Title: Felicity Maynard  - Ballerina
Post by Marianne on Sep 2nd, 2003, 12:18pm
I started writing this story and its growing - i thought perhaps somebody might like to read it.

A Coincidence (chapter one)

A flaxen haired petite little girl stepped off a train into the bustling waterloo station, four boys of different ages stepped off after her. The Childs skirt and jersey coupled with a pair of plaits showed her age and innocence, her anxious face and awkward body language told computers of her newness to London.
‘Right – o then Fliss, there’s a woman over there looking for you young ballerinas, see, she’s got a sign. Off you trot, we chaps need to get to school!’ declared the eldest boy, Steven Maynard.
Felicity obeyed her 17 year old brother, she picked up her overnight case, took a deep breath to steady her nerves and headed towards the coach,
‘Don’t forget to write sis!’ Called her twin, Felix Maynard.
Felicity had naturally attended the Chalet school from her early days as a kindergarten baby but now she was joining the ranks of the royal ballet school to which she had been accepted the previous term.  Felicity was nearing her 12th birthday but looked and thought as a younger child.
‘Right boys, be seeing you! Write soon!’ Felicity called back before hurrying to get on the coach. She spotted a girl of about 14 years getting into the coach, she was tall, blonde and slim and bore a confident air.
‘Hi there, my names Felicity, what’s yours?’ asked Felicity of the elder girl who  went by the name of Katie Mason, Katie only stared stonily a head. Felicity blushed a faint red colour and climbed onto the coach, head down, hoping to find a seat. As she walked past the seats a girl to her right grabbed her arm and pulled her into a seat,
'Hey, I'm Molly, Molly Johns, you are?'
'Felicity Maynard, i'm new, why d'u pull me like that?' Felicity asked feircely, worried that everyone seemed greatly unfriendly.
'Coz i'm new too - cept my big sister is in fourth year so i know a bit about it. I just thought i'd tell you not to chat to the big girld - they don't like it!' replied Molly knowingly.
'Why on earth not? Thats just silly, at my place, my old school - the Chalet school - i was pals with girls way older!' excalimed Felicity.
'Really, how queer! I say, did you say the Chalet school?'
'Yep.'
'mY mummy wet there, isn't it in the Tirol?
'no-o, it wsa though, now its in Swizerland.' replied Felicity who was itching to find out who the girls mother was.
'My mummy was Amy Stevens. Your a Maynard too, that means your mum's Josephine M. Bettany! My mum told me of course.
'Wow!' said Felicity, stunned by this girls information,'well - it's nice to meet you.' finished Felicity.

For the rest of the journey the two girls exchanged information and stories and by the end Felicity was feeling much more confident . The girls filled off the coach, the 100 or so first years were gathered together into the hall where the 400 or so other pupils were sent to unpack and generally settle in, Molly and Felicity stuck together while they waited with bated breath for the impending speeches and instructions.
‘Welcome-welcome! Take a seat, where you are!’ shouted a male voice from the back of the room. The voice was loud, enthusiastic but tainted with a slight sarcasm that felicity in her innocence did not recognise – all the pupils obeyed his order with varying degrees of enthusiasm. Three other official looking people, who were senior staff members, followed the man. The first man, the one who had spoken claimed only 5”8 inches, he was bald and muscular and wore an outfit fit for a dancer, the next was man was taller, about six feet in height, he had a quieter, more sensitive persona, the next was a women, in her mid-fifties, her greying hair tied sharply back from her face in a sharp bun and her face wore a look that reminded Felicity of her father in his anger. . The final person was a young women, petite and gentle looking, she bore a pleasant face that attracted frightened new people like Felicity and Molly.

‘Good afternoon first years, you may call me Mr Murlyn, I am Head master at this establishment, this is my second in command…’
‘Mr Bulstrode,’ broke in the second man.
‘Good day new pupils, my name is Miss Burn, I am head of the academic curriculum here at the Royal Ballet School.’ Said the fierce looking women.
Finally the pleasant looking women spoke,’ My name is Miss Collier, I am head of the first year, in charge of you lot. You will meet Matron presently.’
‘That my dears is the end of the introductions – I shall ask Mr Bulstrode to introduce the boys to there quarters and I shall see you horrible lot at supper!’ said the head master before striding out of the room, with a final comment of, things to do, people to see!’

Only the 60 girls and two staff remained in the room, ‘Let me explain about the dormitories first, for I know you shall be dying to see them. There are twenty in each dormy although the number shrinks as you go up the school. They are arranged alphabetically. A-G, H-N and O-Z.’ began Miss Collier. At that announcement there were a multitude of reactions, Molly and Felicity were obviously delighted. ‘If the A-G’s would go with Miss Burn, you are in Pink Dormy, H-N’s you go with Louisa Bowers our Head girl and I shall take the last bunch, off you go now.’ Felicity and Molly walked over to where a very grown up looking person of 16 was stood, they were all marched off to there respective dormitories to begin unpacking.

Felicity and the rest of her alphabetic peers were in the yellow dormitory, ‘here we are girlies, there are twenty beds, take your pick now!’ said Louisawith a raised voice, she hurried out of the way to avoid injury in the scrum. Molly and Felicity managed to secure beds right next to each other much t the distate of Kimberly Mason who was a minature version of her sister Katie.
‘What’s her problem?’ Felicity whispered to Molly as they were unpacking.
‘Why?’ Molly asked, she hadn’t noticed the scowls, ‘Oh-she’s Kimberly Mason, went to the same drama school as me, you’ll know her sister, Katie.
‘That’s no reason to hate me already!’ exclaimed Felicity.
‘Know, but your pals with me and Katie’s my sister, Bernie’s enemy.’
‘Why?’
‘Snobbery, they are a pair of out an out snobs! Bernie and I are here coz my rich uncle pays. We are poor you see and the Masons don’t think there daughters should mix with us!’ said Molly angrily
Felicity’s eyes widened such things were trodden on, good and hard at the Chalet school, ‘How awful, it shouldn’t matter where someone come’s from, only their character should matter!’ exclaimed Felicity.
Molly nodded, ‘course – but lots of people don’t think that, my mum’s a cleaner and my dad an office clerk, the Mason’s father works in the stock market, some kind of banker. The mother doesn’t of course.’

After  that the girls were allowed the two remaining hours before supper for packing and making friends, by supper time Molly and Felicity had chummed up with tow others in their dorm called Penelope and Marie, both of who new nobody else, Penelope being from Scotland and Marie from the north. Penelope laid claim to a mass of bright red hair ad 5”6 inches, she was a retiring type who’s talents lay entirely in ballet. Marie claimed  two less inches than her new friend  but had a good deal more mouth, she never stopped chatting. The four seemed to click together instantly, much to the distaste of Kimberly Mason who had been separated from her bosom pal Natalie Benz.

Eventually the girls were lead into the dinning room, which had been decorated in sky blue, it had tables enough for 300 people so the food was served in two sittings juniors first and seconds, uppers, third-fifth form. The boys had been waiting anxiously for their meal and looked curiously at the girls who they were to have lessons with, one boy, very mature for his age took a special interest in felicity. Felicity and the rest of the new quartet sat down at a table and chatted excitedly. By and by eight prefects walked in Louisa Bowers lead them,
‘Good evening first years, I trust that you have all found a friend to enjoy supper with, if you pick up you plate, take it to the hatch you will be served, bring your plate back. There are no seconds as there is a desert today. That is all.’ Said Louisa.

(be patient Ally!)

Everyone at the Royal ballet school was obliged to learn two musical instruments, felicity had already been learning the Piano and she was to start the Flute in order to fulfil the requests of the school,
‘What instruments are you learning Molly?’ she asked.
‘Violin and Recorder, I’ve never learnt any before, I don’t think I will be much good!’
‘You will, you must be musical – not like Jessica Wayne!’
‘Who?’
‘A legend from my old school  - she was completely tone deaf!’ Felicity giggled.
‘Oh – I don’t think I could dance if I were that!

All ate the meal happily and afterward all the pupils either went for singing or instrument practise,
‘I’m off to have ago at Piano and do some vocal exercises Mol, see you at bed time, 9:15 isn’t it?’
‘Yep, that’s right, good luck! And don’t call me Mol!’

A little more to wet your appetites - chapter two, lessons and a row!

The next day dawned bright and clear, the sun over richmond park brought out it's natural beauty, Felicity woke up feeling happy and refreshed. It was 7:00 but as a chaletian she was used to rising early and none to phased, the same could not be said for the 4 other people in her dormintory.
'Come on Molly! Lazybones! Wake up do! We've got to go to breakfast!'
'Oh, go away little miss bossy boots!' groaned Molly in a friendly way.
'Leave our little commonerto sleep Felicity Maynard! She dosn't need to wash!' comented Kimberley who was already plaiting her long hair. Felicity paled at this meaness, she had never experienced less thean absolute popularity.
'Oh push off and find some posh gits to torment!' excalimed Molly who was keen to protect her innocent friend.
Marie pulled Felicity out of the firing line and allowed Molly and Kimberly to finish their bickering,
'Don't worry about it Felicity, its Molly, Kim hates - lets grab Penelope and Mol and go to breker, leave Kim to hersaelf!'
'Right, come on!' said Felicity.

Breakfast was taken in comparative peace although Kimberley managed to whisper her latest greivings to Natalie Benz, the conversation that took place not appeasing Felicity’s new enemy,
‘You’ll never guess what Molly Johns called me!’ commented Kim.
‘Won’t I? I suppose your going to tell me…’ yawned Natalie.
‘A posh git! Oh I hate them and Molly’s shoreditch accent!’
‘Leave it Kim, you’ll only get yourself into trouble for bullying!’ said Natalie sensibly, she held no affection for Molly and her friends but she didn’t have any quibbles with them.  Natalie however had planted an idea in Kimberley’s head.

Felicity’s first lesson was an hour of ballet for which they had to were black leotards and leggings, matching legwarmers and naturally ballet shoes. Felcity proudly scrapped her hair into the regulation tight bun, donned her outfit and followed her classmates into the hall.
‘Hello children, my name is Mrs Khan…’ A tall slim women of Indian origin began, ‘there should be seven of you here, when I call the register answer yes Mrs Kahn please. Bradley Andrews…Natalie Benz…Jack Lane…Kimberley Mason…Felicity Maynard…Molly Johns and Oliver Mc Veigh! Good, it looks like we have no mix up for once, spread out and we shall warm up!’ ordered the teacher finally.

The class obeyed; they were all happy youngsters as all had been put with someone in their dormitory or a known friend in the case of Kimberley and Natalie. Mrs Khan turned on some music that Felicity didn't recognies,

'right girls and boys, show me first position!' she ordered before walking around the class to examine the efforts of her new pupils. 'Nice turn out Kimberley, Fingers Felicity!' she said not seeing Kimberleys smirk. 'Bottom in Molly - we arn't trying to be ducks you know!' at that comment Kimberley felt that she would die with pleasure while Molly thought she would die of embarrasment. Felicity saw her new enemys delight at her friends discomfort and she directed a scowl at Kimberley that unfortunalley didn't go unnoticed.

'Felicity Maynard! Take that look off your face! Just beacuse you motheris a minor celebrity it dosn't mean that we are all impressed! You can't expect to be praised because of that, whatever might have been the case at The Chalet School!' was the teachers unjust reaction.

'Show me second...and third...fourth...fifth...sixth...' the teacher coninued all the while making pleasant and not so pleasant cooment to her 7 new pupils.

The lesson covered the basics of Ballet onto which they would build new skills - the lesson however had left the young Maynard feelong low and hard done by, she was used to justice and old fashioned values. The ballet was followed by break and a maths lesson which Felicity found easy thanks to her early well grounded education, Kimberley however found it hard and left the lesson feeling frustrated.

At lunchtime Felcity and Molly sat down together chattering happily about the content of their ballet lesson and speculating seriously aboiut their next one which was to take place that afternoon. Their talk however was interrupted by Proffeser Murlyn.

'Molly Johns! Felicity Maynard! Follw me to my office please!' he ordered, his face grim. in the office the pair sat down infront of his dark mahogony desk and waited for him to dettle himself on the larger more comfortable chair.

'Right - Maynard, explain your dispicable behaviour to me please.' he ordered, fully expecting a confession of a bullying campaign.

'I'm afraid i don't understand proffeser.' she stammered in reply, amazed at her own courage.

'Indeed, perhaps then you could explai Molly.' no?' 'Then perhaps you could explain why you have launched a bullying campaign against Kimberly and deliberalty excluded her in form and dormitory.' he replied sarcastically, a tone that Felicity was beginning to recognise.

'But we havn't!' Molly exclaimed, eyes flashing wildly. 'Kims' sister and my sister in 4th year are enemies because of your - um - different fathers jobs. Kim thought she would be friends with Flic coz her mums famous and her uncle has a kinghtship. But Flic isn't a snob and she was friends with me and Kim went all funny.

The head paused for a while before ringing through to his secratarys office, 'Send Kimberly Mason in now please.' he asked. Kimberly walked in, looking pious and triamphant.

'Hello, sit down. Explain why you will not be friends with Molly.' he ordered, seemingly having beleived Molly.

'I-er-I wont be friends with someone who lives in Shoreditch!' she yelled, realising she wouldn't win the battle.

'I see. In that case you will not be allowed to mix with your peers untill you see that how soemone is born matters not, it is what someone holds true that matters. I need to speak to you futrhter but i think we shal;l let these to go now.'

Chapter three - A few Letters.

Two weeks past and September turned into October, Kimberly had been told that she may  not mix with her peers under any circumstances until she had admitted that she was wrong. Her lessons were taken with the group above, an experience she found most degrading for she was told off for her lower standard, her meals were eaten in the medical wing and she slept in the Medical wing too.

Felcitiy Maynard was her mothers daughter and she vowed that she would be the one to sort out Kimberly so during letter writing time she wrote for some advice.

Dear Mamma

I can't beleive that i've only been here two months, so much has happened! I've made three good friends - they are already calling us the quartet, me, Mary, Penelope and Marie!I am in a dorm with them and a girl called kimberly Mason about whom i need some advice. She has a big sister in the fourth who is enemies with  Molly's big sister Bernie , the John's are poor you see and Kim dosn't think that she should be friends with Molly (or me!). We got into trouble for bullying  - we never would though  -Kim wont mix with us. Luckily the head worked out what was going on, because he beleived Molly but  now Kim wont appologise and change her mind and everyone says she will be expelled by half term if she dosn't and thats two weeks away! I don't want her to be expelled because itwill be my fault? What should i do?

My lessons are OK but i really am hopeless at Maths but i fing poetry beautiful - i think its a family thing. We don't do games like at the Chalet so i miss hockey and Netball but we can't risk injury.

I am looking forward to half term - it'll be nice to spend a week with Con, Roger and the boys, its a good Job Con and Roger are here for the duation, i shouldn't like to stay at school.

Say hello to everyone for me!

Lots of Love
Felicity

Joey sat back in her arm chair and sighed as she finished Felicitys letter, another of her babies was growing up-she was accepting her stay in london with courage worthy of an adult. She hadn't of course been told of the real reason she couldn't come home, money and will were a plenty in the Maynard household, the problem was Len.

***

Some days passed until Joey replied to her daughters letter,

My dearest darling Felicity,

I was glad to recieve your letter, we are all very well and the others send their greetings. I must my dear ask for your prayers onthe behalf of your eldest sister, she is expecting a baby (or two) next month and is a little poorly.

I am pleased you are happy with the half term arrangements, Len needs some quiet time and in any case it is a long expensive journey. We are indeed lucky that Copn has gone to launched an anthology of poetry, we wouldn't let you stay at school or with a stranger!

I assume you want the school news - Jack Lambert is headgirl and your bosom pall Mary-Ellen is highly bereft without you although i know you have written to her moe than us - your beloved family!

I know you want advice so i shall try to give it, it seems to me that your quatet has been a little neglectful, if accidently so be sure to be a little less cliquey if you can help it! Try talking to Natalie, make her see that there is nothing to be gained in snobbery - its her upbringing not her. I'm proud you want to tackle this Felicity is shows maturity beyond your years but be sure not to feel guilty if she is expelled. You will have done your best and saints can't do more!

Goodbye and God Bless.

love From
Mamma

Felicity mopped a damp eye as she finished reading the letter but her resolve was strong, she knew what she had to do - she was going to sort out the situation.

V good! Well written + original
Not to be rude to EBD or anything, but it's much more realistic than some CS bks. Because in CS everyone, except new girls sometimes, really likes eachother and is really nice + kind. This story is really good! MORE
