I've decided to follow the trend and post the last bit from before archiving as well as a tiny new bit. I don't think many of you saw the last bit anyway 'cos it was archived on the same night.

Half term had finished as planned for the girls. They hardly noticed Len’s absence, and by Len’s request the school at large was not informed as she did not want Isobel and Wendy affected by the reactions of the other girls. She had decided to tell her daughters what had happened after the end of term when they were together by themselves and could be a family once again.

The Wednesday after half term saw the first train come through and the girls were relieved to receive the much-awaited letters from home. Since the helicopter had brought in the main the week before nothing had arrived and most of them were eager to hear from their families. Mary-Jo and Polly were especially keen to see what the post brought as their birthday had now passed and they were anxious to see their present. They were not disappointed. Con had been in touch with a large office supplier in Interlaken and arranged for a good modern typewriter, complete with reams of paper, carbon in different colours, spare ribbons and correcting paper. She had also included a supply of staples, a stapler, different coloured folders, reporter’s pads, pens and pencils, a hole punch and treasury tags. The twins unpacked the box in amazement, awed that their mother had been so thorough in her generosity. This was more than they had expected and they were astounded at their fortune.
“We will be able to do everything we had planned,” gasped Polly as she looked at the heaps of stationary piled on the table in the common room.
“Let’s go and get the others. We can get started right away,” Mary-Jo twirled Polly round in her excitement and nearly sent her flying into the bookcase.
OK, OK, don’t throw me around like that, we don’t want matey on our case, do we?”

They grabbed the rest of IIIA and swarmed round the typewriter like bees round a honey pot. Polly inserted the fresh sheet and they all took a turn at typing their names. Mary-Jo and Polly were familiar with a typewriter, having used their mothers on a few occasions, and some of the others had attempted to type before, but for some of them it was their first attempt. Once they had all had a turn Polly whispered something to Mags and then called for the forms attention.
“You know that we asked mother for this because we wanted to start a juniors newspaper. She doesn’t know that exactly, but she has been able to send us everything we will need to get started. I’m going to give you a pad each to write your articles, and then when we have got enough stuff written we can start typing out our copies. We will need five copies if we are to do one for each junior form, which means typing it out three times, that will give an extra copy for the common room too.” Polly finished in a rush, and Mags took over.
“I’m suggesting that we appoint the twins as joint editors since their mum does the job and it’s their typewriter, and we will all need to do some of the typing, but if we aim for an issue every 10 days or so it won’t be too much for us. So lets get started.”
For the rest of the week IIIA could be found in nooks and crannies scribbling in their pads and the clatter of typing was heard throughout their free time as they all took every opportunity to practice their typing. It was a week before they had their first issue ready, but surveying how much material they had written ready, they thought they would be able to do the second quite soon, and so Emily typed on the end, ‘ watch for our next issue, coming soon.’
They took the first issue early one morning and left a copy in the desk of the form prefect in each junior form; then they waited nervously to see what the reaction would be.

“What has got into the juniors this morning?” asked Miss Charlesworth as she entered the staff room after a gruelling session with IIIB. “They appear to have taken leave of their senses, and as for concentration, it leaves a lot to be desired at the best of times, and today, best left unsaid.”
“Hmm, IIIA were rather giggly themselves, is this just the thirds, or has it infected the lower forms?” mused Ruey.
“I don’t know about the others but lower second defiantly had their minds elsewhere. I caught Alison Carey putting her paintbrushes away without checking the end of the tube; as she put them in one end they dropped out the other and the young ass didn’t realise and just continued dropping them in. When I asked what she was doing she looked in puzzled amazement at the pile of brushes and said, ‘How did they get there?’” Rosalind Yolland finished this tale with a smile, Alison’s excuse for not checking her tube had been ‘I didn’t think’ a phrase her mother had made her own during her years at the school and whilst Miss Yolland herself had not known Carola she had heard plenty about that lady’s exploits.
“Sounds like trouble brewing,” sighed Ruey, being the only junior form mistress present, and with a dawning certainty that if there was trouble it looked as if her lambs were as mixed up in it as any of the others. “I suppose some discrete investigations may be due.”

Ruey did some poking around and asked some subtle questions of her form, but to no avail. Over the next few days the juniors slowly calmed down.. Over the next few days the juniors slowly calmed down. Then other family news took her attention. It was a few days after the initial excitement that Len grabbed Ruey as she was leaving the staff table at mittagessen. “Can Holly be spared from games this afternoon. Mamma wants her to go for tea. I think that there may be a surprise for her.”
“You mean,” Ruey paused expectantly, but Len was not to be drawn.
“I think Holly has the right to be first, just send her to the study after rest will you. Oh, and tell her she’s not in trouble, I remember how easily a summons to the study can lead to a general feeling of guilt.”
Holly went to the study in anticipation, she believed her form mistresses reassurance, but could not think of any reason she should be sent for. She knocked on the door, and entered when she heard Len’s quiet “Herein.”
Holly was just completing her curtsey when she caught sight of the slender young girl stood looking at her quizzically.
“Mummy, but why are you here?” shouted Holly as she ran across the room to receive her mother’s hug.
“That’s a nice greeting. I’ve got some news for you. I was going to tell you at half term, but since you were snowed in it had to wait until I was able to take a day off work and come up here. Now, go and get your outside things, your Grandmother Jo is expecting us shortly.”
“Really. What about Hockey?”
“That is excused, as is prep,” replied Len with a grin, noting that her niece had not even considered the later.

Holly and Rose walked across to Freudesheim a few minutes later. Holly was full of school news, pointing out various features of the school to her mother, and telling her how they had spent half term. It was not until they were walking through the rose garden that she suddenly remembered and stopped still turning to Rose, who almost fell over her, saying, “What was the news, and why couldn’t you just write me a letter.”
“Watch what you are doing, you almost had me over then. You remembered what I said did you. I thought you were more bothered about missing Hockey.”
“Well I might make the form team if I practice a little. There are more than enough of us in the form and I’ve never played before coming here, but I was reserve in our last game and Emily said that if I’d been playing as long as them, they started when they entered the third form, then I’d probably be in the team already. I do run quickly.”
“Your tongue certainly does,” replied Rose dryly. “Ring the bell there’s a dear,” she added as they reached the front door. This was unnecessary however since Joey had been watching for them, and the door was opened before Holly could ring.
“Welcome, welcome,” gushed Joey as she enveloped the two in her arms.

It was a quiet Holly who returned to the school for abendessen, refusing to answer even the 4C’s queries and she went to bed early that evening pleading a headache. She was not sure how to take the news her mother had brought. Grandmother Jo seemed pleased, and her mother seemed to be also, but Holly was wary of the further upheaval to her life that this news could bring.

A week to the day the excitement had first been noticedamong the juniors it began again. Ruey was more watchful this time and noticed that her form seemed to be infected with it much earlier. This gave her some food for thought, but threw no light onto the puzzle. She was worried that IIIA may be at the root of the trouble, but as yet had no inkling of what was causing it.

The following weekend Holly was invited to Freudesheim for Saturday. She had spent most of the week with a slight sick feeling in her stomach at the anticipated event, and if she had realised how lenient the staff were being with her over her prep she would have been surprised. This time she was escorted by Len. They entered by the back door, and Len sent Holly along to the salon, making the excuse that she wanted to speak to Anna. Holly stood outside the salon door, wondering what would happen when she entered. Realising that she couldn’t put it off any longer she turned the handle and went in.

She saw her mother seated in a basket chair to one side of the roaring log fire that Grandmother Jo liked to have in her salon. Stood on the other side, with an easy manner that spoke of being familiar with the place was a tall, fair young man. He looked at her expectantly, with a welcoming smile and then turned to Rose. Rose herself held out her hands to draw Holly to her, and turning her to face the stranger said, “Holly, this is your father, Mike Maynard. Mike, this is Hollly.”

The rest of the day passed in a blur to Holly. Len and Grandmother Jo had obviously decided to give the young family as much time alone as possible and absented themselves for much of the day, only appearing at mealtimes. Holly found it very awkward, her mother and Mike had obviously written to each other a few times, and Mike asked her all about school and her friends, but they were strangers and even Rose and Mike seemed to find it difficult to make conversation, until that is Mike proposed showing them around the house. Holly found this offer a little odd, but Rose accepted and Mike led them up stairs, and then along a corridor to a little door that led to more stairs. These stairs led to the attics. Mike took them right to the top and after showing them the view across the valley towards the Jungfrau, began to show them some of the treasures he had stored there, toys and memorabilia from his boyhood. Looking at the things he had treasured drew the three of them closer together, and by the time came for Holly to return to school they were laughing together. As Holly was putting on her coat Mike came and led her into the study for a moments privacy. Holly looked at him wondering what he had to say.
“Look here Holly, I haven’t got mamma’s way with words, but I want you to know that even though I wasn’t around for you before, I will be now that I know. I’d love it if you would write to me occasionally, and let me write to you. A father ought to know his daughter after all. I know that you are surrounded by my family here, and that Rose is only in Interlaken, not another country, but I would be privileged to be part of your life as well.”
Holly didn’t know what to say to this, and was spared the necessity of a response by Joey walking in and saying brightly, “There you are Holly, you must get your skates on. Len is waiting to get back to school, and it doesn’t look good for the head to be late to prayers, what would Miss Annersley say.”
Holly giggled at this thought and hurried off. All the same she stored up Mikes words and was pleased to have met her father. On returning to school she found that Miss Richardson had told the rest of the form where she was and why and had warned them not to discuss the situation with her unless she brought it up herself. This gave her some relief, having inherited Mike and Len’s desire to deal with personal issues in privacy.

It was unfortunate that on the third week of the newspaperthat Kathie Ferrars had to take the thirds for geography. Her junior, Liz Strutter was in Interlaken with a nagging tooth that had developed into a full-blown abscess. Matey had arranged an emergency dental appointment and had packed her off onto the train. This left Kathie teaching both thirds. She had a tough time with IIIA, fully aware that their thoughts were everywhere else but in a geography lesson. She finished the lesson by wiping the board and doing a stand up quiz on the content of the lesson, rivers of Europe. As question after question was passed or only half answered her face grew grimmer, and she stopped, leaving the class on their feet, and treated them to a lecture that lasted through into break, leaving them little time for their milk and biscuits.
Holly grabbed her milk and biscuits and dashed them down before returning to the form room, hoping for a few minutes to herself. The post that morning had brought a letter in an unfamiliar hand. She guessed that it was the promised letter from Mike, and wanted to read it away from prying eyes. It was a brief letter; saying how pleased he had been to meet her at last and describing how he had escorted her mother back to Interlaken on the Sunday. He had then gone on to tell her a little about the navy and about his current posting at HMS Raleigh the basic training camp for naval recruits. She read this through and decided that she would reply that evening when the 4C’s entered the room in a body. She put the letter hurriedly into her pocket and returned to the business of the day.

After being able to drink only half of a scalding coffee Kathie was therefore not in the best of moods when she entered IIIBafter the break. She caught sight of something being hurriedly pushed into a desk, but as most of the girls were out of their seats began the lesson with a short diatribe on being ready when the mistress arrived. This should have warned IIIB, but it only quashed them for a few minutes. Kathie was surprised to find that the girls were giving each other surreptitious glances across the room, and there was even some giggling. Kathie was unused to this; her lessons were normally renown for their discipline, and she found this inattention disturbing. As the lesson progressed her face grew more severe and as girl after girl had to be rebuked for not paying attention. She decided that this was no co-incidence and gave them the same lecture she had given IIIA, condemning the luckless juniors to join the other thirds in spending their breaks for the rest of that week in threading needles, a task she said should teach them to concentrate.“What is going on with your third forms?” demanded Kathie angrily of Ruey and Lucy, the respective form mistresses as she flung her books onto her desk at the end of the morning.
“Our third forms?” queried Ruey, “Has someone been upsetting you?”
Kathie stood by the little coffee table that was nestled amongst the chairs in the staff room and looked down at Ruey and Lucy who were seated companionably discussing possible removes between the A and B streams. A box of chocolates stood open on the table next to their form lists and Lucy handed it to Kathie with a smile, “You look as if you need these. Come on, spill. What have our charges been doing to cause this reaction?”
Kathie didn’t move. The sight of the two form mistresses laughing and eating chocolate when she had been tearing out her hair over their forms behaviour was like a red rag to her.
“No, I don’t want chocolate, I don’t want sympathy, I want you two to do your jobs and find out why your forms have been so badly behaved this morning, and for the last few weeks from what I hear.” She stormed away, saying over her shoulder, “Oh, they are threading needles every break this week, I think you had better arrange some supervision for them.”  Kathie eventually settled at her desk and buried herself in marking sixth form essays, a solitary occupation. She had been seeking solitary activities a lot recently and was becoming a familiar sight in the staff room, hunched shoulders, facing the wall, sat at her desk in the corner, effectively shutting out the world.

Ruey and Lucy looked at one another, and smothered their own giggles. “All the same, we know there is something going on,” commented Ruey, “we ought to have got to the bottom of it by now. I’ve asked around and even wondered into the common room on the odd occasion. I’ve caught sight of lots of paper being hurriedly scrunched up, but I know they have all been practicing on Polly and Mary-Jo’s typewriter and I put I down to that. I wonder if there is something more to it.”
“Could be, with your form at least. Mine seem to settle down each week and then it’s as if something sets them off again and they hit the roof for a few days. There is a definite pattern. I’ve caught sight of a lot of pieces of paper as well.”
“Hmm,” Ruey considered this and then made a suggestion, “I think that it might be time for IIIA to have a desk and locker check this afternoon. I would suggest you do the same with IIIB. If nothing else it will mean tidiness inspections are done, and might just throw up something more interesting.”

Chicken feed to some of you, but not to me. When I first joined I wondered how any of you managed it, after reading KB abd Vikki's conversations I know, but I still want to celebrate and this lemon chicken, fried rice and prawn toast will do the job nicely.

IIIA returned to their classroom that afternoon to find Miss Richardson waiting for them.
“Please remove all the items from your desks and place them in a neat pile on your chair. Then empty your locker and place all the items in the same pile,” were her bland instructions. Most of IIIA smothered a gasp at this, and cast a look at their form mistress. Ruey was busy at her desk, keeping her face expressionless as she watched the class, “Hurry girls, we want to get this finished soon and waste as little time as possible.”
The form moved as slowly as they thought they could get away with. The piles grew as the desks emptied, and bits of paper and copies of the newspaper were pushed inside textbooks in the hopes they would escape the eagle eyes of their form mistress. Then the same process with their lockers. Once the girls had finished Ruey bid them line up at the side of the classroom and walked over to the first pile. This belonged to Cheryl who by some stroke of good fortune had left her reporters pad and all her pieces of paper in the common room. After flicking through her books Miss Richardson bade her come and tidy away. The next desk she went to belonged to Helen, here the reporters pad was discovered. Miss Richardson held it up, “Is this anything to do with you school work Helen?”
“No, Miss Richardson.”
“Then it should not be in the class room. Please remove it at the end of the afternoon.”
This was all that was found in Helen’s desk, and the class held their breath as Miss Richardson moved onto Polly’s desk. Ruey felt the tension rising, and knew that there was something to be found. She moved the stationary to one side, then the exercise books, and discovered Polly’s pad.
“There seems to be a spate of these pads. Has anyone else got one in her desk?” She noted the hands of about two thirds of the class rise, “The same applies. Only things relevant to your lessons should be in the classroom. I take it these are not?”
“No Miss Richardson,” mumbled the class, hoping that she would not open one of the pads. Ruey had guessed that the pads were important, but determined to carry on her investigations before deciding whether or not to look at the contents of the pads. She hoped that it would not be necessary.

“Will you all please place the pads on my desk before I continue.”
This was done quickly, and looking at the size of the pile Ruey wondered what was to come.
“Would any of you like to add anything to this pile now, anything that should not be in the classroom.” The girls at the front started to look around.
“No!” Ruey’s voice was sharp as she snapped out the order, “Eyes front please. This is not for discussion.”
There was a deathly silence, before first one and then another of the girls crept across to their desks and removed folders and papers from the small piles on their chairs adding them to the larger one on the mistresses desk.

“I see,” her voice had now grown steelier than they had ever heard it. “Would one of you like to explain the meaning of all this, or will I have to read through all these bits and pieces?” she said gesturing with a flick of her finger towards the heap on the desk. IIIA fidgeted around and no one spoke. Miss Richardson moved towards her desk and picked up the first thing she placed her hand on, but before she opened the folder Mary-Jo took a deep breath, “Miss Richardson, we, er. Well we wanted to.” She dried up before she got any further, but Polly came to her twins rescue, “It was a newspaper,” she added.

Miss Richardson looked down at her desk in a little confusion. “What kind of newspaper exactly?” she enquired.
“Just for Juniors,” Emily put in.
Then Daisy added “We wrote it ourselves. All of it.”
“I presume you then distributed it to the other Juniors, every week?” Enlightenment was slowly dawning on Ruey. It was at this point that Lucy entered the room. She held a bunch of ‘Just for Juniors’.
“I collected these from my form and the other junior forms. You may find them very interesting reading.”
“Thank-you. I have just been hearing all about it.”
Lucy looked at the mistress’s desk and twigged what had happened. “I will leave these for you to read at your leisure.”

Ruey nodded absently whilst she pondered what to do. She was impressed at their enterprise, but appalled at their cheek. A glimpse at the newspaper showed her that the current issue contained articles on the amount of prep, the problems with prefects and the iniquity of Matey keeping all the sweets.
“I cannot decide what to do about this until I know the extent. I will take all these to the staff room and let you know tomorrow. I may refer the matter to Mrs Entwistle and Miss Annersley. You are to remain in silence until further notice.

Aargghhh.

I couldn't find my plan when I wrote that last episode, and now I'm realising that those three weeks were important for someone else and that I meant to intersperse the newspaper with another storyline. Since I've posted it, what can I do?

I know I could re-write after I'd finished, but would you mind if I jumped back in time and re wrote, or rather added some scenes in the middle of some of the bits above.

*vowing to never write anything again*

OK, I will be going back and modyfying my posts to include the story I left out. I'll do it in a different coulour and all at once, then I'll let you know what post no to start re-reading at.
It will be additions rather than changes, what has happened will happen, but other things need to happen at the same time, and to some of the same people.

This is all presuming that my additions don't make any of the posts too long, but I'll cross that bridge if I come to it.

Since I'll try to make all the changes at once, it is likely to be Sunday teatime before I can get it ready for posting. (UK time.)

Looking forward to my extra hour.

Sorted it at last!

If you go back and look at post numbers 10, 11 and 12 you will be able to see the things I've added in blue.

It took some doing as in order to stop the posts being to long I had to fiddle around with the other posts. They may show up as modified. but all that's been done is stuff that was in the previous post or the next one has been moved there to make room for the additions. It's the blue stuff that is new.

Hope you think it was worth all the effort. It was to me since I wouldn't have been satisfied if I'd had to leave it out.

Ruey brushed the pile of papers, files and notebooks into a large box and carried them away to the staff room. Once there she poured them out onto a table and surveyed IIIA’s latest. Lucy came to join her and the two quickly became engrossed in reading and reviewing the various articles and editions of the paper.
“There might be some colossal cheek here, but what they have achieved is phenomenal. They have managed to produce three editions, with enough copies for each junior class, filled with articles they have written themselves, and even included puzzles and letters to the editor. Their class marks haven’t suffered that much either. Apart from the distraction that is,” finished Ruey with a laugh.
“Does that mean you’ll let them carry on?” Lucy looked at her older colleague with a mischievous glint in her eye.
“Of course not, well not yet anyway. The question of their cheek must be considered as well. I know every child grumbles about some of these things, that’s all well and good, but some of these articles are unacceptable. Look at this one,” she handed over a sheet to Lucy as she spoke, and Lucy, burst into laughter as she read through the short list, “The most boring lessons of the week. Glad to see I don’t feature.”
“No, neither do I, but games is popular. Imagine if some of the other’s saw this. It explains why they played Kathie up so badly, this was in this mornings edition and she features rather heavily for the session she gave the entire juniors on river formation.”
It was unfortunate that Kathie should walk into the staff room at that point and overhear her name. Spying the two third form mistresses she stalked over to see if they had solved the problem of their forms misbehaviour.
“What is all this, it looks as if someone has emptied a juniors desk here?”
“It actually the result of my form emptying their desks in the classroom. This little haul is the cause of their distraction. IIIA have set themselves up in the newspaper business,” replied Ruey offering Kathie a copy in which she did not feature. Kathie however held out her hand towards Lucy who felt obliged to hand over the sheet she had in her hand. “What else could I do?” she pleaded when Ruey remonstrated with her later. Kathie’s face grew red with anger and embarrassment as she read the offending article and then with an incensed “We will see about this,” bursting from her lips she left the room with her skirts flying about her and slamming the door so hard that a pile of exercise books on a nearby shelf slid across the shelf and onto the floor.

“That’s put the cat amongst the pigeons,” observed Lucy as she watched Kathie go.
“That’s an understatement. I hope she has gone to the heads and not to IIIA.”
“Do you think that’s likely?”
“I don’t know,” Ruey was suddenly thoughtful, “She hasn’t been very happy this term from what I’ve seen and is becoming more apt to act on her own. If she goes to IIIA in that mood I dread to think what might happen. Can you take this lot to the study, she may have gone there and explain what has happened. I’ll check IIIA and if they are safe from avenging wrath I’ll join you.” This plan made, the two junior mistresses left.

Ruey made her way towards IIIA, her mind busy with the possibilities of what might be happening, and what the consequences would be. She was only halfway down the corridor when she heard Miss Ferrars raised voice. She moved quickly towards her classroom where she found the entire form stood behind their desks, some weeping and others looking either mutinous or angry. Hearing the geography mistress’ unvarnished opinion of them had not been pleasant and it appeared as if she would be setting them a swinging punishment for their cheek. It was with some relief that they saw Miss Richardson at the door, hoping that angry as they already knew her to be, she would at least ensure they were treated fairly.
“Miss Ferrars, could I have a word with my form please?” she asked politely.
Miss Ferrars ice cold eyes blazed. “If you must, but I have by no means finished with them, they will think long and hard before cheeking a mistress again.”
Miss Richardson nodded and then faced IIIA, “I have had a good look at the material confiscated from your desks and have referred the case to the heads. I am afraid that you will have to wait for their judgement. Please remember that you are in silence until called to the study.” She then turned to her colleague, and said in an undertone “I thought that this was serious enough to bring the heads into. Mrs Hamilton has taken all the material to the study, would you like to join us there?”
It took a moment for Miss Ferrars to gain control of her emotions, but when she did she nodded curtly and the two left the room together. It was regrettable that as they left Jonquil heard her muttering to Miss Richardson “I hope that it will be Miss Annersley and not Mrs Entwistle that deals with them. Len is related to them all and far more likely to let them off.” She stored this comment up, and passed it on to the rest of the form as soon as they were out of silence.

Ruey had not been able to resist replying to the comment and drawing herself up to her full height looked the irate mistress in the eye, “I think you forget that I am also related to them, and have never found it to be any problem. Len will treat them justly, but I have no doubt that Hilda will be involved if that makes you feel any better.” The pair had then marched to the heads study in the same thick foreboding silence that was present in the form room.

They knocked and entered the study to find Lucy sat in the window seat with Len and Hilda at the desk looking through the material, passing certain items back and forth between themselves and conferring in low tones. Lucy looked up from her magazine and waved them both over to join her, standing and pulling up a chair for Kathie. She quietly told the pair that the heads wanted to look at the newspapers for themselves before deciding what should be done about it. They sat looking at the magazines always kept in the heads study waiting for the two heads to finish conferring.  It was about 20 minutes later that Miss Annersley and Mrs Entwistle joined them.
“They are certainly enterprising,” commented Miss Annersley as she accepted the coffee that Ruey had just brewed in the little kitchen attached to the study. “However that has to remain in the background for the moment. Now that it has been brought to our attention we cannot pass over the cheek.”
“I would hope not.” Kathie was determined on this point.
“There are comments in here about a good number of the staff, the prefects, seniors and even Matey that need addressing,” Len added, “it would be impossible for each of them to render individual apologies to everyone concerned, but we do need to make the punishment fit the crime.”
Miss Annersley agreed and added, “We will have them here tomorrow, after prayers to pass sentence, but in the meantime Ruey please see that they are sent to bed immediately after prayers tonight. Kathie, could you please go through each of these three issues and ask all the staff mentioned in any way to join us here tonight, I think we had better discuss this together before any rumours spread. I know we can trust you three to keep the matter to yourselves for the time being.”
The meeting that evening was a rowdy one. Some of the staff were amused by the articles they read, others were angry at the way they had been described or talked about. Miss Annersley and Mrs Entwistle let the staff have their heads for a short time and then called the meeting to order. There was a wide variety of sentence suggested from the mild to severe, and a few that were even more extreme. Some of the younger staff found the whole thing a bit of a joke and suggested such extreme physical punishments as dangling out of the upper story windows by their toenails. Eventually a decision was reached and it remained only for the heads to implement it.

“Len, did you notice how quiet Kathie was tonight?” queried Miss Annersley as they were tidying the heads sitting room after the rest of the staff had left.
Len heaved a sigh; “I’ve been rather worried about her all term. She seems very dissatisfied with life at the moment. Ruey is very guarded, but I gather they have had words on a few occasions. The worst of it is that she has had some kind of argument with Nancy.”
“Kathie needs Nancy. She is a stabilising influence on her and always has been. I wonder what caused it,” mused Hilda meditatively.
“Neither of them will say. Nancy just says she cannot speak for Kathie and Kathie says she doesn’t want any butting in. Something will have to give soon or her health will begin to suffer. I don’t particularly relish the thought of Matey on my back because of that. I want her to be happy anyway, and I’m sure she is anything but at the moment. However she has made it perfectly clear that my help is not required. It seems to be especially my help as well.” Len was careful to try and present events as fairly as she could.
Hilda paused, straightening a pile of magazines before replying, “I hope she has not been rude to you. That will be one of the most difficult things for you to learn as head. There will be times when you have to distance yourself slightly from the rest of the staff, especially if it looks like there may be a discipline issue.”
“Hmm, that is a part I’m not looking forward to. She hasn’t quite overstepped the mark yet, just reminded me of my own fallibility. I have tried to give her a little space in the hope that she may eventually sort things out, but it doesn’t look like that is going to happen.” She dropped into a chair, exhausted and ran her fingers through her hair. “I think I may go at it with a different tack. I have an idea that might work.”
Hilda smiled at her, “Leave it until morning, we both need some sleep now.”

The two heads went to their respective bedrooms, but Hilda at least was to sleep, not immediately anyway. She had received a letter this morning and wanted to read it through before putting it away carefully in her box. These letters were treasured not only because of whom they were from, but also because of the sentiments contained. They helped her to remember that she was loved, cherished even, and that her sacrifice had been appreciated and valued.

Here's a little bit I wanted out of the way before turning my attention to Kathie, and Joey, and Jem, and Mike.

Justice was dealt with swiftly the following morning. IIIA trailed miserably to the study after prayers and heard Mrs Entwistles opinion of their conduct, then once they were all bitterly aware of their sins Miss Annersley proceeded to dole out their sentence. They found themselves condemned to producing an essay each on the history of newspapers, to be submitted in their best handwriting before the end of the week and to include references to at least two of the big daily papers the school took. This would take up a sizable chunk of their free time and to crown it all they were to be supervised in their free time by a mistress or prefect until the head thought they could be trusted to use it wisely again. They were also to each produce a written apology for their rudeness, which would be circulated amongst those they had cheeked. They left the study much chastened and were noticeably quieter for the rest of the term.

“It was a good idea,” commented Len to Miss Annersley, “I might see if we can find a way to revive it next term. The girls are entitiled to their opinions on school life, and if a mistress or prefect oversaw it then the rudeness would disappear. It may even be a good exercise for them, non-fiction writing and all that.” She raised an eyebrow questioningly at her senior as she said this.
“It could be a good thing certainly. I sometimes think that the juniors get overlooked a little in the way we deal with the girls, most of our most events and more exciting happenings are aimed at the middles,” was Miss Annersley’s encouraging reply.
Len chuckled then, “Well you certainly can’t say that IIIA intend to be left out. They have led the juniors by the nose this term for better as well as worse.”
“Yes, they are a good bunch on the whole. I have always found that girls like them will eventually channel their energies into something good if they are given the chance. I think our role is to provide them with the opportunities.”

why did I post that the first time without remembering to paste the story in.

Re Times Ed- yes it was around. There's even a comment in one of the later books about the prefects finding it in the middle's common room and being surprised cos they'd always thought it lived in the staff room. And presumably it would have had those vacancies advertised.

“Hello Folks, I’ve turned up again like the proverbial bad penny,” breezed Joey as she wondered into the staff room one evening shortly after the discovery of IIIA’s latest. The staff looked around and then returned to their own pursuits, each hoping that this would be a short visit.
“Come and have some coffee Auntie Joey,” called Ruey from across the room where she was sat with a few of the more active mistresses who were helping her draw up team lists for the hockey tournament to be held just before the end of term. She rose and pulled up a chair for Joey, and exchanged glances with Lucy who then went and brought Joey a coffee. “How are you keeping Auntie Joey?” asked Lucy, who like many of the Platz children had used this courtesy title since childhood.
“Busy, my dear, busy, just as I like it. I’ve been writing the first book in the new series I was commissioned to do. I’ve been burying myself in Nicholas Nickleby. I’ve also been starting a new adventure story. The publishers said they want something more up to date so it’s set in a large city and I’m also beginning to think about next years Christmas play. Then I’ve been spending a lot of time at the San and entertaining some of the student doctors. They are so cramped in their accommodation. I believe they have had to change some of the offices into residential rooms for the students, and they do like some home cooking now and again. I take over some cakes whenever Anna bakes. I do enjoy being with young people, but then again that’s why I always say I’ll be a Chalet girl when I’m in my bathchair. I’m looking forward to the pantomime. I know Felicity put in a lot of hard work with them before she went off to see Margot. Why she didn’t wait until after the show I don’t understand. I hope she comes home soon, I’m rattling around in that house by myself.” At this point Joey ran out of breath and took a huge swig of the coffee that had been cooling in her hands. “Why, this coffee is cold. It is a shame we can’t enjoy Mlle’s nectar anymore.” Lucy exchanged a rueful look with Ruey and began to get up to refresh Joey’s cup.
“No matter, I’ll get myself another one. I can’t stay her chatting with you girls all night. I want a quick word with Kathie.” With this she rose and crossed the room, taking a fresh cup of coffee and selecting the seat next to Kathie’s corner desk where Kathie was to all appearances buried in her work. Joey, for all her present garrulity had a good deal of insight and had realised that something was wrong with the mistress. Thus it was with the best of intentions that she began a conversation with Kathie, asking her how the term was going. Kathie, no desire to be drawn into conversation muttered a gruff “Ok,” before turning back to her desk. Joey had never been easily rebuffed and this was still the case.
“You seem to be a bit of a loner these days dear. Have you and Nancy quarrelled?”
“That’s none of your business. Would you mind please, I would like to finish this marking tonight.” Kathie was careful not to make a scene with the headmistress’s mother, but was annoyed at the interference.
“I don’t want to interfere, but I can see you are unhappy and would like to help if I can.”
Kathie fought manfully against the anger at the intrusion and managed to contain it barely. “My affairs are my own, and I do not choose to discuss my friendships with you, or with anyone else here.”
Joey was about to reply softly to this, when she caught sight of the Times Educational Supplement open on Kathie’s desk at the situations vacant, several of the advertisements being ringed. “I say,” she remarked in her usual bell like ringing tones, which reached across the staff room, “You’re not thinking of leaving us are you. We like to hang onto our teachers here, especially the good ones. It would be a shame if you left.”
As Ruey remarked whern recounting the episode to Len, that put the cat amongst the pigeons, and after hearing the uproar from the staff Kathie stalked off to find a little peace and quiet in her own room.

How much more of this shall I let you have now?

Hmm, about this much I think.

Jem ran his fingers through his hair and groaned as he sat at his desk and looked at the building plans. The San had gained a good reputation as a training hospital, and with the treatments they had developed for TB working alongside their expertise in dealing with winter sports injuries and in orthopaedics there was as much demand for training places as there was for patient places. The medical school was overfull and Jem could not find any more land to build on. The rise in female students also meant that two sets of student accommodation had to be found. He had consulted with his buildings manager and they had found a few rooms by converting some offices, but they still needed more space.
“What is really needed is a student hostel,” Herr Gellersen had said, “The trouble is, there are no spare chalets on the Platz, and no space to build.
“Let me think about it Johann, I may have a seed of an idea,” said Jem thoughtfully. The manager had left, and Jem had scoured the plans one last time, wondering if his idea would be possible, and if there was any alternative.

Holly danced excitedly into IIIA one morning towards the end of term, “I’ve had another letter from my father, and I’m going to spend the Easter hols at Grandmother Jo’s with him. He’s managed to wrangle some compassionate leave from his CO, and will be here for the whole hols, and mum will be able to come up each weekend.”
“That’s great Holly,” replied Elizabeth, “Uncle Mike knows every inch of the Platz and some super walks higher up. With the weather improving he will be able to take you all over the place.”
“Polly and I will be here for the last two weeks as well,” added Mary-Jo. “We are going home to London when we break up, but are coming back with mother over Easter weekend. I don’t know how long she will stay, but we will come back to school from Grandmother Jo’s

Hilda walked along the path towards St Cecilie, glad to be able to walk under her own steam again. Whilst she had recovered and been thought fit by the school at large, she had been worried about walking outdoors during the icy weather, fearful of what may happen if she lost her footing. Now the spring had finally arrived she was much surer of herself and keen to get out and about again. As she walked she rehearsed the term’s events in her mind. She was pleased with IIIA, they were beginning to show character and to pull together leading the Junior school by the nose. Len too had a taken a good hold of the reins, and she looked forward to seeing some of the changes Len had suggested implemented. There was to be a staff meeting that night which Len would lead, at which some curriculum changes would be announced.

Hilda mused about what the other staff would make of the evenings announcements. She was confident that Nancy would now support Len, and knew from some comments she had heard from other staff that the majority of the announcements would be welcome and indeed had been anticipated. The only staff member she was unsure of was Kathie. Hilda had tried to get alongside Kathie, but would not force a confidence that was not forthcoming. She recognised that Kathie was seriously unhappy, but the mistress had avoided being alone with her and Hilda was now wondering whether to push a little harder and see if she could get Kathie to trust her. “It does seem that suddenly the trust that was there had evaporated. It’s as if she suddenly feels alone and against the world, and therefore has to be very defensive.” Seeing no immediate solution she put the problem resolutely behind her and turned her thoughts elsewhere.

A letter had arrived for her that morning that had made her think very deeply about the future. She had carefully stored it with the other letters from her treasured correspondent, but was able to remember what was contained in the few simple paragraphs. There had been a simple request, to consider the future. Hilda had never flinched from doing the right thing, which accounted for her current situation. The problem she now faced was that whatever decision she made, she could hurt one or another of her oldest friends.

The staff room had been prepared for the meting in the usual way, pushing some of the tables together in the middle of the room to make a larger table, and the chairs placed round in a circle. The coffee was filtering and the staff were discussing possible reasons for a meeting so late in the term. There was a merry buzz about the chatter as most of the staff were friends of long-standing and the newcomers like June had found their slot. June and Lucy were sat down one side of the circle, Lucy having lowered herself into a comfortable chair with some difficulty. “Oh, I’ll be glad when term ends,” she said. “I’m so tired and achy all the time now.”
June looked at her considerable girth and laughed, “Are you sure you will make it until the end of term?”
“I should, but given how I feel now I really couldn’t say.”

Len entered the room along with Hilda and Bill, and with a slight flush took the seat at the head of the table that had normally been reserved for Hilda. The other two purposely took seats apart, slightly further down the table. Some of the older staff raised their eyebrows, realising that this signified Hilda and Bill conceding authority to Len. Nancy caught Hilda’s eyes, and gave her a smile and a nod, then taking her seat as senior mistress next to Len, she turned to her and whispered, “Go for it, Len. We’re all behind you.”

Len acknowledged Nancy with a smile, and then rapped on the table to draw the meeting to order.
“I know you are all wondering why there is a staff meeting so late in the term. The simple reason is that I wanted to tell you of some new curriculum innovations we will be introducing next term and to get your feedback in time to consider it before the beginning of the new term. This seemed a better idea than springing it on you at the usual beginning of term meeting. Goodness knows there is enough to do then as it is.” Len gave a laugh as she said this, and looked around the circle of staff.
“The first announcement is that next term we will be joined by two new members of Staff. Felicity will be making permanent the assistance she gave in the Christmas term and earlier this term. She will teach dancing to all classes as part of their games and gym classes. She will also offer special ballet lessons to be taken as an extra, and will of course assist with our productions. As a line of reporting she will be part of the games department and will be junior to Reuy. This is mainly a matter of form; she will take gym occasionally, but will not be teaching games.
“The second new member of staff is an old girl whom I am sure many of you will remember. Jack Lambert will be joining us to teach Physics and to give special engineering classes to those seniors who show an interest. She will be part of the science department, and will also run the school workshop that is to be set up in the old garages. This will be available to all girls who have a bent towards tools, tinkering with machinery, woodwork and the like. Some of you may remember the models jack used to make with the fretsaw. She says that she will set it up properly after seeing what interests the current girls have, so this will be very basic to start with.

“The other curriculum changes will affect everybody to a greater or lesser degree,” continued Len, “The main change is to include a full period of form time each week. This will be with your own forms and there is a range of curriculum materials for you to choose from, appropriate to different ages. For the relevant forms this will give you opportunity to discuss dealing with exam stress, revision and applying for university or training places, as well as how to cope with interviews and apply for jobs. There are some which look at world issues, poverty, war and peace, world hunger and environmental issues. Other materials cover running bank accounts and balancing chequebooks, budgeting, running a household. Others deal with media, assessing the messages of film, television, radio, books, and even evaluating newspaper reports. That would be a good one for IIIA, Ruey” she broke her speech as everyone turned to IIIA’s form mistress with general laughter.
“It might well be. Len, when are we to see these curricula? And will it mean much in the way of extra work?” Ruey asked the questions that were on everyone’s lips.
“Rosalie will leave the documents in here tomorrow. As for work, I think this will be what you make it. The time has to come from somewhere, so once next terms timetables are finished you should find that your contact time has stayed much the same. Your preparation time may need to increase until you are more familiar with the idea, but I would imagine that each of you will choose areas that are already familiar to you, or that you would have to deal with in your form already. Since each form has a new mistress each year this should not cause a problem. In September the first few lessons will give the mistress time to become acquainted with her form, it will also be a time that the form mistress can use to deal with any particular problems.
“It was suggested that we teach the girls about relationships and sex. Hilda, Bill and I have discussed this at length, and for the moment there will be formal teaching on this. The general science classes will of course continue to teach the biological facts. However once we have found or created an appropriate curriculum which addresses some of the concerns raised then this too will be added to the form period.”
Len opened up the meeting for discussion, and was pleased with the positive comments coming from most of the mistresses, including the elder ones who expressed a pleasure at having a timetabled opportunity to do the things that many of them had been trying to fit into the odd minutes with the girls anyway. This was especially true for those who were form mistresses to the fifth and sixth forms.

The meeting was coming to an end when Lucy, rising from her seat to seek her coat and ensure she was ready when Ian came to collect her gave a sudden shout, and clutched at her stomach. She sank back into her chair, biting her lip and gasping in pain. Then as it subsided gave a shamefaced look and said, “Sorry everyone, a bit of a scare there.”
“Are you alright, Lucy?” asked Len, being the only person around with a practical experience of what Lucy was going through, and eyeing her junior teacher with a concerned eye.
“Of course I am,” replied Lucy giving a wan smile and trying to rise again. This time she got no further as another pain shot through her and a wet patch appeared on the chair as it became evident her waters had broken.
“That is less than 5 minutes,” noted Len, “Lucy how long has this been going on?”
“All evening, but I didn’t realise, I thought it was just those practice contractions everyone has told me about.”
“Well, I think the Chalet School is about to have another first. You’ll never get to the San safely now. June, please go and get Matey, and see if nurse is still here will you. Ruey, come round here and kneel behind Lucy, let her lean back on you, give her your hand and be prepared for it to be squeezed very hard indeed. Rosalind, go to the laundry cupboard and find some towels and sheets. Sharlie will you please go to the front door and wait for Ian; he will be here in a few minutes anyway. The rest of you had better clear out and give the poor girl some privacy.
“Arggh,” a cry not from Lucy, but from Ruey as Lucy gripped her hand during another contraction. The majority of the staff moved quickly and soon Len and Ruey were left with Lucy, only Hilda remaining. The two heads conferred quickly and then Len went back to Lucy, and proceeded to give her as much comfort as was possible in the situation. It was not long before Matey and nurse appeared, to be followed a few minutes later by Lucy’s husband, a doctor at the San. Len left Lucy in their capable hands, and followed Hilda and Ruey to the study to await their news.

Ah, but they don't have to teach sex ed yet. It's already covered in science, and they havn't found or written an appropriate curric. for the form periods.

I based the content of these around a lesson we had at school in the 1980's called 'Issues' and was the forerunner of PSHE. All the little things they need to be taught which won't be covered in any particular subject.

We haven't seen all the staff reaction yet. I thougvht about it and decided that the better of the older staff would already have been covering these things with their forms, and that this would just formulise it.

I couldn't resist the idea of a baby in the staff room.!

This story will slowly be drawing to an end, so most of the clues for the tying up of the storylines are there if you look for them. I'm just trying to make sure I don't leave any loose ends.

I'm also trying to decide whether or not there will be another death, I think there may have to be, unfortunatly, I think this story has had enough of those already.

Not another great story coming to an end!

Love the baby being born at the staff meeting - if it's a girl and she becomes a pupil she will be able to say she was born at the school.

Was Kathie at the meeting?  Surely she would disagree with the changes (even if she didn't) because it was Len implementing them.

They settled down for a long wait, Len stoking the fire whilst Ruey brewed the coffee. The three sat quietly around the fire discussing the staff meeting and it’s unusual ending.
“I think it’s a first for this school,” commented Hilda with a smile.
“It was a shock to everyone, that’s for certain. I think some of them thought the baby would come there and then, and I’m sure some of them were shocked at how much pain she was in,” replied Len.
“Don’t forget my dear, that some of our staff are as sheltered in their way as the girls are. It is only recently that we started having married staff, and you and Lucy are our only permanent married staff. Lucy is the first person to work throughout a pregnancy here,” replied Miss Annersley.
“After that scene I think any other staff will probably want to take leave earlier,” added Ruey, “but I’m surprised Ian allowed her to stay that long.”
“The baby wasn’t due until the end of the holidays. I’m slightly concerned that it is so early, I think she was meant to have another five or six weeks and term finishes in two,” said Len.
The three sat sipping their coffee and then fell to discussing the Panto. This was to take place the following week and would be the last major event of the term.

It was only an hour and a half later that Matey entered the room beaming. The three women jumped up, a question in their faces. The sight of her beam immediately put them at ease, but they were eager for her to give them the news they were waiting for.
“It’s been a long time since I delivered a baby,” Matey said as she sank into a chair, her hands outstretched for the coffee that Len was pouring for her.
“I didn’t know you had,” Ruey interjected.
“My dear girl, of course I have. It was all part of my training, and I worked in a hospital before coming here, as a nurse rotating through all wards before becoming house sister in the nurses training school.”
Put in her place in Matey’s indomitable manner Ruey subsided and it was left to Hilda to put the question, “Put us out of our misery Gwyneth. How is Lucy, and what has happened in my staff room?”
There was burst of laughter as Matey replied, “A woman gave birth of course. Even you should have realised that Hilda.”
It looked as if the two women were about to start a sparring match that Len knew from experience could go on all night before any news was imparted. She stood to her feet and drew herself up to her full height before addressing the two most awesome personages in the school in the crisp manner she would have used with erring Juniors, “Will you please both be quiet and act like the sensible adults you are meant to be. What would the middles say if they heard this? Matey will you tell us what happened, or shall I go down to the staff room and find out for myself?”
Matey and Hilda sat back in their chairs and stared open-mouthed at Len.
“I couldn’t resist it,” she grinned at their shock, “The sight of you both squaring up to each other was too much for me.”
Hilda relented and turning to Matey said, “OK, presuming from your smile and comment about delivering babies Lucy has been safely delivered, will you please have pity on us and tell us all about it?”

Matey looked around at the three women and tempting as it was, to tease them further she decided to concede defeat and give them the news.
“Lucy had a relatively easy time of it. She and her daughters are now being made comfortable in our own san.”
“Daughters, in the plural,” gasped Hilda.
“Yes, she has outdone even Joey in that line Len, Lucy has three baby daughters, born right here in the Chalet.”
“Three, well at least it wasn’t those quads mamma was always harping on about. Are they all right, I know they are rather early.”
“That’s because there were three. However small as they are they have pinked up nicely, have good sets of lungs and are maintaining their temperatures. Lucy was beginning to feed them as I left and looked as if she was taking to it, as a duck to water, so there seems to be no worries there. I’ve had the side room in the San made ready for them as she shouldn’t really travel for a few days and Ian will bring some baskets over for the babies to sleep in.”
“Wow,” was all Ruey could say after this.
“I wish I could see the look on Joey’s face when she hears this. But has anyone told the Peter’s, that is more important?” Hilda was concerned for Lucy’s parents, old friends of the school.
“I told Ian to use the phone in the office as soon as he was ready. I presume they will all want to visit, but I won’t allow that until tomorrow.”
“In the meantime, we had better all be getting to bed,” said Hilda, “Gwyneth, do you need any help now?”
“No, nurse and I can do all that is required during the night, and Ian will organise an extra nurse to help us until Lucy can go home. Nurse and I do still have our normal jobs to do.”
“I can see an orgy of baby worship about to happen,” grinned Len.
“Not in my San it won’t. Lucy will need time to recover, and three babies will be hard work for her. Visitors will be strictly limited while I have any say in the matter. I’ll be back with hot milk for you three in 20 minutes, be ready won’t you,” and with this she left having got the last word.

The school as whole rejoiced over the news, and eventually one representative from each form was allowed to go and peek at the babies and congratulate the mother. There was a general excitement over the fact of the babies being born in the school, and a glee that as they were all girls, they could claim to be true chalet girls from the moment of their birth.

It was a few days later that Miss Annersley finally got the interview she had been angling for with Kathie. She had not wanted to formally ask her to the study feeling that this would put the mistress on the defensive, and all her attempts to get alone with the mistress had so far come to naught. She had put in a lot of thought and prayer, and was sure she had an inkling as to the reason for Kathie’s attitude, but felt that to insist on discussing it could exacerbate the problem. On this particular day Kathie’s form, Inter V had been granted permission to spend some time with Frau Meiders in the dommy sci kitchens trying out some new recipes they had been sent for sweets that they hoped to use for the sale the following term. As this was during the day it gave Kathie an unexpected free period. Having glanced at the timetable Hilda realised that Kathie would be alone, and grabbing a folder from the office as an excuse made her way to the staff room.

I'm still not sure about this, although it has the necessary outcome.

Hilda walked into the staff room, and placed the folder down on the table beneath the notice board. Seeing Kathie on her own reading a novel she called across to her, “It’s good to get an unexpected free period occasionally isn’t it? Rosalie is snowed under with correspondence and as I’m not teaching I thought I’d come and refresh the notice board. Some of these posters have been up all term. Could you pass me the stapler, do you think dear?”
Having got the mistress to come and join her, Hilda proceeded to carry on chatting about nothing for a moment or so, just to keep Kathie there and stop her from haring off on an invented errand. Pinning up the last new poster as she spoke, she turned to Kathie and smiled. “Thank you for your help dear. I don’t seem to have seen much of you this term, let’s grab a coffee and you can tell me what you think of the new curricula now you’ve had a chance to look at them.” She quickly poured two cups of coffee as she spoke, and handing one to Kathie, took a seat next to small coffee table by the porcelain stove that kept the room warm. Kathie had no choice but to join her, or to be extremely rude. Kathie could not meet Miss Annersley’s eyes as she took her seat, guessing what would come next.

“So, what do you think?” Hilda repeated her question.
“A lot of fuss about nothing really. Most of the stuff covered we are already talking to the girls about. It will be nice to have time put aside for it, but that will be balanced out by the need to prepare more. It’s the new staff I’m not sure about.”
“Why ever not? Both girls were excellent head girls, and we’ve seen what a help Felicity can be.”
“Yes, I’m sure they will both be good teachers.  However surely if we need extra staff, if we really have a position, we should advertise the job and then pick out the best of the applicants. This smacks of nepotism, creating jobs for relatives and friends.”
This took Hilda aback a little. She sensed bitterness, but something told her that this was not the real root of the problem.
“I trust that the school, and the board will always put the interests of the girls above personal matters. That has always been part of our ethos as staff, and something I hope will continue.”
“So do I.” Kathie fell silent after this, and the pair drank their coffee with an increasing tension.
Hilda broke the silence after a brief prayer, “Kathie, I know I haven’t seen much of you this term, and I’m very sorry about that, but from what I have seen you haven’t been very happy. Do you think that you could tell me why?”
Kathie sipped her coffee slowly and thought. She knew that the Head’s nickname among the girls was ‘the abbess’ and that she had a reputation for being able to help people ‘see straight’ as Joey had once put it. She knew that Hilda was giving her a chance to open herself up, but she had never let anyone into her deeper feelings and found the thought of making herself vulnerable to the Head too difficult. She sat very still, holding her cup tightly in both hands before shaking her head slightly and whispering “No.”
Hilda looked at her with compassion, seeing the struggle that was going on and the tears that were near the surface. Deciding that to push the issue may only serve to harden Kathie’s heart she stood and placing her hand on Kathie’s shoulder said, “I’ll never force you, but if you ever need me, whatever time, come and we’ll talk together. You will be in my prayers for now my dear.” Then she returned to her study with a heavy heart, leaving Kathie alone once more.

I would have thought Hilda would have pushed until Kathie broke down and gave in, but it's nice to see the story going down a path I didn't expect. Now will Kathie climb down enough to go and talk to her?

DANGER, DANGER, PLOT BUNNY ATTACK!!!

I think I've suddenly got a new idea about how this is going to be resolved, and about who, if anyone might die.

HELP!

*Wonders if this is altogether wise?  What if the PB decides to pack his bags and go for good?

Carolyn - I don't mind how you resolve this. as long as you do resolve it.  Soon.  Please?

Very unlikely. They're persistent little blighters and never leave once they realise they've got a willing victim.

Carolyn,

This is excellent - can't wait for when Kathie finally opens up (and agree that she shouldn't until she's ready to!)

Have to say it's difficult reading these Drabbles one after another - I'd just read Lesley's Matey in the strait jacket scene and moved on to this thread with Matey giving a wide beam (as she pronounced the news of Lucy's babies) and was very worried, for a split second I thought she'd escaped and that her smile was sinister!

Worried that you all feel Hilda should have pushed some more. I trust the Abbess, and she definatly felt that unless Kathie would open up of her own accord then it would be impossible to move on. Forcing her may have brought the issue into the open, but could also have hardened her attitude. That's how Hilda explained it to me anyway.

Plot demands that Kathie didn't take the opportunity, the plot bunny hasn't finished with her. Not by a long chalk after what he told me last night.

I totally agree with you, Carolyn,

Hilda gave Kathie the opportunity and only pushed as was appropriate - no point having any deep and meaningful discussion until Kathie is receptive

Sounds as though Kathis may live to regret not opening up to Hilda!

So you want her to live?  Hmm!

Will archive this soon, certainly before I post the next installment, but wanted to see your comments on the latest turn of events before I did so. Will be considering your reactions as I write the next parts, if the characters co-operate of course.

Oh goodness!

Well, if you're going to kill her off, at least let her have some absolution first! Don't let her die without getting everyting off her chest!
I know she's nice really!
