Title: Anna escapes Post by PatW on Nov 27th, 2003, 9:31am This is as far as I got last night! Anna Pfeiffen looked around at the mess that littered the great Hall of the Chalet School. All about were signs of hurried departure, papers lying abandoned on the floor, rugs rucked up or twisted out of position. Voices echoed down the corridors, as men in uniform went from room to room, searching for only they knew what. Only the day before, the last of the mistresses had left for England and safety form the Nazi menace that had swept across her beloved Austria, and poor Anna felt lost and bewildered, grateful for the presence of the American beside her. “What will you do now, Anna? You sure can’t stay here; the authorities are taking this over as an annexe to the San. Do you have anywhere to go?” “Nein, mein Herr,” she replied. “I could, perhaps, go to my family in Briesau, but there are many of them, and there is little room. I would that I could join Fraulein Joey, but I have no papers. I do not think that I will be able to get them now.” “No, Anna, that sure will be hard. Maybe I can help though. You go down to your family for a time, and I reckon l’ll see what I can do.” “Danke, meine Herr. I will go today. I have no wish to remain here with these soldiers.” With those words, Anna turned and hurried to her room, packed her belongings and was on her way down the steep path to the lakeside within the hour. Mr Flower, for it was he who Anna had spoken to, left the school buildings, sighing for the changes that had come to it. Outside the front door stood his car, guarded by a German soldier, and he thanked the man before climbing into the driving seat and departing for Innsbruck. Once there, he had sundry meetings with his Consul, which resulted in papers for Anna, stating that she was a distant cousin of the Flowers, who had been caught in Austria by the Anschluss. These he brought to Anna himself, as he had business in the area. “I’m sorry, Anna, but I must leave you to make the journey yourself. I cannot leave Austria until I have dealt with a great many business matters. I can give you enough money to get to England, though. Will you be able to manage?” “Ja, I will manage, danke. I will get to England or die trying.” Anna had very little that she wished to take with her, rightly guessing that she would be far better to travel as lightly as possible. The less attention she drew to herself, the safer she would be. Felling far from the brave front she was portraying, Anna dressed herself carefully, with layers of clothing, and her valuables sewn into the linings of various garments. Then, looking much bulkier than normal, she left her family home and set off for the lake steamer, and the little train down to Spartz. Her great adventure had begun. The first part of the journey was familiar, as Anna had visited Innsbruck before. Once there, she found her way across the great concourse to the ticket office. |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by COS on Nov 27th, 2003, 10:33am Excellent start Pat. 8oo Do we get any more or do we have to wait until February when next FOCS mag is out? :'( Caroline |
||
Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by PatW on Nov 27th, 2003, 11:03am I only started writing it last night! FOCS know nothing about it yet! |
||
Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by KB on Nov 27th, 2003, 11:07am Pat, this is an excellent beginning. I would only make one comment - that Austria no longer existed after the Anschluss. It was part of the Greater German Reich. *waits eagerly for more* |
||
Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by Abi on Nov 27th, 2003, 11:10am Ooooh, this is an exciting start Pat. Please write more soon. *horrified at the thought of having to wait till Feb for more* |
||
Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by PatW on Nov 27th, 2003, 11:14am I know Austria became part of the Reich, but I suspect that Anna, and a lot of others, would still feel Austrian, and refer to themselves as such. |
||
Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by KB on Nov 27th, 2003, 11:18am They might, but it's unlikely the man at the ticket office would. He would almost certainly have been a German. |
||
Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by PatW on Nov 27th, 2003, 11:29am Would they have replaced local people so quickly? A ticket clerk is pretty low down in the pecking order, but if they did, there's obviously no problem with changing it. It's one of the advantages to posting it first!! |
||
Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by KB on Nov 27th, 2003, 11:38am Actually, yes, as it would be a job that would catch people trying to leave the country without the correct papers (as is happening here). And even if the person was Austrian, there would almost certainly be at least one Gestapo officer nearby, so the man would be unlikely to use unofficial titles. |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by PatW on Nov 27th, 2003, 12:39pm I've changed the first post a little, and here are the edits, plus some new bits. . All around her were men in unfamiliar uniforms, and she eyed them warily. As she queued to buy her ticket, she noticed that there were more people standing around than she was sued to seeing, and suspected that they were watching the crowds. When she arrived at the head of the queue, she asked the clerk for a ticket to Paris. The man eyed her with suspicion. “Why do you wish to travel there, Fraulein? You are of this part of the Reich, yes? You would do well to stay.” The accent was clearly German, not Austrian, and made Anna feel as if she had been discovered. “I go to visit my cousins from America who are visiting Paris. See, I have my papers. Why should I not go?” Behind the counter, a man in a black uniform, which she was already learning to identify with the dreaded SS, moved to the side of the clerk. Her knees were shaking, but she managed to keep her voice calm. “I have asked for a return ticket, and shall be coming back next week. My relatives do not have the time to visit me here, as they are in France on business.” Anna could feel the people around her staring at her. Some seemed sympathetic, but most were echoing the suspicion of the officials. The ticket clerk glanced up at the man at his side, who nodded slightly. “Very well, Fraulein. I will issue you the ticket. But remember that all must work for the greater good, and your cooperation is expected in this as in all else.” “Danke sehr. I will remember.” Anna took her tickets and papers and turned away from the ticket office with no little relief. She found that she was shaking, and gave herself a mental shake. She must look perfectly normal and innocent, or she would be suspected. |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by PatW on Nov 27th, 2003, 3:20pm Having found the correct platform, she stood by herself awaiting the arrival of the train. Here as elsewhere, there were more travellers in uniform than anyone else, and Anna felt herself to be a little conspicuous. Finally the train pulled into the station, and she climbed on board and settled herself into a seat in an open carriage. Just as the train was starting to move, a family of four people – mother, father, and two girls – scrambled into the train, and settled themselves down not far from Anna. They looked as if they had had a fright, and the parents showed relief at being safely on the train. They also did not seem to have very much luggage, but Anna reflected that they may well be only travelling a short distance. The train was picking up speed, and she forgot the late arrivals as she watched the countryside flash by. She was already farther from her home than she had ever been before, and her excitement at the new experiences vied with her sadness at leaving home, and her fear of what might happen. The day passed slowly as the train drew nearer the French border. People had left or joined the train at several stations, but the little family stayed where they were. Shortly after the train pulled out of the last station before the border, Anna became aware of a little flurry of activity behind her. Turning around, she saw a train official, accompanied by a couple of soldiers, checking passengers papers and tickets. |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by PatW on Nov 27th, 2003, 4:22pm Having already passed inspection at Innsbruck station, Anna felt fairly confident about passing this one. When the group reached her seat, she passed up her ticket and papers, and managed a slight smile. “Why are you travelling to Paris, Fraulein?” “I have American relatives who are there on business. I am visiting them as they do not have the time to come to Aus.. my home to see me.” The ticket inspector looked through her papers very carefully, flicking backwards and forwards through them, and Anna became a little concerned. “Is there a problem?” she asked. |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by PatW on Nov 30th, 2003, 4:02pm “I think all is in order here, Fraulein. You understand, we have to be very careful these days.” “Of course. This was explained when I purchased my ticket in Innsbruck.” Anna received her papers from the officer with an inward sigh of relief. And busied herself by putting them safely away. In the meantime, the group had reached the family seated a little way down the coach. Anna was distantly aware of a similar conversation that which she herself had had, but let the voices pass over her as she stared out of the window at the passing scenery. The countryside was a mixture of woodlands and farms, with picturesque houses and small villages dotted around. The train was travelling fast, and Anna felt happy that every mile was bringing her nearer to the French border and safety. Presently she became aware that the little group of officials were still dealing with the family. Voices were becoming a little louder, on both sides, and she could detect a note of fear in that of the Father. “But I do not understand,” she heard, “What is the matter with our papers?” |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by PatW on Dec 1st, 2003, 11:46am She glanced across the carriage at the family sitting staring up at the officials. The mother was hugging her children close to her, and trying to look confident and unafraid. The father was showing a little fear, but also some bewilderment. “These documents do not appear to be genuine. Where did you get them?” “From the normal offices, meine Herr. From where else does one get papers?” “I am not satisfied that these are correctly issued, and suspect that you may be Jews trying to escape. You will gather your possessions together and come with me. We will check up on your credentials at the border, and if all is in order, you will be allowed to proceed by the next train.” Anna fought a silent battle with herself. Her instincts told her to help this family, but her common sense told her that there was nothing she could do for them, and any interference would endanger herself to no purpose. Therefore, she studiously looked away, knowing that everybody else in the carriage was doing the same, as the family gathered their things together and walked away up the aisle, with soldiers in front and behind to make sure they went where they were told. As the door closed behind them she found herself shaking, knowing that it could so easily have been her that was being marched up the train like that. |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by Jennie on Dec 1st, 2003, 11:59am Pat, you've really caught the atmosphere in that last post; what hateful times when you ignore the plight of a whole family who may be going to their deaths. It really makes me realise how hateful the Nazis were. |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by Rachael P on Dec 1st, 2003, 12:07pm Poor Anna - I could feel myself in her position People must have felt so guilty and terrified the whole time - imagine the conflict between wanting to do the right thing and self-preservation |
||
Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by PatW on Dec 1st, 2003, 12:15pm I think that that is one reason that regimes like the Nazis are so successful. People are too afraid to do the right thing. Of course, I couldn't let Anna interfere,as we already know that she gets to Joey OK!! A few minutes later the three men returned, and continued down the train, checking papers. Anna was relieved that no more travellers were marched away, and before they reached the border, the men had finished their task and disappeared. There was a small, hastily built platform at the border, and the train pulled in and stopped. Anna sat looking out of the window, and was horrified to see the family being bundled off the train onto the platform. The man had blood running down his face from a cut on his forehead, and he looked as though he had been badly dealt with. The woman was crying and trying to comfort her children, who were also crying. The soldiers were pushing them down the platform to the exit, where Anna could see the roof of a waiting truck. Then the train started moving again, and she could see no more. Something wet dripped onto her hand, and she realised that she too was crying, quietly and hopelessly, for the fate of the family. |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by PatW on Dec 1st, 2003, 2:14pm The train picked up speed again rattling over points as if it was as pleased as the passengers on board to be out of the Third Reich. Before very long, they were pulling into the great Gare de l’Est in Paris. Anna collected her few belongings, and climbed out of the train. She found that she had to show her papers again and pass through a Customs check before she could enter the main part of the station. The atmosphere was very different in France. Here there was no atmosphere of menace such as she had felt in Austria and Germany. The people went about their business with smiles and cheerful friendly words for each other. She quickly found that she would need to take a train to St Malo in Brittany, from whence she could get a ferry to Guernsey, where Mrs Russell was hoping to establish the Chalet School, and where her beloved Fraulein Joey was living. |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by PatW on Dec 2nd, 2003, 12:29pm Jo Maynard, only recently married, sat in her pretty sitting room, chatting over coffee to the Robin. Only distantly aware of the sound of a car pulling up outside, she jumped when the door bell sounded. Standing on the doorstep, she found her sister Madge, with a very familiar figure standing behind her. “Hello Joey, may we come in?” Madge was smiling in delight as she walked into the house, followed by a suddenly nervous Anna. Jo let out a small shriek, which brought Robin post-haste into the Hall. “Let them in for goodness sake Jo” she laughed. “It’s not good manners to leave people on the doorstep, however surprised you are.” Jo chortled and led the way into her sitting room. Speaking German, which she knew would put Anna at her ease, she invited everyone to sit down. “Now Anna, how in the world did you get here? I thought you were stuck in Austria.” “I do not wish to speak of it, Frau Maynard. It was a dreadful journey, and all I want to do is forget. Now that you are married to the Herr Doktor Maynard, I wondered if you would be able to give me some work. I must keep myself now.” “I have been wondering how on earth I shall manage to do everything myself,” replied Jo. “Of course you may work here, Anna. I know how well you work, and I shall need all the help I can get before long. We have a room that you can have for your own, where you can be perfectly independent.” “I’m so glad,” Said Madge. “I offered to employ Anna myself, but she really only wanted to work for you Joey. She arrived on my doorstep late last night, totally exhausted, and I insisted that she should stay with me for the night.” Anna settled in with Jo very quickly, and became a vital part of her household, helping to look after Jo’s long family. She never told anyone the story of her escape from Austria. |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by keren on Dec 3rd, 2003, 10:24am Absolutely, just when first reading it I was worried, till I indeed remembered that this all happened well before the outbreak of the war |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by Lesley on Dec 5th, 2003, 3:26pm Pat this story was wonderfully evocative of the atmosphere that must have pervaded all of Germany and Austria - as well as all the occupied lands during WW2. The terrible fear that would keep everyone from doing 'the right thing' combined with the knowledge that if they attempted to interfere they would be the next victim. Sincerely hope FOCS publish this!! on 12/03/03 at 12:37:19, Rachael P wrote:

||
Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by Rachael P on Dec 5th, 2003, 10:48pm LOL, Pat! You're having a laugh - not sure I could cope with a whole book!! (definitely sure in fact!) Have you seen the take-outs from the "fake" Two CS girls in India? I read them on Liss' blog - v funny! |
||
Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by KB on Dec 5th, 2003, 10:55pm Oh, come now, India's already being done (and very well, I might add) by someone else, in all seriousness, and she is hoping it will be accepted by GGB. |
||
Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by Rachael P on Dec 5th, 2003, 11:09pm Who? How come you've read it? Good for them! The "fake" one seemed definitely "fake" in terms of stuff that would never happen in the CS world - just funny as per these drabbles! Glad to see someone's tackled the real thing ... |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by Vikki on Dec 6th, 2003, 12:36am Will you answer one question KB? Is she a CBBer or someone else? |
||
Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by KB on Dec 6th, 2003, 12:44am Yes, I will answer one question. Gee, it was much easier than I thought. I expected you to ask whether she was on the CBB or not. ;) |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by Lesley on Dec 7th, 2003, 1:01am Bank Pree! Me!!! - Have you seen the state of my bank account? ;D BTW have just been looking through the posts - as of 5 minutes ago the top 15 are KB - 8685 Vikki - 7404 xanthe - 2530 Lisa_T - 2235 Carolyn P - 1963 Rachael P - 1587 Lesley - 1560 Marianne - 1549 Aletea - 1456 Rachel - 1415 Ray - 1405 PatW - 1377 Susan - 1371 catherine - 1357 Esmeralda - 1337 Hopefully haven't missed anyone off! ||
Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by Chloe on Dec 7th, 2003, 8:39am All you need to do now is designate the jobs between them all, so far all i nkow is KB's head girl, Vikki's second pree and that its been suggested Xan's games pree and Lesley's Bank pree! :) |
||
Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by KB on Dec 7th, 2003, 10:34am The person with the third most postings is Games Prefect, but it's impossible to set the others in concrete as people change all the time. We did have a list for a while, but it wasn't viable. |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by Ray on Dec 7th, 2003, 11:10am I think I'd put in a plea for hobbies - seeing as I need a few new and more CS-like ones (other than, say, drooling over extremely nice martial artists, and writing character torture...). Ray *:)* |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by KB on Dec 7th, 2003, 11:18am And the problem with those is...? |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by Ray on Dec 7th, 2003, 11:23am You don't think EBD_herself might come after me for thinking about...boys?? Ray *nervous* |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by KB on Dec 7th, 2003, 11:30am EBD_herself, Elinor or The_REAL_Elinor? Take your pick! *g* I found myself a nice neurosurgeon to drool over yesterday. Okay, so he was already married, but I can dream, can't I? |
||
Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by Ray on Dec 7th, 2003, 11:41am You certainly can ;) - at least said good looking martial artist is actually single (!!) though Californian, which probably precludes me from meeting him any time in the near future. (Unless I manage to wangle a visit-to-set - at which point meeting him becomes likely, AS does the likelihood of me turning into a blob of incoherently hyperventilating jelly...) Ray *wondering at KB's first statement and drawing a conclusion* |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by KB on Dec 7th, 2003, 11:45am *wide-eyed innocence and hoping others will just go along with it for once* I can't imagine what you mean, Ray! ;) |

Title: Re: Anna escapes Post by Susan on Dec 7th, 2003, 2:51pm Pat what a wonderful story. You captured the atmosphere of the time so well. Even though I knew she got away I was still waoting for the guard to say something to Anna. How horrible it must have been to want to help people and being too afraid for your own safety to do anything. We don't realise how lucky we are today to be able to live in compartive freedom. Well done Pat. Already waiting impatiently for February. |
