Title: Chalet School Christmas Carols
Post by KB on Dec 1st, 2003, 12:55am
Hilde managed to get hold of a CD of Christmas Carols and thought that, while they were lovely, she didn't understand the full religious message. Instead, she wanted to know why they weren't about the Chalet School, so I thought I would see what I could do to make them easier for her to understand. I will put up a new carol every day until Christmas.

Sung to the tune of “O Little Town of Bethlehem”

O little town of Pertisau,
How well-known art thou s’rroundings!
Above thy deep and sky-blue lake
The Chalet School had its foundings.
Thence came Jo, Madge and Grizel
To start a simple school
Who could have guessed in a few years
It would have its own pool?
And in the years that came between
All manner of adventures
Would be the lot of girls that came
To further Madge’s venture.
Among those tow’ring mountains
The school grew year by year.
Until the dark of Nazism
Should introduce its fear.
The school was forced to leave its home
And came to rest in Guernsey.
Alas, howe’er, that stay was short
To Wales they came to stay free.
Se’en happy years they spent there
Then forced to move once more.
They came to rest on Briavel’s Isle
And played upon the shore.
And yet Old Timers yearned to be
Back in the place where t’all began.
‘Though Austria was fraught with risk
So Switzerland was the next plan.
And so the school sent there a part
While others stayed behind to keep
The old traditions going strong
And new in spirits sinking deep.
So, settled on the Görnetz Platz
The school begins a brand new stage.
The years go by, girls come and go,
And finally it comes of age.
And even here it does not stop
But goes on growing every year.
So all the books, both old and new
Are greeted with a great big cheer!

Well, (although it's 30 minutes early for the Brits) you may extend your repertoire with this one:

Sung to the tune of “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”

What is the theme of this year’s play?
What is the theme of this year’s play?
What is the theme of this year’s play? Please tell us that now!
Good tidings we bring to you and your kin; (Will it be the Bells or perhaps scene of war?
Good tidings for Christmas and a Happy New Year. (Christmas through the Ages or Strangers at the Inn?

For we must have the Nativ’ty
For we must have the Nativ’ty
For we must have the Nativ’ty Always as the last scene!
Christmas in far lands or in long-ago times?
With the famed Three Kings or Herod and his court?

We must go and see this year’s play.
We must go and see this year’s play.
We must go and see this year’s play, so let’s go right now!
The youngest of shepherds or a wealthy, spoiled child?
Old Black Forest legends or the famed Passion Play?

What is the theme of this year’s play?
What is the theme of this year’s play?
What is the theme of this year’s play? Please tell us that now!

Well, I think the CBB Xmas day should start at Midnight Xmas eve Aussie/NZ time (whichever is earliest!!) and end at Midnight Xmas day US/Canadian time (whichever is latest!!)

Sung to the tune of “Ding Dong Merrily On High”

Oh, no, look who’s hiding there,
The bad man, Cosimo.
Behind the suitcases he stares,
Waiting for Joey to go.
Joey, rescuer of Veta!

Ternikai has Veta’s trust.
She thinks that he’s her friend.
And rely on him she must.
Yet it’s all a pretend.
Joey, rescuer of Veta!

When both men take the Princess
T’is only Jo can aid her.
In spite of all Madge’s distress.
Joey manages to save her.
Joey, rescuer of Veta!

If you stay logged on the whole time :)
Someone could work it out, where is it today first (New zealand?) and where is it today last?
It is to do with hemispehere, and then work out from when to when a day and obviously Christmas day will last.
Which member is furthest south? or what?
and which furtherst to the other way

It's today 'first' in New Zealand (irrc Auckland is either 12 or 13 hours ahead of GMT). As for where it's last, it depends rather on whether we have any subscribers further west than Toronto (five hours behind GMT, as is the rest of the North American East Coast [Canada doesn't have its own unique timezones - it shares the same three/four the USA has]).

Meanwhile, getting to the thread topic, bravo, KB :) (Though my boss may hate you as I'm now humming O Little Town of Bethlehem...) These are very clever. Can't wait for tomorrow's :)

Ray *off to look up where the international date line is*

Although it would have been easier if you'd written the chorusy bits like so:

"Jo-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-ey
Rescuer of Veta"

Just to help us with the mental singing of it, you understand  ;)

That's not totally true.  We have Newfoundland Time which is GMT -3.5  Do not ask we why the Newfies needed that half hour difference!  I think that they might be the only 1/2 hour time zone.

Chelsea *btw time zones were invented by a Canadian - something to do with railroads running to a schedule*

Title: Re: Chalet School Christmas Carols
Post by Ray on Dec 3rd, 2003, 2:26pm
It's cos they're further East than the rest of continental North America - and far enough East to make a difference, I guess. I'd forgotten them (oops!).

There are a couple of timezones that have half hours in them *pauses to think of the stupidity of that statement* *tries to rephrase* *sighs and continues* though I *think* only the assorted military refer to them. (Or, to put it another way: On the map the US Navy hosted, it had several with half hours, on the map I've provided a link to below, no half hours at all). For more information:

Ray *will now attempt to stop hijacking KB's thread*

Title: Re: Chalet School Christmas Carols
Post by crashbb on Dec 3rd, 2003, 2:32pm
Good theory but they aren't the easternmost part of Canada.  And there is a another time zone (Atlantic) which is half an hour earlier than them (PEI, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick are in it).  Parts of Quebec which are directly north of New Foundland are in the Eastern Time Zone (like Toronto) not the Newfoundland timezone.  The Newfies are just weird.  I suppose it's like Saskatchewan not doing Day Light Savings, so they are out of synch for half the year.  There are parts of the US that skip DLS as well.

Chelsea *comes from a family of Newfies there can say that they are weird*

I still get all the Eastern provinces mixed up.  I know they are all "over there" but which one comes first is a little iffy.  Just never tell a Maritimer that New Foundland is part of the Maritimes - it's like a red flag to a bull.

Chelsea *also gets confused with all the new -stans in Europe, I know they're near the old USSR but where (and what they are all called) is not so clear*

Um - the Stans *ARE* the old USSR (or some of it), and (she says having just double checked this on a map) they're all to the south of Russia.

I can never remember which one goes where!  The former USSR was huge (even bigger than Canada).  Then throw in Pakistan and Afghanistan (non former USSR-stans, though Afghanistan was under Soviet control - I think) and I'm hopeless.

*Thanks KB for the Carols - what a brilliant idea, the thought of trying to write them is enough to send me divng back to bed.

Russia did invade Afghanistan a few years ago - I think that when they left it caused a power vacuum which allowed the Taleban to sieze control.  I was doing History A level at the time and the tutor insisrted that the West should have been supporting rather than opposing the Soviet Union.

Well, here's another for you to sing along to:

Sung to the tune of “O Come All Ye Faithful”

Oh look, it’s the bad girl
There always has to be one.
Oh come, look, Oh come see, here is Grizel Cochrane.
Come now and watch her
Wash her hair in holy water.
Oh come, let’s watch her play up
Oh come, let’s watch her play up
Oh come, let’s watch her play up, naughty girl.

Now watch her jump out
Of her bedroom window
Where is going? Oh, I know now
Up the Tiernjoch
She has just broke bounds.
Oh come, let’s watch her play up
Oh come, let’s watch her play up
Oh come, let’s watch her play up, naughty girl.

Look, she’s off again
This time to the Falls
E’en though she’s supposed to be Head Girl
What will Madame say?
Will she let her be that?
Oh come, let’s watch her play up
Oh come, let’s watch her play up
Oh come, let’s watch her play up, naughty girl.

Now she’s Head Girl
Will she behave better?
Or will she forget herself and play up once more?
Oh, look she’s fighting.
Though it isn’t her fault.
Oh come, let’s watch her grow up
Oh come, let’s watch her grow up
Oh come, let’s watch her grow up, the Head girl.

Now she’s getting married,
At last found a soulmate,
And she’ll be happy the rest of her life.
With her baby Nigel.
A perfect Chalet girl.
Oh come, let’s watch him grow up
Oh come, let’s watch him grow up
Oh come, let’s watch him grow up, babe of the Head girl.

I live in one of those states, and every year the Legislature has a grand debate with those favoring "God's Time" holding out against the evil ones pushing for consistent central or eastern time.

I think I recall a poster from British Columbia in the snow thread, by the way, in terms of who's Christmas comes latest.  So, unless there's someone in far western Alaska or Hawaii?

*chuckles* I know. Good, isn't it. Well, what do you know? It's time for another!

Sung to the tune of “Silent Night, Holy Night”

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright
But wait, what are these sounds that I hear?
Whispers and footsteps that seem to be near.
Feast in the music ro-om,
Feast in the music room.
Silent night, holy night,
Nay, for Matey has turned on a light.
See her coming down the front stairs
The girls are too busy with their own cares,
Cripes, for they have been cau-aught!
Cripes, for they have been caught!
Silent night, holy night,
Matey among them, oh, what a fright!
The Head, in the morning, will call them all in,
A lecture, ne’er bettered, to outline their sins,
Feeling like mere inse-ects
Feeling like mere insects.

Very nicely done.

Ray *humming* *and extremely glad she's unlikely to be attending a carol concert as she unquestionably wouldn't be able to resist singing "Feeling like mere insects"*

Are you going to tell us your faves at the end, or when you post them?

That was soooooo good.

As for an extra long Christmas, I reckon for us Brits it would last from midday Christmas Eve to midday Boxing Day (if someone lives in Hawaii and hasn't told us) (approx)

This is a little early, as I'm going out...

Sung to the tune of “Dashing Through The Snow”

Dashing into Hall, in search of Jo’s new book
Ignoring all the danger, without a second look.
But Hilary comes after, not frightened by the flames
In spite of heroics, has to take the blame.
Hero girls, hero girls, dash into the fray!
O how good it is to have a hero on the way!
Hero girls, hero girls, dash into the fray!
O how good it is to have a hero on the way!

Prunella took a dive into the icy lake
And yet if she had not, what would be Margot’s fate?
Although she needed help to get them both to shore
Her bravery and courage passed straight into school lore.
Hero girls, hero girls, dash into the fray!
O how good it is to have a hero on the way!
Hero girls, hero girls, dash into the fray!
O how good it is to have a hero on the way!

When Emmy took a dive, Jo Scott was there to stop
Her fall right over the dangerously high drop.
Although she lost her chance to win the flower show
The prize of books she got for this soon drove away her woe.
Hero girls, hero girls, dash into the fray!
O how good it is to have a hero on the way!
Hero girls, hero girls, dash into the fray!
O how good it is to have a hero on the way!

Kathie’s foothold went, but Mary-Lou was there
In time to grab her arm and Hilary, the pair
Got the mistress to safe and solid ground once more.
When at last the day was done, all three of them were sore.
Hero girls, hero girls, dash into the fray!
O how good it is to have a hero on the way!
Hero girls, hero girls, dash into the fray!
O how good it is to have a hero on the way!

Title: Re: Chalet School Christmas Carols
Post by KB on Today at 8:11pm
Oh, all right, as you've all been so patient.

Sung to the tune of “We Three Kings”

Just three books – all we have thus far
Joey’s accident in the car.
Len gets married, Jack is harried
And Charlie sent off by her Pa.
O, wonder of wonders, what have we here?
Something for which all CS fans will cheer.
At last a book, let’s take a look,
Oh help, is the cheque going to clear?

Next came Gill, at last Head Girl
Now Louise is gone, she’ll have a burl.
Jo is gone, Gill’s on her own,
Her character she will unfurl.
O, wonder of wonders, what have we here?
Something for which all CS fans will cheer.
At last a book, let’s take a look,
Oh help, is the cheque going to clear?

The third fill-in is very new
Who’s in that? Well, here’s a clue
HG’s been there ‘most forever
Got it? ‘Course you do!
Chorus
O, wonder of wonders, what have we here?
Something for which all CS fans will cheer.
At last a book, let’s take a look,
Oh help, is the cheque going to clear?

So what comes next: p’raps Peace at last?
Or will we get Lesley’s book fast?
Or Jo and Rob in India?
Or else the term EBD o’erpassed?
Chorus
O, wonder of wonders, what have we here?
Something for which all CS fans will cheer.
At last a book, let’s take a look,
Oh help, is the cheque going to clear?
