Title: Advent Drabble No. 19
Post by Rachel on Dec 19th, 2003, 8:49am
No, I haven't written the start!

Just to let you all know that I (living in Portsmouth) am off to Plymouth for a day trip. Therefore, I may perchance be a little late posting my reply, but it will be here before midnight. Oh yes, it will.

Hope you enjoy Plymouth, Rachel.  That was where I used to go shopping when I was growing up in North Cornwall.

Hmm, Rachel to start and me to finish, I'm not sure I'm brave enough for that!!!

Here is today's start...

Twelve-year-old Daisy skipped across the entrance hall in direct defiance of the school rules. That this was forbidden never even entered her head, full as it was of plans for the forthcoming weekend.
“Gwensi, Beth,” she shouted excitedly as she burst into the common room, “Guess what Auntie Jo has said,”
The other two girls jumped up and ran across to their third, her enthusiasm being infectious.
“Tell us then,” they chorused, “Come on.”
Daisy grinned, part of her loving the sensation she was causing and relishing bringing good news, then she relented, “If the weather holds we can all of us, us three I mean, go and spend the weekend at Plas Gwyn. Robin will take us down on our bikes on Friday afternoon in time for tea and Uncle Jack will bring us back in the car on Monday morning as he returns to the San.”
The three hugged themselves at the thought of this treat. Joey would be sure to give them a good time, and being so close to the end of term this was unexpected. They fell to making plans and spent the rest of the evening in a glorious huddle unaware of the envious glances coming their way from the rest of the form.

The following morning sobered them up somewhat. It had begun to snow and continued for the rest of the day with very little let up. The trio wandered around the school looking glum and pouring cold water on the plans of the rest for snowballing and tobogganing.
“Stop being such miseries,” said Robin when she came across them skulking in the cloakroom, staring out of the little windows at the swirling flakes. “Joey will take us if she can, and if the weather is too bad then we will have to stay here, grouching won’t make any difference and will only make you and everyone else miserable.” This brisk treatment from someone they had expected sympathy from had the effect Robin desired and for the rest of the day they kept their feeling to themselves.

Luckily for the three young girls the snow stopped and there was a frost over night. The Friday dawned bright and crisp, with a nip of frost still in the air. Miss Annersley received a phone call early in the morning the result of which saw Robin, Beth, Gewnsi and of course Daisy being called to the study at morning break. The first three turned up as soon as they had drunk up their milk, but Daisy was nowhere to be seen. Miss Annersley looked up as they entered and bade them be seated.
“Where is Daisy?” she asked.
Robin shook her head, “I’m afraid that I couldn’t see her, but she knows she’s wanted. I can’t see that she would keep you waiting Aunite Hilda.”
Miss Annersley frowned at Daisy’s dilatoriness, but was fair enough to know that Robin had done her best to look for the girl. It was at that moment that Daisy burst through the door. There was an amazed silence, then laughter from the girls, before they looked warily at their head teacher.  The reason for Daisy’s lateness was now obvious. There was ink all down one side of her tunic and her hands and face were streaked with the same ink. It was evident that she had been trying to scrub it out and in doing so had spread it over her face making the situation worse.
“I’m sorry,” she gulped, “I didn’t know if I should be late or clean. My fountain pen broke when I sat down with my milk, but I can’t get it out.”
Miss Annersley pursed her lips tight together in an attempt to stop laughing herself. Then gave in, relaxing the girls who were not sure how she would take Daisy’s appearance. Once all had stopped laughing she asked Robin to escort Daisy to Matron who would help her tidy herself before they all got ready for Joey who had found a spare petrol coupon and was coming to collect them for the weekend.
“I rather think she has something special in mind. She was determined to get you away somehow. So run along and pack now because she will be here directly after lunch. She needs to be home for the triplets tea.”

But that's no good! I'm out from 9 in the morning until probably gone midnight and I won't be able to read Rachel's twist for ages!  On the other hand, I suppose wondering what's going to happen next might pass a few hours in the car.

Thanks Carolyn - now waiting patiently for Rachel's part.

Trying to wait patiently for the end of this, but I can't stay up late waiting for the last part and I probably won't get time to read it in the morning either as I have to be at work at 7.30 tomorrow morning, ready to open at 8, won't finish until 6.30 at the earliest either.  The joys of retail at this time of year.

*wanders to the hug box, but sees that there are people who need them far more than I do and feels guilty for whining*

Sarah (Grembles) there are plenty of hugs in the box for everyone, and working 7.30am to 6.30pm, especially in a shop at christmastime, is a perfectly valid reason for having a little whinge!!

I'd just like to say, as this seems the most appropriate place, that Kathryn very, very kindly sent me all the lost advent drabbles as I missed them due to hols.

I spent all morning giggling wildly (and trying to spot the bit where Carolyn stopped and Rachel started!)  ;D ;D

Thanks Carolyn and Rachel - you cheered up a very dull day!! You're stars!  ;D

*still smiling*

But I really dont know how you come up with all these ideas Carolyn! Does your plot bunny charge for Christmas overtime?  :P

I'll try and remember to change it before I put on the site or post it to Liss.

Considering what Rachel does to these stories I would have thought that an EBD ism over age was the least worry. :P :P

The plot bunny doesn't charge at all, he demands time and food that is all.

Joey had surpassed herself. When the four girls arrived at the Maynard home, they discovered that, unbeknownst to anyone, Joey had organised an Octopus sanctuary in the living room. Many of them were orphaned, and several were crippled, missing a tentacle or two, and Joey told her guests to be especially considerate in these cases. One octopus, quietly having hysterics in the corner, Joey pointed out as being the only octopus known to man to suffer from hydrophobia.

Robin went off to assist Anna in the kitchen making the party tea (Octopus Surprise – the surprise being it was Octopus) and Daisy, Beth and Gwensi were left to their own devices while Joey went off to see to the triplets. The three girls looked askance at the octopi and tried to find another topic for conversation, but a room full of octopi was nigh on impossible to ignore.
“But where did they all come from?” queried Beth.
“From their mummy and daddy who loved each other very much,” replied Daisy, who knew all about the facts of life.
Gwensi looked at her friend with something near to fear at how calmly her friend could accept the bizarre. Making an excuse, Gwensi edged nervously from the room and ran to the sanctuary of the bathroom.

It was occupied. By a donkey. Called “Hoti”. The donkey didn’t appear to mind Gwensi’s intrusion, but Gwensi felt unable to remain in the room due to a long standing and deeply rooted fear of taps. She tried to think where would be safe and normal in this house, but after peeking into the kitchen and seeing Robin and Anna wrestling with a rather disgruntled Jack, she ran out into the garden, preferring to freeze to death than die of brain overload or potential murder by persons unbalanced.

Daisy and Beth made their way to Daisy’s bedroom, completely unconcerned by Gwensi’s disappearance (they were used to it after nineteen days of drabbles) and were more interested in finding out what presents Daisy had received. The first parcel was wriggling and squealing. So they decided to leave it til last. There were so many packages, that the first one had stopped moving some time before they were ready to open it. When they saw what it contained, they were very pleased they hadn’t bothered about it, as it contained yet another Travel Kitten, of which Daisy already owned several.

Anna rang the gong to let everyone know she had won the wrestling match. It also signified that there was a distinct chance of food in the next four hours, but only if people were waiting at the precise moment Anna chose to serve. Jack, Robin, Daisy and Beth all made their way to the dining room to wait. Joey was conspicuous by her presence. She was wearing her usual outfit of two fig leaves.

The small, fussy, Belgian man said “You have probably wondered why I have gathered you all here.”
“Not really,” replied Robin.
Sensing a lack of interest, Mr Poyrot left.

Suddenly Jack leaped to his feet and shouted “Colonel Mustard! In the ballroom! With the Christmas tree!”
Robin cursed fluently in Japanese before laughing and saying, “Go fish!”
Joey watched this byplay intently before sniggering and muttering “Carving knives!” in Robin’s direction. Robin had the grace to blush and slip the knife further under her napkin. Fortunately this little faux pas went unnoticed as Anna arrived at this point bearing the party feast. All by herself. In one hand. It was an egg.

When everyone had declared himself or herself full and unable to eat another bite, talk turned to the subject of Jack’s little habit. Joey once more declared her utter disgust and refusal to allow it to continue. The three girls all fully agreed, having had to experience it during the previous holidays. (This was later to be a deciding factor in Robin’s decision to join a convent as far from England as she could find.)

After assuring her hosts that she had thoroughly enjoyed her party, Daisy got herself ready to return to school. When she, Beth and Robin were all prepared, they made their way out to the car, avoiding stepping on Gwensi’s frozen corpse on the way past. (Add one)

Surreal is the right description, all right. ???

Surprised all the octopi aren't phobic, if someone regularly hacks off tentacles for tea, but would expect some version of carving-knife-phobic.

Does agree that normal octopi are hydrophilic rather than hydrophobic.

You could, if you write them yourselves.
I don't think either Rachel or I quite realised what we were taking on with this project.
Still, it's been a challenge, and great fun.
