Title: Boxing Day Advent Drabble - Take 2!
Post by Rachel on Dec 26th, 2003, 9:52pm
Carolyn's Part:

Nicola woke on Boxing Day with a sinking feeling at the pit of her stomach. She knew that there would be questions asked about her reaction the day before, and that she would have to face the consequences of hiding away and worrying everyone. She was at heart a good child, and was genuinely repentant about the distress she had caused to the family who had been so kind to her. ‘But I can’t explain to them, I can’t betray mother like that.’ Remembering Dr Maynard’s words of the evening before she remained in bed, although she could hear the household beginning to stir and footsteps going downstairs. She reached for her hairbrush and was sat in bed brushing her hair when Jack himself entered the room holding a small tray replete with coffee, rolls and some deeply purple blackberry jam.

“You look much better today,” he commented placing the tray on the bedside table. “Let me feel your pulse…hmm, and now your temp…show me your tongue.” Jack completed his brief examination with a sharp look at Nicola’s face and her general demeanour.
“I’m sorry to have caused you so much trouble yesterday,” she began hesitantly, “You have been so kind to me, and I spoiled your holiday.”
Jack sat on the edge of the bed and regarded Nicola gravely, “I accept your apology on behalf of all the family, so feel easy there, nothing more will be said by us. Miss Annersley wants to speak to you however. No, don’t worry,” he added hastily as he saw fear coming to Nicola’s face, “She just wants to know what is upsetting you. She is in loco parentis after all. That means she has a parental responsibility towards you whilst you are in her care. Now I will leave you to have your breakfast and get ready and then someone will escort you over to the school.”

Nicola was ready in short shift and was glad to see Margot waiting at the bottom of the stairs to be her escort.
“Come on kid, here’s your coat and scarf. Get them on and I’ll hunt out your gloves for you,” said Margot breezily, suiting the action to the word.
Nicola found herself whirled out of the house and across to the school without a chance to gather her thoughts. Outside the study door she paused and cast a pleading look at Margot who had been there herself often enough to know what Nicola was feeling.
“Chicken” she laughed as she knocked at the door, and entered as the head bid them do so.
“Here she is Auntie Hilda, all fit and rested.”
Hilda looked and noticed the wariness in Nicola’s face and returning Margot’s greeting sent her off, telling her that she would return to Freudesheim with Nicola in time for lunch.

“Now, Nicola, come and sit down dear, I think it is time we had a little chat don’t you?”
Nicola was unsure how to reply to this and covered her confusion by taking a chair and blowing her nose. Hilda seeing that she was not about to speak continued, “Dr Jack tells me you apologised to him for the fuss yesterday, and since he has accepted your apology we will leave that matter there. However I need to know what upset you so much. If it had happened earlier I would have put it down to your mother’s absence, but you seemed resigned to that. You have been here for a whole term now and whilst you have kept to yourself and been quiet, you don’t appear to be homesick. So, tell me Nicola, what has upset you so much now? I know the Maynards will have been kind to you, and Erica tells me that whilst she has been confined to bed over the hols with this cold, that you have been joining in with the rest of the family in all their activities.”
Hilda paused and waited to see if Nicola would say anything. The girl was silent, and Hilda was worried that she might feel she had a good reason for remaining silent and whilst casting round in her mind for a possible cause asked, “Did you like the present from your mother?”
“Oh yes. It was just what I wanted; she must have thought about it an awful lot. But then she always does.”
“Mothers are like that on the whole,” replied Hilda, “What about the rest of your family, do you have any younger brothers or sisters?”
“No, just me and mother,” Nicola was being short with her replies now, wary of what might be the outcome. Hilda noticed this and picked her words with care, sending up a prayer for wisdom in dealing with this strange child.
“In that case you must find Freudesheim very different, such a large family. How have you enjoyed it?”
“They are very kind, and have included me in everything, but I never thought that a family could be like that. They laugh and joke, and look out for each other. They fight and then make up, and it all goes on at once.” Nicola looked as if she found this slightly overwhelming.

Still Carolyn:

“Well yes, that is what family is all about. Tell me about your own, isn’t it similar, if smaller. You said there was just you and your mother, what about grandparents, or aunties and uncles?”
Nicola wondered how to respond to this and paused. Hilda noticed and decided that the time had come to probe a little deeper. “Nicola dear, I know that whatever is upsetting you has to do with family, and that you found being with the Maynards has awakened some uncomfortable feelings for you. I want to help you, but need you to trust me.”
It was the word trust that did it finally. “Trust, Family,” said Nicola with a hint of bitterness creeping into her voice, “My mother told me that I could never trust family and that we had to make our own way. That’s why she sent me here even though she can hardly afford it, because it’s her old school and she thinks that by sending me here it shows we are doing that.”
“Your mother is an old girl, why I never knew that?”
“No, you wouldn’t have taken me if you had.”
“Nonsense, we have only expelled two girls and I know that you are not related to them, nor are you related to the one or two we almost expelled. Even if you had been it would not necessarily mean we would not accept you. I do think you had better tell me the whole story, or I may have to write to your mother and request her to tell me as it is obviously upsetting you and we can’t have that can we.”
Nicola saw no way out, although she felt cornered and it was an unwilling telling of her story, with some fear of what would happen once her beginnings were known.
“My mother was a head girl here a long time, fourteen years to be exact. You weren’t in Switzerland then of course.”
“No, we were on St Brivals I believe.”
“Yes. My mother left unexpectedly. The school and her friends were told that she had inherited a large fortune from an Uncle in South America and that she had to go and claim it. You all seem top have taken that at face value.”
“Loveday Perowne, of course. I remember the incident. We did think it was strange, but we had the letter from her father and he followed it up with a telephone conversation and was most convincing. What actually happened?”
“She had become pregnant with me the previous holidays and was four months pregnant when she got home. It didn’t take long for her mother to find out, nor to realise that the school had nothing to do with it. They packed her off to South America all right, but the Uncle was not dead, he was very much alive with a ranch in a remote area. My mother was sent to have her baby there where no-one would ever find out. The idea was that I would be placed in an orphanage, but she refused to give me up, and once she had seen the priest and had me baptised there was nothing any of them could do.”
Nicola’s tone had been growing harder during this recital, and it became positively harsh as she continued, “The family were not pleased, to say the least. Mother wanted to come home, but she had no money and my grandparents would not even write to her once they heard I was still with her. They sent a letter to the Uncle saying that she had a choice and they would send her a ticket for one person to return, but not for me. Mother refused, and as Uncle would not help she went to work on the neighbouring ranch to earn the money to return. It took her five years, and I can just remember South America. When we finally got back to England her family would have nothing top do with her and in the end she got a job in London, used an assumed name and pretended that she had been married during the time she spent in South America. That pretence made life slightly easier, but not much. She has a good job now, but has to travel and her boss expects just as much from her as he does from the men working for him who have wives to take care of the children. He sends her abroad at a moments notice, and threatens to sack her if she complains. But that’s the industry; it is the same everywhere. Mother wanted me to come here because she thought it would give me the best start, and because she thought it would be one in the eye for her parents if they ever heard. She says she only got through those first years because of what the Chalet School had made her. That’s why I found the Maynard family so difficult, and why I got so upset yesterday. My family never wanted me, and tried to get my mother to give me away. They ought to be dropped off a cliff.”

Hilda had been silent during this tale, but once Nicola had finished and sat scowling, she rose and stood in front of the girl. Taking her hand she raised her to her feet and said, “I’m glad you have told me all this. It explains a lot. I will write to your mother and tell her that I know so that she can come and see you without the need for pretence. There is not a lot more we can do at the moment, although we can see if you are suitable for one of our many scholarships, which may help a little. When I’ve seen your mother once more we will see what else can be done. We are a family as well you know, and have no thought of rejecting you, or your mother whatever she might have done, she is still a Chalet Girl.”

My part:

Nicola felt comforted by the Head’s words but unsure now how to respond. She wondered suddenly just how her mother would feel having their private affairs discussed so openly, especially when Loveday had gone to such lengths to hide the circumstances around Nicola’s birth. Already Nicola thought she could see a change in Miss Annersley’s attitude toward herself, and being a sensitive girl, all her doubt and fear came flooding back. With a sob, she rose from her chair, and tried to run out of the room, only to discover Hilda had locked it using her remote locking device – a very necessary mechanism in a building where Joey Maynard was known to invade on a regular basis.

Yanking on the door handle, and screaming for release, Nicola failed to hear Miss Annersley’s footsteps come up behind her.
“Here, drink this my dear,” said Miss Annersley, with a smile that Nicola was suspicious of.
“I wont!” shrieked the girl, almost hysterical by this point. “It’s drugged! I know all about it! Mother warned me! She said ‘Never drink anything they offer you when you get upset’! I know how you drug all the girls, making them into good chalet girls by use of narcotics, I wont, I wont, I wont!”
On the last “I wont,” which was accompanied by a stamp of the foot, Miss Annersley tipped a small package of powder into Nicola’s wide open mouth, and watched in satisfaction as the girls eyes clouded over and she slumped against the door in a deep sleep.
“Thank goodness for that!” remarked Miss Annersley, who had absolutely no patience when it came to tear streaked girls, preferring the tried and tested method of drugs and hypnosis to overcome difficult personalities.

When Nicola came round some time later, Miss Annersley was back behind her desk, and Nicola was back in the chair, feeling groggy and with little memory of the earlier occurrences.
“Now my dear,” said Miss Annersley with one of her warm smiles, “Now that we’ve sorted all that out, perhaps you would like to accompany me back to Freudesheim? I’m sure our hostess will be waiting for us.”
Nicola stood demurely, and accepted her wrappings without a murmur, following her headmistress silently back to the Maynard home.
A raised eyebrow from Joey was answered by a quick nod from Hilda, whereupon Joey sighed with relief, knowing there would be no further trouble from this unusual girl.

The Maynard family had little time to spare on their guest as they continued with their festive celebrations, so the change in Nicola went unremarked by anyone, most people who did think about it put it down to Miss Annersley’s famed insight and compassion with schoolgirls, and were pleased to see that the Headmistress seemed no closer to losing the knack. Nicola did as she was told without question, instant obedience apparently her only desire. The only person who wondered at all was Len Maynard, always quickest to spot changes, and always the most responsible and competent of Joey’s children.

And me again:

Len called over to Nicola in the early part of the afternoon, “Hey kiddy, fancy coming out for some ski-ing practice with me?”
Nicola looked unsure for a moment, deep rooted feelings about spending out of school time with a mistress surfacing briefly, before the new top layer of her personality kicked in and she replied smilingly, “Oh yes please Miss Maynard! I should so love to!”
Len raised an eyebrow at this, but decided to leave the subject well alone until they were away from the house.

Away from the house, Len gripped Nicola’s arm. “What happened this morning?” she asked in a fierce voice.
“Why, I had a chat with Miss Annersley, and she helped me to sort out my priorities and work out where my loyalties lie Miss Maynard,” Nicola answered promptly and cheerfully.
“Don’t give me that crap!” replied Len. “Something happened and I want to know what! You have the same look in your eyes today that my sister Margot always had when Miss Annersley took her off for a chat in the study, and nobody ever knows what happens in the study! Now, tell me, what happened!”

Nicola opened her mouth to repeat the mantra she now knew by heart, but before the words had tiome to come out, a voice hailed Len from the tree line nearby.
“Len!” hailed the voice.
Len turned slowly towards the source of the voice, and saw the most gorgeous looking man striding confidently towards her. He had stereotypical dark locks, sweeping low over his forehead so he could casusally toss his hair back in a very becoming manner. His firm jaw line had the faintest hint of “designer stubble” but not enough to be unattractive, he was wearing classically cut good clothes, and smelt the way only a man can when he has come straight to the woman he loves from a shower.
Reg?” whispered Len, unable to believe her eyes.
“Yes Len, it’s me,” said Reg humbly, knowing he had given up the right to call this woman his own, but determined to do all in his power now to try to win her over again.
He dropped down to one knee and took Len’s hand gently in his, regardless of the cold from the snowy ground striking through his clothes. “Len,” he said as he gazed into her eyes. “Len, I…”

What Reg was was never to be known as at that precise moment he suffered a huge allergic reaction to the soap he had used and keeled over in the snow and died. Len, distraught and knowing at that moment that Reg was the only man she would ever love, fell to the ground beside him, clasping his hands in her own, tears pouring down her cheeks as she begged him to hold on to life. “Stay with me Reg,” she pleaded, even whilst knowing it was too late.

In a desperate attempt to help, Nicola grabbed some twigs and branches together, intending to make a fire to keep Reg warm, hoping that he might still be alive and only fooling in an attempt to get Len to reveal her true feelings. Nicola struck the matches, her trembling hands putting each match out as soon as she struck it. Seeing what the girl was trying to do, Len grabbed the box from her, struck the match and lit the fire, not noticing that Nicola was standing too close.

Within minutes, Reg’s body was engulfed in fire and Nicola’s prostrate form was being rolled over and over in the snow as Len battled desperately to put the flames out.

Len sat on the ground, holding Nicola’s still body against her, weeping bitterly that the child should have suffered in this way. An hour later her family found her, still on the ground, clutching Nicola’s body to her and wailing over Reg. Jack very carefully lifted Nicola from Len and carried her body back to Freudesheim. Joey put her arms around her eldest daughter and gently raised her to her feet. Len looked into the faces of all those she loved and allowed them to lead her gently homewards. Each and every one of them administered a swift kick to the charred remains of Reg as they passed, and Joey turned when they were halfway home, ran back to the clearing, kicked Reg once more and then ran back, satisfied that her daughter would stay at home forever.

I went out to the cinema with the kiddies tonight to see "Peter Pan", logged in to see what reactions there were ( I was awfully worried you would all be upset at the demise of Reg) and was told the TEM had munched the thread!

What is wrong with the board of late?

By the way, I think the onlypeople who would really like Peter Pan would be those pre-teen girls just ready to have their first real "film-star" crush! Too sentimental, too romantic (especially as the actors are about 12!) and not going to be in my "must by on DVD" category! Just my thruppence ha'penny worth!

And apparently I embarrassed my daughter while we were there. I mean, all I did was shout at a group of lads "Would you kids shut up NOW!" which shut them up and stopped everybody else in the cinema from talking - why would a nine year old be embarrassed by this?

Rachel ~ the eternally puzzled.

"As soon as wolf began to feel
That he would like a decent meal
He went and knocked on grandma's door
When grandma opened it, she saw
The sharp white teeth, the horrid grin
As wolfie said "May I come in?"
Poor grandmama was terrified -
"He's going to eat me up!" she cried.
And she was absolutely right,
He ate her up in one big bite.
But grandmama was small and tough
And wolfie wailed "That's not enough!
I haven't yet begun to feel
That I have had a decent meal."
He added with a frightful leer,
"I'm therefore going to wait right here
Till little Miss Red Riding Hood
Comes home from walking in the wood..."

"He quickly put on grandma's clothes
(Of course he hadn't eaten those),
He dressed himself in coat and hat
He put on shoes, and after that
He even brushed and curled his hair
Then sat himself in grandma's chair.

In came the little girl in red.
She stopped, she stared, and then she said,
(I'm a bit hazy on this bit!)
"But grandmama, what big eyes you have!"
"All the better to see you with, my dear"
The wolf replied.
"But grandmama, what big ears you have!"
"All the better to hear you with, my dear"
The wolf replied.
"But grandmama, what a lovely, furry, wolfskin coat...!"

"That's wrong!" cried wolf, "Have you forgot
To tell me what big teeth I've got?
Ah well, no matter what you say,
I'm going to eat you anyway!"

The small girl smiles, one eyelid flickers
She whips a pistol from her knickers
She aims it at the creature's head,
And bang! bang! bang! she shoots him dead.

A few weeks later, in the wood,
I came across Miss Riding Hood.
But what a change, no coat of red,
No silly hood upon her head.
She said, "Hello, and please do note
My lovely, furry, wolfskin coat."

Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf

Roald Dahl

As soon as Wolf began to feel
That he would like a decent meal,
He went and knocked on Grandma's door.
When Grandma opened it, she saw
The sharp white teeth, the horrid grin,
And Wolfie said, "May I come in?"
Poor Grandmamma was terrified,
"He's going to eat me up!" she cried.
And she was absolutely right.
He ate her up in one big bite.
But Grandmamma was small and tough,
And Wolfie wailed, "That's not enough!
"I haven't yet begun to feel
"That I have had a decent meal!"
He ran around the kitchen yelping,
"I've got to have a second helping!"
Then added with a frightful leer,
"I'm therefore going to wait right here
"Till Little Miss Red Riding Hood
"Comes home from walking in the wood."
He quickly put on Grandma's clothes,
(of course he hadn't eaten those.)
He dressed himself in coat and hat.
He put on shoes and after that
He even brushed and curled his hair,
Then sat himself in Grandma's chair.
In came the little girl in red.
She stopped. She stared. And then she said,

"What great big ears you have, Grandma."
"All the better to hear you with,"
the Wolf replied.
"What great big eyes you have, Grandma,"
said Little Red Riding Hood.
"All the better to see you with," the Wolf replied.

He sat there watching her and smiled.
He thought, I'm going to eat this little child.
Compared with her old Grandmamma
She's going to taste like caviare.

Then Little Red Riding Hood said, "But Grandma,
what a lovely great big furry coat you have on."

"That's wrong!" cried Wolf. "Have you forgot
"To tell me what BIG TEETH I've got?
"Ah well, no matter what you say,
"I'm going to eat you anyway."
The small girl smiles. One eyelid flickers.
She whips a pistol from her knickers.
She aims it at the creatures head.
And bang bang bang, she shoots him dead.
A few weeks later, in the wood,
I came across Miss Riding Hood.
But what a change! No cloak of red,
No silly hood upon her head.
She said, "Hello, and do please note
"My lovely furry WOLFSKIN COAT."

I have decided to leave my post cos I need the position  ;)

I am trying very hard to catch up on my old position with the most prolific drabblers, but some people post so often it's never going to happen!

And on that note, I am off to bed since I have to prepare myself to see the evil ex tomorrow when/if he shows up to collect the kids.

If he shows up it will being his total visits for this year to TWO and his total for twelve months to THREE. Isn't he just the epitome of a good father?

Rachel ~ not on amicable terms with her ex

Can't believe the TEM is still so active.

Sorry you missed all the comments about the drabbles.  Perhaps that's one thing the TEM doesn't like - us being appreciative of people's hard work.

Anyway to repeat what I can remember of what I said earlier - thanks both of you for your hard work all month.  Sending champagne, flowers and chocolates by way of thanks.

It seems to leave the older threads alone for some reason.  Why can't it eat them?  Would save us archiving or deleting them?

But then we might lose them before we can get to them. And we don't know that it doesn't eat them and we just don't notice...

Congratulates authors some more.  Especially liked the Christmas edition!

Amazed by body count restraint.  Under 1000 :D.

Likewise confused about the chewed fairy.  Did the TEM eat critical information (or fairies)?  Why did Nicola had have two fairies socked away in the first place?  And why fairies at all?  Did KB's face confuse the poor girl so much she's mixed her winged entities?  (Always has angel on top of tree, though concedes that stars are acceptable.)

Then again, perhaps the explanation lies in the pages of drabble catch-ups still unexcavated....

edited to repair shocking lack of grammar

Kathy see the chewed plastic fairy thread, and then the New Year editions of the story!

Why two faries in Nicola's bag? I don't think Rachel ever explained.

Rachel has said that her bunnies keep wisphering things about that one, but I think she is trying to get Con sorted. I did a bit of the chewed fairy, but only following on from Rachel's postings.

I'm only going to do some more if Rachel does 'cos I'm rahter busy at the moment, (no, not in that way) and have a SCS on my mind when I get time to write it.
