Title: Chalet School Holocaust (post advent drabble)
Post by Carolyn P on Jan 6th, 2004, 8:39pm
Since you all seem to have missed this one when the TEM ate it, Rachel and I after a lot of confering have decided to post it yet again.

We have also decided to post as originally written, in installments so that the TEM won't have spoiled the enjoyment of waiting for the next part.

Here is the first part that I wrote. Rachel's part to follow at her discretion.

Madge regarded her feet with some satisfaction before jumping down off the table, the new shoes were so shiny that she could see her face reflected in the toes and they made such a satisfying noise. “I must concentrate,” she thought, “I wonder how Hilda managed to deal with all of this correspondence, there is just so much of it, and these parents will whinge about anything.” She slid another pile into the ‘Rosalie to write a standard reply’  tray and with a slight twinge of guilt went off to seek out Matey.

Rosalie watched her leave with a grim look. She knew what had been happening at the school over the years and was now fearful that Madge might try to change things, loosing the secure financial footing that Hilda and Jem had placed the school on. Rosalie didn’t mind that too much, but as secretary she had been able to ‘cream off’ quite a lot and was looking forward to her luxurious retirement. ‘Madge had better not interfere with my plans’ was her constant mantra since Hilda’s unfortunate demise.

The school as a whole were not aware what had happened that day, the day that Loveday, an old Head girl had killed Jem and Hilda and seriously wounded Jack. All they knew was that the two were dead and many of them had put it down to food poisoning caused by Joey’s cooking, Anna having been absent from Freudesheim on the fateful day. Anna had overheard the girls talking one day and come to the conclusion that she had been blamed by Joey for the deaths. Unable to face her mistress after hearing this she had packed her bags and fled to the only place she think of to seek refuge. The school kitchens where Karen welcomed her with open arms.

Term had restarted a few weeks earlier with Madge reviving her role as Headmistress and finally beginning to enjoy life, or at least she would have been if Joey had not been living next door.
“How did Hilda put up with her continual interference?” she moaned to Bill one day.
“Hilda made it a rule never to see Joey unless at least one of them was under the influence of drink or drugs.”
“That’s all very well, but how can I keep enough alcohol around when staff are in and out of the study continually.”
Bill laughed, “So you haven’t discovered Hilda’s secret haul yet.” Saying this she moved the picture of the original chalet by the Tiernsee to show a secret safe in the wall, a stash of brandy, baileys and cheap wine.

There had been the normal influx of new girls, most of whom knew neither French nor German, and one in particular stood out to the staff. She appeared to have died hair, although they presumed it wasn’t, she also walked with a limp which they were too good mannered to mention, although the more observant staff did wonder why the limp occasionally changed sides. This girl also appeared to be extremely shy, after three weeks no-one had heard her speak more than a couple of words, and those in a squeak. The strangest thing was that she had only two photographs in her cubicle, both of Christmas tree fairies.

Talking of his acting skills....(I'm very sorry Rachel) has anyone watched one of the outtakes bits of pirates? (we were very, very bored, and waiting for lunch to be cooked). He keeps stopping and saying, 'Oh dear, I forgot!'/'Oh, was that me?!' However, Johnny Depp was still very cool.  ::)

Shall I let you in on a really embarrassing secret?

Last night, after the wonderful <koff> posts from Orlando on my profile thread, I went to bed and couldn't get to sleep - and instead of counting sheep, I mentally wrote him a fan letter!

Oh my god, why am I telling you all this? As if your opinions of me could sink any lower!

Anyway, when I did eventually get to sleep - I dreamed about him! And then the blasted alarm went off and broke the dream and it was a fabulous dream!

Why did I start telling this story? Oh yes, I remember now! I think OB is very attractive (no, really!), I like the films I have seen him in so far, I do think he is a talented actor, he knows what it's like to have nasty injuries and broken bones, he's an animal lover, and he is less than two years younger than me which puts him very frimly in my "eligible" category! And I am NOT a teeny-bopper at all!

One afternoon, still near the beginning of term, Madge decided the time had come. She had on her shiny shoes, she pulled on a spiffing short skirt and made her way slowly towards the small chapel in the grounds of the school. Arriving there, she made her towards the rear, where the small cemetery could be found.

Madge stood over Jem’s grave, and read the inscription on the stone:

“James Russell. Beloved husband of Margaret, father of David, Sybil, Josette, Ailie, Kester, Kevin and Matilda. Rest In Peace.”

A cynical smile crossed Madge’s pretty mouth. “Beloved husband my backside!” she scoffed. The only reason Madge had allowed those words to be inscribed by the stone mason was for little Matilda’s benefit. Madge read the words once more before stepping daintily onto the stone covering of the grave and tap-dancing.

Back at the school, the pupils were all assembled in the Speisesaal, waiting for their Abendessen. For some reason, despite the gong sounding and everyone sitting and waiting for the meal to begin, no food was appearing from the direction of the kitchens. Eventually Rosalie Dene had had enough and stood up. “I’m going to see where our meal is!” she announced before marching from the room to the kitchens. She was totally unprepared for the sight that met her eyes. Anna and Karen were sitting together on a small rug in front of a large photograph of an open fire. They appeared to be either whispering sweet nothings in each others ears or else conducting the quietest and most mannerly of arguments ever seen.

“Well!” snapped Rosalie before spinning on her heel and leaving the room.
“Abendessen will be delayed this evening,” she announced back in the Speisesaal. “If any of you wish to eat, might I suggest you all head over to the Dommy. Sci, kitchens and start cooking. Dismissed!”

The results of this command were to be far reaching. The Dommy. Sci kitchen had only ever been intended for school girls to learn in, and although theoretically, the food they produced there was consumed by the school, for years the school had had yet another profitable side line running offering cheap pig food to local farms. The prefects immediately took charge, issuing orders that were followed to the letter. As everyone agreed at the inquest, they had only had themselves to blame.

Ingredients were limited in number, and the prefects spotted immediately the flaw in Miss Dene’s instructions to feed themselves tonight. Calculating rapidly, the eldest girls realised there would only be sufficient food for 20 – otherwise calculated at the body of prefects plus two. Swiftly ordering the younger girls around, plates of “food” arrived in front of the prefect in short order and they organised a round of progressive games to determine who the other two to be fed should be. (Fortunately for the remainder of the school, those games being of a circular nature, nobody could ever work out who had actually “won”!)

Within minutes of starting to eat, the prefects were dropping like flies, lying on the ground, groaning in agony and vomiting spectacularly. The younger girls watched in admiration at first, but then some bright spark had the idea of compounding the prefects troubles by fetching Matey.

After one swift glance, Matey forbade anyone else from touching the half finished plates of Abendessen and using the inter-school telephone, called for assistance. The prees were removed to the san, and the remaining members of the school were dispatched to their common rooms for the rest of the evening, bearing away an apple and a dry slice of bread each.

Tut tut Vikki and Pat, such impatience. Still my mind is spinning with my college work and I don't think I can do any more tonight. I have taken out around 1000 words and still have another 300 to go, and my tutor doesn't want me to loose any content!! I'm that desparate I've even included doesn't instaed of does not!!! So, just for your delight here goes my short little part...

The middles had complained about their scanty meal, but no-one took any notice being far more concerned with the prefects. The matter was turning very serious; it appeared that one of the middles had mistakenly emptied a packet of rat poison into the vat containing soup. No-one knew who it had been, but the strange new girl was seen later that night putting a tick on the back of one of her photographs.

For two whole days the San was knee deep in vomit and then the unspeakable happened. Matey had been scratching her head wondering what sustenance she could offer to the invalids, and although the flakes she produced were plentiful, even Matey thought that they were not quite the right thing. Then her eyes lit on a tube in her bedside drawer. Later that morning the prefects were all given bowls of jelly. Rather strange tasting jelly (so I’m told) but jelly nevertheless. They ate it, finding some degree of comfort in the cool slippery gel that lubricated their lips and throats as they swallowed it. However it was to no avail, the Head girl, Erica Standish passed away that night with a loud shriek of pain, and over the next few days the rest of the prefects died in varying degrees of agony. Matey disposed of the bodies in her usual way, regretting the needless loss. “If only I had known I could have kept my terms supply of KY, they didn’t gain anything by it.”

It was after the deaths that Jack decided he ought to visit the school; Erica had been Joey’s ward after all. He entered the study one morning to find it empty. After helping himself to a drink he went to the staff room and joined Nancy and Kathie in a short game of ‘find the lady’. Once satiated he finally tracked down Matey and Madge in the san, unaware that he had just been the unwitting cause of the eventual demise of the schools two best loved teachers.

It made me feel rather sick, and I don't think anything like it has appeared on the board before, but the story has to be told doesn't it?

Footnotes and appendices don't count, but I don't really have any more I can shove there, still only 300 over now and I think if I get rid of another 200 that will probably fool them enough. Then I have to scan some pictures and get it all together. Roll on the end of the weekend when this is finished, the party is over, the visit made and I can get on with the story that the bunnies have been nagging me about.

After a lot of thought, no, I don't think they are - so they can have this bit instead.

******************************************************

Jack sauntered merrily into the San, slapping Matey on the backside in passing. Matey blushed up and waggled her finger at him in mock admonishment, but secretly her heart leaped that Jack still found her attractive. Madge glared at Jack and pulled him to one side of the room, the side furthest from the heap of stinking corpses.

“Hola Madge!” he said cheerfully, twirling a strand of her hair around one finger. “Mmmmmmm, smells like coconuts too!” he added, smelling her hair. Madge groaned. For years, Joey had been complaining about her husband’s hair fetish, which Madge had thought was an excuse for Joey to keep her old fashioned hairstyle despite everyone ridiculing her, but it seemed that Joey’s complaints had been based on facts.
“Leave it alone Jack,” murmured Madge, attempting to show respect for the dead, but Jack refused to be deflected.
“How about we slip off somewhere together Madge,” he said in the low tones he had learned over the years would carry less than a whisper. “My study is usually free round about now,” he added suggestively.
“How about we don’t?” asked Madge sweetly.
“Madge, baby, you’re breaking my heart!” declared Jack, still playing with a strand of her hair.

For a minute, perhaps two, Madge resisted, but it was Matey who swung her decision. Matey was observing the pair, her face even more sour than usual, and totally subconsciously she was making throttling actions with her hands. Seeing this, Madge smiled to herself and jumped.

Jack was caught only slightly unawares. He was used by now to females throwing themselves at him, literally and figuratively, and for many years he had been running a profitable side business to the San and entertaining lonely ladies. He felt it to be part of his duties as a caring member of the community, and the cash was always useful.

As Jack tried to walk from the room with Madge in his arms, Matey’s voice cut across his path.
“And what of you ward, young Erica?” she asked bitterly, knowing that she was no longer jack’s only girl.
“Oh, send her over to Freudesheim later on would you?” Jack asked, gazing deep into Madge’s eyes.

Madge felt herself to be drowning in emotion as Jack gazed down at her with an intensity she had only ever dreamed of before. Jack carried her over to Freudesheim, past a resigned Joey, and into his study. He laid her down on to the once red velvet couch, now a purple leather sofa, and stroked her face gently.
“Obviously I’ll give you family discount rates,” he murmured as he helped her to undo her buttons.
Madge reached into her pocket. “Do you take cheques?”

MEANWHILE

The middles were revolting, in all senses of the word. With a complete lack of prefects, anarchy reigned supreme in the school. Kathie and Nancy were endeavoring to regain control of the science lab and library, but a terrible burning itch was keeping them distracted.

Just so you will let me sleep easy tonight...

Here are a few more deaths.

The middles were revolting in more ways than one. Matey had been rather taken up with the prefects demise and had not overseen the usual cold baths and clean clothes. As a result none of the middles had washed or changed in almost a month. The smell was beginning to become visible and on entering the third form classroom one morning Miss Bertram coughed, gulped, and became the first death in a drabble caused by a bad smell.

This was not the end of the matter. Realising that they may be blamed for this unfortunate accident the middles decided to hide the body and after failing to fit the mistress in the stationary cupboard dragged her down to the cellar where they his her behind a pile of coke intended for the boiler. The shock of finding his daughter dead and hidden proved too much for Gaundez and his faulty heart finally gave out. Gaundez and his daughter Joan were finally united in death, especially when the bodies began to decompose and merge together.

Jack deciding that the smells at the school were due to the old problem of faulty drains immediately started looking for a new home for the school. In order to take full advantage of the fresh mountain air he and Joey went to examine a chalet on a higher shelf, the Rosinalpe. They were very pleased with the chalet, and the tennis courts that were set conveniently near the edge of the alp. Joey and Jack decided that a game would be fun and having found some racquets that a forgetful earlier occupant of the chalet had left lying around began to play. Joey was proving that age had not lessened her aim, or her powers and she was determined to beat Jack. She slammed her balls back towards him, and he, never willing to let her win returned each of them, until that last ball. The one that would have been out if only he had left it. The one that flew over the line, over the flowers and finally over the edge of the alp. Jack stretching to return it, followed.

Sorry guys, I've been *busy* ;)  - no, not *that* kind of busy!!
**************************************

Matey.

Was.

Furious.

Not only had Madge Russell swept her beloved off for a night or ten of passion, but now that blasted Joey Maynard had managed to kill him. The time had come for revenge. Matey was not one to act in a hasty manner though, so she made a few preparations and was prepared to bide her time.

This was fortunate as the day after poor Jack’s tragic accident, Nancy and Kathie had had to give in and go to Matey about the horrendous burning itchiness they were both suffering from. Much to their embarrassment, Matey insisted that she would be unable to help without seeing exactly what the problem was, so both women had to undergo an examination. This was not made any better by Matey pulling on a rubber glove that covered her arm all the way to the shoulder and whipping out a can of axle grease “for lubrication purposes”.

The two women began arguing over who should go first. Kathie’s argument of “age before beauty” was answered by Nancy’s “Pearls before swine? Oh no dear! You know the rules – women and children first! I insist!”

Matey stood with her eyes narrowing. “I haven’t all day to waste you know! If you want treatment, I have to know what I’m dealing with! Nancy, on the couch, now!”

Nancy, muttering under her breath the whole time climbed up on to the couch, throwing Kathie dirty looks the whole time. Kathie watched incredulously at first until the sight was too much for her. With a feeble whimper she fell to the floor, still, grey and very, very dead.

Nancy saw her beloved fall to the ground and leaped from the examining couch, determined to do what she could. Unfortunately, she forgot that she still had her combinations wrapped around her ankles, and tripped over them, sprawling head first into Matey’s free standing equipment cupboard. The cupboard swayed as Nancy’s full weight piled into it, and the tin of axle grease (which had been balanced precariously on top of Matey’s bulk pack of rubber aprons {don’t ask!} up until this point) slowly tumbled off the unit and landed smack bang on Nancy’s temple, instantly reuniting her with Kathie in heaven (where they met up with Jack Maynard and proceeded to berate him for his inadequate services, whereupon he instantly offered his company as compensation for the rest of eternity. They agreed).

Matey was now left with the problem of how to get rid of yet more bodies. She was still struggling to shift the stinking remains of the prefects rotting corpses, and was disgusted at the thought of adding to the number rather than reducing it. This is turn led to a cunning and most bold plan.

Matey procured two large cardboard boxes, placed a corpse in each, stapled it shut, wrapped it in ultra strong sticky tape, tied it firmly with string, and stuck on address labels. (The addresses were creatively made up ones {in Peru and Botswana} where the parcels were received with much prayerful thanks and each fed a family of 27 and 39 respectively for over a month).

This now left Matey free and clear to begin exacting revenge on Josephine.

Joey had great plans for her bounty insurance money. After spending approximately three quarters of it on drink, drink and a little more drink, Joey spent the rest converting Freudesheim into a hairdressing salon – as a tribute to jack’s hair fetish. Joey hoped the salon would be a success, but decided as long as she made enough drinking money each day (and how much does a bottle of turps cost after all?) she would be happy. Much to her delight, Matey booked herself in as the first customer.

OK, Jem and Hilda died at the end of the advent drabbles. Jack fell to his death playing tennis, Joan Bertran died of a bad smell and her father, Gaundez's heart gave out when he found her body. The prefects have all died of food poisoning. Kathie and Nancy caught an itch and died in Matey's room under circumstances best not repeated to anyone of a nervous disposition.
There is a mysterious new girl with two photographs of christmas tree fairies who is placing ticks on the back of them. There is also Matilda, who appeared on Jem's gravestone.

Now for the next episode, and yes, I have been away for a couple of day's, my Nephews dedication.

Matey and Joey looked at each other and then Joey invited Matey to have a seat whilst Anna made some coffee.
“This is an interesting idea Joey,” commented Matey, her eyes narrowing as she thought of the events that had led up to Joey setting up the salon.
Joey knew full well of Matey’s crush on Jack, and knew how her husband had laughed at the idea of being attracted to a woman with so little hair. She ran a brush through Matey’s hair, noticing the sparseness of the thin white hair and taking care to pull on all the knots she encountered. Matey winced but remained silent, determined that only one of them would leave the room alive, and determined that it would be her.
Anna brought the coffee and departed leaving the two women to make the sort of conversation that is only ever held in hairdressing salons. Topics ranged from holidays to the weekend, and back again to holidays before silence fell. Joey had washed Matey’s hair and was now attempting to cut the back of it with a razor. An old razor, one of Jacks to be precise that Joey had found dropped behind the drawers in Jacks dressing room when she threw out his things. She had thrown the razor into the bin at first, but then fished it out, realising that it may come in useful for her salon. True, the blade was a little blunt, but the flaky orange colour was so funky that Jo couldn’t resist using it.

By the time that Joey pronounced Matey finished she had received quite a few nicks and cuts to the back of her head, and whilst the front had been put in curlers and looked as it always did, the back had been hacked until there was even less hair that usual there and what remained was now in bloodstained clumps. Matey rose and turning quickly caught Joey off guard, the cloak that had been wrapped round Matey was now entangled around Joey’s arms, and the peroxide that Joey had recently died her hair with was being inexorably down her throat. Matey was small, but wiry and well used to giving medication to unwilling victims. Joey was held until the full bottle had been swallowed and then released, only to drop to the floor as Matey kicked her venomously and bent down to whisper in her ear, “That’s for Jack’ death, and this, this is for all the years you have kept him for me.” With these words she produced a bottle of white spirit from her pocket, poured it over Joey and dropped a lighted down on the doomed woman. Then she left the room, closing the door and unknowingly taking septicaemia with her.

Over at the school Chaos reigned. Madge had no idea how to run a large school, and whilst Bill was happy enough to give her a little advice, she had her hands full at St Mildreds where an unusual number of girls had taken an interest in chemistry and physics. As senior science teacher she was pleased at this turn of events, she had long help that science was undervalued at the school, but some of the students were a little too enthusiastic for her tastes, and she had to keep reminding them that science was not all smells and bangs. There also appeared to be some unauthorised use of the labs, even though she held the only key, and she still had not unearthed the solution to that mystery.

The new girl heard of Joey’s death and placed another tick on the back of her fairy photographs. The list was slowly growing and she gave a satisfied nod as she took out a notepad and added an addendum to her latest report.

That's been missing for ages! Haven't you noticed? And besides, I can't help it if people dissolve into tears at the first opportunity!
