Here's a little more. Thanks for archiving Vikki, I thought it was getting a little long.

French was the last lesson of the day, and the teachers had arranged a short walk as soon as lessons were finished. They were anticipating the snows soon when the girls would be trapped indoors so wanted to give the girls as much fresh air as possible while they could.
Con saw that Ali was safely wrapped up in the customary chaletian outfit before tucking her arm through her friends.
'You'll love this' she whispered in French, 'The scenery is beautiful and you'll get a real feel for the area.'
Geraldine smiled back, Con was being really nice and she was beginning to feel really at home here.
Con suddenly giggled, continuing in French she whispered, 'You'll be Mlle Berné's favourite now, she likes anyone who's good at French and she let us all off the extra prep because of you.'
'You don't think I made a bad impression?' whispered back Ali, 'It's not the sort of thing I normally do, I would have been in tons of trouble had I started a row like that back in Scotland.'
'Don't worry' replied Con, 'We always make exceptions for new girls. It takes them a while to get used to us because we're not like an ordinary school. Most people are a lot worse than you.'
'Con!' remarked a girl who had come up beside them, ' Ce n'est pas une manière gentille de parler à une nouvelle fille'
'Mary Lou!' gasped Con, stepping backwards.

Here you go!

However Mary Lou had already turned a friendly smile to Ali, 'Hello. I'm Mary Lou, how are you settling in?' Mary Lou spoke in slow French, obviously assuming that Geraldine was not yet fluent with the language.
'Mary Lou,' put in Con, 'Ali can speak fluent French'.
'Oh, can you? Why didn't you say, I wouldn't have bothered speaking slowly.' Mary Lou replied. Geraldine blushed slightly and apologised to Mary Lou. However Mary Lou recovered quickly from her embarrassment.
'Sorry Ali, most of the news aren't fluent so I just assumed that you weren't either, it was my fault for not finding out. Though I ought to have guessed hearing you two blabbering away in French.' At this point Con was able to smirk,
'I was just telling Ali that when you butted in'
Whatever Mary Lou might have decided to reply was lost for at that moment the line began to make it's move and Mary Lou dashed off to rejoin her partner with a friendly wave at Ali.
'Who was that?' whispered Ali as soon as she got the chance.
'Mary Lou' whispered back Con, 'She lived practically next door to us in Wales and the chalet school was her first school. She's very good if you've got any problems.'
'But not if you haven't ' Ali giggled back. 'Con, can you tell me who some of the others are?' Again the two became absorbed in conversation.
Margot looked up from her partnership with Len, it was unusual for them to pair for walks but otherwise the triplets did everything together. Len was beginning to feel a bit bad for frowning at Con earlier, after all she had been told to look after Geraldine. Con would probably come back to them once Ali had settled down. Unfortunately Margot did not feel the same, resenting the way that the pair had become so close so quickly. In fact Margot was jealous at the way that Ali had been able to create a better friendship than she had with Con. Had Con known this she would have probably spoken with her sisters however she assumed that they were being possessive of her and this encouraged her to develop her friendship with Ali and become even more separate, glad of a chance to break away from her traditional mould.

Here's some more.

As the group returned to the school Ali was full of wonder, the scenery was absolutely breathtaking and even her years in Scotland had not prepared her for this. Con smiled, her literary mind had had a similar reaction when she had first arrived and she understood what Ali was feeling. Len had found herself approached by Mary Lou,
'Hi Len, I see Con's helping the new girl to settle in. It's strange that she came so late on in the term isn't it, still she seems all right.'
'Yes, Geraldine Hatherthwaite is settling in quickly. She's fluent at French and very good at maths.'
'Really? It's Ali isn't it? She seems nice though Len, I can see you two becoming friends. Oh Len, she isn't the one who has Richard Hatherthwaite as a father? I'm going to go back over to talk.'
'Yes' Len responded vaguely then added cheerily that Mary Lou was speaking to the daughter of an author here.
'Yes' laughed Mary Lou, 'but Jo Bettany is not the next Dickens, this Hatherthwaite character apparently is.' She turned back to Len, 'You don't think he's ill do you and that's why Ali has been sent away?' with that Mary Lou was off leaving Len to comment bitterly that 'she hoped he was' before turning back to Margot.
'Hope who is what?' came another voice, that of Verity Ann who was strolling along with Vi Lucy at her side.
'Nothing' blushed Len,
'Did you see where Mary Lou went?' asked Verity Ann.
'To speak to Ali Hatherthwaite' supplemented Margot
'Come on Verity!' called Vi and with that the pair were off too, looking behind them Margot could see that they were at the back.
'Len, we ought to run too, we're getting behind.'
'No' glowered Len, Margot turned, it was unusual for Len to be so moody. Instinctively she blamed Con, if only this Ali had never arrived.
Sometime later the pair arrived to sharp words from Miss Wilmot, who had begun to worry about the pair. Looking at Len Miss Wilmot noted she was rather flushed and quickly packed her off to Matron.
'Hurry up and get your books Margot' she instructed, 'Everyone is to do as much prep as she can before supper so that we can dance afterwards.'
Margot did not need any more prompting and soon joined her industrious classmates who were working under the supervision of Betsy Lucy. Due to the nature of Mlle Berné's homework Betsy was having to be somewhat lenient. However, none of the girls was willing to risk her place in the evening's entertainment and prep was going well. Con and Ali planned to see Miss Edwards about their idea straight after prep and were both working hard on their story. They had chosen to base it on Moliere's L'Avare, that being what Ali had read most recently. After Ali had outlined the plot Con had had an idea of adapting the story to be set around the chalet school. Ali had agreed enthusiastically and a rough draft had quickly been produced. Ali was now involved in writing the first half whilst Con laboured on the second, frequent breaks were needed to exchange ideas but the two got it done fairly quickly. The next homework was the maths, it was due in in a week and Con and Ali were keen to get the club started as soon as possible. Ali worked her way through the problems, finding them to be of a similar nature to those she had done before. When the bell went she was two thirds of the way through. She and Con packed away quickly, then taking their French homework went along to hand it in, hoping to find Miss Edwards on the way.
In this respect they were fortunate and Ali was able to introduce her idea somewhat shyly at first but with growing enthusiasm once she saw the maths teacher's positive response. Miss Edwards for her part was delighted that her students should be taking such an active interest. She knew that the club would be a great help to all who were involved. Miss Edwards offered to meet the pair the next morning, which would be a Thursday, to finalise the arrangements. The pair would then have to present their idea to Miss Annersley. The pair then went to get ready for supper.

You can't catch up really - the only time we managed it was when the board collapsed! The best you can do is try and run fast enough to stay in one spot!

This is the end of chapter 2

Over the meal Ali gave news of Miss Edward's response and the news was greeted with joy by all. Len had been tucked up to an early night by Matron much to her annoyance. Margot, without the influence of her elder sister was also enthusiastic; the idea would save her some work. She noted that Con was being a bit cold towards her, annoyed at her sisters' uncompromising attitude. However Ali enquired pleasantly about how Len was and Margot gave her answer, surprised that Len had not been missed earlier. Len received a chorus of support from the table and Margot found herself for the moment appeased however her dislike for Ali still simmered.
The dancing went well, Ali was familiar with some of the dances but had to learn others and in this she had the help of her form. Veronique, who had been new at the start of term was especially helpful. Ali once again received greetings from Mary Lou who was rapidly introducing her to the other members of the school. Ali collapsed into bed completely exhausted, aware that she had not yet had a full day in school. She had been allocated a dorm with Con, Mary Lou, Veronique, Vi Lucy and two other girls who were introduced as Lesley Malcolm and Clem Barras as dorm prefect.

As the last [post was so short I'm going to be extra generous before I scuttle off to do some Chem revision.

Chapter 3

Ali found herself sleeping soundly that night but she awoke at the peal of the rising bell and responded to Clem's call of 'Show a leg!' Unsure of what to do next Ali stuck her head round the curtains to meet Clem's smiling face.
'Morning Ali, Con's up so she'll be with you in a minute, I have first bath so I have to dash, today's German day by the way do you speak it?'
'Yes' gasped out Ali, somewhat shocked by Clem's kindly brusequeness.
'In that case you'll settle in in no time' came another voice, that of Mary Lou, 'Hurry up Clem, I'm next in the bather!' With that Clem disappeared, needing no further prompting.
'It's a bit of a scrum in the morning but you'll get used to it.' Continued Mary Lou kindly.
'Lesley! Are you up yet? Gets a move on!'
'I am up.' Complained Lesley, 'No need to shout like that Mary Lou'
'Sorry' responded Mary Lou, however at this point Clem reappeared and Mary Lou dashed off. Con appeared from behind her curtains and took over instructing Ali on how to get ready. When Con dashed off for her bath, Veronique took over explaining that Ali could have her bath cold or luke warm.
'Do you not have hot water here?' Enquired Ali. This met with laughter from the rest who assured her that they did but that having hot baths in the morning was just not done.
'Oh, I don't mind of course and I suppose it would be awfully difficult to heat all that water. We often had to preserve it in Scotland. Is this me?' she enquired once more at the sound of Con's footsteps.
'Yes' replied Veronique, 'Do hurry though because I am last this morning and don't want us to be late.
'Understood' called Ali as she raced off.
As the group entered the breakfast room Con noted that Len was back at the table looking a lot happier. Unfortunately though Len was in a central position and Con and Ali needed edge seats so that they could slip off quickly for their meeting with Miss Edwards. Con and Ali were joined by Mary Lou and her friends. Margot came down late to breakfast, their dorm had had a somewhat disastrous morning. Margot moved to sit next to Len realising that for once her sister was actually reachable rather than surrounded by an impenetrable throng of others.
'Who's missing?' she asked as she slipped into a nearby seat. Len tilted her head towards the group at the end of the table.
'I don't know why they didn't sit with me' she added, 'there was plenty of room.' Margot frowned then turned to Len,
'Are you feeling better?'
'I suppose so. We've got science this morning haven't we, I bet Geraldine has never done that, her old school in Scotland sounds pretty second rate'
'Len!' gasped Julie Lucy, 'It's not like you to be like that. Is there something wrong between you?'
'No Julie' Len looked down, unwilling to tell the head girl what was going on, for once she was unsure that Julie would take her side. Frustrated by her own attitude Len moodily stirred the food on her plate.
'Don't do that Len, pull yourself together. It can't be that bad.' With these bracing words Julie Lucy left. Although Len was able to see where her actions were headed Julie's words had left Margot seething. Ali had now got Len into trouble with the head girl. It was going to be anything but a peaceful morning.

Who wanted more? Thanks for all the nice comments!

As the meal due to a close Len reflected on Julie's words and forced herself to the conclusion that she was being unjust towards Ali. She had seen with a twinge of embarrassment and annoyance, the pair slip off with Miss Edwards and realised that they had not been deliberately avoiding her after all. Why am I being like this? She asked herself. After all Geraldine had done nothing to her and though her father was Richard Hatherthwaite Geraldine had hardly boasted at all. In fact she had said less than Len had said about her own mother. Len was mature enough to realise that her behaviour was not something to be proud of however jealousy had never bothered Len before. She had never had anyone to be jealous of. Unsure of what to do Len looked nervously down the table to where Mary Lou was seated, wondering whether to ask for advice from her. She was determined not to lose any more of her self control. As she got up to leave the dining room she found Julie Lucy beside her,
'Len, if you want to talk about anything I'm right here.' Said Julie softly.
Len gulped and then nodded, 'Please, I would'
Julie smiled, 'I'll see you this afternoon. Len, don't worry you're doing the right thing.'
Feeling slightly reassured Len went to collect her books for science, feeling embarrassed about her earlier words to Margot and determining to help Ali if she could.
Meanwhile the meeting with Miss Edwards had gone well and the problem solving club had been provisionally arranged to meet on Friday lunchtimes, Con and Ali would see Miss Annersley that afternoon to gain her consent.
As the girls entered the science lab they were greeted by Miss Wilson,
'Good morning girls. Ali, I have your books here. This morning you can work with Len, who will show you the ropes. You have not done science before I believe?'
'No Miss Wilson, we didn't cover it at my last school as we were too small.'
'Well don't worry, from your test you seem to have a logical mind, so you will get on well. You are also fluent with our three languages which will be a great help. I suggest that you borrow Len's book at the end of the lesson and copy up what you have missed. If you have any questions you can ask the prefect who is on your prep duty tonight.'
'Yes Miss Wilson.'
At this point Len came over, Con was working with Veronique but she indicated the bench space next to her. Len and Ali went over.
Ali found Len helpful and informative but not as friendly as Con had been. Len was also inclined to be patronising, starting from as basic as possible. Ali found this rather tedious but stuck with it and was happy when presented with Len's perfect book of notes at the end of the lesson. As they left the lab Ali drifted back to Con,
'No guesses why you got put with Len,' grinned Con, 'Bill doesn't think too much of my scientific skills.'
'Con!' smiled Ali, somewhat uncertain of what to say.
'It's true' acknowledged Con, 'Too much daydreaming and not enough listening that's my problem. Bill wants you set firmly on the straight and narrow'

Here's some more! I'm moving to focus on Len for a bit but hopefully it won't be for long!

'What do we have now?' enquired Ali.
'German' groaned Con
'When will we have English?' asked Ali.
'Tomorrow, that's English day'
'But surely everyone can't have English on the same day?'
'No, but junior A streams do follow the language of the day.'
'Oh' responded Ali, somewhat confused.
By this time however they had reached the classroom and Ali was soon busy labelling yet another pile of new books, and being questioned once more as to her abilities. Once again, little was found lacking and Ali swept through the lesson with her usual ease much to the delight of the new German mistress, Frau Griffiths.
As they went along to get their milk and biscuits Con and Ali were approached by Len.
'Hi Len, thanks for helping me this morning. Are you feeling better?' asked Ali. There was something that annoyed Len in Ali's carefree response. Ali was as usual surrounded by members of the form, discussing the progress of the new club.
'Yes thanks' responded Len briefly before heading off to join Margot and Emerence. Ali and the others continued their discussion until the bell went when they all headed back to German. Len found it difficult to concentrate in the lesson, part of her was frustrated with her attitude, and another part told her that she was quite right in her response. She was startled back to reality by a sharp kick from Connie Winters when she realised that Frau Griffiths was asking her a question,
'Len, Waren Sie nicht hörend?'
'Ummm' Len blushed red, unsure of how to reply. Unfortunately Frau Griffiths was in a bad mood. She went into a flow of angry German,
'Kein waren Sie nicht. Ich unterrichte eine Lektion und Sie nicht sogar haben das höflichkeit
, zum zu hören. Was mehr ist, wenn ich Ihnen eine Frage stelle, können Sie nicht mir eine gerade Antwort sogar geben und anstatt es vorziehen, sie zu versuchen und zu vermeiden. Sie sind nicht nur unhöflich aber unehrlich. Da Sie offensichtlich, es vorziehen würden nicht in der Lektion zu sein, lehne ich ab, Sie zu unterrichten. Gehen Sie! Stehen Sie draußen!'
Len set back, shocked. Perhaps it was because Frau Griffiths was new, but she had never been spoken to like that before. Teachers had always regarded Len as the model student. The other members of the class were also shocked. Ali attempted to rescue the situation,
'Frau Griffiths, I am sure that Len did not mean to be rude.' She said in her pretty German.
'If her German was as good as yours that would not be a problem but Len does need to listen. I was making an important grammatical statement, a mistake that Len has made many times in her essays. I repeat my request, Len please leave the room.' Responded Frau Griffiths in slightly calmer German. Ali gave apologetic eyes to Len whose eyes had already filled with tears as she pushed back her chair to leave. Once again there was a shocked silence whilst Margot gazed angrily at the back of Ali's head. As Len stood outside sobbing Julie Lucy came by,
'Len! What is going on? You don't feel ill do you?' She enquired anxiously.
'No, I…I…' stuttered Len,
'Come on, let's have that talk now, I was just on my way to the library but that essay can wait. What did you just have?'
'German.'
'Righto' Julie knocked on the door, 'Frau Griffiths, I have Len. I'll send her to you at lunch'. Frau Griffiths nodded then as Julie closed the door continued her lesson.
'Come on' Julie put her arm round Len, 'You don't have to cry'

It's al right Toria, don't mind you focussing on Len a bit, you've really managed to explore her character deeply, I have to say I feel a bit sorry for her, it must be hard for her to suddenly have to struggle with emotions she hasnever felt before.
Hope that Julie manages to help her.

Here you go, the end of chapter 3!

As they entered Julie's study Julie settled Len in the comfy chair,
'Kafe?' She asked. Len nodded.
'Right. Well, whilst that's brewing up you can tell me what's going on. It hasn't got anything to do with the new girl, Geraldine has it?'
Here Len nodded,
'Well, suppose you start from the beginning' Julie responded logically.
'Well…Mamma and I met Ali at the station. She seemed nice enough only then we found out that she had Richard Hathertwaite as a father. I didn't want mamma displaced as our school author so I tried to play it down. I took her along to Miss Dene and she was really polite. She didn't need me to tell her about the curtsey cos she did it at home, then it turned out that she was trilingual as well. She even shares our birthday! Well then Deney shoved me out and I thought she would send someone else for her cos she would be in a lower form. Next thing I knew Con had been asked to sheepdog and was introducing her to our table. She told everyone about her father and of course they were all really impressed. I suppose I must have looked a bit annoyed cos then she smiled at me, she seemed really friendly but I was still annoyed. I didn't know why I hadn't been asked to show her around. Next thing, we were in maths and it turned out she was a mathematical genius too. After the lesson we were complaining about homework and Con suggested they work together. Ali seemed really taken with the idea; she and Con are really close. I said it was dishonest and didn't want anything to do with it. However then it turned out Ali meant starting a club, anyway Mlle was annoyed when she came in cos they were all talking and she was going to let me and Ali off the punishment. Then Ali came up with this perfect apology and she let them all off. Ali became the favourite person then on the walk everyone kept going on about her. I was really annoyed and then I got sent to bed by Matron cos I looked flushed so I missed the dance. I blamed Ali. Next morning I was sitting at breakfast when Con and Ali came in looking all chummy. They sat at the end of the table and I thought they were ignoring me but then it turned out that they weren't. I spoke to you and decided to be nicer to Ali. Bill asked me to help her in science and I did honestly try but it still went a bit wrong. She's so clever Julie! Then we had German and I was thinking it over, Connie gave me a kick and I realised Frau Griffiths was talking to me, she asked me if I was listening and I didn't know what to say so I just ummmmed. Next thing she went completely mad, telling me I was rude and dishonest. She asked me to leave but I was so shocked that I just sat there. Ali stood up and tried to get me off but it didn't work. I went out and then you found me.'
'Oh Len, why didn't you just apologise straight away?'
'I don't know.' Tears ran down Len's face.
'Here, drink this and you'll feel better' Julie Lucy pressed the cup of coffee into Len's hands., 'Len' she continued seriously, 'it sounds to me as if you are very jealous of Ali and it is understandable, are any of the others having problems?'
'No, I don't think so, they all seem to like her more than me.'
'Oh Len that's just because you're not being yourself. I can see why it's just you who's jealous though.'
'Why?'
'Well you've always been able to do everything, due to your connections with the school everyone knows you and your mother's fame has led you to become a… mini celebrity. Then Ali comes, is better at your subjects than you and her father is more famous than your mother. What is more, rather than our normal dosage in news she seems normal and doesn't need your help. But Len you're looking at it the wrong way. There will always be someone who is better than you at each subject but that's not what matters. God accepts us as we are Len and he wants us to stay that way. You are special Len, it's just that your position has changed, I know that you can get used to it.'
Len nodded feeling reassured.
'When you've finished go down and apologise' urged Julie Lucy, 'then you can get back to normal. If you do need any more help, I'm here but I don't think you will somehow.' Again Len nodded.
'Try to see this as a positive Len, it may be that this experience enables you to help others in a way you were unable to before.'
Len blinked back the last of her tears before smiling at Julie,
'Thank you, you're right, I have nothing to be jealous of.' As she concluded the bell rung for the end of the lesson and Len picked herself up to dash to history with a final, 'Thank you Julie!'

The head girl smiled herself then she sighed as she set forth for English, she still hadn't managed to get that essay done.
That evening all was quiet in the lower IVA common room. Con and Ali were tucked up in a corner making their final plans for the club, Len was carefully writing out her apology letter to Frau Griffiths and Margot was off spending the evening with Emerence. The other members of  lower IV were either letter writing or working on a massive jigsaw that had been a gift to Connie Winters. Ali was left to reflect on another successful day, the afternoon had been spent in the art rooms where Ali had been able to demonstrate some of her talent in that field.
'I mean to illustrate my own books' she had told Con, 'So that the illustrations can be just right. They convey so much of the feeling of the novel, that can be lost if you don't capture the scene perfectly. No one else would be able to create my own dreams.'
'I s'pose not but I'd rather someone else did mine' Con had added, 'You're talented Ali but I'm not, someone else would do the illustrations much better than me.'
'But it's not talent, it's hard work. That's what you get when you live in a remote castle. When I couldn't go to school, I had to do things myself and when I could go I worked as hard as I could.'
'Is it just you then?' Con had asked with interest.
'Oh there's Mrs Mills and Mamma and Papa'
'I meant like sisters and brothers.'
'Not anymore. I did have an elder sister, Ellen Charlotte but I'd rather not talk about it now.'
'Of course' Con had drawn a supportive arm around her friend and let the matter drop. She knew that Ali would tell her when she was ready.

Chapter 4

Once Ali had settled in the days seemed to fly by. Ali had managed to get the problem-solving club up and running and Miss Edwards noted that she had seen a marked progression in the form's mathematical skills. It had also begun snowing like mad so they couldn't get out and the teachers were glad for any activity that would take the girl's minds of the fact that they were stuck indoors. All the teachers had been wracking their brains to think up anything and Miss Wells, the English teacher had come up with a short story writing competition. The girls would work in pairs to produce a book due in after the Christmas holidays. Con and Ali had naturally teamed together and Len had taken the initiative and asked Veronique to help her with her own novel. This led to Margot's further dissatisfaction despite her slight appeasement when Emerence offered herself as a partner.
One morning the girls awoke to see that the snow had stopped falling. They dashed excitedly down the stairs to the notice board. Ali who reached it first was called upon to read out the notice, it being German day she read it slowly,
'As the snow has stopped this morning's lessons are cancelled and we will be spending the morning outside. Please collect your ski things and meet in the hall, do not forget your snow glasses. You are free to speak whichever language you choose for the remainder of the day.' This last was read in English and after Ali had finished there was an excited cheer before a stampede to the dorms to collect belongings. The corridors were full with chatter and those who had not yet crawled out of bed found themselves doing so very quickly.
'Do you think we'll get out before Fruhstuck?' Ali asked Con
'Don't know, I hope so though, it'll probably start snowing again soon. Have you skied before?'
'A bit, when we were in France and Germany and I've done some in Scotland. I haven't skied for years though. I've probably forgotten how. I used to love it.' Ali concluded somewhat wistfully and Con thought it best to change the subject.
'Have you got everything? Let's go and find the others, Len and Veronique will be wondering where we are.'
With this the pair expertly swung equipment onto their shoulders and set to running down the stairs.
'Con, Ali! No need to run, you need to have a bite to eat first then you'll be let out. I don't want you falling down the stairs!'
'Sorry Julie' replied Con, her eyes glittering with excitement. Julie in her turn smiled back, the friendship with Ali was certainly doing wonders for one member of the Maynard clan.
Time seemed to rush by and soon the girls were all out marvelling at the beauty of their surroundings.
'Come on! Lets head for over there!' Len waved an excited arm and dashed off quickly followed by the others. Ali barely had a chance to think about whether she did remember how to ski before she too was off, gliding over the snow. All four managed to draw the attention of the others,
'Wow those four are good!' commented Connie Winter to no-one in particular.
'What do you expect?' grinned Betsy Lucy, 'Con and Len are two and everyone knows that they've been expert since they learnt in Canada. Veronique was born at the foot of the Alps and has been skiing since she could walk. I didn't know the new girl was so good though, she sort of glides.'
However the four were oblivious to the attention that they were attracting,
'I'm so glad I came to the Chalet School' said Ali, 'I'd be stuck indoors back home, probably writing my novel, though to be honest it had come to a bit of a dead end, there's much more inspiration out here.'
Veronique laughed, 'You can't find inspiration in a Scottish castle?'
'Well…' Ali blushed, 'You run out of ideas after a time, sometimes you need a break.'
'Let's get skiing again, it's too cold to stand about' supplemented Con and with that they were all off again.
Margot also looked up to the group. She had hoped that she, Len and Con would all ski together however it seemed that they had forgotten her. Why had Con been so taken with Ali? And then Len too, all she seemed to want to do was to chase round after them. Why couldn't they be proper triplets, Margot wondered. If only Ali wasn't there she could be up in that happy foursome.
'Margot, let's go!' came Emerence's voice. Margot gave a wistful smile before joining her partner. Emerence was no where near as good a skier as the others and although she had got past the beginner stage, she was not yet able to ski completely freely.
Meanwhile the four were busy working out skiing patterns, discovering that you can have a lot of fun skiing in a group.
Eventually the girls had to be called in, as they were going in though Miss Dene asked Ali to step to one side.
'Yes Miss Dene?' asked Ali.

'You'll have to wait and see, but don't worry I'm sure they'll love it. Now go and have something to eat.'
Ali slipped back into the hall, quickly finding her seat,
'What are you looking so secretive about?' questioned Con
'Nothing' Ali replied quickly.
'What did Miss Dene want' asked Veronique.
'Oh nothing, just to check that I was settling in OK'
'Geraldine Hatherthwaite what is going on?' Con was by now fully aroused.
'Shush you'll find out when we've finished eating'
The meal seemed to drag by much to the annoyance of Con and Veronique. Len was blissfully unaware of the secret as the girls were seated in dormitories. However finally Miss Annersley stood up and rang the little bell on the dais.
'Girls, I have a very special announcement to make. Sadly the snow has begun falling so you cannot go outside but we do have something special planned for this afternoon. As you know we are drawing near to the Christmas season when we always perform our Christmas play. As you know we normally have the honour of Jo Bettany, the first pupil of this school writing the play. However this year she has been very busy with her latest book and hasn't had the time. Instead the play has been provided by another author, whom some of you will have studied…Richard Hatherthwaite.'
Here she paused to allow for an excited gasp to travel around the hall. Unfortunately she made the mistake of looking towards where Geraldine was sitting and seeing the faces that the other members of Wallflower were making at Ali. Clearly the news was as much a surprise to them as anyone else. Miss Annersley had to make the pause slightly longer and by the time she felt able to continue, an expectant hush had already fallen.
'The reading will take place this afternoon, Geraldine will be reading the play herself as she is familiar with some of the characters. You may also be pleased to hear that Mr Hatherthwaite has based the characters on some of you, adapted from Ali's letters home and supplemented by Miss Dene. I would ask that you read those characters yourselves, however many characters have been left open, some based on his novels and those Geraldine will, along with her own part read for the present. Now if you would wait in silence until you are dismissed at which point you are to go quietly to the splasheries before going to the main hall.'
Miss Annersley noted with some amusement that those characters who had been pulling faces at Geraldine earlier now looked faintly seasick and were giving Ali nervous glances. Even Mary-Lou looked worried, and well she should thought Miss Annersley as she recalled the character that had been written for Mary Lou.
'You never told me anything.' Con whispered softly to Ali.
'I couldn't' Ali whispered back, 'Deney made me promise not to.'
'Still, you might have told me. Have you read it yet?'
'Yes, Papa sent it last week, he asked for me to do the first reading because I know the characters so Miss Dene let me read it.'
'Oh. Ali am I in it?'
'Wait and see.' Ali gave a smug grin, 'I better go along to the hall. I'll meet you there.'
'Ali!' called Con.
'No talking Con, didn't you hear Miss Annersley ask for silence?' Clem Barrass seemed perfectly calm but inside she, along with the other members of Wallflower had the same feeling of nervous anticipation. Had she been given a part? Did she want one? It would be an honour of course but what would the character be like if it was based on her? Clem joined the crowd of others heading to the hall.
On reaching it the girls were allocated into small groups. Clem found herself in a group with the rest of Wallflower, Julie Lucy, Betsy Lucy, Verity Ann, Vi Lucy, Connie Winter, Emerence Hope and Len and Margot Maynard. To their group highlighted scripts were given and each of them quickly rifled through looking at her part.
Some of them played relatively minor characters and to each was attached a note describing her character. Betsy Lucy for example found that her character was based partly on herself and partly on Alicia, a character from one of the novels. This pleased Betsy Lucy who had always imagined herself as being rather like Alicia, the description matched her almost perfectly. Emerence also had a small part but it was Mary Lou who was drawing the most attention. Her character had been based solely on herself but Mr Hatherthwaite had allowed himself the liberty of greatly embellishing the part until Mary Lou could have stepped right out of one of the novels. In fact attached to Mary Lou's note was a request to use her in his next book.

To those who commented on what Ali had written home:
This is Ali we are talking about! How could she help but recall her first impressions in true authorish tones!
The play is coming, but it's harder to write than the other bits so you will have to wait. I have written a tad more that will solve some of your queries but I'm not sure if I should post it yet or wait till I've written more.

I am enjoying this, but I can't help feeling the play is going to make things very difficult for Ali. Those girls who showed their dislike of her aren't going to dare say a word around her, in case it gets back, so she will be very much ostracised.

Here's a little bit more, there will be more about the play. This is just a brief overview. I haven't finished writing it completely either so there may be some EBDisms later on, still you said that you wanted more.......

Mary Lou, thankfully appeared in only one of the four acts but the one she did appear in, she seemed to say something every other line. Mary Lou was bright red with embarrassment but had to admit that it was an accurate representation when pressed by Vi and Verity Ann. These two also had relatively small parts, Verity Ann possessing the singing role.
Margot also had a smallish part; Len's was slightly larger. Len noted with some relief that her character appeared to be completely normal, slightly more insignificant than normal but still without the obvious jealousy.
The story was based around a young girl, played by Con who found herself in four different scenes. The first was out on the streets as a beggar girl where she was kindly helped by Geraldine, after being rebuffed by others. The 'others' were based on characters from the novels and were developed in their own right. There were some funny twists in this scene but eventually Geraldine would bring help in the form of Julie Lucy, who played her mother who would invite Con into their own house. This scene was added to by Verity Ann who had been enlisted to sing a solo, depicting the scene.
The next act was set in a busy market, in this act everyone rushed about, showing little regard for Christmas morals. Here Con played a helper on a busy stall and despite small wages her kind words to all, and gifts from the stall whenever possible earned her a strong regard.
The next scene was back in the house to which Con had been taken into. Here a lively debate ensued with Julie Lucy, Mary Lou and Lesley Malcolm all possessing major roles. All together about seven were present. Julie Lucy, whose house it was had the difficult job of chairing the debate which seemed to be on the ethics of Christmas. Mary Lou had a prominent role and couldn't resist giving her opinion on everything. However some of Mary Lou's comments were very meaningful and she helped Con into the final scene.
The fourth scene featured Clem Barrass who had the role as the leader of the church Christmas activities. This was the most meaningful of all the acts, it brought many of the characters together and it finalised the message that had been building up in the other scenes. As Ali concluded reading some of the others found themselves close to tears.
The girls were then given one hours free time; the main topic of conversation was naturally the Christmas play. There was no doubt that it was excellently written but some of the girls expressed doubts.
'I don't know why Auntie Jo didn't write this year', commented Maeve. 'Of course, it's an honour to have Mr Hatherthwaite but somehow it isn't quite the same, she is so much closer to the school. As for Ali, at least her father didn't write her too big a part, I don't think much of her reading.'
'Still, she did manage to convey the characters' Betsy Lucy observed.
'Well, you have a part written for you. I don't know what Ali has written home about Mary Lou but she seems to have been landed with one of the best parts. Still, it is an exaggeration of her character. I'm not sure that I would want to play it.'

Okay, here's more! Sorry I haven't posted for a bit, I've been a bit busy. I got baptised at the weekend, so we had lots of people over. We took my nan back yesterday so it's quiet now. But I go back tomorrow and I have modules next week!

Margot was also simmering, although she had been included, her part was small. There was nothing wrong with it, and some aspects of her character had been captured well but Margot somehow felt dissatisfied. Len was off with Ali, Con and Veronique again and Margot couldn't help but think that Ali was splitting them apart. What's more, the run up to end of term exams was started and Margot got the feeling that she wasn't going to do at all well. She knew she could not expect anything brilliant, after all she had only just been moved up but she was fed up with being overshadowed by Len, Con and now Ali. She remembered the skiing that morning; Ali had been a natural, gliding over the snow. They had only had a few outdoor games lessons that term and Ali had not particularly shone. They had had a lot of gym, which Ali was fair at and Margot had assumed that Ali would struggle with skiing. She had voiced this to Veronique before the play started and Veronique had merrily mentioned that Ali was one of the best at dance.
'But she isn't', thought Margot out loud, 'Those reels and things take learning and she can only do them because she has lived in Scotland. I bet they did them at her last school too.' Margot then thought about other aspects. The problem solving club had been a great success but surprisingly it hadn't been Ali who really shone but her sister Con. Ali had a logical mind and knew a great deal of techniques into a problem. Once told what to do Ali was excellent, and, encountering that problem again would perform perfectly. However it was Con who got the real flashes of inspiration that would lead them to the solutions of the more unconventional problems.
'I hate them all,' Margot continued out loud, having got herself into the bad mood she found that she was becoming even grumpier, 'I hate this school. Why does everyone judge me by Len and Con? Why do they ignore me? I wish that stupid Ali had never come!'
'So do I' came a merry voice at her side.
'Emerence!' Margot jumped feeling slightly embarrassed.
'She's a real pain. I suppose she thinks that she's brilliant now that her dad has written the play. Well she's not. Imagine him basing it on letters home! Come to think of it I don't think he's captured you at all well Margot, you're much nicer in real life!' Emerence continued happily. However despite her earlier feelings, Emerence's sympathy was not what Margot needed. She felt at war with the world and would have taken the opposite view to Emerence just to be annoying had Len not come rushing up...
'Margot. There you are. Guess what? Ali's parents have been called away over Christmas to work on one of his latest films. Then they're going back to Scotland but travelling and what with the snow they don't think they can have Ali. Con spoke to Mamma and because she's finished writing now we're to have her to stay over Christmas. I've invited Veronique because her parents are pretty snowed in as well and her brother is ill again so they don't want her back in case she gets infected too. Mamma said that you could invite Emerence back too if you wanted.'
'Do you want to?' Margot turned to Emerence, annoyance nagging her. They wouldn't even have Christmas to themselves.
'Love to' Emerence replied swiftly, 'I don't expect my family will mind, it's a short holiday anyway.'
'Right well that's settled. I've got to dash, see you around.' With that Len was off again leaving behind a deeply unsettled Margot.

Oh well KB, I'm sure there will be a fault with Ali somewhere (I might write one in) But she had to be better than Len and that was quite hard. She is supposed to be nice and understanding but that of course just adds to her perfection!
  However there is a fault in that she didn't pick up on Len's jealousy and hasn't yet picked up on Margot's (which could be dangerous!). It's only minor but there could be more to come!!!

That does make sense. I've just found people who were great at everything seemed to be rather priggish, which might justify Len's behaviour.

Here's more! We're getting closer to the mystery of Ellen Charlotte now, so you'll only have to wait a bit longer.

Chapter 5

The next morning the girls awoke to find that the snow was still falling and that it would be lessons as normal. There were no play rehearsals either, as the girls were still being given a chance to read through and start to learn their parts.
'The only blessing is that it's english day' groaned Lesley Malcolm as Con relayed the news back to the other members of the dorm having rushed down to the noticeboard as soon as possible.
'Oh help!' cried Mary-Lou, 'I still haven't got that English essay done, and we've got that German test today. That's what comes of having yesterday off!'
Con, Veronique and Ali exchanged grins, they had missed their German test yesterday and knew that so close to exams they would not be getting another.
'Come on, stop chattering, we're late as it is' Clem looked at her watch, 'we should have been down ten minutes ago.'
There was as instant scrabble for the door and minutes later the guilty looking six entered the Speisesaal. They received a glare from Matron but a few words from Clem quickly redeemed the situation. However they had to eat quickly and before they had finished they were dashing out to lessons. Lower IV A had history with Miss O'Ryan first followed by English so it was classified as a good morning.
As they all trooped in Ali thought back over the previous day, the play and skiing in the morning. Suddenly she felt enormously sad. She knew that she couldn't be with her parents over Christmas, and that didn't bother her so much. It was just the change of routine… and the skiing. Ali remembered how the last time she had skied had been with her elder sister, Ellen Charlotte. They had had a brilliant time under an excellent instructor, then when they had got back to Scotland… Ellen Charlotte had had a different skiing style to Ali, more calm and more academic she had insisted on precision. Ali remembered that for her it had been about having fun. As Miss O'Ryan entered, Ali tried to snap out of her thoughts but found it impossible. She just could not concentrate. It had been this day, this exact day that Ellen had first got ill, Ali began running over events in her mind and was startled to find Con shaking her back into reality.
'Ali are you feeling ill?' Miss O'Ryan asked anxiously, it was unlike Geraldine to be so inattentive.
'No, I just..' Ali trailed off, unsure of what to say. Suddenly she found tears running down her face.
'Ali, you can't be well, go outside and get a drink of water. Con, go with her. Ali if you don't feel better after that then go and see Matron.'
Thankfully Ali slipped out glad of Con's supportive arm around her shoulders.

A tiny bit more. Sorry it's not a lot more but I'm going out this evening and have to get SOME revision done!

'Ali, what's wrong?' Con asked as soon as they were out of the room. Ali gulped, she knew that the time had come to tell Con about her sister,
'It's my sister Ellen-Charlotte, today was the day that she first got ill.'
'Oh Ali.' Con tightened her hold.
'Is there anywhere we can talk?' gulped Ali. Silently Con led the way to an abandoned practice room, she was sure that Biddy would not mind and a glimpse at Ali's ashen face told her that she must seek Matron after the story anyway. As they arrived Con made a gap for herself and Ali amid the clutter. After a few moments Ali began her story.
'It was about two years ago now, I'd just had my ninth birthday in the summer and Ellie was thirteen. We went skiing in France in October and had a brilliant time. Ellie was always really organised, really collected and we skied together a lot. We were really sad when it ended and we had to go back to Scotland. We were a bit bored when we got back. Of course we had work from school and Ellie would spend time teaching me the things that she had learnt. She really wanted me to do well, that's why after she died I worked even harder.
Anyway, it started snowing and the only way we could get to school was round the mountain pass. Of course with the snow we couldn't. I was desperate to go, we were starting our Christmas play and I was desperate not to miss the auditions. This was the first year that I would be eligible for a proper part. Ellie felt really sorry for me, she wouldn't have minded working at home because she had that self-motivation but I didn't at that point. Instead I suggested that we ski there. Ellie was doubtful but agreed, she was an excellent skier and I had picked it up really quickly.
We had to leave early in the morning, so as our parents didn't notice. Then we began to make our way there. As we came to the top of the mountain it started snowing, we struggled but we made it to school. We were soaked through. I was O.K because we were auditioning so we tried on costumes and things but Ellie just sat there all day in her wet clothes. That evening when we made it back we were exhausted but the auditions were still going on and I wanted to go in tomorrow. We told our parents that we had been outside in the wood. Ellie knew that she was starting to come down with a cold, she always got things like that really badly because she was really delicate.
The next morning she was exhausted and I said that I would go without her. Ellie wouldn't hear of it and insisted on coming with me. It was snowing when we set out and Ellie was doubtful but I was desperate to go to school so we carried on. The snow got worse and worse and Ellie really struggled. When we reached the top of the pass it was a full on blizzard and Ellie was exhausted. She said that she couldn't go on but had to sit down and rest. I stayed with her for a bit but then…' Here Ali paused, struggling with her sobs and determination to go on.
