Title: The Chalet School Annexe
Post by Carolyn P on Aug 14th, 2003, 9:48pm

This idea has been going around in my head for a while and the plot bunnies have finally got me. I've spent all afternoon going through the books I can find for refs to the annexe and have started with this. Deep breath, dare I hit post :-/

Joey was taking an evening stroll around the Sonnalpe. During the day she had been unusually fidgety and seemed out of sorts. Madge had sent her to bed for a nap, but she awoke feeling hot and bothered and after abendessen had begged to be allowed to take a stroll. It was August and she had enjoyed the summer so far. It had been wonderful to see Elizaveta again, and the guide camp had been fun. Joey laughed as she recalled some of the more memorable events of the camp. She had found a pit and dug for Napoleonic remains, called Bill a ‘blithering idiot’ and had enjoyed seeing the middles attempts at laundry work.

The evening was beginning to draw in and Joey had walked along without realising haw far from home she had wandered. She shivered as she drew her blazer closer around her, and then turned and began to walk back. Joey mused over the coming term when she would be down at the Chalet School, by the sapphire blue lake, the Tiernsee. As she thought about the school she automatically glanced in the direction of the lake and found to her dismay tat she could no longer see it. A sudden evening mist had blotted it out from view and Joey was still a good distance from Die Rosen where she made her home along with her sister and brother-in-law.

When Joey reached home it was to find Madge looking out anxiously for her. Joey was shivering and wet with the mist and was thankful for the hot bath and warm milk that Madge insisted on. She fell asleep that night murmuring to the listening Madge “See, there’s no need to worry, I’m going to sleep like a good girl” These words however were to be the last she uttered …

…for a few days as the morning brought the sad realisation that Madges ministrations had come too late and Jo had a throat infection along with a cold.

A fortnight later Madge and Jem sat in the pretty salon at Dir Rosen. “I know you don’t like it Madge, but I am going to insist this time” said the doctor sternly.
“Yes, but there are practical problems as well as Joey’s sensitive temperament to consider and I’m not sure it can be done,” replied his wife “How can we arrange lessons at the right level for her when she is so much older, and won’t she be lonely?”
“I’m sure that Juliet and Grizel can cope, but when school starts next week Joey either goes to the Annexe or she leaves school altogether and remains here. She must be where we can watch her health”

Here is a bit more to whet your appetites. Any one know when Sybil was born, when would Madge have known she was 'going to be busy' ?

Joey’s reaction on being told the news by Jem and Madge took them aback. They had been expecting her to argue but she simply said “Good, now I’ll be near the Robin. I don’t think I could stand another shock like last term, and at least I won’t be head girl any more.”
“Well yes, but you will have some responsibilities young woman” replied Jem slightly shaken by Joey’s lacksidasical attitude.
“Yes, as the eldest you will have to give a lot of support to Juliet and Grizel” put in Madge, “They will rely heavily on you as the most senior pupil.”
“I knew there would be some drawback,” groused Jo, “But what will happen about my lessons, I can’t go in class with babes like Robin and Amy”
“No-one would expect you to” was her sister’s tart reply. “Juliet and Grizel will see that you get teaching at the right level, although it might do you good to join Robin at some lessons, maths for example” she added, Joey’s long lasting hatred of said subject being legendry.

Over at the new chalet that was home to the annexe another discussion was being held on the same topic. Grizel Cochrane had grown up alongside Joey, coming from Tavistock and having attended the same schools, albeit a few years earlier. She had grown into a hard young woman, being spoilt by her grandmother and then introduced to a stepmother who didn’t want her on the day of her father’s marriage. She had been troublesome to the authorities and had only mellowed due to her intense admiration of Joey and Madge and even this mellowing was only surface deep. Juliet had become a ward of Madges on the death of her parents in an automobile accident. Before that she had made her home with Madge, Joey and the Robin after being rejected by her parents. After obtaining her degree from the Royal Holloway Collage she had returned to head the Chalet School Annexe. Juliet had recently become engaged to a young Irish lawyer, Donal O’Hara. It was these two who were currently discussing how to deal with Joey.
“She will need coaching in Maths, which I will do, and will receive singing lessons from Plato, both chorally with the younger girls and as soloist in private lessons with him. Madge has requested that she continues sewing, which she can also take alongside the others, working on different tasks when necessary,” Juliet looked at her companion, “What do you say to taking her for some geog and appreciation/history of music”
“I suppose I must,” Grizel said “But I do wish Madame had just let her leave school, it will be so difficult teaching her, she can be a cheeky brat at times”
“You mustn’t let her hear you speak like that, it will set the wrong tone from the start. I don’t appreciate any discipline problems with Joey, but sorting out her languages, history and English will be another matter altogether.”
“Do you know what you will do?”
“I need to discuss it with Miss Annersly, but I was hoping that Charlie could give her coaching in History when she comes up to teach the other girls, her English will be taken care of by Madge, Miss Annersly and myself between us”
“How?” queried Grizel shortly
“We are planning to give her a reading list and then discuss the books between ourselves. Miss Annersly and Madge are drawing up the list, and we will set aside time for Madge, Joey and Myself to have coffee and discuss the reading in a civilised manner. That will also help Joey to form and express her opinion”
“Can’t say I’ve ever noticed she had a problem with that” commented Grizel with a laugh.
“No, seriously, why don’t you join us and you’ll see what I mean.”
“No can do, I’ve got to go to Spartz twice a week for a music lesson with Vater Bar and this term it will mean walking, unless someone happens to be going that way down the coach road. But I’m glad you have got Joey sorted.”
“Yes, except for her language lessons, and apart form doing classics with Stacie I’m stuck for ideas! I just hope Miss Annersly will have something to suggest.”
“I’m sure she will. Joey hardly needs language lessons anyway, I’m sure she could teach even us a thing or two. And” added Grizel “I am sure she will try. She was never backwards about coming forward and I see a fun time ahead with Joey here”

Grizel left the study and Juliet moved over to the window with its view across to the Tiernjoch and wondered what the term would bring. She had looked forward to being head here, and to sharing the pleasure with Grizel, but now with Joey attending unexpectedly and Grizel obviously feeling awkward about teaching her, Juliet suddenly had her doubts. Grizel could be so touchy and Joey was still such a child at times, she felt a sudden pang of fear about the whole idea. Joey would be the eldest girl in the annexe, and having been friends for so long with the two teachers she knew the situation could be volatile in the extreme.

David was born during "Head Girl" and Sybil during "Lintons", so you have a few books' grace, although Madge might know she was pregnant already. She would have conceived during "and Jo".

The first day of term dawned bright and clear. The hopes for a long warm autumn looked as if they would be fulfilled. Joey left Die Rosen in the mid morning, her trunk having been sent over to the annexe and unpacked the day before. She strolled across the alp and into the garden surrounding the annexe nonchalantly, with her hands in her pocket, a clear whistle coming from her lips. Joey surveyed her new abode, admiring the fresh clean frescos and wondering if any other pupils had arrived yet. “Josephine, come to the study please” Juliet’s voice broke across her reverie and she hurried after her new headmistress a look of consternation on her face at Juliet’s tone of voice.

Juliet sat behind the desk and faced Joey. “Take a seat” she offered and as Joey sat down she continued “I know that you are the eldest girl here, and that from now on you will work in a very different way, but I still expect you to behave in a manner fitting a schoolgirl, and a Chalet School girl at that. You do not whistle on school premises and you do not walk around with your hands in your pocket. Now, with that clear lets move on.” Juliet’s tone of voice softened as she began to outline to Joey the scheme of work she would be studying over the next term and the role she expected Joey to take as the most senior pupil. Joey had heard this the previous evening from Madge and there were no surprises for her, however she was surprised by Juliet’s able manner and demeanour. As Juliet spoke Joey realised how naturally Juliet was fitting into the role of head teacher and as she took her leave said, “I say Juliet, you are going to make a good show of this you know.”
“Go on you scamp,” replied Juliet with a grin “See if your room is tidy, and then find Robin and help to welcome the other girls.”

Joey left the study, giving Juliet the curtsey always given to the head teacher and after checking her own room, given to her by virtue of her age, walked to the pupils’ sitting room. As they were a small school a sitting room and a playroom had been made available to them, along with a small but well stocked library. Discovering Robin curled up reading Andrew Lang’s fairy tales and hearing that the coach with the other children was not expected until after mittagessen she took her own book, and sat down by the window. Her thoughts were not really with Pip et al in Great Expectations, a book she was re-reading, she was mulling over her interview with Juliet. Madge had told her that it was recognised that she was in an awkward position, having regarded the two teachers as friends for so long, however Madge had also added that she expected Joey to treat them as she treated Madge when she taught. Joey had thought that Madge was exaggerating, but after this interview she wondered how the term would go.

A few weeks later there was no question that Juliet and Grizel were making a success of the Chalet School Annexe. The younger pupils had arrived and settled down quickly. Robin, Amy and Signa had some prefect duties, ensuring their sitting room and playroom were kept tidy, although not doing the work themselves, and acting as trusted messengers for the staff. The health of the girls, a major concern and the reason they were at the annexe, was blooming under the strict regime. There was a careful eye kept on the girls, their diet was regulated and they were given lots of rich creamy milk. This along with regular early hours, refreshing walks and full lives was proving of benefit to all the girls. The healthy alpine air was being given every chance to do its work.

The academic side of life was well within the scope of Juliet and Grizel, along with some visits from Chalet mistresses and Madge teaching her great love, English Literature. The juniors showed every likelihood of being able to keep up with forms of their own age in the main school, and many of them were benefiting from the mixed age and ability aspect of much of their teaching. Juliet was discovering the joy of teaching and a skill at organisation that delighted those who had appointed her. There was just one fly in the ointment, Joey and Grizel!

If Robin & co. are prefects, then wouldn't Jo be HG? Did they have a HG?

I thought about this and decided that it would be difficult having Jo as headgirl with the others as prefects as there is about a 5 year age gap. If Joey was head girl then she would end up organising the others too much. What I envisage is Joey acting as like a special advisor to the the prefects, who at their age have responsibilities rather than any real authority. With this being the case there is no need to have a named head girl. If I carry on with this thread much longer then I may develop this a little more. I'm thinking a lot about the relationship between Juliet, Jo, and Grizel, which is the main story line. There are also possibilities for developing Madge and Jem more, and obviously throwing in the budding relationship between Jack and Jo. It was the term before this remember that Marie was noticed by her intended! :o

The trouble had started when Grizel entering the library early one evening in search of a book to while away the evening had come upon Joey struggling with a tricky maths problem. Maths being her weak point she was getting different answers every time she worked the sum, and none of them looked right. Finally in a fit of temper she flung her book across the desk, followed closely by her pencils muttering, “these are beastly sums and a beastly rule and I hate it!” It was at this precise moment that Grizel walked in and upon hearing Joey proceeded to lecture that young lady on her language and her temper. Grizel was renown for her sarcastic tongue and this occasion was no different. By the time she had finished Joey was in a rage and answered her back so defiantly that Grizel had no choice but to send her to report to Juliet.

Juliet had been at a loss as to how to deal with the situation. She knew it was a turning point for her as head and was determined to get it right and she sent up a swift prayer as she faced Joey across her desk. “Joey” she said finally “I want you to take this letter to the post, have a stroll around the garden, and be back in time for abendessen. Before you eat I want you to apologise to Grizel for your abominable rudeness. After supper you may come back here and we will review this maths problem until I am sure you understand it, that is all, now please go I am very disappointed to have had to speak to you like this and I sincerely hope it will not happen again”

Joey left and went on her walk without meeting anyone and was thus able to calm down and render her apologies to Grizel in a better frame of mind. Grizel however was not happy about the situation and told Juliet so when that lady came to tell her to expect Joey’s apology. “That is no punishment for her rudeness, she has always got away with it”
“She is going to spend the evening doing maths” pointed out Juliet gently “and she was already in a temper when you found her, a lecture on language was probably not the best thing at the time. Why didn’t you just tell her to pay her fine and be done with it?” She asked her friend curiously.
“Because.. she was just being Joey and I thought it was time she grew up a little”
Juliet didn’t reply to this as the warning bell for the meal rang and she left to straighten her dress and wash her hands, but she mulled the comment over thinking it boded no good for the future.

Since this incident there had been no major row, but Joey and Grizel were exhibiting a strained politeness that was sure to break some time soon. Juliet had sounded them both out about it, but neither was willing to talk freely about what was happening and so the happy atmosphere that had prevailed at the annexe was slowly being eaten away from the inside by the poison that had entered into their relationship.

Getting a little melodramatic in that last sentence - sorry folks  ;)
Going to get some Ben and Jerry's half baked flavour ice cream ;D ;D

This is really good and such an interesting idea. I think it is very realistic that there would be fireworks between Jo and Grizel.

Thanks a lot.
Here is the next bit
Just realised that this now 3716 words (thanks MS Word) Sorry!

The next weekend saw the first of the visits by the pupils from the Chalet itself. It was the first most of them had seen of the annexe and they were all longing for their weekend. They were to stay in a little chalet in the grounds that had been fitted up as a guest chalet. Rooms on the Sonnalpe were hard to come by because of the great demand by relatives of patients at the San. Madge and Jem had been of the opinion that it would be wrong to take much needed rooms, and so they had commissioned this little guest chalet. Amy would welcome her sister Margia and Robin was looking forward to seeing her old classmates, but not as much as Joey who was longing to see Frieda and Marie again. In truth Joey had found being at the annexe a little lonely of late, especially as she was no longer comfortable in the company of Juliet, and especially of Grizel.

The Saturday morning started misty and Joey was fearful that the visit would be called off as the girls were to walk up from the lakeside, however she need not have worried for by mid morning it had cleared and the view down to the lake was as clear as crystal. She welcomed her friends rapturously and after a whistle stop tour took them out into the garden. The weather this autumn was warm and they had been able to doff their blazers in the cloakroom and as long as they kept moving they were warm. Joey was eager to hear about the events at the chalet, and Marie told her about the bad beginning her cousin Thelka had made. She related the story of the tussle with Bianca over an exercise book and Joey looked at her in amazement. “I didn’t know you had family like that Marie, she is going to have a time of it until she settles down.” Marie regarded her with troubled eyes, “Yes, I am very sorry for my cousin, and for the disgrace I feel she brings on our family.”
“Nonsense” declared Joey heartily “Her upbringing was nothing to do with you, or with your parents either, you bear no disgrace, as you put it. Now lets talk about something else.”
Marie felt slightly better after this, but Frieda who had been with her all term was aware of how she fretted over it at odd moments and in order to give Marie something else to think about asked Joey to tell them more about life at the annexe. “How are Juliet and Grizel getting on?” she asked. “Are they able to make your lessons interesting Joey?” Joey proceeded to tell them about her studies and the three friends discussed their varying lessons until it was time for Kaffee. Joey was careful what she said, but Frieda was able to tell from her manner that something was wrong between Joey and Grizel and when Joey was not forthcoming about it asked her “Has something happened between you and Grizel, you were such good friends but now you have hardly mentioned her?”
“She is pulling rank a little that’s all, I can’t tell what’s got into her sometimes, she seems to glare at me every time I speak to her and Juliet. It is a problem because after the little ones go to bed in the evening there is only those two and me. I used to sit in their lounge with them, but since Grizel and I had a little row I don’t want to butt in on their space.”
Frieda true to her name which means peacemaker tried to pour oil on the troubled water, “Have you tried speaking to Juliet about it?”
“No, that has to be out of the question. I can hardly go to my headmistress and say ‘why does one of your staff glare at me and make me unwelcome?’ now can I?”
“Yes, I see your point now. We will think about it over the weekend and see if we can be of any help to you.”
“Thanks” replied Joey “Now, there is the bell for Kaffee, hurry up or those babes will eat all the cakes.”

The rest of the weekend passed quickly and the girls left on Monday morning without being able to resume their chat. Joey felt better however for having seen her friends and resolved to do what she could about her own situation. Knowing that she could do nothing about her rather lonely evenings at the moment, she left a lot of her reading until then and started to spend more of her free time with the babes. They were pleased to discover that in Joey they had an imaginative and ready storyteller and would compete to get her to tell their favourite tale or to make up a new one with their own suggestions. Juliet was pleased at this development in Joey, seeing it as Joey willingly giving up time to entertain the children and taking up responsibility of her own accord, something she had shunned in the past. Grizel took a different view however, thinking that Joey was happier spending time with the Robin rather than with her. She met Joey one day in the corridor, as Joey was about to go to the playroom and add another chapter to the latest thrilling adventure about their family of dolls. “I say Joey, would you like to come and read Wanda’s latest letter,” she said as an opener, half hoping to heal the widening rift.
“No, Marie has passed me all the news, and the babes are waiting for me to carry on with a story I’m telling them,” replied Joey oblivious to the undercurrents of the conversation.
“You seem to spend far too much time telling stories to those kids”
“Juliet said it was good to do so. I think it will help me when I come to write for them as well, those ‘kids’ can be quite critical if they don’t like your storylines.” And Joey left Grizel standing there a frown on her face.

Over at Die Rosen Jack Maynard was speaking to his boss. He was quite nervous, which was unlike Jack, but determined not to show it as he asked Jem for permission to take Joey with him to Innsbruck the following Saturday to choose some linen for his mother. Joey had met the old lady on several occasions and Jack said that he needed her help as he had no idea when it came to matching colours etc.

I will do some more during the day today, I'm thinking about Jem's reply.
I don't know if I'll finish it before I go away, I somehow think not. I'll have to think of a good cliff hanger and then go away for a week to write the resolution  :D <evil grin>

Here is a bit more. Sorry it is rather a purple passage, but I decided to give it a try and not wimp out.

Jack had known for some time how he felt about Joey, but had waited patiently for her to grow from a child into the young lady she now seemed to be developing into. He had approached Jem with some trepidation, not being sure how much to tell to the older man and had made a simple request. Jem looked at his friend searchingly, “Why Jack, do I detect something more here than a simple desire to please your mother?” he teased. Jack relaxed and stated simply “Joey means a lot to me and I would like a chance for her to get to know me for who I am rather than just as your friend. Nothing more, at this time, she is still very young in her outlook and I don’t want to rush her in any way.”
“Well, I have no objection to you of course, but I will not have Joey upset. You may take her, but take Robin as well. I know I can trust you with both girls and if you use the coach road you can drive to Innsbruck after Mittagessen, choose your present and then stop for Kaffee by the lake on the way back. Robin is strong enough for that.”
Jack did not push the point any longer. He knew that Jem was protective of his womenfolk and felt that gaining his permission even in this limited way was a boon.

Jem smiled as he went to the salon to tell Madge what had passed between Jack and himself.
“Oh, Jem, Joey is still so young” wailed Madge as she heard his news.
“Yes my dear” replied her husband as he took her hand, “but Jack will say nothing yet, and could you deny Joey the happiness we have known.”
Madge looked fondly at her young son, playing in the corner of the room as she remembered the news she had yet to tell Jem.

Juliet and Grizel received a phone call later that same day from Jem who told them just that he had given permission for Jo and Robin to go with Jack the following Saturday.

O.K a bit more, and then I must get lunch and pack the kids clothes, to say nothing of getting the camping gear out of the attic!

Grizel snorted when Juliet told her. “And which of the other girls has been given weekend exeats like that?” she asked pointedly.
“Oh, Grizel, stop fussing, there is no problem with Joey and Robin going out for the afternoon, and I have an idea for the others anyway. It is too cold for a picnic, at least for our fragile pupils, but we can take them to pick the winter roses that are blooming along the path behind Die Rosen, and Madge will invite them to nursery tea if we ask. You know the girls love playing with Peggy and Rix.”

This excellent plan was carried out. The young girls at the annexe picked their flowers and visited the Die Rosen nursery. Madge was not in evidence, nurse telling them that she had gone to bed for the afternoon in need of a rest. However she had left directions for them to be given a delicious tea and the girls romped with the babes to their hearts content.

During the course of the afternoon Juliet popped out to visit her other older pupil Stacie. Stacie had not been at the annexe as much as expected as her back was healing as quickly as the doctors had hoped. Today she lay almost flat again, having found the unexpected heat of this long autumn too much for her. Juliet and Stacie talked about London, which Stacie knew well from visits to the British Museum with her late father, and about the magazine of which Stacie was editor. The annexe had decided to join the Chaletian rather than produce a magazine of their own, and Juliet as head was keen that her pupils should give a good showing. Talk of the magazine led naturally onto the subject of Jo, and Stacie told Juliet what had passed between Jack and Jem. Madge had told her one morning when Stacie was unwell, and Madge had not really been thinking what she said as she tried to make conversation with the invalid at the same time as making plans for the forthcoming half term weekend. Stacie was too young to realise the import of Jack’s meaning, but Juliet, newly engaged realised immediately. She warned Stacie against discussing the matter and turned the subject to the coming half term celebrations.

Jo and Robin arrived back in time for abendessen, rosy cheeked from the drive along the new road and gave their thanks to Jack for a good time.
“I hope we can do it again sometime.” He spoke to both girls, but looked at Jo. She caught his look and was puzzled as to its meaning, but forgot as on entering the annexe she instantly became embroiled once again with Grizel.

Now you have got me going again I'm going to have to try and write around packing...these plot bunnies have a lot to answer for, I have quite a few more ideas for this, how about a vote, should I kill Robin off ???? :'( :'(

I've done this bit whilst eating lunch, now I'll see if I can find a suitcase to pack the bunnies in!

Joey had sent Robin to the splasheries to tidy up for the meal and was about to go to the little bathroom she shared with two French girls of fourteen and Stacie when she was present in order to do the same herself. Grizel spying her in the entrance hall as she herself returned from the office where she had taken a telephone call from Herr Anserl who wanted to know why she had left her music in Spartz the day before and how she expected to practice. Grizel was not far enough removed from her school days to have lost her fear of the crusty old master and she was seething at his words of rebuke, however had enough respect to hold her tongue when she was speaking to him. She had seen the three arrive, and the look Jack had given Joey. A knot twisted in her stomach and she didn’t hold back as she approached Joey.
“What do you mean, hanging around the entrance hall with Dr Maynard. What would a parent or guest think if they saw you there? I know you have more freedom here than at the Chalet, but please do not abuse it.”
“What have I done Grizel? Jack saw us home and we thanked him, that is all” replied Jo in some confusion. Grizel suddenly realised how Madge would view their conversation and felt a tad ashamed of herself. This did not help Joey however as Grizel would not willingly lose face.
“You know you are not allowed to linger in the entrance hall, it is not to be cluttered up with schoolgirls at all hours, you should have left Dr Maynard by the door and gone straight to tidy yourself, your hair is a mess.”
“Which is exactly what I trying to do until you came along and started accusing me of some unspecified sin, now perhaps you will allow me to go and brush my hair since that appears to be your main concern.” Joey left Grizel and proceeded on her way. It is doubtful that she would have got away with her cheek, but Grizel did not dare take the matter any further unless her part was made known to Madge. It was another point against Joey in her books however and the friends were growing further apart.

The next sensation at the annexe was provided not by Joey but by Robin of all people along with her special coutrie of Amy, Renee Loucoutier and Gredel Hamel. These four had been friends for a while, all having attended the main school. There they had been in separate classes, but at the annexe they were all taught together and were finding that their friendship was growing as a result. They had decided that the annexe needed a little livening up. At the main school they had enjoyed the results of their elders activities, here they realised they were the elders! As the term progressed and all the new girls had settled in these four felt that they lacked the stimulation they had received from their older sisters and put their minds to seeing how they could emulate them. Down at the chalet they had seen quite a few pranks that their elders had been involved in and could recall quite a few from the school legends, Elsie and Maria putting their heads through the chair backs the previous term, Joey flowering middles hair, and Grizel vaselining the blackboards although they were certain they did not want to go that far. They wanted above all to be original. “It’s no use just copying something that has been done already” commented Amy “I can just see what Margia would say about our lack of imagination.” Robin and Renee agreed and Gredel offered, “It would be nice to show them that being here doesn’t mean we are sweet little angels.” Robin especially was in agreement with this having suffered too often with comments about her angelic looks. And so the plot was hatched.

I have reason to believe that the meaner and nastier you are to plot bunnies, the better they thrive!  Lack of food, sleep, and probably air will just make them even more productive than they normally are - the only way to kill a plot bunny is to sit it down and ask in a calm, well fed, well rested voice "tell me your story". Sit back and watch the wee bleeders die then!

The first the school at large knew was one morning when they all sat down for fruhstuck (sp?) to find that the place settings had been set out with the cutlery reversed. No one thought anything about it presuming that one of the maids had a brainstorm that morning. However when Juliet entered the classroom she discovered her pen on the left instead of the right of her desk then Signa opened her desk and found her books on the opposite side to normal. It took Signa a little while longer than usual to find her arith textbook. “Signa, do you have a problem, ”asked Juliet impatiently.
“No, I just mislaid my book”
“Well you had better remain behind after the lesson and tidy your desk”
The lesson continued but during the course of that rather odd day just about everyone discovered that something had been reversed, mainly left to right, but ever so occasionally upside down. The girls entered their playroom after Kaffee to find all the pictures had been turned upside down and on looking for a library book Joey discovered all the Encyclopaedias had been put in reverse alphabetical order. The four had done their work well. They had planned exactly what items they were going to meddle with and then done so over the course of the day. The upshot of this careful planning meant everyone was confused. The final straw came however when the girls, being emboldened by the success of their plan tried one final reversal. That evening the all the pupils went up to bed to find their pillow at the foot of the beds, with the beds looking as if they had been made up the wrong way round. In fact the four had just moved the pillows and pleaumaux but some girls in their confusion stripped their beds anyway much to the glee of Robin et al. Grizel coming up to check that all were in bed was amazed to be confronted with a scene of rapid bed making. “Have you all taken leave of your senses. What do you think you are doing?” The girls looked around the dorm, at their feet, anywhere but at Grizel. She, waiting for an answer, which was not forthcoming, repeated the question at which point Irma von Rothenfel volunteered, “Our beds were the wrong way round.” Grizel found this statement slightly confusing, her thoughts going to the beds rather than the bed clothes, but Irma followed this with “Well the sheets and things were anyway.”

Grizel realised at this point that this was just another of the silly tricks she had been hearing about said “Finish quickly girls, it is time for lights out and most of you had not even said your prayers yet. I will be back in ten minutes and expect to find all of you in bed.” Then she left, and ten minutes later after ensuring they were all quiet went downstairs and told Juliet all about it. The two shared a laugh as they realised that their delicate girls had pulled a trick that was new and very thorough in its execution. Juliet giggled with Grizel but said, “I will have to take note of this officially now. It has been good fun but I can’t let them get away with it, especially as it was made so obvious to you. Messing around at bedtime has never been allowed anyway.”

The following morning justice was served. Juliet after taking prayers added “I expect any pupil responsible for yesterday’s confusion to report to the study immediately following bedmaking.” The four knew that they must now pay the price for their fun and trooped obediently along as soon as they were ready. Juliet was not harsh, but she pointed out their sins in tampering with other people’s property and with wasting time in the dormitory. Then she passed judgement. “You know of course that there will be a price to pay for this. As you found re-ordering so much fun, you can spend your playtime today in the library. Joey has emptied the shelves of the fiction section as they were in need of a tidy. You four can help replace them, in the correct alphabetical order of course.”

As soon as they had left the study she rang Madge to let her know the latest from the schools new addition. Madge laughed and then said, “It may have been naughty, but it was a nice naughtiness, not directed at any one person, just fun. It is good to know that they are profiting enough from the regime here to think of and be able to carry out such plots.”
“Yes, I know what you mean. Amy has always had a spark about her, but it surprised me that the Robin was part of this, last term she would never have been able to do this.”
“I agree. Jem is very pleased with her progress. I wish he were as happy with Stacie. It doesn’t look as if you are going to see her again this term.” added Madge.
“Poor child. If only she had learnt to control herself a little sooner. She is paying dearly for her mistake. Will she be able to take part in the fun at half term?”
“We hope so, to a certain extent at least. That reminds me, we will defiantly have Joey and Robin home, so you will have room for a few more in the annexe, would you like Sophie, Margia, and Paula?”
“Yes, but what about Simone?”
“She had better come here and see Joey. I hear along the grapevine that she is a little put out that Frieda and Marie have been up here but she has not.” And with this Madge had to leave.

More about the triangle later!
You havn't said about Robin, do I kill her off or try and turn her evil, or... well I can think of limitless possibilities, there is of course the route of making her an ordinary school girl. I also need to find a cliffhanger to leave you all on for a week.

The half term weekend came quickly after this. Many of the girls at the annexe had elder sisters at the main school and looked forward to seeing them. Amy in particular looked forward to telling Margia about their fun, although Renee was not as sure how Simone would react to the story. “Simone is always so correct, the only thing she ever did of her own accord was cut her hair that very first term.” The others consoled her, but Renee still approached the weekend with a certain amount of trepidation. It was not necessary however, Simone was too wrapped up in seeing Joey again to wish to spend time rebuking her younger sister, and just laughed saying, “You had your fun, mon petite, but then you had to pay n’est pas?”

Joey and Robin had decided to wait at the annexe to welcome their friends and then to walk back to Die Rosen with them to spend the rest of the weekend and Madge and Juliet willingly gave their consent. Grizel was not bothered at the time, but when she saw Joey and Robin walking back to Die Rosen in the midst of a merry throng she felt another of those pangs in her stomach. She and Juliet would both be on duty this weekend as they had guests and would take separate weekends off later in the term. She had heard Madge telling Juliet that Jack was hoping to take part in some of the half term fun, and the two laughed wondering what he would make of the schoolgirls high jinks. Grizel overhearing misunderstood and thought Jack himself was planning treats for the holidays and she was fearful that being at the annexe she would miss out.

The half term may have started with warm weather, but it changed with a vengeance that weekend starting with a thunderstorm and then a blizzard. The girls were delighted when it changed, delighting in snowball fights. Grizel was full of fidgets all weekend. When at the annexe she wondered what she was missing at Die Rosen and when at Die Rosen fearful in case Madge noticed the coolness between herself and Joey.

The weekend finished too quickly for many of the girls and it was difficult for Juliet and Grizel to get them to concentrate on their work over the next week. Both were keen that their girls kept up to their counterparts in the main school, especially as they would be spending the last two weeks of term down at the Chalet preparing for the school Christmas play.

“Joey! I’m glad to find you.” was Juliet’s response to finding Jo in the garden one afternoon after class. “Will you run over to Die Rosen with these letters for Madge. I forgot to take them last night and am rushed off my feet now. You may pop in to see Stacie and stay for Kaffee if you like, just ensure you are back in plenty of time to do any prep for tomorrow before abendessen as there is a radio concert of the Halle Orchestra on afterwards that we wish some of you girls to hear.” Joey ran to wrap up slightly warmer and proceeded to her sister’s house where she handed over the letters to her sister who received them gratefully. “How is Stacie today? May I visit her?” asked Joey.
“She is a little better but still tires very easily. Please don’t get her too excited. Spend an hour with her now and then come up to the nursery and have tea with me and the little ones.” Joey did so willingly. She spent an hour talking to Stacie about the magazine and the books they had been reading recently. Stacie listened to Jo talk about her literature discussions with Madge and Juliet wistfully. “I wish I could join those lessons, I know so little of literature.”
“What is to stop you reading, Madge will give you a helping hand if you want to know where to start.”
“I know she will, but I often cannot concentrate long enough to read well.”
“Hard lines old thing. You must buck up and get well as soon as you can.”
Joey spoke without thinking, it was easy for her to say it but there were days when Stacie felt as if she would throw something if she were told that again. “People seem to think that I could make myself walk and be strong simply by saying ‘I will be back to normal today’” she said to herself after Joey had left. “Joey ought to know better, she’s been ill herself even if not in this way.” Stacie heaved a sigh and blinked away the tears. She knew through bitter experience how badly a crying fit would affect her back and was determined not to put herself any further back “No matter what anyone thinks”

Joey was oblivious to Stacie’s feelings as she went to the nursery to join her family. She had a merry romp with the babes and then set off back to the annexe. The afternoon was cool, sharp, and with a nip of frost in the air. She strolled along the path without paying much attention, her mind elsewhere, “I hope Madge is OK” she was thinking to herself, “She seemed very tired this afternoon.” Her worries flew away a moment later, as did her feet. Joey started slipping and sliding on the ice, somehow staying upright, but in no control of her movements. She flailed around, arms in the air, scarf flying behind her when she managed to grab at a young sapling and steady herself. Joey paused and bent over to regain her breath, silently thanking her lucky stars that no one had seen her rather undignified slide when she heard a cough. “That was a lucky escape, your guardian angel must be busy” said Jack Maynard with a twinkle in his eye. “I was on my way home after spending the afternoon on the wards, but with your permission I will escort you to the annexe first.” Joey fumed at being caught like that, but had no objections to being escorted. If truth were told, she felt slightly shaky after her near fall and was glad of someone close by. Jack was the perfect gentleman. He did not refer to Joey’s accident again, and kept her entertained with stories of his days as a medical student, although he was prudent enough to edit his stories somewhat having no wish to embarrass Joey. They regained the annexe in a short while, and whilst Jack would have loved to prolong their chance conversation he was careful not to do so, saying a quick goodbye at the door when Joey thanked him for seeing her home.

It was to Joey’s misfortune that Grizel was also on her way home from a music lesson in Spartz at the same time. She had come along a different path but had observed the two at different points during their brief stroll. On returning to the annexe a few minutes after Joey she divested herself of her outdoor clothes and went in search of the younger girl. This time Grizel was sure she was right. What right had Joey to be strolling around the Sonnalpe with Jack? She was only a schoolgirl and should behave in a more seemly way. Grizel confronted Joey in her slip of a room and sparks flew. Grizel maintained that laughing whilst holding onto Jacks arm was not behaviour suitable for a schoolgirl and Joey saying that Grizel had gone mad and had a bee in her bonnet about her behaviour this term. They both forgot the difference in status between the two of them and were shouting when the door opened.

To admit Juliet looking her sternest. “Have you both forgotten where you are? Please go to the study immediately and we will carry on this discussion there. No Joey I mean this now go,” she said as Joey started to speak. The two went ahead of her and Juliet noticed with a heavy heart that they walked on opposite sides of the corridor. She breathed a quick prayer for guidance and then followed them. Once there she made a quick decision to talk to them separately to try and keep the pair of hotheads calm, although she felt worried that a member of staff could forget herself like this. She asked Grizel to go and supervise prep and then proceeded to question Joey until she had the full story out of her. “Honestly Juliet, I don’t know why Grizel has been so angry at me recently, but I’ve done nothing wrong” Juliet looked at her for a few minutes and then spoke; “Joey you have been in a difficult position here, I know you know this and it has been said before. Have you thought how difficult it is for us as well? You use our Christian names when we are together and as long as it isn’t in front of the other girls that is all right, but we both find it difficult sometimes to remember that we mustn’t treat you as we are used to because we do have responsibilities towards you. You are a pupil here and under our care. I cannot speak for Grizel defiantly but I think she may be finding this transition harder than me to cope with. Please bear this in mind and try to control your own temper. You might not be responsible for Grizel, but you are responsible for your own words and actions. With regard to your behaviour I have seen nothing to complain of and neither has Madge or any of the visiting mistresses. All we ask is that you continue to conduct yourself as a Chalet girl should even with the greater freedom you have been given here. I expect you to apologise to Grizel for your attitude to her and to learn and recite chapter 3 of the epistle of St James as a consequence of loosing your temper in that way.” A much-chastened Joey left the study and was not seen much more of that evening, although she did listen to the concert with the other girls she kept very low key.

Juliet found dealing with Grizel much harder. The girl was her friend of long-standing as well as being a member of her staff and after hearing Joey’s story she had an inkling of what might be behind Grizels attitude although she had given no indication of this to her young pupil. With Joey involved she did not feel able to approach Madge on the subject and was at a loss as to where to turn when a knock was heard on her door and Hilda Annersly, senior mistress from the Chalet entered. Juliet looked up in relief. “Hilda you are just the person we need now” she explained the situation in full to her colleague and saw her face grow grave, “That is a serious situation. I think you have dealt with Joey correctly, but Grizel has always been a problem especially where any emotional bonds are concerned, would you like me to speak with her, my dear?”
Juliet was relieved to know she had acted correctly and turned the dilemma over to her senior. Miss Annersly looked out Grizel, finding her in the staff sitting room and spoke quietly with on the responsibilities placed on staff shoulders and on keeping her temper, pointing her to the same verses on taming the tongue as Juliet had set for Joey to learn. Miss Annersly gained the same impression during that interview as Juliet had from Joey and before leaving she warned Juliet to look out for squalls. “Joey as you say is oblivious to the situation, and Madge cannot be worried with it now, so we must keep our eyes open and hope to quash any trouble. Don’t worry, you will be down with us in a few weeks anyway.” It was a good thing that neither of them knew all that was still to pass in those few weeks.

Is that enough of a cliffhanger? I have some definate ideas about those few weeks! :P I don't know if I will get to post again before we go in the morning, but my husband is demanding the computer now to check email and stuff. I'll definatly have a read in the AM and post some more if I have time and then I'm afraid it will be goodbye until a week on Wednesday.

Great holiday.
Some interesting things, including 4:00 AM visits from hedgehogs (think they could smell the plot bunnies!)
Hoping I have your permission to carry on this thread, where was I, oh yes, Robin...

Since half term Robin had been feeling confused. She had accepted the regime as necessary to her health, did not cavail at the rich milk and early nights, and accepted that she could not partake in the strenuous activities of the girls at the main school. However she felt that this was nothing to do with the way people petted her and seemed to think that she should behave in the same way she had when she was six. She had vivid memories of arriving at the school, being peered at when she lay in a teacher’s arms and of all the girls cooing over her. At six she had enjoyed the attention, she could pretend she was a princess or a doll come to life, but now she was twelve it was becoming somewhat irksome. Robin had decided that it was time to show people that she meant to grow up as normally as possible. To this end she rose before the bell on this particular morning and surveyed her hair critically in her cubicle mirror. She took up her brush with a determined look and brushing through her dark curls vigorously she struggled until she had managed to tie the curls that had always delighted the heart of those around her into two ordinary schoolgirl plaits.

Over at Die Rosen another girl was also feeling out of sorts. Stacie had enough of being told to ‘buck up and get better’ and when she awoke in pain this particular morning she had not been able to hold back the tears that mixed pain with frustration and on hearing nurse trot out the old chestnut again she had finally snapped. “I may have brought this injury on myself, but that is now past. I am following the doctors orders to the letter and do not need to told to buck up. I cannot make myself well. What I need now is sleep, please ask the doctor for something.” Nurse had sniffed at this, but did as she was asked and Stacie had the required dose that enabled her to sleep. The incident did not endear her to nurse however and Stacie was still resentful of the attitude displayed by those around her. She was not sure what to do as her aunt had made it clear that whilst money to pay for her care was no problem she could not cope with an invalid as well as four boys at home. Stacie had no mind to make her situation worse by trying to run away again, she knew how foolish that was. She was also beginning to see that she was learning valuable lessons in fitting into society and blushed when she remembered her term at school. She was however determined that soon she would stop being seen as a special case, someone who could be condescended to. She had no plan as yet, just an unease with the status quo.

Robin created quite a stir amongst the other girls when she appeared that morning. Joey especially bemoaned the loss of her darling’s curls. Juliet however just smiled and said “Quite a change Robin” and the other staff followed her lead. In the face of this Joey could do nothing and Juliet catching sight of Robin’s grin resolved to have a word with Joey. In fact she had been expecting a breakout of some kind from Robin ever since the prank earlier in the term and she was just grateful that it had been a more drastic solution to her angelic curls. She was not to know that as far as Robin was concerned this was the first step, not the last.

During that day those who had to deal with Stacie and with Robin in their different activities reported that they were difficult, moody and even just plain troublesome. With Stacie this was put down to her pain, but the staff at the annexe were confused over Robin’s behaviour. “I would expect these kind of moods from a fourth former, but at 12 she is far to young for that surely?” said Juliet thoughtfully when Grizel had finished telling her about Robin’s refusal to ‘find something to do’, which is what Grizel had been driven to telling her after Robin had wandered around the playroom picking up first one thing and then another, putting them down without much attention and snubbing her mates when they tried to involve her in a game of happy families. “I was expecting some kind of breakout after their little ploy earlier in the term. They all, but Robin especially seem to feel the need to spread their wings a little. Being in a school on their own has given them a chance to grow and take responsibilities that would never have been possible in the main school. This was something Madame hoped would happen. She told me that most of the girls have been protected all their lives and that with a taste of freedom in a secure environment they might respond by growing and developing into confident young women who know how to take care of their health whilst remaining in control of their lives.”
“Quite some aim” responded Grizel dryly. “But that doesn’t help with Robin.”
“It might explain why she plaited her hair though, she is trying to grow up. Of course spending more time with Joey means that she is beginning to develop a more mature outlook on life. Joey might baby Robin, but Robin will still pick up Joey’s attitudes.”
“But Joey herself hates the idea of growing up, look how she hated being head girl.” Responded Grizel.
“Yes, but since coming here she has taken responsibility of her own accord, look at how she helps the little ones in their play and even with their prep sometimes. Charlie was telling me the other day how they were getting a much better grasp of why things happened since Joey had taken to re-enacting events with them. That is why they have had the dressing up clothes out so often.”
“Joey herself seems to go from extreme to the other, she plays games with the babies and then treats us as equals, she forgets to tidy her room and her hair, and then she …” Grizel dried up at this point as she had been about to say “Flirts with Jack” and bit her tongue just in time. She had no intention of giving herself away in this manner. Juliet guessing what lay unsaid changed the subject and the pair spent the rest of the evening discussing the latest news of their school friends.

Grizel went to bed that night and lay awake turning the events of the term over in her mind. She admitted to herself that Jack interested her, she enjoyed his company and recognised that with his tall stature, thick black hair and deep eyes he was handsome. She also knew that he had enjoyed the time he had spent with the group that consisted of herself, Juliet, Joey and Robin in so many of the holiday’s. Grizel had always flattered herself that this interest was in herself, she had written of the younger two as being ‘mere babes’ and Juliet had always appeared to hold herself slightly aloof, and now she was engaged it was evident why. Grizel had assumed the doctors attentions were directed towards her, but now she was realising with a pang of jealousy that this was not so. She now had to decide whether to stay and fight for Jacks attention, stay but say nothing and leave the field open for Joey who so far still did not realise what was going on, or whether to leave Austria altogether and return to England.

I think I know now how this story is going to turn out, and the fate of most of the characters, but one or two still have to be decided. I also need to decide if I dare try to write the end as it came to me last night.

The following morning and days brought no peace to Grizel. She watched Jack and Joey spend time together, mainly in groups as the Sonnalpe community held musical evenings or took walks together, but occasionally alone as Jack was given permission to escort Joey to and from Die Rosen on a number of occasions. It was evident that Joey enjoyed Jacks company and was beginning to see him as a closer friend, but Grizel could see that Joey had no idea that Jack was interested in more that friendship. Grizel had been present at times when Jack had spoke of his dreams for the future, of helping to fight the white mans plague, of saving lives that would be otherwise be lost and of bringing medical help to those in the villages who could not afford to pay. Joey’s eyes gleamed as she agreed and Grizel had to look away as she saw the interest the two took in the beds funded by the sale of work held by the school and in their shared determination to help in any way they could. Grizel gradually withdrew herself from their company, as she could not bear to see their growing relationship. Juliet sensing this tried to provide support for her friend, but she was taken up in her wedding plans and Grizel found herself surrounded by ‘loves young dream’ as she cynically described it in a letter to her friend Gerry. Writing to Gerry was her only outlet at the moment as Gerry not having attended the Chalet was unlikely to let slip something of Grizel’s dilemma to the others. Gerry was worried however to see her friend growing steadily more bitter at the prospect of becoming an old maid whilst her friends married and wrote inviting her to England for the summer vacation. This was good, but being six months hence did nothing to relieve Grizel’s feelings. She was beginning to dread the Christmas holidays when they would all be together at Die Rosen.

Thank you all for youe encouragement, it helps when I wonder if I'm wasting time that should be spent on more important tasks, like housework, getting kids and myself ready for the new term ect. ect.

I know the ending as I said I'm just trying to work out the details, it was to be before the christmas play and the trip to Br... the lakeside place whose name I can never spell so havn't used! However I think that it will have to be afterwards as otherwise everything will have to happen too fast. I also want to include Stacie and EBD hardly let her out of bed during exploits which ties my hands a little.

Here's the next lot anyway.

As the time for the removal to the Chalet drew nearer the staff began to regret saying they would go. The pupils were to integrate into their equivalent classes and all mark books had to be sorted out so that lessons could continue in the mornings. Trunks had to be packed, as they would go home directly without returning to the annexe, but for a fortnight many clothes etc. would need to be accessible.  Juliet was going to Carrickglas to spend the holiday with Donal, but Grizel, Joey and Robin were returning to the Sonnalpe. In addition to this the girls had already started learning their lines and songs for the play and Plato was coming to give them extra singing lessons. Juliet and Grizel were taking half and hour to catch up on some marking when they became aware of an argument taking place in the corridor outside. Juliet rose wearily and opened the door. Outside she found Robin looking very angry and determined and Joey holding the draft copy of the programme for the Christmas play in one hand whilst the other was running through her hair in desperation. “Come in girls and shut the door please.” The troublesome twosome did as she requested and stood together on the hearthrug. “Now why are you fighting outside our living room like this?” Juliet asked simply. Robin and Joey looked at one another. “It is the programme,” replied Robin.
“What about it?”
“It has my name wrong.”
Juliet took the programme from Joey and looked at the list of characters.
“I see no mistake. It says clearly here that Love is played by Robin Humphries.”
“My name is Cecilia Marya Humphries. Why should I be introduced in the programme as anything else? Joey gets to be called Josephine.”
“But you have always been called Robin”
“It is not my name. I was called after my mother and she called me her Robin.” At this Robins lips began to tremble as they always did when she spoke of her mother. The fragile Polish lady had died when Robin was young and because of Robin’s own ill health she had never been allowed to grieve for her mother. Tears had been forbidden and she had been taught to control her emotions so as not to risk an outburst that could overtax her strength. As a result although many years had passed Robin had still not come to terms with her loss. Juliet knowing of the doctors’ fears was quick to calm the child. “Let me talk to Madame and I will see if anything can be done about it. If you wish to begin using your proper name you need to talk to your father and Madame and see what they wish for you. Do you want me to arrange for them to call and see you?” The tearful little girl nodded and let Juliet calm her down before going off to bed.

Later that night Juliet decided that she should have the talk with Joey that she had been putting off. She found Joey in the Library gazing out across the garden, her book in her hand. “Joey, you need to give Robin some room. She is trying to grow up, to become her own person. I know she is only 12 but she has spent much of her life around adults and has imbibed some of their attitudes.”
“My baby sister” whispered Joey softly, and leaned her head on Juliet’s arm as the elder girl slipped it around her. The two stood like that for a few moments and then moved apart as they began to discuss other things. They talked about the play and then their conversation moved onto the coming holidays. “Jack has been telling me about the plans for the children’s ward this Christmas. Many of them will have to remain here but Jack is determined they will not miss their celebration. He has arranged for the priest to visit on Christmas eve to sing carols and say prayers and then the nurses are to distribute a small stocking filled with nuts and candies to each child when they are all asleep. Most of them are too weak for a party, but he has ensured that they will have visitors and some of the Sonnalpe people are to go on the evening of Christmas day and sing.”
“Jack is a good man” said Juliet, “Many doctors wouldn’t think past the physical welfare of their patients.”
“His faith means a lot to him. Do you know he still uses the same Rosary everyday that his father gave him when he first went to school.”
Juliet looked at Joey, realising how close Jack and she had grown. She saw the colour in Joeys cheeks as she spoke of the things Jack had told her and realised that whilst Joey might not realise it yet she had found her mate, someone she could support in his life’s work. As Juliet left Joey, sending that young lady to bed, her thoughts turned to Grizel. She could see how unsuited Grizel was to Jack. He needed someone who would share his faith and his calling wholeheartedly. Joey might say still that she intended to be an old maiden aunt but Juliet doubted that very much.

Stacie had just been told that she would not be joining the trip to the lake for the Christmas play. It had been hoped that she would be able to go down in an ambulance and then be installed in a ground floor room where she could receive visitors and be wheeled in her chair to watch the rehearsals and the play itself. Stacie had been pinning her hopes on this because she was getting fed up of life as an invalid and longed for something, anything to happen to enliven her day. It was a big disappointment to her when her doctors announced that she was progressing too slowly and that they thought a few weeks of calm rest with no outside interruptions might be the best thing for her. They were adamant that the trip and associated excitement would be too much for her and may slow her recovery down even further. Stacie appeared to take the blow stoically, but inside was in turmoil. She wanted to get better, to get out of her little room, to start living again, to resume her studies, but she was feeling so pent up with boredom and frustration that it was difficult to follow the advice she had been given. She knew that in reality she had no option but to go along with what she was told, but she was determined that as soon as she was well enough she would somehow make her mark on the community at he Sonnalpe.

The removal to the Chalet went smoothly and the girls who had been there before took up their old acquaintances with much joy whilst not forgetting their responsibilities to their new arrivals. Joey was welcomed with open arms by Simone, Frieda and Marie and the prefects held a meeting to welcome her back into their midst. Marie noticed a change about her friend however; a more reserved manner, and a slightly distant look in her eyes sometimes when they were discussing events at the chalet during the term. It was only when Marie mentioned that the young Duke Von Und Zu Weithermier had been invited by her parents to their New Year party in Vienna that Joey seemed to show her old spark. “Don’t they object to the interest he is showing?” asked Joey.
“Mama and Papa have said that they do not object to us spending a certain amount of tome together as long as it is taken no further whilst I am still at school. But Joey I will be 18 soon and mama was married at that age.”
This was all that was said on the subject and the time flew past as the day for the play fast approached. The play itself was well received with a collection being taken for the poor of Innsbruck and the message of the play came across well to a thoughtful people used to mystery and nativity plays. All was well until after the play when Joey who had taken the role of St Joseph bit into a cream cake and let out a sharp “Ouch”. She smothered it immediately and on looking round was grateful to see that no-one seemed to have noticed, her friends talking noisily about the play and Matron being out of the room. Nemesis was yet to meet her however.

Jack had been present at the performance and together with his boss, Madge, and a few of their friends, was sat at the staff table. He had been turning to address a comment to Juliet when he caught sight of Joey wincing. Jack was not slow on the uptake, and being a doctor he recognised pain when he saw it. Not wishing to cause Joey any embarrassment he waited until after the meal when he was able to catch her on leaving the room and question her in privacy. Try as Joey might she could not hide her pain from his searching eyes and he soon had her admitting to a hole in one of her teeth.
“Why didn’t you say anything sooner?”
“Hate the dentist” was Joey’s short and rather terse reply. Jack looked at her with something akin to compassion and said “You fear the pain they might cause and even though you are in pain with your tooth at least that is a known pain and can be endured. The pain you fear is always worse because it is an unknown pain.” Joey nodded, close to tears with the stress of the pain coming on top of the emotional strain of the play. Jack wisely said nothing more, but took her to Matron and requested chilli paste and oil of cloves from that good lady and under her watchful eye he administered them to Joey whom he then sent off to bed, remaining himself to have a word with Matron. Matron later took up a cup of hot milk to a sleepy Joey, laced with a tiny dose to help her sleep. Matron had agreed with Jack that this was a good idea as Joey was very highly strung and should not be allowed to miss a nights sleep due to fear.
As a result of this treatment Joey slept late in the morning and missed the departure of most of the girls for their homes. She awoke to find Matron coming into her cubicle with a breakfast of rolls and warm milky coffee. “Awake at last Josephine, good, now eat this and then hurry to get dressed. Madame has taken your cases with her to the Sonnalpe and Dr Maynard is waiting to take you into Innsbruck to the dentist.”
“Jack is taking me to the dentist?” queried Jo, breathless at the amount of information given her by matron.
“Yes, he had to go into the city anyway and since term is now over Madame did not have any objection to him accompanying you. He will take you to the dentist and then escort you to the Menches where Gottfried and Grisela will accompany the two of you back to the Sonnalpe.”
Joey did as she was bid, although with a heavy heart at the forthcoming trip to the dentist. Jack had the little runabout that the doctors at the san used when business took them down to the lakeside or further to Innsbruck and he wasted no time on the journey, arriving at the surgery with time to spare. He waved Joey into the waiting room whilst he spoke to the receptionist and then went to join her. There was no one else in the waiting room, Herr von Francis being a punctual man as well as an excellent dentist. Joey was seated on a straight chair, biting her lip, her white face and highly coloured cheeks betraying the emotion she was keeping bottled up. “I say Joey, old chap, listen here. I know how fearful you are, but Herr von Francis is a decent sort and will do his level best to help you. A dentist may have to cause pain, but like me, he only does it to bring relief in the long term. I know that none of this can take the fear away, but chin up and it will soon be better.”
Joey listened to him, but was too strung up to reply, and was soon called into the surgery. She returned to Jack after a gruelling session with the drill and a new stopping in her tooth, but informed him that she did feel better and thanks for understanding. They then proceeded to the Menches apartment where Frieda commiserated with her chum over her ordeal and then Gottfried, Gisela, Jack and Joey returned to the car for the run back to he Sonnalpe. Gottfried was on duty at the San over Christmas and Gisela had decided to spend Christmas with just her husband and small daughter rather than remain with the rest of her family in Innsbruck. She had thus visited with them for a few days, seeing the play and accompanying her sister home before returning to her own little home on the Sonnalpe for the festive season.
Jack and Gottfried had placed the two females in the back of the car and wrapped them carefully up with blankets before beginning the drive home. Gisela and Joey snuggled down, glad of the warmth in the bitter winter cold. The schools first head girl looked at her young friend and commented, “You are feeling better now, yes. It was good of Jack to bring you down meine Kind, he is a good man.” Joey snuggled up and half asleep after her trial at the hands of the dentist replied, “Yes, Jack is a good friend.” And then she yawned loudly and fell asleep. Gisela did not awaken her, but she noted the change in the words Joey had used and mentioned this to her husband later. “Indeed, our little Joey is growing up, all of our girls are, as they must, even this young one too one day.” He finished his statement looking fondly at his baby daughter, asleep in her mother’s arms.

Why do I now have toothache?  ??? ???
By the way do we know the names of any of the other doctors at the San at this point? Thanks.

Don't worry, that is the last of the dentist as far as I know. I just felt that I couldn't write a story about Jo without including a trip to the dentist. Added to which it gave Gottfried a chance to make one of his pompus (sp? it doesn't look right) statements and Jack an opportunity to show his sensitive side yet again.

By the way Jack fans, I have things in mind for him, he will feature promimantly as the storyline develops.

Joey woke early on Christmas Eve aware of a growing excitement. She drew back the curtains and breathed on the glass so she could see out of the frost-encrusted window. The scene that met her eyes was beautiful. Joey let out a soft gasp as she surveyed the snow-laden branches on the pine trees; the icicles hanging from the nearby chalet eaves, the sight of warmly clad people beginning their day. She had spent last Christmas with the Maynards in their New Forest home and was glad to be back this year in what she mentally described as ‘Christmas card land.’ “Joey!” her sister’s voice broke across her musings, “Do have some sense please. Put some clothes on before you catch cold again.” Joey grinned at Madge as she skipped across the room to do as she was bid. “It is nice to spend a Christmas here again Madge, it seems the proper place to be.”
“Yes, it is rather impressive isn’t it? Now hurry down for breakfast, we have a lot to do today.”

The rest of the morning was spent in a rush, wrapping presents, baking, tidying, and all the things necessary to prepare a large house for the festive season. At mittagessen Madge and Joey managed to sit down for half an hour whilst they eat a light repast. They discussed their plans for the afternoon. Joey had agreed to stay in the nursery and tell stories to the babes whilst David had his afternoon nap, thus freeing his nursemaid to spend a few hours with her family. Madge was seeing to the flowers and sorting out rooms for their guests as Robin and her father, Ted Humphries were staying, as was Jack Maynard. “What about the tree?” asked Joey.
“We will decorate it tonight after abendessen, when the children are in bed, then they can se it first thing in the morning. Are you planning on going to midnight mass at the San chapel?”
“Not if you don’t mind? Jack has asked me to go to Vespers on the children’s ward and if I go to mass as well it will mean walking over there twice and I’ll be too tired for anything tomorrow.”
“Wise plan,” said her sister. Madge noted that Joey did not consider missing the earlier service, but did not comment on this at the time. She did mention it to her husband later on. “Yes, I noticed that they do seem to be growing closer. Don’t worry though I have Jacks word that he won’t rush things yet.”

Later on as Joey was putting on her outdoor things prior to walking over to the San she found Grizel cleaning her walking boots. “Where are you off to?” asked the elder girl.
“I’m going to the San to attend vespers on the Children’s ward. Do you want to come?”
“No fear, I’ve been busy all day and will go to midnight mass with the rest I suppose. I’m going to lie down for an hour now”
“OK see you later old thing.” And with this piece of slang Joey left the house and made her way to the San. Grizel watched her go on her way, bitterness welling up in her heart against the girl who seemed to have everything that Grizel wanted, a home, a family where she was loved and accepted, and friends easily made. This was made worse as on her way upstairs she overheard Robin telling Peggy “Auntie Jo has gone to see the children at the San because Dr Jack invited her.” Grizel fumed as she lay on her bed. Not only did Joey have all the security of a loving home and family, she also seemed to have Jack. The hour in bed did Grizel no good as she was unable to rest wondering what was happening at the San and if she should have accepted Joey’s innocent invitation.

Hope I don't get any of the catholic bits wrong as I'm non-conformist. This is the last Jack bit....for a while so make the most.

Over at the San Joey was stood in the doorway of the children’s ward enraptured as she listened to Vater Johannan tell the children stories of Christmas in his younger days, and then the story of the first Christmas of all. The children who were able had clustered round the old priest and the others listened eagerly from their beds. Joey listened as the priest spoke in a low voice, using simple language to bring home the wonder of the nativity to his little flock and then bowed her head as he spoke the simple office and benediction. Jack stood at her side and as they waited for Vater Johannan to go round blessing each of the children and distributing the host to those old enough to receive it he slipped his arm around her, pulling her close so that he could speak without disturbing those around them. “Thank you for coming. I wanted you to see this. Bringing the message of hope to these children somehow sums up Christmas for me. They might have very little in the world, and even their health has been denied them, but if they have the Christ child they have everything.” Joey nodded her agreement, “The very simplicity of the message reminds you how important it is.” she added. The two stood and watched until the aged priest came over to give them his blessing. Joey bowed her head for his benediction and then listened as the priest thanked Jack for arranging his visit. “It was my privilege Father.” he replied.

The rest of the day passed in a blur to Joey. Jack and Jem escorted her home, and after supper she sang the babes to sleep, helped to decorate the tree and was glad to go to her bed, as the others were setting out for midnight mass. “Go straight to sleep Joey baba,” Madge advised, “Don’t wait up for us or you will loose the benefit of remaining behind.”
“No fear, I’m too tired for messing around,” yawned Joey.

As Joey was not attending the service Grizel managed to wrangle a place next to Jack. She was however too taken up in her own troubles to pay much heed to the message of peace in the short address. As a protestant Grizel, like many of their party did not join Jack in partaking of communion. Madge, Jem and Ted however paid as close attention to the service as Jack did and on leaving the small chapel they were all silent, affected for a moment by the sacredness of the night. Grizel was oblivious to this and broke the silence with a comment to Jack. “Well now that is out of the way, how about a quick run home and a drink before bed?” Jack stared at her for a instant in incredulity and then remembered Grizel’s surface way of looking at matters and replied graciously, “That sounds good to me, what about you Ted, Jem?” They agreed and the group moved off. Grizel felt snubbed, but was not sure why. She walked home through the crisp, silent evening with the rest and was glad of the warming hot chocolate awaiting them at Die Rosen. They sat around the salon making conversation and admiring the tastefully decorated tree. “I say Jack,” said Grizel during a momentary lull in the conversation, “It was nice of you to invite Joey to the children’s ward this afternoon. It was much more fitting for her that joining the adults for a late service.” Grizel was intentionally belittling Joey and in an instant Jack saw it. He also realised exactly what the situation was and felt an inward quaking, as he knew he had to deal with it. “I invited Joey this afternoon as I knew she would appreciate the simplicity of the service with the children, this faith of ours is very simple at heart you know. I had no idea that she wasn’t coming tonight, Madge say’s that was Joey’s own idea. I am glad that she is adult enough to realise that there are limits as to what she is physically capable of, although I would have been glad to see her here with us.” Grizel’s eyes blazed as she realised that Jack was telling her where his interests lay and she made a sharp retort “A child for a childish man I suppose.” She was not to be allowed the victory of the last word however as Jack merely smiled and said “Childlike, my dear, childlike.” before he moved over to join the other men.

Madge had retired to bed immediately on returning from the service and so there was no one around to give Grizel any comfort and she went to bed and passed a restless night. Christmas day was full of frolics and all concerned had a great deal of fun, even Grizel who was tired from her night of tossing and turning and Stacie who was only allowed up in her chair for a short time.

Boxing day began with an early morning phone call for Madge. “I’ve left Carrickglas early. I’m in Innsbruck, can I come up.”

For those of you with little patience here is a little more. A very little more...

Madge left the telephone with a concerned look. Juliet had refused to say on the phone why she had come home sooner than anticipated and in the end Madge had given up trying. She despatched Jem to Innsbruck in the runabout and went to arrange for a bed to be made up for Juliet. The poor girl must have travelled through Christmas to be ringing from Innsbruck at that hour and would be exhausted after the journey. As she busied herself Madge’s mind worked through possible reasons for Juliet’s sudden appearance. Nothing seemed likely however and Madge knew she must just possess her soul in patience.

She had to wait longer that she thought. Madge, Joey and Grizel were ready to welcome Juliet when she arrived, but Jem brought her in and silenced the women with a look. “Not now,” he said to his wife, “Juliet is all in and must go to bed with a light meal immediately.” Madge took a closer look at the wan face before her and agreed. She accompanied Juliet upstairs to the room she normally occupied and left her to get into bed whilst Madge saw to obtaining a tray of soup and rolls. That done she insisted on the girl eating it before lowering the light and leaving the room. “Madame,” whispered Juliet softly as that person stood by the door, “Thank you for being here.”

It was a further 24 hours before the questions regarding Juliet’s appearance were solved. During that time she slept soundly, relieved at finding her refuge at last. On the day following her arrival she finally rose, and having made her toilet and dressed sought out Madge in her own little room. Madge welcomed her, and bade her sit down besides her. Juliet heaved a sigh and said, “May I speak with you?”
“Of course you may, but don’t feel rushed, we will wait for you.”
“I’ve broken off my engagement”
“My dear, are you sure, that is a serious thing to do.”
“Donal and I agreed it was for the best, we want different things out of life. Oh, we like each other and have had a lot of fun, but when it comes to the things that matter I can’t spend the rest of my life married to a man who expects me to do nothing but host his dinner parties and bear his children. Donal is an ambitious man and I just can’t meet his expectations. We had a long talk about it on Christmas Eve morning and agreed amicably that this was the right course of action. I had to leave though, I couldn’t stay in his family home over the holidays.”
“Well you are welcome here you know that. This is your home and Jem and I are still your guardians for a few years yet. If you are sure you are right then we will support you in this decision, it sounds as if you have thought it through.”
“I have, this was on my mind before I left here.”
“I’m glad it was not a snap decision, but I know you better than that. What do you wish to do about telling the others?”
“Would you mind telling them, I don’t feel able to face all their questions just yet. Please ask them not to mention it.”
“I will do that, but Juliet, a good many people knew about your engagement, you will have to face their questions sooner or later.”
“I know, but I want to catch my breath a little first, please ask them to give me some room.”

Madge left Juliet and went to do as she had requested. Joey let out a long whistle, “Holy Moses,” she exclaimed, “I never expected that. Is she all right?”
“Please watch your language Josephine. Juliet will recover in time, but please don’t talk to her about it, she wants some peace and quiet.” Grizel had a different reaction “Probably for the best, men cause nothing but trouble most of the time.” Madge looked at her in consternation. She knew that her former head girl, and one of her more troublesome girls was not happy with her lot in life but had hoped that she had become reconciled to her fate. Madge felt she had done her best to provide Grizel with a secure base for what Madge regarded as her second home, but now she feared that she had let Grizel slip through her fingers and become bitter before her time. She could not fathom where Grizel’s hatred of men appeared to have come from though. The girls had always had a relaxed relationship with the few men Jem allowed into the family circle. She caught her breath at this thought, had Grizel fallen for Jack? Madge did not say anything then as she was not sure she was right and did not want to make the situation worse but she resolved to watch the girl closely.

Juliet had left Madge and gone down to the salon with a book in her hand. It is doubtful that she read anything however as her mind was back on that morning at Carrikglas. Donal had been scathing when she tried to explain how she wanted more from life than just furthering his career. She had not explained everything to Madge, but the situation had come to a head when Donal had asked her to leave the Annexe at Easter and come to Ireland. He knew they could not marry immediately as he had not yet the means to support her, but he wanted her to spend time with his mother and to make contacts in the Dublin society in which they would be moving after their marriage. He referred to her current position as ‘biding time’ and said that she would be much more useful finding her place in society than in ‘pandering to fragile girls supposed delicacies’ Juliet had found this wounding and was unsure now as to what she should be doing with her life. She didn’t feel she could seek advice from Madge, as that lady was doing exactly what Juliet didn’t want to do.

Over the next few days the Die Rosen folks had a quiet time. Juliet was rather introspective and the others allowed her some space. Grizel was in a touchy mood, avoiding Jack rather pointedly and being very off hand with Joey. Madge watched this with troubled eyes, but saw no opportunity to speak to her. Joey was affected by the uneasy atmosphere and spent much of her time reading. Stacie was also proving a problem. Since Christmas she had improved and was now able to join the family from mid morning till after Kaffee and there was talk of her being able to attend the annexe on a more permanent basis after the holidays. Stacie herself however did not seem to rejoice in this in the way they expected. She had never been taught self-control before coming to the chalet and found it difficult to keep her real feelings from showing through. She was pleased at her recovery but unhappy at the talk around her about her improvement being because of a change in her attitude, or due to the grace of God. Stacie may have learned some valuable lessons about how to deal with those around her, but she was far from being in agreement with them. Stacie had changed since her accident, but not as far as the Russells appeared to think. She had no intention of running away any more, but had a determination to show people that life was not as straightforward as they thought.

Don't know how much more I'll be able to post tonight. The next bit is going to take some working on. It won't be the most difficult to write, that comes later, but it is harder in terms of getting everyone in the right place, doing the right thing at the right time. I'm going to have to plan out exactly how to get the situation I want.

*Punches air with fist* I knew it!!!

This stuff with Stacie is really good too - EBD never really goes in to how frustrating it must have been for her, and of course, her upbringing won't have helped her much.

Good for you clare. I thought I was being rather predictable. Not quite finished with Juliet yet.

A little more to whet your appitites.

Stacie started that very day when Robin came to her room after Abendessen to say goodnight. She had noticed that the little girl had seemed rather out of sorts all day and more out of curiosity than anything else was moved to ask her what was the matter. “Nothing really,” replied Robin, “It’s just that I’m fed up of everyone treating me like a baby. Look at these dresses that Auntie Madge makes me wear, they still have pinafores, Joey never wore a pinny at my age.” Stacie regarded the small girl, an idea forming in her mind. “I had noticed that. You should stand up for yourself a bit more. No I don’t mean being cheeky,” she said as Robin made to interrupt, “But you could ask to be included when they buy your clothes. You could also use your real name instead of that baby ‘Robin’.”
“I don’t know, papa likes to call me Robin.”
“That is no reason for everyone else to do so is it?”
“No, I suppose not, and it is babyish.”

The family were astounded the next morning at breakfast when Robin calmly announced that from now on she would like to use her Christian name, Cecilia Marya, instead of Robin. “But it’s such a mouthful,” protested Joey.
“Cecilia is a pretty name” added Madge doubtfully, “But so is Robin, and that is what your father uses.”
“That doesn’t mean the rest of you should.” Robin stuck her chin out defiantly and buttered her toast. “I will consult papa of course, but I would be glad if you could try and remember my real name at least some of the time.”
Madge and Juliet glanced at each other. They had discussed this with Te, Robin’s father, after the fuss Robin had made over the programme for the Christmas play. They had expected this request to come soon and had already decided that they were going to allow it. Robin must discuss it with her father first though.

Stacie heard about the Robin’s request when she was wheeled in later in the morning. A queer smile hovered around her lips for a moment and then she simply said, “It was to be expected, she is hardly a kid any more.” She was pleased; the first step in her campaign had been taken. She was careful to seek out Robin later in the day and congratulate her. “You need to look at the rest of your life too and see where else you feel you are being babied. Don’t rush but don’t let the momentum go either, by the time you go back to school you want everyone here treating you like any other 12 year old then Juliet and Grizel will have to carry it on.”

The following day was New Years Eve and whilst no parties were planned the Die Rosen folks along with Gottfried and Grisela were planning on seeing the New Year in together. None of the three doctors was on call, that honour falling to another young doctor, Bruno von Alhen. They all knew though that in an emergency any of them could end up being called upon, and being the men they were they would not refuse. The group had gathered in the evening and had been singing, Joey’s golden voice being much in demand. She had just finished a rendition of Schubet’s  ‘Hark the Lark’ when she caught sight of Madge looking particularly tired. She made to move over to her side but Madge waved her away, saying, “Sing one more for me please Joey. I would love to hear the Shepherds cradle song.” Joey sang her sister’s request unaccompanied, her voice clear and her listeners silent as she sang the simple song true and clear. When she had finished there was a brief silence then Joey saw Madge wince. “Madge!” she exclaimed. At this Jem and Jack turned and saw Madge clutch at her stomach and turn white. Jem lifted her feet onto the sofa and curtly ordered the rest of the party out of the room, requesting Jack to remain.

“Grisela, Gottfried, what is happening?” cried Joey wildly as they entered the study where they had all retreated to. “I don’t know for sure, but we must hope and pray that our dear Madame is restored to health,” replied Gottfried heavily. Grisela went to her friend and placed an arm around her, “Come my Joey and sit with me whilst we wait for news.” Joey pushed her friend off, unable to sit and paced the room anxiously, jumping at every sound and casting worried glances at the door frequently.

Hang on, Sybs was born just before Camp - wasn't she?

If so, then this can't be that...

but if this is the term the annexe opened, then it's set just after 'and jo'- Sybs was born at the end of lintons

So who was born in "and Jo"? Someone was...or was it just that Jo was relieved when she returned having seen Robin?

Ray *still conffuzzled but agreeing on account of having now remembered who was at the naming party*

Sybil it is. She was born during Lintons. The naming party is at half term. I'm not sure if this is Lintons or rebel, I don't have a hardback.

In 'and Jo' it is Robin who is ill and Jo is relieved that she is OK.

This story commenced following on from Camp and has just had the term of Exploits and the christmas following.

I think I now need to re-read my copy of Lintons/rebel as this looks like it will go into the next term if it is to be played out properly. Hmm, how could the Lintons stay at Die Rosen with Madge in her present state???

Joey continued her pacing and her friends let her be, sensing that to try and contain her would cause more problems. The door opened and Joey flung herself at Jack as he entered, “Tell me,” she demanded, “I must know what is happening.” Jack took hold of her arms, “Joey, calm
