Title: Felicity - life after school
Post by Katarzyna on Dec 29th, 2003, 2:53pm
This PB has been bugging me since I finished CS in Court and I have finally given in.  Hope you enjoy this
                                  --------------

As the waving figures on the station platform became too distant to see clearly the young blond haired woman stopped waving and withdrew from the window.  Pushing the sliding pane down sharply she returned to her seat in the empty carriage.  For the first time in 18 years she was finally being allowed to go somewhere on her own.  She glanced up at the suitcase on the rack above her and then out of the train window.  Anyone passing would have thought she was admiring the passing countryside, whereas in fact she was lost in her own thoughts.

Despite the fact she had been born in Canada and lived on an island off the coast of south Wales her only memories were of her family home on the Gornetz Platz in Switzerland.  The fifth daughter of a family of 13 children she had grown up in a hectic environment, she had attended boarding school since she was 8, however, as the school was next to her home it never felt like she had been anywhere.  Her sisters had attended the same school, as had her mother before them, but the boys in the family, including her own twin, were sent to school in England and had at least had a sense of being away from home.

The night before she began this new adventure Felicty had been to visit her eldest sister, who herself had been away to university.  Although after three years she had returned to the Platz to marry her fiancé, a doctor at the hospital in which her own father worked.  Although Len was ten years older than her the two were alike and had always got on.  As they sat in the pretty salon of Len’s home she couldn’t whether or not Len was happy with her life.

“are you ready” Len had asked
“as I’ll ever be” she replied, excitement twinkling in her eyes “I can’t believe that this time tomorrow I’ll be in Paris”  Len’s answering smile had been somewhat bitter
“you will have such a good time” she replied wistfully
“you did”
“I know, I can’t believe that its 10 years since Margot, Con and I set out for university”
“and look at you now” Felicity grinned impishly at her sister “you and Con both happily married and Margot a doctor and a nun.  Steve is a fully qualified Vet and married into the bargain and I am sure that Charles will settle soon, after all he seemed besotted with Joanna when she came to stay”
“Don’t your making me feel old”
“never mind Len, there is always Cecil, Pip and Geoff at home still, not to mention Clare and the other wards”
“oh I know, though the thought that Cecil will be a sub-pre this year makes me feel ancient”
“well, before I go I just wanted to say thank you, without you I wouldn’t be going at all”
“anytime” Len had replied “that’s what big sisters are here for isn’t it”

It had taken some persuasion on her and Len’s behalf to arrange for her to go to University.  She was by far the least intelligent member of the family and had dropped all scientific subjects as soon as she could, preferring in stead to take extra art and dance classes.  It was in dance she excelled and since her earliest childhood this was all she had ever wanted to do.  However, as her parent’s told her frequently it was highly unlikely that she would be able to make a lifetime’s career out of her dancing after all most dancers retired early and even the most simply of injury could ruin a promising career.

Her mother would have preferred that she stay at home and help with the younger children, or if she felt she had to go away, that she went to live in the house of one of her aunts or cousins and their families.  She was, however, determined to at least try and pursue her dream.  It was Len who had come up with the solution and with the backing of her own God-mother, who had her French at school, it had been arranged that she would attend the School of Dance and Dramatic Art in Paris.  Here she would not only study dancing but also continue studying languages, which as she had been trilingual since her earliest school days were already excellent.

Some seven hours later as the sun had begun to set, the train at last pulled into the station at Paris where the service terminated.  Felicity pulled down the suitcase from the rack and gathered up her hand bag.  As she joined the queue of people waiting to disembark she could see a young man on the platform holding a sign reading “New University Students”.  She had been advised in the letter she had received confirming her acceptance to the University that upon arrival there would be coaches from the station to the main University where registration was taking place.

As her train was one of the last to arrive that evening there were only a few other’s making there way towards the coaches.  The young man with the sign had with him a porter who quickly loaded everyone’s bags onto a trolley and pushed them towards the coach park, Felicity and four or five other passengers from the same train walked behind him like ducklings following their mother. When they reached the coach and saw their bags loaded they climbed aboard.  Felicity took one of the front seats and made herself comfortable.  The engine started and as the coach was about to pull away she noticed a girl about the same age as herself tearing across the forecourt of the station

“could you wait” she asked driver “I think there might be another student”.  The driver opened the door and the girl literally fell through them hurling her case ahead of her
“thanks for waiting” her French was spoken with a very English accent
the driver grunted and closed the door as soon as she was properly through them.  She stowed her case on an empty seat and then turning to Felicity asked in French
“is this seat taken”  Felicity smiled at her before  replying in English
“no, here sit down”
“oh Hallelujah” the girl replied as she sat down  “your English”
“kind of” Felicity replied with a smile
“Marguerite Armitage” the girl introduced herself sticking out her hand “normally known as Meg”
“Felicity Maynard” she replied taking it and shaking hands
“known as” Meg prompted
“um, Felicity normally”
“no really, don’t they shorten you at all”  Felicity laughed having heard her mother’s frequent comments on the shortening of her name
“well, mama doesn’t like it”
“oh” Meg’s eyebrows shot up into her hairline “well mustn’t upset mama then”
“what are you studying” Felicity asked eager to change the subject
“Performance Art” Meg replied “you?”
“Dance and modern languages”
“I say that’s a strange mix”
“Those were the conditions” Felicity explained “if I wanted to study dance I had to study something practical too”
“Yee Gods, your parents sound frightful”
“not really, just practical, there are 13 of us after all not including wards”
“thirteen of you!!” Meg’s face mirrored her amazement “I didn’t think people went in for big families these days”
“ours does” Felicity’s reply was terse
“oh well, I am an only.  Tell you what I’ll tell you my life story then you tell me yours”
“seems fair” Felicity’s tone didn’t sound so sure
“here goes then” Meg began and Felicity sat back listening to her with a skeptical expression on her face as the coach took them to the west bank, where the main bulk of student lodgings were situated.

Yeah, a new story! I loved Court, and this is shaping up to be just as good. Is it meant to tie in with Court, e.g. the details about Felicity's life there will happen here?

ok, bear in mind that i am not in work now tilll the 5th and am having to post this on our decidedly dodgy home pc - which allows you a couple of minutes on line and then shuts down on you!....

Lesley - I smirked at KB's comment - I was asleep then!

anyway........

Despite the lateness of the hour when they arrived at the west bank there were large groups of students both inside and outside the main accommodation office.  Felicity gripped her suitcase so hard that her knuckles became white.  Never in her sheltered life had she seen such a large crowd of people, most of whom appeared to be on the verge of loosing their tempers.

Meg stood beside her a decidedly bored expression on her face
“How long is this going to take” she asked a one of the female workers as she scurried past towards the main office doors, clipboard in hand
“Please be patient” the woman replied a harassed expression on her face “we will get to your group in a moment”
“Gawd” Meg’s voice was loud and dramatic “what a fiasco”
“I’m sure they will get to us when they can” Felicity said quietly, noting the unwelcome attention Meg was drawing.  Meg herself did not seem bothered by the attention, placed her suitcase on the ground and sat on it.  Drawing out a packet of cigarettes she offered them to Felicity
“No I don’t suppose you do” she said as Felicity shook her head “oh well” Meg lit up the cigarette and tapped her foot as she smoked.

Eventually the harassed office worker appeared again, clipboard in hand
“now, let me have your names please” she began
“I’m Felicity Maynard and this is Marguerite Arimitage” she indicated Meg who wasn’t paying the slightest attention.
“right” she poured over the sheets of paper attached to the clipboard “let me see” there was a long pause as she ran her fingers down the list eventually she exclaimed “got you”.
“hurrah” Meg’s tone was both bored and sarcastic
“where are we lodging” Felicity asked politely
“Oh” she exclaimed “you are both in the same apartment, Building C apartment 14.  Its on the 4th floor.  There are two other girls sharing with you who I believe have arrived already”
“please” Felicity asked “where is building C”
“along the main walkway and it’s the second building on the right.  These are your keys” she handed the girls a set of keys each and nodded briefly too them before hurrying along to the next group of waiting students.

Felicity said nothing but picked up her suitcase and started to walk along the walkway.  If truth be told she was regretting befriending Meg on the coach and wasn’t sure she was going to enjoy sharing an apartment with her and two others
‘oh buck up Felicity Josephine’ she told herself ‘it can’t be any worse than sharing with new girls at school’
“Hi, wait for me” Meg called to her and for the sake of good manners alone Felicity stopped and waited for her to catch up.

Hope Felicity has at least some of the temper that Margot and even Len have shown in the past so she can stand up to her.

anyway..... a bit more ....

The door to the apartment stood ajar, a soft welcoming light emitting from the hallway.  Felicity and Meg stopped outside and looked at each other with a brief grin
“After you” Meg bowed comically and Felicity pushed open the door.
“Hello” she called out in French as she walked in “anyone home”
A tall dark haired girl emerged from the second door down the corridor
“Can I help you” she asked politely in French
“I’m Felicity Maynard, this is Margurite Armitage” she indicated to Meg who stood behind her “were sharing this apartment with you”
“of course” the girl replied “I am Anne-Marie Degrave. I arrived this morning so I am settled in, do you wish me to help with anything”
“Thank you” Felicity smiled at her “which room have you chosen for your own”
“This first one, the other on this side has been taken by Madeline, she has just nipped down to the shop for a few things”
“Which room do you want Meg” Felicity asked pointing at the two empty rooms next to each other”
“Whichever” was the unhelpful reply
“Fine” Felicity picked her case up and walked into the first room “I’ll take this one then”.

The small room was somewhat larger than the cubicle she had had at school.  The walls were painted in off white and down one side was a very basic single bed.  At the end of the bed stood a wardrobe and at the other side of the room a small chest of draws and a desk, above which were three book cases.  The window over looked the rest of the campus, a sprawling concrete development of high story apartment blocks most of which had only been put up during the last five years due to the sudden explosion in student numbers.

Her school training now stood her in good stead as she quickly unpacked her large suitcase and placed her belongings away in what she felt was the most appropriate of places.  As she straightened the sweaters in the bottom draw she giggled to herself
‘and I don’t even have to worry about Matey and her dorm inspections’.
Leaving the room she made her way past the other bedrooms to the end of the corridor, where on one side was the communal bathroom and on the other a lounge with a small kitchen area.

“All unpacked” Anne-Marie asked as she came into the lounge
“yes” Felicity sighed as she settled herself into the armchair “its been a very long day”.  Anne-Marie smiled at her
“where have you come from”
“The Bernese Oberland in Switzerland, what about yourself”
“not to far” Anne-Marie replied “from Guernsey.  Are you Swiss then?”
“no” Felicity replied with a laugh “I was born in Canada but my parents are English, they met in Austria before the war when mother was a school girl and we now live in Switzerland”
“Goodness, you’ve done some traveling then”
“A fair bit” Felicity grinned “but this is the first time I’ve been away from home on my own”
“me to” Anne-Marie was warming to Felicity as she spoke “I’ve been away to school before but never anywhere on my own.  I thought you were French when you first spoke” she admitted
“No, I’m not really sure what I class as I have both UK and Canadian citizenship.  We had to speak French at school, German too for that matter”
“We did at my school too” Anne-Marie grimaced as she spoke
“you were at boarding school then”
“yes in England, what about you”
“boarding school as well, though in Switzerland”
“that must have been fearful” Anne-Marie exclaimed “a Swiss boarding school.  Mums was going to send me to a French boarding school but some friends of hers had been to school in England, well Wales really, and mum liked the sound of it so I got to go there”

“Anyone want coffee” interrupted a new voice from the doorway and Felicity turned to met the last of her new housemates.
“about time” Anne-Marie laughed “I was beginning to wonder where you’d got to”
“It was chaos down there, just about everyone has arrived now and the shop is fast running out of goods” she walked over to the kitchen area and put her bag down.  Picking up the kettle she turned back to the two girls “I’m Madeline Tournelle” she introduced herself
“Pleased to meet you I’m Felicity Maynard”
“and is the last one here”
“yes” came a very weary voice from the doorway “Meg Armitage” she came into the room looking extremely fraught considering all she had been doing was unpacking
“so this is us then” Madeline looked round “I’d best get this kettle on”

Five minutes later the four girls were sitting down to coffee in their own lounge.  Madeline had explained as she made coffee that she was from the south of France and that she had been to boarding school in Toulouse.
“I can’t believe that I’m the only one that hasn’t been to boarding school” Meg exclaimed “I thought that they were such old fashioned things”
“where did you go to school” Madeline asked politely
“I went to the local grammar school in north London” Meg explained
“why did you chose to come to Paris to University rather than staying in London
“It was mum’s idea, she’s French herself, and she wanted me to spend some time in her country, I was quite pleased to get away to be honest”
Madeline studied the English girl closely and decided it would be best to change the subject.
“so how old are we all” she asked
“Nineteen” volunteered Felicity before adding with a grin “just”
“I’m eighteen, but I’ll be nineteen at Christmas” Anne-Marie blew on her coffee to cool it down
“I am older than both of you then” Madeline admitted with a shrug “I was twenty in August”
“that makes me the baby” Meg added “I was eighteen in July.  I know Flick is studying dance and modern languages, I am doing performance Art, what about you two”
“I’m studying sociology and modern history” Madeline advised “Anne Marie?” she asked turning to her
“Modern Languages as well, its something my school was very good at”
The four girls finished their coffee and noticing the lateness of the hour turned in for the night.

After saying her prayers Felicity climbed into bed and lay in the quiet darkness thinking about her adventures so far
‘Its been quite a day’ she mused staring up at the blank ceiling ‘I like Anne-Marie, she seems almost like a Chalet girl, Madeline seems ok though I have had my fill of older sisters and hope she doesn’t boss us like Len does as for Meg’ she shuddered at her own thoughts before admonishing herself ‘it won’t do to judge her straight away that wouldn’t be fair at all.  I wonder what tomorrow will bring’ was her last thought as sleep over took her.

Title: Re: Felicity - life after school
Post by Katarzyna on Jan 9th, 2004, 3:21pm
It seemed strange to Felicity the next morning to wake in the quiet silence of her own room.  She had set her alarm for 7.00 am but had woken a good half hour before.  Lying still she reflected on the difference between home, where by that time several members of her family would be up and about with children squabbling and the phone ringing for her father.  At school she had been used to early starts with everything done in a rush to get the whole dormitory bathed, dressed and beds made before breakfast.

After 10 minutes of reflection she decided that she might as well start her day.  Taking care not to wake anyone she had a quick bath and as she was coming out of the bathroom bumped into Anne-Marie who like her had risen early and was waiting to have her bath
“you an early riser too then” She asked Felicity
“force of habit” she replied with a grin “we have a very large family and if you want a bath first thing it’s best to get up early”
“mines a hang up from school” Anne-Marie admitted “we had to get up early to bath, dress and sort the dorm before breakfast”
“same as mine” Felicity replied “are you coming down to the refectory for breakfast” she asked
“yes, I’ll just bath and dress, I did my bed whilst I was waiting for you to finish” with that she disappeared into the bathroom leaving Felicity to return to her own room and dress

The two girls slipped out of the apartment and made their way down to the ground floor.  The buildings were set in groups of four, in the middle of which was a long low building which housed the refectory, where most meals were taken, the laundry and other useful amenities, including as Felicity noticed a public telephone.
They were just finishing breakfast when Madeline and Meg joined them.
“Good morning” Madeline greeted them “whatever time did you two get up”
“about 7” Anne-Marie replied “force of habit”
“I thought I heard you go out” Madeline continued “I would have been down sooner but Meg woke as I was about to leave so I waited for her”
“I nearly overslept” Meg admitted “normally mum gets me up” she pulled out a packet of cigarettes from her bag “anyone mind” she asked, lighting up before anyone could reply.
“is that all your having for breakfast” Felicity asked her “coffee and a cigarette”
“oh, I don’t do breakfast” Meg said airily as she smoked “I take it non of the rest of you smoke”
“I don’t” Anne-Marie said forcefully
“me either” Felicity added
“I do sometimes” Madeline admitted “but normally only when I am out in the evening”

When all four were ready to go they made there way to the bus stop where the university’s transport would collect them and take them into the city, where the main buildings of the university were.  Madeline got of at the humanities building, waving at the other three as they continued their journey.  The buildings housing modern languages and performance arts weren’t too far away from each other much to Felicity’s relief as she would be moving between the two.
She registered without difficulty with both her courses and picked up her timetable, from the look of it she was going to be very busy during term time as she appeared to have lectures, tutorials or practical dancing sessions each and every day.

By 4.00 pm the four girls were back at the apartment, Anne-Marie made tea and Felicity, who had been to the shop on her way back, bought out a plate of biscuits for them to share.
“well” Meg asked “what do you think so far”
“I’m going to be very very busy” Felicity said with a smile
“me as well” Madeline added
“the joys of taking two courses” Anne Marie replied “when I saw your time tables I was so glad I just elected to do one subject”
“oh well” Madeline said philosophically “what shall we do this evening”
“Go out” Meg declared dramatically “we should go and meet people”
“There’s a couple of wine bar’s just off campus” Anne-Marie sounded skeptical “we could try them”
“Good idea” Meg replied showing more enthusiasm for going out than for anything else she had done so far “lets get ready and hit the town”
“well, ok” Felicity sounded dubious, unsure what her parents would think to her frequenting wine bars
“It’ll be a laugh” Meg coaxed her “you’re a grown up now you can do what you want”
“I think we should go and meet some of the other students” Madeline spoke with determination “were all new so it will fine”

By the time the four girls arrived at the wine bar it was extremely crowded, the air was thick with smoke and you had to shout if you wanted to make yourself heard.  Music was provided by a duke box in the corner of the room which was frequently fed centimes to play modern day hits.

Madeline appeared to be confident in this setting, as did Meg whose eyes came alive as the entered the bar.  Felicity and Anne-Marie however did not feel comfortable.
“Chill you two” Meg smiled as she spoke “anyone would think you’d never been out to a bar in your lives”
Neither girl replied but looked at each other, their expressions clearly indicating that this was in fact the case.  Madeline, sensing their unease, gently steered them towards a table at the back of the bar where a large crowd of young men and several young women were seated

“Maddy darling” one of the young men got up to greet her “how’s it going” “
“fine Jaques” she replied with the traditional French double kiss “any room for us”
“sure we’ll squeeze you in” he replied with a wolfish smile then calling out to the rest round the table “shift up folks”.  There was enough room for two of the girls to sit down and Felicity found herself sat between a girl who she believed to be a few years older than herself and a man of around the same age
“hey there, I’m Merill” the girl introduced herself  and then indicating the young man “this is Phillipe”
“Felicity” she replied
“do you want a drink” Phillipe asked her
“please” Felicity replied but before she could say what she wanted to drink he went to the bar and bought over clean glasses and another pitcher of the red wine everyone on the table was drinking. Pouring out glasses for the four girls he handed Felicity’s to her
“Salute” he said picking up his own glass
“Salute” Felicity replied and took a sip of the warm sour wine.  Though she had occasionally been allowed a glass of wine with a meal at home or in a restaurant it was nothing like this and she gagged slightly at the taste.  Looking round to check the no one had noticed her she tried to listen to the conversation around her.

It appeared the Madeline and Jaques new each other as they were on the same course, in fact most of the group they were with appeared to be on one social studies course or another.  The talk around the table soon turned to the right of everyone to an education, the fast expanding student numbers and the lack of suitable housing for students in the city.  Felicity sat and listened, she had not realised how different it had been for some students to get to university, the reason many were older than her appeared to be because they had had to work in order to fund their own way, most of them still held down part time jobs whilst studying.  Suddenly she felt quite ashamed of the fact that she was here because her god mother and eldest sister were meeting the cost of her studies rather than paying her own way.  As a result of her discomfort she didn’t notice the amount she was drinking or the fact that each time she emptied the glass Phillipe would refill it for her.

Eventually she felt extremely light headed, unable to take in what was being said around her.  She excused herself from the table to use the bathroom.  Meg and Anne-Marie both followed her.
“Are you all right” Anne-Marie asked concerned for her friend
“Fine” Felicity replied “you”
“ok, I guess” Anne-Marie replied “I think I might go home though in a bit”
“Oh don’t be such a spoil sport” Meg argued “the evenings just starting”
“Hardly” Felicity squinted at her watch wondering why she was finding it difficult to read the figures
“I’m going home” Anne-Marie declared “you coming” she asked
“no” Meg replied and turned to leave the bathroom
“Felicity” Anne-Marie asked, noting her friend had turned very white
“Yes, I think I would like some fresh air”
The two girls made their way back into the bar and said their goodbyes
“I don’t think you should walk home on your own” Phillipe argued “there will be a whole load of us going in a bit”
“no, we are going now” Anne-Marie spoke forcefully.  Phillipe looked at the two girls and noting Anne-Marie’s determined expression the state of Felicity said formally
“In that case young ladies, may I escort you to your lodgings”

Hadn't she come back to school to help them with the Nativity Play? I think she developed anorexia. So if this is a prelude to this, she's going to have a very nasty time at the ballet school! :o

It must be a quite a few years earlier though - wasn't Cecil Headmistress? And Court seemed to be set in present day - wheras this must be in the late 60's/early 70's.

But I seem to recall her coming from the ballet school, so either she had a long time there, or we're miscalculating the date somehow.

Okay, after a lot of searching, here's what it says about Felicity in "Court":

Felicity herself lived in Paris and had caused a mini sensation when she produced the family’s first grandchild, James, only 10 months after leaving school to train as a dancer.  She had married later but never had more children.

Obviously I was confusing things with another drabble.  :-[

But that means she's really going to have to get a wriggle on! I can't help wondering if Phillipe might be James' father!

Thanks for the nice comments - sorry about the criptic clue - no i wasn't just making sure you read Court properly!!  :D

well it's now Monday afternoon (which doesn't start at 10.38 am Chloe, nice try though) so here you go...........

By 8.00 am the next morning Anne-Marie was extremely concerned that Felicity had not yet made an appearance from her room.  Phillipe had walked the two girls home last night and then Felicity had insisted on making him a coffee whilst she herself had gone straight to bed.  Meg had surfaced from her own room about fifteen minutes before, rather pale faced and clutching her head

“What time did you get in” Anne-Marie whispered to her as she fell into the armchair in the lounge
“about 2” she replied weakly “Madeline and Jaques walked me home then they went back to his, apparently they have been together for a while”
“Oh, have you seen Felicity at all”
“no she was in bed when I got in, or at least I think she was, I’m sure I heard something from her room”.
“its strange that she’s not up”
“don’t worry about it, she’s probably having a lie in, did you see how much she drank last night” Meg giggled causing Anne-Marie to give her such a look that Meg felt like she was being ticked off by one of the Prefects, a body of girls to which she had never aspired, at her old school.
“perhaps I should try and wake her”
“if she’s hung over she won’t be grateful” Meg warned
“but she’s got lectures this morning” Anne-Marie
“Try it then” Meg reached into her dressing gown pocket for her cigarettes “but don’t blame me if she yells at you”

Taking a freshly poured cup of coffee laced with milk and sugar she paused at Felicity’s bedroom door.  She tapped gently and waited, having got no response she began to tap harder, eventually concern for her flatmate over came her belief in personal privacy and she tried the handle of the door.  The internal bolt had not been drawn across and she went in.  The curtains were drawn but the sunlight shone through highlighting the somewhat chaotic state of the room.  In the middle of the bed lay Felicity, fast asleep, the sheets in complete disarray around her.  As for the rest of the room, there were clothes littering the floor, an empty wine bottle and two glasses on the corner of the desk.  Anne-Marie gasped, this was so different to the tidy room that Felicity had shown her on the first day.

Placing the coffee on the bedside table she lent over and whispered
“Felicity time to get up”.  Felicity stirred but when she did not come fully awake Anne-Marie she stepped back and said in a louder voice “Felicity, its gone 8 don’t you have a lecture this morning”
“Leave me alone” Felicity said as she slowly opened her eyes “Oh dear” she continued as she tried gingerly to sit up.  Noticing Anne-Marie for the first time she coloured deeply red
“Good Morning” Anne-Marie said brightly “I’ve bought you some coffee”
“thank you” Felicity’s voice was no more than a whisper
“do you want me to open the curtains”
“No, please leave them” Felicity said quickly “my head’s pounding”
“are you all right” Anne-Marie asked gently
“I think I was a little stupid with the wine last night” Felicity grimaced as she lent over to take the coffee of the side “how did we get home”
Anne-Marie gave Felicity a slightly startled look
“we walked, with Phillipe from the bar, don’t you remember”
“to be honest, I don’t remember much about last night at all” she sipped at the coffee her pretty face furrowed as she tried to recall the events of last night.
“I’ll leave you to it” Anne-Marie backed away to the door
“Thank you for waking me” Felicity smiled at her “I’ll drink this and get up, my first lecture is at ten so I should be able to make it”

Felicity glanced round the chaos of her room as she drank her coffee.  She could clearly remember going out to the bar and sitting with a large group of Madeline’s friends but after that she could recall nothing, save for that she had felt uncomfortable about something.
‘oh dear, what would Len say’ were her immediate thoughts ‘second night away from home and I go out drink too much and wind up hung over and with a gappy memory.  Thank goodness Anne-Marie woke me so at least I won’t miss lectures’.

With that she pulled back the covers and went to swing her legs out of bed, they felt strangely heavy and as she looked down she noticed the bruising. ‘I must have fallen’ she thought as she wrapped herself in her dressing gown.  She straightened the bed and picked up the clothing from the floor, pausing slightly as she picked up the dirty wine glasses and empty bottle.  She had a strange recollection of a dark haired young man smiling down at her, though she couldn’t place either him or when this was.  Shaking her head gently she said out loud
“Felicity Maynard, you are a disgrace, from now on no more wine”.

Despite a longer than normal soak in the bath she still felt bruised and uncomfortable.  Glad that this mornings lectures were part of her modern languages course as she didn’t feel up to any practical dance work.  Finally dressed she made her way to the lounge to pick up her jacket

“Are you ok” Anne-Marie put the book she was reading onto her lap
“Fine” Felicity said shortly “ready for lectures anyway”
“do you want breakfast”
“no” Felicity’s reply was instant and her face blanched at the thought “I don’t think I am up to that yet”.
“lets go then” Anne-Marie stood up, from the way she handled her book it was as though she didn’t want Felicity to see it but from the cover Felicity had already recognized it.
“what are you reading” she couldn’t help ask
“oh, erm, it’s a bit embarrassing really” Anne-Marie flushed pink as she showed Felicity the book
“Why embarrassing” Felicity asked, her eyes had begun to sparkle with mischief
“Well, it’s only a kids book, but the author went to my school, and, well, they’ve always been a favourite when I’m feeling down”
“Actually, she’s one of my favourite authors to” Felicity confessed “and she doesn’t just write Juveniles”
“oh I know” Anne-Marie agreed “I have most of them with me”
“So you went to the Chalet School then”
“I, um, how on earth did you know that” Anne-Marie looked shocked
“because silly, so did I” Felicity smiled at her
“you were at the Swiss branch”
“yes”
“oh” Anne-Marie’s eyes became very wide as certain things Felicity had told her clicked into place “but, you mean, your”
“Yes” said Felicity with a dramatic sigh “I am Josephine M Bettany’s daughter, or at least one of them”

The two girls picked up their bags and made their way into university all the time chatting about their experiences at school, Felicity’s discomfort over the night before temporarily forgotten

The first few weeks of term seemed to fly by.  Felicity found herself more and more in Anne-Marie’s company as it transpired that the two girls shared similar ideals and beliefs, probably through having both been to the same school, albeit in different branches.  She had held true to her vow to steer clear of wine and concentrate on her studies, as a result she was enjoying her lift at university taking time to join in with social groups and events.

Madeline found herself more and more caught up in her coursework and the various political and social groups which were protesting about student hardship and rights.  As for Meg, who had initially made herself out to be a somewhat brash confident young lady, she was finding it harder and harder to cope at university.  Used to living at home and being cared for by her parents she had become very homesick and withdrawn.

Correspondence

From Felicity to her sister Len Entwistle

Dear Len

I hope that you and Reg are both well and that everything is fine at home.  Can I thank you again for helping me in coming away to university.  I am having a wonderful time, enjoying my courses and living life to the full.  Anne-Marie and I are going to the ballet tomorrow night as they do student concessions and we decided to treat ourselves.

I hope to see you all at Christmas, Mamma didn’t say who was coming this year but she obviously has some huge surprise in mind as she was very secretive about it.  Could you ask her to sign a copy of the new book for Anne-Marie’s Christmas present?  I would like to give it to her before term ends.

Anyway, I have more letters to write, the joys of being such a big family, if you see Godmother please can you give her a big hug from me and tell her what a wonderful time I’m having.

See you soon
Love
Felicity.

Title: Re: Felicity - life after school
Post by Katarzyna on Jan 12th, 2004, 4:01pm
As term progressed Felicity got more and more involved with her coursework.  Her modern languages course she found fairly straight forward, mainly due to the groundwork that had been put in by the school.  Her dance course didn’t only feature the practical side of things, which she knew she would enjoy, but also the history of dance and some physiology.  This she was finding something of a challenge.

Around eight weeks into the twelve term Anne-Marie noticed that Felicity looked tired and drawn, one evening when the pair of them were sitting working in the lounge she took a long look at her friend as she worked.  Felicity’s skin had always been pale, a by product of such a fair complexion, but recently she seemed to be bruised around her eyes.  Eventually she put down her pen and asked.

“Felicity are you all right” the concern in her voice startled Felicity that she looked up from her book immediately
“what makes you ask that”
“well” began Anne-Marie not sure exactly how to go on “you look very pale and tired”
“I’m just a bit stressed I suppose”
“Your not eating properly either”
“I am” Felicity disagreed
“no, your not” Anne-Marie spoke bluntly “you haven’t had breakfast at all for the last week or so and before that you were only picking at your toast”
“I have been feeling a little queasy that’s all”
“Will you go and get checked over” Anne-Marie asked her
“look, I’m fine, I’ve probably just been over doing it”
“If your feeling sick then you should get it checked out, you might have strained something when you were dancing” Anne Marie tried to coax her friend but Felicity dug her heels in.  Eventually realising she was getting no where Anne-Marie went back to her own studies.

Anne-Marie’s comments had not passed Felicity by completely.  She herself was starting to worry about her health.  The fact that recently she nearly always woke feeling queasy and a couple of times had in fact been sick, she didn’t remember when she had last eaten breakfast and but by lunch time she was always ravenous.  Although she had been careful, knowing that as a dancer she couldn’t afford to put on too much weight her ballet mistress had told after one lesson that she thought that she was putting on weight and that she should be more careful with her diet.  It didn’t help that she also felt tired yet had difficulty getting to sleep, when she did sleep she was haunted by dreams that woke her, but that she then couldn’t quite remember.

The following day Felicity and Anne-Marie had gone into university together, Anne-Marie to an Italian language class and Felicity to the dance studio.  They had agreed to meet by the main entrance after class to go for lunch, but when Felicity failed to show up Anne-Marie began to get concerned.  She her way through the Performance Art building
“Hi, Anne-Marie” a voice called from behind her “wait”
“Meg, have you seen Felicity” Anne-Marie asked as she turned to wait for her flat mate
“I was just coming to find you” Meg explained “you’d better come this way”
she led Anne-Marie through the corridors and round to a quiet area of the building. Knocking on the closed door of one of the rest rooms Meg explained
“she had a funny turn”
“when, what happened” Meg asked
“I’m not sure, all I know is that we were in dance class and she fainted”
The door to the rest room opened and a young nurse stood before them
“Please” Anne-Marie asked “how’s Felicity, can we see her”
“of course” the nurse stood to one side to let the girls in
“Felicity” Anne-Marie began but Felicity held up her hand
“sorry” she began “I think you were right, I have been over doing things”
“so you’ll go and get checked out”  Anne-Marie asked.  Felicity glanced over to the nurse who was still standing at the door
“Yes” she sighed “Nurse here has arranged for me to go to the doctors this afternoon”

Oh dear, what a blood thirsty lot you all are.  And Rachel please stop singing and get on with writing your own drabble!!

anyway... next bit...

Felicity pulled on her cardigan and slipped out from behind the screens.  The doctor, who was now seated behind the large desk indicated for her to sit down.

“Now Miss Maynard” he began “you can take that worried look off your face for a start, you aren’t seriously ill”
“Please” Felicity’s voice shook as she spoke, the examination had been something of an ordeal “what’s wrong with me, why did I faint”
“You have anemia, it’s quite common for women in your condition” the doctor spoke airily as he started to write something down on the paper in front of him
“condition” Felicity repeated
“yes dear, it’s nothing to worry about, I will give you a prescription for some iron tablets”
“and that will make things better”
“well, it will help you as things progress, I will also deal with your referral to the maternity clinic”
“the what” Felicity interrupted
“maternity clinic, they will see you throughout your pregnancy”
“my what”
“pregnancy” the doctor looked up at her with surprise “Miss Maynard, I’m sorry, I thought you realised, your pregnant”
“I, um, what, how” Felicity gabbled out the words clinging onto the arms of the chair like a drowning man would grab at a life belt
“now I am sure you can work out how for yourself” the doctor’s voice had become quite patronizing “I would estimate that you are somewhere in the region of between 8 and 10 weeks pregnant, surely you knew”
“No, I didn’t” Felicity fumbled in her cardigan pocket for her handkerchief as tears started to roll down her face “how can I be”
“really my dear, I am sure you can work that out for yourself, take this prescription to the pharmacy and get it filled, make sure you eat properly and take the tablets” he dismissed her with a wave of his hand and she stumbled out of the consulting room unable to focus.

“Well” Meg demanded as soon as she got out into the waiting room “what did he say”
“I have anemia” Felicity whispered
“oh, well nothing serious then” Anne-Marie slipped her arm through Felicity’s and steered her out into the street
“did you get a script for iron tablets, that’s what they gave my cousin when she had it” Meg added
“yes” Felicity muttered not looking at either girl.  Anne-Marie glanced at her friend, noting her pale and worried expression she continued
“lets go home, I am sure we could all do with a cup of tea”

As they traveled home on the bus Meg watched Felicity carefully, what she hadn’t added to her earlier comment about the iron tablets was that her cousin had needed them because she was pregnant.  She was aware that Felicity had been skipping breakfast and that a couple of times she had been sick, with the revelation that Felicity had anemia she was beginning to put two and two together.  Wisely she decided not to say anything ‘after all I may be putting two and two together and coming up with six’.

When the three girls got back to the flat Madeline and a group of her friends were already there, sitting in the lounge with coffee discussing the current political situation.  Madeline glanced up at the three girls and noting Felicity’s pale and shocked expression quickly persuaded her friends to go down to the refectory and continue their discussion.

As the group were leaving Felicity glanced up at a dark haired young man who seemed strangely familiar, though for the life of her she couldn’t place him.  For some reason she could not even begin to understand when he looked at her and smiled why she felt a sudden shiver run up her spine.  As the last of them left Madeline returned

“are you all right” she asked Felicity, genuinely concerned at the younger girl’s pallor.  Felicity could only nod as she sunk down into one of the chairs.  Madeline raised her eyebrows as she continued to study her flat-mate
“Everyone want tea” Anne-Marie asked making her way to the kettle
“please” Meg replied as she fell into the chair next to Felicity’s.  As Felicity did not appear able to talk at present she answered Madeline’s unspoken query “Felicity’s feeling a little rough, she fainted in class”
“but you are better now” Madeline asked
“I will be” Felicity spoke quietly, her voice very strained
“you have been to the doctors?” Madeline continued
“yes, I have anemia apparently”
“did they say what had caused it” Felicity refused to answer this turning her head away from the others.  Meg looked at Madeline her expression clearly indicating that she was more concerned about Felicity than she was letting on.  Madeline put her hand on Meg’s arm and then pointed to the open doorway to the hall.  Whilst Felicity’s head was turned into the side of the chair and Anne-Marie was busy with the kettle they slipped out.

“what is it” Madeline asked the younger girl
“I’m not sure that anemia is Felicity’s only problem” Meg confided
“go on” Madeline asked warily
“Well, its just that she’s been avoiding breakfast and now she has anemia, I’m just wondering whether she might be going to have a baby”
“Felicity, pregnant” Madeline was clearly startled
“I know” Meg replied “it seems highly unlikely”
“have you said anything to her” Madeline asked
“No I didn’t want to, I hoped that she might confide in us”
“well, you might be clutching at straws so there could be nothing for her to tell”
“I hope so, I really do” Meg added as she turned and made her way back into the lounge.  Madeline kept an eye on Felicity whilst they drank their tea and the more she watched the younger girl the more she believe that Meg might be right in thinking that Felicity was keeping something from them.

Felicity herself was still in a state of deep shock.  How could she be pregnant?  She knew it didn’t just happen, but then again she didn’t exactly know how you did become pregnant.  Her only experiences were those of her mother and her mother’s friends, who seemed disappear off the face of the earth and reappeared with a baby after a few months of being “busy” as her mother called it.  ‘maybe it’s all a mistake, maybe the doctor’s wrong’ she thought to herself, but in reality she knew he wasn’t she just wished she knew what had happened.

Poor Felicity. And why did no-one explain the facts of life before she left home, if Joey wouldn't then Len should have? Poor kid, she'll be blamed for something she knew nothing about.

I tend to take everything Rachel and Carolyn P say with a pinch of salt - anyway they can kill (and will kill) anyone they please in their own drabble!

anyway, to keep you all happy ... bit more...

Felicity sat motionless in the chair for much of the rest of the day, not speaking to anyone just lost in her own thoughts.  Eventually Anne-Marie, who had been sitting beside her, could bear it no longer leaning over and taking Felicity’s hand in hers.
“Felicity, it’s not just the anemia is it” she asked gently
“I don’t want to talk about it” she replied, her voice extremely subdued
“are you sure, it might help to talk it through, what ever it is that’s bothering you”
“I can’t” Felicity whispered.

Meg who had been sat on the opposite side of the room, to all appearances lost in the glossy magazine spread out on her lap looked up at the two girls.  She knew that she was younger than the other two and, if she was honest with herself, that she had a more immature outlook on life.  However, from their conversations it had appeared to her that both Felicity and Anne-Marie had led extremely sheltered lives at their boarding school, knowing little of what happened in the real world.  The age of flower power, peace and free love for all appeared not to have registered with them, whereas for Meg it had been a reality of living and growing up in 1960’s London. She watched various emotions change across Felicity’s face and, eventually, she made up her mind.

“You might as well tell us Felicity” she said, using the superior tone that she knew annoyed her flat mate
“tell you what exactly” was Felicity’s immediate reply, her head flying up and her eye’s sparkling
“what has caused your anemia”
“you know” Felicity’s tone was accusatory
“I can guess” Meg replied, her own voice changing to one which conveyed both sympathy and understanding “it will be obvious sooner or later” she added gently.  Felicity looked at the younger girl as though assessing what she had said.  Meg opened her mouth to continue but Anne-Marie interrupted
“leave her alone” she warned “it isn’t anyone’s business but Felicity’s and if there is anything more to tell she will tell us when she’s ready”
“Anne-Marie” Felicity pulled her hand out of hers and turned to face her, taking a deep breath she said shakily “the doctor says my anemia is because I’m pregnant”
“your what” her friend looked horrified at this announcement
“she’s going to have a baby” Meg said dryly
“you can’t be” Anne-Marie exclaimed
“apparently I can” Felicity replied, tears beginning to fall from her eyes
“how” Anne-Marie asked
“I wish I knew” Felicity sobbed

Madeline, who had been sitting quietly at the far side of the room where she had pulled her chair earlier walked over to the three girls.  Noting Felicity’s distress and Anne-Marie’s shock she told Meg to make more coffee as she sat down in front of Felicity

“do you really not know how it happened” she asked gently and when Felicity shook her head wildly she continued “you do know where babies come from”
“from their mother’s” she replied shakily
“ok, and how do they get there” Madeline asked
“I don’t know” Felicity admitted “Mamma said she would tell me when I needed to know, I know she told my older sisters when they got engaged”
“didn’t your school tell you anything” Madeline was shocked
“no” Anne-Marie answered for her friend “they don’t teach that sort of thing at the Chalet School”

Madeline took a deep breath and muttered a swift prayer under her breath.  Looking at the two frightened young girls in front of her she began to explain to them the facts of life, as she had done some months ago to her younger sisters when they started asking questions about one of their classmates who was pregnant.  Talking plainly with no frills she explained the whole procedure from start to finish.  Finally she said
“and that’s it really, do you both understand now”  The two girls nodded but Felicity looked confused “what is it” Madeline asked gently
“I haven’t, ever, you know”
“haven’t slept with anyone?” Madeline asked “are you sure”
“Yes” Felicity answered her tone adamant
“how far along did the doctor say he thought you were” Madeline asked
“at least 8 weeks” Felicity admitted
“so since you came away to university”
“I suppose, I don’t recall..” Felicity paused her eyes going extremely wide and what colour their was in her already pale face draining away.  She swayed in her seat and Anne-Marie, who was shocked by the whole matter yet determined to help her friend, put her arm round her
“what it is” she asked
“that night” Felicity whispered “but I had drunk so much, I don’t remember”
“which night” Madeline asked
“do you mean the second night we were here” Meg asked “when we went to the bar”
“yes” Felicity replied
“do you remember anything” Meg asked
“I remember going out to the bar, and drinking but then it all becomes a blur”
“I remember” Anne-Marie said gently
“tell me”
“well, Felicity and I walked home with, oh bother I can’t remember is name” Anne-Marie replied “I went straight to bed but” she trailed off and looked at her friend who was shaking her head
“I wish I could remember” Felicity was getting distressed by the whole conversation “I just can’t seem to though”
“never mind” Madeline replied “it’s done now”.
“I think” said Felicity rising to her feet “that I need to go and lie down, I’m not feeling to well”.

Felicity stayed in her room for the rest of the day and most of the day after.  She wrestled with her memories and her emotions.  No matter how hard she tried she could not remember what had happened that fateful night, nor could she come to terms with the information that Madeline had given her about what must have happened.  Above all she kept saying to herself “why, why me, why has this happened.  I don’t want a baby, I want to dance, to have a career”.  Lying in the darkened room another thought was beginning to grow at the back of her mind “whatever are Mamma and Papa going to say”

You are mixing thread again Pat.  Jo did not necessarilly have quads in this universe/thread.

It may sound far fetched to some of you but I once had to deal with a young member of staff who had no idea that she could possibly be pregnant, no idea of where babies came from and was actually engaged.  That was in the early 70's.  she had been to a private school, too.

that was really good Kat and it's so good to see the more worldlywise girls helping her.  Poor Felicity!

Waiting for more of this really good drabble!

Sorry no more story tonight - have had to do some work this afternoon.

For those wondering how realistic Felicity being so naive is then remember she has been sheltered by her strongly catholic parents and shielded from real life by home and school.

My mother taught in hospital and home eductation, some pupils were pregnant school girls and even in the late 1990's some didn't realise how they had got pregnant, couldn't remember anything or in a couple of cases actually gave birth without realising they were pregnant.

More story tomorrow afternoon - work permitting!!

I am loving this story and have been struck by a small pb. Unfortuately it just whispered in passing and has moved on. Perhaps one of you will find him and take him up on his idea (please). He was mumbling something about the cs starting lessons on the facts of life. Now I want to know who taught it, who was being taught and the no doubt humourous antics involved. Come on one of you comic genius's or is it genii? Put me out of my misery.

I have to agree that Felicity’s lack of knowledge is completely believable, speaking from the “sheltered Catholic family” perspective.  Being one of a family with 8 kids is no guarantee of information on the process.  Even the “Help, I’m bleeding to death” moment elicited more embarrassment than instruction.

*See Kathy stuck instructing a human reproduction module in which the students probably know more than she does. :-[ :-[*
(Thankfully there are now more junior faculty to take this one.)

For a sensitively done version of introducing facts of life to the CS curriculum, see Catherine’s "Growing Pains," at http://members.lycos.co.uk/thecbb/growingpainsrevisited.htm -- at least I think this is the most recent version. (More stories always welcome, though!)

She did (and still does) deserve my pity.  Have heard of quite a few families where they were not told anything at all about facts of life.  Have a friend (from a Methodist background) who very nearly ended up in a nasty situation as no one told her. Her Mum died when she was eleven and her dad never asked any aunties to help out and wss probably knowing him too embarrassed to say anything.  I didn't know her then but as far as I know she used Lesley's method of escape.

Thank goodness my Mum told me about things even back in the mid 60's.

Post by Katarzyna on Today at 12:01pm
Felicity managed to put the fact that she was expecting a baby to the back of her mind for the next few days.  She went about her usual routine of going into college during the day and studying in the flat in the evenings.  However, it was obvious to all those who she met that there was something wrong, her whole personality had changed and she had become withdrawn and reclusive.

The other three girls in the flat didn’t mention it, having decided between themselves to only speak about it if Felicity should bring the matter up.  Not only were they concerned that Felicity was not dealing with matters but they were concerned with the fact that Felicity would soon not be able to continue with her studies, particularly her dance classes.

Eventually Felicity’s state of almost complete denial of the facts was broken by the arrival of her appointment to attend the maternity clinic.  She declined offers from all three of the girls to go with her and made her way by metro to the small clinic just outside the centre of the city, close to one of the main teaching hospitals.  As she pushed open the door to the clinic she was hit at once by the sound of wailing children, not only did the clinic deal with pre-natal work but also post-natal check ups for both mother and baby. The sound reminded her of home, where during her early childhood their had always been baby’s around.

She made her way to the large desk at the front of the waiting room where a bored looking receptionist say filing her already immaculate nails.  She glanced up as Felicity approached, taking in the fact that she was extremely young and, after careful consideration of her left hand, unmarried.
“Hello, my name is Felicity Maynard, I have an appointment at 10.15” Felicity said shyly
“Of course, you have come on your own Miss Maynard” the receptionist spoke loudly putting particular emphasis on the word Miss
“Yes” Felicity’s pretty blue eyes had taken on a flint like gleam
“your husband won’t be joining you”
“No”
“In that case, take a seat your midwife will be out to see you shortly”

Felicity moved over to the hard plastic seats that stood in rows in the middle of the waiting room and took out her book.  She could not concentrate on the text though as the combination of her anger and the noise level in the room did not permit it.  Seething inside about the receptionist’s attitude she stared blankly over the top of her book at the tiled floor.

Eventually her attention was caught by the entrance of a pretty young lady, elegantly dressed and with her hair set in the latest fashion.  For some reason this lady looked familiar though for the life of her she couldn’t recall whether she had ever met her before.  As this newcomer finished talking to the receptionist she turned to take a seat, with a loud gasp she exclaimed
“Goodness, Felicity Maynard, what ever are you doing here”

“I’m sorry” Felicity looked blankly at the lady standing in front of her “I don’t recall”
“No you probably don’t” the lady laughed as she sat down in the chair next to her “though I would recognise you anywhere, you always were the prettiest of things, though it’s been about six years since I last saw you”
“six years” Felicity echoed
“yes, I left school about six years ago and came back to France”
“sorry, but I really can’t remember”
“Madam Routelle” she said with a grin “though you would probably remember me best as Solange de Chaumontel”
“Audrey’s friend” Felicity gasped
“that’s right”
“No wonder I don’t remember you that well, last time I saw you was when you left school, I was only twelve”
“and now, if I can remember my maths, you are 18”
“19, but only just” admitted Felicity
“You have left school now then” Solange asked
“yes, I am at university now” Felicity’s face clouded as she spoke
“What are you studying”
“Dance and modern languages” Felicity’s tone was flat as she replied and Solange noted the unhappy look on the younger girl’s face, deciding to change the subject she interrupted
“Now I will tell you what I have been doing” she advised gaily “I came to Paris after school with my aunt, she was desperate to return home, we settled in and I got a job at a florists.  My boss is a lovely woman some ten years older than me and about three years ago she introduced me to her brother who was studying to be a lawyer, what can I say” she shrugged as she spoke “we fell in love and six months later we were married”
“and now” Felicity prompted glad to listen to someone else’s story and not worry about her own problems
“and now I am going to have a baby, or at least that is what I am hoping the doctor will confirm today” she studied the younger girl closely before she spoke again, eventually she continued “you are also expecting?”

Felicity flushed and stared at the floor, tears forming in her eyes and she nodded confirmation of Solange’s question
“Yes” she whispered
“but it is something to be joyful about” Solange took the younger girl’s hand in hers
“not in my case” Felicity whispered
“always” Solange said firmly “you are bringing a new life into this world”
“but” the tears had begun to fall as she spoke “I’m not married, I’m a disgrace, my parent’s” she trailed off unable to continue
“I am sure things aren’t as bad as they seem” Solange tried to comfort the younger girl as her sob’s were drawing attention from the other women in the room
“they are” Felicity wailed burying her head in her hands.

A young midwife appeared at that point to call Felicity into her examination room
“After we have both been seen we will go for coffee” Solange suggested and Felicity nodded her agreement as she was led away.
