Post by Carolyn P on Jan 15th, 2004, 10:21pm Madge and Ethelina had tickets back to the Gornetz Platz, but as they were already in transit, so to speak Madge decided to go back the long way round and check up on her daughters. The two were soon seated in a plane flying over the Pacific, Madge in first class of course and Ethelina in coach. The young girl was a little bored during the long flight and with no adult to tell her differently decided to do a little exploring. She was very careful to avoid the other passengers and to make short forays so that the stewardesses did not notice she was missing. She crawled down the aisle when most of the passengers in coach were watching the in flight movie, and finding some untied shoe laces decided to be helpful and retie them. The flight was a long one, but landed at last in Australia. Ethelina was directed through the airport and met Madge at customs. After a lengthy hold up the two were allowed into the country, but not before Madge had paid a hefty bribe to the customs officer. He had held out for a long while but had eventually given in and searched her, although he had drawn the line at what Madge euphemistically called a ‘full search’. As they passed out of the airport they noticed an ambulance drawn up at the side of the airplane they had recently arrived on. Further enquiry brought out two facts, firstly that they were extremely nosey and rude, and secondly that two passengers on the flight had died of thrombosis, brought on by not being able to move their legs for most of the flight, apparently their shoelaces had been knotted together that tightly that twenty five boy scouts had also perished in the attempt to untie them. “Oh, well,” sniffed Madge, “That is what comes of flying coach. They should have taken more care and booked first class seats.” Madge had not actually warned her daughters that she was coming but had an unerring instinct as to where to find them. She led Ethelina across Melbourne into some very unsavoury looking streets, and then into a bar. Ethelina looked around. There was a pool table with five balls, a broken cue and half a triangle. The bar had a number of overflowing ashtrays, and in one corner sat 4 women, half bent over a flickering screen and making odd noises under their breath. Ethelina crept forward and caught a sound coming from their lips, a half whisper, “yibble, yibble, yibble…” Madge took her by the shoulder and steered her away. At the other side of the room were two girls whom Madge briefly introduced as, “Sybil and Jossete, my daughters.” Ethelina sat quietly next to the Madge until the conversation grew so boring with Madge talking non stop about her family that she felt she had to creep away before she turned to stone. She was fascinated by the odd group on the other side of the room and crept nearer and nearer. The group were still muttering to themselves, and the one who appeared to be in charge was also typing non-stop. Her fingers flew faster and faster over the keyboard. “Hey KB, champion yibbler,” muttered one of the group in admiration. “Nonsense Adelheid, I don’t yibble, I contribute” muttered the leader, never ceasing to type. “Yibble, yibble, yibble,” went another member of the group. KB looked around sternly, “We Australians have a standard to uphold, come on Kirsty, Kathryn, you don’t want us all to branded as Emmy Hope’s do you?” Kb continued to type as Ethelina looked on fascinated. The group was still yibbling and now KB was typing so fast that smoke was beginning to seep from between her fingers. Ethelina stared at this, beginning to feel slightly afraid. She noticed that she was holding her breath and forced herself to let it out slowly as the first flame appeared. Still KB typed, even faster if that was possible, and the four figures kept their gaze fixed firmly on the screen. Madge was suddenly behind her. “Ethelina, please remember that not only is it rude to eavesdrop, but much worse, it is not the behaviour of a Chalet Girl. Now do come and bid farewell to the girls.” Ethelina went to do so and to her shock she saw that Sybil and Josette were sat stock still. She reached out her hand to shake theirs, but on touching them found that they were hard and cold. Stone in fact. Madge had bored them so much, that as Ethelina had feared they had turned to stone. Madge seemed not to notice and waved a cheery good-bye in their direction before leading Ethelina out of the door. When they reached the end of the block they young girl turned around with a sudden premonition and saw flames had enveloped the building and through the flames she could see four figures still sat around a small screen. Back at the Platz Matey was still suffering. Now almost completely toothless she was finding that she had a metallic taste in her mouth constantly. That however was nothing to the worrying fact that her nails were slowly dropping off and she was now covered in bruises. She had locked her door and no-one had seen her for almost a week. |

This time Madge had agreed to let Ethelina fly first class also, mainly die to the fact that Ethelina had produced from a pocket, with the air of a cunning conjuror, four purses stuffed full of Aussie cash. At Madge's raised eyebrow, Ethelina had apologetically told her Headmistress that she had liberated the cash from the four strange women in the bar. "Do you mean strange as in 'strangers' or as iin 'the most peculiar women you have ever had the misfortune to come across in your entire life'?" Madge queried. "Oh definitely the second one miss," squeaked Ethelina, all excited as she had now been given a speaking part which meant her fee would go up. "They were right peculiar weren't they miss?" Madge bestowed a dazzling smile on the little junior's example of impeccable good taste as taught by the CS and had even deigned to hold the child's hand as they walked the airport concourse. The flight home was uneventful, apart from one minor incident which all aboard the aircraft were completely ignorant. The pilot, for reasons best known to himself, decided to fly over Canada en route to Switzerland. As the plane was cruising over at 30,000 feet, Ethelina decided she really needed a wee. As this was the first wee she had gone for since starting at the CS, it was a long wee. She sat and pee'ed as no girl had ever pee'ed before. When she was finally done, the plane was still over Canada. Ethelina pulled the flush, and the waste did what all good waste does upon being flushed on an airplane. It froze into a solid block which fell to earth, crashing into a certain house where a girl called Chelsea was sitting typing at her computer and trying to find out what had happened to KB, or the Aussie Yibbler as she was generally known in PMs. The block of frozen wee decimated the house, the computer and Chelsea, who in an ironical twist of fate was known as "Crashbb" - forever more she would be remembered affectionately as "Crashweewee". The block of frozen wee had further repercussions for the town in which Chelsea lived. It set off reverberations that reverberated as only reverberations can, triggering an almighty earthquake. Neverbefore had the residents of this area considered themselves to be at risk of earthquakes, but they had one now. The earth trembled, it quaked and split. Out of the gaping crevasses caused by the earthquake, lava spewed forth, overwhelming the town, the province and finally the whole country. Canada was wiped out by one block of wee. The plane eventually landed in Switzerland and Madge and Ethelina made their way back to the Platz, chatting amicably together about their adventures. They arrived near to their home to find, by a curious twist of time zones, that they had landed the day before they left. This led to much confusion, so Madge and Ethelina took themselves off to stay in a Pension for the night, where they had a splendid evening eating too much food, staying up too late and finally tumbling into bed an hour before breakfast time. The floowing day, making sure that time-wise Rosalie would already have been contacted to send the airfares to Vermont, they sauntered along the Platz and entered the school half an hour after Rosalie had received the phone call. "Oh there you are Madge. The post is on your desk, there are three phone calls from the police, seventy three calls from parents and a telegram from the Queen. Oh, and Matilda wants to see you. Bill Wilson said she shouldn't but you know what Matilda is like by now," smiled Rosalie "Don't I just!" groaned Madge hurling herself into her chair. "Rosalie, I want you to buy an answering machine for the telephone and then just leave it on. I can't be bothered with answering calls from parents all the time. After all, we are in loco parentis, so it's up to us to decide what is best for the girls. And file the post inthe cylindrical filing cannister would you?" Rosalie chucked the post in the bin and made her way to the door. "Oh! I nearly forgot!" she said. "Karen has resigned. Apparently her and Anna are setting up home on the platz and have offered to adopt Ethelina." Ethelina squeaked in dismay - she recognised this for what it was. In a bid to avoid paying her any more repeat appearance fees, she was to be sidelined. "I wont go!" she declared dramatically. Rosalie cuffed her round the head. "You'll do as you're told and stay silent. Do you think we're made of money? Stop talking!" Ethelina muttered under her breath, but Rosalie clamped a hand firmly over the childs mouth so no actual words could be heard and dragged her out of Madge's office and handed her over to Anna and Karen who wept with joy over their "baby". MEANWHILE Matey fell out of bed and broke her nose. This resulted in lots of blood and snot mingling in a big dribble down her face. |

Madge left the office and made way to the study for the expected traumatic interview with Matilda. Having dealt with Matilda she left fifteen minutes later white and shacking and in search of Matey. “Rosalie, just where is Matey, I can’t find her anywhere.” “Oh, she’s locked herself in her room and won’t answer the door,” replied Rosalie airly. Madge sighed, “Is she still sulking over Jack Maynard. Silly old biddy. In her absence do you think you could find me some painkillers please.” “Here you are, I know what effect Matilda has and got these ready.” “You are wonderful, thanks ever so.” Madge took the two tablets and then bending down to the table picked up the teapot that was standing on the tray. She turned it over in her hands a few times before flinging it out of the window. Rosalie didn’t raise an eyebrow. The school knowing of this idiosyncrasy had a good supply of cheap teapots, and a special relationship with a crockery shop. The seniors were not happy at having no middles and juniors to boss around. Anna and Karen were home tutoring Ethelina now so this left just the solitary new middle. She was ignored the older girls completely, spending most of her time writing lists and putting ticks on her pictures of Christmas tree fairies. Tonight was different though. She turned up in the senior common room. “What are you doing here?” “Miss Dene said I had to come here as they couldn’t heat the middles room just for me. I’m to join you in lessons as well.” This produced a stunned silence followed by an indignant outcry, which the middle used to sneak in and take the best seat by the stove. The seniors congregated at the other end of the room, and in whispers plotted how they would get rid of this interloper. Various ideas were put forward, but none seemed to quite meet the bill. The middle was to all intents and purposes reading quietly by the stove, her back turned to the assembled seniors. A bell rang and she rose from her chair, stumbling towards the wall as she did. One of the seniors laughed, but the middle smiled and said, “Goodnight, oh, and please don’t sit on my chair. I have no wish to catch senior germs.” With this she left the room. “Cheeky brat. I’m not letting her dictate to me like that,” said one Jocelyn Marvel and stalked across the room to the chair. She sat down. Nothing happened. She wriggled. “Well, what are you all staring at? You didn’t think that one middle could,” and at this point she broke off, rigid as the electricity flowed through her. Hair on end, shaking and finally dead. Chaos broke out as the girls tried to pull her off the chair and one by one dropped dead, as they too became part of the circuit the middle had designed to protect her chair. It was only after ten bodies had frizzled that one bright spark remembered their science lessons and stopped anyone else touching the bodies. They could now see the wires leading to the plug that the middle had switched on as she stumbled and using a broom handle Gwen Thomas switched it off. The middle, who had been watching the fun through the keyhole giggled and ran off to add ten more manes to the list on the back of her fairy photo. Matey rolled over, the congealed blood and snot from her nose now mixing with the pus that weeping from the scabs and sores on the back of her head where Joey had shaved it. The floor was awash with gunk, but she was now unable to smell it as her nose had fallen off. |

Scanning all the paperwork on her desk, Madge realised there was one very simple way of saving money. After placing several phone calls, Madge shouted for Rosalie to come through. "Rosalie, the school is moving!" Madge announced happily. "Not again! Where to this time?" grumbled Rosalie. "Back to blighty my dear," said Madge. "The Chalet School is to be reunited! England and Switzerland will no longer have a branch each - we will be one entire school again!" "Funny how you always refer to the "English" branch when it's actually located in Wales," mused Rosalie. Madge laughed. "Oh you funny little thing! Did you never learn Geography Chalet School style? Everyone knows Wales is a funny town to the west of England, just as Scotland is that peculiar village up north somewhere - although Scotland might actually just be an urban myth!" "Look Madge, what do you want me to do? I know you are about to fling yet another huge workload on my already overburdened shoulders, so cut to the chase and tell me the worst why don't you?" "Ok," agreed Madge amicably. "I'm flying back to England with all the pupils, you and the staff can follow once you have packed everything worth keeping in the school, arranged a garage sale for all the crap we don't need, sacked half the staff, made redundant another quarter, asked for the resignations of a few more and perhaps see if some of the staff wouldn't like to try for jobs over at that other school which I can never remember the name of - you know the one, further along the Platz?" "So basically, you're legging it and there wont be room for any of the rest of us? Is that what you're telling me?" asked Rosalie. "Well, I wouldn't have put it so bluntly, but yes. That's exactly what I'm telling you. If you can raise enough at the garage sale to pay your way back to England, you can have a job at the Chalet School." "Your generosity overwhelms me Madge," began Rosalie in her most sarcastic voice. Sarcasm was however wasted on Madge who had developed an extremely thick skin over the years so that she took everything in the most literal sense possible. "Thankyou Rosalie. That will be all. The girls and I will leave tomorrow." "And Matilda?" asked Rosalie maliciously. Madge paled and began to tremble slightly. She took a quick swig from the trusty hip flask and stared at Rosalie. "I suppose Matilda will have to return to England too. But I'm not happy about it!" Madge snapped. Rosalie smirked and went off to swipe the remainder of the petty cash. The following day saw Madge at the airport with the 94 girls left of the Swiss branch. Anna and Karen had been given the option of sending Ethelina back to England, but had declared themselves delighted with their baby and keen to continue with their current arrangements. The flight number was called, and Madge led her party of schoolgirls aboard, after only a slight delay while security put out an announcement for the solitary middle to make ehr way to the boarding gate. She scurried up to Madge with an angelic smile, which Madge instantly recognised for what it was; an angelic child delighted to be in the company of her Headmistress. The flight was uneventful, and as soon as they landed, they made their way out of the terminal and boarded the school coaches which had been sent from Carnbach that morning to bring the girls home. |

Post by Rachel on Jan 18th, 2004, 8:34pm The driver had the radio playing, and as they made their way through the towns and cities on the route to the CS, they heard the appalling news of how sixteen flights out of Switzerland had all crashed within an hour of each other. The disaster wsa laid firmly at the door of the air traffic controller in charge of incoming flights, who had been found drunk and gibbering in a small cupboard, and weeping tears of gratitude when informed he would never work there again. Later studies were to show that he had an incurable fear of small girls, and had happened to come across one that morning which had triggered the extreme reaction. His medical notes showed no such phobia, and his wife (and mother of nine girls) said she had never known about such a phobia either, but as the medical experts were all agreed, such an irrational fear MUST have been long standing but deeply buried. The arrival at the CS was marred by only one incident. As the girls were disembarking from the coaches, the little middle stumbled and almost fell, but saved hgerself by putting out her arms. Unfortunately this had the dreadful result of pushing three senior girls into the path of one of the empty coaches, wherupon they pronounced "dead beyond the recall of 'The red Sarafan'" A teribble homecoming, but madge was certain things could only get better. MEANWHILE Back in Switzerland, Rosalie had carried out Madge's plans, but with a little addition of her own. After clearing the buildings anf flogging everything that would raise a penny, she torched the buildings in order to claim the insurance money. naturally she had forgotten Matey was still in there as she skipped off into the night to await the phone call from the fire brigade. Matey, seeing smoke curling under her door, had flung herself out of the window. This resulted in both her legs dropping off. |
