Title: CS and the Emersons
Post by Lisa_T on Dec 20th, 2003, 2:50am
OK, this is taking up archaeologist from where it was when the TEM struck. Please ignore any inconsistencies with the original- I haven't got it either! ;D
**********************

Elisaveta shut the study door behind her and turned to smile at the new girl.
"Did Miss Annersley say you're to be in the Sixth?" she queried in her pretty voice.
Charla nodded. "Yes. I suppose there was nowhere else they could put me. I spent some of last year at Oxford."
Elisaveta stopped dead and gasped. "You did? But how come? How old are you?"
"Seventeen. How old are you?"
"Nearly sixteen," the Princess returned with a slight frown. This coming summer would see her formal investiture and she wasn't looking forward to it.
"You're two years younger than I, then. What's it like here?" Charla asked, looking casually around her as they made their way towards the Prefect's Room.
"Oh it's jolly!" Elisaveta told her enthusiastically. "But I'd never been to school before I came here. I suppore you were, though?"
Charla's face, which could look stern in repose, split in a wide grin. "Definitely not. My grandfather thinks they're a cursed nuisance and a bad influence and won't let any of the family go to one."
Elisaveta took on the princess dignity she could assume at the drop of a hat. "I think you'll find you won't be allowed to say 'cursed' here," she pointed out, ignoring the rest of Charla's statement.
"Damnation!" ejaculated Charla, wickedly, enjoying the look of horror on the younger girl's face. Whilst she was used to hearing a variety of expletives, she did not usually use them with such abandon, as Amelia kept a close and strict eye on her granddaughter's language, although she was the first to admit that the attempt was a futile one, more often than not.
Elisaveta stopped outside a door. "This is the Prefects' Room," she said coldly, and rapped on the door.
A clear, sweet voice told them to enter, and she ushered the new girl in.
"What's up, Veta?" asked a tall girl who had been in the hall earlier.
"Miss Annersley has requested of me that I bring Charla Emerson to you here, Jo," Elisaveta told her formally. "She is to be in the Sixth."
Jo's eyebrows rose as the very regal language. "I see," she said briefly, nodding at Charla. "Frieda, will you take Charla to the others? Did the Abbess say which dormy she was to be in, 'Veta?"
The Princess nodded. "Green, I think."
Jo rolled her eyes expressively at the ceiling. "OK. Ta. Hi! Wait a minute!" for on seeing the fair haired Second Prefect disappear with her charge, Elisaveta had turned to go.
"What's the matter?" she demanded. She had prep to do and wanted to get on with it.
"Nothing. What's eating you, though? You talked as though you'd swallowed every royal proclamation in the book!"
Elisaveta shook her head. "It was nothing, Jo," she said, and refused to be drawn further. The Head Girl looked at her keenly, but on seeing her determination, said no more. Elisaveta vanished and Joey ruminated for a moment. "It strikes me we could have fireworks with this Charla person!" she thought as she tried to do something with her French essay. "'Veta is happy go lucky enough as a rule. Charla must have annoyed her a good deal. I wonder what happened?"

It was not long before Charla and the Head Girl had a confrontation. In their own ways, both had a great deal of self confidence, and a conflict was inevitable.
Charla was reading one of the Egyptology books she had smuggled into the school. It was in fact a volume of her grandfather's monumental 'History of Ancient Egypt' and Charla was deep in a discussion on the gods of Ancient Egypt, when she felt a tap on her arm. She came reluctantly to the surface.
"What?" she asked, rather crossly.
"I came to- I say!" Jo's eyes grew round as she took in the book and the illustrations. "I'm sure you shouldn't be reading that," she said doubtfully.
Charla's dark eyes began to flash. "Why not, pray?"
"It looks a little- well, too much for schoolgirls, don't you think? We don't do ancient or classical history here either, worse luck, so you've not a leg to stand on."
Charla looked irritatingly superior. "It probably is too much for schoolgirls," she agreed with a calm air that was decidedly annoying. "But I'm not a schoolgirl."
Joey looked her up and down. "You're not? Well, what are you then? A visiting professor?" The last question was posed with a sarcastic edge, but Charla remained unruffled.
"Not quite. That's my grandfather. And my great-uncle. And my father. My mother's a surgeon. My uncle's a well known sculptor and Egyptologist. My-"
Joey waved an impatient hand. "Yes, yes, I get the idea. Dry up, do! I asked about you, not your family!"
Charla looked at her seriously. "I'm a competent excavator, with all that entails. In addition, I'm an excellent linguist, and am frequently involved in the translation and decipherment of the ancient heiratic, demotic, and heiroglyphic texts."
Joey gasped from shock, and her response was inadvertently rude. "Rot!" she said decidedly. "You're not much older than I am. How can you be all that?"

Charla had inherited a hot temper from her mother and both her grandparents, although her grandmother would have unquestionably have denied possessing any such attribute. Her eyes flickered dangerously, and she put Volume III of the 'History' carefully on the table before turning to the other girl.
"You don't know what you're talking about," she said, quietly contemptuous. "I'm from an Egyptological family. I was reading the heiroglyphs when I wasn't much more than a baby. In my family, age hasn't much to do with it."
"Maybe, but your education hasn't much else to recommend it!" the Head Girl snapped. She was in a thoroughly bad mood that day, having wakened with more than a twinge in her tooth, and she had a horror of the dentist.
"You know nothing about my education!" Charla flared. "It's porbably been a cursed sight better than yours, if this school is anything to go by!"
Jo choked with rage. "How dare you! My sister started the Chalet five years ago and it's doing splendid work! We're not all eccentrics, you know!"
Most provokingly, Charla laughed. "Eccentric? Is that the worst you can think of, you-" she broke off into a stream of gutter Arabic that would have horrified her grandmother and vaguely amused her grandfather. Roughly translated, she had just called Joey the deformed daughter of a camel.
Joey could not understand what had been said, naturally, and the combination of linguistic frustration and sheer fury got the better of her. With a strangled sound, she forgot her Head-Girl ship and flung herself bodily on the other girl, knocking them both to the ground.

Oh, boy, the reaction to this should be interesting! I hope there was a mistress around to see it, because if Charla carries tales to the mistresses, she will have a tough time of it!

"Josephine!" came a quiet voice from the doorway, and both girls turned- rather guiltily- to see Miss Annersley looking at them, with her face at its most grim.
Charla got to her feet in a hurry, having looked at the lady's eyes and been unpleasantly reminded of her grandmother. Joey, who knew as Charla did not what the normally gentle senior mistress could be like in such a situation, did likewise and shook in her shoes.
Miss Annersley (oh dear, it's so difficult to remember not to say 'the Head'-  maybe I could bump Mlle off earlier? ;D) looked both girls up and down.
"I am sorry to see that girls in the Sixth can behave in so disgraceful a manner," she told them frostily. "What kind of example does this set to the younger ones, I wonder? I'm inclined to think that they would scorn to behave as you have done. Perhaps we should give Robin the Head Girlship, Josephine?" She paused there and both girls turned a deep crimson. After another moment of silence, Miss Annersley spoke again, and her tones were rather different.
"I'm particularly sorry that it should be you two who have fallen out so badly, as very shortly the pair of you will need to combine your talents to solve a difficulty that has come up. In the meantime, go to my room and wait for me there. I do not wish to disturb Mademoiselle with such a sorry tale."
Both girls' faces flamed again, and they looked very sorry for themselves as they slunk out of the room. Hilda Annersley followed them with a rather grim smile. The girls really would have to get over their animosity, or they would never solve the latest problem.

Patience, people, patience! ;D ::)
****************
Meanwhile, the senior Emersons had made an impulsive decision to go to Switzerland before proceeding to Marseilles for the boat to Alexandria.
“But I want to get to my excavations!” wailed Emerson, who was as vigorous as ever.
Amelia sniffed. “Forget your excavations for the moment, please!” she snapped. “We have more urgent matters to consider. I hope,” she began as Emerson opened his mouth to argue, “that you are not going to say that your desires come before the safety of a young girl and several others?”
Emerson closed his mouth with an audible crack and turned blazing eyes to his wife, who remained infuriatingly calm. “Curse it! Why must you always do this?” he bellowed. “You just cannot refrain from interfering, can you? All I want to do is to get on with my excavations. Why must I be denied year after year?”
“Really, Emerson! That is most unfair. Nothing happened last year, or the year before that. Or maybe that was the year that Davy demonstrated the disgraceful ease with which it was possible to lift some of the most precious objects from Tutankhamen’s tomb out of the Cairo Museum.”
*It was three years ago,” Emerson corrected, his brow clearing. He gave an involuntary grin. “Evidently our grandson has inherited his father’s talents, my dear!”
“His great uncle’s too,” Amelia agreed ruefully. “But this is all beside the point, Emerson. I have the most-“
“Amelia!” screamed Emerson, his voice becoming falsetto with rage. “You are not to say it! I forbid you to say it!”
“Worrying premonitions,” Amelia finished, quite unperturbed. “We must do something, Emerson, and I am sure Nefret and Ramses will agree!”
Emerson muttered something that Amelia deemed wise to ignore, before flashing a patently false smile at his wife. “Naturally, my dear,” he purred he saccharine tones edged with something considerably more unpleasant. “They will have no choice in the matter. Now, where the devil are we?” as the train drew to a stop.
“Interlaken. And there are Ramses and Nefret!” and Amelia leaned out of the window to wave frantically at the tall dark man with a lovely woman by his side.

A couple of hours later saw the family foursome sitting in the ground floor of the Pension Wellington, where they were staying. Nefret’s stay at the clinic had ended a couple of days before, and she had discharged herself firmly. Her doctors realised that they could not argue with her, and agreed, on the condition that she went somewhere restful for a time. Nefret would have been quite happy to ignore this, but Ramses had insisted, and here they were at the Gornetz Platz.
Ramses handed his wife her whiskey and then turned to hand the same to his mother.
“Is Charla happy at the school?” he enquired, sitting on the broad windowsill. The elder Emersons had stayed at Briesau an extra fortnight, at the request of Hilda Annersley and Madge Russell, the owner of the school.
Emerson grunted something, and Nefret patted his hand. “Yes, father dear, we know you don’t like schools. But this one seems rather different, from what you’ve said. What a wonderful place for a school, if this place is any guide!” She flung a glance out of the window at the glorious view beyond.
“It’s certainly very lovely,” her mother in law agreed. “I gather Charla has had some difficulties settling in with the others, but hopefully that will settle soon. She is not used to lots of girls, after all, and- well, we know what that can mean!” Amelia looked at Nefret, who grinned.
Years before, when Nefret Forth had joined the Emersons at the age of 13 as their ward, Amelia had tried to introduce the girl to other ‘young ladies’ of her own age. Suffice it to say that the girls had not been at all ladylike, and Nefret, with her exotic name and complete ignorance of ‘ladylike’ accomplishments had had a miserable time.
“Charla’s rather overwhelming when you first meet her,” her proud father said, doing his best to be fair and impartial. “I’m sure she’ll soon settle down. She’s adaptable enough, and she’s been in many different situations with us.”
Emerson scowled. “The wrong kind of situation! And now, thanks to your mother, Charla and all of us could be embroiled in another!”
Nefret looked interested. “Yes, Ramses said something about a problem. What is it?”
Amelia responded with a question. “Do you know where Belsornia is?”
Nefret shook her head. “No. Never heard of it. Ramses?”
“Isn’t that one of the Balkan states? Very small, on the Yugoslavian border?”
“Correct. It is indeed. Do you know anything about the royal family?”
“Cursed aristocracy!” Emerson muttered around his pipe. “Trust your mother for that!”
Nefret suppressed a grin and Ramses’ face took on the ‘stone pharoah’ aspect he wore when he was trying to control either emotion or amusment.
“What about the royal family?” Nefret asked obediently, seeing her husband was not going to contribute.
“They have one of the finest Egyptological collections in the world, that’s what!” Emerson returned. “They bought several of the gems of Tutankhamen’s tomb in ’22- cursed collectors!”

“Yes, father, we know how you feel about private collectors,” Nefret put in with a soothing tap. “But what has that to do with us- or Charla?”
Amelia took up the tale. “Several of the pieces were given by King Carol to his daughter and heiress, the Crown Princess Elisaveta. They agreed to hide the pieces away- Belsornia is undergoing some upheaval, as you may imagine, given events in Russia and in the area in general, and if the royal family run into serious trouble, it would be as well to have a reservoir of wealth somewhere.”
Comprehension dawned. “And the pieces have gone missing?” Nefret breathed, looking quickly at Ramses. “You think-?”
“Not quite,” admitted her mother in law. “Most of the collection has been very well hidden. Some smaller pieces have been taken, however. More seriously, Elisaveta seems to be under threat, as she is away from home and therefore not subject to the same security.”
“But I still don’t see what this has to do with us!” Nefret protested.
“Elisaveta Arsonira, as she is known, is a pupil at the Chalet School,” Amelia explained simply. “She is several years younger than our Charla, but they have met- as we have. Elisaveta is a charming girl with lovely manners and a sweet smile.”
“So what’s happened to her?” Ramses demanded, looking resigned. He had planned a full season at Thebes this year, but he knew his mother. They would never get her away from Central Europe until this was resolved.
“Nothing- as yet. But several strangers- dark men, apparently- have been luking in Briesau where the school is, and several times Elisaveta and her friends have seen strangers lurking. The school is worried in case the Princess should be captured, and forced to reveal the hiding place of the treasure.”
“Even if they succeeded in that, it wouldn’t help the thieves unless the stuff was nearby,” Nefret pointed out. “Or- is it?”
Emerson removed his pipe. “The school do not themselves know for certain, but they are suspicious that the treasure has in fact been hidden in the Austrian Tyrol, near them. They fear that the Princess will be kidnapped and then held as ransom to force a disclosure from the King, or, better still, that she will be able to lead them to the treasure. Therefore, they want three things from us- our help in convincing the King and Princess to reveal the whereabouts of the gems, our promise that we will move the stuff and hide it more safely, if necessary, and finally, they want to know who is responsible.”
“Sure we know that,” his wife murmured. “It’s Sethos. It must be!”

Emerson's reaction to this seemingly innocuous suggestion was profane in the extreme- even for him- and his wife looked at him sternly.
"Emerson! Don't-"
"Swear," finished Emerson between his teeth. "Peabody, you would make an angel swear, and well you know it! You're letting that rampageous imagination of yours run away with you again. I knew letting you read those Agatha Christie books was a mistake! Don't you agree?" Emerson appealed to his son and daughter in law, and groaned at the passively blank faces they turned to him. "You're all in league against me," he grumnbled. "Why  the devil can't I have one, just one, season undisturbed by theives, murderers or conmen?"
Ramses and Nefret, who had heard this speech with almost disturbing monotony for more years than they cared to remember, ignored it.
"She has a point, you know," Ramses told his father, still in 'stone pharoah' mode. "And- I've a suggestion, one you're not going to like." He exchanged a glance with his wife, who nodded slightly.
"We need to go to the Tyrol," she said with characteristic bluntness. "Father, you know we do. Our help has been asked. You know we can't refuse!"
Emerson threw his clay pipe across the room with such energy that both the pipe and the window it fell against smashed. Even so, the resulting noise was not enough to drown his reaction.
"Curse it! Curse that cursed school!"

oh thank you, Esmeralda, that's quite a compliment!  ;D
Here's a teeny weeny little bit just for that!
********************

Emerson gave in to the inevitable- eventually. A week later saw him stamp through the front hall of the Chalet, and let out a yell that resounded from one end of the wooden building to the other.
Hilda Annersley, in the middle of delivering a literature lesson to the Sixth, paused mid sentence and looked at Charla, whose eyes had brightened at the sound.
"A visitor for you, Charla?" the mistress asked solemnly, her blue grey eyes dancing.
"Yes, Miss Annersley. At least, I think so. Can I go and see them?"
" I'm sure you can. The question is may you," the Senior Mistress returned drily, and Charla exchanged a look of amusement with Jo, before vanishing through the door. Miss Annersley suppressed another smile, and turned the attention of her class back to Hamlet's soliloquies.
Charla, meantime, had thrown school etiquette to the winds and raced down the corridor in a manner guaranteed to get her into trouble normally. Luckily for her, everyone was engaged, so the only people to get the benefit of her whirlwind tactics were her family.
"Mother and Father!" Charla shrieked as she threw herself on both parents, disarranging Nefret's red-gold coils in the process. Nefret laughed, and the girl pulled back to look at her with serious dark eyes.
"Are you OK now?" she asked anxiously.
"Yes, perfectly!" her mother reassured her and Charla, who was perceptive in many ways, examined Nefret's cornflower-blue eyes carefully before grinning widely in relief.
"How is school?" Amelia asked as she straightened her hat after her granddaughter's tempestuous embrace. The words were brisk and almost sharp, but the hand Amelia put on the girl's face was a gentle one.
"Fine now," Charla said hurriedly. She had no wish for her grandmother to find out about her altercation with Joey Bettany, and Emerson, who was sharper than his wife sometimes give him credit for, grinned.
"Glad to hear it!" he told her with a pull of her black curls. "Now, Miss Charla, we need to see that schoolmistress of yours."
Charla looked puzzled. "Which one?"
"Miss Annersley," Amelia put in firmly, as Emerson's eyes bulged at the question. He had forgotten Hilda's name, and would probably have gone on to describe her- with possibly unexpected results. Amelia had no wish to hear her husband's views on the slender woman they had met previously, especially if the said views were to be aired before one of Miss Annersley's pupils.

*sigh* Oh, very well. I hope it lives up to expectations!

Emerson looked blank. "Is that her name? The tall slim one with brown hair and grey eyes and er-umm-" He stuttered to a halt as he saw the expression on his wife's face.
"And how, pray tell, do you know the colour of her eyes?" Amelia demanded, understandably annoyed. This was the man, after all, who was incapable of distinguishing one crimson gown from another.
Emerson looked as sheepish as he could- which wasn't very- and began to grovel. "Come now, Peabody, you're being ridiculous," he cajoled. "She's young enough to be my granddaughter, after all!"
"That is what worries me," Amelia returned austuerely.
"Amelia!" roared her husband. "That is ENOUGH! You know damn well I've never looked at another woman and I'm not likely to begin at this late date!" He stopped and gave his wife his most ferocious glare. "And if you really want to know, the reason I remembered Miss Ann-er-Umm's eyes was because they reminded me of yours!" He ended with a meaning glance, and Amelia blushed and subsided, just as Hilda herself appeared on the scene.

Thanks Lisa,  really fubby ;D

Title: Re: CS and the Emersons

Er- fubby? Is that a CBB word or just Esmeralda's version of 'funny'...? ??? ;)

"Good afternoon, Professor and Mrs Emerson," came the rich voice they had noted on their previous visit. "I see Charla found you. Is there a problem?" The polite interest in Miss Annersley's tone, combined with the gently raised eyebrows, reduced both of the 'senior' Emersons to considerable confusion, much to the amusement of their daughter in law.
Nefret came forward with outstretched hand and her most charming smile in place- and Nefret could be very charming.
"I don't think so. Miss Annersley, isn't it? I'm Nefret Emerson- Mrs Emerson the Younger," she added with an irrepressible grin in the direction of her esteemed mother in law.
Hilda returned with a charming smile of her own. "I'm very pleased to meet you, Mrs Emerson. I hope you are satisfied that Charla is content with us- or as content as she could be," the Senior Mistress added with a wry amusement that was reflected in the cornflower blue eyes facing hers.
"It's certainly a very different life for her," Nefret agreed, laughing, "but she seems to be settling down more or less. Thank you for adapting to her unusual circumstances- although from what my parents in law say, that is nothing new to you."
"Indeed not. Now. would you like a cup of tea? Charla, my dear, what do you have after Mittagessen?"
"History, Miss Annersley," Charla told her.
"Well, you certainly can't miss that," the Senior Mistress told her so firmly that Charla knew that argument would be useless. "In the meantime, you've had nothing to eat. Off you go and ask Joey to get you something from Karen. You may return to your family at Kaffee und Kuchen. Run along now!" and Charla, seeing her mother nod at her, had no choice but to go.
Hilda turned back to the visitors. "Mademoiselle- our Head Mistress- knows nothing of this," she explained as she led the way to her little 'snuggery,' "so Nell Wilson and I decided to deal with it ourselves- with your help. Obviously, as you know, Madge Russell has been informed, but that's as far as this has gone."
She seated her guests and went to ring for tea. When she returned, she stood and looked at them in silence for a moment. She was very impressed with Nefret, although it was difficult to express in words. After a moment's reflection, the English mistress realised that the niggling familiarity was caused by a quality that the younger Mrs Emerson shared with Princess Elisaveta- a strange kind of dignity, that was assumed only when it was needed.

Sorry Lisa - but the B is right next to the N on the keyboard!
Thanks the the last part, I do hope that Miss Annersley is about to let us in on the secret too.

"Have you had any thoughts on how to tackle this situation?" Hilda asked as she poured tea for her guests.
Emerson and Amelia looked at each other. "We have contacts," the latter explained rather mysteriously, as far as Hilda was concerned, "and we have reason to believe that we know who your potential kidnapper is."
"But there's more than one," the mistress objected as she sat down herself.
Ramses spoke for almost the first time. "I think not," he said gravely. "They almost certainly have a ringleader- a- a master mind, if you like, behind them." He and Nefret studiously avoided looking at either each other or their parents. Hilda noted, with surprise, that Amelia looked rather smug, and Emerson appeared to be in imminent danger of a stroke.
"Professor Emerson!" Hilda exclaimed in alarm. "What is the matter? Are you ill?"
Emerson made a violent effort and controlled his spleen. "No, ma'am, not at all," he managed at last, speaking rather stiffly.
"Are you sure you wouldn't like a glass of water?" their hostess enquired anxiously, still at a loss to explain the startling change that had come over Emerson's usually handsome features.
"My husband is quite well," Amelia told her inflexibly, adding a steely stare that matched 'the Abbess' at her best- or worst. "Unfortunately, he does not have sufficient control of his temper, and reacts poorly to certain phrases. The one used by my son was dangerously close to a pseudonym my husband detests."
"Because it's so cursed melodramatic," Emerson intervened for himself at this point. "Master Criminal, indeed!"
Hilda could only gasp at this. "I-see."
"Don't worry," Nefret told her with a twinkle. "Mother and Father can be rather-er- overwhelming at times. Now, don't scowl like that, Mother. You know it's true!"
"Don't be ridiculous, Nefret. I never scowl. It is extremely rude and undignified," Amelia told her tartly, scowling all the while.
Nefret said, "Of course, Mother," and kept her own expression blank.
Hilda made a desperate attempt to get the conversation back on to some kind of track.
"I- Would you like to speak with the Crown Princess?" she asked at last.
Ramses' dark brows met abruptly, showing his surprise. "Does she know what is happening?"
Hilda gave him a small smile. "She knows. Elisaveta is both childish and yet curiously mature for her age, as you will see when you meet her. In fact, I'll send for her now. The Fifth have needlework, but Elisaveta needs little teaching there- unlike some of our English girls," she added with a smile as she rose to ring the bell.
"Charla certainly is no needlewoman- except when it comes to stitching wounds, of course!" Nefret laughed.
Hilda looked at her rather curiously as she gave her order. Really, this family were very strange!

Er- what secret? Do you mean about Nefret? Cos I'm trying to work it in- only it isn't the kind of thing you work into everyday conversation! ;D

Useless information: (except for those AP fans who already know this) 'Nefret' comes from the ancient Egyptian for 'beautiful' and is of course similar to the more famous Nefertiti- 'the beautiful one is come' or something like that.
Amazing what you pick up! ;D
