm the naughty one?!*

Con, understandably confused, asked for an explanation. Roger, his face as black as thunder, explained the situation, resentful of the fact that as he knew nothing of medicine, he was unable to assist Len.

(If you hadn't started it, I would never have been able to continue it.)

At that moment, the two emerged, Len hastily pulling down her short skirt, her hair untidy. The doctor's face was flushed and he looked suspiciously pleased with himself.

"All serene," Len announced in shaky tones. "Just heat rash, from what Doctor Benson says." She glanced from her sister to Roger. "Is something wrong?"

Title: Re: Len meets the hikers!
Post by ariella on Jun 19th, 2003, 1:53pm
"Roger was just getting a bit flustered by the doctor's att......... ouch!" finished Con in a yelp as Roger stepped on her foot.

"So," one of Doctor Benson's friends, currently lying on the ground of Con's feet, drawled lazily, "when's the wedding?"

Title: Re: Len meets the hikers!

At this remark a very angry Roger flung what was left of the coffee at his visitors.

Title: Re: Len meets the hikers!
Post by Rebecca on Jun 19th, 2003, 2:09pm
Len flushed and tore back to the chalet, pursued by Con and Dr. Benson. Roger, with no one left to restrain him, vicously kicked the prone hiker, causing him to exclaim loudly.

"What was that for?"  demanded that personage, rubbing his bruised side with an air of deep injury.

"That girl is -- was -- is -- she --" raged Roger incoherently.  "She's very -- well, not to put too fine a point on it, she's very special, and I -- your friend seems to have -- well, violated her."

Title: Re: Len meets the hikers!

"Well, all I can say is that she doesn't seem to have minded too much," replied the injured, insolent personage.

'Why you....' growled Roger as he launched himself at the unfortunate hiker.

Title: Re: Len meets the hikers!

Roger was tall and well-built but the hiker was thin and wiry (no, not Matey in disguise) and easily evaded his charge. Roger continued his run, unable to stop, and finished up stuck in the branches of the bush Len and Dr. Benson had hidden behind. Unable to free himself, he stood trapped and feeling stupid, while the other hikers, unable to contain their mirth, attempted to release him.

Meanwhile, back at the house, Len was having a very uncomfortable interview with her mother, while Dr. Maynard and Dr. Benson [any relation of the other Doctor Benson?]  talked shop over a couple of cigarettes in the study.

Title: Re: Len meets the hikers!

Con, with her usual lack of tact, had quickly blurted out to Jo all that had taken place and now Jo was trying to understand Len's part in it. Secretly Jo was quite startled to find that her "babies" were growing up quite so much as they were.

Roger, now freed from the bush, raced back to the chalet. Hearing male voices coming from the study, he flung the door open, and before either man could do anything, he delivered a fierce right hook to Dr. Benson's jaw, knocking him to the floor. There he lay, still, grey, and to all appearances, dead.

Jack Maynard rose from his ample leather armchair and, hastily ascertaining that Doctor Benson was merely stunned by dint of checking the pulse at his temple, stepped over the recumbent body to confront Roger.

"After all that we have done for you and your brother and sister -- protecting you from you crackpot father, taking you in and caring for you under the same roof as our own children -- how dare you assult a guest of mine in my own home?"

"He -- he -- " Roger began to stammer again with emotion and embarrassment -- "he d-d-DEFILED your daughter Len, sir.  Forgive me if I've -- if I've trespassed on your hospitality, but I should have th-thought that any HONOURABLE man would avenge a-- a-- a despicable act like that!"

Jack glared at him coldly.  "You're a fine one to talk about honour,  my lad -- much less accuse another man of trying to defile my womenfolk.  Do you think I haven't seen the way you look at my wife?"

(I should have known that was coming Raya!)

Roger opened and shut his mouth. He seemed incapable of speech.
"Well at least you've got the grace to blush" Jack snapped, as the colour flooded Roger's face. "And please close your mouth. You look like a stranded codfish".

Joey gave a queer gasp, took one step towards the fallen man and promptly fell to the floor, quivering like a duck's feather!

(This made me guffaw out loud, Clare!)

Jack looked rather helplessly at the three victims laid out on the floor.  Stepping over the bodies of the two men, he gathered Joey's twitching form into his arms, and went out into the hallway to seek his daughters.

"I'd like the full story of what happened here please, starting with you sir" he said, nodding towards the doctor who had 'examined' Len in the bushes. Roger looked furious, but a look from the doctor quelled him sufficiently to allow the other man to speak.
Dr Benson started. "Well, it all began when we met this chap here, and asked if he knew where we could buy coffee from..."

Dr Benson gawped at the older man in open admiration. Imagine being strong enough to pick up a hefty lad like Roger and chuch him around anyhow! he thought wistfully. Now, if he could only do that, he could just throw Len over one shoulder and do a runner with her!

Title: Re: Len meets the hikers!

But of course, it was only appearances, which was very handy since Chaletians didn't usually worry about little details like dead people lying around. The guy who is supposed to be dead found it a very convenient vantage spot for spying and eavesdropping.

Ingenious excuses for not going to camp provided for a small fee!

Jennie snickers and sits back to wait for the commissions to flood in.

If I'd been guessing, I'd have said Bristolian m'self - I hear that construction all the time from the natives (and use it myself when I think I can get away with it!)

Ray *bristolian but never allowed to sound native*

Why are you never allowed to sound native?  I'm an "incomer" to Brizzle, married to a native, surrounded by them at work and I love the accent!

Elaine *who knows she has lost her own accent, because it comes back when she's on the phone to her mother*  :)

Something to do with being middle class. When I was little, if I came out with anything remotely Bristolian sounding I used to get a small clip round the ear and a "You will not sound like that in this house!" from whichever parent caught me. Which probably sounds worse than it was - I wasn't around a lot of very Bristolian people so it wasn't as if I had anyone to really pick it up from so it didn't happen very much. The amusing thing is I learned more Bristolian at the exclusive, fee paying secondary school than I did at the state run primary school!

And then I had to learn it - or at least learn how to moderate the 'posh' from my voice - when I took a job in a taxi office on the edge of the local council estate. You tell them "I'm terribly sorry but we don't have any available taxis," they respond: "Y'wot?" If you tell them "No we ain't got'ny  taxis," they respond: "Oh - right. Sound." (Go figure.)

But my mother still doesn't like it if I use native constructions (she's not yet said 'I like to hear pure spoken English', but I suspect she and Madge might have got on well) and I mostly only do it for effect.

Which bit of Bristol?

Ray *being nosy*

Which bit of Bristol?  Downend - which is South Gloucestershire really!  What about you?

But I'm originally from Cork, so I get very sing-song on the phone to my mum.  (A Dublin comedian once said that Cork people even say "hello" as if they're asking a question!)

Elaine *who should really be working, but finds CBBing far more fun for some reason. . .*

I work just down the road from you in Kingswood, although I live in Henleaze (which is the other end of Muller Road/Fishponds Road, within the city boundaries and a real delight to commute from, really it is...I love Muller Road*. Honest...).

Ray *who ought to be doing a lot of things but definitely finds the CBB more fun!*

*For those not acquainted with the vaguries of Bristol and its geography, Muller Road is one of the busiest roads in North Bristol. It's also very long. It's also got *pauses to count* at least seven sets of traffic lights of one sort or another on it. It's also got the main North Bristol bus depot on it. All this combines to make it an extremely tedious road to have to drive along and I'd avoid it...except that it's the only direct route from North West Bristol (where I live) to North East Bristol (where I work)...

Just remember to keep clear of  deep holes covered with leaves, and the darkest parts of the lake, Chloe.

If Xanthe hasn't arranged for someone with a golden voice to go with you, she shouldn't be running a Brownie camp. I told you I could provide you with good excuses, didn't I?

Putting the 'posh' back can be *very* effective too.  I've lost it for day-to-day, expecially working in an FE college in Barnsley (for those outside the UK, the heart of what used to be the Yorkshire coalfield).  However, some years ago, when my husband was in the RAF, and I was in the Wives Club run on camp, we had an officers wife who used to look down on non-commissioned men's wives more than most.  (The women flet their husband's ranks worse than the men! ::)).  I wheeled out my public school accent, and she very soon stopped doing it to me! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Meanwhile oblivious to his wife's treachery, Jack was still trying to track Roger with Bruno.  Unfortunately it began to snow, leaving Jack feeling very cold, and rather lost.

On accents, I still have trouble, 6 years after leaving an English school! Best example is water. Might not sound like much, but in Belfast it's pronouced 'woder' rather than 'wat-ter'. If I ask for the latter in just about any Belfast fast food place, they look at me blankly and go 'Coke?'. On one occassion I asked for 'wat ter' four times, with the assistant going through every soft drink in the book. I eventually got fed up and plumpled for Sprite!
But being able to switch on a posh accent can be VEEERRRY handy!  ;)

Xan's going an although her voice is wonderful it's not golden quiet yet, and anyway i'm back now and did not fall in any deep holes covered by leaves and was not near a lake.

Chloe, Xan, you really disappoint me. Surely if there weren't any opportunities to behave like real CS girls, you could have made them. No mountains? No streams to fall into?

Oh dear. Never mind, perhaps by the next time you take them camping, the authorities will have done better and altered the camp site.

The walk from the bottom site up to the top to go to the shop was enough of a trek (and that hill feels like a mountain even if it's not) thanks very much.

A weekend blissfully free from CSesque adventures, though all the other Leaders thought we were missing a Brownie on Saturay evening, when in fact she was washing some glue-pots for me... I walked into the hall to be accosted by an agitated QM saying "do you know where Georgina is?" to which I replied "yes, if she's not in here" and went off to get her.  (As cool as the proverbial cucumber).

One of the Brownies did manage to get stung by a wasp an hour before we went home, but she was very brave about it and luckily it wasn't a hornetesque episode or anything (not that a fleet of dashing doctors would have been summarily turned away had they come to our aid...)

*apologises for the OTing*

After wandering around in the snow for at least five minutes. Jack decided he had no alternative. He was going to have to eat the dog.

First problem, how do you slaughter a giant St Bernard that is watching you with a look of deep distrust and refusing to lie down and offer a jugular vein to the small sharp pebble you managed to dig out from under the snow?

Looking round Jack saw...

Jack gasped as he looked at the figure standing in the snow over him.

Meanwhile, Len, annoyed by her father's disappearence, happily accepted Dr Benson's invitation to go back to his place.  Leaving her brothers and sisters behind, for fend for themselves for once, she looked forward to a little bit of excitement.

However, she was unprepared for the scene that met her on arrival at the secret location.  First of all she was shocked to see her mother there, she had been hoping for a little private time with Dr Benson, and her mother always seemed to interfere.  But the vision of he mother without her hair, knocked her back unlike anything else.
