Title: Centre of Mystical Convergence: CS/Buffy x-over

Switzerland, 2002

Buffy Summers strode along the mountain path, trying her best to ignore her younger sister’s moaning.

“Giiiles, why do we have to go up this way?” Dawn was asking.  “They have invented cars round here, you know!”  As Giles’ only answer was a distracted mumble, Dawn ran to catch up with her sister.  “Buffy!  Tell Giles this is is so unnecessary.”

“Dawn, you know we have to come this way,” Buffy said patiently.  Well, she hoped it was patiently.  Dawn had been through a lot in the last year, and Buffy wanted to be good and sure that she was back to herself before she relaxed.  Of course, that didn’t take into account Dawn’s extreme annoyingness.

“But, Buffy…”

“No, Dawn!  We’re going this way!”

“Yeah, Dawn, a little exercise never – hurt – anyone.”  Dawn stopped and pivoted on her heel, looking sceptically at Xander Harris, puffing up the mountainside.  Looking relieved at any excuse for stopping, he bent over, resting his hands on his knees.  “Good – for – you!”

“No, it’s not,” objected Anya, coming up behind him.  “I remember I once cursed a man – back in the 80s.  Exercised till his heart burst.  Not pretty.”  She stopped, considering.  “Well, in a way, yes it was.”

“I can only say eww,” Buffy commented drily.

“Well, it was,” said Anya, matter of factly.  “His girlfriend didn’t think so, though.  Honestly, I don’t know why they ask to have their men cursed when-“

“Here it is!”  Anya looked put out at the interruption, but the others clustered around Giles, looking at the spot he indicated.

“Right there?” asked Buffy, dubiously.  “Giles, it’s a hotel.”

“It’s a source of mystical energy,” he insisted.

“Riiiight,” said Dawn, yawning.  “I knew we should have stayed in Sunnydale.  I had a date.  Did I tell you had a date?”

“Only about a thousand times,” replied Buffy under her breath, before saying aloud, “But Giles – hotel!!  I mean, hello ski resort.  Ooh, ooh, can we stay?”

“Do you know how expensive these places are?” demanded Anya.  “It’s extortionate – in a good way.”  She shook her head admiringly.  “Say what you like about the Europeans, they certainly know how to get a business going.”

“Uh-huh.  Giles, hotel.”

“Well, as I said, it is a centre of mystical convergence, despite being a hotel.  And, by the way, I fail to see why a hotel can’t be a centre of mystical convergence.  The one in Sunnydale was in a high school library, for God’s sake!”

“Point taken, G-man.” Xander said in a would-be soothing voice.  It didn’t work.

“Xander, I have told you numerous times not to call me that!”

“Giles is going red,” noted Anya, dispassionately.  “Do you think he’s apoplectic?”

“Apo-what?” asked Dawn, curiously.

“Apoplectic.  It means –“

“I am not apoplectic!  Now, will you all please listen!”  There was a group murmur of assent, and Giles’ scowl lessened.  “Thank you.  Now, all my research suggests that this site was host to a particularly strong force about fifty years ago, that may well help to augment the slayer’s power.  As far as I can make out, if the slayer should enter the area, then –“

As they walked towards the ski resort, they found out exactly what happened when the slayer entered the area.

“…And for cheek, you can take an order mark, Kit Lucy!”  With that final statement, Len Maynard, Head Girl of the Chalet School, turned on her heel and walked off, leaving behind a crushed Junior Middle.  As Len approached the main door of the Chalet School, the sound of running steps could be heard, and a moment later Ted Grantley, the Second Prefect, hoved into view, her usually pale cheeks flushed with exertion.

“Hold hard, Len!  Are you walking along the path?”  Len nodded, waiting for her friend to catch up.

“Yes.  Miss Annersley asked me to go along and deliver a parcel.  Why, do you need something taking?”

“No; I just have leave to go with you?”  Len looked at her curiously as the two Seniors left the building.

“Why?”  Ted shrugged uncomfortably.

“I’m not sure.  I just feel – oh, funny, I suppose.  I can’t describe it.  Anyway, Matey said I might go with you.”

“Shake out your fidgets,” Len opined.  “She’s probably right.”  Ted flashed a grin at her erstwhile companion.

“Heresy, Len, my child!  Don’t you know that Matey is always right?”  Len laughed appreciatively at this sally.

“Don’t I just!  I’ve known her all my life, pretty much, and she’s never let up an inch.”  Ted shuddered extravagantly.

“I can imagine all too well.  Don’t tell me Matey dandled you on her knee.”

“Probably.  But then, dozens of the staff did.  I don’t think they’ll ever think of me as grown-up.”

“Well, you aren’t, quite,” objected Ted.  “Still at school isn’t grown-up – even if you are contemplating bigger and better things” – this with a shrewd look at her friend’s slightly pink face.  “I do see your point, though,” she said meditatively.  “One of my brothers came back in the hols, and insisted on treating me as if I was about five.  He entirely missed the fact that I was eighteen!”

“It’s a hard line to hoe,” agreed Len.  “I’m lucky, I suppose; the rest of our crowd are younger, so Mamma and Papa have never really treated me like a kid.  In fact…”  But whatever Len was going to say was destined never to be uttered, for as the two girls strolled down the mountain path that led further along the Platz to the post office, they were greeted by a sight that made them stop and gaze in open-mouthed amazement.

Please carry on Liss - I've only ever watched Buffy in a sort of having the TV on in the background sort of way so I don't really know who everyone is, but this is intriguing enough for that not to matter.

Liss, You have to carry on with this!! I love the idea of Buffy and Co ending up at the CS!! Although, I don't know what the two groups will make of each other.....

I hope this signals your intention to stay around for a while Liss.

Please don't leave a story hanging like that.

Glad you've included Giles. Scooby gang isn't complete without him.

“We’re not in Kansas any more,” muttered Xander, earning himself a concerned look from Anya.

“We weren’t in Kansas before, honey,” she pointed out carefully.  “This is Switzerland.  It is still Switzerland, isn’t it?”

“Well, there’s the ski resort,” said Giles, nodding towards the wooden buildings standing just as they had been.

“It doesn’t look much like a ski resort any more,” added Buffy, squinting.  “Ski lift’s gone.  And the entire rest of the houses.”

“Hey, look!” Dawn said suddenly, as she turned a full circle.  “People!”  The others turned at her voice, and saw that she had spoken the truth.  Further along the path stood two girls in identical blue coats, clutching at each others’ arms.  They both looked to be in their late teens; the taller had a full head of chestnut hair, with a prettily featured face.  The other, considerably shorter, was slight, with short dark hair and a pale complexion that was nonetheless quite striking.

“People…or something else?” asked Xander, slightly concerned by the afternoon’s events.  Buffy squared up beside him, ready to fight whatever came their way.

“Hey!” she called, her tone defiant.  “Mind telling us where we are?”  The two girls let go of each other, exchanged glances, and approached.  Buffy watched them warily.

“This is the Gornetz Platz,” said the girl with the chestnut hair.

“Which is exactly where we were before,” announced Giles, then coughed in confusion at the strange look he got from the girls.

“And what’s that?” Buffy asked, pointing to what had been the ski resort.

“That’s our school,” replied the other girl.  “I say, are you lost?”

“Well, in a manner of speaking,” said Giles.  “We were told there was a ski resort around here somewhere.”

“Not round here,” returned the taller girl.  “You have to go round to the other side before you getting anything like that.  How did you get up here?”  This last was asked with a critical look at their outfits, and Giles humphed uncomfortably.

“Oh, we were dropped off,” he answered vaguely.  “I don’t suppose your school has a phone we could use?”

“Oh yes,” said the taller girl, obviously used to taking charge of the situation.  “I’m sure Miss Annersley – she’s our Head – wouldn’t mind your using it.  Come along.”  She walked back down along the path, gesturing for the others to join her.  “I’m Helena Maynard, by the way, the Head Girl.  This is Theodora Grantley, our Second Prefect.”

“How do you do,” responded Giles politely.  “My name is Rupert Giles, and these are Buffy and Dawn Summers, Alexander Harris and Anya Emerson.”  There was a murmur of how-d’you-dos, followed by a mildly uncomfortable silence, until the small group walked up the drive, past the sign declaring this to be the ‘Chalet School’, and through the main door.

“The office is through this way,” said the school’s Head Girl, divesting herself of her coat.  “Wait here a minute, why don’t you, and I’ll fetch Miss Dene, our secretary.”  With that, she and the other girl vanished down a corridor.

Please keep going, Liss!  I've never watched Buffy, so I have no idea what's going on, but I have vested interests in this thread continuing because I'm going to use it to lure my housemate onto the CBB ;D  She used to be a CS fan and her resistance is already weakening in the face of my addiction - she's read books 1, 2 & 3 in the space of the last 48 hours *cackle* - but I think if I get her reading a thread with CS and Buffy, we'll have her hooked for sure!

As soon as they were out of earshot, Len grabbed Ted’s arm.  “I say!” she said, drawling badly enough to make her mother cringe.  “What a rum lot!”

“You can say that again!” exclaimed Ted with feeling.  “Did you see what they were wearing? Skin-tight doesn’t begin to cover it!”  Len gurgled with laughter suddenly.

“Imagine what Matey’ll say if she sees them!”

“Probably nothing,” said Ted, regretfully.  “It’s not like they’re girls here, or anything.”

“I wonder what sort of school created them?” pondered Len.

“American, I imagine,” said Ted.  “Sounded that way, anyway; not Mr Giles, though.”

“Yes, he was the most normal one of the lot-  Heavens!  We can’t stand around here like this.  We’re supposed to be finding Miss Dene!”  With that, the two girls raced off, happily oblivious to their respective standings in the school.

Meanwhile, standing in the foyer, the Scooby gang was looking distinctly unhappy.

“I maintain we are not in Kansas,” insisted Xander.  “Something very funny is going on.  Funny-peculiar,” he clarified, in case anyone missed his meaning.  “In fact, more peculiar than funny.”

“Suggestions, Giles?” asked Buffy, glancing at the older man.  He shrugged.

“Some sort of trans-dimensional rift we travelled through?”  Anya shook her head.

“Not like any trans-dimensional rift I’ve ever seen.”

“Seen many?” asked Giles, casually.

“Quite a few.  They were fashionable for a while in the late fourteenth century.”

“Huh.”  A few moments’ silence.  Then Xander spoke again.

“Still on the not-in-Kansas theme.  And what was with those uniforms?”

“Well, Xander, this is a school,” Dawn said drily.  “They tend to go in for that sort of thing.”

“Yeah, but school uniforms are supposed to be short and sassy.  Sorta like cheerleader outfits but not so bright.”

“This is Europe,” said Anya.  “They don’t have cheerleaders.”

“All the more reason for short skirts,” said Xander, enthusiastically.  “You know, to make up for what they’re missing.”  The girls present rolled their eyes at his guy-ness, and Giles was about to remark on the shocking lack of political correctness, when they suddenly realised they were no longer alone.

“Mr Giles?” hazarded the lady who had just appeared from the corridor where the two girls had exited.  “I’m Miss Dene, the school secretary.  Len said you needed to use our phone.”

“That’s right.  Thank you very much for your help, Miss Dene."

Note: no idea about telephone systems in the 50s.  Too lazy to research.

~~~
Miss Dene, who was a fair-haired, attractive woman in her late thirties, let the group to what was presumably her office, and pointed out an old-fashioned telephone.
“There you go,” she said.  “I’ll leave you to it; I’m next door when you’re finished.”  She left, closing the office door behind her.  Giles eyed the phone.
“That’s Bakelite,” he said, a propos of nothing.  The others simply looked at him.
“Who on earth are you going to call?” demanded Buffy.  Giles shrugged.
“I’ll try Willow, I suppose.”  He lifted the phone, and dialled the international code for America, then Willow’s number in Sunnydale.  Nothing happened.  “It won’t connect,” he said with a frown.
“Try the Magic Box,” suggested Dawn.  Again, Giles couldn’t get through.  He sighed with frustration, and looked round the office.
“Good Lord!  I haven’t seen one of those in years!  My father had one.”  He ventured over to the other side of the office, gazing in admiration at a solid metal typewriter.  “That’s how this sort of thing should be made!  None of those little plastic keyboards.  I wonder where –“  He trailed off, then leapt for the phone once more.
“Hello?  International Operator?  Can you put me through to England, please.  Yes, I’ll hold.  Operator?  Can you put me through to the speaking clock.”  There was silence again as the others looked on in confusion.  Then Giles slowly lowered the receiver.  “Well, we are in Kansas.  But Dorothy hasn’t been born yet.”  More silence.
“Huh?”  Giles restrained himself from sighing in exasperation.  “I mean,” he said, with admirable patience, “that we are currently in the year 1957.”
“1957!” came the general cry, quickly hushed as the door opened and Miss Dene came through, a frown on her face.
“Is everything all right?”
“Er-yes.  I just had some difficulties in getting through to our friends.”
“Oh, I see.  Oh, Miss Annersley!”  This exclamation came as the door swung further open to reveal a tall, brown-haired woman in an MA gown.
“Hello, Rosalie.  What’s going on here?”
“These are Mr Giles and his friends, Miss Annersley.  Len and Ted found them lost when they went walking.”  There were more introductions, interrupted by a knock at the door.
“Bitte, mein Fraulein, but it is snowing,” said the maid standing out there.  A glance at the window confirmed this.
“Danke, Mitzi,” said Miss Annersley, dismissing the maid, before turning to their unexpected guests.  “The snow comes down with a vengeance when it finally arrives.  I’m afraid you’ve been caught in it.  The best thing to do is for you to stay here until it settles.”
It was with no little alarm that the Scoobies realised they were to be separated.  Miss Dene ushered Giles and Xander away, while Miss Annersley pressed a bell at the side of her desk.  When Mitzi arrived, Miss Annersley smiled at her.
“Could you ask Matron Lloyd to join us, please, Mitzi.”  The Swiss girl bobbed a curtsey and left.  Miss Annersley turned to the three girls sitting in her office.  “Now, girls, why don’t you tell me about yourselves.  How old are you, for a start?”  Dawn and Anya looked at Buffy, who suddenly realised that the Head Mistress was speaking to her.
“I’m Buffy.  Summers.  I’m 21 and I live in Sunnydale, California.  This is my sister, Dawn.  She’s fourteen.”
“Nearly fifteen,” interjected Dawn.  “In a week-“
“Or six,” finished Anya, ignoring the resentful look Dawn shot at her.  “My name is Anya Emerson, and I am 23 years old.  No more than that, obviously.  I was born on the 4th July, and I –“
“So, that’s us,” interrupted Buffy, anxious to stop Anya before she went into one of her famed ‘I’m not a demon, no sirree’ speeches.
“I take it Dawn is the only one of you still in school,” said Miss Annersley.
“That’s right,” said Buffy.  “I was in college but, well, our mom died, and-“  She trailed off, and Miss Annersley was quick to note the distress in her eyes.
“I understand, dear,” she said kindly.  “How about you, Miss Emerson?”  Anya prepared to launch into a subject very dear to heart.
“I work in the Magic Box.  It’s a shop Giles owns.  But don’t be fooled by that – he lives in England now, so I’m in charge.”  Fortunately, before she could get too carried away on the joys of money and capitalism, there was a sharp knock at the door, and Matron Lloyd walked in, a small, spare figure in her crisp, white uniform.  She cast a curious eye over the sight that met here.
“You wanted to see me, Miss Annersley?” she asked calmly.
“Thank you, Matron, yes.  These unfortunate people have got somewhat lost, and given the weather I thought it was best they stayed here until it was possible to leave safely.  Miss Summers, and her sister Dawn, and Miss Emerson.  This is Matron Lloyd.  She’ll be able to show you where you can sleep.  There are spaces in Lilac, I think, Matron?”  Matron nodded agreeably.
“That’s right.  Come along with me, ladies.”  They followed her obediently.  She expected nothing less.
