Title: Poor deluded CBBers
Post by Nina_Brisley on Dec 31st, 2003, 3:07pm
You think that Elinor has gone and the story has ended, do you realise the risks you have taken by archiving the story!!!

I know Elinor, I've met her and I realise how dangerous she is, and you must be careful, this good Elinor is just another screen.

Believe me I have reasons to be scared of her and to wish she has gone.  I carry around a guilty secret with me that has never been uncovered, and one I feel she is close to discovering.  Again, you must be careful!!

Title: Re: Poor deluded CBBers
Post by Nina_Brisley on Jan 1st, 2004, 1:44pm
What do you meen who I am?  I'm Nina!!  :P

Nina cautiously opened the letter and did a little jig of glee at it's contents.  She had a job, her very own job!!  It had only been a few months ago when she had sent her portfolio around to different publishers who might be interested in a new illustrator, but she had not thought she would hear so soon.

Chamber's had asked her to design a cover and four black and white illustrations, for a book by an E.M. Brent-Dyer.  They had written to say this way Miss Brent-Dyer's first book, and so they felt a new illustrator was appropriate.  What luck for her!  This was one up on Joyce, who had had to write her own book to get her pictures included.

They had given her very little information to go on.  The letter said the book was about 'a boarding school in Austria', but they would be sending her the manuscript shortly.  Well at least she could get on and sketch some mountains ~ afterall there were mountains in Austria.

Title: Re: Poor deluded CBBers
Post by Nina_Brisley on Jan 1st, 2004, 1:54pm
It was another few weeks before the manuscript arrived, and Nina plunged striaght away into reading it.  The book, entitled School at the Chalet, told the story of how Madge Bettany set up a school in the Austrian Tyrol ~ I think you know the rest  ;) and Nina found it thoroughly intertaining.  Madge's independant spirit reminded her of her own wishes and ideals, and she vowed to do her best to bring alive this work with her pictures.

Being swept away with the excitement, Nina started work before she had finished the book, and it was a thing she would come to bitterly regret, for one day disaster struck.  She had treated the manuscript with great care, knowing it to be the only copy of the book in existence.  But returning to her bedroom one evening, she was horrified to discover her window latch had become unfastened, and the manuscript had blown all round the room, much off it coming to reside in the merrily burning fireplace!!

Title: Re: Poor deluded CBBers
Post by Nina_Brisley on Jan 1st, 2004, 6:00pm
Lulie, how close you nearly are, but you see EBD was the genius and I just mediocre.

Nina dashed to the fire and made a grab for the papers but only proceeded to burn her hand.  Wringing it in pain, she gave the fire up as a bad job and rescued the remaining pages from around the room, sadly realising only 15 pages had survived.  Later, on investigating the window, she discovered that a branch of her beloved apple tree, had shattered the pane in the high winds, and this had caused the window to blow open, but at that moment she had no thoughts but for the destroyed manuscript, and what poor Miss Brent-Dyer would think.  All that hard work gone to waste.  This was too much for Nina, and curling up at the bottom of her bed she cried her heart out bitterly.

Title: Re: Poor deluded CBBers
Post by Nina_Brisley on Jan 1st, 2004, 6:01pm
She was only brought out of her tears by the continued throbbing in her hand, and Nina realised she must see to the burn before it got worse.  Strapping up one hand with the other took some doing, and it gave her something else to think of for a while.  But then the problem returned and with it further realisation.  Nina had not been brought up as a selfish child, and this had been proved by her immediate reaction to the disaster.  But now she realised that her own career would be over with before it had even begun, who would continue to employ a girl who destroyed the very books that would be her livelihood!  And her Mother and Father had been so proud.

Unfortunately I do not have the power to remove Elinor on my own, but I can certainly provide assistance to whatever actions that the CBB takes.

Title: Re: Poor deluded CBBers

Desperately she tried to remember the story, oh how she wished she had read it all!  But luckily she had been blessed with a fly-paper memory, and slowly it came back.  The first line had stuck in her head anyway, so that was easy.

‘If only I knew what to do with you girls….’

She wrote on and on until her hand began throbbing again, but she was determined to keep going, after all, considering what she had done, a little pain was nothing to endure.

Title: Re: Poor deluded CBBers
Post by Nina_Brisley on Jan 2nd, 2004, 5:05pm
Over the next few days she was able to write out the story more or less as the original.  But then she reached the chasm, and not even those remaining pages gave much help.  Only a few pages had survived, which she had not originally read.  They gave her a clue that a girl had been severely punished and had run away up a mountain, but nowhere did it say which girl.  Nina sat and puzzled.  She remembered a comment by Grizel that she would like to climb the Tiernjoch, a particularly cruel mountain, but had this been the chosen mountain.  Also Joey was rather spoilt in some ways, and Nina could see a situation where Madge would have to severely punish her sister for a particular piece of impudence.  But which to chose?

You know who else I think had influence on EBD? L. M. Montgomery. Anne marries a doctor, has twins, writes.... sound familiar anyone? There are lots more similarities, and EBD even has the carrots scene as a Saturday evening entertainment.

Title: Re: Poor deluded CBBers
Post by Nina_Brisley on Jan 3rd, 2004, 10:15pm
Nina finally plumped for Grizel, deciding that Miss Brent-Dyer’s comments on her stubbornness were leading her this way.  It was a hard decision to make.  She felt much sympathy for Grizel’s situation, and a growing dislike for Joey, but she felt this was true to the book and so committed herself.

With her time spent on writing, Nina had had barely any time to do her work, and she had to hurry to get the pictures finished, making use of the sketches she had done previously.  She sighed as she regarded them before she packed them off with the new manuscript, she knew she could have done better and just hoped that Chambers would accept them.  After all it would be her just reward if they were rejected.

Title: Re: Poor deluded CBBers
Post by Nina_Brisley on Jan 3rd, 2004, 10:16pm
But the book was accepted and nothing was said about the book.  Nina sighed with relief as she realised she must have made the right decision, and she was secretly thrilled to be asked to illustrate the second ‘Chalet Book’.

When this manuscript arrived Nina made no mistakes and it was treated like a Queen.  But on reading it, Nina was horrified that it must have been Joey who ran away up the Tiernjoch, as the characterisation of a bitter and put upon Joey nowhere near matched the heroic Joey she had created!!

Title: Re: Poor deluded CBBers
Post by Nina_Brisley on Jan 5th, 2004, 3:19pm
Nina was puzzled, if it was so obviously different to her, why hadn’t Miss Brent-Dyer spotted it?  Why hadn’t the people at Chambers noticed the difference?  But there was little time to ponder this.  Nina realised resignedly that she would have to rewrite yet another story, as she was sure the bright young readers would realise the difference immediately, and then there would be a lot of questions!

Title: Re: Poor deluded CBBers
Post by Nina_Brisley on Jan 5th, 2004, 3:20pm
And so Nina’s long career of rewriting Miss Brent-Dyer began.  It was easy enough for the first few books.   Joey became well-loved rather than the bug bear of all.  And Grizel rather than the complex heroine became the complex ‘odd character’.  But she found that other characters had to be adjusted, just slightly, to fit this new style.  But then disaster struck.  When reading Rivals of the Chalet School, Nina was horrified to discover Miss Brent-Dyer had killed Joey off, because she had become just too awful!

Sorry, I've been busy drawing the TEM, funny how she keeps turning out like a very fat Joey!

Over the years the consequences were far reaching.  Nina found that after only a few books the tone of the original had completely changed and been replaced by her own influences, which affected more than one character.  Grizel came back to teach music and was a popular teacher.  She remained a central character in the series, married Jack Maynard, and had three children, her only daughter making a successful second prefect.  Mddle Lapattre was a very successful Head and ran the school on modern lines.  Madge divorced Jem Russell and came back to teach, and Jem married Hilda.  The EBDisms were a result of Nina having to write so quickly that she didn’t check and relied on the editors to spot them.

How did I get away with it.

On meeting and befriending Miss Brent-Dyer it became apparent that she had never read one of her on books and actually hated them.  She had illusions of being a great writer and was thoroughly disgruntled at being relegated to a children’s author.  This was why she had put so many adult themes into the early books.  Some of which I’m glad you will never read!

How did I manage it?

The real problems came when I was replaced by D Brook, I had to try every method to intercept the manuscript so that it didn’t fall into the wrong hands.  The CS in Oberland was one occasion where I failed and I was lucky!

This means that Elinor cannot hurt you.  She has no control over the characters as she claims.  She might have created some, but those you have read about have changed so much from the original that they are truly my characters now.

The only time you have to worry is when some of your 'drabbles' come remarkably close to what Miss Brent-Dyer originally wrote.

Thank you for listening to my sorry Saga, it is now at an end and I am free of my burden.

So Elinor wrote the books, but Nina rewrote them, and now we're all writing the original stories subconciously as drabbles?

May I have a new brain please - this one just exploded.

Makes perfect sense to me!
We are recreating what EBD originally wanted in the books before Nina got to them. So if Nina had not re-written the entire series none of the attacks from the mutations of EBD would be happening. So if you want to blame anyone for it, blame Nina!

Title: Re: Poor deluded CBBers
Post by Esmeralda on Jan 10th, 2004, 11:07pm
Well - if you really want to know.....

"Brains, like any other offal require careful cleaning and soaking for at least an hour, but they are so tasty, nourishing and inexpensive that they are worth a little trouble.

Cover the brains with water add two s p o o nfuls of salt and leave for 1 hour.  Rinse throughly under cold running water and remove the skin that covers the brains.  Cut away any fibres and discoloured parts and remove any bone splinters. Put the brains in a pan with enough milk to cover, bring to boil and simmer 10 minutes or until the brains are firm. Drain and set the milk aside.  Cut the brains into half inch slices and arrange themon a serving dish.  Cover with foil to keep warm. Peel and chop onion & garlic.  Cook in melted butter over a gentle heat for 5 mins, stir in flour & curry powder, mixing well. Add chicken stock and the milk that the brains were cooked in, blend and simmer until the consistency of thick cream.  Peel grapes and remove pips, add grapes to the sauce and simmer another 5 mins.  Stir in cream, season to taste with salt & pepper.  Pour sauce over brains and serve with plain boiled rice and triangles of toast."

Although, I suppose it would work with human brains - the principles the same......

With mint sauce and new potatoes by any chance?

Whoever was yelling for the Head, you're barking up the wrong tree. We're in Nina's drabble- what she says goes, and (as far as I can gather) it's not Hilda you want, it's that drip Therese Lepattre (does NKB know how it's really spelt, just out of interest?) and who'd be scared of her?

*hisses to Vikki that if she fancies a little sedition, now might be a good time*
