Title: The Brownies go on Pack Holiday
Post by Marianne on Aug 16th, 2003, 7:55pm
Some of the Brownies in the two Chalet school Brownie packs were preparing to go on pack holiday. They were to stay in a  hut on the other side of the Island, it had been specifically fitted out for the purpose. Inside it was a large hall were comunal events, like eating and sing songs would take place, their were four big bedrooms which took up to twelve Brownies in bunk-beds and a smaller leaders room with beds enough for six adults.

The 24 older Brownies who were going were very excited and had packed the day before for their week long trip. The trip was to take up the first week of their summer holidays and was to include alittle swimming, lots of craft and short scrambles.

After a hurried breakfast where the triplets were reprimanded more than once for noisiness, the twenty-four girls, six leaders and their bags set off for the hut called Baden-Powel house.

(please continue)

The walk across the island carrying their kit would have been too much for the little girls, so they were transported to their Pack Holiday home in a motorcoach, which decanted them outside the building just before nine o'clock.

With customary briskness, Brown Owl (who on Earth would it have been?) set to organinsing the excited children (and equally excited adults), with the result that, by the time they sat down to lunch, everything was unpacked and set up, and the walls were covered with charts and posters that the Brownies had spent their last few Pack meetings making.

More glamourous than the pack holidays I went on-sleeping on the floor of Brooks community centre. Still we had a nice brook in the next field to fall into-ALOT!!! I'm SERIOUSLY clumsy!

Umm back to the story-can i have a little brook please...
Meanwhile the Brownies went to explore the grounds...

Um who's going to be here I can't finish what i was going to say without knowing that!

I'm a bit stuck on the same grounds... trying to rack brain but to no avail... don't suppose anyone would have a useful list?  (Actually, don't all the juniors get shunted off the island at one point as well?)

After the meal sat at fold up tables laid by the Brownies themselves Brown Owl stood up to announce what they had all been waiting for, the the theme and the sixes for the week.
'Right ladies, i beleive you all want to know that the theme will be great women throughout the ages. Joan of Arch six for this week will be Len Maynard as sixer with Margot as her second also in that six will be Holly Packard, Dorothea Edwards, Faith Hudson and Mari Right. Marie Curie is the next six, the sixer being Charlotte Small, seconder Con Maynard, Katharyn James, Gillian Green, Daisy Dalton and Helen Thomas. Emily Pankhurst is the penultimate six, the sixer being Joan Macbeth, seconder Rachel Dawson, then Molly Preistly, Ailie Russel, Daphne find, Claire Holloway. Finally we have Florence Knightingale, Vanessa Grey is Sixer with Victoria Conway as her second, the last four are Mary and Anne Young, Josephine Duffy and last but not least Caroline Just. I hope that is all of you, if the sixers will take washing up bowls from Tawny Owl as she provides them i will be most grateful, don't forget, more haste less speed...' and with that the young girls organised washing up and finished with only a small flood for their young leader Natalie Hardy to clean up!

I presume Xanthe and Chloe will be able to finish all this off by themselves   when they've come back from Brownie camp.

Why? Did the little darlings not have any adventures?

I found that sanity was a very precarious thing after helping out with Cub camps. ( I have two sons, no daughters, so Brownies & Guides are a total mystery to me.)

Being woken up at 3 in the morning because all the Cubs were playing spacemen seemed very surreal, as we chased them all out of the woods and back to their tents. (Surreal as in 'I don't believe this is happening')

Our Brownies are wonderful paragons (sp??? anyone?) of virtue!

My Brownies were beautifully well behaved, thankfully!

They are (and I admit that I may be a little biased) really nice children and they were a pleasure to take away  ;D

Didn't really have any "adventures" - some homesickness, some tears (oh, the tragedy of a broken "special pencil" when one is seven), a couple of falling-overs and a wasp sting, but on the whole quite uneventful...

And they got to see bats and rabbits, which for London Brownies is definitely something special... especially when you then top that experience off with having a sing-song and getting to eat marshmallows...

My first ever guide camp was a week long in the middle of a random farmers felid. There were cow pats, a river in which to keep the milk and a scary rope bridge the guider made uus climb over! I cried a lot of the time! ;)

I'm not surprised - I probably would have done too!  (Sometimes wonders why we stay involved in Guiding...)

I believe it was an open pit with logs/planks across that you had to perch on! And she slipped off and fell in. Yurk!!
(I seem to remember my friend saying that it was the last day of a two week camp, and the pit was pretty full! :o :o)

I only went to camp once, but I'm sure we put earth over the top every so often, and moved the whole thing sideways too.

I'm not really sure, I only knew about it through my friend. (Who being an evil big sister found the event highly amusing!)

At our guide camps, we had 'Toilet tents' which basically contained a bucket with a seat - at the end of each day the buckets were emtied into the ses pit! YUCK!

Okay, I admit that guide camp could be fun, providing you got to go on one with proper plumbing! ;)

SHOWERS! At Guide camp!!! Blasphemy! :)

You lucky lot! I don't think I ever went on a guide camp as a Guide that had flush toilets. But I tell you what, everyone thought twice about doing anything particularly bad - who'd want to have even one extra day on 'Health' patrol???
(i.e. - for those that don't know - emptying and cleaning the toilets)

Still, I did enjoy it.

Oh - the one pack holiday I went on as a Brownie, was to Pontins :)

Guide camp can be great fun!  Just depends on who you're with...  ::)
