Title: The CS and Tara (FCS)
Post by Lisa_T on Oct 7th, 2003, 2:48am
Blame this one on Jennie. If you're mystified, check out the first page of her Mary Lou thread! ;) Apologies to all Americans!!! Chip in, please.........
***

Mary-Lou Trelawney plunged her spade into the sun baked red earth with a force that was nothing short of vicious. She wiped her perspiring brow. What was she doing here? She was a Middle East specialist, not a rummy expert on the American Civil War! Mary-Lou glared at the remnants of a once graceful plantation house in front of her, and glanced at the information she held in one hand. Tara, that was the name. Built by an Irishman called Gerald O'Hara, who later broke his fool neck by racing his hunter too fast across his land.
Mary-Lou stopped and thought. There was serious trouble on the Gornetz Platz, and Hilda Annersley and Nell Wilson were looking to relocate, yet again. Nell had made a wistful comment about getting too old for the Alpine winters. Mary-Lou wiped her forehead again. Well, this certainly couldn't be called cool. Perhaps the Abbess and Bill would like to relocate here, in Georgia, on Tara? After all, Mary-Lou mused, it'd be perfect for them. Americans living in the South certainly didn't speak good English. It was time the School expanded it's crusade, and that the relative merits of 'may' over 'can' were revealed to this linguistically degenerate part of the world.............

Oh no no no. The idea was to provide a vehicle for our wackier sides again, after all this seriousness. Won't you volunteer, Vikki dear? Or even better, KB? *big eyes at the HG* Jennie definitely should, since it was her idea in the first place!

I suppose, courtesy of Lesley, we could always pinch a few ideas from Real CS.

This is all your fault, Vikki! I was on my way to bed when a plot bunny came along and bit me!
************

The email began with the words"Yo, Hilda!" and Hilda Annersley shook her head sadly as she read this latest effusion from Mary-Lou. It was truly sad, she thought, how the girls' English deteriorated once they left her watchful care. But perhaps, she reflected philosophically, at knocking on 100 it was only to be expected that her grip on modern usage would be slackening a little, even if she did look and feel a good 40 years younger.
Nell Wilson entered and came to lean over her friend's shoulder to read the screen. She had to lean very close. Unlike Hilda, who had still never yet needed glasses, Nell's own glasses were nearly half a centimetre thick.
"Is that Mary-Lou?" she demanded.
"Yes. She wants us to move to some deserted old plantation mansion  she's been digging at." Hilda paused and looked meaningly at her friend. "Nell, she say's it's *hot*.."

You can look big eyes at me all you want, but I am far too busy at present to get involved with carrying a thread. Of course, if I think of something that fits, I will add it, but I'm snowed under until at least Monday.

Hilda looked doubtfully at her friend. "Maybe that's what she means," she said uncertainly. "But you're the geographer! Don't you know enough about that part of the world to work it out from the context?"
Nell glared at her. "About as much as you know about modern slang!" she snapped back.
"Well, what will we do about this invitation then?" the Head returned calmly.
"We'll think about it tomorrow," Nell said with a huge yawn. "After all, tomorrow is another day!"
"I seem to have heard that line before," Hilda murmured as she shut the computer down.

*oh dear. This one keeps hanging around. I really do hope Vikki at least posts more soon- otherwise I'm going to have trouble continuing with Serious Attempt!*
**********

"You have," Nell told her as she fished out her cigarettes. "It was in that film we went to see in Vienna the year we left the Tirol. Dont you remember? Have one?"
"No thanks. Haven't you heard they're bad for you? Yes, I do remember. 'Gone With the Wind' wasn't it?"
"That's the one," Nell agreed, pocketing her ciggy case. "I enjoyed it. I always wanted to look like Vivien Leigh!"
Hilda smothered a laugh. "Well, I rather liked Clark Gable myself," she said dreamily. "He was so much more fun than that dry old stick, Leslie Howard."
Nell stared openmouthed at her friend. "How do you know?"
"Oh, Nell! The year EBD and I had that pay dispute and she put us in that accident. I went to Hollywood during my recovery. You surely didn't think I was moulting in the country while you were lording it at school?"
It was quite clear from the look on Nell's face that she had thought precisely that, but Hilda carried on regardless. "I met them both. Clark and I got on like a house on fire." Hilda stopped to smirk. "We had a few um, *interesting* nights together as well." She smiled reminiscently, before changing the subject. "Now I think of it, I think 'Gone With the Wind' was based in Georgia. You never know. Maybe Mary-Lou's plantation is the house- what was it called? Tara!"
"Don't be ridiculous," Nell sniffed, still peeved at Hilda's revelations. "GWTW was just a story- no more, no less!"
"So were we. *We* got into the Real World. Maybe Mitchell's characters did too. So, shall we go to Tara and investigate it?"
Nell stood up. She stalked over to the door and took another puff of her cigarette, blowing out a smoke ring in her best Bette Davis style. "Frankly, my dear," she snarled, "I don't give a damn!" and she left the room, slamming the door behind her.

I've read/ seen both, but I have to admit I'm using the film here at the moment, although the oneliners I've quoted so far are in both. I think that contrary to the usual, the film is better than the book which is rather too long for most people! Having said that I read it several times in my teens but I couldn't be bothered with it now.

Oh drat. I suppose I've done my Serious Attempt for tonight, so I can be silly.....................................sitting waiting to be bit by the daft plot bunny...................................
****************

"Dear, oh dear, oh dear!" Hilda muttered to herself as she watched the door close behind Nell. "Who'd have thought she'd get so worked up about it?" She circulated around the room, turning off lights and all other technological devices.
On her way back to her room, Hilda was hit by a sudden inspiration. She was wide awake. Why not make use of the time?
Creeping into the tiny sitting room that she and Nell used privately- the public School one downstairs was carefully, expensively, and conservatively furnished. The same could not be said of this one. Fervent admirers of the 'Changing Rooms' series on BBC1, both women had attempted just about every interior design idea they had ever come across, and the room's decoration was eclectic, to put it mildly. Especially since Nell favoured bright bold blocks of colours with lots of fluffy cushions in lurid colours, whilst Hilda preferred what she called 'minimalist classicalism'. Neither Nell nor anyone else understood what she meant by this, but they had to agree that the combination of elaborately decorated antique furniture painted with a stainless steel finish was unusual to say the least.

Hilda gave a deep sigh of satisfaction as she dug got her Special Edition DVD of 'Gone With the Wind' and set it up with a competency that would have been envied by women some years her junior. She then pottered over to the little sideboard- originally Baroque in style, but now it looked like a part of the set from 'Star Trek' gone drastically wrong, thanks to Hilda's 'improvements'- and withdrew her bottle of whiskey.
"This is more like it," she sighed to herself as she took a sip and watched the opening credits of the film quite literally roll by. Before long, Clark Gable appeared for his first scene, and the Head gazed at him sentimentally.
"Lovely, lovely man. Honestly, what does Nell think I am?" She took another swig of the whiskey. "I think she believes that just because my nickname is 'the Abbess' I have to live up to it! It's just because of my name- nothing to do with my personal life whatsoever, and it's time and more than time that she understood that!"
Hilda took a final gulp of the whiskey, and turned the DVD off. Then she marched down the corridor to Nell's room.

Title: Re: The CS and Tara (FCS)
Post by Lisa_T on Oct 8th, 2003, 2:09am
Hilda walked into Nell's room, still with the bottle of whiskey in one hand. "Nell, would you like som- What are you doing?"
Nell crawled backwards through the furs in her wardrobe.
"I'm trying to find my old atlas," she grumbled. "It's so long since I've had to teach geography that I think I've forgotten everything I ever knew. That whiskey?"
"Yes. Want some?"
"Please. There's a tumbler on the bureau." Nell turned back to her wardrobe, and Hilda watched in in some perplexity.
"Why do you want the atlas?" she asked at last. "You know you can't go back to teaching!"
Nell heaved an exasperated sigh and turned back to her friend, who handed her a brimming tumbler. "Why not?" she demanded.
"Oh for goodness' sake! You know as well as I do that you can hardly see to the end of your own nose. I wouldn't be surpised if you'd been kneeling on your blessed atlas and just hadn't realised! And your hearing is going too, my love. You wouldn't last for five minutes in today's classrooms, from all I hear. Apparently, it'd be easier to work in the zoo!"
"And you'd do so well, would you?" Nell asked sarcastically.
Hilda gave her a calm smile. "Oh, I think so," she said complacently.
"Give me that bottle." Nell wrenched the whiskey from Hilda, and glared at her. "Since you're so much better than I am, suppose you try and find that *@%&^&* atlas!"
Hilda promptly disappeared into the wardrobe, and Nell watched her with an expression of grim satisfaction.
After nearly five minutes, she said, "Well?"
"I have to admit," came Hilda Annersley's voice, much muffled by the furs, "that I'm having some trouble finding it. Suppose you refrain from drinking all my whiskey and give me a hand. Many hands make light work and all that!"
Five minutes later, and both had groped some way into the wardrobe, without much success. Suddenly, Nell groped her friend's arm.
"Hilda! We must have turned right round again. Let's get out of here. I'm half suffocated from fur and mothballs and I'm sure you are too!"
Hilda agreed thankfully, and they crawled out towards the light.
"Here we are," the Head said cheerfully as it became light enough for them to see each other's faces. "I think this calls for another drink, don't you?"
She looked up at Nell, who had risen to her feet by this time.
Then she rose too, with a speed commendable in a woman of 98.
"W-where are we?" she gasped.
Nell turned to her. "I've no idea. I've never seen anywhere like this before. It's certainly not the Alps," she mused.
Hilda gripped her arm convulsively. "Nell, I don't think you can hear it," she whispered, "since I imagine you took your hearing aid out. But- but I can hear the sound of gunfire. And- and it's hot. Really hot. Nell, I think-"
Nell stared at her. "Cripes!" she ejaculated. "You don't mean that blasted wardrobe was some sort of time travel portal, do you?"
"I think it must be," Hilda faltered. "I-I think we've travelled back in time. Nell, I think we're in Georgia- during the American Civil War! We're living in 'Gone With The Wind!' "
Nell put her hand into her pocket and withdrew her ciggies. She lit up and took a long puff. “I suppose it could have been worse,” she said philosophically at last. “It could have brought us back into the world of EBD and the original Chalet School, and then, my dear, you and I would have *had* it! I’m sure we can both deal with a few little Americans and guns. Nothing as bad as the Nazis.” She took another puff. “And there’s another advantage. We’ve both got white hair, now. The only colour it could change to now would be the original!”

Just as Nell finished speaking, there was a sudden and large explosion. Luckily for them both, Hilda, with memories of the Blitz, reacted immediately and dragged them both down to the ground.
Five minutes later saw them picking themselves up- the Head as immaculate as ever, and Bill somewhat the worse for wear.
"What did you do that for?" Nell grumbled as she wiped her face- Hilda had forced her down so abruptly that she had ended up face down in the red mud.
"I do apologise. Next time I'll just leave you to be exploded!"
The two walked along for a time in silence. There was an eerie, sinister quiet, apart from the occassional sound of explosions and gunfire in the distance.
"You'd think we were the last people on earth," Nell remarked uneasily, her earlier annoyance forgotten.
At that moment they turned a corner and found themselves at the bottom of a long avenue that must once have been both stately and impressive. Now the trees that lined it were burnt and charred, and the great house they could see in the distance was little more than a shell.
"Surely this can't be it?" Hilda asked uncertainly.
"Shouldn't think so. Mary-Lou's not normally lacking," her partner observed, forgetting that they were in the 1860s.
As if to remind them, a short stocky man with a squint in a very battered Yankee uniform materialied in front of them.

*I do wish this plot bunny would leave me alone*

The little bandy legged man stared at them. Then he said in a Northern accent touched with more than a little Irish brogue, "Can I be askin' you two fine ladies,"- there was a distinct leer on the last word- "what you think you're doin'?"
Miss Annersley drew herself up to her full height of 5'9- a good four inches taller than the soldier in front of her.
"*Can* you?" she asked with an inflection her pupils would have recognised. Beside her, Nell groaned. "Since you do not appear to be bereft of the powers of speech, I am sure that you can indeed ask! The question, sir, is 'may' you."
The soldier gripped his gun and gave the Head a look that Nell decided she did not like. He then went off into a stream of obscenities which neither women recognised, but both knew was unparliamentary language.
"I'd better do something," Nell thought, "or Hilda will get started in on the beauties of the English language." Sure enough, almost as she thought it, she heard the Head's voice begin, "English is a rich and varied language, sir, and there can be no need to-"
She stopped abruptly as Nell grabbed her arm and whispered into her ear in extremely agitated Italian.
"Hilda!" she hissed. "Do shut up. He's got a gun, and I *really* don't think this is the time or place to deliver a lecture on English. I don't know about you, but I don't feel so warmly about grammar that I'm prepared to die for it."
"Nonsense!" the Head returned briskly. "We're British subjects. I'm sure the Confederation would not want to get in to trouble with England- especially since we've been helping them."
"He's a Yankee!" her friend retorted, and Hilda's face fell as she realised the truth of this.
They had no time to consider further. Deciding that these women were too much trouble to be let loose- besides which, the soldiers acquisitive eye had caught the gleam of gold on hands and around necks, and her was determined to take it for himself. With another string of obscenities that made Nell give her friend a warning poke in the back, he produced two pistols and drove them in front of him towards the burnt out house.

Mary-Lou stirred and opened her eyes. Then she sat up with a bang. Where was she? She cast her thoughts back. She had been excavating that old bomb crater, and - *something* had happened. She had no idea what!
She was trying to clear the fog from her brain and get her bearings when a short little man appeared in a blue uniform. Mary-Lou heaved a sigh of relief. He'd help her. Maybe he was on someone else's expedition staff- although Mary-Lou couldn't recall being informed of any other archeological teams in the area.
She turned her bright blues eyes on him and smiled a wide smile. The smile died a quick death as she saw the women who followed him into the room. Both tall, both white haired, and very unkempt- and yet there was something familiar about them. Mary-Lou frowned.

She gave an involuntary gasp as recognition dawned.
"Hilda Annersley and Nell Wilson!" she exclaimed in her usual clarion tones. "What in the name of all that's good are you doing here?"
"We might ask you the same question," Nell returned tartly as she tried to free herself from the dirty hand grasping her arm.
With a final vicious push, the soldier freed Hilda and Nell, and stood glaring at all three. "Here y'are, missy. Here's another coupla mad oul' hags for ye. *They* say they came through a wardrobe. Our Mike said you were muttering somethin' fierce when we brought ye here. Something about holes?"
Mary-Lou tried to recover her self posession.
Miss Annersley spoke for her. "I think that is Miss Trelawney's business," she told him in freezing tones. "We would appreciate it if you would leave us now. Perhaps some coffee?"
Nell rolled her eyes and Mary-Lou groaned. "Hilda, we're being held captive. You can't ask for coffee!"
"I just did," the Head returned serenely. "Well, sir? Or are we to draw the conclusion that your manners are as lacking as your English?"

Growling something unprintable, the soldier gave Hilda a hearty shove before departing. Luckily Nell had been watching him with a wary eye and she was prepared, so Hilda was unharmed.
They sat down beside their former pupil.
"Well, Mary-Lou?" Hilda asked after some moments silence. "What's all this about?"
Mary-Lou went pink with indignation. "You surely don't think this is anything to do with me!" she protested loudly- so loudly that Nell clapped her hand over her mouth and hissed at her to be quiet.
"It's a reasonable assumption," Miss Annersley told her. "I get an email from you suggesting that you're excavating in the American South and that you've found a site that may be suitable for the school to move to. You invite us to take a look, and then-"
"Hilda, you're not being fair," Nell interjected. "It wasn't Mary-Lou's fault we went blundering through the wardrobe."
"No, that was yours," her friend agreed.
Mary-Lou gaped at them. "The wardrobe?" she said weakly.
"That's how we got here," Nell explained. "This isn't the twentieth century, you know!"
"It isn't?" Mary-Lou asked blankly.
"No. That man was a Yankee soldier. We've travelled back in time- to the American Civil War! Although Hilda reckons that we've actually just shifted universes- like we did when we moved from EBD's world to the Real World. Only this time we've gone  from the Real World to the world of Margaret Mitchell's 'Gone With the Wind.' "
"I- see," said Mary-Lou faintly.
"What did you think had happened?" the Head wanted to know.

"Oh, I just thought that I'd hit my head somewhere and some kind soul had collected me and moved me under shelter. This building *is* derelict, after all, and for all the heat during the day, it can be cold at night. But I couldn't understand you two turning up like that!"
Nell had been thinking. "The soldier said something about holes," she mused. "Hilda, you and I came through the wardrobe- that's from 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,' " she added helpfully.
"Yes, Nell, I know that," Mary-Lou said with impertinent patience. "And I imagine Hilda does too, as she's an English specialist! But what's it got to do with me?"
"Putting two and two together, I think that that bomb crater of yours was nothing of the kind. It was a rabbit hole!"
Her auditors gazed at her, their jaws dropping. Mary-Lou was the first to recover and she went into peals of laughter.
"That was lovely, Nell," she said at last, wiping her eyes. "A rabbit hole! How on earth did you think I got down it? I'm not fat, but I'm not that skinny either!" She stopped and laughed again. "Or maybe you thought it was like 'Alice in Wonderland' and that I shrank as I went down or something." Mary-Lou gave a chuckle, but then caught sight of the Heads' faces. Nell was looking impassive, but Hilda had turned to look at her friend with a thoughtful expression, and Mary-Lou's giggles disappeared abruptly.
"Hang on! That's what you do think, isn't it?"
"It would appear to be the only conclusion," Nell told her.
"So- we're from one fictional universe. We get out of that, and then are careless enough to accidentally fall back into another, via devices from children's literature?" Mary-Lou's voice was incredulous. "It sounds too silly! But, if you're right- how do we get out of here?"

Hilda stared in shock at her ex pupil, and Nell leaned over to whisper, "It's not cheek, it's just Mary-Lou!" Hilda nodded as she heard the familiar refrain.
"That's something I haven't yet been able to consider," she admitted.
Nell gazed disconsolately around the dark, dank room. She had dropped her lighter during their journey with the nasty Yankee, and was now starting to feel the need for a nicotine fix. She gazed hopefully at Mary-Lou.
"Mary-Lou, my dear, would you have a lighter on you, at all?" she asked politely. "Once we're nice and cozy and lit up, then we can discuss ways and means of getting out of here."
Mary-Lou went scarlet. She still had trouble realising that her Heads- Nell in particular- were such dedicated nicotine addicts. Bashfully, she produced her own lighter, and Nell lit up, before sitting back with a blissful sigh.
"Well?" demanded Mary-Lou after a few moments silence. "Inspiration hit yet?"
Nell opened one eye and looked at her severely. "Mary-Louise, let me remind you that both Hilda and I are over 90. We are perfectly entitled to a few minutes of rest." She blew out another gust of smoke, and Mary-Lou began to cough.
"Are we restrained in any way?" Hilda asked suddenly.
Nell opened both eyes, and she and Mary-Lou turned to her.
"How do you mean?"
"Well, as Mary-Lou pointed out, this is a derelict building. We're none of us physically restrained in any way- are we?"
Silent shakes confirmed it. "So, is there any reason why we can't simply walk out of- *where* are we?"

Mary-Lou ruminated. "From what I remember," she said at last, "this is Twelve Oaks. Didn't you see the trees?"
"What was left of them!" Nell agreed with a laugh. "There was more than twelve, though."
Hilda waved a hand. "Stop being so pedantic!" she scolded, and Nell swallowed her outrage of being rebuked for pedantry by Hilda of all people. "What do you know of this Twelve Oaks?"
Mary-Lou shook her head. "No idea," she said airily. "To be honest with you, I don't know anything much about this place, and I couldn't care less, either. I'd rather be in Egypt."
Hilda narrowed her eyes and tried to remember what she could of Mitchell's opus. "Twelve Oaks. Wasn't that Leslie Howard- sorry, Ashley Wilkes' -home?"
"I think you're right, Hilda!" Nell exclaimed. "That means we're not far from Tara. Surely, if we can get to Tara-"
"Which is another burnt out old dump," Mary-Lou told her morosely.
"Better than nothing, and certainly better than here!" the Head told her cheerily. "Well, ig there's nothing keeping us, shall we leave now? Darkness will act as a cover." Her blue grey eyes sparkled, and Nell looked at her curiously.
"Hilda, I do believe you're enjoying this!"
"Of course I am. I'd have given my right arm to be part of that escape from Tyrol, but EBD wouldn't let me."

..but i'm havint too much fun! ;D*

"It wasn't fun, I do assure you," Nell told her indignantly as they started to creep out of the room. "At least you didn't have to live with comments about a 'youthful face' contrasting with white hair. Especially when I hit my 50s." Nell stopped and grimaced. "No more youthful comments then, let me tell you!"
Hilda and Mary-Lou ignored her, being too busy trying to work out how to get to Tara.
"What way did you come?" Mary-Lou hissed.
"I think we came in from the right," Hilda returned. "But it was dark and we had pistols to our backs, so I'm not completely sure."
"Doesn't matter. We'll have to make the most of it," the younger woman returned through gritted teeth. "Is it all clear?" she asked Hilda when at last they had emerged onto the ruins of the classically styled front porch.
Hilda, with her eyes that had never yet needed glasses, scanned the area- despite the dark night. "All clear," she confirmed at last, and they darted as silently as they could across the battle scarred land into a trench which conveniently ran down to the original entrance.

All three breathed sighs of relief once they had reached the safe darkness of the trench.
"Now what do we do?" Nell asked, breathing heavily.
"Crawl, of course," Mary-Lou told her tersely, and set the example.
"I suppose we've no choice," the Head sighed, "but I can't help feeling it's rather undignified. And I don't know if I'll be able to walk properly later, either! This deep earth is rather damp, and it does terrible things to my rheumatism."
Mary-Lou stopped so suddenly that Nell cannoned into her backside.
" Ouff! What did you do that for?" the latter asked crossly.
"That's it!" Mary-Lou told her excitedly. "We'll try and find some shawl like things to wrap you two in, and if you're a little bent over with rheumatism it won't matter." Mary-Lou stopped to give a wicked giggle, and the other two glared at her. "And I'll tell anyone we meet that I've been run out of home with my poor old mother and my blind old aunt and that we need to get to our O'Hara relatives at Tara. If we're really lucky," Mary-Lou continued happily, quite oblivious to the basilisk stares now directed her way, "some nice person will have a horse and buggy and will stop to give us a lift. Voila! Problem solved!"

Title: Re: The CS and Tara (FCS)

"I suppose I'm the blind old aunt, given Hilda's famed eyesight?" Nell asked ironically.
"And I have to confess that I'm not greatly enamoured of the idea of being your 'poor old mother', Mary-Lou!" Hilda chimed in.
Mary-Lou gave an offended sniff. "Well, I'm sorry! Have you got any better ideas?"
There was a moments silence before the Heads admitted that, in fact, they could think of none.
"In that case, we've no choice," Mary-Lou told them crushingly, and enjoying it very much.
The Heads muttered something Mary-Lou did not catch, but as she was too busy trying to find some fabric she could use as shawls, she was not unduly worried. Finally, after some poking and prodding, she produced some very sorry remnants of respectively, an old lace curtain and a very rough woollen carriage blanket. The latter had fared better than the former, but neither were in good condition, and the carriage blanket quite frankly stank.

"Here we are!" Mary-Lou said with a flourish, shaking the fabric out. A piece of *something* flew out and hit Nell on the cheek.
Hilda bent down and picked it up. She gave a shudder and dropped it.
"What was it?" Nell asked, peering myopically over her now slightly cracked glasses.
Hilda gave another shudder. "A bone. It was a finger bone- I *think*!"
Nell stood up so quickly that her bones cracked audibly. "Mary-Lou, I absolutely, finally, refuse to do as you suggest." She glared at her former pupil, who was still shaking out the carriage blanket. "Mary-Louise! Do you hear me?"
"'Course I hear you. I'm not deaf!" returned the younger woman irritably. "And less of the 'Mary-Louise', if you don't mind. In case you haven't noticed, I'm no longer thirteen, fifteen, or even eighteen!"
"Age gives one certain privileges," the Head interjected gently, but with a sharp edge. "And we are going to exercise it. We will *not* use those filthy rags as shawls!"
"Oh very well," Mary-Lou grumbled, dropping the material. "What a fuss about some bones! It's evident neither of you are archaeologists!"
"And quite happy not to be," Nell said sweetly. "I've always thought there was something slightly odd about people who revel in digging up graves."
Mary-Lou flushed, gave a snort, and started to march on. The Heads exchanged a grin behind her back.
"Well done, Nell!" Hilda whispered in an undertone.

They trudged on in silence for a while. Mary-Lou was still annoyed at Nell's slurs on her character, whilst Hilda and Nell were starting to feel rather tired.
"I'd love a drink!" Nell muttered, with one eye on their leader.
"Oh, so would I. Coffee would be lovely."
"I meant something considerably stronger than coffee," Nell corrected. "It's a shame I didn't take the whiskey into the wardrobe," she mourned, "or we could have had some of it. I didn't realise our one and only Mary-Lou was such a bully!"
"What are you two whispering about?" Mary-Lou demanded, and Hilda and Nell exchanged guilty glances.
"Nothing at all, Mary-Lou," Hilda returned brightly. "We were just saying how well you are managing this. I'm sure Nell and I would really have struggled without you."
Nell spluttered, but Mary-Lou only said, "Glad you realise it!" and carried on, her air of superiority quite undented.

The sound of clattering wheels made them start, and turn cautiously. A very old wagon, with wheels that looked dangerously near to disintegrating altogether, drew up to them, and Nell and Mary-Lou strained to see whether the occupants were friendly or not. Hilda, of course, had no need to strain. She stepped forward.
"Good morning," she began politely in her well bred English voice, "We were wondering if you could give us some help. We're trying to get to Tara."
The untidy woman driving gave them a harried glance. "Tara? Why do you want to go there?"
"We have reason to believe that we will find what we seek, there."
"What's that then?" The woman's eyes narrowed, and Hilda saw with a start that they were a pure, deep green. A groan came from the back of the wagon, and Hilda realised that she could dimly make out a woman's form. A sudden memory from the film flashed back to her.
"Excuse me, but are you Scarlett O'Hara?"

"Who wants to know?" demanded the green eyed- woman. She turned to the back of the wagon. "Melly, how are you doing back there? I'm sorry it's bouncing you so much. If that- that *cad* Rhett Butler turns up again tonight, I swear I'll whip him. Prissy, look after her!" This last was said sharply to the frightened looking slave girl who was huddled in one corner of the wagon, as far as she could get from both Scarlett and the sick woman.
Nell's jaw dropped. "Cripes! It looks like you were right, Hilda," she remarked.
"I usually am," the Head returned, sotto voce. Then she spoke again, and her voice was as pleading as she could make it.
"Please, Miss Scarlett. We got caught by Yankees at Twelve Oaks. My friend and I are exhausted, and we have a young girl with us too." Mary-Lou darted a furious look at her, but judged it wiser to keep quiet.
"And I see that you have an ill woman with you," Nell added. "We all have some nursing training, and I'm sure that a fine lady like you would be relieved to give up such menial tasks."
"I've been nursing since Gettysburg!" Scarlett snapped back, making Nell groan inwardly and wish she'd agreed to watch the movie with Hilda for the one hundredth time. Evidently ninety nine times had not been enough.
"What's happening, Scarlett darling?" came faintly from the back of the wagon.
"Don't worry, Melly," returned Scarlett firmly. "It's just some people wanting to go home- go to Tara."
"Can't they come with us?" asked the soft voice again, and the Chalet School trio looked at each other hopefully.

Title: Re: The CS and Tara (FCS)
Post by Lisa_T on Oct 10th, 2003, 12:11am
Mary-Lou decided that it was time for a little revenge. She forced herself to lower her voice, and to speak in a slightly higher pitch than usual, to sound younger than she was.
"Please help us," she wavered as convincingly as she could. "My grandmother and great-aunt are very old. It's cold and damp. They both have rheumatism. I don't want them to take cold and die and leave me all alone!" She buried her head in her hands, deciding that sobs would strain her acting powers one step too far.
Scarlett glared at them and took the reins in her hands so sharply that the snap could be heard, and the old nag neighed protestingly. "Oh, do be quiet!" she said nastily, and pulled the reins again.
"Scarlett, couldn't they come with us?" pleaded the gentle voice from the back of the wagon again. "If they're old, and have a child with them. You couldn't leave them out on a night like tonight, Scarlett darling."
Scarlett gritted her teeth and rolled her eyes. Trust Melly to want to help, she thought grudgingly. They were in quite enough bother as it was, without having two old ladies and a whiny child wished on them, but Melly wanted them. Ashley had asked her to look after Melly, and Melly would fret if they did not give aid.
"I suppose you can follow the wagon," she snapped out eventually. "We won't be going too fast. This beast is fit only for the knacker's yard and can't seem to manage much more than putting one foot before the other. Will that do?"
The Chalet School three agreed, and after another hour's slow walking, they drew up at Tara.

Nell jabbed her friend in the ribs as they came wearily up to the white porch. "Here we are," she whispered. "What can you see?"
Hilda turned from offering assistance with the ill woman to answer Nell. "It seems large enough for us," she said musingly. "A little rebuilding would be necessary, I imagine, but I expected that. There's plenty of land for playing fields. Although," she stopped and frowned, "we'd need to set the girls to picking all the cotton and turning the land before we could turf it. We certainly can't play hockey or lacrosse on cotton!"
Scarlett pricked up her ears. "Did you say something about girls picking cotton?" she asked hopefully. "Just that my sister SueEllen says that all the slaves have gone, and the cotton needs picking. She said we'd have to do it. But if you can help..?" and she fixed her cat's eyes on the women beseechingly.
Nell gulped. The thought of picking cotton at a hundred degrees fahrenheit in the shade did not appeal.
Hilda wished she had spoken in Italian. She decided the only way out of this conversational impasse was to fudge the truth. "I know," she said, so sympathetically that Nell shot her a wary look. Hilda's softheartedness had caused trouble before. "My er, my sister and I have had the same experience. So disheartening! But we would like to offer you any assistance we can," she added, ignoring the groans that came from Mary-Lou and Nell at this.

Hilda moved forward to help Scarlett with Melanie. Prissy danced agitatedly around them, not wishing to be rebuked for getting in the way *or* slapped for laziness. Mary-Lou and Nell followed.
"Trust Hilda!" Mary-Lou muttered in a whisper.
"She's too softhearted for our good," Nell agreed. "But bear with her. I have a feeling-"
She did not get to finish. For the second time that night, there was a sudden loud explosion that lit up the area with a glowing light before subsiding. All the women fell automatically to the ground. In the silence that followed the blast, a male voice was heard.
"Aw, shucks," it exclaimed disgustedly. "Hal, you've done it again. Lights!" he bawled.

As requested, bright light filled the area, and the women on the ground blinked at each other. 'Scarlett', 'Melanie' and 'Prissy' were the first to recover.
"Oh, I'm so glad to get out of that wagon," 'Melanie' sighed as she rose to her feet. "George, can't I play 'Scarlett' for a while and let Vivien take my place in the back?"
"Don't be absurd, Olivia," snapped the man who had spoken the first time. He was the director, George Cukor. "Give the audiences some credit. They'd notice the substitution!"
"Not if it was dark," Olivia argued plaintively.
"No! And that's final. Hal, get your ass over here!" George bawled and a gormless looking youth appeared.
"I'm awfully sorry," he said anxiously. "I really don't know what happened there!"
"You never do," grunted the director. "I suppose you were responsible for this crowd of extras turning up on the scene?" He glared simultaneously at both the Chalet School crowd and the luckless Hal.
"I-I-I," he stammered, his few wits almost completely gone at this last unjustified accusation. "I've never seen them in my life before!" he managed at last.
Hilda and Nell looked at each other.
"What was that about always being right?" Nell asked her friend softly. Hilda's cheeks went a little pink.
"Even I can make mistakes! Besides, I wasn't *very* wrong!"
Mary-Lou opened her mouth to say something, but before she could do so, the director came over to them.
"I dunno who you gals are," he snapped. "If you're extras, get outta here. This is one of the key bits in the film and you've gone and *ruined* it!" he shrieked at them.
The three gaped at him.

Title: Re: The CS and Tara (FCS)
Post by Lisa_T on Oct 10th, 2003, 4:12pm
Hilda eyed him with a cold grey eye. "I do apologise, Mr Cukor," she said frostily. "It was completely unintentional on our part, I do assure you. All you need to do is reshoot that scene, without us. And where's the baby?"
The cast, the director, and the cameraman all stared at her. Hilda continued. "As far as I understood, 'Melanie' supposedly had just given birth before she and 'Scarlett' fleed Atlanta. That was- er- *is* one of the most dramatic scenes in the entire production! If you've left it out, you are guilty of literary vandalism and that cannot be tolerated!" This was Hilda at her stateliest, and even Mary-Lou and Nell looked at her admiringly.
George glared at her. The cast and camera crew settled down comfortably, prepared for a good row between the irascible director and these strange women.

George gave a wordless snarl that made Nell and Mary-Lou take a step back. Hilda stood her ground, and faced him calmly.
After a few minutes spent eyeing each other, George gave an explosive snort. "Fine! Since you're the expert, you can direct!" He flung the script book at Hilda and marched off in high dugdeon.
Hilda looked at the papers floating to the ground with dismay. The cast were looking at her with a wary alertness. Nell suppressed a grin.
"Do that crowd remind you of anything?" she asked Mary-Lou.
Mary-Lou glanced at them and an unwilling smile crossed her lips. "They look like a bunch of naughty Middles being sent to the Abbess," she returned. "Nell, what *is* Hilda going to do?"
After a moment's indecision, the Head bent down and retrieved the papers. She looked at the cast.
"First of all, let me see the rushes of what you've done so far," she began briskly.
Nell's eyes nearly popped out of her head. "Hilda!" she protested. "You can't possibly do this!"
"Oh, I can," Hilda said gently. "You've told me yourself I've seen the film so many times I could act in it, let alone direct it. And just think," she added enthusiastically, "now I can change all the bits I didn't like first time round!"

Anything to oblige! I hope you pair are working on your own drabbles too! *hint hint*
**********
Later that day, Nell and Mary-Lou collapsed into the chairs at one end of the studio. They had been 'volunteered' into acting as language coaches, since the Head had decided that she disliked the South American English used in the original, and wanted to rewrite the whol script using only the most correct of correct English. As a result, the cast were writing out one hundred times "The question is not 'can I' but 'may I' "- with the exception of Vivien, who as an Englishwoman herself spoke more properly than the others. When Olivia rebelled, she was treated to a withering glare and an acid comment on her own English that reduced her to breathlessness and made Mary-Lou gasp.
"I've always heard she could be worse than you," she said to Bill, "but this is the first time I've actually experienced it!"
Nell laughed. "You 'got away' with a lot at school, Mary-Lou, or you would have been painfully aware of it, let me tell you!"
Mary-Lou flushed and shut up.
Nell looked at her friend with a frown. The Head had seated herself on a comfortable armchair purloined from the set. When the crew had complained, she had squahed them by telling them that she had no idea of doing anything so undignified as using the lightweight director's chair, and dropping a heavy hint about more lines to come. Needless to say, that had settled them, and she was now free to concentrate on 'correcting' the script.
"We're going to have to do something," Nell said to Mary-Lou. "She seems to have forgotten that we're not supposed to be here! I don't know about you, but after my experiences with EBD and time travel, I'd feel more comfortable in my own mind if we could return to the Real World."
Mary-Lou agreed. She was missing Egypt and Nell had promised to fund an expedition to the Valley of the Queens, looking for lost tombs, and she was raring to go. They began to hatch a plot..

*wondering if people on this thread have never heard of special text effects before(!) *

Nell, aware of her declining hearing, directed Mary-Lou to look as sweet as she could, and go and be nice to the cast.
When she approached them, they looked at her with dislike.
"Well? Whaddya want?" asked Olivia, drawling as offensively as she could.
Clark Gable looked up from the lines he was still laboriously writing. He had been too overawed to protest. "We don't need to do any more of these, do we, kid?" he asked menacingly, with a satirical flick of a black brow.
Mary-Lou smiled. "Nah," she said. "Listen, gang, could Nell and I club up with you lot?"
"You're talkin' normal!" Clark said.
"'Course I am," she agreed. "You didn't think I talked like a Jane Austen-er, a nineteenth century novel- all the time, did you?"
Clark mumbled something incomprehensible. Olivia, whose sweet and demure exterior concealed a character that was quite otherwise, gave Mary-Lou a hard look.
"Why do you want to join us?"
Mary-Lou tried to look ingratiating. She was not very good at it, not having had much practice, but it was good enough for the cast.
"You see," she whispered in the undertone that supposedly carried less than a whisper, "Hilda's a dear most of the time. Really!" at their disbelieving looks. "But she's not quite with it when it comes to the English language. You see," Mary-Lou explained, "she used to be the Head Mistress of an-er- an *extremely* strict English school in Switzerland. They didn't allow any slang and all the girls had to learn to speak the most be-yew-ti-ful English. French and German too, of course," she added thoughtfully.
"I see," said Vivien for the first time. "And is that why she's making their lives a misery?"
"'Fraid so," Mary-Lou told her cheerfully.
"And what's with all this 'can' and 'may' nonsense?" demanded Clark, scowling at the sheet of paper in front of him. He still had 75 lines to go.
"Mary-Lou dear, I can hear every word you're saying!" the Head called over at this point, and Mary-Lou directed a scowl at her that rivalled Clark's for blackness. Fortunately the Head did not see it.
"So much for undertones!" she muttered to herself. Then she whispered, "Never mind. She's a bit gaga over that. Dunno why. That's not why I came over."
"Why then?" asked Clark. "And what about the other lady? She a teacher too?"
"Oh no," Mary-Lou said in shocked tones. "What a thought! She's an-er, I mean, um she's a scientist," she improvised at last, deciding to stick to the truth as far as possible. "That's someone who fiddles with test tubes and things," she told Clark helpfully.
"Cut the cackle!" Olivia said sharply, her hazel eyes fixed on Mary-Lou's face.
"OK. We- Nell and I- want to get Hilda out of here. But we need your help."
"Out where?" demanded Olivia, slightly mollified.
"Out-out um. Where are we?"
The cast looked at her with shocked expressions.

"MGM Studios in Hollywood. Imagine not knowing that!" Clark guffawed derisively.
Olivia and Vivien looked interested. "What ideas do you have in mind?" asked the latter.
"Dunno. But it needs to be done quickly- so quickly that she hasn't got the time or opportunity to react! You heard what she can be like yourselves."
The cast shuddered in agreement, and then they all began to think. With a cautious eye on Hilda, who seemed to have nodded off over her script, Mary-Lou waved frantically at Nell to join them.
"Any ideas?" Nell wanted to know.
"Dope her, gag her, chuck her in the wagon, and dump her in LA," was Clark's suggestion. His taste tended towards the melodramatic.
Nell looked at him thoughtfully, remembering the conversation she had had with Hilda before the wardrobe episode. Fishing around in her capacious pockets, she produced a worn school photo. It had been take the year the School left the Tyrol. Hilda and Nell each carried one for sentimental reasons, in memory of the girls who had died during the war.
Nell peered at it closely. There, in the centre of the front row, was Hilda Annersley in her first year as Headmistress. She had been in her 30s then, and Nell looked doubtfully at the actor. Would he be able to associate the woman in the photo with the elderly lady who had terrorised him so effectively an hour before?

She handed the photo over to him, mentally wondering what she was going to say. The more times she thought about it, the sillier the wardrobe thing sounded, and yet it was the truth.
"Do you recognise this woman here?" she asked, indicating Hilda.
Clark looked at it. The he looked at it again. "I don't know," he said slowly. "It looks familiar." He stopped and frowned, and Nell had to dig her fingernails into her arm to prevent herself from screaming at him.

Well, I hope you have not too bad a time tomorrow, and on the positive side, at least I'll have lots of story to read tomorrow when I get in from work!! (I will, won't I?)

Clark's powers of recognition didn't seem to be working too well. When Nell had been standing waiting for him to say 'Eureka! I've got it," or something similar for more than five minutes, she removed her nails- individually- from her arms. They had made crescent dents.
Mary-Lou came up to her. "Vivien's just had a brilliant idea," she whispered.
"What's that then?"
"Take the Abbess shopping!" was the prompt reply.
Nell looked doubtfully at her. "Shopping? I'm not sure that's her cup of tea."
Mary-Lou scowled. "I don't care! I want to see the shops in Beverly Hills and Hilda's coming too whether she likes it or not!"
"A chaperone?" Nell asked drily. Mary-Lou's eyes gleamed.
"The very thing," she chortled. She gave Nell a deliberate wink and moved over to the Head.
Mary-Lou gave the sleeping Miss Annersley a stiff poke with her sharp nails, and the Head jerked awake.
"Wh-what is it?" she asked blearily.
Mary-Lou tried to look 15 again. "Please, Miss Annersley, Vivien and Olivia have asked me to go shopping. May I?"
The Head heaved a sigh and rose from her chair. "Of course you may, but either Miss Wilson or myself will accompany you. You girls are too young and innocent to be allowed to trail around wicked places like this with only a pair of flighty actresses with you."
Mary-Lou looked prim. "Yes, Miss Annersley," she murmured submissively, lowering her eyes so that the Head could not see them sparkle. "Please, will you come? Miss Wilson is-er- her foot's hurting again."
"Very well. I'll leave her with the script," and, suiting the action to the word, Miss Annersley deposited her script on the indignant Nell, before going off with Mary-Lou and her companions.
Clark watched the Head's departing figure with a confused frown. He looked at the photo again, and Nell sat up.
"It really looks awfully familiar," he muttered again.

Hilda, trotting after Mary-Lou and Co., suddenly stopped dead and uttered a strangled exclamation. Mary-Lou turned at the sound.
"What's the matter?"
"L-look!" Hilda stuttered. Mary-Lou looked in the indicated direction and back at the Head again. She couldn't remember ever seeing the normally composed Hilda in such a state.
"What is it?" she asked again.
Hilda grabbed Mary-Lou and glared at her. "Can't you see?"
"See what?" asked the now thoroughly bewildered and highly irritated Mary-Lou.
"I-it's-"
Hal made another mistake and the resulting explosion drowned the end of her sentence.

Nell, realising that their brilliant plan may be failing, approached.
"Mary-Lou, what's going on?"
Mary-Lou turned a disgusted face to the younger of the Heads.
"She says she sees something! Dunno what. I think she's lost her marbles."
Nell frowned at her former pupil. "Kindly watch your language. And I will not tolerate such impertinence!"
"Or what?" demanded Mary-Lou cheekily. "You'll fine me? Set me lines? Send me to solitary?"
Nell spluttered indignantly and turned to her friend.
"Hilda! What's the matter?"
"O-over there!" The Head was no more coherent than she had been with Mary-Lou, and that young woman rolled her eyes.
Nell turned, a puzzled look on her face. Then she too went white...

"Now what is it?" wailed Mary-Lou.
"It-it's-" gasped Nell.
"Yes, I know," Mary-Lou snapped back impatiently. "I've been through all that with Hilda! Stop the stuttering and get *on* with it!"
"It's me!" said the Head blankly.
"You mean, 'it's I,'" Mary-Lou told her maliciously, before the meaning of Hilda's remark dawned.

"What do you mean, it's you?"
"It's me! I mean, it's I!" cried the Head.
"Yes, you said that. How can it be? You're you- you're standing there!" Mary-Lou eyed Hilda as if she was on the point of sending for a straitjacket.
"Hilda means that's her nearly 70 years ago," Nell explained.
"How can it be? She's not dead! It's not a ghost!"

At that moment there was an eerie howling and the earth seemed to move... there was a swirl of grey cloud and Mary-Lou swore later that she had seen the church belonging to the small Cornish town where she had spent her first ten years, whilst Hilda and Nell saw the familar triangular peninsula that was Breisau..
The whirling stopped with a jerk, and all three found themselves sitting dazedly on the ground.
"W-what happened?" Mary-Lou asked.
Nell shook her head. "I've no idea." She turned to her friend and stopped in shock. Hilda Annersley had shed sixty odd years.
"How did you do that?" she demanded enviously.
"What?" asked the startled Head.
"You look just as you did the year of the accident." Nell paused and moved to examine Hilda more closely. "See! You've got just those three grey hairs on your left temple, there! The ones that EBD kept referring too."
The Head smoothed her now gleaming brown hair complacently and smiled at Nell. "I know. Most tactless, I call it! I suppose I can be grateful she didn't point out their exact location. Oh well, at least I did better than you."
"In that case, since for once you're the younger, you can help me up!" her friend snapped, and Hilda rose easily to her feet before pulling the groaning Nell to hers. Then Hilda turned to Mary-Lou.
"Do you need assistance, my dear, or can you manage?" she asked sweetly.

I think it's because she had already seen her younger self in the distance, but I'm not sure exactly what's happened - some sort of time warp or something.

Mary-Lou gave the Head an evil look and scrambled to her feet under her own steam. "In case you've forgotten, even now you're still not so very young," she told her cattily. "I can still give you a good ten years."
Hilda and Nell ignored her. "Why just you?" Nell complained.
Hilda smirked. "Because I was here at the time. I told you that. And I'm not really as young as I was then- it's just a glamour."
"A what?"
"A glamour. A kind of magic that alters your appearance."
"Rii-ight. OK. So where can I get some of this?"
"You can't," the Head said simply. "You're a Muggle."
"Well, why didn't you use it before?" Nell protested.
"I did! You just didn't notice!"
"Mustn't have worked very well, then," Mary-Lou put in nastily. "We always thought you were both as old as the hills."
The Heads ignored this infantile comment.
"What's that?" Nell asked suddenly.
They turned to see an oversize pink bubble floating towards them..

"Oh no!" Nell groaned as the oversize bubble floated closer. "I think we've done it again!"
"Done what?" asked Hilda as the bubble burst to reveal a woman dressed in what Mary-Lou mentally described as a 'tarty pink balloon.'
The woman gave them a smile.
"Welcome to Munckinland! I'm Glinda, Witch of the North. Are you a witch- hang on, there's three of you! Where's the dog?"
Hilda, who had been about to respond to the question, shut her mouth sharply when Nell gave her a poke.
"We forgot it," Nell admitted.
"That was careless of you! Where's Judy?"
"Don't know," Nell mumbled.
Glinda looked as severe as it is possible to look when dressed in floaty pink and carrying a tatty wand.
"What are you doing here?"
"We were trying to escape," Nell mumbled again.
Glinda beamed. "Yes, I know. You want to go home. What did you do with the red shoes?"
"Red shoes?"
"Yes- the ones you click three times. With the sparkly thingummys on them."
"Listen here, Pinky, all we want is to go home," said Mary-lou, now thoroughly exasperated. "So quit yakking and tell us the fastest way out of here!"
"Well, you click the shoes three times and say 'there's no place like home..there's no place like home.'"
"But I don't *want* to go home," the Head said sulkily."I'm not allowed to use magic there. The Ministry won't allow it."
Glinda glared at her. "That's not in the script. The script says you want to go home, so go home you shall!"
"But how?"
"Just follow the yellow brick road.." and Glinda turned rather slowly (the special effects team were having trouble that day) into a bubble and floated off once more..

"What did you do that for?" Hilda protested, rubbing her arm.
"To stop you looking like a goop," her partner retorted. "You were about to say you're a witch, weren't you? Oh yes, I read that book too. If I'm a Muggle, ergo, you must be a witch. Fine sight you'd have looked if you'd announced it. With that glamour of yours, you wouldn't even have the excuse of old age."
"Come *on* you two!" Mary-Lou wailed.
"Come where?"
"Where she said- down the yellow brick road. I need to get to Egypt, even if you two have nothing better to do."
"The Yellow Brick Road won't take you home, Mary-Lou."
"It won't? Where will it take me then?"
"To the great and powerful Wizard of Oz who is actually and old man playing with dodgy machines. *He* wouldn't get you very far. Quite apart from the fact than we're probably on the Warner Bros lot."
"What's that?"
Nell groaned. "It's another flipping studio, that's what! Now I suppose we'll have to get back to MGM, though I can't imagine how."
"Can't you?" Miss Annersley smiled at them. "I can get us back."
"How?" Mary-Lou demanded, with point.
"I -er- *lifted* this a moment ago," Hilda explained, looking very sheepish. Her auditors gaped at her as she produced Glinda's tacky wand.
"Hilda, dear, that's not a real wand," Nell said as gently as she could manage.
Mary-Lou had been looking about her. Suddenly, she gave a sudden yell and began running full speed into the old farmhouse before her.

"What is she doing now?" Nell asked as she watched Mary-Lou variously bang doors and rattle windows in her attempt at getting into the rickety farmhouse, which looked only too well rooted to the ground. "Mary-Louise! Come back this minute!"
Mary-Lou threw them a look and then returned to her banging and rattling. Nell watched her speculatively for a moment. Then she turned back to Hilda.
"Hilda, this magic of yours.."
"Yes?"
"Would it work on me? I mean, could you glamourise me?"
Hilda gave her friend a doubtful look. "I don't know. I could try, I suppose."
"What about Mary-Lou?" Nell asked eagerly. "Wouldn't it be nice to have her as a manageable ten year old again?" she finished wistfully.
Hilda shook her head. "I'm not sure that would work, Nell. You see, Mary-Lou, like Joey Maynard, is also a witch. How do you think they managed to reform all those people? They're especially gifted with telepathy. That makes it much harder to put a spell on them."
"That never stopped Harry Potter!" Nell snapped, grievously disappointed.
"Unless.." Hilda mused. "Unless she was taken by surprise. Like-"
"Like now!" Nell interuppted, turning to check that Mary-Lou was still engrossed in the house.
Hilda nodded. "Exactly. Well, we can try." She waved Glinda's silver foil wand, and declaimed "Convertus Mary-Louisus into schoolgirlus!"
Nell looked rather sceptical. Harry Potter's spells always sounded so much more impressive than that! To her amazement, there was a shower of sparks and a 'whoosh!' of sound. The grown up Mary-Lou vanished, to be replaced by....

..a very large fluffy pink rabbit with bright blue eyes, currently crowned with a little tiara.
Hilda looked worried. "Oh dear. That wasn't supposed to happen!"
Nell was in hysterics. After a time she was calm enough to speak. "I'm glad you didn't do anything to me, now! As for Mary-Lou,"- she gave the rabbit a look and her lips trembled again- "she must have had a rabbity mouth after all!"

BTW, would anyone have the full text of this in word? I have about half of it, but if some nice person has got it in full and can save me the bother of going through it and cutting and pasting, I'd be grateful. just in case the board strikes again!

I suppose there are now two important queries - are we back in Narnia, allowing the-pink-rabbit-that-was-Mary-Lou to talk, and does the tiara have any significance?

The rabbit seemed to realise something was wrong. Very wrong. It turned and gave Hilda an evil look, before jumping over to her and giving her a deliberate nip in the leg.
Hilda winced in pain, and made a swipe for the bunny, who hopped nimbly out of her reach.
Nell subsided on what looked like a grassy patch but was actually some sort of plastic stuff. "H'mm. Hilda, you'd better get after her. You might try that glacial tone of yours. You never know," Nell added hopefully as she struggled to her feet, "maybe it's a *ten* year old Mary-Lou rabbit."
Hilda shrugged. "Mary-Lou!" she ordered authoritatively.
To their joint surprise, the bunny hesitated mid flight before turning slowly and slinking back to sit at the Head's feet.

Nope. So you can be credited with honesty, at least! ;)
*******************8
Before Nell or Mary-Lou-the-bunny could do anything, Hilda bent down and grabbed the unfortunate Mary-Lou by her long pink ears. Then she turned to Nell.
"Well, that's our one and only Mary-Lou sorted for the time being. What shall we do now?"
"Make some dinner?" Nell asked, her eyes gleaming. "I could fancy a nice rabbit stew, couldn't you, Hilda?"

Title: Re: The CS and Tara (FCS)
Post by Lisa_T on Oct 17th, 2003, 12:27am
Hilda held up the bunny that was Mary-Lou and looked at it doubtfully. "I suppose. Wouldn't it be more to the point to skin it and sell the skin? There can't be that many naturally pink rabbits around."
The bunny began to struggle, and both women looked at it impassively for a moment. Then Hilda said, "Listen, Mary-Lou. You know perfectly well that we'd never do either of those things. But- and it's a big but- unless you can promise me that you will treat us with the respect we deserve, I will leave you in your current state. It's your choice. If you're willing to agree, stay where you are when I put you down. If not, you may find the nearest rabbit hole and start making yourself comfortable. Is that understood?" And so saying, the placed the rabbit down with considerably more gentleness than Nell thought it merited.

OK folks...................
************************************
Mary-Lou sat quietly at the Head's feet, her strange blue eyes looking up as earnestly as it is possible for a rabbit to look.
Hilda waved her wand. "Superc-" she began, when Nell grabbed her arm and interrupted the spell.
"What was that for?"
"Just thinking. Do we want to change her back yet?" Nell spoke in rapid Italian.
Hilda glanced quickly back at Mary-Lou and gasped. "Well, it looks as if you have got your way," she said resignedly to her friend. "Perhaps I should have paid more attention in my Defence Against the Dark Arts lessons. Dumbledore always said I'd get myself into trouble one day."
Nell had not heard half of this. She was too busy sharing in shock at the new incarnation of Mary-Lou Trelawney.
Before them stood a strange animal. In fact, Nell was half inclined to wonder whether Hilda had been keeping in touch with Hagrid at Hogwarts after all. She was sure such a creature could have come from no-where else. It resembled a llama, apart from the lurid fleurescent purple coat, further enlivened with gold splotches. It was possessed of only three legs, and as if to add to the oddness, it retained the bright blue eyes that had been characteristic of both Mary-Lou in both of her forms so far. In addition, the Head's spell had started to work, as the llama had sprouted two long blonde 'Kenswiges', currently tied with the flame ribbons that had been part of the School's uniform before moving to the Platz.Nell looked again at the eyes.
Those blue eyes looked very stormy.

PLEASE NOTE:THIS POST IS NOT PART OF THE STORY PROPER, BUT COULDNT RESIST IT...

Mary-Lou the llama was standing feeling mournful and lonely and misunderstood. No-one knew how it felt to be a purple llama with pigtails.
Just as she reached this point, a small purple three legged llama, with  platinum blonde pigtails, stepped up to her.
"Rotten luck, isn't it?" it said sympathetically.
Mary-Lou agreed miserably. "What's your name?" she thought to ask after a time.
"Vikki," returned the other llama. "I yelled at them for calling me Victoria, and this is what happened!"

Exactly, Vikki! ;D

Mary-Lou the looked at Vikki. "Why don't you come with me?" she suggested. "I need to find a way to be converted back."
"How right you are," Vikki agreed. "I'm starting to get fed up about looking like this and people are so *rude*! Do you know," she continued indignantly, "that there are people out there who actually think this is FUNNY?!"
Mary-Lou scowled fiercely- a very strange sight in a llama. "I know. Nell had hysterics when she saw me. I suppose I'd better see if Hilda's managed to remember the right spell- daft bat!"
Vikki pricked up her pointed ears through the platinum plaits. "Hilda? And Nell? I know those names from somewhere," she said vaguely. "What's yours, by the way?"
"Mary-Lou Trelawney," returned the owner of the name glumly.
If a llama can look pussystruck, that is how Vikki looked at this. "But-but-but-" she gibbered wildly.
"What?"
"That can't be right! They're not real!"
Mary-Lou sniffed- or she meant to, only being a llama, it sounded more like a cross between a 'baa' and a snort. "You didn't really fall for all that junk did you?" she sneered. "Of course we're real. Probably more real than you. Anyway, if we're so fake, how did *you* know about us?"
Vikki looked sheepish- or rather, llama-ish. "Well, you see, I'm part of the CBB. We're all Chalet fans. Only I er- said something um, unwise, and that's how I ended up in this. But if I get to meet the Abbess and Bill, I don't even mind being a purple llama- although it would be more convenient to have four legs, but I suppose I can't complain, seeing it was my er. Um. Where are they? Lead me there!"
Mary -Lou gave her new companion a cautious look before leading her to where Hilda and Nell were waiting.

Meanwhile, Hilda and Nell were starting to worry about Mary-Lou's disappearance.
"I wonder where she is?" Hilda said uneasily. Mary-Lou had caused her a certain amount of grief over the years, but that did not mean that she'd intentionally turned the girl into a llama.
"I wouldn't worry if I were you, Hilda," Nell told her, lazily blowing another smoke ring."This is our one and only we're talking about, you know. She always lands on her feet- all four of them!" and Nell giggled at her own wit.
Hilda glared at her but before she could respond, they heard the sound of a man singing .."High on the hills was a lonely goatheard, lay odl-lay odl-lay odl-lee.." and they looked at each other.
"A goatherd?" mused Hilda. "Nell, do you think it's possible that our Mary-Lou's been mistaken for a goat and is with him?"
Nell spluttered. "When was the last time you saw a purple three legged goat with gold spots and blonde pigtails?" she demanded.
"That's true," agreed the Head, totally unfazed. "But I never thought I'd see a llama like that again. Besides, that was an interupted spell, remember...."

Nell decided she'd heard enough about spells for one day. Besides, she still wasn't altogether convinced that she was responsible for Mary-Lou's second transformation. Accordingly, she chucked her ciggie on the ground, and grabbed Hilda.
"Where is he? The goatherd. I can't hear well enough to make it out!"
Hilda stood and listened. A moment later, she heard a female voice sing- piercingly- "The hills are alive..with the sound of music.."
"They must be in the hills!" she announced definitely.
She started to walk towards the source of the singing, when Nell tapped her again.
"What?" The singing had changed to 'Climb Ev'ry Mountain' and Hilda was more than ever convinced that they would find Mary-Lou at a higher altitude.
"There aren't any hills," Nell pointed out. "Look! It's all flat!"
"What about that hill with the drunken 'Hollywood' sign on it?" Hilda protested.
"That's cardboard front!" her friend said.
Hilda stopped in dismay. "Where can she be?"
"Looking for me?" came a familiar voice, and both women turned round with a gasp of relief.

They turned to find a blonde woman staring back at them.
"Who are you?" demanded Nell, having  fully expected to see Mary-Lou.
"I'm the goatherd! the woman announced breezily. "But I'm also the one who thinks the hills are alive, and the one who has to climb ev'ry mountain. That's not much fun either!"
"But- we thought it was a MAN who was the goatherd!" Hilda expostulated.
The blonde woman gave her a sour look. "Sorry to disappoint you," she snapped, "but I'm Marni Nixon. Julie's done a runner with Chris Plummer and I've been called to take over all her songs and a few others besides. As if I hadn't already enough to do on 'The King and I.' "
"What are you?" Nell asked, rather confused.
"Well, I'm a ghost singer. I sing for people who can't sing for themselves. But unfortunately the studios are  a little strange today. they keep making me act out the songs I'm singing, which explains the goatherd business."
Hilda's eyes lit up. "Then- perhaps- you have seen our llama?"
"I've seen TWO llamas," was the surprising response. "They're not very nice, either. They bit me until I walked in the direction they wanted me. You try singing 'lay-odl-lay-odl-lay-odl-lay-ee' which a couple of llamas nipping your backside. Very bossy!"
"That sounds like Mary-Lou," Hilda admitted. "Not the biting, the bossing."
"But you said TWO," Nell said. "We only lost one."
Marni shrugged. "Can't help that. They both bit. The little one seemed more enthusiastic, too. Don't know why."
"Do they look the same?" Hilda asked suddenly.
"Yes. Strange creatures. They're-"
"Purple with gold spots and three legs and blonde pigtails," the Heads chorused together.
"Yes. They must be yours, then. Coo-EEE!" and the Heads had to restrain themselves from clapping their hands to their ears.
A moment later a llama they recognised as Mary-Lou stepped forward, followed by a smaller one that made an immediate beeline for Hilda, much to that's lady's astonishment.
"It's almost as if it knows you," Nell wondered aloud.

Lisa/Vikki do you both have blue-grey eyes as in Miss Annersley's blue-grey eyes? That could raise interesting possiblities in this story!

I think that might be where Lisa was heading.

*g* Pretty much, but still not sure how. Although the colour of my eyes are irrelevant since I'm not in it, but I'm trying to think up a few Hilda/Vikki confrontations....

....to her surprise, the llama was quite amenable to being patted. Then Nell approached from where she had been trying to evade Mary-Lou's nips- evidently Mary-Lou the llama had an unforgiving disposition.
"It likes you!" she exclaimed in disbelief.
"You don't need to sound so surprised, Nell! People usually find me less scary than you."
"Except when you deliver lectures on responsibilities of course," Nell muttered sotto voce. The memory of that lecture still gave her the shivers. "Besides, that's not a person. That's a llama!"
Hilda gave her a pitying smile. "That's all *you* know," she retorted. "Llamas like these aren't real llamas. They're bewitched people- like Mary-Lou. But that was a mistake. I think this has been deliberately done, though," she mused.
"How do you work that out?" Nell asked sceptically.
"The eyes." And Hilda gently moved Vikki the Llama's head up so that her partner could see the creature's eyes.
Nell gawped. Then she looked at her friend. And back again.
"They're blue grey!" she gasped. "They're exactly like yours. Now, Hilda, is there something you haven't told me?"

Just realised that if Vikki is Hilda's daughter, that would give her the same powers as Hilda, meaning she might have turned herself into the llama! *g*

"Don't be ridiculous," Hilda snapped. "If you're implying what I think you're implying, Nell Wilson, I hate to think what your private reading and TV must constitute."
"Well, it can't be any worse than yours," Nell argued. "You've read both GWTW and Forever Amber despite forbidding the poor girls to read them. It's not every day you come across eyes like that!"
Hilda smirked. "No, you're right there," she admitted. "You see, blue-grey eyes are a sign. People with blue grey eyes have special powers."
"I have grey eyes," Nell said hopefully. "Doesn't that count?"
"No. Blue grey eyes are a sign of benign power. Bright blue is overwhelming, and black eyes- like Joey's- are just seriously disturbed. Poor girl."
"Well, if this llama that looks like you has power, how did she become a llama?" Nell demanded aggressively.
"I'd like to know that myself. Let's try and convert her, at least. I'd like to question her. Mary-Lou can stay as she is!" The Head picked up the tin foil wand, and warned by what had happened last time, Nell remained resolutely silent whilst Hilda said, as portentously as she could, "Supercalifragilisticexpaliadocious!" and a shower of sparks ejected from the wand. They hovered around both Vikki and Mary-Lou for a moment, before settling on Vikki.
There was a vivid flash, and Hilda and Nell opened their eyes to find themselves looking at a girl who was considerably shorter than they were, but with the same blue grey eyes that had riveted their attention earlier.
