A hotel in Interlaken had been reserved for the Chalet School Annual Board Meeting, and the hotelier rubbed his hands with glee as he put up the ‘Rooms Full’ sign. What had astonished him was the number of women who arrived, and the high number of foreigners. It seemed that the school was on the other side of the world, and yet they travelled all this way for the meeting. Still, he wasn’t going to complain and ordered the maids to take jugs of iced water and glasses into the Board Room before leaving the group alone.
Sadly for their efforts, the water was completely ignored as everyone got down to business. “Thank you all for coming on such short notice,” Hilda began, looking around at the staff and Prefects of the Chalet School as well as all the members of the Board and many CBBers from the UK and even further afield. “We sent you all an email outlining the current problem, and I know many of you have read the messages that Elinor has posted to the board. It is unfortunate that we find ourselves having to face Elinor again, but we have no intention of hiding from it.”
“Spineless jellyfish,” a voice murmured. In the silence, it echoed loudly and there was muffled laughter from around the room as Lisa_T’s face went scarlet and she studied the floor.
“Yes, exactly,” Nell agreed. “We are going to have to face Elinor at some point – and depending when she gets out, it could be sooner rather than later. We will all need as much courage as possible to get through it.”
Hilda nodded at her co-Head’s comments before turning to the others. “We have no idea with what Elinor will attempt to attack us. We must be prepared for anything.”
There was a murmur around the room and the tension increased almost visibly.

The silence caused by Hilda’s comments continued for some moments, before it was finally broken.
“May I ask something?”
Vikki’s comment echoed around the room, causing some people to start, but Hilda, who had been watching the assembly, only nodded and reflected that it was nice not to have to correct someone’s grammar for a change.
“Certainly,” she acquiesced.
“This is a rather silly question,” Vikki admitted with a slight blush, “but I’d like to confirm that the last story, where Ellie took over Lesley to come to the gathering, was actually a piece of fiction. I only ask,” she went on, dignity swelling her tones as Rachael and Lesley exchanged glances and giggled, “because I’m wondering if Ellie could actually hurt us out in the Real World.”
“Are you suggesting,” KB, who could now follow even the most bizarre of Vikki’s thoughts, jumped in, “that perhaps she wrote the story in the hopes that it would give her those powers, just as Lesley wrote her piece so that its publication would release Hilda?”
Vikki managed to prevent herself from falling on KB’s neck and sobbing at the relief of having someone who understood her, and merely nodded in reply. “Maybe,” she continued slowly, “her only power over us will be the fear those who spent time under her control have, and the hatred that the rest of us feel for her.”

Ooh, this is rather good - I like the twists it's taking - hope it's not my fault that she is back!!  :-/

BTW - as I haven't been anywhere near the Board since Xmas Eve, I wish you'd all realise it's not me!! Not my style punctuation-wise etc ......

Had hoped there's be loads more by now as well - when it was me, I was posting much more frequently!!

As for the password - I asked for Elinor to be deleted - presumably that was done and resurrected by "the author" with a new password - for all I know the TEM actually got my Elinor which now leaves the field WIDE open .....!

Come on, Ellie - lets have some more!!

“Mabel Bubb,” Elinor remarked as she finally came face to face with the woman, having found her in the gloom. “It’s been a long time.”
The former Head of the Chalet School faced the woman who had been responsible for her creation and nodded. “Yes, it has,” she agreed. “But you couldn’t possibly be left to handle this on your own.”
“You want revenge,” Elinor said, knowing this woman’s thought processes intimately, as they matched her own. “And you shall have it. We shall both have it.”
“Good,” Mabel purred. “But do remind me, Elinor,” she went on, and there was a note of warning in her voice, “why did I lose my power?”
“A moment of weakness,” Elinor admitted. “Folly on my part. The ideas you had – the ones I gave you – would have been far more successful than those of Hilda Annersley, but my long acquaintance with her meant that she was able to persuade me to allow her return. I had hoped that your return might have had more of an impact, but Hilda was too secure in her power by then and nothing came of it.”
“But this time?” Mabel prompted as they re-entered the shadowy building.
“This time,” Elinor agreed, “your views shall have sway. The school has restarted in Australia. Once we have defeated the paltry army that is no doubt being massed against us, we shall start everything anew and run it as we choose.”
Mabel chuckled. “You seem to have very little control over your charac-“ She stopped short, the colour fading rapidly from her face, and her hands clenched into fists as pain welled up inside her and the agony on her chest made breathing almost impossible.
Elinor chuckled softly. “Perhaps not,” she remarked as she walked away down the corridor. “Perhaps I have more control than you thought…”

Well, smelly Ellie jelly belly, that is an interesting turn to take, but we are all wise to Miss Bubb, so I think we will be able to overcome such an odd person, and I somehow don't think she would be able to adjust to modern life very well at all. Is she really the best you have?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ??

*giggles* Now I'm really convinced it's KB, given the er, intimate knowledge of the inner workings of Viikki's mind thus displayed. Then again, Rachael strenuously denied any involvement last time, so I'm not believing her this time.

Rachael, if you asked for Elinor to be deleted, have you tried logging on as her? That would show if it's the same password!

The group began to amass at the site of the school early, before the fog had fully cleared. The air was crisp, but a number of the girls shivered and swung their arms to try and get warm. Others set up the speakers that would provide the noise that would hopefully knock Elinor out again. It wasn’t a foolproof plan, of course – in fact, most people thought, but hadn’t said, that it was the most stupid thing they’d ever heard! However, it had been the only thing anyone had come up with.
KB drew the CBB members around her. “So let’s go through this again,” she directed. “As soon as there is any change, the music goes on, and the moment Elinor appears, we have to leap on her.”
“Er, I have a question,” Caz ventured. As one of the newest member of the list, she was rather shy about asking it, but felt it was too important to ignore. “If I understood it from the story Lesley wrote, people had to be pulled across the divide. So how are we going to persuade Elinor to come over?”
“Matey didn’t get pulled across,” Lesley reminded her sharply, which wasn’t her usual manner, but she was tense, and in addition didn’t like being reminded that she had been the first to bring Elinor’s actions to everyone else’s attention. “She went of her own accord.”
KB cast a warning glance at Lesley, who understood the reprimand and flushed. Just because she was angry, she had no right to take her fear and frustration out on others. Rachael gave Lesley’s hand a squeeze and that woman felt better, while the group continued to go through the plan. It was fortunate that so many people had come, for it would take all of them to throw a ring around the entire ground that both Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson had felt needed to be covered.

The members of the Chalet School, meanwhile, excluding those who were also members of the CBB, were not far away.
“Here we go,” Kathie Ferrars groaned. “I hate this!”
“Who doesn’t?” Nancy Wilmot retorted. “Sometimes I wish things were still the way they always had been!”
”We have lost nothing,” Nell reminded them, “and gained a whole new world. Would you really want to lose that again and return to Elinor’s control?”
“No,” Nancy admitted slowly, “but you must admit, Nell, that it would sometimes be easier…”
“But far less pleasant,” Hilda snapped, and that reaction immediately silenced Kathie and Nancy. They so rarely heard Hilda angry that it always affected them deeply when she became so. “Now,” Hilda said after a moment’s pause, and her voice was as usual, “our actions are, at least at first, to act as support for the CBBers. We have no way of knowing what powers EBD will have, and although I don’t like it any more than the rest of you…”
“Don’t like what, Hilda, my dear,” a horrifyingly familiar voice asked from close beside them. “That I’m still in control?”

Elinor’s voice had carried to the far group of CBB members, who turned, more than one with a shriek of fear. However, it was not just one person who they found standing slightly above them on the gentle slope that had led down to the site at which the school had been located.
“Miss Bubb!”
The name was murmured around the staff who had known her, and many of the CBBers were able to take a guess at her identity as she looked almost identical to the image of her that had appeared on the dust-wrapper for the hardback copy of “Gay From China”.
“Oh, no,” Lesley suddenly gasped, having turned her attention to the other figure. “Matey! What’s she doing here?!”
“At a guess, EBD wanted some help,” Rachael suggested, sotte voce, and they both shuddered.
“Perhaps we should congratulate you,” Nell remarked rather snidely, and only Hilda could make a guess at her true feelings, “on getting across without the obvious insanity that affected Matey.”
“I always believed you were a good actress,” Elinor remarked to Gwynneth Lloyd, who smirked.
A number of the CBBers sidled over to where the Chalet School staff and prefects were standing, and the other members of the CBB, realising that they were being left behind, hurried to join with them.
Elinor’s eyes swept over the group and many people, particularly those who had been so brave when they were safely in front of them computers at home (*cough* Lisa_T *cough*), cringed away behind taller members of the group. Before anyone could move or speak, the three women were among them, pinpointing those most afraid with eerie accuracy and seeming to know their fears.
Matey stopped in front of Emily, being, even with her diminutive height, several inches taller than that member of the CBB, and smirked. Emily stuck out her chin and tried not to look afraid, but Emma, who was nearby, noticed a flash of fear in the girl’s blue eyes and moved over to stand behind Matey, tapping her on the shoulder and making the most of her six feet.
“Respect your elders, child,” Matey snapped, smirking as Emma’s green eyes flashed with fury.
Lesley, meanwhile, had been confronted by both Elinor and Miss Bubb, who had managed to cut her out of the group and had finally come to a stop a short distance away. Her gaze moved between them, wondering what they were planning to do to her.
Hilda and Nell exchanged worried glances. They had no way of knowing what power Elinor might have, nor whether the three women could be carrying weapons of some sort. It was obvious that they were prepared for a group this size, so surely they would have come ready to take their opponents on.
While this was happening, the sky was darkening. Large raindrops began to fall from the sky, quickly soaking those who stood on the mountainside. Lightening forked the sky at intervals and thunder rumbled almost constantly.
At this point, Vikki and Rachael, the two nearest CBB members, made a dash for their friend. Matron, always nippy on her pins, grabbed Vikki and stopped her in her tracks, throwing her bodily at a group of CBBers, who clutched at her to prevent her landing hard on the ground. Half a dozen of the other CBB members grabbed Matron and, despite her strength, forced her onto the ground, where they sat on her, Lisa, remember something she had read in one of the books, sitting on Matey’s head and thus very effectively muffling her screams!
Before Rachael could reach Lesley, however, Elinor produced a knife and held it at Lesley’s throat.
“Not another step,” she snarled, and Rachael was pulled back by Mohini and Chloe. Unfortunately for their good intentions, the slipped in the mire that had been caused by the rain and all three fell to land in a puddle, while Elinor and Miss Bubb laughed mockingly at their plight.

Hey, what did I do?!

I read this bit and couldn't resist editing it... ;) Apologies..

While this was happening, the sky was darkening. Large raindrops began to fall from the sky, quickly soaking those who stood on the mountainside. Lightening forked the sky at intervals and thunder rumbled almost constantly.

The CBBers and RCS contingent waited with bated breath. Then they heard a wild scream, and turned to see EBD, Bubble and Matey slowly dissolve into slush.
"We're melting!" howled Matey.
"Horrible little girls!" gurgled The Bubb.
"Who'd have thought a pack of good little and not so little girls like you could destroy all my beautiful wickedness?" gurgled Ellie-Bellie before she slithered into nothingness with her erstwhile companions.
The company stood in stunned silence. Then Hilda and Lesley were pushed forward to investigate. Together, they lifted a fold of apron and a grey wig...and found nothing beneath it.
"She's gone. She's gone!" yelled Lesley in delight.
Everyone heaved a sigh of relief and returned to watching the C&D board, bouncing on trampolines, and getting drunk on huge bottles of baileys.

My dear Hilda,
That may be the case, but it was the treatment of the school who could not comprehend the value of my educational prowess that directed me to the path of illness. But, providentially, my illness did assist me in one major way: I became acquainted with the proficient and devious Miss Elinor Brent-Dyer. With her assistance I arrived in the Oberland, knowing that you could not turn me away in my hour of need.  Do you really think that I would willingly ask for your assistance and place myself in your debt? Never! The sole reason for my appearance at the Oberland was to set the groundwork for Miss Brent-Dyer's mastery to come to the fore.
And do not believe that our disappearance in the mud means the end of us! We have arisen before, we can do so again.
Yours,
Miss Bubb.

PS: That mistake on my part is simply evident of the harsh illness that I suffered through. But I would gladly suffer through more if it meant the CS and the Real CS would receive their just deserts for their horrendous treatment of the illustrious Miss Brent-Dyer and myself.

Well, I'm the oldest one on this board, so I'm certainly not going to do as that lot tell me to. What we need is another Board Meeting, where they lay down exactly how the Real Chalet School is to be run, even down to barbecues and discos and going surfing, the last little details, that way the twerpy trio can't alter things.

Don't forget, in the Real CS, I'm the Senior Housemistress, which means that I'm the Head of Boarding, so I'll just alter everything back to how it should be on the grounds of health and well-being, and call in doctors to back me up.

Just before I begin: My dear Hilda, I thought I had broken - and I do mean broken - that nasty habit of yours as far as being such a humble supplicant. I'm afraid I'm tired of it. I will take care of you, but only when I'm finished with everyone else.

“Is that the best you can do?” a voice asked flippantly from amid the CBBers, and while several looked askance at the woman’s daring, most people grinned, recognising Rachel’s voice. “I thought you had more imagination than that, Ellie Bellie, first cousin to the TEM!”
Rachel’s teasing broke the tension that had rapidly been building, and even as a number of people muffled their giggles, someone else added their share.
“That’s not a knife,” one of the Australians drawled, thankful for Crocodile Dundee for the first, and probably only, time in her life. She produced a long-bladed carving knife and flourished it, even as the other Australians stared at it and wondered how it had been smuggled through customs. “This is a knife.”
A suppressed titter ran through the group, particularly among those members of the Chalet School in Australia, who had watched that film in one of their recent movie nights. Elinor flushed up and glared at them all angrily.
“She can’t hurt us out here,” Nell murmured in Hilda’s ear at that moment. “Do you feel anything, Hilda?”
The Senior Head of the Chalet School replied softly in the negative. “I’m worried about that knife,” she added quietly, and knew from the half-glances she received that a number of the staff and prefects were listening. “The last thing I want is to have Lesley hurt.”
“What on earth is Tassie_Ellen doing?” Peggy Burnett demanded, seeing that woman shift something from one hand to the other, her eyes on the knife in Elinor’s hand, which was dangerously near Lesley’s throat.
“That’s a boomerang,” Nell exclaimed, remembering just in time to lower her voice. “Oh, goodness!”
Both Kathie Ferrars and Rosalind Moore had nodded understandingly at this, but even as the others began to demand a further explanation, the boomerang whizzed from Ellen’s hand, hit the blade of the knife with a sharp clang and then rebounded into Elinor’s mouth, from which blood began to pour, even as the knife clattered onto the ground, some distance away from Elinor and Miss Bubb.
Elinor exclaimed at the pain and her hands flew to her bleeding mouth, even as Miss Bubb slapped the side of Lesley’s head hard enough to stun that young woman, who slumped to the ground, thus meaning, as she complained forever after, that she saw nothing of what followed.
“Get them!” a voice yelled from among the CBBers, but before anyone could move, another voice broke in, silencing the low undercurrent of angry mutters that had begun as a result of Miss Bubb’s actions.
“Stop!”
Everyone but Lesley and Matey turned at this new voice, and a united gasp came from them all as their collective gaze fell on the sight before them.

Post by Elinor on Dec 29th, 2003, 8:46pm
A very large wooden building stood a short distance away, the wooden carved balconies suggesting that it was several storeys high. Several other buildings, all small chalets, were scattered around it, and a large wooden fence surrounded the whole, with only a gate to reveal the front door. Between that gate and the confrontation taking place on the grassy space stood a group of women, led by one who was identical in looks to the woman who was still rubbing her maltreated mouth.
“The real Elinor Brent-Dyer, maybe,” suggested Carolyn to the other members of the CBB.
“Mademoiselle Lepattre,” Peggy Burnett, who had been a pupil during the Frenchwoman’s tenure as Head, exclaimed. “Oh, and Herr Laubach!”
“Luigia di Ferrara,” Nell Wilson burst out, and that young woman smiled.
“And Ruth Herbert,” Hilda added.
The group was, in fact, made up of all those characters who had died, including such people as Mary-Lou, who Lesley had been prevailed upon to do away with in the same story that had released Miss Annersley from her prison with the evil Elinor. Realising the state of those people massed behind the original author of the series, a number of the more insightful among those present turned their gazes to Miss Bubb. As far as they had known, her death had been listed as inevitable. So how was it that she was here with the evil version of Elinor?

At this point, Elinor Brent-Dyer led the group forward, until they were only a few feet from Elinor, who seemed to have frozen upon hearing her alter ego’s voice. Miss Bubb, on the other hand, glared icily at her real creator.
“You are only here under a delusion,” Elinor Brent-Dyer told the school’s former Headmistress. “She,” with a wave to indicate evil Elinor, henceforth referred to as ‘EBD’, or I think we shall all go mad, “had the false idea that, as you were never actually seen to die, she could use you for her own evil deeds. You may join us,” with a wave to indicate those people around her, “or share her fate,” with a dismissive nod at EBD.

Finally, EBD raised her head, and her eyes had so darkened with fury that they were completely black as she glared at the woman who stood above her.
“You are nothing without me,” she hissed.
Elinor Brent-Dyer smiled. “On the contrary,” she said, so quietly that those at the back had difficulty in hearing her, “you are nothing without me. You are the part of me I wish had never existed – that I should never have allowed to take flight and become real. You are a result of a weakness in me that could never quite manage to force you away, as I should have done when I first realised what I had made. But now I have the chance to correct my errors, and I will not be weak this time.”
Hilda and Nell exchanged glances, remembering what they had seen on the videotape that they had been given several months after Hilda’s rescue.
“This will be your final destruction,” Elinor Brent-Dyer told her evil alter ego. “Never again will you be able to affect the lives of others. And we will all,” she added, looking around at the assembled group, “be happier because of that.”
As Elinor finished speaking, a haze of smoke appeared around EBD. It rapidly thickened, becoming darker with every passing second, and reached out tendrils to draw Miss Bubb into its heart. She gave a shriek, but failed to pull herself away, until she was lost amid the pit of blackness that seemed to sink into the ground. Then, with a flash, the smoke was gone, taking EBD and Miss Bubb with it. Lightning cleaved the clouds apart and sun streamed onto the crowd, most of whom exclaimed in relief as their clothes gradually began to dry out.

Title: Re: Welcome Back, Elinor. Take two.
Post by Elinor on Dec 29th, 2003, 8:47pm
Elinor crossed the ground, the people parting in front of her like Moses and the Red Sea. She came to a stop in front of those who were still holding Matey to the ground and gestured at them to let her up. It was a bit of an effort for Lisa, who had become very comfortable, sitting on Matey’s face, but several people offered her hands and she was hauled to her feet, leaving Matey grovelling in the mud.
“It wasn’t my fault,” that woman whimpered. “It was Elin – that other woman! She made me that way!”
“God, how pathetic!” Chloe exclaimed scornfully. “I can’t believe we were actually afraid of her!”
There was a general muttering of agreement and various heads nodding, even among the group that had come, with Elinor, from the school’s first home.
“You have failed,” Elinor told the cringing Matron. “I created you to be a motherly figure to those girls who required it, while keeping strictly to the necessary rules that would ensure the school ran smoothly. Instead, Gwynneth, you have let your hunger for power overtake you. I saw the way you were going and tried to correct you by altering your position within the school, to the sometime confusion of my readers and the disappointment of myself, but always you were brought back, and each time with more power than before. That was not my doing, but by the time I saw through to the real truth of what was being done, there was nothing more I could do. Now, however, I can and must do something.”
Elinor fell silent, and gradually the black cloud appeared, even thicker than before. It took longer for it to fully cover Matey, but finally the flash made the smoke dissipate to reveal a patch of grass that steamed silently for a while.

When the last remnants of smoke had blown away in a light breeze that had sprung up, Elinor raised her head and looked at those gathered around her. She nodded slowly as her eyes travelled from one face to another, until she finally stopped at Hilda and Nell.
“You two,” she said, speaking loudly enough that everyone could hear her, “are everything I had hoped when I first developed you in my mind. You have become strong enough to take on and defeat your worst enemies. You have overcome every adversary. And you have helped to shape and develop many hundreds of girls who have been entrusted to your care. You are selfless and kind. I could ask for no better people to continue to lead the school that I created. I am proud of everything that it has been, and that it will continue to be. I wish you all the best for the future.”
There was a moment’s pause after Elinor finished speaking. Then the silence was broken by the twittering of a bird, which circled overhead and came to land on the roof of the school, above the door. Those people who had accompanied Elinor out of the Chalet now allowed her to lead the way back in, and even as they did so, the building began to fade from view. The bird, however, remained, and when the school was finally gone, it could be seen that a large tree was standing on the spot where it had been, and that the bird was on the largest branch, chirping happily.

The End

And the question you have to ask yourselves is, just which Elinor have you been calling all sorts of names...? :)

Great link to the original Real CS story, and an almost magical ending.

Ahem!

I will admit to knowing from the start the real identity of 'Elinor', I'll also admit that I knew how the story would pan out (although not that Lesley would be knocked out and therefore miss the end >:() However, I did not write this story.

This story was written by KB - she is the one that deserves all your praise. ;D

As far as the Real CS is concerned - I am more than happy for this to stand as part of the series!
