Title: Jack & Joey: The Engagement
Post by Rachael on Dec 23rd, 2003, 7:33pm
This plot bunny bit me a while ago and I’ve written it over the past week, thinking that the “aww” factor would make for a good Christmas posting. EBD blatantly glosses over Jack & Joey’s engagement, and if, like me, you want to know what happened and how he proposed, then this drabble is for you! It’s a fill-in chapter for Exile – I’ve copied across EBD’s “solid lump of comfort” bit in this post and mine follows on from there ….. BUT, I’m also conscious that we all have our own private fantasies of this special moment so please forgive me if this doesn’t match up to yours!

Oh, and as it’s Christmas and I feel imbued with festive spirit (that’s goodwill, as well as hard liquor, you cynics!), I’m going to post it all at once – no gaps, no cliffhangers!  Is this a first for the Board?

Thank you, Catherine_B because this drabble was inspired by the brilliant Alternative Romance  - you wrote so beautifully about Nancy and Kathie that I just hope I’ve managed to capture some of the same in Jack & Joey’s relationship …  :D

And thank you, Lesley, for the reassurances  :-*

The shock was too much for Joey. She gave a funny little gasp, and would have fallen, but for the young doctor’s arm which was still encircling her. He lifted her, laid her on a couch, and speedily brought her round. Jo came to herself, to find that she was lying on the settee in the salon at Die Rosen, with Madge hovering anxiously round, and Jack Maynard holding her closely to him. For no particular reason she suddenly buried her head on his shoulder, and began to weep even more bitterly than a terrified Hermann was doing at the other side of the room.
Madge would have tried to console her; but Jack Maynard gave her a shock. Holding Joey very tightly to him, he said in tones there was no mistaking, “Never mind, my darling. It’s all over, and Robin is safe. Just cry it all out and you’ll feel better.”
And before the stunned Madge could gasp out any ejaculation, Joey sobbed, “Oh, Jack – what a – solid lump – of comfort you – are!”
After that, as the lady of the house told her husband later on, the only thing she could do was leave the room, taking weary Hermann with her, and wait with what patience she could assume for a full account of the story when, to quote herself, “Jack and Joey should have come to their common or garden senses”.

Following Madge and Hermann’s hasty departure from the salon, Joey continued to sob, unburdening herself of all the strains and stresses of the past few weeks: the urgent move of the School up to the Sonnalpe; the Chalet School Peace League and the need to hide this incriminating document, which had been signed by so many Chaletians, past and present, from the Nazis; Frau Eisen and Hermann spying on the picnic party, followed by the desperate search for Hilary and Robin and the overwhelming relief that they had returned safely. And finally, underneath all of this, the dawning horror that Hitler’s Reich threatened to envelop more than Austria alone. So Joey wept on, lamenting the demise of her happy, carefree childhood, the end of peace as Germany strove to expand her empire and the changes which would inevitably engulf her beloved Tiernsee, meaning that her world could never be the same again.

Throughout this outburst, Jack held her close, his strong arms encompassing her as she buried her tousled crow’s head in his chest. He said nothing, intermittently stroking the lanky black locks that had escaped their plaits and gently rubbing Jo’s back as her shoulders heaved against the floodgates. Eventually the storm subsided and Jo began to relax, her breathing steadying and her tears beginning to dry. They sat together in intimate silence for some minutes, conscious that their relationship had crossed a boundary into an area deeper than mere friendship but neither wishing to break the spell by being the first to speak. Instead, Joey reached out with sensitive fingers, placing them on the hand which still clasped her arm. Gently, she traced the contours of his doctor’s hand – the clipped nails, kept clean and short, the hardened knuckles and the veins rising prominently beneath his skin. It was as if she saw or noticed them for the first time and Jack delighted in her touch, marvelling that the moment for which he had yearned for so long had finally arrived.

Typically, it was Jo who broke their reverie.
“For how long?” she asked with stunning disregard for either grammar or sense.
Jack, however, smiled for he knew his Jo. “For the past two years”, he replied, “… At least …”
A hint of pink brushed the sallow cheeks. “I had no idea”, she murmured, confused.
Jack tucked a couple of stray hairs behind Jo’s ear before tilting her chin until they could look each other in the face, blue eyes meeting black. “I was prepared to wait … until you were ready”, he stated simply.
Joey could feel the colour rising at these words. Unaccustomed to such blushes she was caught off guard, uncertain how to behave or react, and disconcerted by a sudden and quite uncharacteristic shyness. Jack, sensing that affirmative action was required in order to avoid any awkwardness, bent his head and kissed her, tenderly but firmly, on the lips. For a split second she froze, an unbidden memory of another kiss, planted by an unwanted suitor, Dr Hunter, stirring in her memory. But this kiss was different – this kiss spoke of partnership, love and respect and Joey found herself surrendering to an embrace that she had never dreamed could be so uplifting, so true.

As they parted, Joey sat up so that she could face Jack on the same level, curling her long legs comfortably beneath her. There was some space between them but each had unconsciously draped one arm along the back of the settee and their fingers intertwined as though they must have some form of physical contact.
“So when did you first know?” she demanded, having recovered some of her self-possession.
Jack laughed. “Am I allowed no secrets, Jo?” he teased. “Why should I swell your head with tales of my unrequited love?”
Joey punched him playfully, amazed that her own emotions could transform Jack Maynard so swiftly from chum and brother figure to something much closer. “I’ll tell if you’ll tell first!” she teased back.
Jack grinned as he relented. “It’s difficult to say”, he began, “When I first met you, you were an unruly tyke of thirteen, I think it was – untidy, tomboyish, fiercely devoted to Madge and the school. Mollie had spoken of you and Madge so much that it felt as though I knew you and I know she regarded you both as surrogate sisters. It just became easy to think of you that way myself, especially as you spent so much time at Pretty Maids. Mother and Father also spoke highly of you both and you came to form part of my extended family.”

“What changed?” Joey persisted.
“You grew up, of course,” Jack’s eyes shone. “The crazy, impetuous schoolgirl became a crazy impetuous woman!”
“Are you implying that I’m still just a young and silly girl?” Jo asked suspiciously.
“No, sweetheart, but if you want to infer it …” Jack believed in carrying the war into the enemy’s camp.
Joey wielded her fist as if to punch him again so he continued.
“Joey, I’ve always admired you …your tenacity, your loyalty to friends and family, your sense of justice and your caring for others. You’ve had all those attributes since I’ve known you and rather than them diluting as you became older, they’ve strengthened, becoming the backbone of who you are …” Jack paused as his words sank in. “But you’ve also matured … become softer, more feminine … you’re graceful, beautiful …”
Jo made as if to scoff at this last.
“Well, maybe not beautiful in the conventional sense, Joey-girl, but you are to me. I love your straight black hair, your pointed face, your pale skin, those dark, dark eyes, so full of life one minute and dreamy the next… “

Recognising that Joey’s tears were threatening to re-surface, Jack deemed it prudent to lighten the atmosphere.
“But most of all”, he proclaimed innocently,” You’ve been invaluable in progressing my career …”
It had the desired effect. Joey could never be described as sentimental but Jack’s loving accolade had touched her innermost core and she had felt as if she might burst from the range of emotions sweeping through her. This last comment, however, was unfathomable and it jolted her interest, pressing the tears back into abeyance.
“What on earth do you mean?” she challenged him indignantly, “I’ve had absolutely no bearing on your career!”
“Oh but you have” averred Jack as he fought to keep a straight face at her protestations. “I was only a few years older than you are now when I joined Jem at the Sanatorium. It was a wonderful opportunity for a chap my age and I couldn’t believe my luck. He trusted me and he gave me responsibility for the San whenever he was unavailable …”
“But what’s that got to do with me?” interrupted Jo with some frustration.

“Oh Joey! Who do you think Jem left in charge when he had to hare down to the Chalet to assist Madge because you were off creating alarms and excursions?”
“But …. but …” For once in her life, Joey was rendered speechless.
“I looked after the San whilst Jem was comforting Madge because you were tracking Elisaveta after she’d been kidnapped by Cosimo. I looked after the San whilst Jem was searching for you & Grizel after that madman ran off with Robin, and again when he captured Corney Flower.  Who do you think looked after the San when Jem was at your bedside praying that your fever could be broken after you’d fallen through the ice saving that Irish girl? And that was difficult Joey, for I was already attached to you then and if we’d lost you I would have felt that I’d lost a sister …” Jack faltered.
Jo’s eyes were deep pools of sympathy.  Placing a free hand on his knee, she was rewarded with a smile.
“I’m sorry, Jack”, she said in an undertone. “I was heedless and ignorant then. I would certainly never have realised how far reaching my actions were in terms of affecting others.”
“No matter, Jo”, Jack had recovered himself.  “That’s all water in the bridge. “We’re both here together now and that’s all that matters. Your influence over my career has been unwitting, I know that … I was just pulling your leg, but I am grateful that it gave me the opportunity to prove myself to Jem.”

“So when did you stop viewing me as a sister?” Joey pressed.
“I think it must have been about the time you became Head Girl” said Jack as he though back to the terms during which Jo had proved to be an extremely competent leader of the school, perhaps the best Head Girl the school had ever known. “You remember that we met the Hillises when I was escorting a gang of you up to the Sonnalpe?”
Jo nodded. “Of course, you and Frank Hillis were old pals from way back.”
“That’s right, well I seem to recall it was a particularly fun morning. Being with you, laughing, joking and everyone so relaxed. I think perhaps that’s when it dawned on me that you were no longer a schoolgirl, in fact, compared to the others you were becoming a young woman. Although, of course, you fought it every step of the way!” Jack grinned mischievously.
“Don’t I know it!” Joey groaned at the recollection. She had spent that holiday like a bear with a sore head, frustrated and resentful at the prospect of becoming Head Girl the following term. Only an evening with Gisela Mensch and her new-born baby had brought her to her senses and ensured that she gave of the School her best.

Jack took pity on her. “It was when Jem and I came to visit you all at Guide Camp that I knew for sure” he reminisced.
“But you weren’t there for long!” countered Jo.
“Long enough”, replied Jack meaningfully. “One conversation vividly springs to mind. You were declaring that it was just as well Carty couldn’t ask you to be godmother because you’d have had to come over all prim and proper … I watched you holding forth and I just knew. ‘I’m going to marry that girl’, I thought and I even said to you, “You’ll have to grow up one day’ though I don’t suppose you’ll remember that now?”
Jo had been looking distant as she thought of those heady summer days when the world had been innocent and the worst that could happen was being set upon by a swarm of hornets.
“I do remember, now that you mention it, although I’ve never thought of it since. And you had a curious look about you but I didn’t stop to consider why …”
“No, you were too busy telling me that you were always going to wear your hair down!”
“In two tails ‘til I’m twenty, like Jo March from Little Women” corrected Joey softly. She smiled to herself at the irony. Just as her fictional namesake had resented growing up but eventually found her Professor, so Joey, too had found her Doctor.

“After that, I delighted in being able to spend any time with you. In the holidays, when you were up here at Die Rosen, accompanying you to and from the Sonnalpe, watching you compete in rowing tournaments, coming down to the Christmas Play or Summer Pageant … I knew it was too early and I didn’t want to push you so I waited … content to admire you from afar, milady!” Jack pretended to doff an imaginary cap.
“Indeed, I am impressed by your patience and persistence, sir” Joey might have been replying to her knight and as she proffered a hand for the knight to kiss, the pair chuckled companionably.
“Does Jem know?” she asked inquisitively as Jack returned her hand.
“I don’t think so. He may have guessed but we’ve certainly never spoken of it.” Jack Maynard was a very private man in whom still waters ran deep. Generally, he kept his feelings to himself and would have withdrawn from any such discussion. Much as he liked and respected Jem Russell, he believed strongly that such personal matters should remain exclusive to the two parties involved. “I’ve never spoken of it to anyone, Joey-girl, until now …”

“But what about that awful ass, Dr Hunter?” demanded Jo. “If you felt that way about me then, didn’t you want to intervene or at least say something then?”
“Of course, I did, Joey, but like I said at the time, you never asked me to and I didn’t know whether you were welcoming his advances. It wasn’t until you told me what an arrogant braggart he was that I even knew how you felt about him.” Jack smiled.” But it gave me hope and when you said that you wished I was going with you to India and that you would write to me occasionally, a travelogue you called it, I felt sure that the time would be right one day …but not then, not when you were leaving for so long …”
Jo returned the smile as she recalled her impulsive comment that had lightened Jack’s heart after six months of concern that Dr Hunter might be wheedling his way into Jo’s affections. Jack would never mention it to Jo but their farewell had triggered a need to react. His resulting discussion with the intrusive Dr Hunter had ensured that young man found himself another post as far away from the Sonnalpe as possible, in Australia no less!

“And what about you, Joey? Was it really today?” Jack enquired gently. “I’ve been waiting for the right moment since you got back from India. I couldn’t bear to watch your distress when we thought we’d lost Robin and Hilary …”
Joey pondered. “It became crystal clear today, certainly. I was at my wits’ end, worried about Robin and my imagination running riot and you were there for me … you seemed to take everything in your stride and made me believe that everything would be all right. You gave me strength when I most needed it …”
“And did you have any inclination before then?” It was Jack’s turn to push for information.
“Perhaps … I don’t know …. I’d come to think of you as a brother so it’s difficult to put my finger on when that changed. You know what I’ve always been like – the archetypal maiden aunt, insisting that I would never marry! And yet, I missed you when you weren’t around. When Madge held that surprise party for me before I left for India, you were the first person I looked for and I was disappointed that you couldn’t make it. I put that down to our friendship but beneath it all, there must have been something deeper … and then when you gave me that photograph of Rufus, I was so moved by your thought and care ...”
Jo flushed as she remembered how eagerly the doctor had pressed his farewell gift into her hands.
“… But it was today, Jack …” Jo looked deep into the blue eyes above hers,  “… today that I realised that I love you … totally and unconditionally …”

Jack  had heard everything that he needed to hear. Rising, he turned and reached out his hands towards Joey, pulling her to her feet.
“Joey,” he began earnestly, “For the past two years I’ve loved you from a distance, waiting and wondering when would be the right time to show you how I feel. Telling me that you return that love, unconditionally, has made me the happiest man in the world …”, he stopped to brush a kiss against her forehead, “But there’s one more thing that you could do to ensure that never changes …”
“Name it!” Joey returned his gaze steadfastly, feeling inexplicably reckless and quite prepared to promise anything.
Slowly, but deliberately, Jack dropped to one knee and took both Jo’s slender hands in his own.
“Josephine Mary Bettany,” he began and Joey felt suddenly weak as her heart beat faster and her stomach flipped. “I love you … completely and unreservedly. I intend to love you for the rest of my life. I want to be able to walk with you at my side and I want the right to care for you and to protect you. I want to bring children into this world with you and I want to grow old with you. Joey, would you …” Jack swallowed as his mouth became unaccountably dry, “Would you do me the greatest honour of becoming my wife?”

There was a moment’s silence as Jo savoured his proposal, committing every facet of his tone and words to memory. Her flushed cheeks belied their usual pallor and as she stood before the man she loved, she looked positively radiant with joy. Those black eyes, soft as the darkest pansies, glistened with unshed tears as she replied.
“Oh, Jack …”, but her voice broke even as she uttered his name. What she had intended to say was left unspoken as she swallowed and a solitary tear escaped to trickle unhurriedly down her face. Tugging at Jack’s hands, she managed to convey that he should stand. He rose, his eyes still locked on hers and  with one hand, lightly cupped her face whilst he swept away the tear with his thumb.
Overwhelmed by the sentiments churning within her, Joey spontaneously flung her arms around Jack’s neck, nestling her head beneath his chin.
“I take it that’s a ‘Yes’, my darling”, murmured Jack as he held her tightly around the waist and inhaled the sweet scent of her hair.

Jo raised her head, offering up her delicate mouth for a kiss in acknowledgement. Jack responded in kind, wrapping his arms around her in a bear hug. He wondered at his good fortune and gave up a silent vow of thanks that his prayers had been answered.  Joey Bettany had accepted his hand in marriage and her slender figure was now pressed against his as if they had always meant to be together. Whatever the future might bring, and his countenance darkened slightly as he thought of the current political situation, he was determined to look after this woman through thick and thin.  Joey, too, was counting her blessings. Jack Maynard was rapidly proving to be her rock. She felt that in him she had found a man who was solid, reliable and trustworthy, but also something much more than that, her soul mate. Leaning into him she felt that they complemented each other perfectly.

So they stood together for some minutes, each revelling in a dream fulfilled. Jack lightly ran his fingers up and down Jo’s back, then dropped his hands to her waist, gently tracing her curves. Joey caught her breath with pleasure at the sensations this stirred. Was this then the bliss that married couples enjoyed? Being as one and the other’s touch awakening every fibre of your being? Now she began to comprehend the simple delight and contentment which she could see her friends enjoy in their own marriages. Breaking free from their kiss, Joey drew back her head in order to view her future husband. Jack Maynard could never be described as handsome but he had a clear cut face which spoke of great character. A big, fair young man, with keen blue eyes, he prompted people to look twice and Jo felt that she had never laid eyes on such an attractive chap.
“Do you like what you see, my girl?” Jack read her mind.
Caressing his face, Jo’s reply was quite plain. “How could I not? I love you, Jack Maynard.”

As their conversation turned to more practical matters, Jack seemed suddenly anxious.
“It would have to be a Catholic wedding, sweetheart. Would that be a problem?”
“Of course not”, Jo was firm. “Madge has always encouraged me to attend either service and since living here in the Tyrol I’ve become more and more drawn to the Catholic faith. I won’t make any hasty decisions but I have thought about converting and if …” Joey paused, flustered as she corrected herself, “… when we have children, I think it’s important that we raise them under one faith, at least until they’re old enough to make up their own minds.”
Jack squeezed her gently to indicate his understanding and appreciation.

“Oh! My one and only Aunt Sempronia!” Jo suddenly exclaimed.
“What is it?” Jack was used to the workings of Joey’s grasshopper mind but could only guess at what tangent she may have leapt to on this occasion.
“Our children! Don’t you see? If you’re fair and I’m dark, there’s a good chance they might be ginger!” Jo spoke in such portentous tones of doom that Jack threw back his head and guffawed.
“Oh Joey!”, he shook his head at her. “We’ll love them regardless of their hair colour!”
“But what will Jem say?” Jo was conscience-stricken as she remembered the glee with which she had proclaimed her small niece, Sybil’s titian curls as ginger.
“If we produce redheads,” returned Jack dryly, “Then I expect Jem will roar with laughter and who can blame him?!”
And with that, Joey had to be content.

“Just think”, she mused a little later, “I’m the last of the Quartette to find love. Marie is happily married to Eugen, Frieda and Bruno von Ahlen will soon be betrothed …”
“I can vouch for that” grinned Jack who had some insight into the esteem in which another of the young doctors held gentle, quiet Frieda. “But what about Simone?”
“She’s been writing about a certain young captain in the army, an Andre de Bersac” replied Jo. “And reading between the lines, he would like nothing better than to claim her as his bride …” She stopped to blush furiously as she realised that she too would soon be a bride.
“Who will you have as bridesmaids?”  Jack had guessed the direction of her train of thought.
“Rob, of course,” Jo replied without a moment’s hesitation, “And I’ll ask Grizel to pair off with Frieda, after all, she’s my oldest friend ….. Jack, about Robin …” but she was interrupted.
“Robin is welcome to make her home with us for as long as she needs to … that goes without saying, Joey.”
“Thank you, Jack. I … I just couldn’t bear to be parted from her, not after today …” Jo was still very emotional after the traumatic end to their picnic.

Glancing at the white face and the shadows under Jo’s eyes, Jack swiftly changed the subject.
“It’s getting late Joey, and Madge will have ordered supper for us. I vote we seek out her and Jem to break the news, and Rob, if she’s awake … then tomorrow we’ll send telegrams to India, New Zealand and England before I treat you to lunch.” Jack caught hold of her left hand, running his thumb over the bare third finger,  “Then I’d like to take you shopping to find a ring? What do you think?”
“Perfect!” agreed Joey shyly with brightening eyes. “Although I hope you’re prepared to be patient because I’ve no idea what to choose.”
“You shall have what you want, my love, but if you want my opinion”, here Jack cleared his throat somewhat hesitantly, “You would suit emerald – it’s your favourite colour and it flatters your complexion.”
Joey was overwhelmed. He had clearly considered this carefully and she was taken aback by his knowledge and conviction.
“An emerald sounds beautiful, Jack, but if you don’t mind, I’d rather not wear it until after Juliet’s wedding. It’s only a couple of weeks and I don’t want to steal her thunder.”
“Of course”, Jack was relaxed, secure that having waited so long, a week or two would make no material difference. “Then, how about we go to the School for Kaffee and Kuchen and give them all a shock?”
“Jack! Can you imagine the looks on Hilda and Nell’s faces when I introduce you as ‘my fiance’, I expect they’ll shriek!” Jo felt on safer territory predicting the reactions of her friends rather than contemplating the purchase of an expensive jewel.
“My fiancee”, said Jack softly, trying it out for the first time. “Josephine Mary Maynard … Frau Doktor Maynard … how do they sound to you?”
“Absolutely golloptious!” quoth the irrepressible Jo as she opened the door of the salon and ushered Jack out into the corridor. His arm around her waist, they made their way through the house, intent on sharing their glad tidings with Madge and Jem.

Everyone - I had the privilege of reading this early so I'll repeat here what I've already told Rachael - This is beautiful, it captures perfectly both Jack and Joey's characters including Joey's almost mecurial changes in direction. I truely believe this is the scene that EBD would have liked to have written. Thank you.

(Oh BTW I had to lie to a patient at work and tell them my contact lenses were causing the tears running down my cheeks - not a good idea reading this when halfway through a clinic!)

Completely faithful to the original, but giving Jack a proper voice (I always suspected he was more eloquent than EBD allowed him to be - otherwise what could Jo have seen in him?) AND not making him seem like a cradle snatcher for having loved Jo for so long - what a fantastic job!

*waiting happily for the wedding scene*

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh happy contented sigh, Jack and Joey back where they were before I discovered the drabbles. Thank you, now I won't mind as much having to miss a few days.

Rachael I know it's all been said dozens of times, but I've just read it and it really is beautiful! The characters are so well drawn and this is tender, beautiful and convincing. I've never been brought so close to tears by something on the board (honest injun!) Thank you!  :D
