Title: The End of an Era (Joey & Jack seperate)
Post by Ally on Jul 7th, 2003, 11:51am
With the Con thread ending, it seemed that their were a few ideas raised that should/could be developed.  One of these is Joey and Jack seperating.  Apologies to some if you don't agree, but I hope there is something here.

Joey stood stock still, numb, hardly able to take in what Jack was saying.  In fact she had not really heard anything since those fateful words, 'I don't love you anymore'.  He was trying to explain, but what did it matter, there would be no Jack in her life anymore.

But there was anger too, building inside of her.  The betrayal, an affair with another woman, a friend, a good friend, who he now professed to love and was having his child.  And she hadn't even begun to think about her children...

The anger boiled up inside her until she could take it no longer, she burst into a violent rage;'How you could you, you are leaving me! the cheek of it, you leaving me! I should leave you!' Jopey cried before flinging herself at her unfaithful husband.
'Yes my Jo, i'm leaving you, i don't love you anymore, i love Grizel, she dosn't want loads of brats either.'

Jo flung herself at Jack enraged beyond anything she had ever experienced before. "How could you? How COULD you?" she screamed at him, over and over again.

Jack looked at Jo, the love of his youth, and quiet tears rolled down his face. "Jo, I loved you so much, but now..."

Without giving him a chance to compete his sentence Jo shouted "And what about our children? Ho0w could you do this to them?"

Jack lowered his head into his hands and began to mumble "But that's what has always been most important to you Jo. All the children's needs come first. Their wants are your primary concern. Their wishes are what are always taken into account. What about me Jo? I have needs. I have wants. What about my wishes?" He looked up, tears still roling down his face. "Do you know how you have made me feel all these years JO? Shall I tell you?" Jo shook her head angrily, but he continued anyway. "For years I have been a sperm bank. Oh, don't look so bloody shocked! So we wanted a family, fine! Bless 'em all! But Jo, for the past few years you've gone on and on about quads - at first I thought you were joking, then I hoped you were joking, but recently it has become a mania with you.

Jo looked wildly round trying to think of something to say to refute these allegations, but sickeningly, she couldn't. "Well, you know we always said we wanted a big family" she began defensively.

(Feel free to continue this sedate argument  :D  )

After a pause, where she faultered, considering his argument, he was right she conceded to a certain point but it wasn't up to her to be a mindreader.
'Oh thats so typical of you MEN! always think youshould be put first! Of course i have to put my children first, why they are my flesh and blood, i'd gladly DIE for them, but not you Jack...not you.' cried Jo, her voice dropping as she realised, she didn't love Jack either, not like she did when they were young but as  father of her children. She looked up at his confused and tear streaked face and realised, she didn't want to b with him either.

But how would they tell the children and how would they cope with this.  Joey knew now her feelings on the matter and was glad of her revelation, even if it did leave her with a gnawing sadness inside, thinking of the times they had had together.

But most of the children were still young, and Len and Con had nearly finished University, what would they think had been happening to their family, whilst they had been away.

Turning to her husband she said, 'Jack, whatever the bad feelings we are enduring now, we have to tell the children together, and be brave and strong for them, they must not be made to feel responsible for this, whatever the truth is.'

Jack nodded in agreement, 'Jo, i'll leave today, we'll get the children back here, all together to let them know.' Jack sai efficiently with a relieved look that made Joey squirm. She nodded grimly, turned and left the room.

From the salon, Jack could hear her telephoning the school.  "That you, Rosalie?  Ask Hilda if she can send our five home at the end of lessons today, will you?  Jack and I need to have a bit of a chinwag with them.  No; not Ruey.  This is a Maynard family discussion."  From her telephone voice, Jack thought, you'd never guess that he had just shattered her world as if with a sledgehammer.

Jo stalked back into the room.  "That's the girls taken care of; they'll be home later today.  How do you propose to summon your male offspring?  As far as I know, we're not on particularly affectionate terms with the Headmaster there and besides, even if they set off this afternoon, they wouldn't be here until tomorrow night at the earliest."

Jack looked into her face, which was white and strained, and felt a stab of pity.  His whole life had been built around comforting and protecting her for so long -- could he really go through with the separation he honestly felt was in both of their best interests? And for that matter, could he be sure that it was really in both of their interests, when all he really sought was the freedom to enjoy the pleasure of Grizel's youthful, athletic body, unscarred by motherhood?  Resolutely, he quelled these pricklings of conscience and replied calmly, "I think We had better assemble the girls and tell them tonight.  Then you and I -- or just I, if you prefer -- will fly to England tomorrow and abstract the boys from school for an afternoon so we can tell them all together."

(Oh, oops; I was thinking that the Triplets were still at school.  If desired, amend the above to "our two" [Cecil and Felicity] and assume that the Triplets will be gathered together with the boys in Blighty for the later conference!)

*It doesn't really matter how old the triplets are, but I was making them older so that we had a wider spread of ages, therefore creating a wider spread of reactions*

'Right replied Joey,' calmly and with a dignified air. 'I ill gather the girls, you book us some flightsand we will get to England the day fter tomorrow,we can tell the kids then, i are say they will have some things to say' said Jo.
'Yes, your right, and with that Jack and JO wen their separate ways.'

Having decided to tell their eldest children first so they might help to soften the blow for the youngest, both Joey and Jack became uneasy at the prospect before them.

Joey sadly looked at the event as the last thing that ahe would ever do with her husband, whilst Jack was worried about the reception he would get from the news of his affair with Rosalie (decided she was a better idea than Grizel, as she wouls be a friend and really supportive companion, and make Jack happy).

Finally the day arrived, and both Joey and Jack reflected that it was sad that their far flung family had been brought together for such an occasion.

After all the hug and introductions had been done Len turned to her parents with a smile and jokeingly teased them, '
Well you have got us all together so what's the big occasion, do'nt tell me your expecting those quads you have always threatened'

The look she got from both her parents made her stop swiftly and ask 'What on earth's happened, no one's di.. died have they' she broke off

'No honey nothing like that's happened, but, well, I think your father should tell you, as its his fault' shot out Joey with a glare at her husband.

Jack faltered knowing now was the time, he took a deep breath and hoped that his children would understand, and then he spoke...

"Sit down, all of you." The Maynard girls obeyed implicitly. There was a look on Jack's face that they had not seen before, and told them this was serious. "I'm sorry girls, but your mother and I are splitting up. Wait!" he said, holding up his hand, "hear me out first. I'm sorry that it has come to this, but as your mother says, this is my doing. I've felt trapped in this marriage for a long time, but have recently grown closer to someone else. I'm sorry girls, but I can no longer live a lie. It doesn't make a difference to how I feel about you all, I love you, and you will always be welcome in my new home."
Stunned silence greeted this news. Inwardly, the triplets felt they would have preferred a death to have been the reason for their summons home. Margot was the first to recover. "And who - who will you be living with Papa? Is it someone we've met?"
Jack gulped, wondering how they would take this. "It is someone you know. Rosalie."
"AUNT Rosalie?" the triplets excleaimed in one voice.

"Yes", replied their father, a little tentatively as he awaited their reactions which when they came, reflected their different characters.
Len tossed her mane of chestnut curls and strode across to the window, her violet grey eyes veiled by a film of tears which she did not wish anyone to see. Their idyllic family life was over - what would become of them all? And how would her younger sisters and brothers take this devastating news?
Con dropped into the nearest armchair, reaching for the clean hankie that she had only just retrieved from her dormy that morning, before everything had so dramatically changed and collapsed around them .
Margot, with her fiery red-gold hair, responded in typical tempestuous fashion. Tearing across the room she pummelled her fists against Jack's chest, speechless in her anger.

'Er, yes.' replied Jack, thinking he must have been very bad in a past life to deserve so many highly strung women in his care.
'Oh papa you simply can't! Think what the pope would say!' exclaimed Margot, his most religious triplet.
'I dare say the pope has greater worries!' said Len in raised tones, defending her father,'Papa, i have sensed something like this, i do not mind a break in tradition, aslong ans you, and mamma, are happy!' stated the sensitive, mature young women that was Len.
'Thankyou Helena, you are such a comfort to me.' Jack said hugging his daughter in releif, 'And you Con?'

Con turned her dark eyes on to her father.

'Actually I'm not that surprised' she replied

The others in the room turned astonished looks on Con, normally she was so dreamy she missed a lot of what was going on, but the tone in her voice this time was clear and certain.

'What do you me, Con' both Len and her mother asked at the same time.

'Just that, I'm not surprised, well I am a bit, I'm certainly a little bit taken a back by Papa's relationship with Auntie Rosalie, but not by the fact you are seperating.  You see I sensed something was wrong last time I was home from University for hols, and I heard you arguing once as well.  I didn't think it was serious enough for you to split, but know you have told us, well, I'm not surprised.

'But' said Len, 'Why didn't you say anything to us?'

'Just because of what I've just said, I didn't read anything into it then' replied her sister.  'As for Aunt Rosalie, I'm not sure what I think about that yet, that is a bit too new, but I do want you both to be happy' with this Con subsided and Margot let her feelings be known.

Well it was in the Con thread (as well as Miss Annersley - well he kissed her!) but I didn't make it clear in this thread who it was, but someone else used Grizel (not that I mind as it had been my intention) but last night I suddenly decided that Rosalie would work a lot better, so I changed it.  ;)

Margot, whilst being clever and religious was by no means the most sensitive of all the triplets, she believed strongly in the teachings of the Church but she didn't have the wisdom of years that would teach her marriage was not so simple.
'Mamma, Pappa, you cannot separate, what will i tell Mother superior? I cannot tell her that myfather is an adulterer and that my mother is willing to break the sacrament of marriage!' cried an indignant and mildly hysterical Margot.
'Oh Margot, disown us then!' was her mothers reply, creating a final unity with her husband.

Title: Re: The End of an Era (Joey & Jack seperate)
Post by Ciorstaidh on Jul 16th, 2003, 5:52pm
"Besides," said Len, in a quiet, controlled voice, "it's not as if it's for your Mother Superior to judge. As long as Mother and Father are happy - it's their marriage and their lives. And they haven't even said they're going to divorce, just separate." She looked up at Jack for confirmation that this decision had not been made.

He nodded. "Len's quite right, Margot. Your Mother and I are not happy together - and surely the thing you want for us most is happiness? We have not been able to decide whether or not to divorce. I think - I think we need some time apart and to search our own consciences before we can discuss that."

"But the Holy Bible --"

"Never mind what that says right now!" Margot was shocked and began another argument, but Jack stopped her dead. "Margot, we need time to search our own consciences and consider our own views on what the Word says - that means not another word from any of you on the moralsor otherwise of our decision. You are part of the family; naturally the decision affects you. But at the end of the day it is OUR decision."

Margot looked sulky, but knew that her father was right.

When she got her sisters alone, however, she let fly her feelings. "However can you support them? You KNOW what it says - marriage is HOLY! Len, think of you and Reg - that's going to be FOREVER if you marry him! Not some fling where you can drop him when you get bored!"

"Oh, what do you know, Margot, it's not as if you've ever been in love, known what it's like to stop loving someone but feel trapped! Neither have I; that's why I'm keeping schtum about this." Thus Con checked her sister's diatribe, adding, "and we must all be careful not to judge. You can think the thing they do is wrong, but don't judge them. Remember the Teacher? "Judge not, lest ye be judged." "

Margot could still not get the embarrassment, the humiliation, out of her head. "If they do go ahead and divorce, that's against the teachings of the Bible. I won't stand by and see that happen. If they do divorce, I can't face the Abbess - whatever would she say? Why, I'll - I'll leave my Order and join the Poor Clares - I need to understand why they would do such a thing!"

Len and Con looked sober, remembering Luigia di Fererra, one of their mother's contemporaries (or nearly so), who had perished under the wicked Nazi regime. They remembered joey telling them of the time Bianca had told the then-Prefects (including Joey herself) of Luigia's decision. If Margot joined the Poor Clares, they would never see her again.

'Oh Margot, 'Began Len in gentle tones, 'I beg of you, WE beg of you, please do not do such a thing for we shall never see you again.'
A nasty grin spread across Margots face, 'ah, yes,but it is my desicion!' said Magot before turning on her heel, nose in the air, she left the room, leaving the more mature members of her family to dispair.

"Len", said Con hesitantly, "I think it's time to call upon Emerence".

The eldest Maynard cast a horrified look at her middle triplet, who continued determinedly nonetheless. "Yes, I know we always agreed it was better for Margot to enter a convent than to live a life of sin with another woman.  But frankly, Len, our world is coming down around our shoulders anyway.  This is the '60s, for heaven's sake.  We can't let Margot join such a draconian order as the Poor Clare's.  If Mamma and Pappa can divorce, I say Margot can go out with Emmy.  Surely you agree?"  She looked pleadingly at her elder sister.

The first and second triplets agreed and Len said, 'Alright Con, i'll ring her, Margot has her number, i'm sure good old Emmie will talk her out of it!' And so she did, this was how the conversation panned out,
'Hallo, is Miss Emerence Hope there please?' asked Len cooly
'Oh yes, who shall i say is calling?' asked the male voice on the end of the phone.'
'Um...Just say and old friend.' replied Len.
'Right, an old friend.' replied the man, he couldbe heard calling Emerence.
'Em, Emmie, Emerence!' he cried.
'What is it honey?' shouted a women.
'Some posh girl, long distance, say's she's an old friend. Emerence laughed at this, 'Oh dear, my past is catching up with me!' said Emerence, taking the receiver from her boyfriend.
'Who is this?' she asked, clearly puzzeld.
'Its Len, Helena Maynard, im Margots sister! Remember?'
'Yeah, i remember, what do you want?' asked Emerence rudley.
'Its Margot...'

The poor clares was a very secluded order of nuns, they had little or no contact with reall life.

Thats all i know!

The Poor Clares are a "contemplative" order. That means they spend their time segregated from the world, praying for it - the thinking goes that they can focus more on God if they are not in contact. Once they take their vows, technically they never see someone from the outside world. Of course, there are exceptions e.g. if there are medical problems, but these are restricted as far as possible.

That's as much as I know!

'Margot...'began Emerence grimly, 'I lost contact with her when she ran off to join the ranks of the holy army!'
If Len was shocked by this rejection of faith she didn't let it show in her voice which she kept calm and steady, 'We have had a family crisis,i'll be frank, Mamma and Papa have split up, Margot dosn't approve and wants o join the poor clares!'
The women on the end of the phone let out a low wistle, 'I'll say she dosn't...I suppose you want my help.' siad Emerence.
'Yes...Yes we do, can you write to her?' pleaded len.
'Get her on the line Len, thats my only offer, i'll talk some sense into the silly madam but i aint writing no letters!'
'Alright Emmerence, give me a minute!' said Len, who ran off for Margot, racking her brains for a way to get her stubborn sister to the phone.

In the end, all Len needed to say was "Phone Margot" and Margot didn't even bother to ask who it was actually on the line. Nor did she ask who had made the call, so it all proved to be relatively simple after all.

Margot lifted the receiver from the hall table where Len had left it. "Yes?" she said, and when she heard Emerence's voice, she let out a small shriek of delight. "Emmy! It's been so long! How are you?" she said delightedly.

'yes, i'm fine Margot but i here we can't say the same for you!' declared Emmy, thouroughly disgruntled at being dragged to the phone.
'Oh i'm alright Emmy, my big sister dosn't want me to join the poor clares, but i must, i cannot live with a family who thinks divorce alright!'
'Tell it like it is then! Don't be such a goop Margot Maynard, your parents can divorce if they see fit and their spoilt daughter isn't likley to stop them. Your lucky Margot you have a family that cares about you, it will be your loss if you walk away from all that!' said Emmy setting her old friend straight.
'Well-I, ummm. well, i say...' gasped Margot

"You've been lucky! My parents didn't care, oh they're still together but they're useless, the only good they ever did was to send me to school. Your parents have done alot for you and deserve their happiness, if that means that they have to split up to keep that happiness, well though it's sad that it has to happen, well it's better for them!"

Thus bracing treatment rendered Margot apparently uncapable of speech and she stood gaping into the phone like a stranded gold fish. Fortunatley Len saw her younger sister in distress and ran over to lend her a hand, she took the phone, said good by to Emerence and lead Margot to an easy chair,
'Oh Len, i've made a terrible mistake, bring Mama and Papa, tell them i'm sorry, i never meant to hurt them, emmy's right, i'm a terrible person!' declared Margot, and then promtly fainted.

(i'm thinking brain fever or something, you know...)
