Title: Jo's dilemma
Post by Kelly on Dec 18th, 2003, 7:45pm
Well I've started this thread again. I'm going to repost the story as its not archived anywhere.  ;D
Hopefully *cross fingers* we won't have any more thread eating problems!!!

**********************************************************************************

Joey sat on the large window seat of her sisters pretty summer home at St Scholistika’s looking out at the brilliant blue of the shining Tiernsee, her delicate face alight in the beauty. Though no one could have called her pretty, she was not lacking in character with her sensitive eyes and mouth which had made many people stop to look at her though they could not quite say why. With her thoughts elsewhere Joey did not see the shadowy figure approaching the house from around the path that wound from the Chalet School to St Scholastika's, nor did she hear the sound of the steady tap - tap at the front door. Downstairs Rosli, Madge’s faithful maid, stirred form her duties in the kitchen and approached the door, while dusting her floury hands on her large white apron. Wondering who would be calling at such a late hour with only the young Fraulein Bettany home she opened the door with the pretty Tyrolean greeting of “Gruss Got”.

Earlier that day:
Madge Russell sat in the comfortable Salon, when her husband Doctor Jem Russell, head of the Sonnalpe-Sanatorium in Tyrol entered the room with a worried air.
“You look terrible Jem” cried Madge jumping to her feet, an anxious look spreading over her face
“It’s not one of your patients is it?” she asked hurriedly trying to subdue the feeling of dread creeping up inside her.
Leading his wife gently by the arm he sat her down in one of the pretty wickerwork chairs which graced the rooms of their Summer home in the old St Scholastika’s school.
“Madge” he said gently, “you’re going to have to be very brave”. Raising her eyebrows at this, she went deathly pale. “Tell me Jem, I must know, what’s happened, is it Joey or Robin, ... oh please not Joey” she wailed looking into his eyes “I just couldn't take it if anything had happened to Joey”.
Jem shook his head, but many months later, he would regard his wife's questions with a grim Irony as he remembered the horror deep-set within her at the thought of something happening to her younger sister.
“No Madge, its not Joey or the Robin, but I’m afraid its not good news”
As he spoke the first words Madge visibly relaxed but at the second the worried look retuned. She went to speak but he continued
“Gottfield Mensch mentioned something to me today which is why I’m home early its going to affect you very personally I’m afraid”
“Madge, you’ve not looked too well recently and I’ve been so busy with my patients that I haven’t noticed it”
Glancing up guilty Madge coloured slightly and then bent over as a cough racked through her, leaving her momentarily breathless. Jem’s worried look returned as Madge sat panting for breath.
“My dear, I’m going to have to take some more tests, but from what I’ve seen I think you’ve been experiencing this trouble for more than a short while, I only wish you’d said something sooner”
Madge sat with her head bowed wringing her hands in horror as she listened to what her husband implied. “Jem, oh Jem, do you think . . . Oh, I don’t have . . . “ she stammered before she burst into tears leaning back into her husbands arms.
Jem sat stonily, his expression beginning to melt into one of pure compassion for his wife, he hated to see the woman he loved like this.
Speaking slowly he said “I’m afraid that's what I do mean Madge” as he reviewed his thoughts and Gottfields pronouncement that Madge was suffering from the dreaded white mans scourge.
Only a few days earlier that week had Madge been up at the Sanatorium where hearing her cough, Doctor Mensch had bade her sit while he conducted several tests confirming his initial diagnosis.
Realising that tears would help to relieve the shock from Madge’s system, he sat holding her until her sobbing approached hysterics. Getting up from his perch on the settee Jem produced a glass, brandy and a sedative which he proceeded to administer to Madge,.
After seeing Madge swallow the lot, despite her dislike of spirits as did Joey, he led her up the stairs to bed and sat by her side until he saw her safely asleep.

Feeling weak Jem descended the stairs only to be pounced upon by his young sister in law who demanded to know why he looked like a “wet blanket“ in her most ungracious of tones.
Sensing a more serious note to his manner she asked more subtly what was wrong but Jem only shook his head declining her an answer, leaving the young Miss Jo infuriated and rather disheartened on the stairs in response to his heated and rather snappy response.
“There are a lot of things to worry me at the moment Josephine, I’d rather you try to be less impetuous and not move around like a young elephant if you please. There are others in this house apart from yourself and I'd see you remember it”
After which he descended the stairs leaving a bewildered Jo to listen as he drove off speedily in his car towards the San.

Joey slowly walked down the stairs wondering what could have put the usually cheerful and placid Jem into such a foul mood. Not stopping to change her shoes Jo wandered out into the garden and perched herself on the pretty white swing-seat in the summer garden. Leaning back and pulling up her knees to her chin Joey reviewed the days events, but ended up none the wiser in regard to what she had done wrong.
However she was not to sit in her melancholy for long as her young adopted sister Marya Cecilia Humphries affectionately known as the Robin ran out of the house, her pretty curls flying as she ran to Joey and flung herself headlong knocking Joey out of her seat and onto the ground.
“Zoe, Zoe, where have you been” she demanded, once Joey had picked herself up off the ground laughing while dusting off her now somewhat sadly soiled skirt.
“I’ve been here all along Robinette, and what made you in such a hurry” she demanded with mock severity “just look at the mess you’ve made of my skirt”
Giggling wildly Robin grinned at Joey who joined in with the shouts of laughter and for the time being the pair sat rocking with laughter.
When more composed Joey asked seriously “what did you want me for Robin?” as she glanced at the small young girl before her for whom she had a deep love.
“Oh nothing really” replied Robin easily “just that Rosli told me that I must ask you to help me with the babies as Aunty Madge . . . I mean Madge” stumbled the Robin as she was still shy about addressing her guardians by their Christian names “ is feeling tired and has gone to bed”
Realisation began to dawn on Joey as to the cause of Jem‘s heated response to her earlier that day, and she began to worry as it was very unusual for Madge to go to bed during the day unless she was under immense pressure or unwell. “When did you find that out Robin?” she asked thoughtfully. Not waiting for a response she continued unconsciously to think out loud “Jem never told me anything about Madge being unwell, though it may explain why he was so awful this morning” she pondered.
“what do you mean Joey, what did U ... ah, I mean Jem do, is Tante Guido sick?”
Realising just what she had said and not wanting to alarm her young adopted sister Joey laughed it off “oh nothing to concern you bubchen, was just Jem annoyed at me for being too loud in the house” she replied somewhat truthfully but with a appalling disregard for grammar that would have had her Miss Annersely down on her in a flash had she heard. “I’m sure Madge is just fine, you must try to remember to call her that now you know!” Jo joked her eyes twinkling.
Giggling Robin put her hand up to her mouth, her eyes wide as she realised what she had said.
With her heart heavy but outwardly cheerful Jo set off for the house with Robin, arms linked as she skipped along hiding her feelings and suspicions as best she could, for fear had taken hold of her as the nagging feeling she had had for the past weeks suddenly came to fruition.

After spending a tiring but thoroughly enjoyable morning helping Rosli to bathe the babies and set them down in the nursery to play Jo and Robin sat talking in their pretty sitting room with its creamy yellow walls and fresh floral cretonne curtains that rippled lazily in the breeze at the large paned french windows helping to cool the room from the stifling summer heat. Jo sat curled up on the settee, while Robin lay sprawled out on one of the colourful rugs which lay on the highly polished floors of the room.
Speaking quietly as Madge’s room was just down the hallway Robin proceeded to explain to Joey the antics of the babies in the nursery whilst she was helping to tidy the bathroom of the wild splashing the children had created earlier in the day.
Aglow with excitement for it was not often that Robin was allowed to bathe the babies due to her delicate health she lay rolling around trying to stifle the giggles which continued to overtake her as she remembered Joeys soaked form and the young lake which had replaced the bathroom floor.
“Ohhhhhhh Jo you should have seen them” she cried clutching her side “Sibil got so angry, her hair was flying around her but she had forgotten it was so wet and the drops flew everywhere just like your Rufus” she explain hysterical laughter overtaking her again.
Laughing herself Jo rolled moved into a more comfortable position
“But Robin what were they doing exactly to get Sibs into such a state, though it doesn't take much to raise that red haired temper of hers, I simply can‘t see what would have provoked her”
Thinking back over the incident Robin sat quietly trying to remember but every now and then the silence was punctuated with giggles as she remembered the antics of the small nursery folk. While Joey had been cleaning up the mess in the bathroom, she with the help of Rosli had escorted the children to the nursery where they were to be put into fresh clothes for the afternoon having soiled their other clothes earlier that morning upon the delightful find of the properties of mixing soil from the garden and water from the outdoor tap. Upon producing their clothes they had been cleaned and tidied and returned to a somewhat civilized state they romped round the nursery making such a racket that they had to be hushed immediately so as not to wake Madge.
“But that’s the funny thing Zoe” she answered “I don’t know what started it either, one minute they were all playing happily and the next . . . well the next she was in a rage”
“like a bear with a sore paw!” agreed Jo “Don’t worry yourself over it Rob though I don’t really think you are” she said looking at Robin who was trying to control her laughter once again “I’d say its just the heat getting to her, I’ll mention something to Jem when he gets home and he’ll soon deal with that young lady” she replied trying to attain a serious looking but failing abysmally.
“I can never but never forget your face Jo” she continued with one of the turns of speech which reminded Joey of the Robins ancestry and her little Polish mother, “and I spose I should not really be laughing at Sibs getting so wound up, but she was just such a sight I couldn’t help myse----”
All of a sudden the sound of a car winding down the road ebbed into the quiet room cutting the Robin off in mid speech, as Joey tensed and jumped to her feet running to the French windows to glance out at the car pulling up to the house.
Robin, noticing a change in Joeys countenance, sat up from her position on the floor and glanced curiously at her wondering what had caused this sudden transformation in her mood.

Jem walked towards the house his heart heavy at the thought of what was to come in the following weeks. Opening the front door he strolled in trying to keep a leisurely appearance and headed up the stairs where he was met by a pale faced Jo. Realising that something was amiss he immediately thought of Madge but seeing the questioning look on Joeys face he realised that it was only that she suspected something was wrong and he knew had something had happened she would have contacted him instantly. Leading Jo by the arm he directed her into his study and sitting her down he asked
“What's wrong old girl, you look a bit pale, is the hot weather getting to you again” he questioned not wanting to alarm her with news of Madge had she not been suspicious
“What's wrong with Madge Jem, I know something is up” she exclaimed fixing him with a serious glance of her black pansy eyes
Leaning back in his chair Jem took a deep breath and made a quick prayer for help before he answered slowly
“I can’t really tell you much yet Jo, I’m afraid, I’ve promised to talk it over with Madge herself first and I think she would like to be there when you are told”. He leant forward as a look of anger spread across her face but sat silently waiting for her to reply
“How could you” she stammered finally, “if something is wrong with Madge I need to know, how long have you been keeping this from me” she demanded a pink flush rising in her cheeks.
Seeing she was getting worked up Jem replied sharply his voice penetrating through her anger making her realise the unreasonableness of her behaviour “I think you need to think of Madge here Joey, if you really are as concerned as you say then I think you’ll realise that you are acting rather unfairly” he glanced at Jo taking a deep breath and then continued “She is going to need all the love and support you can give her over the next few months, perhaps even longer. Now, I not going to lie to you by saying that she is fine and that everything will be alright but what I am going to tell you is that she should pull through this, with the best possible medical care and doctors she has a very good chance. I want you to pray to God for her to ask for His help” Jem paused again seeing his words sink in.
Joey flushed again, this time in embarrassment for her own angry behaviour. Jem continued “I know that this is going to be hard for you, but it is going to be even harder for Madge. I’ll tell you this though Jo she is going to have to go away for treatment and so you are going to have to do without her, Mollie and Dick are coming back early from India to take care of their two (is it two or three?) and David and Sybil, whilst Robin will be going back to school, which will leave you to care for yourself”.
Seeing a rebellious look of indignation spread over her face he continued giving her a glare “I know Jo, I know you are capable to look after them all yourself but I do everything for a reason. Don’t you see that it is going to enough for you to cope with Madge’s illness and be a companion for her. You can’t be in two places at once and it would unreasonable for me to expect you to be”.
Again sensing the truth in his words Jo was silenced into submission and they both sat silent for the next few moments to collect their thoughts.
Joey sat feeling like the world had collapsed around her, her fairly sheltered existence had never made it seem possible to her that her sister was not invincible also, and she felt guilty for all the worry and attention she had lavished upon the Robin whom she had until this point feared for the most. In all her concern for her little adopted sisters health she had never once stopped to think that others in her life may also be unwell and her single minded even selfish attitude was brought home to her, even though it had been her best attentions at heart. Thinking back over the years she remembered all the worry she had put on her sister, now reviewing the events her heroic feats no longer seemed so much so, as she was hit with the reality of how her sister must have felt on all those occasions and the stress and worry it must have caused her. Perhaps it was her fault Madge was ill she began to think. Panic rising in her, thoughts began to run through her mind, different reasons for Madge to be ill, was it her fault, had it been something she had done, why hadn‘t she noticed. As she sat thinking the colour once again drained from her face and Jem seeing the change in Joeys expression and taking it as shock, rather than the guilt it really was he clasped her hand and took her pulse, sitting with her in silence until some of her normal colour returned to her deathly pale face. Still in silence he administered her a dose to help her remain calm and led her slowly upstairs to bed where he bade her stay until he returned later in the afternoon.
When they reached the door of her room Joey turned and motioned for him to leave and thinking that the girl needed time to think things over he released her and turned to walk down the hallway. After taking a few steps a thought hit him and turning around he saw Jo still standing motionless in the doorway her arms limp by her sides.

Turning around Jem hurried back towards Joeys side and placing a hand on her shoulder in a gesture of guidance and reassurance he went to lead her into her room. The shock of his touch broke through the trance-like static state which had held her in its invisible grip and involuntarily a small cry escaped her lips. Although quiet it was shrill and echoed up and down the long hallway. Eyes wide Jo stumbled back rendered confused not knowing how she had come to be in the hallway, last remembering herself to be in Jem’s office where he had told her of Madge being sick, the events did not seem to piece together. As her mind adjusted a door burst open accompanied by a patter of feet and Madge ran out clad only in her nightdress and dressing gown her feet bare on the cold wooden floor. Seeing Jo crouched in the corner of the hallway she shot a glance at Jem who only nodded in confirmation, moving toward Joey she opened her arms and the girl ran into them.

Feeling a lump rise in her throat Jo tried to bite it down, but the more she tried the harder it seemed to be to control herself. Tears started to spring into her eyes when she suddenly heard a voice start to speak in the back of her mind “this is going to be hard for you, but it is going to be even harder for Madge” - Jem’s words earlier that day. Realising that if she cried she would put Madge through even more worry she managed to choke down her feelings and suppress the tears which were threatening to overtake her. Pulling herself together she realised that she was still crouched in the hallway with Madge’s arms around her. Looking up Joey gazed in the delicate now increasingly fragile face of her sister and struggling produced a somewhat watery smile, but a smile non the less. Seeing even a flicker of a smile on Jo’s face Madge’s worries were again put to rest and she appeared satisfied at the girls effort realising that she would be fine now she had come to accept the fate which had befallen them all.
“Joey baba” Madge whispered, using the comforting epithet she often addressed her younger sister with “are you alright now?”
Seeing Jo nod and sensing that she had come to some sort of peace with the small amount of information she had been given. Madge stood, still clasping her Jo’s arm within hers
“It’s time you and I had a little chat, I see you’ve already digested your previous shock so I think you ought to know the full details . . . or” she continued after a pause “all that you need to know for the present”.
Turning to her husband Jem smiled at her showing he gave his approval.
“Madge why don’t you go and get dressed and then you can use my study” Jem said knowing that the pair would like some privacy “Rob an’ I will have lunch downstairs, or no!” he said a smile spreading over his face “we’ll have a picnic in the garden, its such a hot day we don’t want to be crammed up indoors and I’m sure it will do the babies good and Rob too, I‘ll go grab the basket!”
Knowing the enormous appetite of her husband and the growing children Madge laughed raising her eyebrows in mock disbelief “I think you’ll require more than one picnic basket my dear! If I’m not mistaken that wont go anywhere the way you eat! and what’s this about grabbing the basket, surely you don‘t think its always full ready and waiting“ Madge laughed her bell like tones echoing around the hall ”Jo you run down and help Rosli to pack Jem and the children a couple of baskets, make sure she includes a flask or two of lemonade, some fruit and oh!” she exclaimed remembering her youngest child “some cloths to keep the babies tidy, we don’t want another repeat of the last picnic”
The last picnic the family had been of was forever to be remembered as an example of what not to do! The juice from the peaches, apples and other succulent fruit had managed to make a mess of the whole party, not only had several good frocks and shirts been absolutely ruined but the untidy group had had to walk back to the house past numerous tourists not to mention Mademoiselle with sticky fronts. Although Mademoiselle had only smiled kindly after being explained their predicament Madge was highly embarrassed and nervy the whole way home lest some of the pupils of the Chalet School see their headmistress in such a disgraceful mess! Fortunately the worst had not happened and she was not seen by any of her students though the pretty summer dress had to be re-dyed while Sibils was only fit for the rag bag due to its other exploits that day.
Joey headed down the stairs to the kitchen where she went to seek out Rosli to pack the picnic baskets. Once she disappeared Madge lost her calm composure and collapsed into tears upon seeing how badly affected her younger sister had been by the news she was ill. Jem standing opposite Madge headed towards her and led her gently by the arm back into the bedroom. Sitting down on the bed Madge rested her head on Jem's shoulder and once again was overtaken by sobbing.
Knowing her fragile health could not take anymore emotional outbursts Jem turned his plans over in his mind and decided on the next step must be.

Moving gently Jem turned around to face his wife
“Madge darling everything will be alright you’ll see”
Her eyes wide Madge stared at him indignation rising in her cheeks, turning to disbelief and then realising she was defeated she hung her head.
Deep down Madge knew that Jem's kind words were only that. She knew that they possessed little or no truth, and while she would have loved to be naive enough to believe him she could not. Madge remembered the hours she had spent trying to imagine the future, but somehow she could not see it, she could not see past the next week let alone the next months and possibly years. She had meant to ask Jem what would happen, what treatment she would be receiving and so on but she also knew that he would not tell her in the hope of protecting her from the horrors ahead. With a grim laugh inside Madge thought how ironic it was that since she had married how she had become a subservient woman, inferior to her husband, subject to his wishes, her whole existence was based around his life, needs and wants. With the unspoken prospect of death ahead Madge could not help but feel her life had been a waste. Although she had chosen to leave the Chalet School to become a wife and mother she was unsure that she had really been ready for the sacrifices the change would entail. Although loving and kind, Jem apparently seemed to view her as unable to think for herself and his treatment cast her more in the position of a child than as an independent grown woman. Her life brought home to her suddenly made her realise how vital it was that she warn Joey, if a warning it must be, on the realities of adulthood. She knew Jo would be content to say a child forever and although Madge knew she would never totally lose her childhood spirit she would not survive without the grim truths of life.
Till the present Jo had been brought up in the safe, secure and idealistic environment of the Chalet School, which although had provided her with excellent training in most aspects, was left wanting in dealings with the outside world. Madge knew that outside the bubble that was the Sonnalope and School, there were not such high moral values and emphasis on truth and honesty.
As she tried to speak after a long silence Madge found she could not form the words she wished to say. Jem seeing this, decided that Madge was in no fit sate to speak with Jo.
Seeing her into bed once again despite her protests he bade her stay until he allowed her up. Knowing that it was unwise to administer more than one sedative per day to someone with delicate health Jem hoped that Madge would drift off to sleep without dwelling on things too much. As he headed to the door and drew the blinds to darken the room he glanced lovingly at his wife but could not help the worry lines which creased his forehead as a feeling of apprehension and worry filled him once again.

Walking out the bedroom he was accosted by Jo whom having organised the picnic with Rosli was on her way upstairs again to speak with her sister. Jo headed to the door and made an attempt to walk pass Jem, stopping her he put out his arm and put his fingers to his lips motioning for silence.
Realising what Jem was meaning Jo sighed and stepped away
“What's wrong Jem, has Madge had another attack?” she asked in a hushed whisper thinking that the cause of Madge’s trouble was a bad bilious attack.
Shocked Jem realised that Jo had still not been informed about the cause of Madge’s illness and although he had every intention of telling her, it had totally slipped due to the hectic events of the day.
“Jo, I’m afraid Madge has had another turn for the worse” as he began talking he headed away from the bedroom door so that Madge would not be disturbed by the hum of conversation.  Leading the way toward his study he slipped his arm though Joeys and lead her again into the study where he sat down facing her
“Jo I have to explain the situation to you, Madge is ill, which I presume you have gathered already” seeing her nod in confirmation he continued “However, she is more ill than you know, more ill than I’ve allowed to let you know and I must apologise but until a few days ago I did not realise the gravity of the situation myself. For the last few months Madge has had a cold which hasn't seem to improve, its been lingering and although I was concerned I considered it nothing more than a minor illness, a result of the hot weather . . .”
Jo had heard the phrase ‘a lingering cold’ more times than she cared to recall in association with Jem's work at the san and the reasons why many of the girls had parents in the san. Putting two and two together and coming up with at least ten.
As her mind raced Jem continued “ . . . and thats why she will have to go away for a time as I’ve already explained”
“What? Why will she have to go!?”
“Didnt you hear a word I said” he growled growing impatient “she is going to have to the San, permanently or at least until there is a major change”
“A major change in what” she ventured hoping she would finally have her questions answered
“It’s not bilious attacks Madge has been suffering from Jo, its something much worse but” he added “treatable if caught in time” taking a deep breath he cleared he throat “I don’t want to scare you Joey, but this is going to be a very difficult time”
Inside he groaned listening to himself, he had given this talk time and time again to concerned families sure that it would help to relieve their fears, but giving the same well rehearsed speech in regard to one he loved so much it was an entirely different matter and he realised that it was not nearly so effective or reassuring as he had presumed. In fact, it sounded uncommonly like the ‘doctor’ talk he despised so much and strove never to recreate himself.
“Oh Jem please tell me it isn't” Jo cried, her face once again contorted in horror reminiscent of earlier that day “Please, please, please no . . .” trailing off, her voice grew quieter but more insistent like she was trying to rid herself of some evil which had poisoned her thought.
“Tell you it isn't what Jo?, what is it you think is wrong”
Shaking her head she refused to say and after taking a deep breath he tried to continue
“Madge has Tuberculosis Jo, I’m so sorry” he blurted out.
Glancing at his young sister in law he saw none of the shock he had fully expected to be present in her expression. The horror which had marked her features so strongly just a few seconds before had faded and she sat looking calm, only her eyes wider that usual under the long lashes which swept her cheeks.
Thinking she was about to burst into tears Jem leant forward ready to comfort her but was surprised once again when she spoke
“So what's the next step Jem, where from now?”
“Jo are you alright” he cautioned
“Oh course I’m fine, its Madge we have to worry about. I’m not going to cause any more trouble if I can help it!” she stated simply head held high.
Jem could not help but feel a swell of pride at the mature and brave way Jo was taking the life shattering news. In fact he thought better than himself. He could not believe that the headstrong, impulsive girl she had been only a few days ago had been tamed and replaced by the pillar of strength she now appeared to be.
Still dumbstruck he started at her only just preventing his mouth from falling open in surprise. Finally finding his voice Jem explained what was to happen over the next few weeks.

Leaving the study Joey let his words run through her mind. Madge was to be taken by ambulance to the san that night and Robin would be going back to school replacing her position as a current day girl with that of a border. The babies on the other hand were more of a problem, she knew that Jem was not really happy at having them so far away from him especially as he would be practically living at the San once Madge had taken up residence.
However, this was not to be a problem for much longer. Jo heard a bell peel out in the study and ran back to answer the call. Once at the door she realised that Jem had not yet left and had answered himself. Hearing Jem's voice she stuffed her fingers into her ears and hurried back the way she had come so as not to overhear the conversation. Upon reaching her room the study door flew open and Jem bustled his face drawn yet showing the signs of relief. Still standing with her fingers plugging her ears it took her a while to realise what Jem was laughing about. Realising, she joined in herself and lowered her arms and removing her fingers from her ears.
“What's happened Jem, you seem, oh I don’t know, relieved! almost?” said she after recovering from her laughter
“That was Herr Mench from the San, he just called to offer me one of the Chalets up there for me to stay whilst Madge is recovering”
“Buts that's wonderful Jem! I’m so glad”
“Yes, but hold on Jo, its not the best bit yet. The problems with the babies are all but solved. Herr and Frau Mench has offered to take them in until Dick and Mollie arrive”
“Smashing!” replied naughty Jo, knowing that her brother in law held that statement with little regard “I’m so glad. But y’know Jem, I really could have looking after them alright”
Seeing the keen face before him and realising much of what Jo was saying was in mock
jest he could not help but see the honest ring in the words and realising Jo really did mean what she said he sighed and replied
“I know you would have been capable but as I said earlier that’s not the point. I want you to concentrate on helping Madge, over this next while she is going to need you more than ever before. Now Jo while I’ve got you here I want you to do something for me”
“Sure Jem, what ever it is I’ll be happy to do it”
“Before Madge was ill this afternoon she wanted to speak with you about what was wrong with her, but” he said “we both know she has been denied that request. However I think it is very important for her to be able to talk with you before she leaves for the san, for although she will be able to speak with you there it will not be in the comfort of her own home and I doubt she will be up to it. I’m leaving now with Rob and the babies on the picnic and so. . .”
Taken aback at this pronouncement Jo drew her eyebrows together in a startled frown
“I know Jo, it seems callous to continue with the everyday things but our lives can’t stop. We must do our best to make sure things remain as normal for the younger ones in our family no matter how we feel ourselves. Do you think that the Robin should really be told about how sick Madge really is?”
Seeing Joey shake her head he continued
“So I think then you understand why we have to continue making things as normal as possible. Besides” he added “this is the last time I’m going to see them all together for a while what with living at the san and all. I also think you now have some idea of the reasons I don’t think you should be left to look after everyone. Jo I honestly think it would be too hard for you to live such a double life, not to mention that you would have no time on your own”
Placing his hand on the girls shoulder he met the dark eyes with his own. Smiling enquiringly he led the way to Madge's door continuing to talk as he went
“I’m just going to see if Madge is awake” he stated his voice dropping to a whisper.
Looking in the door he saw his wife sitting up in bed propped up by large yellow pillows writing. Pen poised in hand she looked up and seeing Jem tried to get out of bed
“Madge get back immediately, I thought I told you to stay put until I let you up”
Walking into the room, Joey followed and felt a warm glow inside herself as her sisters face lit up with delight at seeing her.
“I’m going out to picnic with the babies Madge, they’ll probably be wondering where I am by now. While I’m gone I’ll leave you and Jo to have a nice long chat” turning to Joey he asked her to call Rosli to make bring up Kaffee and Kuchen to the pair while they talked.
Jo whose stomach had been grumbling on and off for the last half hour due to lack of sustenance was more than glad and rang the pretty bell on the bedside table summoning the ever faithful maid to her call. Stepping into the hallway Jo asked in the pretty accented German for coffee and cakes to be brought up
“Ja mein Fraulein” replied she and after curtsying sped off to procure a decent meal for her mistress and her young sister.
Heading back into the room she was met by Jem who was leaving for his picnic and ramble with the babies, slipping past him Jo went into the room and pulled up a chair.

Phew! thats all of it - 6421 words!! :o The longest story I've ever written!!  :o

Thank you Kelly!!
I feel the same way about New Family, I know it's short compared to some of the drabbles on here, but at 17000 words it's the longest thing I've ever written! (and not finished yet!!)

I had lost track of this a little, but now I've caught up it is really good.

Don't let length worry you, I remember the first time I posted being astounded by how much I managed to write, and then doubled it and a bit more for mt second long story!

Do write more, I look forward to seeing how Joey and Madge develop in this.

Why?  I am a normally quiet sort of person and I have explained why I am being relly quiet now.  Also I don't want to disturb the TEM though he is doing OK without me by all accounts.

Title: Re: Jo's dilemma

It's odd, because I thought noise kept the TEM at bay...

Title: Re: Jo's dilemma

Judging by the amounts of noise I have heard on all the drabbles I've read lately noise seems to encourage him.

Hello!!!!
I am back . . . finally. Yes I know you must be hoping this post means I have posted more story, but that is not the case I am afraid.
Thank you for the search party but I was away on holiday so you would not have found me! I was going to let you all know that I was to be away before I left but my internet connection was playing up and I had no hope of getting on the site let alone any where else. I was going to write more sotry during my break however I must report it was very sadly neglected and stands at approx 0 words more than when I went away. I will post some more as soon as I have written it!
I have got my results from my exams also so my mind is at ease  . . . much better conditions for drabble writing.   ;D
As soon as I've stettled down again and unpacked I'll try to write some more.

Title: Re: Jo's dilemma
Post by Kelly on Jan 17th, 2004, 10:15pm
Ok, here is the next part finally.
I'm having abit of trouble writing this at the moment, so I'll warn you now that posts with more story might be a bit infrequent till I get things sorted out

How long she was in Madge's room she would never remember but what was perhaps hours seemed like a few short minutes as she knew this could be the last time she would ever sit with her sister at home or perhaps for a very long time.
After talking about everything they could think of there was only one topic left untouched - Madge’s illness. Joey did not know if Jem had told Madge that she knew or not so she sat in an uncomfortable silence wringing her fingers in her lap.
Knowing how Joey was feeling but too awkward and nervous to speak herself she sat head bowed in the oppressive silence of the room.
Finally drawing the courage to speak Madge began
“Joey dear, I know Jem has told you what is going on, its alright I know he had to tell you”
Hearing the words Joey relaxed her face breaking into a smile knowing that at least she needn't lie to her sister over how much she knew. Continuing Madge went on
“I’m going to the san tonight, that you know also I think, so you’ll have to come and visit me in a day or so, though Jem thinks that after the trip I may be a bit too exhausted to have any visitors but we’ll see at the time.”
Looking into her sisters face Madge smiled “Everything will be fine you know, and if its not I’ll always be with you if not in body then in spirit. I know, I know” she said seeing Jo begin to look agitated “ I shouldn’t speak like that but you can’t know what is going to happen in the future. Of course we will hope for the best but I don’t want you to be under the impression that I’m unaware of what may happen. I’ve been a doctors wife for too long to be totally sheltered from the work Jem does, what he tells me and what I find out myself are two totally different things, and” she said with a significant look “I hope that this stays between you and I. I would really prefer for Jem to think he can protect me from all this, but of course he can’t but it would be better if he thought he could”.
Here she paused to catch her breath and Jo turned her sisters words over in her mind. Perhaps if Madge knew as much as she said she did then it would be alright if she were to speak a bit more freely, but then of course supposing Madge was just trying to reassure her that she understood what was going to happen when she really did not then things could be made a whole lot worse. Furiously debated so with herself, she did not realise Madge had begun to speak again.
“and so my girl . . . For goodness sake Joey stop mooning and listen to me, this is very important”
“Oh Madge I’m so sorry” she said shelving her previous thoughts to the back of her mind “I was just thinking, I’m sure I’ll listen now, I will, honestly”
“Well, what I was trying to say is for you alone, and perhaps for you to tell the Robin once she gets older, that is, if I’m not here to tell her myself. When girls reach about the age you are now, they are no longer girls, but young women, and so things change a bit. You will no longer be seen necessarily as a friend to men but as a woman, someone that they could fall in love with or . . .”
“Madge!” exclaimed Joey in high clarion tones being unused to her conservative sister speaking to her in such a modern and adult way “lets not talk about this please, its too . . . ah . . . too embarrassing!” she stuttered going scarlet in the process.
“I know Joe, but its perfectly natural, and you have to be told something sooner or later. No one ever told me anything and I wish that I had had the advice I am going to give you. Love is a wonderful thing, with the right person, but for a woman it requires a great deal of sacrifice also. You’ve only got to see me, and you’ll understand that. You can’t possibly be married and have a career at the same time. It means” she said “that you have to change your entire outlook, you will have to be entirely committed to your husband, I mean entirely, and devoted to his needs. Its not all wonderful and by that I don’t mean that I’m unhappy or that you will be but that it limits things somewhat. You lose you independence and sometimes your dreams” she spoke wistfully “A husband often means that unless you are very lucky you become second best, you must behave in the right way, help him to further his job, provide him with children and all that is not a choice my dear, if you marry it is your duty, you don’t really have any say in the matter. Just realise Jo that in as many ways as marriage is a blessing it is a sacrifice, but some sacrifices are worth making, especially if you really love and with your whole heart love the man whom you marry”
