Here is the first of two bits from yesterday, to be followed by today's first installment.

Matey looked around at the three women and tempting as it was, to tease them further she decided to concede defeat and give them the news.
“Lucy had a relatively easy time of it. She and her daughters are now being made comfortable in our own san.”
“Daughters, in the plural,” gasped Hilda.
“Yes, she has outdone even Joey in that line Len, Lucy has three baby daughters, born right here in the Chalet.”
“Three, well at least it wasn’t those quads mamma was always harping on about. Are they all right, I know they are rather early.”
“That’s because there were three. However small as they are they have pinked up nicely, have good sets of lungs and are maintaining their temperatures. Lucy was beginning to feed them as I left and looked as if she was taking to it, as a duck to water, so there seems to be no worries there. I’ve had the side room in the San made ready for them as she shouldn’t really travel for a few days and Ian will bring some baskets over for the babies to sleep in.”
“Wow,” was all Ruey could say after this.
“I wish I could see the look on Joey’s face when she hears this. But has anyone told the Peter’s, that is more important?” Hilda was concerned for Lucy’s parents, old friends of the school.
“I told Ian to use the phone in the office as soon as he was ready. I presume they will all want to visit, but I won’t allow that until tomorrow.”
“In the meantime, we had better all be getting to bed,” said Hilda, “Gwyneth, do you need any help now?”
“No, nurse and I can do all that is required during the night, and Ian will organise an extra nurse to help us until Lucy can go home. Nurse and I do still have our normal jobs to do.”
“I can see an orgy of baby worship about to happen,” grinned Len.
“Not in my San it won’t. Lucy will need time to recover, and three babies will be hard work for her. Visitors will be strictly limited while I have any say in the matter. I’ll be back with hot milk for you three in 20 minutes, be ready won’t you,” and with this she left having got the last word.

The school as whole rejoiced over the news, and eventually one representative from each form was allowed to go and peek at the babies and congratulate the mother. There was a general excitement over the fact of the babies being born in the school, and a glee that as they were all girls, they could claim to be true chalet girls from the moment of their birth.

It was a few days later that Miss Annersley finally got the interview she had been angling for with Kathie. She had not wanted to formally ask her to the study feeling that this would put the mistress on the defensive, and all her attempts to get alone with the mistress had so far come to naught. She had put in a lot of thought and prayer, and was sure she had an inkling as to the reason for Kathie’s attitude, but felt that to insist on discussing it could exacerbate the problem. On this particular day Kathie’s form, Inter V had been granted permission to spend some time with Frau Meiders in the dommy sci kitchens trying out some new recipes they had been sent for sweets that they hoped to use for the sale the following term. As this was during the day it gave Kathie an unexpected free period. Having glanced at the timetable Hilda realised that Kathie would be alone, and grabbing a folder from the office as an excuse made her way to the staff room.

Hilda walked into the staff room, and placed the folder down on the table beneath the notice board. Seeing Kathie on her own reading a novel she called across to her, “It’s good to get an unexpected free period occasionally isn’t it? Rosalie is snowed under with correspondence and as I’m not teaching I thought I’d come and refresh the notice board. Some of these posters have been up all term. Could you pass me the stapler, do you think dear?”
Having got the mistress to come and join her, Hilda proceeded to carry on chatting about nothing for a moment or so, just to keep Kathie there and stop her from haring off on an invented errand. Pinning up the last new poster as she spoke, she turned to Kathie and smiled. “Thank you for your help dear. I don’t seem to have seen much of you this term, let’s grab a coffee and you can tell me what you think of the new curricula now you’ve had a chance to look at them.” She quickly poured two cups of coffee as she spoke, and handing one to Kathie, took a seat next to small coffee table by the porcelain stove that kept the room warm. Kathie had no choice but to join her, or to be extremely rude. Kathie could not meet Miss Annersley’s eyes as she took her seat, guessing what would come next.

“So, what do you think?” Hilda repeated her question.
“A lot of fuss about nothing really. Most of the stuff covered we are already talking to the girls about. It will be nice to have time put aside for it, but that will be balanced out by the need to prepare more. It’s the new staff I’m not sure about.”
“Why ever not? Both girls were excellent head girls, and we’ve seen what a help Felicity can be.”
“Yes, I’m sure they will both be good teachers.  However surely if we need extra staff, if we really have a position, we should advertise the job and then pick out the best of the applicants. This smacks of nepotism, creating jobs for relatives and friends.”
This took Hilda aback a little. She sensed bitterness, but something told her that this was not the real root of the problem.
“I trust that the school, and the board will always put the interests of the girls above personal matters. That has always been part of our ethos as staff, and something I hope will continue.”
“So do I.” Kathie fell silent after this, and the pair drank their coffee with an increasing tension.
Hilda broke the silence after a brief prayer, “Kathie, I know I haven’t seen much of you this term, and I’m very sorry about that, but from what I have seen you haven’t been very happy. Do you think that you could tell me why?”
Kathie sipped her coffee slowly and thought. She knew that the Head’s nickname among the girls was ‘the abbess’ and that she had a reputation for being able to help people ‘see straight’ as Joey had once put it. She knew that Hilda was giving her a chance to open herself up, but she had never let anyone into her deeper feelings and found the thought of making herself vulnerable to the Head too difficult. She sat very still, holding her cup tightly in both hands before shaking her head slightly and whispering “No.”
Hilda looked at her with compassion, seeing the struggle that was going on and the tears that were near the surface. Deciding that to push the issue may only serve to harden Kathie’s heart she stood and placing her hand on Kathie’s shoulder said, “I’ll never force you, but if you ever need me, whatever time, come and we’ll talk together. You will be in my prayers for now my dear.” Then she returned to her study with a heavy heart, leaving Kathie alone once more.

Now for the new bit.

Len listened to her mother with a growing realisation of how lonely Joey had become. She had come for English tea at Joey’s request, as that lady had said that she needed to talk to her eldest daughter. They were sat in the salon, with a plate of Anna’s scones dripping with butter between them.
“You see darling, once you had moved over to the school, and the twins started boarding as well, that left just me and Felicity, and I knew she was never going to be here permanently. I still don’t quite understand why she is leaving the ballet, but it will be nice to see a little more of her.
“I found it really hard at first, I couldn’t settle to anything, and kept some very strange hours for a while. I visited everyone I possibly could, and probably made a nuisance of myself in a few different quarters. I’m more grateful than I can say to the good friends in the school and along the Platz who let me ramble on, and never threw me out. I was feeling very unsure of myself after your Father left. I know that we could never have made things work again, but I kept going over the past in my mind, wondering if I should have done anything different. I think I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown when your Uncle Jem stepped in.”
“Uncle Jem? I knew he was concerned about you, we all have been, but I didn’t know he had done anything.” Said Len as she patted Friedle, her mother’s latest St Bernard on the head, and ruffled his ears absently.
“Oh, Len, your hands,” cried Joey as the dog began to lick the crumbs off Len’s hands. “Friedle do get down boy.”
“It’s Ok mother, I’ve finished anyway. I couldn’t eat another thing. Anna doesn’t loose her touch does she?”
“No, which is just as well considering the news I have for you.”
“Oh, do continue. What did Uncle Jem do?”
“First of all he introduced me to some of the long term patients who don’t get many visitors and suggested I spend some time with them. Jack was always keen to keep me away from the San, saw it as protecting me from the more difficult parts of a doctor’s job. I was surprised how many patients don’t have regular visitors and I began to slowly befriend some of them. This lead to meeting some of the new doctors up there, and even some of the student doctors. I never realise dhow many there were.”
Len butted into her mothers narrative here, “Yes, I met one of them the night Reg died. I’d almost forgotten about it until now. I blundered into Father’s old office and found it transformed into a residential room. She was very kind,” ended Len meditatively.
“I’ve found some of the student doctors to be delightful creatures, and so appreciative of Anna’s baking. I’ve been taking boxes of cakes and scones over there quite often. That is what made Jem approach me I think.”
“Don’t tease me mother. What have you and Uncle Jem been cooking up?”

Joey looked at her eldest daughter and poured another cup of tea before replying. “There is a severe shortage of rooms at the San, especially for student doctors. The increase in female doctors has led to the need for separate accommodation for the male and female students.”
“Yes, and?” queried Len, with a sudden insight as to where this was heading.
“Jem has asked if I would be willing to house the female students. We’ve been round the house and looked at how it could be done. There are twelve bedrooms in the main part of the house, they could house up to two-dozen girls. The Salon is easily large enough for a sitting room for them, and the dining room is big enough too. The flat that you had, together with the other rooms in that wing will be more than enough to give me a private home, although I will keep my bedroom and study in the main part of the house. Jem wants me to act as house mother for the home.”
“It will certainly keep you busy enough,” said Len, slightly breathless at this last bit of news. “Are you sure that it won’t be too much for you. What about your writing?”
“I’ll have plenty of time to write, I don’t actually do as much as I used to. Jem is looking for someone to help Anna in the kitchen and round the house. She will become housekeeper and have a cook and maids working under her. The San will contribute towards her wages as well, so she will get a long overdue pay rise. My responsibility will be the girls welfare, and I do have a little experience there you know.”
The two relaxed into laughter at this last comment, and Len was happy that her mother’s situation was on the way to being resolved.

I thought that was the idea Jem had. I like it, Joey's house was going to waste with just her in it. Does this mean Len will live at the school during the holidays?

Will this mean that Jo will interfere less or more?

After all, giving her up to 24 people to be housemother to will give her a lot more scope to interfere.

Jennie, well-known Jo-phobe.

Expecting a visitor any minute, but hope to post more later. Here are two paragraphs to be getting on with.

It was the following week that the St Mildred’s pantomime was due to take place. They were indeed following the tale of Little Red Riding Hood, although with a few variations. The woodcutter was actually a prince seeking his for his bride someone who would love him for himself and not his title. He fell for Red Riding Hood when he saw her devotion to her grandmother. The Girls father was an evil character who wanted his daughter to marry for wealth and keep him in his old age, and he was aided in this by the wolf, who was a portrayed as a slightly comic figure who thought about nothing but his next meal. Other characters included wood sprites that befriended Red Riding Hood and woodland animals that kept the granny company and warned her of danger. As usual the students at St Mildreds had written the script and score themselves, and only those girls from the chalet who were taking part knew anything about it.

The Pantomime was to be performed on a Saturday, in the early afternoon for the Junior and ambulatory cases from the San along with San staff who would be working later. A later performance was scheduled for the middles, seniors and for visitors and other staff. Miss Annersley had decided to accompany the Juniors with Len attending the second performance. The other mistresses had been able to choose which performance they would attend, the only proviso being that they split themselves equally between the two. Many took this as a chance to attend the performance with their friends; Kathie had signed to attend the early performance without consulting anyone else and in the end found herself isolated once again as the staff attending this were mainly the junior staff and those with no connexions on the Platz who were not hoping to renew acquaintances at the later performance.

*feeling very sorry for Kathie at present* And Carolyn that was a very useful way to sort out Jo's problem. She'll certainly be busy! And will Kathie snap out of things a bit when Jo isn't hanging around as much?

HO, Ho, Ho. *just a Santa impression*

Wait and see what I've got in store for Kathie!

I still haven't quite decided about the death though.

Kathie had returned to the school with the Juniors in time for a late Kaffee Und Kuchen. She ate the small meal in the staff room despondently watching the remaining staff getting ready to leave and responding to the teasing form those who had already been. She only ate a small amount the delicious bread twists turning dry in her mouth, remembering how once she had been part of that merry thong. Those going to the second performance began to leave, amongst them Nancy. Kathie watched with an indescribable longing in her eyes and as if she could feel this Nancy turned and standing close to Kathie said quietly, “I wish you were coming with us Kathie.”

Unable to stand any longer Kathie ran from the staff room and all they way to her own bedroom before collapsing on the bed in a paroxysm of tears. She laid there the sobs coursing through her body as she let out all the passion that had been building up in her over the term. Eventually, as often happens after such a storm she fell asleep where she lay and did not awaken until she felt a hand on her shoulder.

Sorry, I'm not sure if I'll be able to do the next part (s) tonight or not. I'm getting a lump in my throat just thinking about it.

Hilda, Hilda, Hilda, Hilda, Hilda! She'll sort Kathie out. I'm not sure Nancy would know the right things to say. She's too involved, having argued with her already.

She awoke with a jolt. Her hair was disarrayed, and had fallen over her face, sticking there as she half rose. A fresh handkerchief was pressed into her hand and a gentle arm placed around her shoulder. As Kathie began to blow her nose and wipe her eyes, a hand gently lifted the hair from her face and she saw for the first time who it was that had come to her.
“Thank-you Miss Annersley,” she gulped, wringing the now wet handkerchief in her hands.
“It’s my pleasure Kathie. I was concerned when you didn’t show up for Abendessen and no-one wanted to say anything about where you might be.”
Kathie stood and went to her little sink to wash her face. Hilda sat calmly on the bed watching her, hoping that this was a turning point for the mistress. Kathie turned shakily from the sink and stood, uncertain what to do next. Hilda took advantage of this and said, “I haven’t eaten either because I came to find you. Shall we go to my quarters and I’ll have Karren send us a tray up. Something light I think,” she added noting Kathie’s shaking and gulping.” She was relieved when Kathie nodded and escorted her along to her own sitting room quickly. Once there she ensconced her in a small armchair near the fire and picked up the house telephone. Then she went to her room and finding a shawl brought it out and wrapped Kathie in it.
“It’s getting too warm for a fire most of the time, but I think you need something extra at the moment. This will do for now. Now let’s eat our soup and then we can talk.” The trays of crusty buttered rolls, Karren’s special vegetable soup, and fruit compote with yoghurt were nicely presented, with tray clothes and a matching napkin on each tray, and the two women ate quickly, but without hurry in a thoughtful silence.

Once they had finished Hilda rang for the maid who tidied the trays away and then took her seat opposite Kathie and waited. Kathie herself knew that the moment had come when she had to decide which way she was going to go. The memory of Nancy saying goodbye to her that evening returned, and for a moment she thought she would cry again, but taking strength from the kindness shown her by Hilda she took her courage in both hands and started to speak.

Sorry folks. I've started the next bit, but it's just too difficult to finish the way i feel at the moment.
For a preview, there is much more than a confession to come.

“I don’t know where to start. I’ve been so unhappy this term. I even thought about leaving, and started looking through the advertisements.” She stopped and Hilda asked,
“Are you able to tell me what started it? You seemed in good spirits when you stayed with me at Christmas.”
“That’s where it all started though. You talked Nancy out of applying for your job didn’t you?”
“Has she spoken to you about that?” queried Hilda before deciding how to reply.
“No. Not to me or to anyone as far as I can tell. She just announced her decision and said that she would back Len to the hilt.”
“Hmm. I’m afraid that although, as you have rightly guessed, we did discuss the matter, I cannot break Nancy’s confidence by telling you what she has decided not to.”
“But why won’t she talk about it. I thought we were friends, but not anymore.”
Hilda waited a moment, and seeing that Kathie seemed at a loss how to proceed prompted her, “Why should it matter to you whether Nancy became head or not? Surely that is her decision.”
Kathie stopped fiddling with the shawl at this, Hilda was getting close to the truth of the matter and she was not certain if she could humble herself enough to make a full confession. Then Nancy’s face seemed to swim into her vision and she remembered those last words, “I wish you were coming with us Kathie.” She burst out her confession before she lost her nerve again, “I thought that if she became head then I would become senior mistress. It seemed my only chance of promotion and she whipped it away without even explaining why. I thought she was my friend, but I also feel that she betrayed me by not allowing me that chance. Then Len was appointed and I thought I saw why, Nancy had been talked into standing down so that a member of the family could have the position. I hated that idea; it seemed to be against everything we stand for, or rather everything I thought we stood for. Nancy wouldn’t talk about it, and I felt so isolated. It was as if I was the only member of the school who could see what was happening. I called Nancy an automaton at half term and we’ve hardly spoken since. Until tonight.”
“What happened tonight?”
“She stopped on her way out of the staff room and said that she wished I was going with them. I couldn’t take it, that’s what made me break down. I fled to my room and that’s where you found me. I’ve been so lonely.”

Hilda didn’t reply immediately. She stayed in her chair and put her head on one side, regarding Kathie thoughtfully. Kathie saw the steady eyes that seemed to delve into her soul and shuddered slightly. “I suppose you want me to resign now?”
There was a laugh, “My dear girl, of course not. Why should we want to loose you?”
“Well, after hearing all that,” Kathie trailed off, miserable and confused.
“I’ve heard much worse in my time, from staff as well as pupils. No, I am sorry if you mistook my silence for condemnation. I have no right or desire to do that. I was just pondering the best way to help.”
“Oh, sorry. I don’t expect help, it is just a relief to get it off my chest.”
“I think I need to know the worst Kathie. Is there anything else you need to tell me? You still seem to feel guilty about something.”
Kathie gave a rueful grin. “I know why the girls feel they can’t hide from you. Yes, I suppose I had best make a clean breast of things now I’ve started hadn’t I?”
“It’s always best in the long run.”
“I tried to undermine Len. I thought that if she couldn’t hack the job then the board would be forced to rethink their decision. I talked to some of the junior staff about the ‘Maynard mafia’ as I described it. It was helped by the fact that Joey was around rather a lot. I said that Len couldn’t cope without her mother’s advice. Nancy got wind of this and it’s why we rowed. She realised what I was doing and stopped it. I think she was responsible for Sharlie and Rosalind taking that crowd under their wings a little, away from my corrupting influence no doubt,” she ended bitterly.
“That makes me very proud of Nancy, and I intend to tell her so when she returns later. For now however let’s concentrate on you. There seems to be two main problems, your relationship with Nancy, which has been fractured, and the behaviour that has resulted from that.
“You probably feel that as your friend Nancy should have told you her reasons for standing down. You may be right, but knowing those reasons I can understand Nancy keeping them to herself. Those reasons are personal to her and it is her right to keep them private if she so chooses. As her friend you really should respect that. It seems to me that you were under confident in your friendship and took her silence as a lack of trust. You should be able to see now that this was not the case; in fact it is Nancy, who by her gracious act broke through the barriers you have been putting up, that has brought you to this point. Friendship is a precious think Kathie, but to have a true friend you also need to be one. You have shown a lack of trust in Nancy that will take time to rebuild, but it can be done. You need to talk to Nancy, explain things to her as you have to me and I think she will be more than willing to work at that with you. I know she has missed your friendship. No, she hasn’t said anything to me; she didn’t have to after all this time.
“Your resulting behaviour has really been a matter of pride. Thinking that Nancy didn’t trust you, you decided to look for other explanations of her actions in order to salve your pride. You picked on a possible cause of blame that seemed to explain everything in your eyes and reacted accordingly. It was a further blow to your pride to find the position given to someone you had taught as a teenager. I need hardly add that you are wrong in your ideas. Len was chosen as the best person for the position. I will tell you that Joey refused to vote on the issue, saying that it would be too close to nepotism if she did. Your behaviour towards Len has been appalling, but I’m sure that will be at an end now,” she finished by casting a smile at the dejected Kathie.

“So what should I do? I can hardly fall all over Len all of a sudden; she’d hate it anyway.”
“I think a straightforward apology will suffice. Your relationship with Nancy need to be rebuilt, but you will find her more than willing to meet you halfway. Make time to talk with her and you may be surprised. You will find pride a great burden to overcome, but help is available. Never be frightened to ask. Nancy will help you willingly if I know her, but that will require you to let her know you want to fight it. Don’t forget to pray either. You cannot fight the battle against pride without the help of Our Heavenly Father, but He will never deny you that help.
“I’ll leave you here to think about what we have said, and when Nancy returns I’ll send her up to you if you would like?”
“Yes please, and Hilda?”
“Yes,”
“Thank-you for everything. I will try, honest.”
“I know you will dear. There is a lot of good in you if you will let it out.”

Hilda was walking towards the door when the telephone rang. Shooting an apologetic look at Kathie she went to answer it.
“Hilda Annersley…yes…No!” The colour drained from her face and Kathie looking round from her reverie by the fire saw her sway as she grasped the telephone receiver tighter, holding onto the table with her other hand.
“Jem, tell me now… Oh, I’ll come right away… No I have to.”
Kathie watched silently as Hilda, barely aware of her presence put the receiver back on it’s hook and sat down, tears streaming down her face, her hand reaching intuitively into her desk drawer and coming out clutching a small New Testament as if it was a talisman. Kathie felt as if she had been petrified, unable to move as she watched Hilda unconsciously turn the pages, her lips moving, her head bent. She looked at a short passage, although Kathie could have sworn that she did not really read it, and then sat for a moment before taking a deep breath and seeming strengthened stood and looked around her.

A tiny bit more, because I'm putting off writing what has happened. I don't know if I can bring myself to do it.

“Kathie, we need to go to the San.” Hilda was speaking in barely above a whisper and Kathie had to strain to hear her.
“What has happened?”
“There’s been an accident, a dreadful one. I need to go now,” she finished moving towards the door.
“But I heard the girls return. Who is at the San?” There was no reply and Kathie followed the head who was moving at a quick pace down the corridor towards the staff cloakroom. Kathie entered to find her struggling to pull on her gloves and helped the head fasten her gloves and coat before shrugging her own coat on, unable to face leaving Hilda to cope by herself. She repeated the question, and it was answered not by Hilda but by Len who came bursting in through the door.
“It’s not a girl, it’s staff,” she replied shortly before turning to Hilda.
“Auntie Hilda, I knew you would want to go and drove here as quickly as I could when Uncle Jem said he was going to ring you. I’ve got the car waiting outside.” She put her arm around the old lady and guided her towards the door. “Thanks Kathie,” she called over her shoulder, but Hilda stopped and turned to Len saying, “Kathie should come too.”
Len nodded her acceptance of this and Kathie followed the couple out to the car a cold dread beginning to form in the pit of her stomach.

They drove over the Platz to the San without speaking. Len had ensured that Hilda had a blanket around her before setting off. Once there Len pulled up near the door and helped her brevet aunt out of the car. They walked in through the he front door and Len made to guide them down one of the long corridors, stretching off in all directions from the main concourse. Hilda stopped and turned to Kathie, “We didn’t tell you did we?”
Kathie looked at Hilda, the cold dread in her stomach turning into a knot that tightened as the head gently guided her to a seat in a quiet corner.
“I don’t know exactly what has happened yet, but there was an accident as some of the staff were clearing up in St Luke’s Hall after the Pantomime. Both Nancy, and Bill were seriously injured. Jem didn’t say much on the telephone, but it’s bad, very bad. We need to be prepared.”
Kathie sat stunned, this was worse than she had dreamed of. She looked numbly at Hilda and Len.
“There was a large piece of scenery, hanging above the stage. The ropes must have frayed or something because it came crashing down as we were clearing the stage. It hit Nancy directly. She has a massive head wound and has been unconscious ever since. Bill was also in its path and although it didn’t hit her head it landed on her trunk and the doctors fear some internal injuries. I came over with them and then left to fetch Hilda, and you,” she added, suddenly realising why Hilda had insisted in bringing Kathie.

She led the two other mistresses along to the small two-bedded ward where both Nancy and Bill were being cared for. They entered quietly, dread welling up as they looked at the two still figures on the white beds. Jem came over to them and quickly began to explain the situation in a measured tone.
“They are both in a very serious situation, and are both being prepared for surgery at the moment. Hilda, come and sit down please, there is a chair ready for you.” He moved slightly, and Hilda saw a comfortable chair that had been placed between the two beds so that she could watch and wait with both. She moved over to take her seat as the nurses began to wheel one of the beds out of the room, followed almost at once by the other.
“They are being taken down to the theatre ante-room now. Bill has sustained some internal injuries. We cannot be sure until we operate, but we need to stop the bleeding as soon as we can. Then we will have to see what other damage has been sustained. Nancy needs immediate treatment to relieve a swelling on her brain. This again is the immediate need. We will need to do a further assessment once we have them stabilised. Hilda, I’m sorry to leave you like this but I must go and prepare for theatre myself, all of our surgeons will be needed for two major operations and I cannot leave Gottfried to bear the brunt. I’ll send Matron Greaves along as I go.” He turned to Len as he rose from the chair he had placed next to Hilda’s whilst he spoke, “Will you be Ok Len. I can send for Joey, or for Matey if you would prefer?”
“No, Auntie Helen will be fine. Please go quickly and get it over with.”
Jem nodded and left. Hilda reached out her hands to Len and Kathie and they took seats either side of her, all three lost in their thoughts.

The three sat waiting for what seemed like an age. There was no conversation, no possible words to explain their feelings. They sat holding hands, each drawing some strength from the presence of the others. An hour passed, and then another. The room began to grow dim as the night sky darkened, but none of the women moved to switch on the light. The only light was from the bedside lights that cast long shadows along the floor where the beds had stood. Background noises from outside began to change and then fade and the three women remained still. Footsteps approached from along the corridor, growing louder as they approached the room. The door opened and the three women came slowly back to life, turning as one to watch Jem as he entered the room.

Rachel - PM me your guess, I'd like to know if it really is as obvious as I thought.

This is the last installment for tonight. I've done 3419 words today and that is ENOUGH.

He walked over to the group and took a spare chair before speaking. His face was expressionless and none of the women could work if he brought good news or bad.
“The operations are both over,” he began slowly, “and both Nancy and Bill are in recovery and will be brought up here shortly.” He heaved a sigh and ran his fingers through the remnants of his silver hair before continuing.
“They have both survived the operations, but that is all that can be said at the moment. Bill has lost a lot of blood and has had to have transfusions. She will still be hooked to a drip when she is brought up. We managed to stop the bleeding but have had to remove part of her spleen. It was too badly damaged to repair. Now it is just a case of waiting and watching how she does, hoping that the bleeding does not start again. Nancy’s operation was more serious. She too has lost a lot of blood, but with the blow being to her head and causing her brain to swell, we have had to relieve the inter-cranial pressure, but cannot know what damage has been caused until she recovers consciousness, God willing that she does.”

The news came as a blow to the three women who had been hoping for better news of their much-respected colleagues and friends. It was with heavy hearts that they watched the beds containing the two unconscious patients being wheeled back into the little ward, and all was bustle for a few moments as the nurses and doctors got their respective patients settled and took the first of many observations they would take that long night.

It settled down after about 15 minutes and a nurse remained to watch over Nancy and Bill. She took a seat and placed it unobtrusively at the foot of the room where she could observe both beds. Jem looked at the three watchers and wondered how he should deal with them. Hilda noticed his face and settling herself down in her seat remarked, “Jem, don’t even think about it. Nell is my closest friend, and Nancy a respected member of my staff as well as a friend. I will not be leaving here tonight. Bring me a blanket, although I doubt I will sleep, but I will watch and be here for them, as I know either of them would for me.”
Jem nodded resignedly, “If you insist, but I will be here too, and if I think at any time you have had enough then I will find you a bed and make you stay there under doctors orders until I say you are fit again.”
Hilda accepted this and turned to Len and Kathie but Len spoke first, “I must go back to the school Auntie Hilda, they will be waiting for news. Matey was going to inform the staff tonight. We thought it best to wait until tomorrow before telling the girls. I must go back and tell the staff what is happening and be there for the girls tomorrow.”
“I know. It makes me proud that I did not have to tell you. I’m afraid you have the harder job; to walk away and do your duty when you want with all your being to remain is difficult.”
“Watch Auntie Nell, and take care of her won’t you,” replied Len, her voice beginning to break.
“Of course. Maybe the morning will bring good news.”
Kathie looked stubborn, “I see why Len has to go, but I want to stay with Nancy.”
Hilda stared into her eyes for a moment and seeing the pain there almost relented, but knew that it would not be a good idea, “Kathie, Nancy may need you more tomorrow than she does tonight. You are one of our longstanding members of staff, and if you choose you could be a greater support to Len than Nancy at the present. I won’t insist, but I would ask that you go with Len. Come back tomorrow after a sleep.”
She rose and gave both of them a hug, whispering something in Len’s ear as she did so. Len gave a barely imperceptible nod and opened the door for Kathie.

The two travelled back to school quickly, the Platz being empty of traffic by this time. It was almost midnight as they garaged the car, and they ran through the cold spring night towards the house. Len was about to open the door when Kathie put out a hand and stopped her.
“I know this isn’t the best time, but I have to say it. I’m sorry for my behaviour this term. I’ve been a dreadful beast I know. I’ll back you to the hilt now, and I fully intend to make it up with Nancy, if I get the chance,” she ended, a sob catching in her throat. Len’s arms came round her and she heard words of forgiveness whispered as Len drew her into the house where Matey having heard the car on the gravel was waiting for them. Matey hustled them to the office and then having heard Len’s news sent Kathie to her bed whilst Len went to the staff room where all the staff, including many from St Mildreds were awaiting her. Before Len left the office she told Matey what Hilda had whispered in her ear and Matey ensued that Kathie had a dose slipped into her milk to ensure some sleep that night.

The morning dawned over the Platz bringing only a shadow of relief. The two teachers had survived the night and the doctors felt they were slightly stronger, but were hesitant to say any more. Nancy was still unconscious and while Bill had roused during the night she was in such pain that the doctors had given her strong pain relief, which also had the effect of sedating her. Hilda had spent most of the night sitting by them, but at about 4:00am after Bill had roused Jem had insisted she took a few hours sleep, finding a bed for her with the Matron.

Len had broken the news to the girls when they assembled for prayers, and a stunned school united in prayer for their teachers. Len had rung the San early on and obtained the latest news, and after dismissing the school went up to Kathie’s room to see if she had awakened. She found Kathie sat up in bed with a tray that Matey had brought to her moments before.
“I hope you slept well last night,” began Len pleasantly.
“I suspect I didn’t have much say in that,” replied Kathie with a grimace.
“No, but you needed the rest. Miss Annersley said you had been upset even before the news came, and today is going to be hard for us all.”
“Have you heard from the San yet?” asked Kathie, sipping her milky coffee carefully; mindful of what Matey would say if she spilt any of it.
Len took a basket chair and pulled it up next to the bed before replying.
“They are both a shade stronger this morning, but neither is conscious yet. Nancy has remained like that since the operation. Bill roused, but has been given strong painkillers.” Kathie received this news in silence, pushing her tray away unable to eat. Len handed her the tray back, “Matey will keep you here if you don’t eat, and you know what she is like. Leave the toast if you must, but the eat the egg at least.” As Kathie began to obey Len continued, “Look Kathie I know that you want to be with Nancy and we will excuse you as much as possible, especially as we are in the last week of term. However I need your help here as well. If we cover your classes and release you to be with Nancy during the day, will you come home in time for prayers and keep the girls and staff updated. It will help them to have that link with what is happening. Of course if there is an urgent need for you to be there at another time we will understand. If you spend an hour or so now setting work for your forms, I’ll run you over to the San after morning break.”
“That’s very generous of you Len. I do appreciate this, thank you.”
“I’ll leave you to get dressed. Come up to the study once you have sorted the work out. By the way I told your sixth form class to work by themselves, carrying on from the work you did with them last lesson. Mary told me you had set them an essay so I think most of them are in the library reading around that. Don’t worry about them now.”

The next two days passed in a blur for all concerned. Kathie and Hilda spent the majority of their time at the San. Hilda indeed only left when Jem insisted on it. Kathie came back to the school each night, but could report little except that the patients were holding their own. Neither was young, but both were putting up a good fight. Bill was sedated with painkillers, but her heart was standing the strain and the doctors were becoming more hopeful. Nancy was causing concern as she still had not roused, but again all her vital signs were good, and she was showing response to stimuli. All they could do was wait and pray, and all the staff were doing a good deal of both.

On that particular afternoon Kathie was sat next to Nancy’s bed. She was on her own as the doctors had taken Bill down to the x-ray department where they wanted to do some scans of her heart and stomach to ensure that there was no other cause for the pain other than the injuries they had already dealt with. Hilda was taking the opportunity to have a bite to eat and a nap, leaving Kathie with Nancy. Kathie had her chair turned facing the bed, and she held Nancy’s hand as she watched and wished with all her heart that her friend would rouse. These were bitter moments for Kathie as she realised that it was possible Nancy would never know of her repentance, or of her part in it. Kathie regretted her behaviour towards Nancy, appreciating, as she had not done before that Nancy had always show herself to be a friend and recognising that the fault lay with her in refusing to trust her friend and being too proud accept the overtures made towards her. A sob caught in her throat and tears coursed down her cheeks as she slid off her chair to kneel at the side of the bed. “Nancy, if only you knew,” she whispered through the tears, “I’m so sorry. I know I’ve behaved terribly this term, but I wish you could know now how much I want to change. I’m sorry, so sorry.” She continued to whisper her apologies through her sobs, impervious to the hard cold floor as she knelt there.

Hilda found her still kneeling next to the bed when she returned a little while later, a for a moment hesitated to disturb her, feeling that the release may help, then realising that she would hate to be found like this when the medical staff returned with Nell entered the room and bending over the girl, helped her to her feet. “Kathie dear,” she said softly, “Kathie, she knows, she will know.” The two stood for a moment then through her tears Kathie thought she saw something.
“Hilda look,” she exclaimed, pulling herself away and turning the older woman towards the bed. They watched, and saw a definite fluttering of Nancy’s eyelids, and opening briefly before shutting again. Kathie jumped forwards as Hilda grabbed the bell and rang for the nurse.

This was the break through they had been waiting for. Nancy was suddenly surrounded by nurses and doctors taking observations, and by the time Bill returned they had finished their work for a short time. As the doctors stood back from the bedside Jem took Hilda’s arm and reached out for Kathie, guiding them both to a small empty room down the corridor where they could talk.
“This is a positive step. We have been hoping she would regain consciousness soon, and she is beginning to come round now. There is still a long ay to go, and we still do not know what effect the injuries may have had on her memory or brain function, but she seems to be responding in all the ways we would want.”
“How soon will you know any more?” asked Kathie softly.
“Not till tomorrow I wouldn’t have thought, and not for certain until a while after that. She is sleeping naturally now, and will be best left quietly for the night.”
“And Nell,” asked Hilda anxiously.
“Her injuries appear to be healing, but we are worried about the excessive pain she is suffering. The scans we did today did not reveal anything and we may have to do an exploratory operation to get to the root of it and I was hoping to avoid that. However, she is still strong, and still fighting and with care and prayer will come through, if we can find the cause.”
The trio sighed, and Kathie rubbed her eyes, leaning back against the straight chair she had sat on.
Hilda slowly began to rise from her seat, “I must get back, I want to be there when Nell returns” Kathie and Jem followed, a frown appearing on Jem’s face as he noticed the steely determination on Hilda’s face. He left the two women alone, but once Bill had been brought back to the room he insisted that they both left and both return to the Chalet for the night. It looked as if he was about to have a battle royal with Hilda on the issue, but Kathie solved the matter by slowly sinking to the ground in a faint as she bent over to change her shoes. Hilda uttered a brief exclamation. But, by the time Jem had crossed the room, Kathie was already recovering.
“That does it. You must both go back to the school and to bed. This strain has been incredible and I do not need two more patients. I will ring for Len to come and collect you both, and neither of you is to leave your bed tomorrow until Gwyneth has said you may.”
Hilda was too shocked by the grey pallor on Kathie’s face and agreed without further argument, much to Jem’s relief.

Where did I say they would both be OK?

They took the news to school, and it was a much-relieved group of girls who congregated in the various common rooms that evening. The last few days they had tried very hard to co-operate with the staff and were affected by the seriousness of the situation. Len had worried about telling them too much, so soon after the events of the previous term, but Matey had advised it.
“They will never trust us again if the worst happens and we have kept them from knowledge of the situation. They need to learn one of life’s hardest lessons, that sometimes bad things happen together and we don’t know why. They don’t need the details, but they need to know the gravity of the situation we are facing, they are part of our community as well.”
Len smiled gravely as Matey proffered this advice. They were sat in matey’s office where Len had gone to seek painkillers for a headache, and she had ended up pouring out her worries into that lady’s confidential ear.
“Mother always told us how you spoke about being strong women and not spineless jellyfish, wasn’t that in a similar situation.”
Matey grinned, “Trust Jo to remember that one. It was when Mademoiselle La Pattre, Madame’s partner in the school and the headmistress at the time was first taken ill. I think it was Hilda and Nell I was speaking to that time, but it has always been a policy of the school, we practised it throughout the war years in spite of some initial reservations from certain parents. Girls are not the weak creatures we sometimes see them as being, and they become stronger if we give them information. Ignorance can breed worry and then ill health may result. We should be training our girls to face up to the world and its problems, not fleeing in fear.”
“Thank-you. That is quite some philosophy. It is what I felt, but I couldn’t put it into words, not having had the experience in the same way you have. I needed to be sure that we are doing the right thing and that I wasn’t just following a nebulous feeling.”
Len had followed this advice and kept the school informed about what was happening at the San. When Hilda and Kathie returned she had them bring their news to the school at Abendessen, before Matey packed the pair off to bed. The following night was the last night of term and all hoped that there would be more good news to bring to the spot supper.

I will post tomorrow, but reading Real CS has left me too shocked to write serious stuff tonight. I need a nice fun drabble to play with.

I don't know how Lesley managed to cope with the emotion that writing that will have caused her, nor with our reactions.

Hmm, how brave am I? :P

If my grammar and spelling are that bad, please feel free to correct them. That's the only way I'll learn after all and I know that spelling especialy isn't exactly a strong point. I do use word and spell/grammar check everything but I know I miss some things. It's far worse when I type directly here.

If I know about that, I can cope with Nancy's injuries.

Will this put you out of your misery?

The girls spent the last day of term in packing under Matey’s eagle eyed supervision. Holly was excited about going to Freudesheim for the holidays and looking forward to spending some time with both her and both Polly and Mary-Jo were full of the places she should get Mike to take her.
“If we visit the Auberge I can try out the yodel that Octavia taught me. None of you would let me try last time we went that way.”
“I’m not surprised. Octavia can’t yodel, so how she could teach you is anybody’s guess. I wouldn’t want to hear the results echoed back thank you very much,” replied Polly with some force.
The staff were also engaged in sundry tidying jobs. Those on escort duty would be leaving the following morning with the girls and for the most part going straight on to visit various relatives. One or two would be returning to the school for the weekend before leaving on the Monday after spending sometime catching up with paperwork. There were a few staff who would remain at the school throughout the holidays and they found themselves inundated with requests to keep in contact with their colleagues to inform them about Nancy and Bills progress. This was promised without hesitation, although all were expecting good news that day or in the morning before they left.

Kathie and Hilda returned to the San together the following afternoon, Kathie with a nervous anxiety wondering what condition Nancy would be in, and how she could begin to rebuild the fractured relationship. They entered the main concourse of the San to be greeted by a nurse.
“Dr Russell would like to see you before you go down to the wards. Please can you come with me?”
Greatly wondering they followed the brisk nurse up the stairs to Jem’s office. The nurse knocked on the door and ushered them inside before leaving. Jem looked up and waved them towards two chairs set alongside his desk.
“Sorry about that. I wasn’t sure when you would come so I asked our clinic nurse to watch out for you. The reason I wanted you to come up here is so that you won’t be shocked when you go down to the ward.”
Hilda looked at him levelly. “Jem,” she said, her voice calm and measured, “What would shock us? Please do not try and hide things from us, especially at this late stage.”
“Nancy has been sleeping naturally and has recovered consciousness well. We are sure now about her physical recovery, and she appears to be orientated when she is awake which is good. She is still very weak and needs a good deal of rest, this means we have moved her to a room by herself.”
Kathie nodded her head at this, accepting his statement at face value, but Hilda had known the doctor for a good many years and realised instantly that he still had not told them the full story.
“Jem,” she said, her voice full of gravel, “Do continue, we need to know everything.”
Jem lowered his head and sighed. Then he lifted it again and looked Hilda full in the eyes.
“We had to move her away because she was being disturbed by Nell. Nell is still suffering a great deal of pain, far more than she should be, and now her temperature had begun to rise. She was muttering and groaning and this in turn was upsetting Nancy.”
“What does this mean for Nell? Will you have to operate again?”
“I hope not, but it is looking increasingly probable. She is receiving strong painkillers, and we have now started a powerful anti-biotic as well. I am about to go down and assess her again. If we do operate it will be tonight or tomorrow in all likelihood. That is all I can say at the moment. We will know more when we see how she responds to the treatment.”
Jem rang for a nurse to come and escort Kathie to Nancy’s new room and took Hilda down with him to see Nell, the three of them much more sombre than they had been the previous night.

This is all I have written, so I'm afraid no more until tomorrow night. (Real life in the intervening period.) (sorry)

Kathie entered Nancy’s room and sat down next to the bed. She looked at the still figure laid there and whispered quietly, “Nancy.”
The prone figure turned her head slightly and opened her eyes, “Kathie,” she murmured.
They watched each other for what seemed like an eternity to Kathie, then she broke the silence by slipping of her chair and perching on the side of the bed, clutching Nancy’s hand, “I’m so sorry about this term. I’ve been a rotten friend and don’t deserve you. Thank-you for not letting up on me, and for the simple wishes that night. That’s what got through to me in the end. I spent all evening with Hilda, until we heard,” and she trailed off, the recollections of that phone call being too traumatic to discuss at the present time.
Nancy squeezed her hand gently, “That’s all right,” she said softly, “I knew you would come through it in the end.”
They fell silent, neither feeling up to talking but both secure once again in their friendship.

Hilda was having a very different experience. She and Jem had entered the room to see Nell thrashing about on the bed and the senior nurse at the door about to leave.
“Dr Russell, I was just about to call you. Her temperature has shot through the roof, and the pain seems worse than ever.”
Jem stepped over to the bed and gave Nell a brief examination, he caught the nurse’s eye and nodded, she stepped out of the room and returned moments later with a tray, murmuring to Jem, “I’ve notified theatre and Drs Mensch and Hamilton are on their way there now. The anaesthesiologist and his team will be here momentarily.” Jem left Nell in the nurse’s care and guided Hilda out of the room and down to Matron Greaves’ room.
“I’m afraid we will have to operate immediately in order to find out what is going on,” he explained briefly, “Matron, please may Hilda stay here for the duration.”
The kindly Matron Greaves gave the shocked Hilda a tender smile, and said simply, “Of course she may doctor. I’ll see that she has some tea and a good rest while she waits.”
Jem rushed off to join his colleagues in preparing for the operation, leaving Hilda to wait with matron as best she could.

I'm not 100% convinced that Hilda will be receiving any more letters anyway.

But KB is right, it would be totally wrong to include them at the moment, I don't think she would do more than read with a passing glance, and since you all know she has been receiving them it would be pointless to dwell on that.

Hilda is far more worried about Nell's operation at the moment.

Kathie sat by Nancy for another hour, until Nancy fell asleep again, both occasionally speaking but for the main part happy enough to just sit together. When Nancy dozed off Kathie stood intending to seek out Hilda and get drinks for them both. She left the room and walked down the corridor only to be intercepted by the Matron.
“Miss Ferrars, I’m glad to find you, I was just coming to look for you.”
“Oh. Is something wrong?”
Matron Greaves took Kathie aside and as gently as she could, told the mistress how things stood with Miss Wilson. Kathie sagged at the knees, aghast at the dismal news. Then straightening herself, demanded to be told how Miss Annersley was coping.
“She is greatly troubled, but stronger than I would dare imagine in this situation. She is in my room and has had a drink, but wishes to be left alone until after the operation. Kathie, could you, do you think return to the school and let them know what is happening here. The staff there should be kept informed and we cannot spare anyone at the moment.”
Kathie nodded absently. “Has anyone told Nancy?”
“Not yet. The doctors have advised waiting until there is some definite news. It would not do to worry her unnecessarily.”
Kathie nodded once again and then, “I’ll go the school and talk to Len. I’ll return as soon as I can, if I can still be spared. Look, if anything, well, if you need me to tell Nancy anything I will.”
Matron understood what Kathie meant and gently put her arm on Kathie’s shoulder. “Let’s pray it doesn’t come to that.”

Kathie returned to the School, and Len, having heard the news called for a meeting of senior staff. She broke the news as calmly as possible and then added, “What we have to decide now if what and when to tell the girls. I know that we cannot leave them in ignorance, but I don’t want to spoil their spot supper, nor do I want to send them home in too much uncertainty.”
Matey spoke up at this point, “When did they expect the operation to be over Kathie?”
“I don’t know,” replied Kathie, “I think it depends on what they find.”
The discussion was a quite and strained one. All the staff present had worked with Bill for many years, and she had taught several of them in their girlhood. Eventually Len summed up, “So, St Mildreds are to be informed immediately, as are the prefects. Otherwise we will wait until we have some concrete news to deliver, hopefully by prayers, which will be the final event of the evening all pupils staying up till the end of supper and singing which will follow. Kathie, are you returning to the San now?”
“I will stay here if you want me to, or go there, wherever you feel I can be of most use.”
“In that case, please return to the San and let us know the instant there is any more news. I would appreciate it if you could return before the end of the evening, but that will depend on the circumstances.”
The staff dismissed and Kathie made the by now familiar trek back to the San to await further news. This time Len, who would have to return to preside over the supper if the girls were not to be alerted, accompanied her.

Len and Kathie arrived at the San at the same time as Matron Greaves and Jem were going to see Hilda with news of the operation. The look on their faces was grim and Kathie and Len fell in behind them as they entered Matron’s room. Hilda looked up expectantly as they came in, but her face fell as she saw the look on the group’s faces.
“Sit down everybody,” began Jem. “I’m afraid we have found the cause of Nell’s pain. It appears that the accident caused a small perforation in her bowel. This was visible when we first operated, however it has grown and the contents of her bowel have seeped out into her abdomen. This in turn has caused peritonitis, and she is now in a very weak state. We have repaired her bowel, but, well we will have to wait and see if the antibiotics can help her to fight the infection.”
The room was quiet for a moment and then Len asked, “How serious is it Uncle Jem?”
“I am very worried about her,” replied Jem slowly, “It will be touch and go. All we can do now is keep up the antibiotics and wait.”
“There is one more thing we can do Jem,” said Hilda softly, her first response since hearing the news. There was a hush as they all realised what she meant, then Kathie asked, “Would you like me to return to the school Len and inform them?”
“Yes please Kathie. I will come back for supper if I can. Don’t say anything more to the girls until I return.” Kathie left, feeling that she owed it to the school to do her best for them now.

Jem led Hilda and Len down to the room where Nell was recovering from the operation and prepared once again for a long vigil. Nell lay in the bed, white and pale, with flushed cheeks making a startling contrast to her pallor. Her eyes were closed and sunken, her skin clammy. There was a drip attached to her left arm, feeding in the antibiotics, her last hope. As Hilda and Len watched they noticed how she occasionally shook and trembled in reaction to the high temperature and infection. Len stood by the window, leaving the bedside seat to Hilda who had most right to it, being the closest thing to family that Nell had. Len stared at the figure on the bed, hardly daring to hope that life might continue, and struggling with the recent memories standing there brought back. Hilda sat on the straight chair at the side of the bed, holding her friends hand, willing her to fight the infection. They remained like that for longer than either of them would have thought possible. There was no change in Nell’s condition, and yet no relief was felt by the watchers, as it was evident that Nell was barely continuing the fight.

I think I will post and run.

It was late evening when Jem, having returned to the room a little earlier with Gottfried and Eugen stepped towards the bed to make a further examination. Nell’s breathing had become shallower over the last quarter of an hour, and now a rasp could be heard. He listened carefully to her chest and felt her pulse before signalling to the other doctors to do the same. The three muttered quietly, before Gottfried spoke to the nurse, a command that sent her scuttling from the room.
“Hilda, Len,” Jem steeled himself, she is going downhill fast now. We have sent for the priest to come. I fear that she will not be able to last much longer.”
Len began to weep softly and Eugen went to the girl he had known since she was a teenager and placing his arms around her, offered her his handkerchief. Hilda stood and for a shocked second Jem thought she was about to leave the room, but instead she walked around the bed to the drawers holding a few of Nell’s personal items and removing Nell’s rosary returned to the bedside, locking her friends hands around the beads and intertwining them with her own.

It was early the following morning that Kathie crept into Nancy’s room and found that lady awake and sipping from cup held by a nurse. The nurse knowing why Kathie had come left quickly and Kathie sat down next to Nancy wondering how to begin.
“You look as if you haven’t slept a wink,” Nancy said, “I hope you are not still worrying about this term.”
Kathie shook her head, “That’s not it. Nancy, I hate to break this to you, but couldn’t be coward enough to leave it to the doctors. I’m afraid that Bill died late yesterday. She had another operation and they discovered that her bowel was perforated. It was peritonitis that was causing her pain. She fought it as well as she could, but was too weak and she lost the fight last night.”
Kathie watched helplessly as Nancy began to weep. Still weak and unable to move much she lay still and let the tears course down her cheeks unchecked. Kathie stooped over her and taking her awkwardly in her arms cried along with her, their tears mingling together. This state of affairs lasted about fifteen minutes, until Kathie realising that this was not good for Nancy stood up and smoothed the sheets over her friend. Then she went and rung the bell as she had been instructed. It was not long until the nurse re-appeared and gave Nancy a small dose of medicine and some more of the drink. Kathie remained at her friend’ side until she slept again and then returned to the school.

After a little discussion Len had insisted that the girls were told the news before they left. “We cannot lie to them and they will be bound to ask if we tell them nothing, we must tell them the truth.” It was Hilda herself who called the school together on that final morning, and addressed them in sombre tones, wearing her MA gown as a tribute to her friend.
“Girls, as you know Miss Wilson has been seriously ill since the accident following the pantomime. Yesterday she had a second operation, but was unable to overcome her injuries and the infection that had set in. I deeply regret to inform you that she died last night. Miss Wilson has served this school faithfully since the very earliest days in Tyrol. She is, was my closest friend, and we will all be poorer for her loss. A letter will be sent to all your parents and a memorial service will be held in Our Lady of the Snows at the beginning of next term. In the meantime, will you please all bow your heads in a moment of silence whilst Mrs Entwistle leads the catholic girls in the prayer for the departed. Len walked up to stand side by side with Miss Annersley at the dais, and spoke the prayer, but no voice spoke with more feeling than that of Miss Annersley joining with her.

Carolyn - I have tears running down my cheeks, I really wish you hadn't had to do that, but understand, (how could I not!) the needs of the story. Somehow, knowing that they are that much older (Hilda's 71 isn't she?) makes it just a little easier to accept.

*sniffing* I don't care how old they are! It's not nice. Cue another aside, Lesley? How are you going to get around Hilda's reactions this time round, Carolyn?

I suppose we must be grateful that you didn't post this the other night, otherwise we'd have all had a major mourning session and the board would have crashed from the weight of everyone's combined grief!

*More please, Carolyn!*

Lisa - in answer to your question - no I don't think on this occasion that Hilda would react like that - after all she has had the chance to say goodbye and was there at the end. When it happened in Tensions the feeling was immediate and aside had to be written. Not this time though.

There are more scenes to come with Hilda, don't worry. I just need to work them out and decide on the order of the events. There may be one last fight to include as well.

Carolyn, I can't believe you did it!  :'(

It's strange though - although Bill is pretty much my favourite character, I feel more at peace with this death than others. I would have been very unhappy had it been Nancy as she and Kathie have so much to resolve. At least Bill has had a decent life without any unresolved issues and you've written it beautifully - I was particularly touched by Hilda getting out Nell's rosary for her and intertwining the beads round both their hands .......

Maybe because we knew she was in pain and suffering. That ended, so we could deal with it a little better.

Quick.
I'm in the middle of the next bit and don't want to stop to trawl through the books, what was the name of the trips dolls house that was in French? Need it to include in the next scene.

Thanks.

Thank-you Lisa and Chelsea.
This is the first of about 8 scenes left for this story. Should finish in the next few days. *Fair Warning*

Once all the girls had left, including Holly who accompanied Isobel and Wendy across the Freudesheim, the staff slowly began to sort themselves out. After the events of the previous evening many of them had hurriedly changed their holiday plans, wishing to stay for Nell’s funeral. Those who were escorting the girls set off in a sombre mood, expecting no trouble from their charges, many of who were in shock themselves at the news. Len sought out Ruey after Lunch and said, “Let’s take our cases home and get out of here for a while. I want to check on mother and see how she is taking the news.”
“I’m ready when you are. I just need to get my outdoor things from the cloakroom. Len, How is Auntie Hilda? She was superb this morning, but I haven’t seen her since.”
“I have. I will come back to her later, but she wants some time alone now the girls have left. She has always put them first, even in this, but needs to take care of herself now.”
The two sisters left the school building about an hour later and carrying their overnight cases made their way to their other home. They found the hall empty on arrival and took their cases upstairs with a little puzzlement. They eventually found the twins and Holly in the old nursery playing with La Maison des Poupees. Len took Holly aside, “Do you know where your grandmother is?” Holly stared in surprise, “Anna said she was working and we mustn’t disturb her. I haven’t seen her at all since we arrived.” Ruey and Len left the girls who were playing happily, rearranging the furniture and dolls, and jabbering away to the dolls in the French that was all the dolls understood. Len grinned to see that Holly was able to keep her end up with the Wendy and Isobel, who although younger had been trilingual since birth.

Given Holly’s hint Len and Ruey finally ran Joey to ground in her den where she was typing away madly.
“Mamma, here you are. We shouted but you don’t seem to have heard. How are you?”
Joey didn’t stop typing, didn’t even turn her head, just carried on typing making a brief reply to Len. The two withdrew, and conferred briefly, then Len went back to her mother on her own.

Len didn’t speak at first; she walked over to her mother and placed her arms around her. Joey fought to keep typing, but was unable to overcome her tall, eldest daughter. She gave in and turned her swivel chair around to embrace Len properly. “Mamma,” whispered Len.
“I know my darling, I know,” Joey shook in her daughter’s arms and the pair, mother and daughter made their way to the salon where Ruey had arranged afternoon tea. Len settled her mother on the large family couch and sat down next to her whilst Ruey poured.
“Why were you typing so furiously? Your deadline isn’t approaching is it?”
Joey paused before replying, collecting her thoughts, “I couldn’t do anything else,” she said finally. “I had to do it. I couldn’t just sit around here and think, not today.” Len understood. Joey had always used her writing to hide from the world and from her difficult situations, and this was just the same. Gradually Len and Ruey began to talk about Nell, and Joey slowly joined in. The tears flowed freely as they recalled various events, but so did the laughter as Joey recalled events from her own schooldays, calling Nell a ‘blithering idiot’ at guide camp and falling on her whilst preparing for the sale being two that had gone into the school legends.
“Thank-you girls,” was all Joey needed to say when Len finally rose saying that she must return to school for a while and would probably not return until the following day, “But I must see my own girls before I go, and put them to bed myself for once.”
Len suited the action to the word and spent a quiet hour with Isobel and Wendy before walking through the garden back to the school.

Sorry about Ruey, I think that is more my fault than hers. I wanted her there a) to do the practical things like pour tea, and b)mention Hilda so that we could see Len's concern and care for her as well as Joey. I didn't think about how it might reflect on Ruey properly.

Rachel would politely request that Carolyn write more and soon, especially about a certain box filled with letters, before some inferior drabble subconciously imprints on the minds of the CBBers, rendering them incapable of believing the SCS drabble in favour of the Not-so-SCS drabble.

In other words, I've nearly finished Hilda's Knickers - Revealed!

OK, I have I think another seven scenes to write, and the mystery of the letters will be cleared up in the fifth one. This is presuming that everything goes to plan and the characters do as I want them to. The only one I'm worried about is Joey, I think everyone else will do as they are told.

Schedule, I hope to do at least 3 parts tomorrow as it is my day off, however I have a lot of work to do for college as for some unknown reason I haven't done quite as much recently as I wanted to. Added to which we have a housefull of students coming for lunch on Sunday so I have to clear the dining room  out and ensure there will be nilling room.

I intend to get through this over the weekend at the latest.

Rachel I thought that it was Allie in your version.

It is - but you haven't yet heard WHY she has had such a long and touchingly emotional relationship with Hild'.

Looking forward to seeing your version too though (she added a touch condescendingly, she knew, but as always was incapable of making a genuine thought sound sincere)
