Title: First Name A-Z of Chalet Girls Post by Ally on Jul 4th, 2003, 9:52pm Firstly a few disclaimers I haven't always been consistent with names, eg Daisy Venables and Peggy Bettany are under these rather than Margaret, However, Len Maynard and Nella Ozanne are under Helena and Peronelle respectively Where there are EBDism's with names, I've used the most common form. The list includes: All Chalet girls Staff who were never pupils St Scholasika girls who were never pupils St Hilda girls (because they lived and breatheed the school for a year) Any girls likely to be future pupils | ||

It's not surprising really that there are so many EBDisms - with that many characters to keep track of, some are bound to go awry. When I teach children English I always advise them to have only 2 or 3 characters in their stories so that they can develop them fully. Good job I didn't teach EBD; I think we would have been the poorer for that advice! | ||

Typical EBD that they don't appear in the series proper. If I missed anyone else out it was because they were not termed pupil in the A-Z, and in the case of 'grandchildren' I wasn't sure how old they were, and so played on the side of caution. | ||

If anyone finds other charaters please let me know and I will insert in the correct place. But I would like to know what happened to these girls, why aren't they in the series proper *grrrr* Um KB, having the lists may be a little difficult as they are on paper. I only have excel on my work computer, and I didn't feel that I could get away with typing all that out whilst working. Intrigued to see Elizabeth von Arnim on the list. Has anyone else read the real Elizabeth von Arnim's books? That's 'Love', 'The Enchanted April', 'Mr Skeffington', 'Elizabeth and her German Garden' to name a few. They're good and I think she was writing around the same time as EBD- well, she'd have needed to, as there was a film of Skeffington made in the 1940s- so it's quite possible that EBD either knew of the author or had read her books. | ||

It's more or less done now. Enormous props to Ally for the character list in this thread, which is what I've based much of mine on, and to Lorraine for the info on her website which helped to fill in some blanks. There are more girls than appear in the A-Z list (plus the boys who attended the school!), but I'm sure I've missed people. Basically, the list is an excel spreadsheet listing:
It's a long way from being complete in terms of the "what happened next" and "forms" columns -- I think that'll be a work in progress. There are thirty-odd girls for whom I haven't been able to find a "first book", or any book at all! But I've only got transcripts of about half the books, so doing text searches for all hasn't been fruitful. I know there are also big gaps are far as the Staff are concerned -- filling those is the next "big" project, and I think KB's done some work that will be incredibly useful. I honestly don't know what possessed me to start it, and I doubt it'll ever be really finished. But if anyone'd like a copy -- and especially if they feel like filling in any blanks off the tops of their heads -- they're more than welcome to it. I've found it most useful in being able to sort through and find exactly the right girl based on my memory of her, but fanfic writers may find it useful, especially in terms of filling in minor characters of a certain age. I'd be especially happy to swop it for a transcript of Exile, if anyone has a spare they can email to me. Apparently I'm not content with the four print copies of the book I already own. | ||
